If you type in “halter horse” in Google Search this is one of the many atrocities you will find. Look at this horse’s conformation. It is awful with those post-like legs. How can someone feel this is a great example of a workable horse? There are some that are much worse than this one even. Some are built so down hill that when they move they are basically smashing their front against the ground. I am not sure if this horse has HYPP, but, to my understanding, many halter-bred horses do. Breeding a horse to have a disease because it may cause excessive muscle mass or breeding a horse to be double-muscled is just cruel. These horses live in pain and can’t move properly. I do feel that the industry, however, is slowly improving as more people gain awareness.

Bring back my Quarter Horses

Over the years, horses have slowly become less a work animal and more a show animal. Humanity has slowly bred out all the GOOD qualities, i.e., decent hardy feet, stamina, strong joints, and muscling that is actually beneficial. In a world of technology and growing knowledge of veterinary medicine, we have come into a mindset of “oh I can fix that with injections, corrective shoeing, and supplements” instead of, “if I breed a horse with weak hocks to a horse with brittle feet, he won’t survive the day to day tasks.” The American Quarter Horse, is one breed that has suffered the most from these breeding & showing tactics. Let’s start with Halter horses:

The original halter horse was muscularly balanced and structurally correct. They had a smooth round hip, wide shoulder, strong legs, and solid proportional feet. What happened?! Now they look like body builders on steroids. Except, these particular body builders completely forgot LEG DAY. Halter classes have completely bred out the performance aspect of the Quarter Horse world and started breeding draft horses with small feet and t-posts for legs. Quarter Horses are supposed to be an athletic & versatile breed. I do believe what saddens me the most is that the JUDGES continue to allow these kinds of horses to win world every year, where as a classical-looking Quarter Horses would be lucky to place above last in a halter class.
