The Truth Of Appearances
One of the many secondary themes in She-Ra is appearances. Specifically, how false they are. People repeatedly put up facades that fool even themselves, and one of the villains of the entire story's whole gimmick is illusions and masks.
Enter episode five, The Sea Gate, and all the shenaniganry that accompanies that. This episode focuses almost entirely on that subtheme through the characters featured.
Let me explain.
SPOILERS AHEAD
Let's start with three of the characters who are introduced here. Sea Hawk, Mermista, and Scorpia.
Sea Hawk is introduced ego first. He is immediately preceded by feats and skills, he wins an arm wrestling match, then you hear his voice, then you finally see him. This is someone with a loud personality and a reputation that preceeds him. He's a somehow more annoying Han Solo, complete with a reference to the Kessel Run. Immediately, you are put in the mind of Star Wars and how over competent the character he's emulating is.
However, when you get to know this character, he's an idiot. He's all facade, with very little actual self-confidence, or actual skill. And he relies on force of personality to get him anywhere in life.
Mermista needs to be understood in relation to her kingdom, Salineas. Empty. Her people have abandoned her, and she is left with one guy helping her out, that being her guard/butler/harbourmaster. Salineas, like its ruler, is holding up this extremely strong facade. There's a literal wall there, but there's nothing actually there. It's empty, it has given up hope.
"It figures I would inherit a kingdom that's crumbling. But it's totally fine. I'm handling it."
This is the most blatant lie in the episode, and it is accompanied by a shot of someone staring out at a beautiful kingdom, with nothing in it. The gate that she needs to keep working is failing. This is someone who knows their foundation is crumbling.
Accompanying this with the small detail that her shoulders are flanked by statues, almost like the devil and angel on her shoulders. Tradition is keeping her stuck, tradition that she verbally mocks.
"Sure, because that went so great the first time."
And that's the key here. People are keeping up tradition for the sake of it, and that isn't working. Laura Greenwood is attributed the quote:
"Tradition is just peer pressure from dead people"
This very clearly fits with Mermista's whole deal. She's stuck trying to appease people who have long since faded.
Glimmer is in a similar situation, she's trying to impress her mother, an while Angella isn't dead, yet, there's still that attempt to appease and impress people.
The biggest symbol of this is the gate itself, created by the first ones, it has been handed down all the way to Mermista, but the first ones technology is failing, and so is the tradition that it symbolizes.
Scorpia is objectively the best character in this entire series. This isn't up for debate. I'm right. But, for the sake of discussion, let me delve into why.
Scorpia is the antithesis to every theme in the series. She is untraumatized, uncomplicated in terms of moral fiber, and when it comes to appearances and illusions, she is one of the few characters who doesn't engage with that. This is made extremely clear by her introduction. Take this shot for example:
Scorpia is designed to contrast Shadow Weaver here. Design wise, Shadow Weaver is covered from head to toe, and Scorpia doesn't believe in sleeves. Shadow Weaver uses her hair to make herself look bigger, Scorpia is genuinely that tall. Shadow Weaver is diminutive, and emotionally imposing, with a glare to fit, Scorpia is built like a brick privy and has an open smile. These two are opposites, and their influence on Catra is similar. Where Shadow Weaver is manipulative, Scorpia is entirely comfortable being a support character. And which way does Catra lean? We shall see as the series goes on.
The point I am getting at here is that Shadow Weaver embodies the themes of the series, Scorpia is a vital counterbalance to all of that malevolence.
Ok lets talk about Adora and She-Ra, because there is something fascinating here. She-Ra is uncomfortably close to Mr Hyde, the alter ego of Dr Jekyll in The Mysterious Case Of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.
For context, Jekyll and Hyde are the archetypal split personality disorder in literature. But they aren't that in the actual book. In the original text, it is made clear that nothing changes in the transformation except the appearance.
I learned to recognise the thorough and primitive duality of man; I saw that, of the two natures that contended in the field of my consciousness, even if I could rightly be said to be either, it was only because I was radically both.
Jekyll just uses the formula to transform and as a cover up for his base desires. Hyde kills a guy, and that's not an alter ego doing its own thing, that's Jekyll getting all murdery because he is free from consequences. This is a story about addiction.
