ficletvember 2023 - day 3
After leaving Stygga behind, Geralt takes a quiet moment to appreciate Ciri's black mare.
vague about spoilers but does take place toward the end of lady of the lake
The mare was one of the finest animals Geralt had ever put his hands on. Black and sleek. Racing bred, he guessed, by the depth of her barrel, the fine bones of her face.
He had almost asked the girl where she had come from. But could not stomach the thought of the likely answer.
A cold drizzle rattled against the roof of the stable. Their three mounts had to share space with a pair of dull-eyed oxen, but there was ample hay and clean water, this land untouched by the northern war.
He felt down each leg, sturdy yet slender, and could find no fault in them, besides the odd nicks and scrapes of wounds he would have to treat with salve.
The mare pinned her ears when he tried to lift a hoof.
"Let me," said the girl, who had not gone off to bed with Yennefer. He'd expected she wouldn't want to linger after a long day in the saddle, not with the promise of a hot meal offered by the innkeeper's wife and a straw mattress of her own.
Not with how weary she looked, as though any sleep she had had in recent memory had been the fitful, paranoid half-doze of one with no one to watch their back.
Geralt had slept like that most of his life. He would sleep like that tonight, though not for his sake.
The girl snuck close to the black mare, quiet as a shadow, and when she bent, the mare lifted a hoof at the slightest cluck of a tongue.
She would need reshod soon, Geralt noted.
Without being told, the girl picked each hoof free of dirt and loose stones and pressed her thumbs into the soles to check for the flinch of bruising. She cracked open the tin of offered salve and treated each tiny scab, feeling with her fingertips for the slightest mark.
In another lifetime, he recalled stooping to teach her in the watery, winter light of Kaer Morhen's shedrows. Her nose had been red with the cold, sniffling as she ran her hands down the shaggy, blonde fetlocks of Vesemir's nag. The dust motes had spun over her frizzed scalp.
She had bemoaned the boring nature of the lesson and complained that the old beast would keel over any day now, whether or not she oiled up its bumps and bruises with salve, and he had hid the twist of a smile against the horse's withers and breathed in the warmth of its scent and knew that he would remember all his life how it had felt to press their chilled fingers up under the shaggy mane together, shoulder to shoulder.
The black mare curled her neck to rub her lips against the girl's back and was not swatted away despite her small nips and tugs at her shirt.
Geralt ran his hand along her high withers and the length of her spine. She would be unpleasant to ride without a saddle and may sway through the back as she aged. Though a witcher's mare rarely lived long enough to sway.
"Wouldn't want to ride this one bareback," he said. The muscles of her back twitched under his touch, as though his fingers were nipping flies to be dislodged.
"Her gaits are smooth," said the girl. "It's not bad at all."
Her voice was flat and strange. It had been so since leaving Stygga behind, travelling the dusty road through Ebbing.
Or perhaps he only found it strange.
Each time, before she spoke, he imagined the cadence of a child and was startled again and again to hear a woman speak.
Not quite a woman's voice, he corrected himself.
But a voice stripped of all naivety, each word calculated in how much it revealed.
"Can she jump any?" he asked, and the girl's laugh was bitter and sudden, loud in the hush of the stable.
He had clung to the memory of her laughter, bright and uninhibited, interrupted by occasional snorting and breathless wheezes. Though she stood beside him now, their elbows brushing, he realized he may never hear that sound again.
The wind groaned along the roof as the light dimmed with approaching dusk. It was not yet so dark that Geralt could not admire the black mare's keen eye and strong jaw as he crossed to her head. He scratched below her sleek forelock and she rubbed her face into the touch.
No markings, not even a fleck of white. There was a whorl of hair at the center of her forehead, and he thumbed at it.
"They say a whorl here means a sound mind," said Geralt.
"They can say whatever they like," said the girl bitterly. "Kelpie's the soundest there is. I've had enough of what they say."
Enough for several lifetimes, Geralt agreed.
He looked into the brown eyes of the black mare, feeling her whiskers tickle his hand.
It was easier to look at the black mare than to meet the girl's eye. To look at her at all.
If he looked, he would see the ruin of her scarred cheek. He would see the hollowed shadow of her eyes. He would see a stranger.
He feared to look too closely and lose the memory of a little girl's round cheeks, her petulant frown, her wide and trusting gaze. To see cold blame in that flinty expression. To see how fully he had failed her.
"She's a damn fine animal," said Geralt and wanted to say something more. He wanted to cup the black mare's face in his hands and lay his forehead against her brow and weep silently. He wanted to whisper with a broken hush of sound againat her thin mane.
You carried her to safety when I could not. I may never carry her again.
"She's finest in the world," said the girl. "Maybe in any world."
Geralt watched the black mare's muzzle puff white fog against his fingers and wished he had the tart swell of an apple or a nub of carrot to offer. Some small show of thanks for an animal who deserved every possible reward.
If he had looked then, he would have seen the wobble of the girl's chin and the streak of a tear. If he had known that the girl would recall that quiet night in the stable standing beside him for years and years after, dredging up the sight of his gentle hands and the sound of his gruff voice and the rain on the roof, he would have looked at her for a long, long while and would have reached to hold her in his arms.
He could not look.
In the dark, Geralt passed a steady hand down the sharp bones of the black mare's nose.

