Disney ask game:

💖 Favorite movie?: honestly it's hard for me. But i love all the classics. But hunchback of Notre dame,beauty and the beast,sleeping beauty,snow white,mulan,and i know it's unpopular opinion but i loved pocahontas for two reasons. One i had zero to nothing for representation growing up knowing and having native background (now i might have better rep but again this was younger me) and two i just liked it face value. And that's ok. I know the real history,and i can like AND give valid criticism for a piece of media. Oh and i love treasure planet,and princess and the frog. Underrated af movies.

💕 Favorite underrated movie/show?: like i said treasure planet and princess and the frog.

💀 Least favorite movie?: i don't know. Im not really a fan of "modern" disney films. It's not that they aren't fun or good. It's just they dont have the same charm ya know? Plus older disney movies weren't afraid to get raw and real. Like bro,we aint never getting another hunchback of Notre dame.

🖌 2D animation or 3D animation?: i prefer 2d but some 3d is fine.

🌄 What movie has the prettiest animation?: honestly i can't say. There's too many i love.

🎶 Which movie has the best music?: hunchback,the lion king,mulan,beauty and the beast,honestly there's too many. I'd say hunchback has the best overall ost. Because holy shit. Im not religious by any means,not heavily at least(i do believe but not by the book but by my heart) but church choir and those chants and deep bells give me goosebumps every time.

📣 Which remake is the best?: honestly not many remakes and sequels of disney work. Some are ok but poorly executed.

🤡 Which remake is the worst?: ok as for sequels. Hunchback because of it felt like a pity movie for quasi and i hated it. As for live action remakes i dont like any of em. But beauty and the beast because i just do not like emma watson. I dont hate her,i just dont like her vibe. *shrug*

🪄 If you could change 3 things about any movies/shows, what would you change?: honestly lemme get really real for a sec. There is several movies id change but i wanna change that quasi and esmie get together in the end. Thats all i ask. And i want gaston punted into the sun. Im very simple to please.

🎥 If you could create/star in a remake, what would you do?: honestly i dunno. I'd kill it as belle I'd think but eh. I just wanna write my own movie.

🎞 If you could create an original movie, what would it be about?: any movie where the girl doesn't get with the guy. She doesn't need a sidekick. She's just doing her thing. And honestly we can learn a thing or teo from mulan. But if i could. I'd love to make a proper and honest to god movie about samurai. But tastefully done. Tome gozen movie anyone? Or a simple movie about friendship. And the importance of it. And platonic relationships being just as important as Romantic ones.

Marinette The Perfect Daughter In Law: A Prompt

[ I've seen a few ‘everyone loves Marinette AU’s’ and a couple Marvel DC ‘all the mentors want THEIR kid to end up with Marinette AU’s’ and well frankly! I felt inspired! So I present to you my new prompt / AU thing! In which all the most powerful / rich / popular people in Paris decide to play matchmaker… ]

It starts when Adrien and Kagami have a less than AMICABLE break up according to their parents and the media anyway in reality it was a really REALLY dull break up. The pair have been ‘dating’ (using each other as an excuse to go out and experience normal teenage stuff) since they were 15. Now at 17 soon to be 18 the pair decided to publicly break up in order to pursue other people and interests. The problem is they never told their parents the truth so both Gabriel and Kagami’s mother Tomeo feel protective and concerned about what must surely be an upsetting first heartbreak for their child. And okay maybe both parents take that out on each other and both get a bit defensive and protective. And MAYBE it ends with Tomeo vowing to get revenge for her daughter. Enter, Marinette. Up and coming fashion designer for the rich and famous! She’s single, talented, and as far as Tomeo knows Gabriel is interested in the girl for her talent. So what better revenge could exist but having Marinette take an interest in Kagami!

Kagami has no idea why her mother suddenly has an interest in Marinette but she wont complain about having more time with her very cute designer friend. And all the outfits Tomeo is paying Marinette to make for Kagami is giving the young fencer plenty of up-close and personal moments with Marinette. And okay Marinette is VERY cute and Kagami wont question why she suddenly has all this tine with Marinette, eating ice cream with the girl and having brunch. But she knows shes absolutely head over heels when Marinette shows up at her fencing tournament gives her a luck charm and cheers her on wearing HER colors. Obviously Kagami wiped the floor with all the competition she cant be seen hesitating in front of Marinette!

On Tomeo’s side of things she makes sure that the paparazzi still lurking around after Kagami and Adrien’s breakup catch photos of what could easily be interpreted as dates between the girls. After all this is a revenge ploy but also Marinette is fantastic so Tomeo is 300% down with Kagami ‘bringing her into the family’ something she tells Kagami after the first paparazzi ‘date photos’ leak into the news. Kagami still has no idea this was an orchestrated affair and just thinks her mothers caught on to her feelings and is overjoyed that Marinette is approved of because after the cheek kiss Marinette gave her for winning the fencing tournament Kagami was preparing to fight her mother for the right to pursue the young designer seriously. After all she never hesitates! 