And what is She-Ra? She's a physical transformation, not a mental one, that Adora refers to as a different person, who is free to do things Adora can't. She's not villainous, but on a technical level, She-Ra and Mr Hyde fill the same function in their respective lives. They are an outlet for their desires. For Jekyll, this is crime, apparently, and for Adora, this is usefulness.
Just take a look at this big empty grin that she gives when Mermista points out her importance.
But who is Mermista thanking here?
"Your friend over there can turn into a, like, eight ft. tall lady with a sword, and I want her on my side."
Even subconsciously, this is attributing the usefulness to She-Ra, not Adora. And to someone who isn't quite sure if the two are the same, that's confusing.

Daniel Watches She-Ra & The Princesses Of Power
-S1E2- 'The Sword Part 2'
Today's She-Ra Watchthrough Art: Another Messy Glimmer Sketch
Okay so, it's safe to say as of episode 2:
Glimmer is my favorite by a wide fuckin' mile she's so real.
I don't know if it's been made obvious to anyone, but in case you haven't noticed yet. I have a huge soft spot for characters that fit under a very specific aesthetic. Glimmer most certainly fits it.
"But Daniel, what kind of aesthetic is it that you speak of?" I hear you ask?
The Best Kind.
(I don't even like MHA but I do love Mina, wish the show was good)
I find it really funny that when Adora turns into She-Ra she just is like, bigger. Like one of She-Ra's superpowers is being fucking tall.
Like being tall is one of her magical abilities.
I really liked the moment Glimmer actually started sounding like she was about to cry. Phenomenal voice acting right there, that alone says so much.
Just hearing Glimmers' voice breaking & hearing her struggling to hold back crying in the middle of her rant.
It just makes everything she's been saying feel a lot more impactful now. Seeing that it had this much of an affect on her.
She doesn't even specify how many people were lost. Like, fuck she might mean it's not just a few, it's not a thousand it's probably like millions.
Like, they didn't have to flashback or explain it, just that one moment made me go "Oh shit." It tells you more than enough to understand what kind of horrible shit she's been through. Amazing voice acting right there. I love it.
Shadow Weaver is still a cunt. Fuck you shadow weaver.
Hope your pillow is warm on both sides you wizard bitch.
Also Bow was literally the best this episode he was just like so endearing & every time he spoke I had a big goofy smile on my face. He's so fucking joyful. His optimism is infectious.
What else happened uhhhhh.....
Cat-Ra is angry because idk she's lesbian or something & she's decided to make it everyone elses' problem.
Like geez, Cat-Ra was throwing a real HISSY fit at the end there.
(please laugh i'm fucking desperate here)
Also I see they kept Swiftwind in this reboot.
Please.....
PLEASE TELL ME THEY KEPT HIS FUCKING WEIRD POPEYE GRUFF CHAINSMOKER VOICE.
LIKE IN THE ORIGINAL SHOW HE JUST SOUNDS LIKE THE NARRATOR FROM DOOM 2016. IT'S SO FUCKING FUNNY.
WHY DOES THE MAGIC SPARKLE PEGASUS SOUND LIKE HE'S ABOUT TO TURN TO ADORA & THEN JUST:
"IN THE FIRST AGE, IN THE FIRST BATTLE..."
I really fucking hope he still sounds like that because it's the funniest thing ever & I adore it.
So anyways, new ship dropped.
I ship these two & they are canon & nobody can fucking stop me.
If they don't kiss I'm going to burn down a church.
Don't be surprised if most of the she-ra watchalong art is just them.
Also Hordak showed up. He seems like he's a better villain in this one but he's still not even close to Skeletor levels yet.
YAWN.
You're gonna have to wow me a lot more than that, Mr. Whore-Dak.

So I've been getting into a new show lately and a.....