Elfwine Chronicles (new LoTR stories, Adventures of Theodred, Son of Eomer, ch 8 posted, 5-20-23)
Theodred's adventures as he travels with Freahelm, trying to find a direction for his life. (Adventure, Drama, Angst, Romance, Family, Humor) (19 chapter story)
Chapter 8 - (begins late Sept, 44 IV)
“I believe they are in the gazebo, my lord,” the servant informed him. Had Theodred not been such a familiar sight around the palace of Dale, likely she would have made more effort to guide him, but it was clear she assumed he knew the way.
Turning instantly to his left after a nod of thanks, Theodred hurried off. She was correct – he well knew his way there, having spent so much of his time in that place on his previous visit.
Humming slightly, his grin broadened in anticipation of seeing them both again after so long a separation. As he stepped outside the palace, he broke off his humming, preferring to hear the birdsong that was so prevalent here. There was a path that wound its way to the gazebo, but he knew that if he circled around behind a tall hedge it would get him there slightly faster, and have the element of surprise for his friends.
However, the sight that met his eyes when at last he broke cover was one he had never imagined. Arawine and Kata were wrapped in one another’s arms, kissing in a most passionate manner. From the look of it, this was not their first kiss. For several moments, he could not breathe, and then the anger slowly began to consume him. Just at that instant, Arawine drew back slightly from the kiss, looking tenderly down at Kata as he snugged her closer. A slight movement caught his eye, and he looked up – right into Theodred’s eyes, full of hurt and betrayal. Arawine involuntarily stiffened with shock, and Kata eyed him in puzzlement, then turned to discover what held his interest behind her. Upon seeing Theodred, she gave a choking gasp, covering her mouth with her hands.
And then he was gone. It was all Theodred could do not to break into a run, but he forced himself to remain at a walk, albeit a stiff-legged, charging walk. He crashed through the stable door, causing several stable hands to jump and Freahelm looked up from where he was just putting water in the stall for his horse. There was no mistaking the black look of fury on Theodred’s face as he stormed down the length of the shedrow, and snatched open the stall door to his mount.
Pulling the annoyed animal away from the hayrack, he fastened him to the wall and retrieved the saddle, quickly beginning to tack up. “Theodred, what is wrong? What has happened?” Freahelm asked with some alarm.
“We are leaving,” Theodred hissed, offering no further explanation.
“Why? What has happened?” Freahelm pressed.
“Are you coming with me or not? I am leaving, with or without you.” Theodred stubbornly refused to reveal more.
Nodding slowly, Freahelm assured him quietly, “I am coming with you. As always, my friend.”
He set to work saddling his own horse, his mind racing with questions. But he knew Theodred too well to think there would be answers immediately. Somewhere down the road he would eventually find out the reason for their abrupt departure.
Just as they were leading their horses from the barn, Arawine hurried into view. In all the years he had known the two, Freahelm had never seen them at odds with one another. Indeed, it had always been almost eerie how well the two got along. All that was clearly in the past. There was no denying the sparks between them.
“Theodred, we must talk!” Arawine said, moving in close and catching his uncle’s arm.
Theodred violently whirled, snatching his arm up and away. As a result, he shoved Arawine backward and, since he was already off balance, the force of the motion knocked him to the ground. “There is nothing I wish to say to you, nephew! I can think of men I might have expected to betray me, but you were never on the list!”
He turned and stepped up into the saddle as Arawine scrambled to his feet. “It is not what you think!” he pleaded.
Theodred glowered down at him. “Not what I think? You believe I cannot tell the difference between a friendly peck on the cheek and a man kissing a woman as a lover would? You think I do not understand the implication of my dearest friend passionately kissing a woman he knows has promised herself to me, and what it means that she was gladly receiving said kiss? I am not the fool you take me for, Arawine!” With that he dug his heels into his horse’s side, and the animal spurted forward.
Arawine met Freahelm’s eyes pleadingly. With a slight, disbelieving shake of his head, Freahelm urged his horse after his friend. This did not look good, and he couldn’t help thinking it was a mistake to leave before they had talked more, and rationally discussed this matter, but that clearly was not going to happen. For now, all he could do was be there when Theodred was ready to vent his feelings. Still, he could not see how this breach in the relationship could ever be mended.