But Tomeo never realized Gabriel isnt the only one interested in Marinette. Audrey Bourgeouis has been keeping an eye on Marinette trying to find a way to get Marinette on to her side and away from Gabriel. So when she sees the photos of Kagami and Marinette she sees an opportunity. After all if Marinette isnt exclusively into men (and those photos of her flushed cheeks as Kagami cleans ice cream off her bottom lip are a clear indication shes not) then Audrey smells opportunity. After all Marinette was Chloe’s first crush! How cute would that be! The next day Marinette is being offered yet another opportunity to intern under Audrey this time with much looser restrictions. When Marinette accepts she suddenly finds herself working with Chloe… A LOT. The pair are modeling together, often paired together for shoots in perfect complementary clothes that screams ‘opposites attract’. Chloe is also helping manage Marinette’s brand and the two start to get along very well. The model photos and their business lunches are soon plastered alongside the Kagami and Marinette outings with parisian gossip blogs finding their interest picked by this potential love triangle.

Chloe for one, was confused at first. Sure she knew her mom was interested in Marinette but she never thought SHE would be working so closely with her first crush. And Chloe tries to ignore it, after all those are dead feelings! And Marinette woud never forgive her anyway so why even- Wait. Is that Marinette in a downright gorgeous golden dress? A-and she will be posing right next to Chloe for their shared shoot? Well… Chloe always thought herself deserving of royalty and damn if Marinette aint the princess of her dreams. Sorry Adriken’s you had your chance to get the girl, but now its winner keeps all and Marinette is the only prize shes interested in. For the record Alya is freaked out by Chloe being nice, but shes more weirded out by Chloe being protective and handsy and downright shamelessly flirty with Marinette. Audrey is pleased when she hears the news and is quick to give her daughter encouragement acting as if none of this was premeditated at ALL.

Oh but they have no idea that this is just the beginning. Because guess who's moved back into town. Adrien’s favorite cousin and aunty. And Felix’s mom is quite the busybody and dammit Felix needs friends! And maybe a cute girlfriend! And oh whos that pretty girl on the magazine cover? Marinette? The one her celebrity connections have nothing but praise for? Perfect! Shes invited to lunch with Felix and herself on friday to discuss movie costumes! And oh Audrey dear dont you think Marinette would look fabulous sandwiched between TWO blondes! Felix hasnt modeled in a while but come now. So suddenly Marinette is being spotted with Felix guiding him about paris and modeling with him AND Chloe under AUDREY’s brand NOT Gabriels.

Felix thought hed really hate Marinette; he tried to ignore her he really did. But shes funny, witty and sweet. Not to mention trustworthy, so a good candidate for a business partner. And thats it, but then he has to admit hes impressed when he rolls up to a photoshoot and Chloe! The definition of brat personified is acting… Bearable. Yes, somehow Marinette has done the impossible! She has tamed the beast known as Chloe. And yes fine he will admit shes drop dead gorgeous and how intelligent of her to learn all sides of the fashion industry and boost her rep with modelling! Soon hes spending more time with her, he tries to argue he needs a guide, that shes the most bearable person to be with! That she is just a friend- Oh god. No it cant be! He sounds like-! Like ADRIEN! And Chloe already told him about THAT mess! No! Absolutely not! He will not lead on Marinette like his idiot cousin! Marinette is a rare and beautiful woman! She could be his queen! And god he has to admit it much as he loathes too Marinette’s smile is enough to make him thank every non-existent god. He will win her heart, show her that she deserves better than his brain dead cousin! Felix is sure mother will approve of his decision to pursue the girl, now he just needs to do more shoots with Marinette...

And that's what finally gets Gabriel to snap. Because REALLY Felix!? Is there no loyalty to FAMILY. Not to mention he was totally drafting a potential contract for Marinette when Audrey snapped her up the witch! But its fine! Marinette has always been interested in Adrien! Surely she still is? Surely she's not been swayed by any of her new suitors! Right? Gabriel knows he can't mess with Audrey’s contract so he goes through Adrien, freeing up his sons schedule and telling him to spend time with Marinette to help her ‘adapt’ to the harsh world of fashion and modeling. He uses Adrien’s heroic nature to make it sound like hed be saving her from Chloe and Felix. And sure enough Adrien bites, using his friendship with Chloe to worm into fittings, meetings, and photo shoots. At first hes just there to make sure Chloe and Felix arent hurting sweet Marinette. But when he sees the blondes fighting for her attention, flirting with her, posing with her in some rather romantic settings. Suddenly hes less worried and more… Jealous? No! Not him! Hes concerned, confused, suspicious! Obviously he needs to spend more time with Mari- Wait! When did Kagami get here to take Marinette to lunch! And why are they all ignoring him!!!

Now Marinette is fully in the public's eye. Gossip blogs are being fed bits of info writing up each ‘candidates’ appeal as THE romantic partner to the Marinette Dupain-Cheng paris new darling, the girl with a heart of gold too oblivious to see the trail of hearts following her around! But there is still another contender yet to enter the game! Jaggeds been away on tour teaching Luka his up and coming protege all the tricks. And lets not lie Luka has his own fans now, enough to rival all the others. Jagged sees Luka as his own son, even calling him as much! Hell hes even adopted Luka and Juleka and when I say adopted I mean Jagged literally got shared custody of the kids when their real dad tried to start trouble once Luka started gaining fame. Luka and Juleka for one love their adopted father and his wonderful fiance Penny. But back to Jagged, being Jagged. 

