sweet aftertaste
summary: it’s late at night and student!ten and his friends are left with nowhere to go; ending up at the bar where lounge singer!reader is performing.
inspired by halsey’s song and video “finally // beautiful stranger”

“so what are we supposed to do now”
yangyang sighed and sat down on the sidewalk
being downtown at half past two am with nothing to do was definitely not in the boys’ plans.
but it was now, considering they had been kicked out of the house party for breaking an (apparently) very ancient porcelain vase
“it was totally sicheng’s fault though”
but no one really cared about who was at fault, there was no time for that.
what bothered them more was that no one wanted to go back to the dorms yet
but it wasn’t like they could just go and crash another party
they just know the people at their college
and well
the big party was that one, the one they surely didn’t dare to put a foot on again
ten kept looking around the deserted street no one was really familiar with while the others bickered in the back
he found it nice, even if it felt a little bit lonesome considering the hour and all the small houses showing no sign of corporality
there were no many shops in the block, and if they were, they were closed and dim
until ten caught sight of a small pub
a classic, old-fashioned with a wood design and a few hanging lights that were the only source of brightness in the view
he signaled his discovery to his friends and they all looked at each other for confirmation before excitedly nodding
they didn’t encounter themselves with a rousing ambience when they entered the bar. just a typical bored bartender and some grown men devouring peanuts and beer at the counter
ten’s eyes focused on a small stage, a guitar placed on the wood floor. some holes making it look like it was gonna collapse anytime soon
some of the others got themselves some beers and when they were in the middle of asking ten if he wanted something,
someone’s unknown steps made that floor crack. the slow screeches made ten’s gaze feel trapped in curiosity
it was you
a student who struggled to pay rent and had to resort to singing late at a local bar to generate any sort of income
it wasn’t always this late, though
but that day you also had to cover your coworker’s shift at your other job
and yeah, you could have just told the pub’s owner that you would just play the following night
but it wasn’t just about the money. the truth is that you loved singing. of course it wasn’t a lie that you would prefer to make more out of it,
but sometimes a heartfelt praise from a costumer was all you needed to get the energy to raise that guitar all over again
you were surprised at the sight of more people than you would have thought taking the hour and location of the place into account, but it also made a sigh of relief leave your mouth
after all, performing for an empty audience always left a bittersweet aftertaste in your stomach
you smiled at the expectating boys that looked around your same age
and one of them smiled back. you weren’t one to get nervous when performing, since you were more than very used to it
but somehow the way his face glowed when he smiled made you relax your fingers and grip, that you thought were already relaxed
you introduced yourself and started strumming the guitar
ten, meanwhile
had never seen a purer face
and each melody that left your mouth had him more lost, more captivated
he listened attentively at the lyrics you had mentioned you wrote yourself
you sang about your grandmother and the stories she'd tell you about living in germany. how her own grandfather would tell her that the freckles on her face resembled stars
you had such a way of talking about her that made ten's chest throb. in that moment, he believed that he knew her. how she seemingly always smelled like coconut and how she baked the most delicious cakes ever made. he imagined her living in germany and picking the same flowers every evening, her hair dancing with the wind even though in reality, he didn't even know which color it was.
the ballad ended with a final strum and at that point ten was convinced that the guitar was created solely with the purpose of being touched by your fingers.
of course he and the boys exploded in claps and cheering, the men he had noticed when they first entered joining them too
ten could swear he even saw johnny shedding a couple of tears
and it was understandable. you had something and ten wondered if you had the power to brush the strings of all their hearts at the same time you did so with the guitar.
ten eyed his friends and he pointed at you as he sat up from his chair
them smiling knowingly and telling him they would wait for him outside
"hey um" he started, his hands in his pockets as he went through posible ways of starting a conversation "my name is ten, and i really liked your performance"
he mentally shouted at himself for not being able to hold eye contact with you. he was not a shy person, he was actually very outgoing and had no trouble in meeting new people
it was funny, then. how for some reason you made him nervous and he oddly made you feel at ease
"thank you so much. i actually wrote that song not so long ago, my grandmother helped me"
and that's when it all started.
you talked to him a little bit more about your grandma and he told you he had a similar relationship with his aunt, sharing stories about each lovely woman
you found out he was a dance major and didn't hesitate to tell him that was admiring
he also guessed you were a music major, and commented that you were doing a great job if it was that easy to sense there was more than just natural talent in there. you apparented like you knew a lot about what inspires you
that made you feel content
and you also asked yourself how a stranger had successfully seen through you that much
but something about ten just felt right
and you weren't sure if it was your overflowing emotions, or the late hours of the night or the lack of sleep you had gotten lately
but before ten you had never seen a mouth that you would kill to kiss
after a bit more of chat, you and the beautiful stranger decided to exchange numbers since the bar was closing and ten had to go back to his friends
you had to come home to your roommates as well.
(the next day at work, your co-worker who you had covered was tripping over her words to apologize all over again. she knew that the change resulted in you performing at a later hour, and was scared that that might have been prejudicial for you.
you just hugged her with the biggest grin on your face. and thanked her. she had never seen you smile so wide)
for both of ten and you, it was good news that you kept in touch since then
you learned so much about ten in a short period of time.
he also sang (he had promised he would show you sometime. and once, as you were falling dozing off on the phone with him, he started singing a lullaby when he was convinced you were asleep. you totally weren't. and his voice was velvet through the line)
he loved to draw and he did it marvellously. he had showed you some of his artworks and you always begged for him to explain the meaning behind it. but in the majority of the cases, he himself didn't even know it
you also learned that he used way to many smiley faces when texting, that he drank iced tea as his life depended on it, and he always dreamt of the ocean.
you soon came to know that ten was the sort of person you learn new things about each day, and you never got tired of it
it was scary
you didn't have much experience feeling this things
this love things
you had had some crushes, of course. still, they were all innocent crushes who either faded into thin air or turned into short-lived flings
on top of that, you never were a scaredy-cat type of person
at least that was what you thought before ten,,
because now you had received a certain text from ten that made you drop in the trash the carrot you were peeling
"i want to see u tomorrow :("
"i have my two shifts ://" (you were never really one to use emoticons, but i guess that's one thing you inhabited from ten)
"i can go watch you perform, if you like"
"i would really like it"
so now it was friday and you found yourself almost at midnight, at the bar you knew perfectly, but now you felt as if it was a completely different and new space you had never breathed in before.
you were tapping your foot in the stage so much the floor was actually breaking down even more. you decided to stop, you couldn't afford being nervous over ten's pretty face
you tried to distract yourself fixing some last things on your guitar, when you heard someone getting up on stage with you
"woah, it feels nice seeing everything through here"
"i know right? i never get tired of audiences. i like knowing that for a few minutes everyone is aware and probably thinking about the same thing"
ten looked at you with shiny eyes. you were truly the only source of brightness in the view
you obviously had to include the grandma song when performing (ten sang along and some giggles escaped your lips).
and then proceeded to present a new song you had just finished retouching the night before
ten raised his eyebrow and he looked even more concentrated than before, probably thinking about how you hadn't mentioned any new song you were working on
the song was about him
about the wish of ten letting himself fall in your arms
and although the lyrics could be a little more straightforward, you knew ten would get it anyways
he always did.
you had finished and now the following jazz singer was filling the room with a tranquil euphony
ten asked you to dance, it was a slow song and your hands found their way to his shoulders, his hands steadily on your waist.
"the song was beautiful" and there was something in the way that he said it with a shy but cheeky tone that indicated that you were right, you knew he had realized. and you were more than glad than he did.
"you know, you can join me singing anytime. you said you liked how it felt"
"i wouldn't mind taking up that offer"
in that moment you knew
you knew that it was finally safe for you to fall.
you had sung about wanting ten to feel secure enough to let himself drown in your embrace, but what you didn't know
is that he had already fell
he had made himself at home in your arms and was waiting for you to open the door too. and now you had
so it went on
after day that, ten went to every single one of your performances
and you also went to see him whenever he had a dancing show
you praised him so much every time he looked like he had red dye all over his face
he had sung with you at the bar multiple times already,
all his friends coming to see the growth of the young romance
"you should be thanking me for breaking that stupid vase!!!!!" yeah - you really liked sicheng.
you never experienced that bittersweet aftertaste of an empty audience ever again
because now ten was always the audience,
and you were his
and that's all you needed.
he's right here now,
and you think he'll stay.
(also, ten soon became your grandma's favorite person to bake cakes for.)

The Truth Changes
Chapter 3: Fragile
I have an idea of how this’ll all end but I’m stuck at the moment so if anyone has any thoughts or suggestion I’m open for requests! Thanks for reading!
Porcelain landed in the street stopping traffic. Looking to the right she saw the group of traitors standing on the side walk. Porcelain walked toward them and stopped in front of former best friend, Alya. She held up her wooden control and Alya followed the red thread with her eyes only to realize it was attached to her own finger. She lifted her hand slowly noticing the string tied to her not knowing how it got there. At first she tried to untie it but she couldn't even touch it.
"What is this?" She questioned.
"Alya Cesaire, you will be the first. You are my example of my power." Porcelain told her.
Alya balled her hand in a fist. "What are you talking about?"
Without warning more threads sprung out of the handle and attached to Alya's arms, legs and head. She began to panic looking at them sticking to her and she tried to wipe them off. At this point Nino was the only one left standing next to her trying to defend her from the thread but they went straight through him to get to her. He couldn't touch them either.
"Now, change."
The red strings began to glow and Alya's arms turned shiny and hard. She got stiff and her face glossed over. Before Nino could make sense of anything Alya was already turned into a fragile China doll. She bent her elbow which was connect by a ball that helped all her joints move. She felt her face and how hard and cold it was. Nino grabbed her hand hesitantly and looked at her, she tried to talk to him but words didn't come out.
"She can't talk unless spoken too." Porcelain smirked.
Alya looked at Nino and mouthed 'Run'. At first he refused but she pushed him away so he started to run toward the others. He didn't get far before the red threads of fate rapped themselves around him as well and transformed him into a puppet too. Next was Ivan, then Mylene and Max.
A crowd formed near the comosition including Nadia Chamackh with the news. Porcelain took control of her puppets movements prohibiting them to even lift a finger and they walked next to her forming a wall behind her in front of the cameras. "Ladies and gentleman, I introduce you to my Marionette dolls. Puppets of my own design, flawless in everyway as long as they don't lie." Porcelain announced to the news cameras and gestured her arms to her creations.
"Can you tell me why you're doing this? You know you were akumatized by Hawkmoth, correct?" Nadia asked holding a mic out.
Porcelain ignored the question and stood next to Alya. "Alya, who is your best friend?" She snapped her fingers and Alya's face relaxed as she got control of her muscles again.
She took a deep breath and said, "Marinette Dupain-Cheng."
"Wrong answer. That's a lie."
"I'm not-"
Porcelain snapped her fingers again and Alya went back into position like a soldier. Her face then cracked a little on the cheek. "That my friends is what happens when you lie. You see, Alya stopped being Miss Dupain-Cheng's friend when she abandoned the poor girl for a fake." She stepped forward and continued asking questions she knew Alya wouldn't know or would try and stretch the truth too. Soon cracks on her fragile body chipped until she was on the edge of completely braking and falling apart. "Next question, Alya, If you had to choose between Ladybug and Marinette, who would you rather see?"
She was silent for a second. Naturally she'd say Marinette so she'd be a good friend. "Ladybug..." Porcelain looked at her in surprise, because it was the truth. "I'd honestly choose ladybug... Not because I like her more then Marinette though, its because I know Marinette would tell me to do it too."
"No she wouldn't." She hissed.
"Yes she would, because that's the kind of person she is. That's why she's my best friend. She'd never make me choose!" Alya figured it out. "This isn't you!"
Porcelain got tired of being told who she was, that's how she ended up in this situation. "You don't know me at all, do you. I don't care." She squeezed the wooden handle in her hand and Alya shattered revealing a wooden under skin. Alya's wooden body slumped over with rough edges and cracks and  chips covering her body.
"Alya!"
Porcelain was caught off guard from the shout, it came from Nino, he was able to break free from the trance for only a moment. It was impressive, but he used all his energy and will power to say that one thing. "No use, she no longer has a mind of her own. She's nothing but an empty wooden toy, a shell of a girl, not even worthy of being called my marionette. I'll keep her as an example though." She turned to the camera and spoke to Paris. "Now, Chat Noir, give me your miraculous, unless you want all of Paris to end up like this poor Cesaire girl."
Hawkmoth spoke in her ear to remind her, "Don't forget Ladybugs as well!".
Porcelain chuckled and told him, "Don't worry about that for now."
Porcelain looked around in the crowd of people that started to run as fast as they could and spotted Lila taking cover behind innocent people as she escaped. She'd have no problem finding Lila later so she focused on gathering more people for her army, transforming all those in her path.
By the time she had a few hand fulls of people including everyone in her class, except Adrien, Chat Noir had shown up. Porcelain looked down at her army from a rooftop where Chat Noir met up with her.
"I saw your broadcast and wondered how they made your skin so clear on screen, whenever I'm on screen they edit my blemishes, but looking up close I guess you're just puurrrfect?" Chat joked as if they were friends. "Tell my Marinette, what happened?" He asked in a more serious tone.
"My names poupée de porcelain." She told him without taking her gaze off her army.
"So you're made of fine China?"
"You're annoying."
"Just stalling until my Lady shows up." He winked.
Knowing Ladybug wont show up Porcelain decided to amuse him. "My mask is Porcelain, because it's harder to shape then fine china and made strong under hotter and higher temperature. I'm to be strong. And like me, my Marionette's body's are made of bone china, not fine china. Bone china is made of a mixture with bones. The bone they are made of is their own. So believe me when I tell you, when they crack of break, it's ten times worse then breaking a bone. Their lies will not only hurt the people they lie too, but themselves more."
Chat became increasingly concerned hearing that the puppets were breaking their bones when they lied. "That's a terrible th-"
"As long as they don't lie to me or anyone, they'll continue to be perfect and unharmed. Attack me if you'd like, but they'll protect me, and are you willing to fight them knowing you could break their fragile armor? Can you imagine the pain Alya felt? The betrayal and the brokenness? She's not in pain anymore, because she's now nothing but a mindless puppet, but still..."
"The pain she felt? Or the pain your feeling? Because the way I see it, your hurt and you're Hawkmoth's puppet." He argued. She glared at him making him nervous but he continued. "Marinette, this isn't you." He tried to reason with her.
"You're going to tell me I'm a good kind person, someone who wouldn't hurt anyone. Someone like, Ladybug, right?" He looked at her flawless face and for a moment he saw a glint of her blue sapphire eyes behind the mask.
"Yes. Because you are."
"No, she used to be, that girl, but now I'm someone else. In order to set my plan into motion, this is how it has to be." A red string strayed from the path of the others and made it's way around Chat Noir. Hawkmoth was in her ear telling her to get him now and his miraculous, but she ignored him and the string never attached to him. Chat Noir just watched It cautiously.
"Lila." Chat said, making Porcelain retract her thread. "Your after Lila Rossi, right? Then why go after your friends!?"
Porcelain scoffed and faced her whole body toward him. "Some friends they were, they hung on her every word." She then mocked their voices, "'Marinette you're the best!' or 'Marinette, your an everyday Ladybug!', what a bunch of crap. Because one word from that Girl turned all those pretty words into, 'Marinette how could you do that?' and 'Marinette why would you lie?'."