She-Ra is better than Miraculous
Don't hurt me
I'll be honest, I wasn't sure about it at first. It felt blaise. Then episode 8 and 11 happened, and I started falling in love. But then the horse made me wanna die. I was starting to think Catra was the only reason anyone recommended this show(which may still be true, honestly). I hate the horse. Some minor inconsistencies were starting to bother me. No big deal
But then season 3 was AMAZING. Entrapta, I'm pretty sure, is my all-time favorite. I'm still conflicted about whether or not Angella's sacrifice was earned. Glimmer is a bad daughter. Queen Angella is in the right. Bo is precious.
Now I'm on season 4. The stupid horse finally has a purpose, but I still scream for his death every chance I get. Turns out the "Power of Friendship" was used for evil. I now hate Glimmer almost as much as I hate the horse. Adora doesn't need your $h!t, Glimmer! And why are you letting her abuser just walk around! DT is a wittle devil, and I love it.
But the best part is, everyone is in character. And that's the best when it comes to consistency. Things are lining up plot wise and character wise. The minor characters are their own individuals with arcs. I don't even care if Catra gets redeemed because her character is amazing.
This was just me getting my thoughts out. I'll probably write about this show properly later.

Hi today I present one of my favorite Shera episodes. The reunion after the spiciness of princess prom. Big oof. Al’s it’s the 4 year anniversary of the final season of Shera.
Idk why I love this show so much but I really really do. Idk. The female empowerment is so beautiful to me. The way it’s about friendship and love is so beautiful. I enjoyed every single moment of this show. From the story to the scenery and soundtrack. I love this show. Honestly there’s not a day that goes by that I don’t miss this show. I low-key wish they would make a movie or at least one last season.
Happy 4 year anniversary.

Pay Off
One way of analysing stories is by asking a question about a question. By which I mean "what question is this series answering about its plot".
For example, in the third Pirates of the Carribean film, the question is "has Jack Sparrow changed enough to give his life away?" And this isn't unique to the Pirates of the Carribean franchise, it's applicable to a ton of other stories as well. It's a question of whether or not the character development has happened, not just which side has stronger magic or bigger weapons or a better lawyer.
But if you were to apply that analytical framework to a season finale? Say, for example, The Battle for Bright Moon, the season one finale for She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. What question is that answering?
Let me explain.
SPOILERS AHEAD
In my reading of the first season of She-Ra, the series asks two questions, one focused on Adora and Catra's psychology, and the other on the rebellion as a whole. The story gives the audience the illusion that they are linked, but I'm not quite sure that they are.
A few months ago, over Discord, a user going by Emerald9D gave some insight that has been on my mind ever since:
season 1 is a lot of "ha-ha here's this happy little positive message" seasons 2 and 3 are like "oh god nobody internalized any of the lessons from the first season"
She-Ra is about breaking cycles, and one of the clever ways it does this is through its format. Each season of the series is a self-enclosed tragedy, with the exception that the last season manages to change direction at the last possible moment (season four does something interesting as well, but we'll get there when we get there). The stereotype of this is death and destruction, but it doesn't have to be.
She-Ra achieves a repeated tragedy through separating the war from the psychological story it is telling, letting victory be achieved in one side and not the other. Season One focuses on the character development of both Adora and Catra, but has it come crashing down on both of their heads in a carefully laid tapestry of misfortune. It could have easily worked out well, they could have all been friends, but the story didn't play out that way.
Catra's character progression in this season is actually the simplest she gets in the entire season, at face value. I despise the term "character arc" for reasons too complicated and petty to articulate here, but it is applicable with Catra in season one, mostly.
On a surface level, Catra's arc deals growth and failure. She rises out of the abuse from Shadow Weaver and strikes her away, she very nearly joins Adora in the rebellion, but then Light Hope happens. I already have a post about that episode but suffice to say here that it changes the trajectory.
This scene doesn't have Catra directly in it, but symbolises that trajectory shift so succinctly, and it is fundamentally about Catra. Adora reaches out for a hand to hold, and if the series had gone even slightly differently, Catra would be there. But she isn't because Light Hope tore the two apart. And now Adora's hand closes on empty space.
But, Catra doesn't regress in season one, not yet. Instead, the perspective shifts, and it is revealed that Catra has been developing in an unhealthy direction. She-Progresses past Shadow Weaver, but without any closure. She believes that her mother figure made her strong, and recognises the abuse for what it is, but she can't recognise any of her own behaviours that were instilled in her by her upbringing.