The moment Jagged is back in Paris he's checking up on his favorite designer and hopefully future daughter in law! When… WHAT'S THIS?! All the other ritchies in Paris are playing his game! Trying to get Marinette married into THEIR families! Not rock and roll at all! He was here first! And so being Jagged he decides to make Luka’s stake in the race for Marinette’s heart clear! By spamming social media with photos of Marinette being cute with Luka, taking his measurements, going out with him, the pair babying Fang, the two passed out against each other after a long concert. And he has photos going back at least a year or two! Soon Luka’s fans pick up the hype starting a trending hashtag finding the pair cute! Jagged feels confident that hes won! When Audrey retaliates, and from there its a complete train wreck. Before long each pair has a hashtag filled with cute moments and arguing over whos dating the model / fashion designer! 

Meanwhile Adrien is drowning in denial as he goes through each hashtag seething about how many MORE photos everyone else has with Marinette, when HE is her very good friend and was here first! Felix, Chloe and Kagami on the other hand have declared open war after they tried to talk to each other about the hashtags reasonably only for it to devolve into “so you agree Marinette is best with me!” - “WHAT! No! Thats not what I said! Besides she clearly is best with me!” - “Ridiculous!” And so on. Poor Luka is having an entirely different reaction hiding in shame unsure how to face Marinette because he WAS going to ask her on a proper date now that she seems over Adrien, because even with everything she's the melody playing in his heart and he had a plan! But now his mom and sister are texting him and teasing him and apparently he has MORE competition! Who do these people think they are to deserve Marinette! No! Luka won't lose Jagged has been teaching him to be bold and confident! And Marinette is worth all of his efforts! Jagged REGRETS NOTHING even if Penny confiscated the tv remote!

Marinette meanwhile has no idea what's going on because the whole class made a dumb bet on when the designer would notice with one of the bet conditions being that no one could tip Marinette off and that they have to keep her away from Paparazzi so they dont spoil it either. And sense Alya is helping manage Marinette’s social media Marinette hasn't looked at it yet so she has NO idea what's happening. But her birthday is coming up next week and Chloe definitely didn't get dibs on planning a surprise party for her all so she could spoil the girl and RUB her GREAT relationship with Marinette into her competitions FACES! The competition however (and Adrien JustAfriend Agreste) have decided that they really aren't going down without a fight!

I enjoyed this but... At first I thought, do I even have 10 I consider favs? And then I ended up with a list of, like, 25, and couldn’t pick 10 so I chose more or less at random. And I admit I cheated seeing as some kind of fit in the same fandom in some way.

It’s just too hard picking favorites.

1. Morticia Addams (Addams Family)

My tattoo probably makes this one obvious. 

I love Morticia so much, not only do I love her aesthetic, I just love her personality and attitude, not to mention her marriage is ‘goals’ and as a mother and matriarch she’s incredibly supportive and loving despite the unorthodox life the Addams’ live. I love a character that can be a mother without having it define her completely.

2. Catwoman/Selina Kyle (DC)

Selina was one of my OG crushes back before I even understood what I crush was or that being queer was even a thing (looking at you, Michelle Pfiffer).

I love her style and strength and personality (when she's well written), her grey morals and competence, and cats are just my thing, ok? Plus bisexual icon.

Have you noticed I have a thing for a dark women with grey morals?

3. Raven/Rachel Roth (Teen Titans/DC)

I kinda share a name with Raven but that's not why I like her. I've always loved the emotional complexity of this character, her incredible power (and how it's also her weakness), and style as well. I'm not too thrilled about some more recent incarnations of her but she'll always be an OG fav.

4. Nightwing/Dick Grayson (DC)

Yeah, yeah, DC again, look the other way, please (they have individual comics anyway).

I couldn't leave out my darling Dickie. I grew up with this dude and I love his backstory and relationship with his family. He's a beautiful ray of sunshine with a dark streak, a competent leader without being a broody bossy jerk like some and he's very well rounded and consistent in his characterization (plus that design is top notch). I know the Romani thing was a ret-con on something just vaguely implied in the past but honestly it was a good one and some much needed rep despite the constant whitewashing (though not as bad as others in his family).

Also, he drinks his 'respect woman juice', he's flawed without being edgy, and has been queer-coded and female-troped for decades which makes him much more likeable as a male character. He actually became an LGBT icon despite the cowards at DC constantly trying to shove heteronormativity into his storyline.

5. Rose Quartz/Pink Diamond (Steve Universe)

Is she problematic? Yes and that's part of the appeal.

I already loved Rose when she was this sweet, compassionate and wise old soul, this rebel and leader and mother with many secrets.

I guessed really early on that she was PD so that part didn't surprise me but when the backstory of her as PD finally appeared to give us so more in-depth knowledge I was surprised by the amount of hate the character got. To me, her flaws, pain, mistakes and growth were part of the allure.

Also, gorgeous and much needed plus-size rep. I loved cosplaying her more than anything.

6. Princess Leia (Star Wars)

Did I like her style or design? Nope, I much prefer her mother's but Leia is an immensely competent, wise, strong female character that takes no bullshit from the male-dominated plot around her, she deserved so much better. Honestly, she deserved her own goddamn movie.

Carrie Fisher was a feminist icon and an advocate for mental illness visibility. She's was also fucking hilarious. All this translated into Leia's character very well and she deserved so much better from society than being sexualized in a metal bikini and remembered that way forever.