"As soon as I saw you akumatized on TV I went to find Lila, but when I did you were still taking control of innocent civilians, so why not go straight to the source?"
"Of course you would think like that. You can't even begin to comprehend my great plan and how this'll all turn out in the end. I'm not going after her, yet. I want her to know what I can do, I want her to be scared. I want her to know what's coming for her." She threw her arms out to her Marionettes in celebration of her success.
"That's it, I can't wait any longer." Chat Noir got in a ready to fight stance.
"Are you sure about that? You're precious bug isn't here yet." She said in a sour sweet voice.
"She'll be here soon enough, but I can't sit back and let you continue this."
Porcelain let out a cackle of a laugh. "What if I were to tell you that Ladybug is one of the many among my army!?"
Chat didn't waver knowing there was no way she could know that. "Now look who's lying."
Porcelain made her way closer to him making him more on guard and she kept a cheeky smirk on her face. "I don't lie Chat Noir. Watch what happens when I do." She cleared her throat. "I'm in love with Chat Noir." Chat took an emotional blow from that but brushed it off. She gently grabbed her mask and pulled it off only enough for him to see. He observed a crack under her eye. "I'll let you in on a secret." She got closer to him and whispered in his ear. "Ladybug isn't coming."
Chat Noir took a step back. "You're lying!"
She tapped on her mask revealing no new cracks. "I don't think so."
Out of anger Chat Noir lunged at her and pulled out his weapon. The Marionettes were far away enough that she couldn't use them as shields so he had a chance and an opening. Before he could really strike her she jumped over him and he didn't attack again. "Marinette! Stop this."
She looked down at her puppets again. "Hmmm... Looks like everyone who has been entrusted a miraculous have been akumatized by yours truly." She giggled and closed her eyes thinking of how she should continue her chat with Chat. "Well if you want to continue fighting, I don't really mind, I have to take your miraculous anyw-" She looked towards him and noticed he was gone. Out of sight.
"You let him escape!?" Hawkmoth yelled. "And you know who Ladybug is, and where the other miraculous are!? Porcelain, retrieve them for me this instance!"
Porcelain made a face as if an annoying bug was buzzing by her ear. "No."
"Remember, I gave you you're power and I can-"
"-Take it away. I know. But I can give you all the miraculous together, in a box, like a present. Trust me, I have a plan. Everything will be alright."
"You better get them to me as fast as you can, or else." He demanded.
"Yes Hawkmoth."
Meanwhile Chat Noir made his way across town and hid in an alley way to transform back. Plagg flew out of his ring in a panic.
"Plagg calm down, we need think of a plan, maybe she was bluffing and Ladybug is fine."
Plagg shook his head, "Kid this is serious, I can honestly tell you, she was telling the truth. We need to find Master. I have a feeling Tikki's with him, which is good."
"Tikki?" Adrien asked.
"No time to explain, lets go!" Plagg flew in the direction of Master Fu's massage place with Adrien close behind him.
To be Continued... Hope you like it....

Operation Miroh| Stray Kids Mafia! AU ~ Chapter 4
You stirred in your sleep. You felt a lingering pain in your shoulder from where you’ve been shot. You wince as you attempt to move your shoulder. You cracked open your eyes a bit...only to be eye to eye with another pair of eyes. You let out a loud shriek and Hyunjin stood up straight. The temple of his glasses were hanging from his lips. His lips were formed into a frown, his eyes were hooded and his eyebrows furrowed. You sighed as you rolled over on your back after seeing his face. His eyebrow quirked up as your pupils looked away. You can hear his voice in your head going, “Well?” You can hear, heck you can feel his disappointment. You were supposed to rest, yet you charged in head first into another mission AND getting injured to top it off.
Oh.
Woojin.
You felt Hyunjin’s disappointment, you can only imagine Woojin’s disappointment.
“Woojin!” You shot up. Pain flared up throughout your body as you collapse back down wincing as you reach for your injured shoulder.
You looked at him expectantly for an answer. Hyunjin still looked at you in disappointment.
“I know. I know. I’m sorry,” you sat up slowly as Hyunjin turned around and pulled out a syringe, his miracle anti pain and rapid healing concoction. Hyunjin can’t be bothered to actually lecture every single Stray Kids member whenever they get injured, so he waits until they awake due to the pain before relieving them of it in place of a lecture.
“Please, Jinnie. I’m so close,” you breathed out as Hyunjin glanced at you briefly before pulling back your bandages a bit to inject in his magic liquid into the bullet wound. Your shoulder tingled slightly as you watched the wound close slowly but surely. You reach up to caress your fingers down his jaw. “Please.”
He sighed as his gloved hand grasped your own. His black gloved fingers caress your smaller ones as he pressed a small kiss to your fingertips. He turns away and stood before his screens.
You slid off your cot and walked past him. You entered the long hallways as rush back to Chan’s office. You hesitated in front of a closed door. You turned to face it. Your heart was beating in your chest as your fingers trail over the grey painted wood. Woojin’s room.
~Voting Opportunity~ Do you want to talk to Woojin?
Reluctantly, you turned away and trotted down the hallway towards Chan’s room.
“CHAN!” you burst into his room, his door swung forward rapidly harshly coming into contact with the wall. From a few doors down, you could hear a soft chorus of groaning from Seungmin and Jisung.
Chan visibly flinched from your loud voice and harsh impact as he swung around in his chair to face you.
“Pleas-” you started.
“You don’t have to explain. Woojin already gave the briefing,” Chan interrupted, smiling softly in pity.
“W-wait. No. Channie...” you started, feeling your heart sink down in your chest as you fought back tears.
Chan looked up to you briefly, opening his mouth seeing your tears.
“I need to go back,” you breathed out. “I was so close.”
“I don’t think-”
“No. We’re close I know it. The people. They aren’t being kidnapped. The bakery-”
“You didn’t find anything,” Chan reminded.
“Exactly. They aren’t being taken, they left willingly,” you explained.
“You’re grasping,” Chan turned away slouching back over his laptop.
“Chris,” Chan flinched upon hearing his English name. “The baker was last seen in her bakery. She’s gone without a trace, but no sign of a struggle.”
“...”
“No signs of a runaway,” you finished, hoping Chan would connect the dots.
“Tonight, please. Let me go back,”
“In the morning, when the weather is nice,” Chan gave in.
“Thank you,” you rushed forward wrapping your arms around his shoulders, pulling his back into your chest. You nestled your cheek into his blond curls. “Thank you. I won’t let you down.”
Chan gripped your hand softly.
~
You walked out, closing the door to Chan’s room quietly behind you. You jumped once you saw Jisung who magically appeared in the hallway before you. He was leaning against the wall with his arms crossed and a smug look on his face.
“You should’ve picked me,” Jisung stated.
You scoffed, looking down to the floor in defeat. Jisung strolled over to you and pulled you into his embrace. You leaned your head into his shoulder. He swayed you side to side softly and he ran his fingers through your scalp.
“Tell me what you’ve found,” Jisung whispered. “Tell me, baby.”
You shoved him back causing him to collide with the wall. He chuckled softly at your reaction.
“Come on, we’ll check out District 9. Maybe, just maybe someone will show up,” Jisung offered.
The sun was barely setting. The night sky slowly took over the brilliant oranges and red. District 9 was a shady place. It’s cold, dark and lonely, but hey, it’s home. Without the knowledge of District 9 and its location and existence, this little patch of territory looked to be abandoned littered with several destroyed and worn down buildings at first glance.
Jisung was donning his signature white porcelain squirrel mask. In a squirrel like fashion, he climbed up the broken and worn walls. Like a squirrel, he walked on his hands and feet. One hand after another, one foot after another. As ridiculous as it looks, it works as a taunt and Jisung is exceptionally great at taunting and pushing buttons.
District 9 held several hidden secrets, not even you know every single one. You doubted even any of the Stray Kids members knew of them all. Perhaps Chan, but his mind was a mystery of its own. Was a building a safe house, a secret base, a storage or just plain up an abandoned and destroyed building?? There used to be so much light in this area, so much chatter and voices. But now, there are so many voices that would no longer make a sound. Not even the sounds of buildings settling can penetrate through the dense silence.
Something about the air felt heavy, so little activity, but it feels like so much activity. The paranormal doesn’t exist, just lingering memories of the life before, before everything fell apart. We were going backwards in time. The world used to be industrious, making huge human innovations, leaving their marks in history. Now the world has collapsed back to the days where electricity were but a dream. Electricity became a luxury where not even the rich can afford, the people lived under candle light and heated water.
Money was worth so much yet so little. In the mafia and gang underground, money was power. However, in the over world with the people, money was a rarity.
You casually strolled down the wide open streets, the sounds of your boots seemed to echo loudly against brick street. There was hardly a breeze, but memories of the previous life seemed to echo in your ears, you can almost hear the breeze and the soft night time chatter. In the corner of your eye, you see Jisung jumping from roof to roof, rubble to rubble in an animalistic fashion, he was always on all fours. A squirrel of all animals, you never thought of the small furry animal to be terrifying or animalistic. After all, Woojin was known in the underground as the bear, a bear.
A squirrel. You scoffed.
You watched Jisung take a bigger bite than he could chew. He attempted a leap that looked wayyy too far to a building diagonally from him. He landed on the weak rubble of a wall on his hands with the wall breaking under his feet. His feet scrambled on the weak surface trying to find purchase as his metal claws dug into the brick wall as he slowed to a stop. You watched him pull himself up until he was crouched upon the ledge with his back towards you.
Jisung had requested (rather threatened) Hyunjin to fashion him some metal claws to finish off his squirrel aesthetic. To which Hyunjin agreed just to dump the workload onto Seungmin, bless his soul, for he almost broke Hyunjin’s nose for dumping it on him and then proceeded to almost breaking Jisung’s nose because of the stupid request (but Chan interfered). (No) thanks to Hyunjin, Seungmin had specifically designed and engineered metal claws that acted like an extension of Jisung’s fingers. The metal rings surround each individual finger snuggly but without cutting off blood circulation or limiting mobility as it ends into a slight curvature. Because of this accessory, Jisung was able to climb surfaces as well as an actual squirrel can.
You almost mocked him for the over glorified metal manicure to get a matching pedicure because climbing is more than just fingertips, you need feet purchases as well to Hyunjin and Seungmin’s dismay. If looks could kill, you would be dead long ago. Heaven forbid, Hyunjin and Seungmin to work with Jisung’s feet to fashion the little shit metal claws for his toes.
You ducked into said abandoned building and knocked twice on the wall. You paused momentarily and knocked once. Two knocks echoed back in response. There were people within the hidden safe house, but no one new. There was an unspoken rule that the people that Stray Kids safe guarded follow. Once Stray Kids knocks, you always answer. If there was any newcomers, they were to emerge with the acting leader of that particular safehouse. Other than that, the people should never emerge because even though District 9 was Stray Kids territory, the abandoned buildings hid many dangers. The dangers include traps by Stray Kids, traps by the enemy, or the enemies themselves. You looked up at the wall, you see the shadow of Jisung’s crouched figure illuminated by the moonlight.
You smirked.
“I know what happened.”
“Explain please,” Jisung’s voice broke through the silence.
“Tomorrow.”
Jisung groaned.

The Royal Advisor was busy discussing with her King about a request from the Hearts Quarter when a soldier barged in. “Forgive me, my King, Lady Andromeda.” He panted as he kneeled on one knee and bowed, the two superiors in front of him nodded towards him to continue his sudden entrance. “Your mother’s store was attacked just now, holding your Aunt Bella and subordinates hostage. The soldiers are still trying to free the hostages, the Jack of Hearts sent me to inform you immediately.”
Underneath Andromeda’s schooled features held the panic she’s learned to hide, but her quivering voice gave her away to her superior. “King Lancelot.” Her silvery voice crumbled into a soft, urgent whisper.
“Go, Andromeda.” Lancelot didn’t need anymore excuses from her to send her out, and the moment he stood from his desk, his Royal Advisor immediately dashed towards the stables. She mounted herself up on the horse that was already waiting for her and quickly ushered him to gallop as quickly as he can.
Chants of vicious taunts made her deaf as she made her way through Red Territory, jumping over fences and taking sharp turns to get to Central Quarter quickly. Her knuckles had turned white as she gripped tightly on the reins, breathing ragged from sheer panic, and eyes glossy from tears threatening to spill. If anything horrible happened to Auntie Bella, to anyone working under my mother’s business, She gulped at her own thoughts. I will be forever damned, completely failing my father, and lose the only family I have left.
The horse skidded to a halt and she threw herself off the saddle, taking in the sight of the ransacked shop from outside. An explosion erupted from inside and black smoke started coming out of the windows, then a bright light that faded into nothing as quickly as it appeared. “Auntie Bella!” She screamed as she ran towards the door but her soldiers blocked her path.
“Lady Andromeda, the Jack—“ The young soldier was interrupted when the door swung open and Edgar was holding the frail woman in his arms, followed by several more soldiers behind him, taking the hostages safely away. She pushed past through the soldiers and as Edgar placed Bella onto her feet, she threw her arms around her aunt tightly. She gripped on her dress as if her life depended on it and she kept pulling her closer.
“Andromeda, dearie.” Bella whispered and she gulped thickly, pushing back the pain coiling around her throat. “I’m so glad you’re okay.”
“Auntie, they were after you—“ She pulled away and her aunt’s hands were quickly placed on her cheeks. The dirt from the explosion had tainted her aunt’s dress and Andromeda wiped off the ones smeared on her jaw. “I’m sorry I didn’t get here sooner—“
“It isn’t your fault.” She gently smiled at her. “But you have to be careful, they were after the vault.” Once the words registered in her head, her breathing grew heavier and her eyes wider as she turned back to the store. The vault had her mother’s items, the only place where it told the story of her life, as her father described.
What do they want from mother?
“Edgar, call in Blanc, immediately. We need to find out what they took from her.” Her voice was low and her eyes darkened with rage, yet her features were as calm as ever—monstrous and deadly as her soldiers described once, after an attempted ambush to take down the Queen of Hearts. She stepped towards the ruined shop, the glass shards cracking underneath each step. The smoke had dispersed when she went in, the crystals from the emergency response unit sucked in the hazardous mist and bowed deeply when they see her.
“Lady Andromeda, Blanc is on his way.” Edgar said as he followed behind her. She inspected the markings on the vault, the steel door had dents and holes and the lock had been destroyed. She glanced at the bent crowbar nearby and pushed the door open, the storage room then greeted her with a puff of dust. She swatted the air in front of her as she stepped in, the room grew colder and it was enough to make the Jack behind her more cautious. “I hope you don’t mind me asking, why is there a vault in your mother’s shop?”
“This store was her office, her second home.” She explained as she stepped over the scattered papers and cloth. She bent down to reach the wooden box that fell on the floor, turning the crank a few times. The music box opened and a distorted tune of a lullaby played. Edgar knew it was bad omen, but he didn’t speak and let her continue. “Father requested that her items to be stored in here. It was a sentiment or tradition that he practiced in the Mercia family. ‘All things must be stored away in the dead person’s happy place, to help their souls remember their happy memories upon their departure, and the only exception are the items to be inherited by their kin,’ they said.” The horrible tune stopped, the wires inside had snapped from their fragile state. She placed the box on the table and inspected the open journals that were covered in dirt and dust. She wiped them away and scanned the designs her mother had made throughout the years, including the uniform she was wearing.