"I already made it a lot further than anyone thought I would."
Shadow Weaver taught Catra that she was a failure, and Catra's attempt to fix her own self-worth issues was to lash out and remove Shadow Weaver from the equation. But removing a knife from a wound doesn't heal it. It's a step, but there are others that might be helpful that Catra hasn't recognised.
Instead, Catra devotes herself to the war above her own mental health and assumes that will fix all of her problems. Hold on to this thought.
Adora has a hero complex, a psychological condition defined by PeopleSkillsDecoded.com as:
"a psychological construct which makes a person feel the need to save other people. This person has a strong tendency to seek people who desperately need help and to assist them, often sacrificing their own needs for these people."
Five By Five Takes has a video on Adora's psychology that goes into more depth than I can in a post about a single episode, so I highly recommend you watch it. In said video, the idea is proposed that Adora's heroic attributes are caused by her abusive upbringing, which reframes her actions here.
Adora thinks incredibly quickly, which is a character strength, but also a weakness. It means she is easily the quickest responder to almost any given situation, with one exception that I will get to. But Adora's speed also means that things get lost in translation. She sees someone in danger and thinks "I need to save them", and she sees a loss and thinks "I caused this".
Adora had so many chances to internalise the lessons of the series. Glimmer and Swiftwind explicitly tell her on separate occasions that she is important not because she is She-Ra, but because she is Adora, and people like Adora. But No Princess Left Behind throws her off balance, and in her weakened state, who sweeps in to push her in their own direction, but Light Hope.
"Light Hope said that I'd endanger my friends by coming back, and she was right"
Adora is convinced that she caused someone to die, and Light Hope agrees with her. All she has to do to save people is stop killing them. She just needs to let go, because she did kill Entrapta. It was her fault. Light Hope can help her.
Glimmer, Bow, and Swiftwind bring Adora away from the beacon and into the war. They try to dissuade Light Hope's words, but Adora has already thought through the situation. Now she is confused and trying to reconcile her perceptions. She doesn't understand unconditional kindness, so she is tempted to agree with Light Hope because that makes sense to her. But the kindness makes her feel good. There is a cognitive dissonance there.
So, Adora ignores the problem. Instead, she devotes herself to the war above her own mental health and assumes that will fix all of her problems.
That sounds familiar, who else is doing that? Oh, right, Catra. And remember the thinking quickly thing? I mentioned that there was one exception. There is one person who processes information faster than Adora, and that, once again, is Catra.
Adora and Catra are the same person with one primary difference, expectations. Everyone has thought the world of Adora and expected her to save them. Nobody cares about Catra.
Alright, they aren't the same person. Catra is a cat, Adora is a seven-foot-tall sword lady. But does that not play into this? She-Ra is just another purpose piled upon the rest, and Catra is treated as a pest, a stray cat that wandered in and is kept around because the child of the house likes it.
What this means is that Adora internalises everything as her fault, even failures that have nothing to do with her, and Catra internalises everything as someone else's fault, even her own achievements.
The season has been trying to teach the pair that this is a problem, but the events of the season only serve to reenforce them.
"Did you really think this was about you?"
Yes. Yes she did. And so did you, Catra. That's why you lured her away from the castle, that's why you are doing this. This is very much about Adora.
The season is a victory for the rebellion. The princesses do get together and win the day, and this is one of the benefits of separating character arcs from the overarching story. It means the characters can win a battle and lose themselves at the same time.
Deus Ex Machina.
The term means "god from the machine" and originated in Ancient Greek theatre, where heroes would often be saved by a literal god interposing themself into the story. This happens too many times in the Iliad and Odyssey to count and isn't a bad thing there. They are elements of the setting. You don't need to set up gravity in a modern story for it to kill someone, the audience understands that falling kills. Likewise, in Ancient Greece, the gods were understood to just exist. So, Hermes popping into save someone because he happened to be in the area isn't unheard of. This tangent isn't really the point of my blog, so if you want more information, Overly Sarcastic Productions has a video on the subject.