7. Hela (Thor Ragnarok/Marvel)

I already loved Hela's character in the comics (except the arc where she sexually abuses Thor, that was shitty edgelord writing and I refuse to acknowledge it's existence) but Ragnarok gave her a whole new meaning.

Firstly, my God is she hot! Just.... Umpf! Step on me, queen.

Secondly, she's dark and evil but she has a goddamn point (people are hypocrites). And in the comics she's not even evil, she's neutral and only a villain because she opposes Thor on a personal level. She's also incredibly competent at what she does and if that isn't a turn-on idk what is.

8. Korra (Legend of Korra)

Korra will always be bae. There's a reason my behemoth of a fic revolved around her.

Not only is she incredibly well-rounded and fun, she's also very competent, has a fascinating backstory and is immensely powerful, plus she grows beautifully through her show. Not to mention she's GORGEOUS.

POC and LGBT rep, plus she showcased one of the most incredible arcs on disability and recovery that I've ever seen in a family show.

9. Scarlet Witch/Wanda Maximoff (Marvel)

You can pry Wanda from my cold dead hands.

I'm not even the biggest fan of her movie version, I'm all about comic Wanda.

POC rep and an incredibly visceral portrayal of mental illness and trauma. And she's beautiful beyond reason, morally grey, and powerful as hell.

Most of all what I like about Wanda is how loyal and family-oriented she is without letting it diminish her as an individual or as a powerhouse character, so many female characters loose all agency and individuality when they have kids, they get delegated to role of mother and lose their heroics or become extensions of their husbands and children, Wanda was nothing like that. Her relationship with her brother is fascinating too (let's pretend the incesty vibes in certain alt universes don't exist).

I only hate that she and Pietro always get the short stick in adaptations and their origins keep getting needlessly retconned (Magneto's kids with his Romani wife, raised by someone else- that's it, stop trying to change it and then change it back over and over). That and how she's not allowed to have her well deserved relationship with her babies because of stupid old-fashioned comic rules that led to a needlessly convuloted and far-fetch story arc (the erasure, reencarnation and hyper-aging of her sons).

10. Jessica Rabbit (WFRR)

For most people, Jessica's appeal is "she's hot" and yes, this "pinup femme fatale" look really does things to me, I won't lie about that, but that's not why she's my favorite.

Jessica is fav because she's loyal and loving to her goofy husband, she completely turns the femme fatale trope upside down for love and doesn't give a damn about looks, she uses her appearance as a weapon and she's confident but she's clearly not vain ("I'm not bad, I'm just drawn that way" and "He makes me laugh"). She's also hilarious in her own deadpan way.

some nb (neat buddhism) hcs

One of my favorite parts of this excellent set of Okina headcanons is the following:

the first visual image showed Matara-jin as a combination of two female gods and one male god. There are a number of ways you can interpret Okina’s gender, but in light of this I tend to assume Okina has been both male and female from the outset. 

Turns out Buddhist lore is an absolute goldmine of material for those of us who like to take our nonbinary headcanons a little more seriously. And so, in addition to throwing my full support behind the above nb Okina headcanon, I would like to offer my own takes on nb Miko and nb Byakuren.

Let’s start with Miko. 

If we don’t buy the “woman in disguise" and/or “historical revisionism” handwaves, then it’s natural to assume that Miko is a binary transwoman since her new body and pronouns match a binary female identity. But the explanation for Miko’s choice of new body is a little odd:

豊聡耳神子は現代に合わせた姿に変えたそうだ。

Toyosatomimi no Miko seems to have changed to a look more suited to modern times.   

If we take this to be just about Miko’s fashion and not her body, then we’re willfully ignoring the part about shikaisen abandoning their meatsuits. But fitting in with the times is a very impersonal thing that has nothing to do with the very personal matter of gender identity. We could try to dismiss the entire line as Akyuu’s wild speculation, but ZUN gives very clear indicators of when to doubt her, and I don’t think casual transphobia is one of them. 

If this isn’t just about fashion, and Akyuu isn’t being transphobic, then perhaps Miko’s choice of body is more about presentation than identity, which in turn suggests that she might actually be nonbinary since her transition rationale works against “binary woman” and her lack of dysphoria works against “binary man.” And there’s plenty of evidence that Miko simply prefers to present along binary lines without intending for that presentation to reflect a binary identity:

- uses she/her pronouns but title of 太子, which is intended for male heirs and is much closer to western “crown prince” than “crown princess”

- switches between feminine "schoolgirl with ribbon” look and masculine “Nobunaga-esque image” (SCoOW profile ZUN comment), always with skirt, sometimes combines masculine cape + feminine ribbon

- initially uses typical polite-feminine speech (identical to Byakuren’s), but permanently switches to aggressively masculine speech after HM (you can actually see her switch between the two patterns in HM)

Of course gnc binary women (both cis and trans) exist, but the point is that Miko mixes and matches from both halves of the binary in all aspects of her presentation, and there’s no reason to believe this doesn’t extend to her body, which means the usual pronoun + post-transition body combination is no longer a reliable indicator of her gender identity. She might identify as a binary transwoman, but she just as easily might not.