98% of my job right now is just like taking off and putting on various horse blankets. They have so many. And the weather is constantly changing so we are constantly changing them. And like they can't come in the barn or go outside without different blankets.
Handling so many horse blankets is giving me ideas for dog jacket making ... Particularly durable fasteners. And I do really like the idea of neck covers, especially on rain jackets for dogs ... Hmmmm. I also definitely want to try to find some small versions of the little metal latch things a lot of horse blankets use and make doggie blankets. Everyone always says the Shedrow dog coats are like mini horse blankets, but don't they mostly use velcro? They'd be more authentic if they used the straps and metal fastener things lol.
Oh and I totally have ideas of stuff I could make for horses but uhh no horses of my own to make them for! One day if I ever do have the money to get my perfect sporty draft mix mare, she will have the coolest and cutest gear. (Also sidenote: There's a school horse at the barn that I now realize is probably my ideal horse. She's a draft mix but built leggier and lighter than some ... I'm saving up to get back to lessons in a few months hopefully and I'm hoping to get to ride her. She's also BFFs with my fave horse Mercedes - who is retired now - so that's cute too lol).

to anyone who cares about horses... Horse Plus Humane Society on youtube is a GRIFT. Essentially they're killing horses that might not necessarily need to be killed because it costs more to feed and treat a sick horse than it does to kill and cremate it. Most of these horses aren't even in the slaughter pipeline, they're dealing directly with traders and picking up their rejects that were never even possible to ship anyway due to lameness, injury, weight, etc. So they're purchasing sick horses that traders need to get rid of, hiding the people responsible for the horse's condition, and then just killing it once they get it home.
Obviously horse rescues will have a higher euthanasia rate than an average horse barn, but almost half of the horses they bring in each month vanish with no updates. There cannot be THAT many cases requiring euthanasia.

A video of their "training": https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=233739872245893
They use "behavioral problems" as a reason to euthanize and I gotta say, it is very rare that a horse will need euthanized for behavioral problems if you've got a good trainer and knowledgeable staff. There are some instances where it may be necessary (I think Buck made the right call on this one), but usually, no. If you're euthanizing a bunch of horses for behavioral issues, that's a YOU problem, not the horse's problem.

Building Vanaheim, Part 11
Wow, this is getting long. Never expected it to have so many parts, but it’s a big project.
I finished the second shedrow section pretty quickly since it was designed to be a mirror of the other one, so all the design choices had already been made. After that, the only things left to do were the outdoor arenas and paddocks!
Like the shedrows, I made two lots for the outdoor arenas that would mirror each other. This is what they look like straight out of CAW, so there’s a lot of work to be done! The two smaller arenas are designed to be for dressage, while the bigger one on the left is for show jumping. The green area in the top left will also have a couple of small cross country jumps on it to introduce horses to them while being backed. I haven’t decided yet if I’m going to do the same in one of the arenas as well, having a couple of cross country/hunter style jumps for training the beginner pons before they go out into the big boy jumps that’ll be scattered around Vanaheim.
Here are the arenas properly fenced in and the terrain painted. I’ve also added in foliage to make it look more interesting.
My game’s probably going to hate me for the amount of greenery and flowers going on here, but I can’t help it ^^’

