Wendy is SO under represented in the fandom!! Outside of her relationship with Stan at least, but I personally think sheās too interesting to be reduced to his future housewife (or just an obstacle for Kyle)!
Barely spoilers for EWILY under the cut, just including this in case anyone wants to go into the fic totally blind.
š³ļøāš - Wendy is a severely closeted bisexual, with a strong preference for women. Youāll probably find that I head canon most of the kids as being either bi or pan, but with specific leanings to either end of the spectrum. Just some of my personal view on sexuality that I wonāt get into here ahaha
š³ļøāā§ļø - Cis woman, though I do think she would lean into some degree of flexibility in her gender expression as she gets older.
š§ø - Wendy had a very happy and healthy childhood, all things considered. I do think she went through a phase of wanting a sibling when she was maybe 6 or 7, but filled that void pretty quickly via her friendship with Bebe.
š» - Failure, and not being good enough. Sheās constantly being made aware of what an uphill battle it will be to become a successful woman in our extremely patriarchal society, and sheās under a lot of pressure to prove herself. Truthfully, having to deal with Cartman has probably been great practice for her! But I think this fear also speaks to why she struggles to let Stan go; by not still trying to help him, she feels like sheās failing him.
š¶ - Though growing up Wendy listened to whatever was popular, as sheās gotten older her music taste has gotten a little pretentious. Lots of indie artists on her playlist, and I think she probably enjoys jazz and classical inspired sounds the most.
š½ - Iām not sure if it qualifies as a quirk, but Wendy does very few things casually. Sheās the kind of person that will annotate a book sheās just meant to be reading for fun, with detailed analyses of the bookās themes and recurring metaphors.
š - Wendy is a mixture of quality time and acts of service. You may be able to gather why she and Stan break up so damn often.
ļæ½ļæ½ļæ½ - I think Wendy maintains friendships very well, and can jump social circles without much issue. However, her best friend in the whole world has been, and always will be Bebe. Theyāre pretty different people on the surface, but they have a bond that runs so deep it would be extremely painful to separate them.
š - She hides it fairly well behind a pretty smile and good grades, but Wendy is a MESS!! Like, if you guys think the Style angst in EWILY is rough, you just wait till I get around to writing Wendyās side of the story. I-ā¦ donāt wanna say any more than that, heh.
šŖ¢ - Wendyās pretty close with her mom, but I think sheās not as close with her dad. Partially because he isnāt crazy about Stan (for understandable reasons) and partially because he strikes me as kind of a dick, in only the way that dads can be sometimes. They still love each other though, and their relationship will improve as she gets older.
š - I donāt get to explore this much in EWILY, but Wendy stays very busy! As I said previously she does read for fun, and sheās also a bit of a cinephile (something she and Stan bonded over, to an extent), but I also think she would participate in tons of other after school activities to keep herself occupied. Student government obviously, on top of cheerleading, field hockey, glee club, the list could go on. And of course, when sheās not doing all of that sheās hanging out with Bebe and the girls! Or Stan, I guess.
š - Dark academia queen, with a hint of twee I fear. Lots of pleated skirts and v-neck sweaters, Peter Pan collared dresses with tights, sensible sneakers or penny loafers. Hints of pinks and yellows, but her favorite color to wear is purple.
šŖ - Look, she canāt afford to get anything put on her permenant record so Wendy left her fighting days in elementary school. However she WOULD fuck a bitch up if tested, but nobody really messed with her after that whole fight with Cartmanā¦ and the, uh, entire war where she beat the shit outta several boys with her silly plastic sword.
š - Wendy is very focused on proving herself, and I donāt think she truly stops to consider what it is she actually wants until sheās out of high school and able to thrive in a new and more comfortable environment. Her largest goal in life though is to make meaningful change that benefits humanity. Awww what a good kid.
š« - While not picky per se, Wendy does her best to be healthy. Sheās a really athletic and busy person, so she gets up early to make herself a balanced breakfast and will sometimes bring her own lunch to school if whatās on the menu is particularly unhealthy. She does, however, never pass up Taco Tuesday.
š - Being happy with Stan :-) And being straight :-)))))
ā¤ļøāš„ - As much as she tries to be highly logical, sheās a total hopeless romantic. Loves love, and loves to be in love. Sometimes it becomes a bit of a distraction for her, but she gets better at balancing these parts of her life with age.
š - I havenāt gotten a chance to post any of the sketches Iāve done of Wendy yet, but I picture her as being fair skinned with soft, delicate features. Sheās pretty slender, and on the shorter side compared to the other girls. She also probably wears minimal makeup, maybe just some concealer to hide when sheās had a sleepless night. Oh, and sheās kept her hair pretty short ever since The Great Chop during The War of Trojans.
š - Oooh Wendy is second only to Kyle in the anger department, letās be so honest. And maybe Cartman? Though 9/10 times heās the reason anyoneās pissed off in the first place, so weāre not counting him here. Wendyās a passionate rager, meaning she gets pissed off about things that matter deeply to her, or when she sees blatant injustice in the world.
š¬ - Aaahahaha, breaking Stanās leg wasnāt great!! But, well, I think perhaps her most selfish move is yet to come. Stay tuned!
š¶ - Sometimes when sheās sleeping alone she still cuddles with an old stuffed animal, especially when sheās feeling especially lonely (i.e. on the tail end of another messy breakup). She would never do this in front of anyone though, not even Bebe. Sheās a little embarassed to show anything close to a sign of weakness, or a reminder that thereās still a little girl in her.
Whew!! Alright, Iām pretty sure I got them all, but let me know if I missed any! I really had to think about some of these, so thank you for giving me the chance to explore Wendy more than Iāve been able to!
Also, if you enjoy the way I write Wendy then hopefully youāll enjoy a little something Iām cooking, just for her! (Itās in the crock pot though kids, slow cooking for as long as possible!)
Thank you for sending me more of these!!
#ask Asteria#AAAH this was so fun!!!#and it took me WAY longer than it should have ahaha#but Iām happy with what I got to explore#so thank you!#ewily#exactly where i left you#headcanons#wendy testaburger

This is valid. At the same time, I think it's also natural for people to work through their feelings and try to reconcile the read they'd had on someone like this. The key point is that it better not be coming from a place of "I called it, I knew he sucked, I was right" -- because that's just self-centered, self-congratulatory arrogance. But at the very least, well, it's a vibe check. It's a learning experience, even if what you're learning is horrible.
I've been through something similar before, unfortunately. A couple cases were with people I did personally know, at least to some extent, and those were the hardest. Some rambling ahead, because I want to get a little of this off my chest. Trigger warnings for several flavors of badness.
In one case, someone in a band I'd loved turned out to be a violent sexual abuser, and I didn't see it coming, despite having been casually familiar with the guy for some time (even if our conversations were only sporadic). I still feel horrible about that, years later. I feel awful for the women he mistreated. I feel stupid for missing the signs. For a while, I even felt, however twisted this might be, kind of like a lesser person for not being more on his radar, if that makes any sense. Like, if he'd ever tried being a creep at me, at least I would have KNOWN, but I guess I wasn't appealing enough to target. Yay? Guess I suck? Ugh. These are the dumb things our minds do to us sometimes, I guess. Anyway, I had one deeply depressing afternoon of sorting out all my memorabilia, including several personal notes from the guy, and hauling them all up to the dumpster. Into the trash with you, asshole.
I still catch myself humming a line or two from his band's songs sometimes, though, and feel sick and sad all over again.
In another case, someone I'd been friendly with online who worked on a game I'd loved turned out to be...well, in a pretty similar category of asshole. The difference is that shortly after his misdeeds got aired, he committed suicide. Again, when all this started, I felt disgusted, betrayed, incredibly uncomfortably like I'd dodged a bullet, like a complete idiot, and also guilty that I was making it about me (see above re: the kind of mental churn that was going on) when others had it worse. And only a couple days later, I had to deal with the tragedy of his death, because he was still a talented guy with the capability to make beautiful things, and sadness about losing a friend. I lost him on multiple levels, really. He's gone, and the idea I had of him is gone and replaced with something worse, and the kind things he said to me when I needed them are changed irrevocably now, and a whole goddamn lot of trust is gone, when I didn't have much left to begin with. And I mean: how was this happening AGAIN?
(By awful coincidence, all of that was also going on while my mom had landed in the hospital for one of her multitude of medical emergencies, which made everything suck way worse. I note that she's gone now, too. And that relationship was plenty complicated in its own way, too -- not the same category by any means, just complicated -- although I am NOT getting into that here. Point is: this shit's hard, especially when it's people you care about.)
As I recall, that second story was unfolding around the same time as BWF's first big wave of Twitter drama. For the most part, I filed it under "Twitter's gonna Twitter" and didn't follow it too closely, because I had, obviously, other things to worry about. Still, I'd probably, finally, picked up enough cynicism and paranoia by then that some of it bled into my perception of him. It was enough for some caution. Still, I didn't tilt fully into "okay, something is OFF' until later. Weirdly -- because I guess I'm still fucking dumb and want to trust people -- that part didn't really kick in until I tried watching a couple of his solo streams on Twitch. I can't point to anything specific, but something about the vibe was so different when it was just him unfiltered and left to his own devices. It didn't take long before I just plain felt uneasy. I stopped watching. Never really went back.
And that's what I'm thinking about now. Fool me twice, shame on me, plenty of shame applies, but the third -- at least I'd learned something by the third. I might not have had cause to specifically predict this kind of incident because I'm not privy to his personal life, and don't want to be, but when this came up tonight, what I felt was not exactly surprise.
I'm so fucking sad and angry and I'm so fucking sick of this and of men in general being horrible, but yeah. Not exactly surprised.
Please, just...stop being horrible.
Friendly reminder that posting about how you ānever liked BWFā or how āit isnāt that surprising given how often he flies off the handle on Twitterā doesnāt help the situation and ignores how good abusers are at hiding their behavior.
The best thing for fans to do right now is respect her privacy by not speculating about her personal life

Hello! I apologize upfront if this is not the right space to ask about it or inappropriate in some ways, but I was wondering if you or your followers know good blogs/sources about wlw dating? I just never had any dating experience whatsoever due to severe social anxiety, but I greatly improved over the years and recently started pondering the thought that maybe I should finally give it a try. But I just don't know where to start and it feels like everybody has already figured it all out, while I'm the only one who missed the memo, haha.
Either way, no matter if you can help me or not, I want to add that this blog is amazing and the content is beautiful and I greatly appreciate all the work you put into it. Wish you all everything best. šŗš
Hello!
Don't worry, this is very appropriate, exactly the kind of thing we do here. And thank you very much for your support!
What comes to mind first is that you should find some lesbian publications. There have been a lot of magazines and they are still available, and the internet of course has communities of our own. AfterEllen and Lesbiansovereverything come to mind as great sites.
They have articles on lifestyle including dating, so you might find something there.
As for where to find a date, all my dating has happened through simply hanging out with other lesbians and bi women. Friends have introduced friends, and so forth.
Online dating seems to be all the rage. HER is an app for women, but Tinder and OkCupid have viable options too. You could also check if your local LGBT organization throws mixers, partiers or gaming nights and go there!
I think your experience is very common among LGB people though, in a way that we often feel like we've missed some important milestone being in the closet or rejecting our same-sex attraction.
But worry not, women dating women is not that different from just generally dating. It's people meeting people, and you don't have to worry about any secret handshakes or mating dances to fit in. Plenty of people struggle with being shy or anxious, and those are things you can work on (as you have! Congrats on your progress!).
Some tips:
- Think about what you're interested in and what you want and put that forward: Go after what you like, and also give other women something to talk about when they meet you. Like mention your hobbies, share your interest, use pictures where you're out doing something you like. Let your personality shine.
- Start conversations, ask questions, be interested: Where does she work, what does she study, what does she do for a hobby, does she have pets, would she like pets, where does she go when she's out to eat, etc. You could also just complement something like her hair or outfit and go from there.
- Don't assume but communicate. A couple of casual dates breeze by. Are you on the same page? Do you want to meet again? Are you looking for a long-term relationship or casual fun? Do you want to take things slow but still be exclusive? These are conversations that need to be had.
- Don't underestimate friendly hang-outs. You never know who you'll meet, where a spark might be ignited, or what might happen with someone once you get to know her better. Also, lesbian and bi friends are just as valuable as romantic partners, and a circle of LGBT friends will make your life better in ways you never knew.
A couple of tips from my friends, from their experience:
- On Tinder, women tend to be more serious than guys, but making the first move is often up to you.