The case for nonbinary Miko only gets stronger as we move from canon to Kannon - specifically, the Guze Kannon mentioned in a number of Miko’s spells. At some point people started worshiping Shoutoku as a messianic (guze = 救世 = world-saving) manifestation of Kannon, and one of these people was a monk named Shinran who wrote an entire set of hymns praising Shoutoku, including:

Prince Shōtoku was born as Queen Srimala in India and appeared as Master Hui-ssu in China. 

He appeared in China to help people; he was reborn as both man and woman five hundred times.

Miko’s spells are a clear indicator that she’s based on this mythic version of Shoutoku, which means any contribution to this lore is fair game for her lore. And even if we had to pick and choose, Shinran’s contributions to Shoutoku lore would absolutely make the cut given just how hard he stanned the dude (expect to hear a lot more about this in future posts). Who am I to question the headcanons of Shoutoku’s #1 fanboy?

As for Byakuren, all we need is the fact that she’s the only Myourenji monk who actually takes the sutras seriously. And the Vimalakirti Sutra, which is pretty damn important in East Asian Buddhism, features a goddess who reminds a guy named Shariputra that Buddha cancelled binary gender:

If the elder could again change out of the female state, then all women could also change out of their female states. All women appear in the form of women in just the same way as the elder appears in the form of a woman. While they are not women in reality, they appear in the form of women. With this in mind, the Buddha said, "In all things, there is neither male nor female."

If Buddha says binary gender is cancelled, and Byakuren lives by Buddha’s words, well, you do the math.  Also cis-passing fembies are extremely valid and deserve more rep.

Incidentally, that Wikipedia link says, “another significant commentary is the Yuimagyō gisho 維摩経義疏, or Commentary on the Vimalakīrti Sūtra, ascribed to Prince Shōtoku.” As will become apparent from future posts on this blog, historical Buddhist lore is the real HijiMiko MVP.

In conclusion, Okina-Miko-Byakuren medieval Buddhism enby trifecta rights.

disclaimer of course: i’m not bi! so i’m not an Authoritative Source on bi rep and what people want to see more of. i do actively seek out stuff about lgbtq+ characters, specifically girls and women, so i have some recs! however, i’ll also be adding some things that some bi folks i know have recommended because while lesbians and bi women have a lot in common, these are at the end of the day representing them, not me :)

extra-super favorites will be bolded! i’m putting this under a read more because... i read a lot of books. and recommended a lot of them.

books:

her royal highness by rachel hawkins-- this book is a pretty easy read-- don’t expect any massive revelations about life from it, and you’ll have a good time!!! essentially, a bi texan girl named millie, after having her heart broken by her friend-turned-sort-of-gf, goes to boarding school in scotland and ends up rooming with the princess, flora. if this sounds outrageous and sappy, that’s because it is! and i love it! sexuality isn’t a BIG part of this book, but it’s discussed, and it’s just a generally fun enemies-to-lovers story about a bi aspiring geologist and a no-fucks-to-give lesbian princess and them falling in love!

fried green tomatoes at the whistle stop cafe by fannie flagg-- hello this is actually my favorite book! unlike hrh it is... a LOT to read. it essentially follows 2 stories-- one about a housewife named evelyn and her friendship with an old woman named ninny threadgoode who she meets at the old folks home her mother-in-law stays at, and the other about the stories ninny tells her about her sister-in-law idgie and her partner, ruth. the book was published in 1987, and ruth and idgie’s story is set during the great depression, so they aren’t actively labeled as lesbian or bi, but it’s made obvious enough through coding and the fact that ruth has relationships with men prior to idgie while idgie spends her entire childhood pining after ruth. both storylines are fantastic-- they have a lot to say about the lives of southern women in the 30s and 80s, and about race relations at both periods. i’ll warn you that there are depictions of extreme racism and of abuse, but it handles both delicately. it’s a critical piece of southern literature, and a landmark for lgbtq+ storytelling. as a bonus, my copy has a bunch of great recipes in the back, so if you read it you might chance upon an edition with those in it. if you like poignant period pieces about wlw relationships, women losing their damn minds, and abusive men getting what they deserve, this is the book for you! you will sob. this is a fair warning.

you should see me in a crown by leah johnson-- i haven’t personally read this one, but i’ve heard great things about it from everyone i know who has! an anxious black bi girl in indiana has to win prom queen at her mostly-white school in order to get enough scholarship money to go to the college of her dreams, but ends up falling for mack, another girl running for queen. 

@landlessbud wanted me to shout out red, white, and royal blue by casey mcquinston-- you’ve almost definitely heard about it before (first son and prince of wales, enemies-to-lovers with a side dish of political drama), and it is primarily about a mlm romance, but nora is a fabulously fun bi girl side character and there’s a lot of great stuff about figuring out your sexuality in it.

leah on the offbeat by becky albertalli-- i’ve read a lot of complex thoughts on this book, and mine are... i like it! it’s flawed, sure, and i wish it had handled a few things a little better, but you know what? it’s cute as fuck! leah is a fat bi drummer, and she’s super cool! abby is a great love interest, and she goes through a whole bi realization throughout the book. all in all, it’s just a fun wlw high school romcom with a couple solid dramatic beats and a lot of goofball shenanigans. also, if you were an american girl kid??? one scene in this book will make the entire experience worth it for you.

harley quinn: breaking glass by mariko tamaki and steve pugh-- hey, we’re in graphic novel territory now! this book is RAD. a really neat look at gentrification, community solidarity, giving people what they deserve, and fantastic lgbtq+ found families. teenage harleen quinzel is taken in by a group of drag queens, and is caught between two sort-of love interests-- mysterious vigilante the joker and classmate and community activist ivy-- and the different forms of protest and resistance they represent. the art here is STUNNING, and it’s a great read!

laura dean keeps breaking up with me, by the great mariko tamaki with art by rosemary valero-o’connell-- the vast majority of the characters are lgbt, with a lesbian main character, and the supporting cast including a bi nonbinary character, a bi girl character, and two mlm characters! this is mostly a piece about modern lgbtq+ teenagers and the way toxic relationships take over our lives. it’s one of the most cathartic things i’ve read in a LONG time, and especially if you’re at a point where your sexuality feels kind of vague, this is a great read because it embraces that vagueness by not needing to clearly label the characters and celebrates whatever point of clarity the characters are at. probably some of the most gorgeous art i’ve ever seen in a book, with a beautiful black-white-and-pink color scheme and a really neat approach to visual storytelling.

movies:

i don’t watch many movies, because i get bored really quickly hskdhskhds. but the movies i DO watch are usually gay!

wowie zowie its fried green tomatoes again!-- fannie flagg came back to adapt this into a film and HOT DAMN is it just as good. the plot is primarily the same, with some stuff obviously cut or trimmed to make it a two hour movie instead of a 450 page books fhsjdhsjhds. mary-louise parker plays ruth!!! it got a GLAAD award and an oscar nomination, and god it’s good. there are a couple scenes in here that i think are going to be in my mind until the day i die. the level of pure butch energy that idgie radiates in this film is a one-hit k.o. and it KILLS me.

birds of prey-- listen. this is not a profound movie. harley’s bisexuality isn’t emphasized, and romance is basically nonexistent in this movie. there is some... quite graphic violence. that said, this movie is so fucking fun. it’s mostly just a bunch of women fucking up everyone who crosses them while margot robbie gives a gleeful performance that you can just TELL she enjoyed the fuck out of. the last 20-30 minutes of this movie are the absolute best part, with a long sequence that kind of reinvented what an action/superhero movie could be for me. again, bisexuality isn’t a massive part of this-- it’s mentioned, and then harley just continues on in her gloriously campy outfits and breaks peoples’ knees. again, i CANNOT overemphasize just how fucking good the last 20-30 minutes are. this movie knows what it is and it embraces it. also, women beating people up in costumes that don’t horrifyingly objectify them is always a plus!

imagine me & you-- i’d be remiss if i didn’t mention this one, considering it’s probably one of the most iconic wlw romcoms. a woman named rachel, while at her own wedding, meets a florist named luce, and they fall in love. it’s a very sweet look at questioning your sexuality when you were already secure in it, and rachel’s husband wins “most genuinely understanding guy in a wlw movie” award. it has a lovely happy ending, and articles have been written about the importance of rachel being a bi character who a) gets a happy ending and b) isn’t shamed for figuring out her sexuality later on or slutshamed. this is just... a sweet movie. it’s the romcom a lot of us need in our lives. also, a LOT of floral imagery.

tv shows:

ok, i’ve got a confession. i reaaaaaaally don’t watch much tv. seriously, the only shows i’ve watched a substantial amount of recently have been parks and rec, schitt’s creek, the good place, and gilmore girls. i have a really REALLY short attention span.

that said, eleanor from the good place is bisexual!! the good place is a really wild ride, it’s half afterlife comedy half philosophical musing, and it will almost certainly make you gasp, laugh, think, and also probably cry. also, eleanor is just buckets of fun and she, like many of us, is often blown away by tahani (jameela jamil) and her beauty.

ummm shows i haven’t watched entirely or at all but that have bi women in them and seem pretty good: black lightning, sex education, jane the virgin, arrow. 

if you haven’t already watched it, do not believe what people are going to tell you about watching glee. it will drag you into a pit of despair and white men rapping, and it’s quite biphobic to top it all off.

top 5 shadowhunters characters?

oh nonny, that’s an impossible question! I fell in love with the show for the gestalt of it all, the way these people came together and created a whole greater than the sum of its parts, that is my FAVORITE THING EVER.

That said:

Magnus Bane is the most beautiful human being I have ever seen, both physically and because he is consciously, actively, choosing to be kind, day after day, and that’s stunning and so remarkably brave. 

Maryse Lightwood is everything I never knew I needed to see on TV, both because Nicola is gorgeous and because I am a mother who likes genre fiction and watching Shadowhunters (watching Maryse be terrible and then grow and change on Shadowhunters) is one of the only times I’ve ever felt like a sci-fi/fantasy setting wanted people like me in the room. (The LGBT+ rep helped there too, obviously, as I am also bi, but it’s the Grown-Up-Woman-&-Mom-Who-Gets-To-Be-A-3-Dimensional-Person that just guts me on a daily basis.) 

Alec Lightwood. They took almost every single fictional character kink I have and put them in one person. (Repressed, archery, faith, devotion, heart-eyes! You can see from space! EXASPERATION & SARCASM.) He speaks to my soul and has fucking ridiculously improbable pretty eyes while he does it.

Clary Fray, my #Princess Stabbity! I just. I JUST LOVE HER OK. She keeps getting back up, no matter what, and she will break the world if she thinks it’s necessary and never look back. She is terrifying and ruthless and so, so young. She is bright and brilliant and viciously compassionate, and that last scene with Jonathan was everything I love about her. 

And now it’s a mish-mash of everybody else? Because Izzy & Maia & Simon & Jace are all stunning in different ways, and have all been misused or short-changed by the narrative on a technical level in some other ways, so it’s sometimes hard to separate out who they’re /supposed/ to be with who the show had a chance to illustrate? 

A lot of what I love about Simon is actually what I love about Alberto, because he had Simon down from that very first second, and never wavered, and you always knew who he was, and why, and it’s AMAZING and oh no now I cry because so much of his arc is sad. But he never stops believing that his life, the people he cares for, that all of it, of them, are worth it, which is inspirational, really. I kinda want to be Simon when I grow up. Or Maia. Gods, Maia deserved better than only half-being there in s3. *sighs* At least Izzy got to be AMAZING in 3b. She ended on one hell of a high.

Jace has the best arc, I think, from barely more than a boy who wanted to be good for his family but almost systematically kept doing the worst possible things to them (especially Alec in s1 obv) beat after beat, who didn’t believe in love, who thought he was a monster, and, oddly enough, finally realized he wasn’t when he was forced by the Owl to watch himself do truly monstrous things. Because he could look at that and go: I may remember that but it wasn’t me, and it never would be and never will be. I am not that. Who got a second chance when the girl he loved and lost (several times!) kept returning to him, and he realized he could love her back.

Okay, so She-Ra S2...

God this season was so dang good jeez

Scorpia. Y’all know I gotta start with my wife and how cute she is when she’s pining so hard for everyone’s favorite prickly kitty cat. She was already my favorite character but she was even better this season!! She was just trying so hard all the time, from trying to do fine motor skills with her big ol claws to getting Catra’s attention and making her feel better, she’s just so pure-hearted I love her she deserves the world <3333

Glimmer clearly getting frustrated and Bow being a pure lil bean when they kidnapped Catra was too good. I’m so glad they found out the truth about Entrapta working with the horde.

Swift Wind and Adora bonding and fixing the tower was priceless Grayskull knows Adora needs more people to keep her from being so serious all the time.

The dnd episode. I just. The princesses are all such dorks and good friends, and everyone’s views of Catra and the Horde and themselves are just incredible. (Also shoutout to our favorite Horde idiots doing their best but only sharing like 1/2 a braincell between all four of them.)

White Out (the gay snow episode) is probably my favorite just because of how good all the character interactions were. Loopy Adora is a classic, Bow trying to talk a true Neutral Entrapta away from the side with the better technology, Scorpia and Sea Hawk becoming besties over their unrequited feelings, Scorpia still being kind to Adora even when she hurt Catra because she has a heart of absolute gold and can’t hate anyone, Catra hating the cold and trying to maintain some amount of control over her situation, Glimmer just trying to survive and convince everyone to destroy the disc, it’s all just so good.

Poor Catra trying so hard the entire season to get any approval and appreciation from authority figures in her life but can’t. When she saw Hordak trusting and listening to Entrapta more than he does to her, her face and body language and everything when Shadow Weaver was manipulating her, and her breakdown when she saw SW just used her to escape... it broke my heart </3. Poor wildcat. 

Entrapta bonding with Hordak??? I didn’t see that coming but I guess it makes sense, what with how useful she’ll be to him.

More lore!! Hordak really is an alien! He’s building a portal to other planets and dimensions, probably to get back home! There aren’t any stars in Etheria?! Who is Serenia?! Mara def ain’t as bad as Light Hope makes her sound.

Shadow Weaver’s backstory was so interesting to see. Like yeah, she wanted power, but she did genuinely want to help stop the Horde, too. And we got to see lil baby Adora! and jeez teenage Micah is precious I love my new son. 

So, the glimpse we got of the Black Garnet tells us so much about Scorpia. Like, clearly her family didn’t just surrender it to the Horde like she thinks. And this happened when Micah (Glimmer’s dad) was (barely) a teenager, so Scorpia probably wasn’t even born yet. (Unless she’s like... minimum 7 years older than Glimmer and co, in which case her crush on Catra is... less cute.) So of course she would’ve been seen as an outcast by the other princesses; she’s never known life outside the Horde, and her family has been aligned with them for long enough to get them a bad rep among the other princesses by the time she was old enough to meet them. This also explains why she doesn’t have any connection to the Black Garnet.

Bow’s dads are so affectionate and his backstory and the library and Adora’s ‘scholar voice’ and Glimmer and Bow’s friendship and Bow’s coming out scene and !!!!!!! I love this last episode so much it’s so good!!!!!!

IDK what’s gonna happen next season, except that it’s clearly gonna have something to do with Shadow Weaver messing with the princesses (esp. Adora), Beast Island is definitely gonna factor in somewhere (Catra is probably gonna be exiled there), and it’s gonna be very, very gay. And I can’t wait!!!!!!!

She has a dumbass sense that is exclusively used for her nakama and at first other people think it’s dumb and not real until on an island with their allies she just suddenly looks up like Raven when Raven is having a vision from That’s So Raven and just ominously says “they’re coming” like nobody has heard anything but then all three of them usually come running out of the forest with either the locals, large animals, the locals and large animals, or the navy after them and people can only stare in awe that is Nami.