This isn't really a deus ex machina. It's more of a checkoff's gun, an element set up earlier on that pays off later. I feel the need to remind everyone that Entrapta dies less than a week in universe before the finale takes place. This means that the princess allegiance needs to recover, and the fact that they get up and come back to save Adora in time is a miracle. The season is about the coming together of the Princess Alliance, so it was hinging on them coming together at all.
As a side note, I feel it is important that Mermista was the first one to arrive, because of how emotionally distanced she is. This is a character who doesn't let herself care that much, but she is taking steps to remedy that. Also, the fact that the least caring person and the bard (the guy whose job is cheering people up) rock up to save Adora is pretty heartwarming.
But I brought up the concept of a Deus Ex Machina for a reason, and that is this: The trope has a habit of undercutting character arcs. For all my love of The Legend of Kora for example, the giant spirits at the end of season two feel like a Deus Ex Machina because they aren't really set up too much. You are free to like that element, but to me it felt flat. The Princess Alliance rescue is what happens when that undercutting is intentional.
Adora is so close to character development, but then someone does the end goal for her, and she is left thinking that all the character development was a waste of time. It's not true, but again, she thinks quickly, and things get lost in translation.
The first season of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power asks two questions. "Will Adora and Catra get over their flaws?" and "Will the Princess Aliance work out?"
The answer to one of those questions is a resounding yes. The other is more complicated and leans into the series as a whole's themes of tragic cycles.
Final Thoughts
I love this episode. Despite it being my least favourite finale of the bunch, that is more a testament to the skill behind the show itself than the flaws in this episode.
The idea over discord about internalisation framed my entire rewatch of this season, as it felt so naturally true, but I wanted to be able to point to why that was. Why did nobody learn anything from season one? And people did learn things, Glimmer and Angella got brought closer by the events of the series, and friendships definitely got made. But in terms of the core character drama, this season was very intentionally a failure.
Adora and Catra got so close but fell short at the end to catastrophic effect.
Next week, I am continuing on to season two and The Frozen Forest. We'll see how things go there.

Daniel Watches She-Ra & The Princesses Of Power
-S1E1- 'The Sword Part 1'
Today's She-Ra Watch Art: This shitty Glimmer doodle.
Look I promise they won't all be garbage ;-; I promise
Okay I wanna preface: Not every post is gonna be this detailed, I didn't even intend to go on this long with just one episode but I lost track of time. Some posts I'll be short & sweet. Some I'll be long winded to a comical degree. Depends on my feeling.
I think I'll just keep it to one paragraph per episode, & only pull out the long rambles when I finish a season. I think that'll work. Yeah.
Okay so I have no idea who any of these people are because I literally just started but one of these guys is a lizard. I'm a huge sucker for lizard people in anything ever so I immediately like this fucker. He's a lizard, that is all I need. He's just instantly cool because lizards are fucking rad as hell dude.
So Cat-Ra speaks, that first fucking line of hers.
The fucking "Hey Adora"
The first fucking thing I said to myself, out loud, was the immediate reaction I had to that line: "Oh so they're gay."
I don't know if it's like canon or not but one of the things I know about this show is people ship them a lot. I have no idea if that's actually like a canon thing in the show or not but I've seen a lot of fanart of them so I know people at the very least WANT them to kiss or hold hands or get married & buy a house in the suburbs & raise like 5 kids & watch Shrek on VHS & talk about doing their taxes or whatever idk.
That being an actual thing in the show itself? Uh I guess I'll see what happens so who the fuck knows man. Maybe they just explode idk.
But like....dude. DUDE. The fucking way Cat-Ra said it was just....
SO fucking extra like that immediately felt fruity to me. I'm already getting that vibe from her. On top of that, the way her & Adora continue to interact in the episode also give off a very distinct vibe, a rather, ahem, 'fruity' vibe. I think I'm already getting the idea of why this ship is popular. I do believe I see the vision.