“Lady Andromeda, I came as soon as I heard.” Blanc bowed towards her and she nodded once.
“Thank you, Blanc.” She closed the journal with a soft thud. “You know all of my mother’s items, we must know what was taken.” Her flat tone pushed the Rabbit to quickly assess the room.
“What’s Blanc relationship to your mother?” The Jack asked as they tried to clean the mess inside the vault. It took a moment for the Royal Advisor to answer, she has to take away the information about her past in the Land of Reason and she needs to choose her words carefully.
“Blanc had close family ties to the Mercia and Windsor family. From what Father told me, Mother entrusted Blanc with the complete list of her items, stated in her will, to keep track of what must be kept away in this vault in due respect to the Mercia tradition.” She hoped that Edgar would no longer ask any more questions, as she was afraid she might have to start lying to her general.
“None of your mother’s items were taken, Lady Andromeda.” The White Rabbit walked towards them with a confused look. “I’m not quite sure why the suspects would attack this place.”
“May I ask,” Andromeda whispered as the realization crept on her neck. She glanced back at her mother’s old desk and thought that the items inside the vault were found around Cradle. “What.. items were in here?”
“Items from Cradle, Lady Andromeda.” He spoke slowly and the woman’s fist clenched immediately, confirming her theory. “The items from the country you were born in are within the Mercia residence, as they were to be inherited by you.”
“They’re after those.” She quickly turned to leave the room. Her heart pounded in her ears as she asked herself, how did the culprits know? The skirts of her uniform fluttered as her feet guided her back outside, the tulle cloth that draped over her shoulders floated on the air around her as she mounted her steed again. “Edgar, we need to go to the Mercia residence, quickly. Do not bring any other soldier but Blanc, I will rely on your strength.” The Jack somewhat understood what caused the urgency and her orders, so he obliged. He and Blanc mounted the same horse and the Rabbit’s face almost drained from color when he heard her vow, “And I will show no mercy for harming my family and destroying my mother’s keepsake.”
The horses took off as they returned to the Red Territory, no words were exchanged between the three as they made their way. Andromeda was busy asking herself the many questions that had been ruining her the moment she realized the goal of the culprits. No one knew of her birth at the Land of Reason, let alone the visit there. She knew that the items were the only link to travel the unfamiliar world, and to have them in Cradle were almost useless and odd for them. There were only a handful of people who knew about it and she couldn’t think of who could be the traitor—but nevertheless, the Jack with her will eliminate them. Her chest weighed heavily as she thought of the execution that would soon take place. She didn’t want him to be involved in her mess, but the duties bestowed upon him were tightly wrapped around his wrists, controlling him like a puppet.
They slowed to a stop when they reached the tall gates of her old, not-so-humble abode. The gates were bent and open, a sign that the culprits had arrived. The three of them proceeded cautiously as they glanced over the bodies of the unconscious guards that littered the once beautiful front yard. She took a deep breath as her heels clicked over the steps of the front porch and pushed the main doors wider. The living room was wrecked, paintings and pictures were scattered on the floor alongside the broken porcelain vases and dirt. The sunset’s rays no longer held the beautiful light it once had, another bad omen that Edgar noticed. The sound of something dropping from above them made them all turn their heads towards the blood-stained staircase. A maid rushed down the steps with a horrified expression and immediately held onto Andromeda’s open arms. “Lady Andromeda, they took—they took your mother’s chest—and they—they let me go to tell you that they’re waiting for you—in—in the Cage.” She stuttered and breathed heavily on her master’s shoulders, slowly calming down when she felt her hand rubbing on her back. Edgar’s grip on his sword tightened as his blood ran cold at the thought of what ‘the Cage’ could mean.
“Who are they?” She whispered.
“Please forgive me, I wasn’t able to see who they were because they had cloaks that hid their faces.” The maid pulled away and bowed deeply.
“It’s alright, please get to safety along with the other maids and guards. Blanc, please help her.” She gently requested and Blanc nodded. They scampered through the different rooms and aided with the injured and wounded out of the residence. She turned to the Jack behind her and there was panic evident on her shaking frame. “Whoever they are, they know the layout of the house very well and went straight for my mother’s items. They also seem to know that I’d be here as soon as I can.”
“I will protect you, Lady Andromeda.” Edgar vowed, his gentle smile was long gone the moment they arrived at the gates. “I promise.” He stood in front of her and carefully took her shaking hand, then placed a soft kiss against her pale knuckles.
“I believe in you, Edgar.” She looked up at his jade eyes and the soft smile he gave her eased her senses. He lets go of her cold hands and placed it back against the metal handle of his sword.
The two of them made their way up the stairs as Andromeda guided her to where the Cage was. Cold beads of sweat trickled on the side of her face as she remembered the faint memories of torture along the hallways and at the horrors that lay beyond the doors at the end. She was certain that she could cut the circulation on her hands if she clenched them any tighter.
Meanwhile, Edgar had no idea what her life was like. All he knew was she was his equal, trained to kill any disturbance in the Red Territory or traitors and subduers. If walls could talk, they’d tell the most horrible tales that even Edgar would never have thought of.
They entered the tiny room that was illuminated by a dim orange crystal, showcasing the silhouettes of the man sitting on the chair at the center and the other standing just beside him. The room was undisturbed, Andromeda realized. The terrible cage was the only room that she’d so far was ironically the most peaceful one yet. “What a beautiful woman you’ve become, Andromeda.” The man sitting down chuckled and her face immediately drained from color. “I hope you haven’t forgotten me, I was your military instructor.”
“Why would I forget the man who taught me how to kill?” She answered monotonously, hiding away the fears that shook her to her very core as she was reminded of how cruel he was.
“Ah, sentimental as ever. I knew this room would be a fitting place to capture you.” The outline of his evil grin made Edgar’s blood boil with rage and in contrast, his hands had grown as cold as ice. “If you resist, Andromeda, you’ll be in a world of pain again.” The man cocked his head to the side as he stood. The hood fell from his head and finally revealed his face, making both generals shudder at the sight of the scar on his eye. “But first, I see I must eliminate the Jack of Hearts first before getting to you.”
“Edgar, stay down.” Andromeda’s voice was colder than he’d ever heard and pulled him away unexpectedly to stand in front of him. She didn’t want him in her mess, and she was going to make sure of it. He may be cursed with the duties bestowed upon him by the cruel fate, but it didn’t mean she wasn’t going to change it.
Edgar noticed she stepped over a thick, open line across the cold, gray, concrete floor and returned his gaze on the back of her head when she heard her giggle softly. The tune was supposed to be lighthearted, but hers weighed heavily with ferocity and cruel delight. She took a step closer to the man and the apprentice behind him reached for the chained handle just above him, then pulled it twice. The light flickered, then metal bars erupted from the open crack behind her. The sound of metal gliding rang through his ears painfully and he was about to reach out to her, but he was too late. “Andromeda!”
“I said stand down.” She said firmly as she reached to her hair. The lights flickered again and her hair was up in a ponytail, revealing the emblem underneath her nape. Her instructor chuckled again, grinning maliciously over the lady. Edgar attempted to break the metal bars that separated him from the woman he vowed to protect with his sword, but to no avail. He was starting to shake in frustration and anger, but all he could do was watch.
“You really are as stupid as ever. You’re a woman, Andromeda. You can never protect a general. ” The words used to be painful for her. “He was your only chance of getting out of here alive, and you pushed him out to protect him. My, you should be watching yourself more, you don’t have to pretend to be selfless. This room is where we’d punish you, correct? For every idiotic thing you do. Do you wish to reminisce those lovely memories? Would you rather I finish you off before I kill him?”
“I would rather finish you before you even take another step.” The smirk on her face was terrifying enough to surprise her instructor and catching him off guard. She quickly threw a powerful kick straight at his chest, making the man fly across the room and startling his companion who rushed to his side immediately. She had hit his sternum too hard that it made breathing too difficult for him. “I hope you know how much I wanted to do this for a long, long time.” Her heels’ icy clicking was just as cold as her smile as she made her way to the cabinets. She pulled at a drawer and an intimidating longsword glimmered against the dim light. “How about a trip down memory lane, master?” She teased.
She strutted towards the chair and sat with her perfect posture as she aimed the tip of the sword dangerously close to her old instructor. He pushed the apprentice away from him, “Go back! Call for reinforcements—“ In one swift swing of her arm, she threw the longsword at the young man and pinned him by his arm to the wall. A loud cry erupted from him and Edgar’s eyes widened in shock.
“Why don’t you be a good boy and watch the show? You’re gonna learn a thing or two from here.” She smiled sadistically at him, the young man was frozen in place as he watched the woman—the monster—in front of him tell the tales that made the room earn its name. Edgar was certain the woman beyond the steel bars was not the same woman who he’d often tease at the Headquarters. He knew she was strong and capable of murder, but this—this was a completely different persona and he admits to himself that he was terrified.
“Now, where do we start?” She chuckled again and turned her head towards the older man. “Ah, how about that time that I fell during practice from balancing on my tiptoes for too long? I remember very clearly how you dragged my poor, small, eight-year-old body like a rag doll and threw me to this very wall.” She sounded like she was talking about a happy memory in her life, but her words stated the dreadful tortures she had to endure just because she was a girl. She pointed at the visible brown stain against the rough wall, “The blood is still there, isn’t it lovely? You bashed my head there like I was an animal, I even remember counting up to twelve before you stopped because Father arrived.” She stood and despite her small frame, she was fuelled with the rage that was bottled inside her for more than a decade. She pulled on to his hair to make him meet her gaze, watching the haze of monstrosity cloud her light brown eyes. “Why don’t we do that again, hmm? It’s your turn to feel that.” She started bashing the weakened man’s head harshly against the same spot on the wall. “C’mon, master. Count.” She laughed as she kept ramming his head, completely ignoring the splatters of blood that stained her cheeks and dress. The man was screaming beneath her and before she could hit him against the wall again, Edgar called out to her.
“Andromeda, that’s enough!” He was hurting—God he was hurting—to see the woman lose to her rage. He would do anything for her at that moment, to save her, to take her away from this horrible room, to forget the horrors of her childhood.
“Aww, looks like someone saved you just in time.” She let the man fall and groan in pain on the ground. “Edgar, I’d really appreciate it if you let me kill him. You’re bound to do it anyway, weren’t you? Let me save you from the misery.” She turned to him and a gentle smile painted on her face. It was a lovely smile, but terrifying with all the blood on her.
“No, Andromeda, I’ll save you—“
“I’m far from saving, Edgar.” She walked towards him and looked up at his eyes. “Let me save you from my hell.”
“You’re a monster!” The apprentice charged at her with the longsword that was once on his arm.
“Andromeda!” Edgar pushed himself closer to the rails but she stepped away and towards the young man. She ducked as he swung the sword, then quickly disarming him. Cruelly, she grabbed the sword and turned, slashing the weapon and slitting his throat open. The fountain of blood rained on her dress and splatters had stained Edgar’s gloves. For a split second, he saw her eyes glow red—or was it the light reflecting on the blood?
“You raised me to be a monster, why is he so worked up about it?” She turned back to her instructor and forced him to sit on the chair. “Now, I hope you know why I’m doing this, master.”
“An—Andromeda, please.. forgive me.” He was pleading for his life now, something that satisfied her completely. An amused chuckle escaped her lips as she sauntered in front of him, blocking Edgar’s view of the sinister smile on her face.
“You are aware of the oath you’ve taken when you’d become my instructor, correct?” She cocked her head to the side and looked down at him. “The moment you betray the Mercia family, the Jack of Hearts is bound to take your head.”
“Please! Somebody had only ordered me to betray you, it was not my intention in the beginning! I swear on my life!”
“Really, now? From whom? Tell me and I might free you from this hellhole.” Her voice dropped to a threat as she leaned close. She inhaled the familiar scent of blood, sweat and tears, remembering very clearly that it smelled almost similar to her childhood; but to know it came from one of the men who had abused her, it was almost addicting.
“The Magic Tower! They wanted to steal your mother’s items and lure you to them. They wanted to conduct a study on you—they know you’re from the Land of Reason—”
“I see, that’s enough.” She spoke louder over him in hopes of hiding away the last of what he said, but Edgar still caught wind of it and drew in a deep breath. He was going to ask her a lot of questions tomorrow, but right now, he was focused on getting her out of here. “I admire your cowardice, to immediately beg for your life and quickly change your side.”
“You—You promised you would spare my life!” He shrieked as she picked the sword up again.
“I did no such thing, master.”
“You truly are a monster! I hope I see you in hell!” He yelled at her.
“Kindly prepare a seat for me right next to Lucifer. You did teach me how to become like him, in case you’ve forgotten.” She smirked and a soft laugh was heard from her, making the man freeze in his spot. “And I quote, ‘Once you’ve betrayed the army and the bloodline, off goes your head.’” With a powerful swipe, she brought the bloody longsword down and had cleanly sliced the deadman’s head off from his body.
The moment she stood straight, the air grew colder as she realized the monstrosity she had done, watching the pools of blood stain her uniform more. She was absolutely sickening to look at, and she didn’t want Edgar to see her in such horrifying state. “Call in the maids to deal with—“
“Open the cage.” It was his turn to order her, something he’s never dared to do. He could no longer stand watching the woman crumble into a demon that did not suit her. In his head, she was still pure. She was only driven by the hatred she’s never got to release and brought justice to herself. When he learned about the abuses himself, he felt no qualms about bloodshed—he wanted to do the same thing she’d done just now. She was an angel raised to be a demon.
The Royal Advisor stepped over the corpses, the ends of her uniform was completely drenched with blood and had left bloody shoe prints across the concrete as she made her way to the metal handle. She pulled twice, not realizing that she’d stained the handle. The bars went down and he rushed to her, ignoring that he would be bloody mess as well. He held her tightly from behind, feeling her body tense and rested his lips against the temple of her head. “Don’t hold me, I’m covered with blood.” She whispered weakly, heart breaking into two as the man she loved was tainted with her sins.
“I don’t give a damn.” He whispered and she swallowed a shaky breath. “Let’s get out of here, this place does not suit you.”
When they left the Cage, she called in several maids and guards to clean up the mess that she had done. The subordinates were familiar with the routine, despite only doing it thrice in the entirety of her life. They were taught how to dispose of the evidences as soon as possible by the instructor himself, as oath of serving the Mercia family without a doubt. A maid retrieved the chest that held Andromeda’s items, and handed it to him. “Lady Andromeda requested you to hold this for now as she changes out of her uniform and clean herself. She also ordered me to take your jacket and glove to clean off the stains.” He obliged to her request, taking off the tainted clothing from him and holding the chest carefully.
“Edgar?” Blanc quietly approached him. They were in the living room, it turned out that the subordinates were cleaning up the moment they heard the blood-curdling screams from the Cage; they knew that the execution had taken place and that Lady Andromeda was safe. “How is she?”
“Horrible.” He admitted. “She took them down with her own hands, I was supposed to be the one doing the dirty job—but she was enraged. She was unstoppable.” His gentle smile contradicted the discomfort in his eyes, the incident still too fresh in his mind. “And I learned she was from the Land of Reason.” The White Rabbit’s eyes moved away from his and there was an uncomfortable silence around them.
