“I was born into a gender role that I did not accept & I didn’t feel like myself. Desperate to find the financial means to transition to my true gender, I committed a crime in 1999 & was sentenced to 10 years in a men's prison. While incarcerated,” she writes, “I found a community that shared my trans experience - it was there where I found my voice.” 

“I began writing “I Am Her” as a statement to a world that said I shouldn't exist. I wrote it as an anthem for all those that felt shunned for simply being who they were. In 2009 I was released from prison. Shortly after my release, I moved to New York City where I found a studio to record “I Am Her” and the means to create a video for my song.“

Shea Diamond

Shea Diamond (she/her) is an American singer-songwriter whose music fuses elements of soul, hip-hop, R&B, and folk. Raised in Flint, Michigan, Diamond recalls facing harsh resistance to her gender expression: “I got whoopings for walking like a girl, for using the restroom sitting down like a girl." A musician from an early age, Diamond was originally inspired to become a singer by Tina Turner. "Even singing when I was little," she says, "I remember being corrected: ‘Put some bass in your voice.’ It was like robbing me of the only joy I had in this world.”[1] Facing this refusal, Diamond ran away from home as a teen and, at age twenty, robbed a convenience store to pay for gender-affirming surgery, for which she had to serve nearly a decade in men's correctional facilities. She describes having cultivated her musical and activist voices through this experience and wrote one of her most recognizable and best-loved songs, "I Am Her," over the course of it.[2] After her release, she moved to New York City to follow her musical and activist pursuits. After songwriter Justin Tranter saw a video of Diamond performing this song a capella at a trans lives matter rally, she was signed to Asylum Records, through which she produced and released her debut album, Seen It All, in 2018.[3] Diamond's career has taken off since then, seeing her participating in a number of high-profile musical collaborations and headlining pride festivals across the States. Her most recent release, "I Am America," provides the soundtrack for HBO's series, We're Here, and was featured on Billboard's list of top LGBTQ songs of 2020.[4]