Also, quick tangent, I LOVE the way the animators animated Cat-Ra like an actual cat. Her hair getting puffed up when she's agitated, her ears moving to reflect her mood. Her eyes dilating like how cat eyes actually do. THEY EVEN ALSO MADE HER PURR LIKE AN ACTUAL CAT, LIKE SHE AUDIBLY CAN BE HEARD PURRING. THAT'S SUCH AN ADORABLE DETAIL & IT MAKES HER IMMEDIATLEY ENDEARING AS FUCK.
Also I guess it makes sense Cat-Ra would be into women, yeah?
Because it makes sense that CAT-Ra would be interested in PUSSY.
(Please Laugh) (I'm desperate please think I'm funny I need this)
Now moving on, let me talk about this BITCH.
One. Compared to the original Shadow Weaver, they sure did make her a way more intimidating villain.
Two. FUCK THIS BITCH??????
THE FUCK IS YOUR PROBLEM YOU FUCKING BITCHY, INKBLOT LOOKING, WACKY WAVING TUBE MAN HAIR HAVING, WIZARD-WANNABE MOTHERFUCKER? LITERALLY SHUT UP
+ NO ONE CARES & ALSO YOU SMELL BAD
+ YOU LOOK LIKE A BOOTLEG ERMAC
+ YOU'RE MEAN TO CAT-RA, I MEAN HONESTLY, WHO THE FUCK JUST BULLIES A CAT?
IMAGINE BULLYING A FUCKING CAT. FUCK THIS BITCH.
I DO NOT CARE FOR THIS WOMAN.
HER SMUG AURA MOCKS ME.
Hi so I immediately love you?? Like instantly my favorite character just from the design alone. Glimmer is so real honestly.
I also like Bow, like, Bow is just so fucking cool & nice? He's such a real one, I wanna be best friends with him & hang out he's just so lovable like he's just awesome. I love this man immediately. He deserves all the good in the world actually.
Also holy shit the contrast between Bow in the original show vs this reboot design.
It's funny, the original design WAY more gay than the new one.
The new one that a lot of people (and by people I mean homophobic douchenozzles.) complained about, the design for Bow in this supposedly 'woke tumblr sjw cartoon' has a design that is far less homoerotic in it's design & feel.
The original Bow just outright looks like a fucking gay pornstar.
He's got the trademark 'Gay Porno Mustache™' & everything.
Okay so there's a magic sword or something, etc.
They mentioned Eternia.
Okay so, one of the reasons the original she-ra was lame as fuck compared to He-Man? No Skeletor.
Hordak & literally all the villains in the original show suck ass.
They fucking suck. Hordak is just Skeletor but boring & shitty.
Why the FUCK did they not take the oppurtunity to replace Hordak with Skeletor? You don't even need to add He-Man, I'm fine with that.
But You could have just taken She-Ra & added a better villain because Skeletor fucking rules. He calls people boobs. That's fucking awesome & cool. WHERE IS HE? WHERE THE FUCK IS SKELETOR? LOOK SHOW. HORDAK WAS FUCKING LAME AS FUCK.
SO IF THIS REBOOT IS GOING TO CONVINCE ME THAT HORDAK IS IN ANY WAY A LEGITIMATELY COOL VILLAIN, THEN THEY BETTER FUCKING PULL OUT ALL THE STOPS BECAUSE IT'S GONNA TAKE A LOT TO CONVINCE ME THAT THEY WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN BETTER OFF JUST USING SKELETOR INSTEAD. LIKE, YOU BETTER FUCKING IMPRESS ME BECAUSE OTHERWISE, THE LACK OF SKELETOR IS GONNA BE A HUGE FLAW THAT YOU CANNOT OVERLOOK.
I mean, so far they managed to make me actually LIKE Cat-Ra, & the original Cat-Ra fucking sucks. Shadow Weaver sucked & so far at least this reboot Shadow Weaver is actually intimidating. But man, you better fuckin' impress me show, because the lack of Skeletor is felt deep within my soul.
OH wait hold on.
Okay I see why everyone said this show is gay now.
Anyways I didn't mean to ramble on this long about the show in just one episode, I promise this is gonna be a rare occurrence. I think from now on, I'll keep it shortened to just one paragraph per post. I'll only pull out these long posts when I finish a season or something.
Anyways uh:
