john looks askance, eyes dashing quickly between the two men before him “no” he shelakes his head “it can’t be”
dean casts a shameful glance to the floor, cas stepping closer to support his weight
john is close to tears “i should have seen it coming. i should have known”
dean sniffs and shakes his head “you couldn’t have known”
“no,” his resolve strengthens and he looks into his sons eyes. his gay son eyes. “i knew something was off but i didn’t want to believe it. show me your gun.”
deans face draws in confusion but he pulls out his handgun, safety on and holds it out to his father who takes it in his trembling hand.
“mother of pearl inlay? i mean, how many guns did i buy you over the years and you stick with this one?” a single mantear rolls down his cheek. “you’ve been gay all this time”

Bombay HC refers matter pertaining to parole of a rape convict to larger bench in light of distinct decisions
Bombay High Court: A Division Bench comprising of R.K. Deshpande and Arun D. Upadhye, JJ., addressed a petition filed challenging the order of a Divisional Commissioner, Amravati on refusal to grant parole on the basis of Rule 4(b)(13) read with Rule (2)(B)(i) of Maharashtra Prisons (Bombay Furlough an Parole) Rules, 1959. The Court placed this matter before Chief Justice to be referred to a larger bench.
The present petition pertained to the facts that the petitioner was a convict for the offence under Section 376 IPC for the offence of rape. The sentence imposed upon him was of 10 years imprisonment under Section 376(2)(a) and 1-year imprisonment under Section 342 IPC. Petitioner was refused a parole. Though he was recommended for the same by the authorities due to the bar under Rule 4(b)(13) read with Rule (2)(B)(i) of Maharashtra Prisons (Bombay Furlough an Parole) Rules, 1959, he was refused parole.
The Learned APP on behalf of the respondents relied on Sharad Devaram Shelake v. State of Maharashtra, 2016 SCC OnLine Bom 2448, wherein the above-stated rule was upheld. The division bench in the above-stated case had relied upon the decision of Supreme Court in State of Haryana v. Jai Singh,(2003) 9 SCC 114, wherein it was held, “Classification created for imposing bar to grant parole or furlough, based on the nature of offences, is a valid classification for the purpose of deciding whether the persons who have committed such offences should be granted remission or not.”
On due consideration of the facts and circumstances of the case along with the contentions placed, the Court was of the view that the matter should be referred to larger bench instead of making out a distinction between the decision of State of Haryana v. Jai Singh,(2003) 9 SCC 114 and Sharad Devaram Shelake v. State of Maharashtra, 2016 SCC OnLine Bom 2448.
Therefore, the Court referred the case to a larger bench for the consideration of the issue: “Whether Rule 4(13) Maharashtra prisons (Bombay Furlough and Parole) Rules, 1959 creating an absolute bar to claim release on furlough leave and consequently Rule 19(2)(B)(i) of the Rules of 1959 to claim release on parole leave to the convict for the offence of rape is violative of Articles 14 and 21 of the Constitution of India, particularly when the offenders in other serious offences are entitled to such leave?” [Vijay Pralhad Varankar v. Division Commr., Amravati; Crl. W.P No. 234 of 2018; dated 23-08-2018]

Flowershop Killing Grounds
We were sent into the great mall that day, sixteen of us in all. Armed and armored from head to toe, we were directed to a grand flower shop, where a myriad of large opulent plants were sold. The objective, kill or capture Shelak the Toxicologist, guilty of countless plant based murders. We came down the escalators, which died as the last of us got down there, exactly as he planned too. The delirium set in as we had entered “his element” and found ourselves somewhat at his mercy. All of us were on edge, surrounded by such beautiful flowers, and an assassin who would use them to end our lives. I told my assistant, Talia, to gather data upon the surroundings and gather any information we might be able to use to turn the tides. She starts cutting samples from all the nearby plants for on-site testing. Just then, Shelak takes notice, chiding the group for their futility, and for killing his precious flowers for their own ends. Moments later a flash of red shadows strikes down two of the soldiers as it passes, and this is followed quickly by gunfire. One jumps up to the shelf top, where a red chain grabs him as his gun fires wildly, he was also killed. Shelak was always hiding, taunting, and speaking ill and tainted wisdom. This pattern continued until the realization that the pollen was the source of the delirium. My assistant then fashioned an antidote together to counter the effects. I then gave chase in the shop to the center, where a massive flower grew. Shelak sat atop of it, welcoming us two, and from here the real fight began. He used the plants to his advantage, vines to trip and grip our movements, plant dust and oils to irritate our senses, and bright colors to camouflage our foe from view. All the while his fury was growing, his thirst for vengeance driving him to kill more and more. In the end, Shelak fell to our guns and blades, and the entire shop’s plant stock suddenly died. We left victorious but embittered at how dearly the price was that we paid here.