“Please, protect her with your life.” Blanc spoke a few moments later. “Now that someone else knows, they’re bound to come for her again and again until she’s captured.”
“You no longer need to remind me twice.” The Jack of Hearts snickered. “It is my duty and my life’s purpose to protect her.”
No words were exchanged when Blanc finally left and the subordinates had burned the evidences deep within the forest, leaving him and the ruined woman alone in her residence. She wore different clothes, a pure white dress embellished with gold details that hugged her body beautifully. The draperies on her shoulders fluttered against the cold wind and she looked as ethereal as ever, but the sadness on her eyes clearly showed how colder her soul had become. They mounted their magnificent white steeds and made their way back to the headquarters.
She was prepared for her punishments tomorrow morning, smiling a little as she convinced herself that her body could endure a few more hits. She couldn’t appreciate enough the oddness and be fascinated over the items in her mother’s chest—all she could think of was the scar she’d left on Edgar’s heart after her cruel display. She stood from her sofa and made her way out of her room. She wanted to apologize and promise him that she would never dare spill another drop of blood, thus the commitment to her new uniform. She’s burned away the tainted one as a physical reminder that that will be the last time she would let her emotions overrule her judgement.
She stands in front of his door, just a few minutes before lights out. She took a deep breath and raised her hand to knock at his door, “Oh!” The door swings open, revealing a surprised Edgar clad in his yellow shirt. “S-Sorry to bother you, were you going somewhere?” She averted her eyes, breath hitching in her throat as she lost the confidence she just had earlier.
“No, no. I was going to visit you. Come in.” He smiled at her and opened the door wider for her. “Would you like some tea, Lady Andromeda?”
“No thank you, this will be quick.” She sighed and finally looked up to meet his warm, teal eyes. “I came here to apologize, it was horrible of me to make you stand there and watch the execution.”
“There’s nothing to apologize for.” He took her cold hands in his warm ones, silently praying to God that her soul be freed from the doom they both shared. “We’re cursed. We have no other choice but to serve in a cruel world despite our morals and jurisdictions. You did nothing wrong, love. You acted upon justice—and you’ve achieved it. There is no greater glory than that.”
“You don’t deserve a monster, Edgar.” She gulped. “You deserve someone better—someone who isn’t cursed with the same fate our ancestors had bestowed upon us, someone who doesn’t have blood-stained hands, someone pure.” She wanted to free him from the hell she’s grown in and push him to the skies that he deserved to be in. He pulls her into an embrace, snapping her out of her own anxieties. His warmth was too inviting to ignore, parting the clouds in her mind.
“I am a demon myself, Andromeda, who fell in love with an angel who was raised to be a monster.” He pulled her waist closer to his, taking in the scent of her, clean from sins. Her heart raced at his sudden confession, but he didn’t seem to notice what he said and reassured her that his words were genuinely from the heart—something she never thought a Jack would do. “If I let go of the woman who’d seen and known the worst of me and pulled me out of it to be the best, I would never forgive myself.” He gently cupped her chin between his finger and thumb, slightly grazing the pads over her pink lips. “I know my confession is sudden, but will you let this demon save you from hell?”
His gaze burned towards hers and she was completely entranced at the passion that glimmered brightly on them. Their was a magnetic pull around them, and they didn’t bother stopping themselves from falling into the blaze that set both of their hearts on fire. Tongues lapped and swirled through their kisses as he gently pushed her to the wall and flush his body closer to her, his hands tracing and touching everything he could reach through her dress. If their kisses could take away the pain that she’s endured all her life, she’d be able to forget the horrible memories. He roughly cupped her face in his hand as he pulled away, a whine escaping her lips. “I promise I will protect you, with my life.”
“I promise that bloodshed will no longer be an option.” She finally smiles genuinely, finally able to breathe and free from the constraints of her past.
Another passion-hazed kiss sealed a silent promise—that life is theirs to choose and no curse or duty would decide what their fates will be.

Pet Zombies // Blastfromthepast
I’ve been going through old stuff for this while perusing the new outlines and remembered this one dribble I wrote for things that isn’t canon anymore, but I’m still fond of it. Sort of
----------------------------------------
It came to pass one morning, right at breakfast, that Orion asked an unusual request.
The unit had risen with the sun, all together as per the usual. Evelyn had been more on top of things than she normally was at that hour, being on her feet before the rest and brewing something akin to coffee.
To be painfully honest, it wasn't coffee. Whatever it was, it woke the dead and put hair on the chest of the poor soul who ingested it. It was certainly not good for the health, but Fetil loved the stuff. Because Evelyn was the only one among the six who could actually cook (bad things happened when anyone else tried. Fetil had actually lit water on fire once, much to everyone's surprise and panic), the Russian was stuck making anything at least somewhat edible.
Including, but not limited to, Herr Kommandant's no doubt toxic coffee substitute.
"I'm surprised no one glows in the dark." Evelyn muttered, crinkling her nose at the smell of the tar-colored goop that spilled out into the carafe below the brewer. It had a tang to its scent that stuck to the back of the throat, something reminiscent of black licorice mixed with ear wax. In short, it was very unappetizing to smell. She didn't even want to imagine how it tasted.
While it was brewing, she had gone about cooking up what she could of the supplies they had left. The result was butane-fried toast and eggs. Though not the best flavor on the planet, Evelyn had discovered it was a bigger hit and produced less vomit than the standard food they had managed to procure thus far. After setting the rickety table for the presumed starving beasts she shared her life with, she turned around to fetch anything even remotely consumable in liquid form to go with the meal.
There was no surprise to find Fetil already in the kitchen, appearing as though someone had discarded a half-dressed marionette on the kitchen counter next to where the radioactive wa--coffee was brewing slowly. She was anything but active and nigh unapproachable in the morning before taking in at least one cup of her tar. Others might have been startled by the ciu sidhe's ability to appear in the room so suddenly and quietly at such an early hour. Evelyn, on the other hand, was different. Other than noticing the entrance of her commander, the Russian avoided and ignored her. It wasn't long after that the rest of the unit trudged in and took their places at the table.
At evening meal, if they were in the little structure they called home for it, there was much more order about the table with silently designated seats being taken properly. Breakfast was another matter entirely. No one seemed to care at all where they were planted, so long as there was food involved. Even killing machines were still some form of human at some point of the day. Even the sidhe, human though they weren't, were mortal in some fashion.
Oberon was trying to keep awake. The hulking geomancer kept trying to faceplant his plate, yet managed to catch himself just before impact. Abigail watched him intently as though waiting for him to finally make contact. Morning suspense was always the best way to wake up and Oberon inevitably would land in his plate and cause a roll of waking laughter across the table. Today, some fateful force decided the daily routine just would not do.
Cabren, the aviator and all around driver, took a bite of one of the pieces of toast on his plate and made a half-strangled noise of what was translated as disgust. "Butane again? This stuff can't be good for the brain cells."
Evelyn, who had taken her seat with them by this point, stared back at him with with an apathetic silver glare. "If you don't like it...," she started, giving a pause to catch his attention. Once he looked at her, she continued. "...You can throw it to the wastes for the zombies to eat."
"Maybe we'll cure the plagues." Abigail stated rather flatly. "And save what few brains Cabren has left. All with toast..."
"Maybe we'll eat our breakfast, kill a few brain cells, and go out to find out what is needed of us today." Evelyn was deadpan as she said it. There was an uneasy silence that hung over the table, broken only by the ding! of the coffee brewer and the pouring of the end result into a waiting cup.
"I want a pet zombie."
There was more silence, though all eyes at the table (that were open, at any rate) turned toward Orion. Without his facepaints and with his white hair left unbound, the necromancer could easily pass as normal. The shock of the statement didn't last long, Cabren breaking it with an almost incredulous voice.
"You ... why in the hell do you need a zombie?"
Orion looked utterly hurt that no one understood why he had stated such. "Minerva died about four hundred years ago! From what I understand, ball pythons don't exist anymore."
Cabren continued the exchange, offering his hands in a 'go on' gesture. "And...?"
"Do you have any idea what a necromancer is without a spirit guide?" The question came out almost hysterical. It took almost everyone by surprise. Almost. Oberon made a noise, but it was a melodic hum mixed with unintelligible mumbling that was more out of sleeping at the table again than it was anything conscious.
"You know they're not actually zombies, right?" Evelyn had taken the floor again, causing the discussion to once more turn to her. "Neither of your abilities can help you with these ... things. These mutants."
Orion scoffed at this, obviously much more awake. "So I kill one, bring it back to life, have my own zombie! A real zombie, befitting a real necromancer."
"That is the most ludicrous thing I have ever heard you say." The Russian held the bridge of her nose between her fingers in exasperation. "You are a real necromancer, do not start with me on that. Can't you just ... wait until someone not horribly mutated dies a natural death and do it that way?"
"Nein."
The interruption caused everyone to jump, the voice rather unexpected. For a moment, there was a shocked silence save for Cabren's plaintive cry of, "I dropped my toast!" The outburst even woke the snoozing geomancer with a start, who (as per routine) slammed facefirst into his eggs. It was not often the ciu sidhe graced morning conversations, if at all.
All eyes (and one egg in Oberon's case) turned to their commander, who was half-leaning on the countertop next to the coffee brewer. If one didn't know better, she would have looked perfectly normal. To the rest of her unit, those who knew her best, her eyes were half-glazed and she couldn't stand up straight. Fetil was about awake as Oberon was. Given the geomancer's sudden call to consciousness, chances are he was now more awake than she.
The cup in the sidhe's left hand was brought up, the liquid goo within the cracked porcelain sipped at. There seemed to be a rather sudden change in the way Fetil held herself after that. Her disheveled waves and coils of inky hair visibly puffed and frizzed some, a small amount of clarity returning to her eyes. With a subtle twitch that only those trained to see could catch (her companions were among that number), her posture straightened up some. She soon lowered her eyes to the necromancer across both room and table from her.
"No zombies."
Orion looked stunned for a second before he registered what was said to him. "Why?" he whined. Not having a zombie (or any sort of spirit guide, for that matter) obviously upset him.
"Zombies are unpredictable, tamed or not. What if it bites someone in this room?" Her voice had gained that piercing tone it usually had, although there was still a slight crackling of sleep and disuse on it. "What if it bites me? What then?"
Orion thought a moment. "We can all do the 'Thriller' dance, at least?" His answer was tentative, more a question than a statement.
It caused Evelyn to smack her face into her hand and shake her head as though in disbelief of the exchange. "I take it back. That is the most ludicrous thing I have ever heard you say..." she muttered in the Haitian's direction. He gave her a scoff, stopping what he was doing when his commander spoke again.
"I said no zombies. Final."
Orion puffed himself up in indignation. "Your boyfriend has a pet zombie!" he spat, standing up and smacking the table with the flat of his hands.
The motion caused flatware to jump on the warped surface, Abigail smacking her twin's forearm for the act. Cabren, on the other hand, picked up his plate to avoid losing any more of his breakfast, glaring reproachfully up at Orion for his disturbance.
The lack of response from Fetil was oppressive. While the rest of the table was quick about making sure no one else had lost breakfast somewhere, she stood straight and stared at Orion.
"Aleksei is not my boyfriend." The expulsion was almost spit out, as though the phrase tasted disgusting on her tongue. There was enough venom locked in every syllable that Evelyn seemed to wilt in her seat, slinking practically under the table to avoid the malice. "They are not pets. There is more than one. And no, you will not bring a zombie into this house! That! Is! Final!"
"What if one followed me home?" Orion was pushing his luck at this point, his tone back to whining. Not unlike a child wanting a new toy.
This was accentuated with Evelyn's muffled, "If you keep talking, I will eat your face."
"I will blow its ffffucking head off." was hissed out. By now, Fetil was audibly grinding her teeth together in an attempt to not leap over the table and strangle the Haitian.
"What do you have against zom--"
Orion had been stopped dead by Evelyn shoving a piece of toast in his mouth. She might not have eaten his face as she had promised, but it did get his mind on something else. The necromancer bit down on the toast, chewing with an energetic vigor.
"I don't know why you hate this stuff so much, Cabe. It tastes great."
As soon as the subject changed, the blood-curdling sensation of Fetil's malevolence seemed to ebb away. For a short moment, looks of relief were shared between Evelyn, Abigail, and Cabren. Oberon was too busy wiping what remained of one egg off his face with a piece of his toast to really pay any mind elsewhere. Then again, it seemed nothing really phased the geomancer.
The rest of the breakfast passed without much incident, Oberon finally cleaning himself up from the mess of egg across his face. Cabren had decided that there was a ten-minute rule on his dropped toast, especially since it didn't have any topping on it. It wouldn't have been so bad except he kept bragging about it, inciting Evelyn to call him out on making up rules for dropped food (the only time she actually made a blatant joke that entire morning) and Abigail threatening to put nitroglycerin in his second piece if he didn't shut up. Orion cracked a small joke about nitroglycerin's inability to make the aviator shut his mouth for more than two seconds then proceeded to shove the toast in Cabren's hand into his mouth.
Evelyn had finished first, as usual, citing Orion on plagiarism for her own tactic against him. Of course, this launched the table into a discussion on the definition of plagiarism.
"Plagiarism probably doesn't exist in this time-frame anymore. That or The Order claims the term as theirs too." Abigail snorted, causing everyone a part of the debate to accept that as a final word.
Oberon helped to clear the table once meals had been finished, offering Evelyn assistance in the kitchen in his typical stoic format. Evelyn's attention temporarily redirected off to where Fetil was still standing next to the brewer. It didn't take long to guess the ciu sidhe had centered her dog's eyes to bore into Orion, though she had not said a word since shooting down the Haitian's request.
Fetil was on her second cup of sludge when the dining room emptied out, finally diverting her gaze from the current target of her hatred to make sure she was pouring the goopy liquid into the cup and not down her front. Normally, she would be much more accurate but she was certainly not a morning person. Before the cup could reach her lips, Orion poked his head into the room again. There was a devious twinkle in his green gaze.
"...I'm getting a zombie anyway."
There was a deep-seated growl from Herr Kommandant, her hair visibly frizzing and the coils drawing tighter. Lips pulled back to show the peculiar dog's teeth in threat and apparent distaste, the mug of hot tar-coffee sent flying in her antagonist's direction. Orion made sure he was scarce, leaving behind a cackle of laughter, a shattered mug, and a large unnaturally dark stain where his head would have been. It was growing of its own volition.

He was upset (mainly with himself) when the man cast him as Elder McKinley instead of Elder Price like he had promised, but he accepted the role regardless. Kurt dated the casting director for a very short time after this, in an attempt to ease his own uneasiness with what he’d done, but it didn’t work out.

Perfect Date: A nice dinner (home cooked or in a restaurant), walking under the stars to get to know each other; he also wouldn’t object if it ended in sex, though it doesn’t have to.
09. HIGHLIGHTS OF HIS LIFE
Growing up in Riverdale wasn’t a picnic, but he knew that there were others who had much more difficult lives than he had
He had always been closer to his mother than his father, emulating her in many ways (including adopting some of her habits and passions as his own), and when she passed away it absolutely devastated him. He didn’t speak for nearly two weeks, and when he did he would only speak to his family. It took a few more months and much more therapy before Kurt finally started returning to his old self.