Incase Anyone Cares...
So it’s track season here in Erie and I’m back to getting up at 4:30 AM and busting ass for these horses and the days are long and exhausting AND I still work full time at the music store! So I’ve been dragging ass lately. NOVEL TIME!!
Yesterday whilst feeding dinner and blanketing the ponies we got hit with a tornado warning. And let me tell you guys there are few things I’m deathly afraid of in this world. I work with 25+ 1,200lb, 17hh straight muscles who are afraid of their own shadow. I’ve been kicked, trampled, thrown, head butted, dragged, bucked off, you name it. And I love my fucking job — I wouldn’t trade it for the world. It made me a tough ass bitch. BUT. Dark water, squids, and tornados: those are on the no-fly list. And this.... this was a mother fucking tornado.
Luckily, there was ONE other trainer there with me — a man named Robert who incredulously looks an awful lot like Billy Joel and reigns straight outta bumfuck Kentucky. And I’ll tell you what, if he wasn’t there, smoking a cigarette in the shedrow entrance watching this shitstorm roll by like “HOOOWEEE BOY LOOGAT THEM THERE HAILS THE SIZE-A GOT DAMN QUARTERS!!” (Merle, is that you??) I would’ve been face down in the tack room crying like a baby. No lie.
Shit. Was. Terrifying.
It was LOUD as fuck. Hail was the size of golf balls, winds were 75mph gusts, thunder and lightning non-fucking-stop. Horses were freaking out, tap-dancing and tearing in their stalls while I’m trying to blanket them for the night, poor Timmy is snorting and huffing tryin so hard to stay calm for me while I’m doing the same shit for HIM (“LISTEN BALTIMORE ONLY ONE OF US CAN AFFORD TO FREAK OUT RIGHT NOW AND THAT’S ME”) but when the eye hit it was literally every man for himself and I could’ve thrown up and just died right there. Literally thought it was the end.
So anyway the point I’m trying to make is this: if I was alone, I would’ve cried like an infant. But Robert was there with me and, despite me shaking like a leaf literally the entire time I cowered in the corner of the tack room, he was fine and made sure I was fine. “When it gets real quiet, then ya need to start to worryin’. Ya hear me say ‘the calm ‘fore the storm?’ Well tha’s what they mean! Them clouds get to lookin’ like marshmallows, the sky gets all yelled ‘n orange, birds ‘n shit — they all get dead silent. The leaves on trees is all flipped upside down. Then ya hear it — s’like a train. We seen some shit in ol’ Louisville!” Dude had me swooning. I was ON it. He could’ve bent me over the strawbales and filled me out like a job application. Mounted me like his outrider and hit a two-minute lick in the last run. Stars in my eyes y’all. LMAOOO and my delirious ass is like “oh this would make a good story!”
TL;DR: I’m gonna write ANOTHER SMUTTY DARYL X READER FIC SINCE MY LAST ONE WAS SO POPULAR!!
Thats 2 now!! Any requests? I wont promise anything but I work with him tonight and I got a bottle of whiskey waiting so ya girl might catch a little inspiration if ya know what I mean
Love you all xoxoxo

So those of you who have been following what’s happening with HiCaliber Horse Rescue probably are familiar with the blog Shedrow Confessions, where an anonymous writer and her moles did most of the work exposing them. Well, HiCaliber defender Margaret Ransom decided to sue Jennifer Mareck, who she accused of being the writer. The case aired on Judge Judy. Judge Judy wound up ruling in Ransom’s favor on the grounds that Mareck would not give up the name of the Shedrow blogger even though she admitted knowing who they were, so therefore she must be lying about the author not being herself. Which was a b.s. ruling in my opinion. Just because someone does not give up the name of another person does not mean that other person does not exist. Michelle Knutilla and others associated with HiCaliber are pretty clearly sick and deranged. I 100% agree with Mareck saying that for the author of Shedrow’s safety their anonymity should be protected. The case should have been dismissed the moment that Ransom couldn't prove Mareck was the blogger.

One solid older lesson QH that can handle kids and a shedrow barn w/a tack room (3/4 stalls?) and a drain on one side of the foundation for washing should be enough to start a tiny part-time program I could work up from
Starting a small horse business in the current economy is an insane prospect I feel like if I could just have one rock-solid lesson horse that could handle kids I could maybe make it work part-time and slowly start building up, but even that feels insane with the price of land
#I only have the want to teach beginners#but once they start to specialize I can send them to other facilities in the area#it would be nice
