first time i watched 'no exit' i was 100% in jo's corner like oh great it's sexist dean time . wheeee let's all watch her learn a lesson about hunting and he can be 'right' in a factual way but he'll be as obnoxious as possible about it the whole time . now i think what's happening here is that he has pretty much instantly samzoned her, as a college dropout from a hunting family who has a contentious relationship with her one surviving parent. EXCEPT that she's a five-foot-something twiggy barely-out-of-her-teens woman who has a crush on him and has never been on a serious hunt before, and he's dismissive/over-vigilant enough with the actual sam, a powerfully-built man with clairvoyant powers and over a decade of experience. bearing that in mind, his behavior towards jo is barely outside his normal realm of bossy and overbearing, and since he knows a little something about how sams will respond to direct orders, he still tells her mother she's not on the hunt with them so as to avoid the fallout until it's over. basically i think the whole dean thing, his most consistent characterization over the course of fifteen years, is his tendency to express even genuine protectiveness through the medium of 'bossy older sibling', and this makes him come off like the worst person on the planet. he frequently IS, but it's actually because of other things and has nothing to do with that habit in specific

you have pictures with your son and the guy who hit you with his car but you've never met him before the accident. you wake up in the middle of the night expecting someone in your bed when you don't even remember the last time you had a long term relationship. and your son is looking to the other side of the table at dinner like somebody is supposed to sit there, and you live with a ghost breathing down your neck every second of every day, and your family keeps asking about the guy from the picture, Dean, and something in your head tells you you're supposed to know his name but it's as unfamiliar as hearing it for the first time, and you wonder how you possibly forgot a whole relationship, and why the guy from the hospital didn't say anything.

you wonder how a whole year passed and you missed it, how your own life passed you by and you missed it. and everything reminds you of the void there, and you wonder why you moved houses, why your car doesn't even have a scratch, why there's so many holes in so many stories, and goddammit why you feel so lost all the time

and you don't have any answers, and your family and friends ask you if you're okay eight times a day, and your sister is worried about you, and they ask you how come you don't remember, and you try calling the number with the guy's name on your cellphone and it says it's been disconnected, and you try googling his name and it says he's a murderer who died in st louis 6 years ago but you were with him last year, and you're left wondering why why why why why

You should have thoughts about what would happen if River Song and Dean Winchester were in the same room and then share them with me I'm too lazy to have any myself

Early seasons Dean Winchester would have a mixture of crush/mommy issues going on with River Song (same man, same. also she has an accent which I just Know he has a Thing for) and could probably be pretty easily persuaded to hook up with her if she wanted that. I don't think River Song would go for early seasons Dean bc that is Baby, but she finds the crush flattering.

Later seasons Dean and River Song have so much in common they're basically the same person and I could see them having a huge bonding moment. If I was going to rarepair ship them, it would probably be S12 and onward Dean with post-The Impossible Astronaut River. Both of them have a lot of their issues sorted out by then (Dean relapses bc of unsexy plot reasons, namely, Chuck) and are at a stable enough point that they'd actually be good for each other.

Ofc being good for each other isn't always interesting, so if I wanted messy, toxic, fun River x Dean, I'd go for s9-s10 Dean paired with River Song during and after her first attempt to kill the Doctor. I just think they'd be Neat together <3

ANYWAY ALL OF THAT BEING SAID, if they were in a room together, no matter which iteration, everyone but them is pissed off bc they're being so fucking annoying with each other.