His father was and is unaware, but after Aaron ran away when Kurt was 17, he has kept close contact with his brother on a fairly regular basis; he doesn’t agree with the way Burt treats Aaron. Kurt might not understand Aaron’s desire to be in a gang or put himself in dangerous situations, but he also knows his brother wouldn’t be involved in anything he couldn’t handle. In the last year or so, he hasn’t been able to talk to him for as long as he would like because of his own busy schedule (employed as a secretary at Vogue.com as well as auditioning for shows), but he still makes sure to carve out time in his schedule to keep tabs on his little brother.
Being the son of the Sheriff didn’t exactly make him popular in high school, but he didn’t let the bullies stop him from being himself. That being said, after a particularly hard year being bullied in his Junior year - he spent much of his Senior year keeping to himself. He didn’t voice his opinions as much, but he instead chose to set his sights on his future. New York City and the New York Academy for the Dramatic Arts. Auditions for the prestigious school were brutal, with only fifteen people around the country being accepted to the program he wanted each semester, but Kurt was over the top excited when he received his acceptance letter.
In the eight years since leaving Riverdale in his rear view, Kurt has truly come into himself. In recent years, all his hard work has finally started to pay off, and he’s managed to make a name for himself in the Broadway circuits. It took him a bit, but Kurt finally managed to land a leading role for himself in the Broadway show Newsies, where he’s been playing the role of Davey. Before this show, all of his roles had been in Off-Broadway productions, ranging from extras to leading roles.
As much as he loves New York and Broadway, though, when Kurt received the call in the middle of the night that his father was in the ICU at Riverdale General, having suffered a massive heart attack, he put his life on pause and came home to Riverdale to help take care of him.

Spring 2018 Anime First Impressions
Two weeks into the season - basically on schedule by my standards! This season, as always, has ups and downs as well as popular shows I’m not watching (Megalobox) and shows I immediately regret starting (Devils Line). As a further point, I don’t do impressions of sequels, and in this case I’m including Steins;Gate 0 as a sequel because it is so based on the events of the main show. Regardless, here’s what I’m watching with MAL links and original shows marked:
Legend of the Galactic Heroes - Die Neue These (MAL) Look, I'm not going to immediately say go watch the original LOGH, but I'm kidding that's exactly what I'm going to say. LOGH is a masterpiece in every sense of the word. My issue with this series is not that they will not represent the characters badly, but that 110 episodes shoved into 12 episodes and three movies is simply not enough. LOGH has a scale, a grandeur, a weight that is conveyed as you invest yourself into it for hours on end, from bombastic space battles and the minutiae of day-to-day politics. You need both scales, the imperial and the individual, to really experience LOGH, and I feel like 12 episodes isn't enough time to have both. The LOGH remake looks and sounds fine (though with way too much CG and a bit of same-facing with Reinhard and Kircheis), but I am incredibly nervous about the pacing. This is a first impression, and if Production I.G. pulls this off it will be a classic reimagined for a modern audience that deserves it. But I simply don't think that's going to happen. I'm hopeful, but apprehensive. And again, watch the original. It is pure class.
Persona 5 the Animation (MAL) Play the game first. Please.
Devils Line (MAL) A world where vampires exist under the guise of normal people and some lose control and kill under cover of night. Basically Tokyo Ghoul with less of a vampire "society" and more just individual threats, with more of a sexual twist. Tsukasa is our helpless college heroine, adrift as she finishes school, when she finds out the guy who likes her is a serial murderer who wants blood! So wacky! She's saved by Anzai, a calm, collected member of the agency tasked with dealing with vampires, before unintentionally revealing himself a vampire. Yet we are expected to just accept Anzai forcing himself on Tsukasa because he's the savior? Right. Background sound design isn't bad, art/animation are bland and at times awkward. Devils Line is trying real hard to be a new Tokyo Ghoul, but now with more sexual undertones for whatever reason. Pass.
3D Kanojo: Real Girl (MAL) Ah, otaku love. At least it can't be worse than Saekano, right? That'd be a serious challenge. 3D Kanojo follows Tsutsui, an otaku that suffers the typical ostracization of anime, when he meets Iroha, a blunt girl who for once doesn't ostracize him. The first episode has plenty of the classics - falling into a pool, talking about "3D women" being out of his league, heroics when he knows he can't win. Everything you'd expect. By the end of the episode, things progressed a helluva lot more than I expected, in many ways. It seems thus far that the otaku thing is the impetus for Tsutsui's low opinion of himself, rather than anime being the point of the show. More introspective than I would otherwise think, I think 3D Kanojo holds a lot of slight surprises. It's interesting, for sure, and I hope it continues that way.
Tachibanakan Triangle (MAL) One of two short anime I'm watching this season, Tachibanakan follows a girl who moves into a girls apartment complex and gets more yuri than she bargained for.  We've got the fang-sporting short one, the quiet one, the onee-san, the blonde foreigner, you name it. I don't expect a lot of character development or anything similar, but three and a half minutes of yuri sounds just fine to me.
Uma Musume (MAL) First off, props to the show for making the horse girls' names just as stupid as those of real racehorses. I mean, I know it’s because the girls are named after real racehorses, but still. Uma Musume involves a world where horseracing is hugely popular, only the racers are anthropomorphic horse girls. Our main girl is Special Week, a newbie transferring to a popular racing school in Tokyo. She's your typical genki type - eager, energetic, bright-eyed. Enthralled by one of the top girls Silence Suzuka, she aims to become one of the top horse girls in Japan. Oh, and the top horse girls perform as idols after each race. This sure is a mobile game adaptation, god damn. P.A. Works' art looks solid as always (props to the flowing tail animation); the OP and ED are pretty standard idolish stuff. I prefer the ED. Anthropomorphic racing is fine, yet for some reason the idol part is what makes it weird for me. This show is strange, but if it's not much more than cute horse girls doing cute horse girl things, I'll keep paying attention.
SAO Alternative: Gun Gale Online (MAL) I hate SAO. I have a laundry list of reasons that I despised both seasons of SAO. The reason I'm giving GGO a chance is because the main charater is a girl playing a cute chibi girl in-game and she just wants to make friends. Hopefully, that will avoid the terrible pitfall that was anything relating to Kirito. GGO starts right in the action, with a topical Battle Royale mode putting our pink girl and her partner right into the action. The tactics are good and help set up the basic premises of the gametype, if that necessitated a bit too much monologuing by M, the partner. Also, plenty of pouts. Always a bonus. As always the invincibility of the protag is annoying, but I don't really expect breakthrough plot changes from an SAO spinoff. I mean, SAO S1 was good for the first 10 episodes too. Keep this cute girl and not-harem, focus on connecting with others through video games rather than shanking perverts in a parking lot, and it'll be solid.
Hinamatsuri (MAL) A super-powered middle-schooler falls into the life of a nicer-than-normal yakuza. Nitta is the yakuza, with a penchant for fancy porcelain. Hina is the middle-schooler, your typical otherworldly killing machine set into an unfamiliar world. Hinamatsuri puts a lot of good spins on the taking-care-of-a-supernatural-girl trope, with the main character being a yakuza rather than an "average high schooler." Furthermore, there are some nice father-daughter vibes going between the two, though it's clear Hina maintains the upper hand. Won over by Nitta's refusal to use her as just a tool, their life together begins. The comedy is your standard boke/tsukkomi, but the lightning-quick delivery of the lines had me cracking up regardless. Hinamatsuri looks like it could go darker any second, but if it doesn't I'm perfectly content to stay around.
Comic Girls (MAL) Probably the most classic cute girls doing cute things show this season, Comic Girls follows a group of mangaka girls living in a dorm together. Moeta is the worrywart crybaby, Koyume's the genki blonde, Ruki is the less-than-secret pervert, and Tsubasa is the tomboy. There's plenty of nice compliments between the girls' personalities, and Koyume and Moeta seem like a great fit as the newbies in the group. Furthermore, their personalities being informed by the manga they draw allows for a nice exploration of manga cliches through their interactions. This looks to be more on the character-driven side than a deep dive into the logistics of manga production, but that's just fine. Animation and sound aren't really anything special, but they're by no means bad. As a slice-of-life fan I'm all in, even if this show doesn't turn out to be anything super unique.
[ORIG] Tada-kun wa Koi wo Shinai (MAL) Tada-kun follows, well, Tada-kun - a student and photographer who runs into Teresa, a rich European while taking pictures. Tada-kun, following the show's title "Tada Doesn't Fall in Love," has a calm, somewhat stoic demeanor, while Teresa is your bright, beautiful girl finally in the Japan she'd only seen on TV. After meeting multiple times as Teresa wanders lost, Tada helps her out of the rain before she finds her hotel, right next to his family's coffee shop. And then, of course, she transfers into his school along with her bodyguard, the fiery-tempered Alec. The art is crisp and animated well, and both the OP and ED have their charms. I personally like romance focused tightly on a single pair (Tsuki ga Kirei and Ore Monogatari are two stellar examples), and I hope this delivers. With a single couple development becomes the key, but if this show keeps it up - increasing interactions leading to discovered feelings, all starting from a photo (sounds a bit like Just Because, don't you think?), this will be a emotionally engaging experience.
Fumikiri Jikan (MAL) The other short show I'm watching, Fumikiri Jikan is about conversations while waiting for the train to pass. The first episode ran the gamut all the way from peppy slice of life to romantic character drama. Being so tightly focused on conversations and with limited time, a show like this needs to nail the dialogue to set up the characters each episode. I felt like I almost watched a movie in three minutes this time, and that's a good thing. The main sticking point is that with individual stories each time, quality can vary wildly. This show is a bit strange but equally interesting, but it will certainly depend on the story being told.
Wotaku ni Koi wa Muzukashii (MAL) Ah, otaku love. It can't be worse than Saekano, right? That would be a serious challenge. Wotaku ni Koi puts a spin on the genre by situating the main characters as adults who met each other in middle school and just now reconnected. The main cast of four and especially the banner couple Hirotaka and Narumi are uniquely quirky and their personalities gel so well with each other. Despite the long gap in meeting each other I feel the chemistry immediately between the two, and as episode one ends with their relationship actually beginning I'm all in. Not only does Wotakoi change things up by having the main characters as adults but it also gets past all the roundabout bullshit that often bogs down high-school romances. Furthermore, the true enthusiasm with which Hirotaka and Narumi can nerd out about what they like is refreshing, kind of like Animegataris before it became the Matrix. Combine that with a crisp art style and great musical themes, and maybe Wotakoi can provide the grounded otaku love story we've been waiting for. Oh, and fuck the Saekano shout-out. Not that I'm going to let that cloud my thoughts on Wotakoi - I just really, really don't like Saekano.
Golden Kamuy (MAL) This season's "a popular manga is finally getting an anime" show, Golden Kamuy is the story of a soldier and an Ainu girl suriving in the north of Japan in the Ruso-Japanese War era just after the turn of the 20th century. The pair aims to find a hidden treasure, stolen from the Ainu and stashed by a criminal somewhere, with the location hidden on tattoos of various escaped prisoners. I enjoy historical shows, and Kamuy is great in that it is more than just feudal Japan or something similar - the snowy, late-Meiji Hokkaido setting is undoubtedly unique. Sugimoto, the soldier, has earned his nickname "Immortal" due to his war exploits, and his personality shows it - confident in his skills yet cautious of threats. Asirpa, the Ainu, is the resourceful, collected partner Sugimoto needs in the wilds of Hokkaido, and shares Sugimotos motivations, having lost her father to the criminal who hid the treasure. The art is clean, and while the main characters look good there needs to be mention of the awful-looking CG of the two bears and the wolf that make appearances in the first episode. It just looks horrible. The dynamic between Sugimoto and Asirpa is great - the contrast between violence and peace especially - and I look forward to see where they're going. I only wish the overall tone was more consistent - the first episode is a great solemn look at the task in front of them, while the second episode inserts a whole lot of "comedic" moments that seem out of place with the action and Sugimoto himself. Regardless, quick shout-out to Man With a Mission for the OP - one of my favorite bands and this song is no exception.

The Devil’s due
Sarah (Arcana OC) X Julian (Arcana) Follows the main plot story, with changes. 2.5k words. ________________________________________________________________
Chapter 3 : Theatrics.
It's barely any time at all before their meandering stroll leads the troublesome duo to their destination. A small spark lights in Julian's eyes; a beaten up and scruffy looking shop sitting quietly beside the street. It feels old and weather-worn, the windowless walls already carry a small air is mysterious security. Sarah mused quietly to herself, intrigued by why a 'teahouse' would be so closed up. Though she had suspicions that this wasn't really the type of place Julian's prior description would actually be.
What once might have been a gorgeous display of fresco style art was now worn and dilapidated. The paint strokes having cracks following thin lines and heavy discoloration of their 'romantic' scenery. "So it is still standing." He barks almost triumphantly, making Sarah giggle silently in her head. "I used to come here all the time, back in the day. It was an irresistible spot." His looming figure leaning just a little closer over her hadn't gone unnoticed. "High ceilings, great ambience… little booths, tucked away~" The innovation to his words made her shrink; desperately resisting the urge to turn beetroot red by staring ahead at the building in fascination. "And underground. You could lounge around for hours, just talking. And we, ahh, I've been meaning to say, we do… we do need to talk"
Do they really? Haven't they been trying to talk all morning? Not that Sarah has had much of a say the entire day so far, including this morning when they had left the house. And 'Just talking.' Why did she doubt that? An enclosed space likely containing some form of purchasable liquor was bound to rile some folks up and attract the secretive sort. Though, just thinking about it, that does sound awfully Julian… a renewed sense of danger tingled across her shoulders but it wasn't a frightening flight or fight response. Eagerness, perhaps? A willingness to adventure let's say.
He pushes lightly on the wall and it creaks angrily open. Not sounding rusted or underused despite the aged appearance it held, no dust flying from its hinges. Julian ducked under a low wooden beam while Sarah merely needed to briefly raise a hand to make sure she didn't catch her hair on any rough edges. She squints in the dark staircase, eyeing Julian's gloves as he tries to pry open a stubborn-looking iron door. Eventually managing to get it to budge aside before putting a palm on Sarah's shoulder and leading her in. "After you, my dear."
The atmosphere is immediate and undeniable. While it's very dim it isn't badly lit. Lanterns hang from old ropes here and there while all around them drape loose moth bitten cloths. Alongside them, the ceiling sports long dropping fabrics of bold complicated patterning and design. There's a heavy air fighting between smelling comforting and smelling boozy. The actual walk space is narrow, Sarah's hands instinctively appearing up at her chest in anxious support. All around them sit strange and unique looking artifacts and random piles of what might seem like junk to someone who didn't know better.
Julian, pushing her ahead slowly, regularly stops her in her tracks to check around an upcoming corner. Each time he leans over her head She catches herself looking up at his chin, trying to figure out what in particular he's looking for…
It eventually hits, lighting a little bulb in her head. There are voices in here… as much as she tries to see the confined spaces and thin walkway make it impossible to tell where anyone is; though she's absolutely certain the place has other people in it. Julian's eye wanders from searching, down to Sarah's sweet if a little aimless look of confusion. "Well… this is all very unlike the way I remember it-" he assures quietly, not that she quite believes him. This place has his name all over it, from the awkward spacing to the dark but cozy atmosphere. "The place must have gone under… that's a shame." He sighs, heavily, a nostalgic look in his single lantern-lit eye. "They used to serve this smoky tea that I haven't been able to find since."
