Personality: Bright, energetic, friendly, mischievious, brash, reckless, flighty, curious

Childhood: Sickly as a baby, but made up for that with boundless energy and zest for life once she was healthy. Spent her childhood wandering with her parents and brother, was well-suited to nomadic life, but holds a special fondness for Thavnair and Othard. Sometimes teased for her scaled elezen ears, but overall mostly happy. Is very sensitive to (and hates) the cold, despises Ishgard for that and for committing the unspeakable crime of being grey and boring.

Adulthood: Becomes a full-time adventurer for a considerable chunk of her life, marries the son of Curious Gorge and Dorgono, and assists her uncle in the restoration of tribe Kimbatuul. A dedicated student of several different schools of lancework – mixes Ishgardian, Hannish, and Nagxian traditions in a way that makes her truly unpredictable to fight. Never quite reaches the heights of fame of her parents, but is fairly well-known.

Interests: Xaela culture/history, fighting, botany, alchemy, cute critters (her definition of “cute” is… interesting), voidsent/the void

 Marz: Adores and idolizes her mother, sometimes feels like she’s a bit larger than life. They are rather startlingly alike in a lot of ways, and Marz has made sure to pass on her own mother’s knowledge of herb lore and alchemy in particular.

 Estinien: A daddy’s girl through and through, very closely bonded to him since she was very small. Often went with him to dragoon training with the Radiant Host.

 Hamignant: Drags him along on all her adventures, big and small. Inseparable as kids, still close as adults but live very different, separate lives. Goes to visit when he’s in Thavnair – avoids doing so when he’s in Ishgard.

 Kaede: Mildly intimidated by her calm, poised, elegant auntie Kaede, feels like a bit of a nuisance at times, is always very very proud whenever she earns any praise from her. (Kaede sees her as a miniature Marz and treats her accordingly lmao)

 Aymeric: Lives to follow him around and bother him with questions, adores that he is always patient and makes time for her. Always trying to convince him to retire and move somewhere less cold.

 Emilien: Friendly rival and sparring partner, fun to needle and annoy. Has been trying to sabotage his love life with other men for years because of Hami’s feelings for him.

 Liliane: Thinks of her as a little sister, likes to indulge her whims and plans, encourages her but does patronize her a little.

 Others: Especially fond of her auntie Zaya, who teaches her tons of fascinating things about voidsent, and her uncle Daava, who is essentially a second father to her. Likes to drop in on Tataru and gossip from time to time. Adores Alisaie, sees a total kindred spirit in her as a fellow hot-headed girl twin. Sees Nidhana as a mentor in all things alchemical and weird.

thinking about mizu from blue eye samurai. thinking. thinking so much. thinking about how mizu operates outside of gender. like we joke about her gender being revenge but straight up? it literally is. like she grew up as a boy and is most comfortable being a man, but behind that is the feeling of betraying himself because he isn't being honest about who he is and he lives in fear of being discovered. and when he lived as a woman, she found joy there as well. she fell in love, and though she wasn't good at it, she liked being a wife and enjoying a simple life. but in that life too, she isn't being honest about who she is. and when she reveals her true self, it's not a woman, she's a demon, a weapon. she's to masculine to be a woman, and too feminine to be a man. ultimately, mizu is most comfortable when they are being a murder machine. that's when they feel they are being the most true to themself. like a sword, they are neither man nor woman, but a blend of both, which makes them stronger.

my Stephanie Brown hot take is that she should get mad bitches now that she's single in comics. Yes yes shipping BUT the one time she had sex she was punished by the narrative via teen pregnancy. I think she should be allowed to have as much sex as she wants with zero consequences. Could be a lot of sex, could be a little. Point is she should get to do it without getting narratively baby trapped this time. she should get them pregnant, actually.

In the L.M. Montgomery canon, there is a single book not set in some way on Prince Edward Island, and this is The Blue Castle, which is set entirely in Ontario (of all places).

For utterly unrelated reasons, The Blue Castle is also my favorite of her works, primarily because Valancy Sterling has led an utterly unremarkable life of being squished into a corner and then receives terrible news and decides "wow, fuck this" and goes INSANE (per her family, who do not deserve her and gave her a stupid nickname).

And I just think there's something lovely about a woman (deemed ugly and unwanted and undesirable and old) going out and claiming the life she's always wanted but been too scared to try and have.

And she has an absolutely marvellous time doing it, let me tell you.