She trains with Zoro and at first Zoro was like “what no you can’t hang” and then she could and she’s the best motivator

and zoro is not about that life

When it’s her time for laundry day she’s the gay that just throws everything together and Zoro screeches because THATS NOT HOW YOU DO THIS WENCH mihawk put him through intense training

She may seem like a hardass but she is the enforcer of snuggle time on the Sunny and when someone tries to skip it, you have a life debt that you cannot pay back

So starting this off as: I am a klance shipper hardcore. I’m queer, I want queer rep in my favorite show, simple as that. Was I disappointed we didn’t get klance content in this season?

Not at all.

Because look: this season gave us SO MUCH MORE than just that, right? There was so much happening so fast I didn’t have time to whine about my boys not being together. I’m focused all on the incredible season I just watched.

The character development? I was really happy with it! I know this fandom is notorious for saying there’s none, but that’s one of the things I think the show does really remarkably well, and I was really happy with it. Even my favorite Paladin, Hunk, got some well deserved development right off the bat! Getting to see him engineer rather than just being food boy was refreshing and appreciated. Plus, all his interactions with Pidge where they discuss science?? I love it! The show is really making an effort to show this guy is at her caliber, or at least can nearly match it (I mean, Pidge is the smartest on the team).

But other than Hunk? We saw Lance grow in a really surprising but great way. He’s more open and honest about his feelings and, even though he started off flirting shamelessly in the beginning of the season, he grew even more. We’ve seen his deep respect for the people he loves, and I think he now can truly convey that to Allura. Yeah, I think he had a little two-steps-back moment at the beginning when he was being all season one again, but hey, maybe he’s been like this behind the scenes and we haven’t gotten to see it because it hasn’t been pertinent.

I can’t even begin on Keith. Wake me up from the coma that boy put me in. Embracing his heritage, learning about his mother and father, becoming the true Black Paladin and unlocking the Black Bayard and wings? Good gravy I was ready to piss myself.

Allura? My bitch queen went OFFFFF. Y’all, I cannot say how much I love her even more. Lotor scorned her and she DEMOLISHED HIM in the best way possible. And fuck, she is so powerful now. Being able to rip into the quintessence realm and power Voltron like that high key made me cry. When she connected with all of Voltron like that, it just accentuated her place as the heart of Voltron. And reviving a human by transferring his soul? Oh my god yes.

Speaking of: Lotor. This fucker. I actually really liked where his character was taken. Yes, I would have appreciated him being more morally gray as we don’t have enough of that right now, but still. The way I see it is this: yeah, he’s technically 50/50 Altean/Galran, but even his own mother says she wasn’t there. He was raised 100% Galra with their values whether with his father or being whipped into learning by his nanny. When he was exposed in Oriande we saw him revert to his core belief of vrepit sa. He may want to embrace his Altean heritage, but he simply never had the means. The nature/nurture aspects of this show are handled very well (Keith being a great example) and I think this is just another case. Altea is there, but Galra nurture was more powerful. His ultimate demise was because he was too desperate to prove himself as something much greater than everyone believed him to be. He craved power and the quintessence exploited it. It was honestly the best way for him to go: so Power hungry that it killed him off.

And lastly, Shiro. Wow. First of all, we all fucking called clone Shiro, but I wasn’t expecting that many. Are the bodies unstable? Was Haggar under the impression he would die again? His return was incredible nonetheless. I liked how the show covered up the 84 discrepancy of “Shiro died this is is twin(?) to come take his place” while also high key referencing that fuckin mistake in the DnD ep. I’m a huge Shiro fan, but I really like that he died. It shows how deep of a connection he had with the Black Lion while dealing with the sheer trauma of the battle that, for all intents and purposes, should have killed him anyway.

As for Pidge? She got a shit ton of character development before. I love her, and I can’t wait for more, but I’m glad they focused elsewhere (Hunk!) for now. I really can’t say how much I do love her character (I see myself in her and my brother in Matt) but yeah.

Other great things (I know I should wrap this up): the animation! Holy shit, Studio Mir. The final battle in the quintessence realm had me S H O O K. The expressions were fantastic, the design beautiful. They’ve wowed me before with atla, and are doing it again with vld.

Also the detailing of Galra culture! It was fascinating to learn about what is truly an inherently violent species and the meaning behind Vrepit Sa.

ROMELLE. The whole Altean arc, really. It makes so much sense! Of course it wasn’t like all of them were on the planet when the mass destruction happened. I mean, they proved themselves beyond intergalactic travel before so it would only make sense. But just. ROMELLE. Modeled after 84 Allura as a beautiful homage and named after her cousin (sister? Niece?? Relative). High key looked like Princess Zelda but shit I was down.

Final words: this season was a masterpiece. No, there wasn’t much klance shipping fodder but I’m not honestly too mad (yet. Wait a month and I’ll be wishing my boys had their time). Personally, I don’t watch the show for just that! I get my queer shows elsewhere—I watch voltron for the quality content and animation. Would I kill for some queer content in it though? Fuck yes. Focus on the other great parts first!!

tl;dr: klance isn’t canon king (yet) but I’m not mad (yet). Character development saved the show and so did everything else.