He sounds disappointed… yet keeps leading them further into the fray. More interesting items passing by as she finally takes note of a few to try and identify their use or origins. A big metal moon, clearly hammered together roughly, with a wise and timeless smile. Large swaths of fabrics laid haphazardly over a very high-backed chair. Many weapons, mostly a cluster of shiny tipped spears and a few open chests of assorted trinkets like messy feathers and old worn brass bells. "It seems to be some kind of… oddities… antiques… artefacts? Emporium." He drones out before she could say the same. "How embarrassing… it's still cozy though."
A hand had drifted idly down to her hip, which she hadn't noticed until he pulled just a little, tugging her closer. The raised brow and wide smarmy grin he wore made her snort; quickly covering her mouth from the awful noise and pushing him back away with faked anger. He goes to do it again when something catches his eye, causing it to widen. "Now what have we here…" Sarah, tracking his line of sight, looks over to a large mirror. The glass old and dusty, it's surface speckled with mold. And perched atop it… is a doctor's mask. Much like the one she'd watched him relinquish the night before.
He snatches it from its place, almost as if to hide it, while her perceptiveness catches sight of boots coming from behind the mirror. They too vaguely resemble the high leathery boots Julian has on, causing her brow to furrow. "What's this? It's not really a medical mask, is it?" He fumbles curiously to himself while examining the long bird-like apparel. Tapping its beak, peering intrigued into its glassy eyes, before flipping it over to look inside. "We used to stuff the beak with-"
"Herbs!" She finishes quickly, a sudden jolt wrestling with her shoulders. "R...roses and camphor…." Her voice is barely over a whisper but the initial outburst must have been of quite a surprise as Julian stares at her with a wide eye. "It's… not a real mask. The lining is too thin, and it wouldn't cover the face properly... Those eye holes are too ornamentally shaped-" her hands reach over to point out the flaws, leaving him speechless in their wake. Just staring at her for a moment before all the colour goes to her cheeks and snaps him out of it.
"Er- yes- you're quite right I… didn't expect you to know quite that much about…" He frowns down at the fake mask. Looking into its sightless gaze in silent contemplation before Sarah swiftly changes the subject, feeling her ears burn red.
"Can you hear that?" There's a brief pause, both straining to catch what she meant. "Voices…" Another silence...And then it finally catches up. She wasn't lying, there are for sure sounds coming from nearby. The previous conversation seemed to have derailed Julian's cautiousness; which was now back in full force. His whole body beneath the angular clothes that widen his frame goes unmistakably stiff. She was sure should his gloves have been off she'd see his knuckles grow white from the pressure they were gripping the mask with.
"Yes." He hissed back, a notch quieter than her inquiry, nodding just past a long drawn curtain. "Coming from…. Over there?"
The soft background buzz of idly chatter quickly cascades into a mournful wail. It gives both of them quite the start, but… something about it puts its sincerity to question. It was warbling and almost tuneful. Comically fake sounding and very over the top. "Sounds like somebody's faking it." He huffed, halfway between relieved and unnerved. Fixing the false mask securely over his face much to Sarah's surprise. As if out of habit, almost, completely auto-piloted.
Curling a free hand around hers he slowly holds the other up to the beak of the mask as if gently shushing her. Pulling her along towards the sound of the cries taking care to not knock over empty bottles that littered the floor. Towards a distant heavy-looking pair of curtains. They were drawn tightly, only a small gap, widening from top to bottom. Dust particles danced excitedly at the sharp beam of light coming through from the other side. Peering through, the source of the hysterical wails, from beside a heavily torn cradle on the other side, was… an actor.
Sarah's shoulders dropped at once, a heavy but silenced exhale of relief parting her lips. Taking a second to collect herself before peeking back through. The man too wore a mask, though very different from Julian's. Porcelain and only half-covering with exaggerated streaks of mascara that were smudged from 'anguish.'
"Wait up in my room? On my birthday?!" He mourned, loudly, "What do you expect me to do all night in here? Clomp around in my hooves? Beg the busboy for table scraps?! If I can't disgust anyone doing it, what's the point?"
"Oh my god." Breathes Julian, trying to hide his sneering expression with an even bigger grin. "That's fantastic, it sounds just like him." Him? She looked again out at the 'distressed' man, pouring his heart into the role of an angry, vengeful, and pompous bastard. Was that supposed to be...
"Count Lucio?" She whispered, still unsure of that answer, as Julian leant a little further toward the curtain. This must be a theatre! She didn't even know Vesuvia had a theatre. Even without word of it around town, the seats appeared to be absolutely packed with an audience. Laughing along to the cheeky dramatization of their former count. It seems to be quite a popular thing in this part of town.
"Well I'm glad to see the arts are flourishing. A renaissance may have begun while I was away." He cheered before looking suddenly quite stricken. "But… if this is about Lucio on his birthday then…. You don't suppose this is a show about the murde-"
Much like the rest of today Julian's thoughts never come to completion as everything goes wrong at once. The audience's roaring laughter is just barely outshined by a heavy sandbag that lands with a THUD between them, the curtains starting to close. During that same second the speeding rope quickly catches around Julian's ankle, hoisting him effortlessly high into the air like a deer caught in a trap. Sarah's eyes squeeze shut at all the sudden movement but when she dares open them again quite the sight is ahead of her.
Julian. Suspended upside down on stage in front of a silent crowd absolutely frozen for at least a heartbeat. She can see the split second it takes for him to plan his next move before he thrashes wildly. Wriggling like a snake caught by a bird; something small and shiny flying from his boot. Something he just barely has time to catch, a knife. With a hard grunt of effort he swings up to fold in half, only just managing to grab the rope at his ankle and swipe wildly, severing it- Falling clean out of the sky with a hard 'whump'. Not onto the stage. But rather Count Lucio's lap, the both of them looking mighty caught out.
"....Doctor Devorak! Here to cure my boredom!" The actor for Lucio cheers after a tense pause, rolling with the occasion despite its unusual nature. The crowd adores it, exploding into shrieks of laughter and applause, while Julian appears visibly nervous. Sarah can see his throat bob uncomfortably with a hard swallow.
Unable to watch, knowing he'll be more than embarrassed, Sarah backtracks immediately. Only getting a turn away before pacing densely back and forth without thinking. Oh my god what the hell just happened. Oh no he's going to die of anxiety-she should have done something about it! What would she even do?! Feeling jittery and suddenly confined she flees for the exit. Retracing their steps mindlessly in a speedy trot. Managing to get free of the building and immediately press herself against the stone cold mural of the wall.
Why would there be a play about the murder!?
That's awful. A real murder not even a made up one… and worst of all nobody has a clear memory or story of the event! She begins to pace immediately once again. Debating whether to run further away with a growing bubbling guilt. Luckily only a few steps into the pacing…
"Sarah, there you are. What a trip, I'm still one foot in the meta realm." Comes Julian's usual comedic attitude as he fumbles noisily out of the door. Clearly just a little disturbed by what happened. "Well… the good news is nobody seemed to think it was really me." He huffed, sliding some messy locks of hair out of his working eye. "Was the neighbourhood always this sceptical? Probably…"
Realising that even here, where he is comfortable enough to walk the streets, Julian is a wanted criminal Sarah's face goes pale and shaken. The sight makes his smile drop a little. "So that wasn't what I had in mind…. Let me try again." An exasperated sigh escapes her tired mouth before both of Julian's gloves take her hands and hold them steady. Looking forlornly down into her eye, obviously asking for yet another chance to go somewhere.
Her feet hurt and heart was still hammering unhappily, but she took a deep breath and squeezed his hands softly. "I'd like to head to the raven for a bite… If you'd be so forgiving as to join me?" Owwhhhh, her weakness. Being polite. She puts on a clear pout to let him know she's unhappy, one he responds to by looking fairly embarrassed. But…. She doesn't say no, instead rolling her eyes. "My treat, of course. And… after that-" His thumb brushed over the top of her knuckles, almost forcing her to melt on the spot. "A… nice walk down to the docks. How does that sound?"
"It sounds like you're buttering me up." She grumbles, though not aggressively, avoiding eye contact for a good minute. Perhaps it would be a good idea. a free dinner and…
The idea of heading home felt like something to avoid. The thought twisted her stomach. She'd only been around him a day and a half but already his chaotic aura had pulled her into so much… mischief. Besides the past few days nothing much had been quite as fun as today, even with the interruptions seeming annoying at the time on reflection they were enjoyable. "Alright… but I'm paying next time."

Down So Low
So this is a quick little fic I wrote about Willa’s journey to her final moments against Wynonna as she goes below where Peacemaker sent her. I will be adding it to AO3 soon as well. Title and lyrics from “Down So Low” by Royal Deluxe. Warning this does contain depictions of child abuse and domestic violence.
Down, down so low How deep into the ground can one man dig a hole? Down, down so low Leaving you crying out, have mercy on my soul
It was her earliest memory. She must have been three, certainly no older than four. Mama had given her a stuffed bear- he was a raggedy old thing, with black buttons for eyes and flimsy arms the perfect size for her little hands to hug. She had screamed with joy when Mama gave him to her- this was her bear. Willa’s bear. She can’t remember if Mama had made him by hand; she may have, seeing as how all of Willa’s dresses were hand-me-downs or hand sewn for her. But Willa loved all of them because they were hers. Even her little boots with the big hole by her big toe made her happy because they were all hers. Growing up she knew her family never had much, but as a baby none of that had mattered. Nothing had mattered that day except her bear. As soon as she grabbed him from Mama’s hand she ran to the living room to show Baby Nonna, who was sitting up on a quilt with a rattle in her chubby hand.
“Nonna, Nonna looookkk!” she squealed, shoving the bear in the baby’s face, almost knocking her backwards. “He’s my bear Mama gave him to me he is brown and small like you! He’s my bear but-but I can share him cause you don’t have a bear cause you’re too small.” Willa knelt down next to her sister, who cooed and reached out to squeeze the bear’s snout with her free hand. “Yeah Nonna he’s soft- but don’t eat him though please that’s nasty!” She hurriedly pulled the bear away as her sister tried to take a test bite of his snout. The sudden movement through the baby off balance and she toppled forward. After a moment of silence, digesting what had just happened, she began to cry out. Willa looked up to see Mama rush over to pick up the baby and gently rock her to calm her down. “I didn’t do nothing Mama she tried to eat him and she fell I didn’t do nothing!” Willa yelled, her voice cracking on the final ‘nothing’. Mama smiled down at her.
“I know you didn’t mean to, sweetheart. But remember, Nonna is little and we have to be careful with her. Babies are helpless when they’re little. So you have to be a big, responsible girl for me.”
Willa nodded fervently with her eyes wide. She was a big girl. So she had to be responsible and good and careful.
It was at that moment the front door slammed open, signaling Daddy was home from work. Nonna began to wail again, and with that ended Willa’s happiest memory.
And she still was. Protecting her Nonna, that is. She’d learned so much in her 29 years but most of all she had learned:
“That death can be a mercy.”
The look on Wynonna’s face told her that she did not understand.
It was her 6th birthday. There was no party- the Earps didn’t do parties but that was okay. Willa really didn’t have any friends in Kindergarten anyways. They thought she was weird and smelled funny and had a boy name. Nonna, four years old and sprightly as ever, was her only friend. Mama had made her her favorite cake- chocolate with funfetti icing, cause she could never decide if she wanted vanilla or chocolate cake so Mama just mixed the two. She blew out the six candles and closed her eyes tight to make a wish. ‘I wish I could get a horse’ she thought to herself, really almost prayed. Daddy was standing in the door frame to the kitchen, staring at his boot. He’d been moody lately, not that he wasn’t usually. But Willa saw the bottles. And those bottles made him mean. Mama patted Nonna on the head as she wiggled in her seat, eager to dig into cake. She looked over at Daddy.
“Is there anything you’d like to say to your daughter for her special day?”
Daddy scoffed and looked over at Willa, his face hard to read. Maybe it was annoyance, or anger. Or pity.
“Her special day is 21 years away, Wendy. She’s just marking time now.”
He walked over to the table and sat down across from Willa and her cake. He reached into his boot and pulled out a pistol. It was old, anyone could see that, but well taken care of. Willa saw herself reflected in the freshly- polished silver barrel and gulped. Daddy had told her stories about this gun, and everything it had done. Everything it meant to her family, and her legacy. Peacemaker. A name like that should bring a sense of ease but all she felt was rising terror.
“You see this gun, Willa?”
She nodded, not taking her eyes off of it.
“This will be yours in 21 years. And with it, every last one of those 77 revenants resurrected from Hell will be yours too. It will be your responsibility to put every last one of those sons of bitches into the ground and to do that you need training. You’re old enough now to hold a gun. Not this one-”
He flashed Peacemaker a final time and slipped it back into his boot.
“-but this one.” He pulled out a similarly designed pistol, probably nearly as old, and pushed it across the table to her. “Your training begins immediately. There is no time to waste because you have to be ready. If you’re not, they will kill you and Nonna and every last one of us!” His voice rises on the last words. Willa fights back the tears, because he cannot see her cry. Mama looks heartbroken and is covering Nonna’s ears, cause she doesn’t need to hear this. She only wants cake. Willa looks to Mama for help, but she knows there is nothing to be done. The Earp Curse is coming for her whether she likes it or not.
That was the end of Willa’s childhood.
Peacemaker clicks. She tries again but another click. “Wh-what happened?” She feels the tears coming but she holds them back. They will never see her cry.
“You went wrong.” Nonna doesn’t fight the tears.
No. No she didn’t this is the only way to save them all. To free them. If only the stupid gun would shoot. She cocks it a third time and that’s when her side ignites in a splintering pain.
She was eight years old. Her and Nonna play tea party with their stuffed animals. Tea party guests this evening include a Raggedy Ann, a porcelain doll that Willa was half sure was haunted but it would just have to do, and Mr. Plumpkins, her bear. Willa holds an empty tea cup up to Mr. Plumpkins’ mouth and makes slurping sounds as “he” drinks. In her best British accent (still quite a poor one) she says “Jolly-ho Raggedy Ann that is some fine tea you brewed up today! Now can I have a scoonnee?” Willa elongates the word as she reaches over to pick up an empty plate and place it in front of Mr. Plumpkins. Nonna laughs and grabs Raggedy Ann, ready to respond.
But it is at that moment Willa’s bedroom door bursts open, the old wood in the frame cracking from the force. Her blood runs cold.
“WILLA EARP WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING UP HERE?”
She stands up quickly to face her father, bear still in hand. She keeps Nonna hidden squarely behind her, Nonna who is burying her face in the Raggedy Ann doll to hide her whimper.
“We’re just playing Daddy I forgot about training I thought you said you had work today!”
“The hell you were just playing who do you think you are? Some sweet little girl?!” With this he lunges forward and grabs her by the hair, whiskey on his breath, leaning in to make sure she gets the message that follows.
“You are the goddamn Earp heir you don’t have the goddamn time to play ‘tea party’ with Wyn or anyone else! What did I say about this kind of slacking off huh? HUH?” He yanks harder on her hair and she can’t stifle her tears anymore.
“You said they all die! If I slack off they’re all dead!”
The silence that followed was more deafening than Ward’s yells. Taking a moment to see that he was satisfied with her answer, he roughly let her go and stood back to his full height. Subconsciously, Willa tightened her grip on Mr. Plumpkins, and it did not escape his notice.
“Wendy never should have given you that damn bear. Making you think you could be just like any other kid. You’re done here.”
And with that he snatched Mr. Plumpkins from Willa’s grasp. She screamed before she could stop herself, which earned a slap across the face from Ward. She was instantly silent and looked up at him, hand gingerly touching the growing redness on her cheek.
“I’m throwing this damn bear out in the woods, and when I get back you better have your gun loaded and ready for target practice, got it?”
His voice was quiet now, which made him even scarier. Willa pursed her lips and nodded, taking in a deep breath to steady her nerves.
“Yes sir.”
Ward nodded. “Good”
Then he left. And with him went the idea that the Homestead was even a home.
The creature roared as it wrapped a tentacle around her bleeding waist, and Willa knew it was time Wynonna learned. Learned the truth.
“You see Wynonna?”
Her lungs were already running out of air.
“You can never really go home again.”
And when the creature pulled her backwards she screamed with all she had left.
She was 11 years old. She was out on a walk around the Homestead’s land with Nonna, careful to always stay on the Homestead land- never leaving it so the Revenants couldn’t touch her. Daddy was quite clear about that rule. It was a rare moment, when she was free to just be, and she chose to just be with her sister. Everything was good for once-
“Nonna, Nonna lookit what I found in the bushies!”
-except for that thing. The tiny girl ran out of the bushes and up to Wynonna, holding out a brown fuzzy mess. She was jumping up and down and babbling a mile a minute as Wynonna took a look at the doll. After a moment recognition dawned on her face and she turned to Willa.
“Willa it’s Mr. Plumpkins! I guess Daddy wasn’t that good at getting rid of him.” She scoffed as she brushed some twigs and leaves off his fur, “Can’t really say I’m surprised; he’s drunk off his ass most days as it is.” The tiny girl, Waverly, was now grabbing at the bear with tiny hands. Wynonna held up a hand to her.
“Now Waves I know you found him and you want to keep him, but he actually belongs to Willa. We thought he was lost a long time ago. It would be nice if Willa could have him back don’t you think?”
Waverly scrunches up her face as she stands still a moment and thinks. She then smiles and waves her arm above her head like she’s had a dramatic light bulb moment, “I think Willi would be very very very happy with her bear back I know I would be so here Willi here’s your bear.” Waverly took the bear from Wynonna and held it out to Willa.
Time seemed to stand still for a moment as Willa looked at her bear. Her bear. The one Mama had made for her as a baby. Her favorite thing in the world. But then she had grown up. She wasn’t a child anymore, and hadn’t been for a long time. She was the heir now. And Mama had left. The bear almost seemed to mock her now. Mock her with the past. And she couldn’t stand it.
She grabbed Mr. Plumpkins and threw him back into the bushes Waverly had pulled him from. “Put that damn thing back where it belongs!” she yelled at no one in particular. Waverly looked at her big sister and blinked back tears as she ran after the bear. Willa quickly turned around to march back to the Homestead but Wynonna grabbed her arm.
“Whoa there partner; where are you going what the hell was that about?” She gestured to where Waverly now sat cuddling the bear. “She was trying to be nice.” This last sentence was whispered. Wynonna knew Willa had never liked Waverly. She didn’t really understand why but it was no secret she had no affection for the youngest Earp.
Willa did her best to hide her face as she knew the tears were coming. The stupid tears showing her stupid weakness. Seems like they could never be beaten out of her like Daddy hoped.
“That stupid bear was for a different me, Nonna. A me who’s been gone a very long time.”
It was all Willa could say and Wynonna, while only nine, understood. She had learned a lot in her nine years, more than any kid should have to learn. She reached out and wiped a tear from her sister’s cheek.
“You know I’m always here for you, right?” She whispered.
At that Willa fully faced her, eyes red and puffy.
“Don’t you ever say that Nonna I’m the one here for you. It’s my job to protect you and Daddy and everyone in this goddamn town because only I can!” Her voice cracked but she fought to hold herself together. Crying would accomplish nothing.
And after all that, her Nonna just shook her head. “No. No no no. Willa. Yes only you can shoot Peacemaker. Yes, you have to kill those Revenants. But that doesn’t mean you’re alone. While you protect us, I will always protect you. Cause Mama ain’t. Daddy sure won’t. So I will. And don’t even try to fight me on this one.”
And Willa hadn’t.
They say you see your life flash before your eyes when you die. But Willa didn’t see everything. She only saw what mattered. Who mattered. Through her blurry vision she saw Peacemaker glow blue, and in a voice so hushed she could barely make out the words, her Nonna said:
“Make your peace.”
And with a crack it went dark.
Oh Lord, down so low

The painful truth about teeth
By Mary Jordan, Kevin Sullivan, Washington Post, May 13, 2017
SALISBURY, Md.--Two hours before sunrise, Dee Matello joined the line outside the Wicomico Civic Center, where hundreds of people in hoodies, heavy coats and wool blankets braced against a bitter wind.
Inside, reclining dental chairs were arrayed in neat rows across the arena’s vast floor. Days later, the venue would host Disney on Ice. On this Friday morning, dentists arriving from five states were getting ready to fix the teeth of the first 1,000 people in line.
Matello was No. 503. The small-business owner who supports President Trump had a cracked molar, no dental insurance and a nagging soreness that had forced her to chew on the right side of her mouth for years.
“It’s always bothering me,” she said. And although her toothache wasn’t why she voted for Trump, it was a constant reminder of one reason she did: the feeling that she had been abandoned, left struggling to meet basic needs in a country full of fantastically rich people.
As the distance between rich and poor grows in the United States, few consequences are so overlooked as the humiliating divide in dental care. High-end cosmetic dentistry is soaring, and better-off Americans spend well over $1 billion each year just to make their teeth a few shades whiter.
Millions of others rely on charity clinics and hospital emergency rooms to treat painful and neglected teeth. Unable to afford expensive root canals and crowns, many simply have them pulled. Nearly 1 in 5 Americans older than 65 do not have a single real tooth left.
Over two days at the civic center, volunteer dentists would pull 795 teeth. A remarkable number of patients held steady jobs--a forklift operator, a librarian, a postal worker--but said they had no dental insurance and not enough cash to pay for a dentist.
Matello had both problems, adding to her frustration about being cut off from a world that many wealthier Americans take for granted.
“The country is way too divided between well-off people and people struggling for everything--even to see the dentist,” she said. “And the worst part is, I don’t see a bridge to cross over to be one of those rich people.”
Matello voted for Barack Obama in 2008, thinking he offered the best option for working people, but she sat out the 2012 election. Last year, she rallied behind Trump after listening to him talk about “the forgotten men and women of our country, people who work hard but don’t have a voice.”
“I’m running to be their voice,” Trump said repeatedly.
What Matello heard was a promise “to restore pride to the working poor.”
A big part of that promise was Trump’s assurance that he would build a “beautiful” health-care system to serve every American, a system that would cost less and do more. But nearly four months into Trump’s presidency, Matello sees Trump backing a Republican health care plan that appears to leave low-income people and the elderly worse off.
“I am hearing about a number of people who will lose their coverage under the new plan,” Matello said. “Is Trump the wolf in grandma’s clothes? My husband and I are are now saying to each other: ‘Did we really vote for him?’”
Matello said she has no option but to keep hoping Trump will devise “a plan so we can all feel the benefits of a better economy.” But since he took office, Trump has focused on so many other things--most recently, his decision to fire the FBI director--that Matello has begun to wonder about his promises to the working class.
Straight, white teeth are associated with social success--just about everyone on TV or with a big job has them. People drop $2,000 per tooth on porcelain veneers to hide the smallest imperfections. Trump has unusually perfect, snow-white teeth, prompting numerous cosmetic dentists to publicly note that he seems to have had expensive work done.
“If I see someone with perfect teeth, I think, ‘Oh, man, they’re out of my league,’ “ Matello said. “Us poor people ‘status’ each other. We’re like, ‘Ah, dude, you don’t have any teeth!’ Or if you see someone with little jagged yellow stubs, you think, ‘Oh, man, you have lived here your whole life, haven’t you?’ “
“Here” is Maryland’s Eastern Shore, the poorest part of one of the country’s richest states. It’s a region famous for chicken farms: Perdue’s national headquarters is here in Salisbury, a town of 30,000. Matello lives 20 miles north, in Laurel, Del., near fields that sprout corn, watermelons and soybeans.
In these rural areas, even the water can work against people. Many homes, including Matello’s, rely on well water. Unlike water from public systems, well water is not fluoridated. Nationwide, 25 percent of Americans are not connected to a fluoridated water system, and therefore, are missing out on what the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention called one of the 10 great health advances of the 20th century.
“It’s all well water, no fluoride,” said Patricia Higgins, one of the dentists volunteering at the Salisbury clinic. “In these places, we see people with a different level of dental problems.”
George Acs, director of the dental department at Chesapeake Health Care, a clinic near Salisbury, said people with oral pain and infections are inundating hospitals. Last year, more than 2 million U.S. emergency room visits were attributed to neglected teeth.
“What I am seeing is absolutely horrifying,” said Acs, who recently testified about the problem before the Maryland state legislature.
Although those hospital visits cost an estimated $1.6 billion a year, the ER is generally not equipped to fix dental problems, Acs told lawmakers. So ER doctors just medicate people with “a perpetual cycle of antibiotics and opioids.”
That cycle is feeding a nationwide epidemic of opioid addiction. Meanwhile, Higgins said, Americans’ increasing reliance on all kinds of drugs is further ruining their teeth. Many drugs cause dry mouth, which leads to more cavities. When she started her practice 35 years ago, she said, people took far fewer prescription drugs. Now patients hand her computer printouts with long lists of them.
Matello’s problem wasn’t complicated: A molar shattered years ago. The 46-year-old mother of three had not seen a dentist in nine years. When parts of her tooth broke off, she knew fixing it could cost hundreds of dollars, and other bills were always more urgent.
Then she heard on TV that the nonprofit Mission of Mercy was coming to the Eastern Shore to host one of the free dental clinics that had drawn overnight crowds in Nebraska, North Carolina and other parts of the country. So she decided to take Friday off.
Matello and her husband own a small vending-machine business called DeeLicious, spending their days restocking 69 machines installed in factories, schools and office buildings. They offer granola bars and other healthful snacks, but Snickers sell best.
Life was easier before the recession hit in 2007. Her husband managed a furniture warehouse, making more than $70,000 a year, and she sold fishing boats, adding to their income. But then people stopped buying big-ticket sofas and boats, and they both lost their jobs.
So they started buying vending machines and earn about $47,000 a year. Matello said she doesn’t know if the country’s rich-poor divide is worse now, but it sure feels more “in your face.”
“I am just fed up with it,” she said. “I don’t do Facebook. It’s ‘I went on this trip’ or ‘I got this new thing.’ You know, I really don’t need to see how great you are doing. It puts me in a state of depression.”
She said people judge success based on what people wear or where they live, and she even catches herself doing it. Washington, for example, is just 150 miles west, but to Matello it feels a planet away, totally out of reach.
“It’s a beautiful city to drive through. But I could never live there. I wouldn’t fit in,” she said. “I don’t have the toys, the education, the money to live there. We have nothing in common. That divide is why you see lower income people rising up, being mad at affluent people.”
And teeth, she said, “are the telltale, visible sign of wealth.”
The Washington region has one of the greatest concentrations of dentists in the world, with many offering high-end services in offices that resemble luxury spas. More than 50 million Americans, by contrast, live in areas officially designated by the federal government as Dental Health Professional Shortage Areas. A great many of them are working poor.
“It’s completely skewed. You have the fewest dentists where the need is greatest,” Acs said. He recently sent a patient here with impacted wisdom teeth 120 miles to find a dental specialist who accepts Medicaid.
Louis Sullivan, a physician who was secretary of health and human services under President George H.W. Bush, said “broad systemic problems” block access to dentists.
First, new dentists often start out with significant debt, and they gravitate toward wealthy areas where they have a better shot at making money. The typical graduate from a four-year, post-collegiate dental school owes $260,000--more than the average medical student.
Then they set up solo practices, shouldering pricey overhead--equipment, office space, a receptionist--that accounts for much of a patient’s bill. While younger dentists are more likely to join groups that share costs, the century-old model of the solo practice has resisted change.
Then there’s the matter of payment. Teeth generally are treated separately from the rest of the body, a tradition that dates to dentistry’s origins as a specialty of barbers, who performed oral surgery and pulled teeth. Today, many public health officials view that division as a mistake. Poor oral health can lead to heart disease and other serious medical problems, and tooth loss can lead to depression and difficulty eating and speaking.
The separation extends to insurance. Even Medicare, the federal health program that covers 55 million seniors and disabled people, does not cover dental problems. For that, people must buy dental insurance, which typically limits annual benefits to about $1,500 per person--an amount that has barely budged in decades, even as costs have risen.
The price of employer-provided plans varies greatly, and can cost a family $500 a year or more, industry experts said. For those whose jobs don’t offer dental benefits, it can be even more expensive. So tens of millions go without: More than a third of American adults have no dental coverage, according to the ADA’s Health Policy Institute.
Children’s coverage has been improving. All states are required to provide dental benefits to children on Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program. Obama’s Affordable Care Act currently requires medical plans to offer dental care to those younger than 19. But that requirement--and the dental benefits of 5 million adults newly covered under the ACA--are jeopardized by the Trump-backed health overhaul now being debated in Congress.
Adults who are poor enough, and live in certain states, can get coverage through Medicaid, the state-federal health program for low-income Americans. But only about 38 percent of dentists accept Medicaid--about half the rate of physicians--in part because of low reimbursement rates. On average, Medicaid covers about 37 percent of the bill, according to a recent ADA analysis. Dentists who don’t accept Medicaid also complain of bureaucratic hassle and high rates of canceled appointments.
In a handful of states, Medicaid offers no dental coverage for adults. Delaware, where Matello lives, is one of them. Which is why, on a damp Friday morning, she found herself lining up with hundreds of other people with aching teeth.
At 9:44 a.m., five hours after arriving in Salisbury, Matello finally made it inside the civic center and began to warm up.
“What do you need done?” she asked an older veteran in a wheelchair.
“Need nine teeth pulled,” he said. “My wife works at Rite Aid, and we don’t have any insurance.”
A little after noon, Matello’s number was called. A volunteer took her temperature; she was running a slight fever but not high enough to stop treatment.
Two more hours. Finally, she was waved over to an X-ray machine under a basketball hoop.
Just as Matello expected to be called for her turn in the dentist’s chair, a volunteer announced in a loud voice: “Those up to number 500 will be seen today. The rest will have to come back tomorrow.”
“You have to be kidding!” yelled a frustrated woman behind Matello. “I have to do this all over again?”
Matello’s eyes filled with tears. She had been waiting 10 hours.
A volunteer gave her a wristband that would put her at the head of the line the next day. So she drove home in her 18-year-old Jeep, ate dinner chewing only on the right side yet again, and set her alarm.
By 7 a.m. the next day, she was finally in one of the reclining chairs, with a dentist pointing a bright light into her mouth.
Robert Testani, a volunteer dentist from Catonsville, Md., examined Matello and checked her X-ray before easing a syringe of novocaine into her mouth. He prepared to pull her broken molar.
“Don’t worry. This is routine,” he said. He paused and looked around. “Except for the setting.”
Over two days, 116 dentists treated 1,165 patients, providing $1 million worth of fillings and other care, according to the Mission of Mercy. Matello was grateful. She was told her panoramic X-ray and extraction would have cost $600 to $800 in a regular office.
She looked at some of the others who had come here, despite working for a living cutting down trees, building homes, minding a town library, running small businesses.
“We are not staying home, not sleeping and living off the government,” she said.
She wondered why there wasn’t a better system for people like her. She tried not to look at the 51-year-old truck driver lying next to her who had three teeth pulled, his mouth stuffed with bloody gauze.
“I am trying to think that this is not demeaning,” she said as she cleared the chair for the next person in line. “But it is. It’s like a Third World country.”

Straightforward, really, and then a amazing appeal right here at The amazon website. Recently i obtained committed and placed this place on my small windows registry. I was aware I needed Corelle mainly because it’s so tough, and so i have zero fascination with expensive Chinese suppliers. And my nephew is happy to experience grown all of my former things! The one thing I prefer around the place is the way small amount of location it does take up while in the cabinet. I had 12 significant Andamp; 12 average dishes inside a single bunch with continue to supplemental room or space! They’re narrow but so review, it’s excellent! I’m happy with my new set in place!
I prefer Corelli and have used this label continually. I instructed these and have used them for around per month. Virtually every solo platter has warped with the dish-washer. They not any longer bunch good and appear strange. I don’t determine if however these are knock offs or maybe if an issue improved, but my out of date Corelli recipes have not ever warped.
Tricky to whip Corelle for almost every-morning dinnerware and they meet the status. I swapped out an extremely older fixed which had some potato chips and shattered designs in the a long time of usage that they had experienced and they are the similar excellent. I uncertainty that I’ll have to get a second that is set in my life-time, yet if I really do I’d purchase these once again.
I obtained 2 for these for my partner. Progressively now we have had been able remove many different articles for our mature place. Cheap and sturdy. Really enjoy the greater cups. Superb established. Also i obtained on this website 2 of your coordinating helping platters, some 6 luncheon dishes and also a establish if3 much bigger covering dishes. The partner loves the efficiency of the nation Bungalow develop.
As mentioned in some other Corelle evaluation, I really like their food. This is actually a excellent demonstration of their straight forward structures. They generate much more active and vibrant equipment but this type is best up my alley.
Ordered this establish as additional dinnerware when now we have enterprise that also includes young ones. Adore it a great deal of we apply it ordinary. So light-weight and superb in dish-washer and microwave oven.
They are the complete cutest foods. They’re quite simple to completely clean and then the district bungalow design and style is lovable. It’s small bouquets with hearts and minds included. If only the greens dinners and then the cups ended up some much bigger, but apart from that, however these are fantastic. There’s absolutely no reason to enjoy loads of cash on meals when Corelle can make a really wonderful item.
Foods are more or less slim and in addition we have been coming back them. I do believe it is always good for one initial-time-out-on-your-own personal, but we necessary an increasingly rock solid placed.
It’s top quality material. I’ve fallen it on linoleum devoid of crevices or breaks or cracks. The covers in good physical condition effectively nonetheless won’t be microwaving them. The covers are attractive sufficient for any dining room table.
Device was amazing, appeared punctually and immediate solution. Excellence of the Corelle solution was really good accent portions absolutely are a little bit really expensive and we’ve selectively procured them and not all.
We have used Corning Ware for a bit and discovered which it was only overweight and used up an excessive amount of room or space in your dish washer. Though it has been a superior collection and exciting it really failed to healthy our demands. Desiring a light-weight and uncomplicated to maneuver place we select the Corelle Livingware and therefore are happy and pleasantly surprised. It truly is lightweight and supports the equivalent amount of meal as being the more heavy Corning. Cleaning moves quick and then the dish-washer cleanses it clearly. The length of the elements sorta mandates your implementing modest amounts understanding that ain’t all awful. I’m not enamored because of the glass, having said that. Java is actually a pillar right here in fact it is not unique to endure 4 total containers day after day regardless of the cost at crazy concentrations. Satisfying a small mug like this the initial one is a little bit a large amount of. Surely, having said that is that often you should wake up and check out the java cooking pot more regularly and that is certainly really good originating from a caloric using item. When lowered the cuisine just jump available and thumb their noses. All round, I am just you need to along with the each day mother nature herself of such portions all of which will utilize them for a significant whilst.
My spouse and that i have normally enjoyed Corelle An evening meal Puts for every single day use. Now we have employed this manufacturer during the last 45 several years.
This is a great product or service the key difficulty We have influences imagine the little dish seems to be the 8 1/2″ however is not, this is basically the 6″ dish now I am going to choose the 81/2 ” dishes for one more $20.00.
Sent excellent – good expense when compared to other establishments. You can’t outshine Corelle food, as compared with people. They will be tough, lightweight, microwaveable, freezable, easly stackable, or anything else. My dads and moms utilised every one of them with my child years, and that i used them within the past 22 quite a few years with our kids. (We have other cuisine for proper use, however. These include laid-back, each day cuisine.) They certainly burst – yet it is tough to bust them. In most cases once i rest a recipe, it’s due to the fact I lowered a product hefty atop it – not considering that it tumbles on the surface. (I do not possess a floor tile floorboards, although.)
What is not to ever really enjoy about food that happens to be very light, crack proof, cheap but fairly? I actually have an older group of nation light blue corelle who had a cherry design in glowing blue across the edge I hadn’t had the opportunity to enhance. Desiring far more plates for your periodic increased visitors I selected to provide some other collection of nation browsing pink rather then adjusting hue plans. However, not a coordinate, they are going to combination effectively. My partner wants these cups towards the teacup kind of my elderly placed. For ages when attemping to use in my corelle, their meals were actually stoneware and overweight. These are best for the entire family with children and teenagers, seniors or those that have fingers/arm sturdiness much like me. These foods are likewise without difficulty cleaned out.
Amazing tough recipes for every day use! These pick up amazing Andamp; are really attractive foods!
A bit more frustrated given that the dishes seems as if they are created from synthetic. They also nonetheless check Now for each day use and also get in hand for any picnic or comparable. I actually have absolutely nothing damaging by any means associated with level of quality so i have zero suspicions they might last longer. But probably almost nothing I am going to use to have a fine meals. Cost is actually decent.
My better half i have formerly chosen Corelle cuisine for countless years. We purchased them when are in college or university and utilised them for 20 years with only a handful of bits ever previously splitting during that period. The plates even made it through 3 military services shifts. Your only good reason that we gave up on utilizing them was considering that a member of family decided to buy us a fresh group of food and in addition we didnAndrsquo;t have place to prevent the two units. Our selection to utilise the brand new variety of dinners was really a giant error in judgment that any of us regretted for many years. Other model of recipes was a lot of bulkier as compared to the Corelle and also their outstanding had not been even near to CorelleAndrsquo;s. The opposite manufacturer not merely considered a ton, they chipped and shattered readily, had been too large for a lot of microwaves and got more to micro-wave nutrition on. This coming year we chosen that we all could not stay all the other label of cuisine these days and chosen to invest in a new range of Corelle recipes. We requested two collections of the nation Bungalow service plan for 4 considering that we desired a sufficient amount of dinners for 4 folks. We obtained our plates on Dec 5, 2013 and quickly situated them inside our dish washer and we all could begin using them. We had been so satisfied how the food easily fit in our dish washer with no need of knocking into the other similar to the other make probably did considering that the dishes were definitely so massive. We have been excited using our obtain! There is absolutely no comparability. The meals are a lot far more light-weight and sturdy. The structure is rather with violet blooms about the sides and tells us in our very first collection of containers. We shall do not ever make your oversight getting a make of recipes except for Corelle yet again! Professionals: The food are light in weight. They put onAndrsquo;t split or nick readily and tend to be supported along with a warrantee. They are really definitely worth the amount: We received them in a super offer exclusive and compensated $17.99 per collection but we might be glad to spend the money for $27 money that Amazon marketplace currently corelle dinner plate set is charging you on their behalf.

Although thinking about purchasing new containers for my home who has children and teenagers.
Although thinking about purchasing new containers for my home who has children and teenagers.
Normally i consider my grandma obtaining Corelle dinners i do take into account losing them and in addition they by no means appeared to escape. With that in mind I began my analysis for several days I scrolled by way of amazon online marketplace and skim ratings and examined structures and that i retained returning to this routine additionally, the Corelle model I found myself buying it. I am just thrilled i have Everyone loves the shade it matched up my house (wasn’t seeking ) so we have right now acquired them for just a bit across 4 weeks and that we found out that stability that is there numerous a long time ago a my grandmas is there. The tiny young people have decreased a couple dishes certainly nothing has developed no french fries no Splits cleaning is fantastic in addition I confess oftentimes I am just to sick or hectic to complete containers immediately after dinner time while having permit them to rest. After I have traveled to do them not much stays directly to them (continue to does plates manually ) I am going to spend money on much more of these recipes enjoy that service has not yet replaced any system when coming up with these plates and also point this company has been in existence for such a long time displays my be worn out yet still !!
With Corelle your choosing many years of customer support and level of quality. This particular product will provide you with numerous years of use designed to continue for as long it is really addressed. With Corelle you will almost always be satisfied that it could carry on a long time useful. This Corelle Livingware established is long-lasting, dishwashing machine free from danger and also meals are found about unbreakable. Very good benefit and may keep going for a life time. These would be not the Corelle food of worn out that noticed discounted and cheap. These come to feel a lot more like asia yet are light in weight. The porcelain ceramic glasses may also be tough but contrary to the dinners, they might nick should they be fallen. The food is able to go from freezer or fridge to your microwave oven without troubles. They are offered out stunning right after a perform within the dishwashing machine and also the colorings tend not to reduce.
The plate placed was presented perfectly jam-packed with lots of packaging substance to circumvent any harm. This routine is extremely attractive, modest and then a tension relieving lighting blue colored. it is designed for children with kids and we also put it to use inside your household as day-to-day food. The favorable chinese suppliers happens for special events only.A pleasant range of foods for a good total price.Lightweight, very easy to bunch and wash.Once they turned up one of many dishes possessed a minimal hit towards the bottom,I known as 800 quantity they usually transported an alternative. Should I experienced my druthers the food will be a very little much deeper, the dishes substantially less heavy and then a small wider, even the greens dishes a tad more substantial. This set in place replaced instead some intense porcelain food as well as at very first they sensed like substantial papers dishes but we have the experience of them now. Some testers say when they escape they shatter but window is comparable to that.We be cautious. The foods complete a awesome chime when tapped accompanied by a blade..We purchased one more established.
I really enjoy these dishes together with the little pink a floral arrangement leaving pattern on it. These are generally what exactly I wanted; featherweight, elegant searching, effortless to neat and somewhat hardy to live a autumn in order to on the surface. The good thing is simply because are brightness over the control and its really simple to reduce also the most difficult of unsightly stains. The little dishes are invaluable to offer aspects or simply just for treat time whenever we are transferring in the home. I merely need these people were a little bit more substantial. The cups accompany all of those other set in place clearly. These are generally lightweight than other stoneware cups We have utilised and hands scrub uncomplicated. I enjoy the sunlight green shade at the cups. The main disappointed was the dishes which may have unpleasant azure and earth-friendly queues about the edge but not the attractive style within the dishes.
High quality for on a daily basis use, only matter I preferable if he or she marketed servings with equivalent design and style. In its place they provide distributed glowing blue servings. Then I failed to buy the fixed that was included with sturdy green mugs
Decided to buy these for my mother for X-mas mainly because I actually have Corelle dishes and really enjoy them. The look about them are fantastic and she really liked them. They use up much less location in their pantry shelves the stoneware placed she experienced which will make her satisfied on top of that. A large amount of daily life with this dinnerware establish with zero cups was actually a added in advantage mainly because she has an abundance.
provided secure! product packaging was very good, no omitting jewelry and probably none had been broken down. I prefer the delicious and straightforward land structure in your silky blues and veggies. 5 celebrities!
These Corelle Dishes are considered the most effective. They haven’t fall in high quality, size or resilience year after year like a great number of other and once superb solutions have. Should your not really acquainted with Corelle, these are generally quite strong, difficult to kick, however they are broken or cracked, it isn’t straightforward to. They clean up away very well as their surface area is indeed so clean it doesn’t acquire any dirt that might ensure it is not easy to clean up. They are utilized while in the micro-wave so long as you have foods on it, usually do not place them in the micro-wave without the need of food stuff on as well as them, and they can keep going for a lifetime. I truly do advise those to all people if your chat appears about food and would purchase these all over again when i ever in your life missing them or expected even more.My spouse i have used this set in place (we acquired program for 16) for an estimated per year and so we could stop being extra thrilled. There is simply one small-scale difficulty and that is certainly that most of the supplements, specially the dishes have lumps on the exterior wherein the lip is. We have this on about 4 of our own dishes. We have now lowered dishes from about 5 ft . from the atmosphere for a difficult carpet but not a mark. We use extremely kitchen knives on these dishes no scars. We fight our dishes up, as we say, and in many cases the look is retaining potent, in the dishwashing machine. The greatest thing about this gadget, except for the caffeinated drinks mugs, every thing piles amaziningly very well. We in shape all 32 dishes a single pile and dishes in an alternative and also it is not going to populate our drawer spot to the peak. That is just about the major reasons we gained these. THE Most extreme point about this goods, although the supplemental cup is unfavorable, destroying the level of smoothness of your dishes, stands out as the espresso servings. I fail to see that old a cup of coffee glass model they had, that have the complete trend on it. These I am certain continue to keep flavored coffee hotter more, having said that i ignore the existing glasses.
The dishes are light-weight colored but are genuinely really and are generally a smooth shade. They really are really lightweight. You may microwave oven them. them. They have proper care recommendations I might would suggest examining them. I,m happy with this get. My sibling picked up the same meals not too long ago and hers is carrying up true very well she actually is also utilising hers. She said they wear,t scratch as very easily as gemstone ware. They may be tiny crafted. They can be like melmac dishes in extra weight along with density. I would personally suggest these meals . They appear attractive on my small kitchen table. They are really stackable to make sure they don’t make a significant amount on resist spot .I adore that. I got myself two groups of them .In case you are interested in them acquiring shattered in email don’t basically because they mailed my own in first packing containers they arrived in and them transported all of them to me in yet another carton. My own turned up in peppermint issue and none acquired shattered.
Straightforward, really, and then a amazing appeal right here at The amazon website. Recently i obtained committed and placed this place on my small windows registry. I was aware I needed Corelle mainly because it’s so tough, and so i have zero fascination with expensive Chinese suppliers. This set in place will carry on me forever and that i spent not as much as $100 for 12 location places. I did so increase this place by incorporating further treats directly from together Amazon . com site and with the vendor. If only The amazon website previously had available all the methods. The value wound up really being relatively the same as the cost of a massive pack keep, well, i thought of receiving it there considering that I could truthfully send it back in your community if an item was incorrect, then again I thought possible the truly much time gain product lines, and inadequate services and discovered that’s absurd, Amazon . com has spectacular consumer support! So this is where exactly they got their start in. As well as, absolutely nothing to be thinking about, all sorts of things arrived totally!