- Also for Tinder, don't get stuck in the messaging phase but ask her out on like a quick coffee date to see if you can actually have a conversation in real life and do you have chemistry. (This might not work for everyone, but my friend recommended this so that the interest doesn't fizzle out just because neither one asks, and also because messaging online tells you very little.)
There we go! As always, if our followers want to rec some sites or blogs or just drop their own dating advice, go ahead! I wish you good luck in finding love!
- Lavender

(Some) Greek Gods as Historical Figures
So some days ago I secretly logged back into Mythology and Cultures amino and I stumbled across post of casting historical figures as the gods from Greek mythology. Of course, I hated it, so I made my version of this.
Note: Of course, this is going to have quite a lot of Napoleonic figures, since I am more familiar of this period, but please do reblog this post (or tag me on another post) with the hashtag ā#mythical figures as historical peopleā and add some more of your historical figure Greek God fancasts!
Note 2: this post is for entertaining purpose, and just me introducing some guys to yāall and I am not a historian myself and hopefully you all would still like my takesš
1. Zeus - Louis XIV of France
First and foremost, I shall introduce the king of gods featured in Greco-Roman myths. You may ask, why donāt I cast Henry VIII of England? Well, my reason is very simple: Henry is far from accurate to Zeus in actual myths.
To be honest, Zeus has a more āabsolute powerā energy in it, and Louis XIV totally has rocked it (like that iconic line ālāĆ©tat, cāest moi (I am the state)ā). Well, Henry also has that kind of energy but everyone only remembers his six wives and the uncountable number of bloodshed (not to mention Catherine of Aragon is a much better fighter than himāgot this from Horrible Histories OwO)... Anyways, Louis XVI is basically a Zeus.
2. Hera - Catherine of Aragon
This brings to Catherine of Aragon herself. Sheās a total Q U E E N and if you have watched āSixā the musical you already got what I mean (like, being the wife who married to Henry the longest). Thereās also the early warlike aspect in Hera (featured in Homerās works) that Catherine has it as well (at least you know that sheās getting more victories than Henry if you have watched Horrible Histories season 6, in the episode with Rowan Atkinson playing Henry VIII (which is sad because I want Ben Willbond to play himāhe iconic to the HH fandom)), making her a great casting of Hera.
Hera, in my opinion, is a very strong woman who has to take Zeusās shit and I could totally understand why she took revenge on the girls that Zeus has slept withābut anyways, hopefully you guys would like it :3
3. Aphrodite - Pauline Bonaparte
This is half-self-explanatory, reallyājust look at that statue she posed as Venus, the Roman equivalent of Aphrodite.
Pauline was famed for her beauty in her time, also a big chunk of scandals from her affairs (which bugs her big brother Napoleon, a lot). Nevertheless, despite her big spending habits and a great sexual appetite, she always helped Napoleon in some surprising ways (like she sold her house in Paris to the Duke of Wellington to get the funds for Napoleon).
Just like Aphrodite herself, Pauline harnessed her beauty very well. Thus, I rest my case.
4. Apollo - Joachim Murat or Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria
(Warning: long content ahead)
Firstly, let me briefly introduce them because you guys might not know them much.
Joachim Murat was a marshal of France, also one of Napoleonās brother-in-law, grand duke of Berg and Cleves from 1806 to 1808 and the King of Naples from 1808 to 1815. After the wars, he attempted to escape yet was caught and executed in 1815 in Pizzo, Italy (if you have read of Alexandre Dumasās āFamous Crimesā you might know himāby the way no one has cut his head off and sent it to that big nose King Ferdinand).
For those who have watched āElisabethā or the āSissiā movies, you might know Franz Joseph I of Austria already but you might not know much about himself besides being the husband of the (in)famous Empress Sisi (ie. Empress Elisabeth of Austria). He was the Emperor of the Austria from 1848 to his death in 1916āone of the longest reigning European monarchs in history. During his reign, the empire had been through a lot of change, most notably, the creation of Austria-Hungary. Nevertheless, he was also the Emperor who started World War I and he died of old age in the midst of the Great War.
For Apollo, Iām not casting musicians because this is quite overdone. I rather want to shed a light to the other arts that he represented in Greco-Roman mythology. This makes me want to draw a parallel to Joachim Murat as he was also a great sucker of classical literature. Plus, he also was known to be a flamboyant dresser (his nickname was āthe Dandy Kingā by the way), also the designer of the uniforms of the Neapolitan army (with an excessive amount of amaranth, perhaps his favourite colour). Really, everyone just sees him as a great flamboyant himbo but in reality, heās iconically badass in the battlefield as the First Horseman of Europe. Well, also heās known for being extremely good with women even though his wife Caroline was fierce as hell. So, in my opinion, he fits the image of Apollo that we know.
However, you guys might feel surprised why I picked Franz Joseph for Apollo. Well, he really... was a rather mediocre ruler in my opinion, and perhaps our most memorable image of him was the senile emperor who signed the declaration of war to Serbia. Nevertheless, he was a well-liked man among his subjects, at least to some old citizens of Austria-Hungary telling future generations. Besides, culture flourished in Vienna under his reignāwith notable figures like Sigmund Freud, Ludwig Wittgenstein and Erwin Schrƶdinger. Despite the series of unfortunate events which made the empire started to crumble, Austria-Hungary arguably has its cultural importance in Europe. Sounds like what Apollo would do if heās a ruler, somehow.
Well, enough of his political achievements, letās talk about his private life... which was probably the actual reason why I picked him.
Enter Duchess Elisabeth in Bavaria, the Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary, also known as Sisi.
On a side note, Marshal Louis-Alexandre Berthier of France, Prince of NeufchĆ¢tel and of Wargram, was Empress Sisiās grand-uncle in-law via his marriage to Duchess Maria Elisabeth in Bavaria
Absolutely love Pia as Elisabeth in the musical so please donāt mind me using a gif from this :3ļæ¼ ((also, āElisabethā spoiler alert
Franz originally was to marry her sister Helene (nicknamed NĆ©nĆ©), nevertheless, on the first meeting in Bad Ishl, he has fallen for the young Elisabeth, head over heelsāmaking him defying his domineering mother, Archduchess Sophie, for the very first time. Elisabeth also liked him and ļæ¼did not expressed her refusal either, so they got married in St. Augustineās Church in 29th April, 1854.
However, the marriage was not well. Sisi was not accustomed to the strict Austrian court especially Archduchess Sophie (also she was not really a fan of intimacy). Poor Franz was rather helpless in situations between his mother and his wife, and eventually, Sisi chose her freedom over her duty as Empress, traveling around the world. They two briefly went back together during the Austro-Hungarian compromise, yet she was constantly not there. Eventually, Sisi was assassinated by an anarchist named Luigi Lucheni during her stay in Geneva, Switzerland, and Franz was devastated over her death (āshe will never know how much I love herā).
To Franz, he loved her so, but he really didnāt understand her needs. Even though he had countless mistresses and female companions in Vienna, he still missed his wife. I say, he was really unlucky when it comes to love. Like Apollo himself, he dated countless nymphs and humans, but a lot of his notable relationships did not have a good end. (Probably Cyrene was the most lucky one, yet she also has chosen to be left alone after mothering several children with Apollo.) For this, I picked Franz Joseph as Apollo.
5. Ares - Jean Lannes or Michel Ney
As usual, for those who donāt know much history, I shall briefly introduce my babeys these two great soldiers.
Jean Lannes was one of the marshals of Napoleon, known for being one of Napoleonās closest friends and his fiery personality, and is considered one of the best marshals of the 1st French Empire. His finest moments including the Battle of Ratisbon in which he led his men to storm the well-guarded city with ladders (hence his nickname āladder lordā in our very humble Napoleonic marshalate fandom :3). Sadly, he died of the wound he received in the battle of Aspern-Essling in 1809.
Michel Ney was also one of the marshals of Napoleon, known for his extreme valour (yep, he is known as the āBravest of the Braveā). As you might know, he was one of the marshals who was in Waterloo, yet, his finest hour was during the retreat from Russia in the disasterous 1812. Sadly, he was arguably the most prominent victim of the White Terror under the second Bourbon restoration, executed in 1815 (**I am not accepting any kind of conspiracy theories of my babey survived and died in Americaš¤).
Speaking of Ares, I have a lot of things to say (thatās my dad ;-; no jkjk). He is really not that bloodthirsty idiot who casually hates humans. Well, heās more like a fiery dork and a man who was very faithful to his lovers, and fights very well (by the way also one of the best dads). So, the bois that come into my mind are automatically two of the most courageous marshals of France.
Lannes, if I have to get him a godly parent, it would definitely Ares. He resembled the god a lot (also I sometimes imagined Ares as a smol bean with dark hair), probably looks the most like Ares himself. He got that fiery temper, that faithfulness to his wife Louise, also being a very courageous fighter in the fieldāwell he literally was like, āNO LEMME STORM DAT CITY *grabs ladder*ā.
There you have it, my big bro our ladder lord Jean Lannes who can pull off a perfect Ares.
Ney is like a slightly introverted (and mature) version of an Ares person. You can guess his temper already through his famed auburn hair, and indeed despite his shy exterior his temper sometimes was a bit explosive, and a bit impatient (which was somehow one of his fatal flaws). He was a great fighter, known as a skilled swordsman in his youth. And you all know how brave he is in his famed epithet. Michel Ney is purely badass (and C U T E) you know (and he needs a lot of hugs because he has really been though a lot in the wars, and was a possible case of PTSD which was shown in his arguably suicidal behaviour during the battle of Waterloo). Thatās why I casted him as the Greek god Ares OwO
//
And there you have it, my interpretations on the Greek gods via people in history. I originally would like to include more but somehow I realised that I have written too much about my picks. So, if you want to add more, reblog this post or tag me on the post you made on this topic (and please use the hashtag āmythical figures as historical peopleā so that I could look into your choices via the search bubble on this appš„ŗ).
Last but not the least, I hope you all lovelies like this, also have learnt something new via my brief introductions on some historical people. Have a great day!

THE PEACH YOU HAD TO PICK | CHAPTER 28
The twenty-eighth chapter of my Chris Evans / Original Female Character fic. Please reblog if you enjoy reading it, give feedback, or even suggestions and prompts!
Ell wakes up to some unwanted publicity.
The first part of this fic is written as a tabloid news article. The rest is pretty much pure fluff!Ā Content warning for pet names, hint at past abusive relationship.
āEll Rose celebrates with friends as new single hits #1 and rumours circulate about her dating lifeā
It seems that British singer, actor and model Ell Rose, 27, is firmly settling in to LA life as she celebrated her newest success with her band and her assistant Tom.
She was pictured leaving Thai restaurant Chao Krung in West Hollywood last night, a few hours after she was told that her new single āSomeone Like Youā had reached the #1 spot all over the UK, US, Europe and Asia.
Dressed in a preppy baby blue checked co-ord set with a white turtleneck, Ell suited the smart casual look while still oozing sexiness.
āSomeone Like Youā is Ell Roseās first new release in nearly three years, and her first since rumours began circulating about her break-up with her long-term partner and fellow musician and model Jamie Allen. The reason for the coupleās break-up has never quite been officially confirmed, but the pair have both been spotted on the arms of more than a few men and women over the past couple of years.
An insider said of Ell back in 2010: āSheās just enjoying herself, experimenting and dating around.ā
But it seemed that it was more than just āenjoying herselfā. Ell was frequently spotted in bars alongside known cocaine dealers, and several sources reported seeing the bisexual star leave the houses of many men and women around London.
Despite going off the rails, Ell remained tight lipped about the break-up, never once commenting on or mentioning Jamie when questioned. She worked hard to get her life back on track, and has seemingly relocated out of London to her $2million house in Los Angeles with her beloved dog Miffy in recent months.
An appearance on āThe Late Late Showā saw Ell step back into the limelight after a break, on which she debuted her latest single. The show, hosted by her longtime friend James Corden, saw āCaptain Americaā actor Chris Evans, 30, chivalrously switch seats with her after US comedian Chuck Peterson, 67, made Ell visibly uncomfortable, in a moment which sparked more than a few comments about the comicās behaviour to other women in the entertainment industry. It is thought that Ell was also spotted in a restaurant with Evans and three of his āThe Avengersā co-stars - Robert Downey Jr, Scarlett Johansson and Chris Hemsworth - which led to questions about a potential upcoming role in an MCU film for Ell, but the sighting and any rumours remain unconfirmed.
Rumours were sparked about the relationship between Ell and Jamie once again during Ellās headline show at LAās Roxy Ballroom, when she made a few comments before performing new single āSomeone Like Youā to the sold out venue. Video footage confirms that Ell talked about how she realised she needed āsomeone so much betterā than the songās inspiration, and, although it has never directly been confirmed that the song was written about Jamie, fans have speculated about it ever since its release.
Ell also encouraged anyone in the crowd who āfeels unhappy, or unsafe, in a relationship, or a workplace, or anythingā to āget out before it gets worseā, sparking even more curiosity to the nature of the relationship breakdown.
Since the breakup, Ell has been linked to a harem of celebrities, including Idris Elba, Julian Casablancas, Alex Turner, Jack O'Connell, Skepta, Carl Barat, Janelle Monae, Daisy Lowe, Kristen Stewart, and many, many more.
It is not known whether Ell is currently dating anyone, however a recent Instagram post of a picture of two plates of pancakes have suggested to some that there may be someone new in her life. Ellās social media followers have been quick to try and pair her up with a number of people, including a suggestion of a potential reunion with Jamie Allen.
Daily Mail have reached out to Ell Roseās team, who were unavailable for comment.
āOh my God,ā Ell sighed as she threw her phone down the bed.
It landed with a harder thud than she had intended, however, as it caused Chris to wake from his deep slumber. Ell had woken early, and Chris had been snoring away softly next to her for the past hour, his face buried deep into the pillow and his leg hanging out from over the side of the bed.

Bit late and random but it's the anon you leave food out for here to give away I am also bi and I think exactly the same as you about bi val pretty much, every time Derek offers me representation my reaction is to slowly, hesitantly take it and say "thaaaaaaaaanks..." while rolling my eyes, in much the same way one accepts their least favourite flavour of sweet from an annoyingly enthusiastic uncle-type-individual. Ironically I feel I had more in common with her before the bi shit started up.
What I find really amusing is that Landy actually did reasonably well at representation when (and only when) he wasnāt trying.Ā
Oh god, this got long, anon, my ass rambled.
tldr; I'm glad actual bi people dislike bi val (or how Laundry handled bi val) as much as me, this will probably offend at least one person but i don't really care, Dirty Laundry wrote better rep when he didn't mean to write rep at all, and if he ever starts trying to "represent" groups I'm part of I'll take him out back like a dying horse and shoot him.
Like, yes. He had stupid and potentially offensive shit - I say potentially because what offends one member of a group wonāt necessarily offend all of them. His attitude to mentally ill people is, frankly, disgusting. Weāve hadĀ āSkulduggery canāt be abused, he doesnāt have feelingsā. Weāve hadĀ āeVeRyOnE iS bI eVeNtUaLlYā. We had Ping, who seemed to be pretty much universally offensive.Ā And that's what's always going to happen when a straight, cis, white, wealthy, male author tries to write marginalised groups he doesn't know shit about, because inevitably he's going to fall back on stereotypes.
But we also had:
SEXUALITY REP: Phase One's nonstraight characters were treated like the straight ones, and like, isn't that the whole point? There was no need for a massive Coming Out Story TM to grab for those sweet sweet Woke Points, because sexuality isn't supposed to be important to mages. I never understood why Val needed that whole Coming Out Panic storyline. Like...Des and Melissa are ridiculously supportive, encouraging, loving parents. They accepted you dating a ~19 year old when you were ~16. They accepted you revealing you could do fucking magic and that you'd been lying to them for like seven years. They took your undead buddy in stride and the most pressing question your dad had was whether magic toilets exist. There is zero reason to think that "I'm bisexual" is gonna be the thing that makes them flip and throw you into the streets in disgrace, Valkyrie. Come on.
Tanith had girlfriends and it was just mentioned casually, because it's normal.
China had massive UST with Eliza. That was an opportunity right there to not only include a f/f relationship, but also to bring back one of the few precious surviving characters from Phase One, using characters and a relationship that already had several books' worth of setup and tension and interest from fans.
The Monster Hunters have a casual conversation about which one of the Dead Men they'd date.
Ghastly has a conversation with Fletcher about the pain he's been through being in love. He never uses any pronouns.
It was confirmed at one point re: the Dead Men that at this point, after 300-odd years, everyone's been with everyone else at some point.
Thrasher is gay, and while Scapegrace's...everything...is treated as a joke/comedic relief, Thrasher's love for him isn't. He's completely devoted to Scapegrace, and that in itself is not played for laughs, even though the rest of the scene usually is. Thrasher's description of their first meeting is essentially a love-at-first-sight situation for him.
"ABNORMAL" RELATIONSHIP REP: Age gap relationships are normal for mages. Off the top of my head, using only canon, canon-implied or almost-canon ships:
Ghastly/Tanith (~350 year age difference)
Tanith/Sanguine (~250+ year age difference)
Tanith/Saracen (~350 year age difference)
Caisson/Solace (~250 year age difference)
China/Gordon (~400 year age difference)
Kierre/Temper (~500+ year age difference)
If you include fan ships, there's also things like Mevolent/Serpine or my Mevolent/Vile, which are both ~600 year minimum age gaps based on the timeline, or Valdug (and its variations) which is ~400 years.
Now, whether you consider this kind of rep positive or negative is up to you, but itās there.
MENTAL ILLNESS REP: more like "Which characters in this series don't have a mental illness or a personality disorder?" I have some of these issues, but not all of them, so this is just how I read it, but:
ADHD: Skulduggery
Dissociative Identity Disorder: Skulduggery & Vile
Dissociation: Skulduggery again, most notably in DD and DB
Schizophrenia (or similar): Valkyrie & Darquesse, Valkyrie "seeing" Darquesse's ghost thing in Phase Two
Impostor Syndrome: Reflectionie
Autism: Clarabelle
Trauma/PTSD/CPTSD: Skulduggery, Valkyrie, China, Ghastly, Erskine...pretty much everyone has a believable, understandable, morally grey trauma response in this series. People struggling with trauma are spoilt for choice of characters to see themselves in.
TRAUMA REP: This series is a trauma conga line, but everyone has a believable, understandable, morally grey trauma response in this series. I see little bits of myself in more than one Phase One character.
Childhood Abuse (of varying degrees & types): Skulduggery, Carol & Crystal, Omen, Fletcher, Ghastly, China, Bliss, Sanguine...
Estranged Family: Skulduggery abandoning his crest, Fergus & Gordon, China & Bliss
Bad Romantic Relationship: Skulduggery is also very clearly an abuse victim. Heās got a solid history of romantic attachments to women who manipulate, use and gaslight him for their own agendas. Ā There's a whole paragraph in SPX about how Abyssinia broke him down, isolated him from his friends and preyed on his desperate need to be loved, all classic abuse tactics.
And Iām personally a huge fan of this backstory for two reasons:
1) Society likes a plucky victim in media. The "My suffering made me stronger" type of victim. And it's not always like that in real life. Not all survivors come out of their abuse stronger or kinder or more understanding. Some of us come out cold and fucked up. Some of us end up as emotionally stunted, bloodied-nails-and-bared-teeth survivors, broken in ways that can't be fixed and sustained by enough rage to power a small sun. But society doesn't like to tell the story of that kind of survivor, because we're not usually a likeable protagonist. When we're shown in media, we're usually the sympathetic villain, or maybe the antihero. But Skug is someone who's done awful things and lost pretty much all his faith in humanity and been burned more times than he can count, and he still makes the conscious choice to try and be the good guy when he could so easily go Evil Supervillain on the world, and I don't know about any of y'all, but I've modelled myself on him in that. I've made the choice to do something good when all I really want to do is just become a horrible, shrivelled ball of nastiness and revenge. And that's because I saw him do it and realised that I could do that too.
Skug is an incredibly capable, strong, masculine Man's Man. He gets in fights all the time, and he usually wins. He's military, an industry that's Really Bad for stigmatizing weakness and mental illness, and he's right up at the top of the hierarchy. Almost everyone is afraid of him. He's a straight up cold-blooded killer. Skulduggery Pleasant is precisely the type of person who's not normally portrayed as a victim of anything. Nothing about him screams "victim" at all. But his abuse history is insidious. He's so conditioned to respond in a certain way to abuse from the women in his life, probably from a very young age, that despite all that strength and capability and stubbornness and ego, he just goes along with it. And it's an established pattern going back hundreds of years. He keeps going back to China, even though he knows she's bad for him and his friends keep telling him to stay away from her. Abyssinia latched onto him when he was traumatized and vulnerable and weaponized it against him to make him easier to control - and when she reappears, hundreds of years later, she jumps straight back into using, tmanipulating and gaslighting him and not only does he let her, he doesn't even seem to realise that behaviour is abusive. He thinks it's normal! That's how he's always been treated by his long-term girlfriends, with the notable exception of Wifey. Even when Val is being fucking nasty to him in the first couple books of Phase Two, sniping and lying and blaming him for everything under the sun, he just takes it. There's no attempt to tell her she's being unreasonable, no telling her to fuck right off and give her head a wobble, no defending himself even when she's bitching over something that isn't even his doing. And this is a man who has an absolutely gleaming steel spine the rest of the time; Skug has no problem saying no to anybody else, but he can't get past the way he's been taught to treat the important ladies in his life. Skug is a walking reminder that anyone can be a victim of abuse, even the ones who seem least likely to be susceptible.
GENDER REP: This one is the most iffy out of the bunch and definitely was not done very well in the eyes of the people who matter most, but I'll include it anyway because it mattered to some.
So there's Nye, who's...agender? Genderless? And uses "it" pronouns? Nye was generally considered horrible rep because it's also a war criminal and experiments on people and I've seen people say "Well I don't want to be seen like that" but? It's still possible to be a war criminal and also genderless. I never saw the two things as being related or relevant to each other.
There's also Mantis, who's in exactly the same gender/pronouns boat as Nye and always seems to be forgotten about, which sucks because Mantis is a war hero. It fought for the Sanctuary during the War and they never lost a battle when it was in command. It's called out of retirement to fight for the Supreme Council in LSODM, ends up fighting alongside Skulduggery during the Battle of Roarhaven, and ultimately dies attempting a very brave, very risky strategy. Mantis is, unreservedly, one of the good guys. It was also my introduction to sentient beings using "it" pronouns, and did it in a way that felt natural, so when I met my first person online who used "it" pronouns and hated to be referred to as he/she, it was...weird, but not as weird as it would otherwise have been, because I was like, "Oh yeah, like the Crenga. Okay."
And then there's the Scapegrace sex change plotline, which...I might have an unpopular opinion on this one. From what Iāve seen, trans people donāt seem to think was handled well or with any sensitivity at all. Iām not trans, so if the trans community says he was being offensive to them, Iām not going to claim otherwise. But...I first read the Scapegrace plotline as a young teenager in a tiny rural school with zero diversity, going through a period of being deeply confused about my own gender identity. He was more or less my first introduction to the idea that genitals =/= gender. I was relieved, at that point in my life, to read someone having a lot of the same thoughts I was having about being in the wrong body. So while it may have been badly done and yeah, the series would probably have been better without it, it did make at least one kid suspecting she might not be cis goĀ āHuh! So there areĀ other people who feel like this.ā
Thrasher is also implied to be legitimately trans/gender-questioning, and that's not played for laughs either.
So? Phase One, while it absolutely had faults and issues and things that were just "Oh god why", was actually full of rep, at least compared to the other series that I read as a child/teen. But? As soon as Dirty Laundry started trying to be woke? He fucking sucks ass at it. Aside from confirming Phase One's hints that Skug has a background of abusive relationships, every single attempt at shoehorning rep into Phase Two is Bad.
The painfully OOC, forced, badly-written awkwardness of Val suddenly being rabidly horny for women out of fucking nowhere. The stilted, forced cringiness between her and any of the women she's flirted with - contrast that with Sorrowscorn's interactions, full of natural chemistry that had us all like š I mean, I never shipped Val/Melancholia, but I could always see why people did - they had miles more chemistry than Val/anyone in Phase Two.
The fucking mess that is v*litsa, because if someone says "I'm really not interested in friendships/relationships right now", clearly the route to true love is to bulldoze their boundaries and forcibly insert yourself into their life and proceed to treat them like a delicate soft uwu flower, completely ignoring the horrible things they've done, while gleefully damning their best friend as an irredeemable monster for the exact same things, which is. You know. Gonna affect your so-called love's self-confidence and self-esteem because she knows she's no different to him. Y'all know I love an angsty ship, an unhealthy ship, a ship with fucked power dynamics, but I literally cannot roll my eyes any further back in my head at this shit. I never read Demon Road, but from what I've heard from friends who did, it does seem like every time Laundry tries to write an f/f ship, he comes up with a cringey abusive/manipulative caricature and tries to call it rep, and he needs to Stop.
Val's Mental IllnessTM arc. It's funny how he wrote Skulduggery as a wonderfully complex character with deep-rooted psychological damage and long-lasting trauma, but believes he wrote a character with "no feelings" - but when he tries to delve into the damage the world of magic has done to Val, he turned her into a weak, whiny drug addict who treats everyone around her like garbage and is so selfish and dislikeable that I? Honestly can't even reconcile Phase Two val with Phase One val. They're two completely different people. He's shown on Twitter that he doesn't have any respect for mentally ill people, and it shows. Other mentally ill people might see it differently, but the whole thing just makes me go "yikes".
Never, who has no personality outside of being genderfluid, and whose pronouns make no sense. I'm sorry, I have never met an nb person who insists that you change from male to female pronouns multiple times in a sentence, every time you refer to them. It's confusing as fuck. Now I have been told that Never has apparently received some character development in the last couple books, and if so, fair play, but I quit reading after Midnight, and Never and the rest of the personality-less new characters introduced in Phase Two who just seemed to be 2D Stereotypes to snag Woke Points were a big part of why, so. Development too late, I'm afraid.
(Now, if anyone is looking for a well-written genderfluid character, I recommend the Tawny Man trilogy by Robin Hobb. I have a lot of issues with her as a writer, and unfortunately I hate her POV character which puts me off the series as a whole, but she wrote the Fool/Amber/Lord Golden and their gender identity/approach to sexuality with so much more respect and realism. That is the kind of rep nb people should be getting: 3D, complex, realistic characters whose gender is only a tiny fragment of their personality, not the be-all-and-end-all of their existence. You know. Like cis people get. Nobody wants to be represented by a 2D cardboard cutout stereotype.)
Anyway idk how much sense this makes it just really amuses me that Laundry would include all this rep completely unintentionally and then go on Twitter and remind us all that actually he's a massive asshole via insensitive/offensive tweets about the groups he'd actually done a fair job of including (i.e. Skulduggery has no feelings, mentally ill people should find another series to read, the bullshit about Val being "heteromantic bisexual" on Twitter and then spouting all the "the woman she loved uwu" shit in the books (proving he has no idea what he's talking about), eVeRyOnE iS bI eVeNtUaLlY. He can only write half-decent rep when he's not trying and he inevitably outs himself as having a really shitty attitude towards those people anyway, proving that ultimately it's all either unintentional rep or performative wokeness.

Hands On Me - Chapter 1
Pairing: Reader / Jungkook
Genre:Ā College!au, fluff, mild angst, smutĀ
Length:Ā 4,341kĀ words
Warnings:Ā language, sexual themesĀ
Summary:Ā Youād never had much luck with relationships, and experience had taught you to shy away from physical intimacy. But when you started dating your neighbor, Jungkook, you began to think he was worth the risk. College AU.Ā
A/N:Ā Next chapter coming soon. I originally wrote this a few months ago based on a prompt I got from my writerās group. It was supposed to be college based romance, coupleās first time together, mildly angsty, and include the dialogueĀ āDo you want to break up?ā I sort of vaguely pictured JK when I was writing the male lead, at least visually, so I thought I would post it as a reader fan fic, which Iāve never written before. I usually write Marvel fan fic at AO3 in third person (not second person) so this isnāt as natural for me. Also, this is just for funsies because I donāt do real life shipping with real life people, though I do enjoy reading some of the well written fics Iāve seen in the fandom. If people enjoy this one, I might post more as I have a lot of short story prompts Iāve written for my club and donāt do anything with.Ā
Chapter 1
Snuggled up on the sofa watching TV together was how you spent most evenings with your boyfriend, Jungkook. You did a quick clean that morning in anticipation of him coming over since he seemed to prefer being in your space, though it hardly mattered; home was just a few doors down regardless of which apartment you chose to spend time together in.
You shifted your attention from the book you were reading to Jungkookās profile, fingers itching to trace the sharp jawline that attracted so many women to the gym where he worked as a part-time trainer while he finished university. He also needed a haircut, but heād shrugged off the suggestion when you mentioned it earlier that week. The slightly longer, inky black locks suited him though.
He was focused on the basketball game that had gone into overtime, his thumb absentmindedly stroking against your hip as you leaned against him. Being close to him was a double-edged sword lately and a reminder that he hadnāt really touched you in a while. Not since that night a few weeks ago.
When you first started dating three months ago, heād been very physical with you. Dates that ended with kisses at the door had quickly turned into dates that ended with making out on the sofa at his apartment or yours. But during one very heated session on his sofa you got nervous, suddenly worried that things were moving too fast, and you pulled back. To his credit, Jungkook backed off immediately, assuring you that he was fine with following a slower pace.
Your high school boyfriend had pushed for sex and against your better judgment, youād slept with him after the senior winter formal, only to be devastated when he moved on less than a month later. Similarly, your last boyfriend had been very pushy about sex, and your reluctance was a bone of contention between you until he broke it off.
At twenty-two, Jungkook was a year older, and you knew that he was much more experienced. Youād been neighbors for almost a year now, and youād seen several of the girls he dated coming and going during that time. Youād never spoken to one another outside the occasional hello in passing until the night you came back from work to find your ex-boyfriend, Mike, drunk and pounding on your door.
Since you didnāt want to let him into your apartment, you stood outside to talk to him. Apparently offended that you wouldnāt let him in, heād begun berating you loudly enough to have a few neighbors popping their heads out to see what was going on. And in the middle of that embarrassing situation, Jungkook and his friend walked up.
āHey y/n,ā Jungkook said. āSorry weāre late.ā
He slipped an arm around your waist, startling you, though you couldnāt deny you were grateful for the interruption.
His friend chimed in, holding up a takeout bag. āWe brought dinner.ā Youād seen him around campus and remembered that his name was Jimin.
Mike had eyed Jungkook, as if sizing up a potential fight. But while he had an inch or two on Jungkook in height, Jungkook was all lean muscle and without question the stronger of the two. So, he had backed off, but not before firing off a parting shot. āGood luck with the virgin. Cold fish bitch.ā
Your cheeks were burning as he walked away.
Jimin broke the silence. āWhat an asshole. Does he do this a lot?ā
You shook your head. āThis is the first time Iāve seen him since we broke up.ā You could only assume the alcohol had made him think that you were a potential booty call. Ā
Jungkook frowned as he stepped out of your personal space. āSorry if I overstepped. I know itās not my business, but I didnāt like the way he was crowding you at the door and yelling at you.ā
āNo, I appreciate you getting rid of him,ā you answered. āThank you.ā
Jimin held up the takeout bag again. āWe really do have dinner. Do you want to join us? Maybe itās better if youāre not here alone in case he decides to come back.ā
You hesitated, but then your stomach growled, a reminder that you hadnāt eaten since breakfast because of a hectic day of classes followed by work at the campus library.
Jungkook smiled. āWeāll take that as a yes.ā
You became friends with Jungkook after that night. It was amazing how quickly youād felt comfortable around him. He was kind and friendly, and he frequently helped the elderly residents of your building. Then one night after heād shown up at the campus library and walked you the few blocks home, he kissed you. It marked the beginning of your new relationship, and youād been inseparable ever since.
Unlike the few other guys you had dated, Jungkook had never directly brought up the topic of sex, nor had he pushed for it. Youād had a brief conversation one night about your respective exes. You knew heād had one serious relationship that ended when he moved away for college and the long-distance relationship proved to be too much of a strain. Heād only dated casually since then, though youād seen some of his overnight guests leaving his apartment the morning after.
Jungkook knew youād had a boyfriend in high school, but you hadnāt gone into the details of the breakup. Though it was several years in the past, that rejection still stung, and you didnāt like to talk about it. Heād never asked about Mike other than to ensure you werenāt being harassed. You supposed the drunken scene he and Jimin had witnessed was explanation enough.
You were so lost in your thoughts that you failed to notice the game had ended until Jungkook spoke. āYouāve been doing that a lot lately.ā
You looked up to see him watching you, an unreadable expression on his face. āDoing what?ā
āCompletely zoning out,ā he replied with a half-smile. āIs something bothering you?ā His chocolate brown eyes studied you intently.
āNo,ā you said quickly. Maybe too quickly because you could tell he didnāt quite believe you. His tongue pushed against his cheek, something he did when he was thinking about how to deal with a problem.
After a moment, he nodded. āOkay.ā He stood up and stretched. āI should get going. I have an early client tomorrow.ā
Saturdays were always busy at his gym, and he sometimes worked longer hours on the weekends. āDo you have clients tomorrow night?ā
āOne,ā he confirmed as he pulled on his leather jacket. āJenās birthday party is tomorrow, right?ā
You nodded as you walked to the door with him. āWeāll be at Carmenās.ā Jen had been planning her birthday for months and wanted a venue with good food, music and dancing. The trendy bar had only been open for about a year, but it was popular for the menu, which included themed cocktails, and the Latin music. Youād been looking at salsa dancing tutorials on YouTube because you were sure that your best friend would insist on hitting the dance floor.
āOkay. Jimin and I will swing by around ten.ā
Jimin and Jen were involved in a casual flirtation that they both enjoyed, though you werenāt so sure it was really going anywhere. Jimin was a handsome transfer student studying modern dance, which took up a lot of his time, much to the disappointment of the single girls on campus. And for the two years youād been friends, you had never known Jen to date anyone seriously. Still, Jen had heavily hinted that she wanted Jimin to come to her birthday party, and so you had told Jungkook to bring him.
āOkay.ā You tilted your head back as he leaned down to kiss you goodbye.
You loved kissing him ā the way his hands settled on your hips, and the way the first gentle brush of his lips against yours always gave way to slow, deep kisses. Your hands drifted down his chest to his waist, clutching the material of his t-shirt to ground yourself.
It would be so easy to get swept away. By the heat that flared between you. By your feelings. You knew without a doubt that you had fallen hard for him.
Jungkook pulled back, kissing the top of your head before releasing you. āIāll see you tomorrow.ā
You closed the door behind him and locked up, leaning your head against it for a moment. You were beginning to regret letting him leave every night even if you werenāt sure if you were ready for more. You wanted more, but you were afraid of it too. And you had no idea what to do about it.
_________________________________________
Ā You nibbled your bottom lip as you sat on Jenās bed, watching your friend dig through her closet. āDo you think I shouldā¦ā you paused, wondering how to broach this topic. While Jen had few conversational barriers, you were more hesitant to talk about sex.
āShould what?ā Jen asked, her tone distracted as she pulled out another dress and tossed it over the chair at her desk. She tapped her well-manicured nails against the wall as she studied the contents of her closet before pulling out another dress and dropping it on the chair.
You glanced at the pile of dresses accumulating on the chair. āI thought you were going to wear that new dress you bought last week?ā
āThis isnāt for me,ā Jen stated. āThis is for you.ā
You failed to contain a snort of laughter. āYouāre like six inches taller than me. And I have a dress.ā It wasnāt new, and Jen had complained that the dark color washed you out the last time you wore it. But unlike Jen, whose wealthy parents supplied her with credit cards and charge accounts around the city, you couldnāt afford to waste money on clothes. Your parents helped when they could, but you also had three younger siblings still at home and college was only possible because of your scholarships. Living in the city was also expensive; if not for Jungkook contributing to your groceries since you often ate together, youād probably be eating ramen five nights a week.
āAnd Iām a fashion design student, so I have time to alter one of these. If I have to see you in that funeral dress again, Iām going to burn it. Worse, do you really want Jungkook to see you in it?ā she shuddered as she tossed another dress on the chair. āOkay, I think these are the best options. Now, what were you asking? Do I think you should what?ā
You hadnāt considered that Jungkook might also hate that dress. Maybe it wouldnāt hurt to see what Jen had in mind. Arguing with her was next to impossible anyway.
You helped Jen hang the dresses on a clothes rack in the corner so you could see them better. āDo you think I should sleep with Jungkook?ā
Jen raised a brow as she glanced over at you. āHell yes. Have you talked about it?ā
You shook your head. āNo. I kind ofā¦ I donāt know. Freaked out a little bit a few weeks ago when we were kissing and stuff. It seemed like we were headed there, and I wasnāt sure I was ready, and I know I totally pulled a one eighty on him. And now he barely touches me.ā
āHuh.ā Jen considered that for a minute. āSo things are weird now? Are you afraid heās going to break up with you or something?ā
You hadnāt really thought about that. āI wasnāt, but now that you said it, maybe.ā You had mostly been worried that if you broke up after sleeping together, heād be that much harder to get over because you knew that youād be more attached to him then than you already were. But maybe that worry ā that he would leave because you were holding back ā had been there all along.
āIām not saying he would do that,ā Jen hurried to add. āIāve seen how he acts around you, and how he looks at you. I really think heās one of the good ones. But with your past experiences, I can see why youād be worried. Has he ever been pushy about it?ā
āNo, never. When I told him that I thought we were moving too fast, he said heād follow my pace. Only now, weāve just kind of stalled out.ā
āI guess heās waiting for you to do something then. Like give him a signal that you want more.ā
That could be it too. āI donāt really know how,ā you admitted. āI have one nightās experience to draw from, and that was years ago.ā
āThat wasnāt an experience, y/n, that was a sexual travesty.ā
You couldnāt argue with that. āHeās experienced though. Iām sure he knows how to make it good for me, but I donāt know how to do that for him. What if Iām bad in bed?ā
āFirst of all, you have no idea how you are in bed because youāre practically still a virgin. Second, men are easier to please when it comes to sex anyway. Jungkook likes you. Itās easy to tell that he has real feelings for you, so I think thereās zero chance that he wouldnāt like sex with you. You really need to talk to him about it.ā
You felt your cheeks heat up just thinking about trying to talk to him about this. āI know. Iām just embarrassed.ā
Jen rolled her eyes. āIf you canāt talk about it, you probably shouldnāt be doing it. Or I guess you could take the easier route and wear something that does the seduction for you. Like this.ā She held up a deep red halter neck dress. The low neckline and back ensured maximum skin exposure. Jen was tall and had long, dark hair so on her, it probably looked fabulous.
Eyeing the dress with skepticism, you said, āThat dress is your style, not mine. Iāve never worn anything like that before.ā Your style could best be described as casual. On date night, you managed flirty casual, and Jungkook didnāt seem to have any complaints. This dress was on a whole other level, though.
āWe can make it your style. Iāll make sure itās not too revealing if thatās what youāre worried about.ā When you still hesitated, Jen added, āCome on, Jungkook will forget how to talk when he sees you in this. I guarantee that you wonāt have any trouble getting him into bed if thatās what you decide you want.ā
The idea of surprising Jungkook with something like this was appealing. Maybe shaking up your image for one night would give you the confidence to talk to him about your relationship.
_____________________________________
Ā Jungkook stifled a yawn as he entered Carmenās. It had been an exceptionally long day, and he wished this was a regular Saturday night like the ones he usually spent with his girlfriend, y/n. He liked being in your apartment because your sofa was comfortable, you had an old record player and some killer albums that youād collected since middle school, and your essential oil candles made everything smell nice.
Jimin had been teasing him for a couple of months now, calling him domesticated. He supposed he was because before meeting you, he rarely spent a Saturday night in. If someone had told him then that heād soon trade beers at his favorite bar for candles and snuggling on the sofa, he would have laughed.
And since Jimin rarely got him out on a weekend anymore, and Jen had equal complaints about you, he doubted either of you would get away with ducking out early.
āAre they upstairs or downstairs?ā Jimin asked.
āDownstairs, I think,ā he replied.
He let Jimin lead the way. It was crowded downstairs, and he first searched the booths and bar area, expecting to find you chatting with friends. You always said dancing in public made you feel awkward unless you were drunk, and since your alcohol tolerance was low, you usually didnāt drink much.
āI see Jen on the dance floor,ā Jimin said. āDid you find her?ā
āNo.ā Jungkook scanned the dance floor, briefly pausing on a petite girl wearing a red dress before looking back at the booths. āMaybe sheās in the bathroom.ā He pulled out his phone to call you. Ā
āWait, is that y/n?ā Jimin suddenly asked. Ā
Jungkook glanced up from his phone. āWhere?ā
āThat girl in the red dress.ā
He looked back at the dance floor for the girl in red, ready to deny it. Except sheād turned around now, and Jimin was right. Holy shit.
āDamn. I know Iāve been giving you a hard time lately, calling you domesticated. Iāll shut up now because if I knew I was taking her home later, Iād be domesticated too.ā
Jungkook glared at Jimin. āWhatever youāre thinking, stop.ā
Jiminās expression was sheepish. āSorry, man. Iām going to hell for impure thoughts, but so are half the guys hanging around her. You might want to worry more about them.ā
Jungkook was already on the move as heād noticed the same thing. Shouldering past two guys trying to dance up behind you, he gave them a look that ensured they backed off. Your back was facing him, and he swallowed hard as his eyes drifted down from your shoulders. The dress draped in the small of your back, leaving a bare expanse of skin, and his fingers literally itched to touch you.
He gave in to the urge, sliding his hand along your waist lightly to get your attention. You turned your head, brows furrowed as you flinched away from the unexpected touch. But when you saw it was him, you smiled and wrapped your arms around his waist.
āYouāre here,ā you said, tilting your head back to look at him. āIāve been waiting forever.ā
He smiled at your uncharacteristically dramatic tone. āSorry. I forgot my bag, so I had to run home to change. Are you having fun?ā You were pressed close against him on the crowded dance floor, and he was enjoying the feeling of your small body against his. He let his hands settle on your hips, thumbs rubbing light circles. You shivered in response. āAre you cold?ā
āNo. That just feels good,ā you said with a sigh. You toyed with the top button of his long-sleeved white Henley.
He wasnāt used to you being that direct about what you liked. And when your hands suddenly wandered under his leather jacket and ran up his back, he suppressed a shiver of his own. āI think youāre drunk, baby.ā He pulled you closer, trying to ignore the teasing glimpse of cleavage revealed by your dress. Your hair drifted around your pale shoulders in loose waves, and all he could think about was running his fingers through it as he kissed you. Ā
āMaybe a little bit,ā you admitted, scrunching your nose as you smiled up at him. āThe cocktails are really good here.ā
God, you were adorable. Heād never met another girl that he wanted to simultaneously fuck senseless but also protect and cuddle, though the former urge was winning out tonight. Heād never imagined you wearing a dress like this, and he knew it would be fueling his fantasies for quite some time. It had to be Jenās influence, though he certainly wasnāt complaining.
As if reading his thoughts, Jen suddenly sidled past him on her way to the bar. āYouāre welcome.ā
For the next three hours, you divided your time between the dance floor and the bar, and Jungkook was content to follow behind you. You danced slowly together regardless of the beat, and he finally allowed his hands to stroke your bare back. You kept tilting your head back, inviting his kisses, and he was happy to indulge you. He was so turned on he could hardly think straight, but he knew he needed to keep a tight rein on the situation. The last thing he wanted was a repeat of that night a few weeks before when you had all but run from his apartment.
When you got a bit unsteady on your feet, Jungkook ordered water and fries at the bar before leading you to the booth where Jimin, Jen and a couple of other friends were talking. He could tell you were starting to fade as you finished the water and food. When you yawned and leaned against him, he kissed the top of your head. āI think itās time we got you home.ā
You hummed in agreement. Jen tossed him your jacket from the corner of the booth, and he helped you put it on. The cab ride back home was long enough for you to fall asleep in his arms. He savored every minute, stroking your hair gently, lulled by the sound of your breathing and glad that you had shaken off the pensive mood youād been in the night before.
Jungkook was observant enough to realize that something was worrying you lately. While it bothered him that you wouldnāt tell him what you were thinking about, he worried that the relationship was still too fragile for him to push when it was obvious that you didnāt want to talk about it. Still, it was becoming increasingly difficult to let it go because he was concerned that it had something to do with him.
He wondered if it was about sex. Ever since that night heād intervened when your ex showed up drunk, heād wondered about your relationship with him. Something in the past had made you nervous about physical intimacy, which heād realized after you ran out of his apartment that night, and heād been very careful not to do anything that might make you run again. More and more he wished heād punched that asshole, feeling certain he was somehow to blame. Heād deserved that and more for the name calling alone.
When you arrived home, Jungkook paid the driver and helped you from the car. Upstairs, he unlocked your apartment, smiling when you kicked your heels off and the effort sent you stumbling sideways. He steadied you before removing your jacket and draping it on the arm of the sofa. You walked to your bedroom and he grabbed some water from the kitchen before following you.
āYou donāt feel sick, do you?ā he asked, placing the water on your nightstand.
You shook your head as you sat on the edge of the bed and reached out a hand to him. āNo.ā
He took your hand and sat next to you. āYou should change before you go to sleep, so youāll be more comfortable.ā
āYou like the dress, right?ā You nibbled your bottom lip as you peeked up at him through your lashes.
Understatement. āYou look beautiful,ā Jungkook said quietly, pushing your hair off your shoulder. His breath caught when you turned her cheek toward his palm and rubbed against him like a sleepy kitten.
āThen kiss me,ā you whispered.
He hesitated, but you were already reaching for him. The kiss was like throwing a match on kindling. Then you scooted back to lie down and pulled him with you.
This was dangerous and he knew it, but he ignored the niggling little warning in his head because heād been thinking about kissing you like this all night. He pressed against your soft curves but kept most of his weight off you as slow kisses turned more passionate. And when your hands grew bolder, running across his chest and back and tugging him closer, he gave in to the temptation, pulling you more fully beneath him.
When you parted your thighs, allowing his hips to settle between them, he dropped his head to your shoulder with a groan. Pressing kisses against your neck, he willed himself to calm down. āBaby, we should stop.ā
You responded by pushing your hips up against him, and he bit back a curse. He was fully hard now and stopping was the last thing he wanted to do, but he knew it was the right thing. Jungkook braced his weight on his forearms and took a breath as he stared down at you.
āBut I want you to stay,ā you said, threading your fingers in his hair. Your eyes seemed much darker in the dim light of the bedroom. Your small hands drifted down to his shoulders, kneading, and then moved further down to toy with the hem of his shirt.
Jungkook closed his eyes and took another deep breath, the light fragrance of your perfume doing nothing to help him regain control. As much as he wanted you ā had wanted you from the first night he kissed you - he didnāt want your first time together to be after a night of drinking. If there was even the slightest chance that you might regret it later, it wasnāt worth it.
He gave in one last time, kissing the spot beneath your ear that always made you shiver. He darted his tongue out to taste you and then captured your lips for one more long, slow kiss. āNot tonight.ā
You didnāt argue anymore, allowing him to pull away. You were quiet as you got up and took some clothes from the dresser before going to the bathroom to change. When you returned, your face was clean, and you wore the usual pajama pants and t-shirt you preferred to sleep in. You didnāt say anything as you slipped past him to crawl back into bed and pull the covers up.
āYouāre sure you feel okay?ā he asked.
You nodded, your eyes already closed. āIām just tired.ā
He brushed his hand over your hair and leaned down to kiss your forehead. āIāll lock up on my way out. Iāll give you the key back tomorrow.ā
āOkay.ā
Jungkook hesitated for a moment. Something seemed off somehow. Awkward, maybe. āIāll see you tomorrow.ā
He turned off the light and let himself out, making sure to lock the door behind him.

Oh Dolokhov/HĆ©lĆØne Brainrot Weāre Really In It Now, aka Dolokhov/HĆ©lĆØne playlist annotations!
I stole several songs from a playlist my friends have and Iām not gonna put those on this list, I wonāt pretend I came up with those
The ship playlists (since they arenāt for canon couples) are very much based on my headcanons. We donāt get to see them interact literally ever so Iāve just extrapolated what I can. Several of these songs are at least alluding to sex, I donāt really think they actually slept together for various reasons I can enumerate if someone asks, but itās more about the vibes of the song.
Casual Affair - Panic! At The Disco
Itās literally in the title. Bestie how much more explanation do you need? I donāt even like this song but itās got the right energy
Those Nights - Bastille
āArenāt we all just looking for a little bit of hope these days? Looking for somebody you can wake up with?ā
Being drawn to each other because of mutual loneliness is a Thing in my interpretation of their relationship, and this hits the nail on the head.
But Itās Better If You Do - Panic! At The Disco
āPraying for love and paying in naĆÆvetĆ©ā
Again, mutual loneliness and desperation for anything resembling love. Also the āisnāt this exactly where you like meā bit fits because they wonāt admit to liking each other outside of their weird intimate moments.
Hurricane - Panic! At The Disco
āDrop our anchors in a stormā
The circumstances of their lives arent super fun at the moment so they find refuge in each other but in a very weird kind of unhealthy way! āWe are a hurricaneā sort of alludes to knowing that youāre causing problems/your relationship isnāt great.
Almost (Sweet Music) - Hozier
āIām almost me again, sheās almost youā
Itās about not really being In Love but kind of convincing yourself you are because it makes you feel better in the circumstances. I donāt think either of them were fully into their relationship for various reasons. Not as in they didnāt want the other, more that they were both too aware it would never work for long.
Hall & Oates - Satchmode
āI want to be in love again, with youā
This oneās about wanting the idea of love and companionship more than you actually like the other person, which I feel like kind of fits. This song is framed as one person in love with the other and one hesitating, but i think this works for both of them to hesitate.
Feel Something - Jaymes Young
āTouch me, someone, Iām too young to feel so numbā
The I have tried like six times and I canāt word why I think this song works. I donāt even like it, I skip it every time, but I think itās got something to do with loneliness and desperation for love driving them to look for it in places they wouldnāt normally? Who knows. Send me an ask if u do.
Another Place - Bastille
āDonāt make promises to me that youāre gonna breakā
They could never actually be together for SO many reasons and I think theyāre both pretty aware of that. They have no desire to pretend that their relationship is anything other than what it is (āwe only ever wanted one thing from thisā).
When You Were Young - The Killers
āYou sit there in your heartache, waiting on some beautiful boy to save youā
I do not think HĆ©lĆØne expected Dolokhkov to save her from anything except maybe monotony and loneliness, but this song slaps and if I can stretch the lyrics to work, I will
broken - lovelytheband
āI could be lonely with youā
Almost every song on here (including this one) is just. Weāre messed up and I know we wonāt really find love in each other but we might find solace for a while and be less lonely so uhhhhh wanna kiss me or what
Bleed Magic - I DONT KNOW HOW BUT THEY FOUND ME
āYou stand up, stand up, before I drag you downā
They are NOT good for each other! Toxic relationships uwu
Sweater Weather - The Neighbourhood
I believe in bi4bi HĆ©lĆØne/Dolokhov
Enemy Fire - Bea Miller
āSweet words from a serpentās tongueā
This song is kinda complicated and parts of it donāt fit but the energy of āeverything sucks including you but at least we can hide from the suckiness togetherā is sorta there. Originally I just added it for the soldier vibes because I was testing out songs but I realized i can fit some of the lyrics so on the playlist it goes
Angel of the Small Death and the Codeine Scene - Hozier
āHer sweetened breath and her tongue so meanā
They are horrible and cold to each other as a love language. This song is essentially just āWow my evil scary gf is so hotā and youāre right Fyodor. She is.
Shut Up and Dance - WALK THE MOON
I wonāt lie this oneās mostly a joke, I just think the vibes of telling someone to shut up as (maybe because) youāre falling in love with them is Dolokhov/HĆ©lĆØne energy. Ignore all the parts about wanting to be with her forever and her being his destiny that is not why I added it.
Lone Ranger - Rachel Platten
āIām just gonna leave, ācause baby Iām a lone rangerā
I do not think Dolokhov was intending to stay with her forever at all. Very rude of him. However, she probably also knew it wouldnāt last forever, sheās not stupid.
House of Memories - Panic! At The Disco
āPromise me a place in your house of memoriesā
This is very much post-duel, their relationship has fizzled out but it was pretty important (do I mean emotionally or to the plot? Iāll never tell) and deserves to be remembered.
American Beauty/American Psycho - Fall Out Boy
āIām the best worst thing that hasnāt happened to you yetā
SO MANY of these lyrics are so good for them like. HĆ©lĆØneās beautiful Dolokhovās a psycho... āyou take the full truth and you pour some outā can you imagine them being open and honest with each other? Yeah, me neither. āWe were pity sexā They were just sad and lonely! That was what allowed anything to happen at all in my head (not sex but bear with me itās not my fault those are the lyrics). āAll those dirty thoughts of me, they were never yours to keepā because HĆ©lĆØne is married to someone else, they really have no right to think of each other that way.
Sk8er Boi - Avril Lavigne
āHe wasnāt good enough for herā
UNIRONICALLY THIS SONG. HĆ©lĆØneās complaints about Dolokhov staying with them are just the quoted lyric. āThey had a problem with his baggy clothesā yeah Dolokhovās not as rich and bougie and the rest of them and heās certainly rough around the edges. And then the skater boy ending with a successful music career vs Dolokhov ending with a successful military career and a great reputation and both the women in the songs having sad endings...Iām not wrong.
Headfirst Slide Into Cooperstown On A Bad Bet - Fall Out Boy
āDoes your husband know the way that the sunshine gleams from your wedding band?ā
The affair vibes. The AFFAIR VIBES. And the concept of āI will never end up like him [the husband]/ behind my back I already amā in reference to using HĆ©lĆØne and deciding he hates her right after deciding sheās hot...okay! I see you kinning Pierre, Dolokhov. You ARE being just like her husband :/
You Give Love A Bad Name - Bon Jovi
āShot through the heart and youāre to blameā
This is just Dolokhovās massive I Hate Women monologue condensed. Stop blaming beautiful women for YOUR attraction to them maybe š«
Death Valley - Fall Out Boy
āDonāt take love off the table yetā
This is not a table sex joke this is not a table sex joke this is not a table sex joke this is n-
I didnt add it for that reason it was about a vibe but then. I realized. Now the original reason doesnāt even matter.
Nobody Puts Baby In The Corner - Fall Out Boy
āIāll be your best kept secret and your biggest mistakeā
Tell me the quoted lyric does not SCREAM HĆ©lĆØne/Dolokhov. You canāt. Also āIāll weigh you down Iāll watch you choke/You look so good in blueā really captures hatred as a love language.
This is Love - Air Traffic Controller
Ok I stole this from my friendsā playlist but I did want to explain it because itās not JUST Dolokhov and HĆ©lĆØne in my mind. The whole jealous fool second verse gives me Pierre around the duel energy as well
Bad Boy - Cascada
āBe my weekend lover but donāt be my friendā
Bernie Sanders voice I am once again asking you to hear me out about the unironic meme songs on my War and Peace character playlists. Itās got the refusal to admit that she actually likes hanging out with him down. The line āafter some time you just pushed me asideā referring to Dolokhov teasing Pierre about their affair because he got bored. āI dont need you in my life againā...YEAH Iām fairly sure they dont interact in canon again after that.
Hayloft - Mother Mother
āMy daddyās got a gunā
This song started playing on accident once when I was listening to this playlist and I was like huh. It fits though. The gun thing is twofold: 1) Though he is not her father, Pierre does have a gun in the duel and 2) I think Vassily would happily shoot Dolokhov for his relationships with Vassilyās kids. Itās also just the general forbidden love vibes mixed with the violence vibes.
affection - BETWEEN FRIENDS
āIām looking for affection in all the wrong places and weāll keep falling on each other to fill the empty spacesā
Have I been clear enough about my thesis that their relationship is based in mutual loneliness? Also, I like the acknowledgment that this is in fact the wrong place. I think theyāre both very aware of that.
Walk Away - Franz Ferdinand
āYes Iām cold but not as cold as you areā
This song is for them post-duel. Especially the āI cannot stand to see those eyes as apologies may rise/I must be strong, stay an unbelieverā because 1) I hear the word eyes, I think of Dolokhov and 2) I think sheās too smart to believe any apology he would give her, she knows he doesnāt really mean it. The song kinda reads as someone trying to convince themselves theyāre happy that the relationship is over, which I think is definitely what happens for both of them.
Van Horn - Saint Motel
āTell me do you hate me? Or do you wanna date me?ā
Obsessed with the dynamic of āI like you but thatās embarrassing for both of us Iām gonna act like I hate you insteadā

al pratt - complete sweetheart. he & mary james spend their entire time in college absolutely head over heels for each other but only manage to get it together after they graduate. ideal married life until maryās death while al is trapped in limbo with the rest of the gang
pat dugan - only married his first wife because she was pregnant with mike and it did NOT work out but look at him with barbara! heās fast approaching jay levels!
ted grant - ted is not the marrying kind and heās severely slept with approx every woman heās ever met BUT heās a real gentleman about it and genuinely good company. 10/10 as long as nothing above vaguely amicable feelings is involved
johnny thunder - in the all star comics 1940 run, johnny tells the jsa he canāt join up until he asks his girlfriendās permission. malewife
carter hall - for all the ways he should be banned around children and specifically around kendra, itās undeniable carter did/does love shiera with his whole entire heart and her death is the leading cause for his occasional insanity. good husband, terrible person
johnny quick chambers - the jsaās most famous divorcee. johnny isnāt a bad husband per se & he and libby were ridiculously in love once upon a time but the spark went out and they divorced because libby was embarrassed of his get rich quick schemes/infomercials. libbyās loss is the worldās gain
charles mcnider - in love with his nurse/assistant, myra mason, so thereās definitely something to be said about power dynamics (especially in the 1940s) and he does eventually get myra killed during a midnite adventure but. for a moment in time. They Were Very In Love. and iām counting it as something considering whoās to follow
wes dodds - he & dian have that classic noir detective/girl friday dynamic and itās fun to see someone as endlessly devoted to each other as they are & extra interesting that theyāre one of the few couples from Back Then to never marry but rather opt to be life partners (not to mention the starman arcĀ āsand and starsā regrettably informs us their sex life is better than ever). there is, however, the matter of wes locking dianās nephew in his basement and the insane insane age difference between them (spectre 92 tells us wes was attending socialite parties when dian was just a little girl)
rex tyler - well-meaning and deeply loving but thereās a chance wendi tyler did not, in fact, see her husband even once for the duration of their marriage. chronically absent. award-winning ability to miss birthdays and anniversaries
ted knight - great husband as far as doris knight & the rest of the world were concerned! now, yknow, if it werenāt for those pesky nights spent in sleazy motels with dinah drake after just about every mission for a year or so
alan scott - this is admittedly a little bit of a dilemma considering alan is gay & closeted and traumatised & angry about it but thereās no way of knowing What Might Have Been and how alan would act with a male partner (as i donāt think heās ever had any experiences in the matter thatāve lasted longer than a night) so the fact of the matter is that his marriage to molly is a disaster and sheās unhappy enough about it to sell her soul to the literal devil TWICE. between his World Famous Anger Issues and the fact that alan smashes glasses in casual conversation with his best friend if his temper gets the best of him, this is a well deserved spot

In the 2010s, she went from country superstar to pop titan and broke records with chart-topping albums and blockbuster tours. Now Swift is using her industry clout to fight for artistsā rights and foster the musical community she wished she had coming up.
One evening in late-October, before she performed at a benefit concert at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, Taylor Swiftās dressing room became -- as it often does -- an impromptu summit of musicās biggest names. Swift was there to take part in the American Cancer Societyās annual We Can Survive concert alongside Billie Eilish, Lizzo, Camila Cabello and others, and a few of the artists on the lineup came by to visit.
Eilish, along with her mother and her brother/collaborator, Finneas OāConnell, popped in to say hello -- the first time she and Swift had met. Later, Swift joined the exclusive club of people who have seen Marshmello without his signature helmet when the EDM star and his manager stopped by.
āTwo dudes walked in -- I didnāt know which one was him,ā recalls Swift a few weeks later, sitting on a lounge chair in the backyard of a private Beverly Hills residence following a photo shoot. Her momentary confusion turned into a pang of envy. āItās really smart! Because heās got a life, and he can get a house that doesnāt have to have a paparazzi-proof entrance.ā She stops to adjust her gray sweatshirt dress and lets out a clipped laugh.
Swift, who will celebrate her 30th birthday on Dec. 13, has been impossibly famous for nearly half of her lifetime. She was 16 when she released her self-titled debut album in 2006, and 20 when her second album, Fearless, won the Grammy Award for album of the year in 2010, making her the youngest artist to ever receive the honor. As the decade comes to a close, Swift is one of the most accomplished musical acts of all time: 37.3 million albums sold, according to Nielsen Music; 95 entries on the Billboard Hot 100 (including five No. 1s); 23 Billboard Music Awards; 12 Country Music Association Awards; 10 Grammys; and five world tours.
She also finishes the decade in a totally different realm of the music world from where she started. Swiftās crossover from country to pop -- hinted at on 2012ās Red and fully embraced on 2014ās 1989 -- reflected a mainstream era in which genres were blended with little abandon, where artists with roots in country, folk and trap music could join forces without anyone raising eyebrows. (See: Swiftās top 20 hit āEnd Game,ā from 2017ās reputation, which featured Ed Sheeran and Future.)
Swiftās new album, Lover, released in August, is both a warm break from the darkness of reputation -- which was created during a wave of negative press generated by Swiftās public clash with Kanye West and Kim Kardashian-West -- as well as an amalgam of all her stylistic explorations through the years, from dreamy synth-pop to hushed country. āThe skies were opening up in my life,ā says Swift of the album, which garnered three Grammy nominations, including song of the year for the title track.
She recorded Lover after the Reputation Stadium Tour broke the record for the highest-grossing U.S. tour late last year. In 2020, Swift will embark on Lover Fest, a run of stadium dates that will feature a hand-picked lineup of artists (as yet unannounced) and allow Swift more time off from the road. āThis is a year where I have to be there for my family -- thereās a lot of question marks throughout the next year, so I wanted to make sure that I could go home,ā says Swift, likely referencing her motherās cancer diagnosis, which inspired the Lover heart-wrencher āSoon Youāll Get Better.ā
Now, however, Swift finds herself in a different highly publicized dispute. This time itās with Scott Borchetta, the head of her former label, Big Machine Records, and Scooter Braun, the manager-mogul whose Ithaca Holdings acquired Big Machine Label Group and its master recordings, which include Swiftās six pre-Lover albums, in June. Upon news of the sale, Swift wrote in a Tumblr post that it was her āworst case scenario,ā accusing Braun of ābullyingā her throughout her career due to his connections with West. She maintains today that she was never given the opportunity to buy her masters outright. (On Tumblr, she wrote that she was offered the chance to āearnā back the masters to one of her albums for each new album she turned in if she re-signed with Big Machine; Borchetta disputed this characterization, saying she had the opportunity to acquire her masters in exchange for re-signing with the label for a ālength of timeā -- 10 more years, according to screenshots of legal documents posted on the Big Machine website.)
Swift has said that she intends to rerecord her first six albums next year -- starting next November, when she says sheās contractually able to -- in order to regain control of her recordings. But the back-and-forth appears to be nowhere near over: Last month, Swift alleged that Borchetta and Braun were blocking her from performing her past hits at the American Music Awards or using them in an upcoming Netflix documentary -- claims Big Machine characterized as āfalse informationā in a response that did not get into specifics. (Swift ultimately performed the medley she had planned.) In the weeks following this interview, Braun said he was open to āall possibilitiesā in finding a āresolution,ā and Billboard sources say that includes negotiating a sale. Swift remains interested in buying her masters, though the price could be a sticking point, given her rerecording plans, the control she has over the licensing of her music for film and TV, and the market growth since Braunās acquisition.
However it plays out, the battle over her masters is the latest in a series of moves that has turned Swift into something of an advocate for artistsā rights -- and made her a cause that everyone from Halsey to Elizabeth Warren has rallied behind. From 2014 to 2017, Swift withheld her catalog from Spotify to protest the streaming companyās compensation rates, saying in a 2014 interview, āThere should be an inherent value placed on art. I didnāt see that happening, perception-wise, when I put my music on Spotify.ā In 2015, ahead of the launch of Apple Music, Swift wrote an open letter criticizing Apple for its plan to not pay royalties during the three-month free trial it was set to offer listeners; the company announced a new policy within 24 hours. Most recently, when she signed a new global deal with Universal Music Group in 2018, Swift (who is now on Republic Records) said one of the conditions of her contract was that UMG share proceeds from any sale of its Spotify equity with its roster of artists -- and make them nonrecoupable against those artistsā earnings.
During a wide-ranging conversation, Billboardās Woman of the Decade expresses hope that she can help make the lives of creators a little easier in the years to come -- and a belief that her behind-the-scenes strides will be as integral to her legacy as her biggest singles. āNew artists and producers and writers need work, and they need to be likable and get booked in sessions, and they canāt make noise -- but if I can, then Iām going to,ā promises Swift. This is where being impossibly famous can be a very good thing. āI know that it seems like Iām very loud about this,ā she says, ābut itās because someone has to be.ā
While watching some of your performances this year -- like Saturday Night Live and NPRās Tiny Desk Concert -- I was struck by how focused you seemed, like there were no distractions getting in the way of what you were trying to say.
Thatās a really wonderful way of looking at this phase of my life and my music. Iāve spent a lot of time recalibrating my life to make it feel manageable. Because there were some years there where I felt like I didnāt quite know what exactly to give people and what to hold back, what to share and what to protect. I think a lot of people go through that, especially in the last decade. I broke through pre-social media, and then there was this phase where social media felt fun and casual and quirky and safe. And then it got to the point where everyone has to evaluate their relationship with social media. So I decided that the best thing I have to offer people is my music. Iām not really here to influence their fashion or their social lives. That has bled through into the live part of what I do.
Meanwhile, youāve found a way to interact with your fans in this very pure way -- on your Tumblr page.
Tumblr is the last place on the internet where I feel like I can still make a joke because it feels small, like a neighborhood rather than an entire continent. We can kid around -- they literally drag me. Itās fun. Thatās a real comfort zone for me. And just like anything else, I need breaks from it sometimes. But when I do participate in that space, itās always in a very inside-joke, friend vibe. Sometimes, when I open Twitter, I get so overwhelmed that I just immediately close it. I havenāt had Twitter on my phone in a while because I donāt like to have too much news. Like, I follow politics, and thatās it. But I donāt like to follow who has broken up with who, or who wore an interesting pair of shoes. Thereās only so much bandwidth my brain can really have.
Youāve spoken in recent interviews about the general expectations youāve faced, using phrases like āTheyāve wanted to see thisā and āThey hated me for this.ā Who is ātheyā? Is it social media or disparaging think pieces or --
Itās sort of an amalgamation of all of it. People who arenāt active fans of your music, who like one song but love to hear who has been canceled on Twitter. Iāve had several upheavals of somehow not being what I should be. And this happens to women in music way more than men. Thatās why I get so many phone calls from new artists out of the blue -- like, āHey, Iām getting my first wave of bad press, Iām freaking out, can I talk to you?ā And the answer is always yes! Iām talking about more than 20 people who have randomly reached out to me. I take it as a compliment because it means that they see what has happened over the course of my career, over and over again.
Did you have someone like that to reach out to?
Not really, because my career has existed in lots of different neighborhoods of music. I had so many mentors in country music. Faith Hill was wonderful. She would reach out to me and invite me over and take me on tour, and I knew that I could talk to her. Crossing over to pop is a completely different world. Country music is a real community, and in pop I didnāt see that community as much. Now there is a bit of one between the girls in pop -- we all have each otherās numbers and text each other -- but when I first started out in pop it was very much you versus you versus you. We didnāt have a network, which is weird because we can help each other through these moments when you just feel completely isolated.
Do you feel like those barriers are actively being broken down now?
God, I hope so. I also hope people can call it out, [like] if you see a Grammy prediction article, and itās just two womenās faces next to each other and feels a bit gratuitous. No oneās going to start out being perfectly educated on the intricacies of gender politics. The key is that people are trying to learn, and thatās great. No oneās going to get it perfect, but, God, please try.
At this point, who is your sounding board, creatively and professionally?
From a creative standpoint, Iāve been writing alone a lot more. Iām good with being alone, with thinking alone. When I come up with a marketing idea for the Lover tour, the album launch, the merch, Iāll go right to my management company that Iāve put together. I think a team is the best way to be managed. Just from my experience, I donāt think that this overarching, one-person-handles-my-career thing was ever going to work for me. Because that person ends up kind of being me who comes up with most of the ideas, and then I have an amazing team that facilitates those ideas.
The behind-the-scenes work is different for every phase of my career that Iām in. Putting together the festival shows that weāre doing for Lover is completely different than putting together the Reputation Stadium Tour. Putting together the reputation launch was so different than putting together the 1989 launch. So we really do attack things case by case, where the creative first informs everything else.
Youāve spoken before about how meaningful the reputation tourās success was. What did it represent?
That tour was something that I wanted to immortalize in the Netflix special that we did because the album was a story, but it almost was like a story that wasnāt fully realized until you saw it live. It was so cool to hear people leaving the show being like, āI understand it now. I fully get it now.ā There are a lot of red herrings and bait-and-switches in the choices that Iāll make with albums, because I want people to go and explore the body of work. You can never express how you feel over the course of an album in a single, so why try?
That seems especially true of your last three albums or so.
āShake It Offā is nothing like the rest of 1989. Itās almost like I feel so much pressure with a first single that I donāt want the first single to be something that makes you feel like youāve figured out what Iāve made on the rest of the project. I still truly believe in albums, whatever form you consume them in -- if you want to stream them or buy them or listen to them on vinyl. And I donāt think that makes me a staunch purist. I think that that is a strong feeling throughout the music industry. Weāre running really fast toward a singles industry, but you got to believe in something. I still believe that albums are important.
The music industry has become increasingly global during the past decade. Is reaching new markets something you think about?
Yeah, and Iām always trying to learn. Iām learning from everyone. Iām learning when I go see Bruce Springsteen or Madonna do a theater show. And Iām learning from new artists who are coming out right now, just seeing what theyāre doing and thinking, āThatās really cool.ā You need to keep your influences broad and wide-ranging, and my favorite people who make music have always done that. I got to work with Andrew Lloyd Webber on the Cats movie, and Andrew will walk through the door and be like, āIāve just seen this amazing thing on TikTok!ā And Iām like, āYou are it! You are it!ā Because you cannot look at what quote-unquote āthe kids are doingā and roll your eyes. You have to learn.
Have you explored TikTok at all?
I only see them when theyāre posted to Tumblr, but I love them! I think that theyāre hilarious and amazing. Andrew says that theyāve made musicals cool again, because thereās a huge musical facet to TikTok. [Heās] like, āAny way we can do that is good.ā
How do you see your involvement in the business side of your career progressing in the next decade? You seem like someone who could eventually start a label or be more hands-on with signing artists.
I do think about it every once in a while, but if I was going to do it, I would need to do it with all of my energy. I know how important that is, when youāve got someone elseās career in your hands, and I know how it feels when someone isnāt generous.
Youāve served as an ambassador of sorts for artists, especially recently -- staring down streaming services over payouts, increasing public awareness about the terms of record deals.
We have a long way to go. I think that weāre working off of an antiquated contractual system. Weāre galloping toward a new industry but not thinking about recalibrating financial structures and compensation rates, taking care of producers and writers.
We need to think about how we handle master recordings, because this isnāt it. When I stood up and talked about this, I saw a lot of fans saying, āWait, the creators of this work do not own their work, ever?ā I spent 10 years of my life trying rigorously to purchase my masters outright and was then denied that opportunity, and I just donāt want that to happen to another artist if I can help it. I want to at least raise my hand and say, āThis is something that an artist should be able to earn back over the course of their deal -- not as a renegotiation ploy -- and something that artists should maybe have the first right of refusal to buy.ā God, I would have paid so much for them! Anything to own my work that was an actual sale option, but it wasnāt given to me.
Thankfully, thereās power in writing your music. Every week, we get a dozen synch requests to use āShake It Offā in some advertisement or āBlank Spaceā in some movie trailer, and we say no to every single one of them. And the reason Iām rerecording my music next year is because I do want my music to live on. I do want it to be in movies, I do want it to be in commercials. But I only want that if I own it.
Do you know how long that rerecording process will take?
I donāt know! But itās going to be fun, because itāll feel like regaining a freedom and taking back whatās mine. When I created [these songs], I didnāt know what they would grow up to be. Going back in and knowing that it meant something to people is actually a really beautiful way to celebrate what the fans have done for my music.
Ten years ago, on the brink of the 2010s, you were about to turn 20. What advice would you give yourself if you could go back in time?
Oh, God -- I wouldnāt give myself any advice. I would have done everything exactly the same way. Because even the really tough things Iāve gone through taught me things that I never would have learned any other way. I really appreciate my experience, the ups and downs. And maybe that seems ridiculously Zen, but ā¦ Iāve got my friends, who like me for the right reasons. Iāve got my family. Iāve got my boyfriend. Iāve got my fans. Iāve got my cats.

The Chadification of Juan Luis Vives
My eminent colleague @period-dramallama asked me to make a post compiling all of the wack stuff in Tim Darcy Ellis' critically-acclaimed novel The Secret Diaries of Juan Luis Vives, so here it is!
(CW: Mentions of abuse, anti-Semitism, and miscarriages)
- The novel's premise is that Vives navigates the Henrician court while trying to hide the fact that he's a religious Jewish man. There's a big problem with that: while Vives came from a family of Jewish conversos (members of which were killed by the Inquisition after being accused of secretly practicing Judaism), there's no evidence that he identified as Jewish or practiced Judaism himself. Moreover, his treatise De veritate fidei Christianae partly consists of a refutation of Judaism. I get the narrative appeal of the premise, but turning an anti-Semitic historical figure into a champion for ā let alone a practitioner of ā Judaism doesn't feel right to me.
- Vives' wife Margarita Valdaura and her family are similarly portrayed as practicing Jewish people. According to Carlos G. NoreƱa, Margarita's brother Gabriel probably entered the service of the Church, so I don't think that's very likely.
- Vives bears little resemblance to his historical counterpart in terms of personality. He is much more outgoing, light-hearted, and emotionally resilient than the historical Vives, who was withdrawn, humorless, and suffered from poor mental health all his life. I can't see this Vives crumbling under the pressure of collaborating with Erasmus as he did in real life, for instance.
- Ellis' Vives rivals Mantel's Cromwell in terms of what a babe magnet he is. Margarita Valdaura, Meg More, the Boleyn sisters, Honor Grenville, some minor female characters ā all of them express a desire to hop on his dick at some point in the book.
- Special attention goes to Honor Grenville, who shows up at a banquet Vives is attending, gropes his crotch, and is never seen again.
- Vives shows as much interest in the ladies as they do in him. He flirts with several women, constantly ogles at their boobs (especially Meg's), and has a healthy sexual relationship with Margarita once they marry. Contrast this with the real Vives, who thought flirting was immoral, hated sex, and probably had a sexless marriage.
- On the topic of Vives and sex, Vives recalls that he got a girl pregnant when he was a student at the College of Montaigu. Between this book and John Cunningham's Erasmus' Reformation, I don't know why writers are so desperate to make Renaissance humanists have sex with Parisian women.
- He also recalls that he met the Boleyn sisters at Claude of France's court. Anne sat in his lap and played with his beard, and Mary called him "the biggest smidgeon of Spanishness." Blegh.
- Vives' chadification is reflected in the novel's promotional art: compare the earliest known depiction of Vives to this drawing on Ellis' blog. Ngl, I wheezed with laughter when I first saw the latter.
- I can only remember Erasmus being mentioned a handful of times ā each time in reference to Meg's translation of his Precatio Dominica or being Vives' friend (lmao).
- Thomas More swears way too much in this book. Obviously, the historical More was extremely vulgar in Responsio ad Lutherum, but I don't see evidence that he was especially so in casual conversation. Here, it seems like he swears every other line, and not very cleverly or creatively either.
- At one point, More undresses in front of Vives for no discernible reason. I guess Ellis just had to make Vives see the hair-shirt somehow (???).
- Anne Boleyn is so blatantly evil that it's actually kind of funny. For example, she tries to poison Catherine of Aragon by literally shoving a cup of poison under her nose.
- William Roper is written as a complete monster. He's controlling and physically abusive to Meg and tries to get Vives killed for sleeping next to her to comfort her after she suffers a miscarriage. Most unrealistically, however, is that Roper also has Thomas More under his thumb: if More kicks him out for his behavior, he'll tell Henry VIII that More's been talking shit about the Boleyns. I think the absurdity of all that speaks for itself. Also, I absolutely hate the trend of historical fiction authors writing people as abusive/sexually violent as a quick-n'-easy way to make them unsympathetic when there's no evidence that they were in real life. It's lazy writing.
- I think I should also mention that Roper has spies in this universe, which he uses to keep an eye on Vives. I don't know, man.
- Lastly, I love how the novel ends in 1529 with Vives and Margarita living happily ever after in Bruges because the last decade of Vives' life (1530 - 1540) was absolutely miserable, with him struggling financially and his health (both physical and mental) deteriorating.
EDIT: I can't believe I forgot to include this bit (I must've blocked it from my memory):
- Catherine of Aragon confides in Vives that she and Arthur did indeed have sex, and that she became pregnant with his baby. However, after Arthur's death, Henry VII sent men to attack her and force her to miscarry. Henry did this because he intended to marry her himself and wanted her to give birth to his sons and no one else's. I have nothing to say.
#juan luis vives#the secret diaries of juan luis vives#i hope this met your expectations!#i'm probably forgetting a couple things but i think i got most of it covered#EDIT: i forgot one BIG thing.

I wrote a recent post that made what I thought was a simple, uncontroversial point about early marriage as a solution for avoiding zina and all kinds of concomitant sins and social ills.
I've been absolutely *shocked* at the kinds of opposing statements some people have made, at the leaps of logic, at the vehemence of some people's disagreements with this fairly straightforward point.
Let's break this issue down a bit more, as there seems to be a need.
My initial claim: We as Muslim parents should try (as a collective) to facilitate marriage for young Muslim men and women so that they have less of a need/ excuse to go behind parents' backs and hook up/ date/ have a boyfriend or girlfriend/ watch porn.
Less haram stuff, more halal stuff.
Seems like a no-brainer. Or so I thought!
Some people's reactions:
-No, they should masturbate instead of getting married early.
This is one of the most shocking things I've ever heard a fellow Muslim say with a straight face. *Multiple* people have commented recommending masturbation while shooting down marriage as a solution for young adults.
A brother: "just have a wank, bro."
A sister: young men "should lower their gaze and are permitted by some scholars to relieve themselves (masturbate) as long as it doesn't become a habit. It's that simple."
Really? That simple, huh?
How have we come to this??
Anyway, let's continue.
-No, because divorce is worse than zina. Just "try getting divorced in today's society!"
-No, because "marriage doesn't prevent zina."
-No, because "marriage is not only for fulfilling sexual desires."
-No, because easy come easy go. Anything that comes too easily "won't be appreciated." You "can't have everything on a silver platter."
-No, because what about the children?
-No, because late-teen or college students are not emotionally mature and have no communication skills.
-No, because they first need to be settled and have built something to prove their competence.
-No, this solution is "too simple and idealistic."
-No, because "marriage steals childhood." (???)
-No, because who is going to provide?
-No, because you can't "deflect to earlier Islamic cultural practices" that are only "idealistic, simplistic, and unrealistic" for our modern times. Plus, "romanticized ideals from earlier times is not going to solve the problem of youth."
-No, because you just need self control and you need to learn to "regulate your behavior."
-No, because this "supports the trend of ghosting" and teaches people to "walk away from relationships."
-No, because people in their early 20's don't really know themselves and might change.
-No, we should instead "teach our kids to self-soothe as babies and teach them delayed gratification. Rape is a classic example of what happens when people don't have patience and want instant gratification. Marital rape included."
-No, because sexual urges "are actually quite easy for a lot of people to control!" And "if you can't stop yourself from having sex or you can't control your sexual desires, then there is something inherently wrong with your ability to self regulate your behavior."
-No, because marriage solves nothing. "Sexually deviant people will continue to be sexually deviant whilst married."
-No, because "it's difficult and problematic to compare today's society to the society of the Sahaba and the Prophet SAW."
-No, because "young girls shouldn't be groomed for marriage from the age of 12 just because horny testosterone plagued boys can't control themselves." And also, I "don't want my daughter's youth cut short just to save a young boy who can't control his sexual desires just because he has more testosterone than her."
-No. "Sex isn't everything!"
This sums up the majority of the reasons people brought up to disagree.
It would make this already-long post much too long to respond to each point individually, but here is my general reaction:
1. Marriage, Sex, and Zina:
Marriage is, in fact, one of the strongest and most primary ways to avoid zina. Yes. This is true. I cannot understand how some people try to deny this basic fact.
There are certainly some people who cheat even though they are married. I know this happens. Yet these outliers still do not invalidate the institution of marriage as a way that *on the whole* protects one from falling into zina. Islam encourages marriage as the default for most human beings, as this is more virtuous and safeguards against a plethora of ŁŲØŲ§Ų¦Ų±, grave sins.
2. Masturbation:
How is masturbation a serious solution that some people prefer over marriage?? I am still astounded.
I think people may be confusing the idea that masturbation is preferable to zina, and make the blunder of asserting that masturbation must also therefore be preferable to getting married early. This is false. Masturbation and zina are both sins. There are degrees of sins, and zina has a hadd and is a graver sin than masturbation (which is ALSO still a sin). Getting married early is not a sin.
3. Marriage and Babies:
When I talk about early marriage for young adults (age range of 17-22), that doesn't mean I'm also recommending that they start having children immediately. You can be married and wait for several years before having kids. We all know this is very possible, right? It is a leap in logic to assume that marriage = instant parenthood.
4. Maturity, Readiness, and Preparation for Marriage:
Recommending early marriage does not preclude recommending proper childrearing (including teaching kids early on delayed gratification, patience, self-control, taqwa of Allah, healthy boundaries, etc) or proper marital training, anger management, healthy communication, emotional and psychosocial skills. All of these aspects are important. But they can all work together, no?
It is a leap in logic to assume that we have to choose between marrying as a young adult and emotional maturity.
When I recommend marriage for 17-22 age range, I am in no way trying to say marriage is a joke or a light matter to be played around with. It can be done in this age range with all due seriousness and responsibility and readiness.
5. Severity of Zina:
Zina is classed as a ŁŲØŁŲ±Ų© , a major sin. Allah commands us clearly and severely not only to avoid falling into zina, but actually to avoid COMING NEAR zina.
ŁŁŁŁŲ§ ŲŖŁŁŁŲ±ŁŲØŁŁŲ§Ł Ł±ŁŲ²ŁŁŁŁŁŁ°Ł Ū Ų„ŁŁŁŁŁŁŪ„ ŁŁŲ§ŁŁ ŁŁŁ°ŲŁŲ“ŁŲ©Ł ŁŁŲ³ŁŲ§ŁŲ”Ł Ų³ŁŲØŁŁŁŁŲ§.
"Do not go near adultery. It is truly a shameful deed and an evil way." (Surat Al-Isra', 32)
There are different types of zina, as we know from the hadith: zina of the eyes, zina of the hands, zina of the feet.
The reality is that zina comes with a whole host of concomitant sins. It doesn't just happen by itself. There are precursors to zina. It comes with Ų®ŁŁŲ© (khalwa, blameworthy seclusion), ŲŖŲØŲ±Ų¬ (tabarruj, displaying feminine beauty), Ų„Ų®ŲŖŁŲ§Ų· (ikhtilat, inter-gender casual mixing), flirting, sexting, porn, masturbation.
And people get addicted. Some youths have serious porn addictions, others are addicted to masturbation, while others are addicted to the haram relationships they're in. They can't get out.
Knowing that "I can get married soon; I don't have to wait another whole decade before I am allowed a halal outlet" really helps young people. It gives hope. There's light at the end of the tunnel for them.
Making marriage difficult to attain is one way to shut the door in their faces, and so, in despair and spurred on by a gleeful Shaytan, they just shrug and masturbate/ watch porn/ hook up.
6. Libido: Girls vs Guys:
Some people are under the mistaken impression that early marriage serves only men. They seem to think that teenage girls and young women have little to no sexual urges and only teenage boys have those. This is false.
Many girls (starting from the onset of puberty and through young adulthood) have high libidos and strong sexual desires. Marrying earlier would tremendously help these girls and satisfy their desires and protect them from falling into sins. Marriage is NOT just a tool to help "horny testosterone plagued boys" at the expense of poor abused girls.
I know that anecdotal evidence may not count, but for what it's worth: I personally have known and worked with many girls and young women who have either skirted the territory of zina or fallen headfirst into it.
One Muslim girl who was a sophomore in high school (15 years old) joined the drama club just to meet after school with a non-Muslim male classmate so they could make out without her parents finding out.
One Muslim girl I know went to college deliberately far from her parents with the express purpose of going to parties and having sex. She "experimented" sexually with both men and women. She became so promiscuous that even her non-Muslim friends worried about her.
One young Muslim girl started secretly texting online with a non-Muslim American guy. She was 14 and he was 19. Now she's 21 and he's 26, still talking daily. She occassionally flies to meet him in a different state under the guise of visiting her older married siblings so that her parents don't find out. She goes out with him to eat, smoke weed, and chill. She knows that zina is a very bad sin, so she hasn't had sex with him, but she takes off her hijab when she's with him and wears crop tops that show her midsection and show off the bellybutton ring she secretly got.
Please open your eyes and see the reality of the young Muslim men and women raised in this secular society surrounded by promiscuity and hypersexuality.
Please don't deceive yourself or others regarding the enormity of kaba'ir like zina and masturbation. Don't minimize the gravity of these destroyers.
Please help Muslim youth.

Iād like to get out from under these buses already.
It has been just a little over 7 years since the following things all happened in pretty close proximity to each other: I came out as trans, I started this blog, 4chanās nazi population really broke out into being everyoneās problem, and a cascade of people I loved and trusted started using convenient lies to justify treating me in absolutely monstrous ways without ever looking back. I think thatās long enough to have earned the right to vent about these things so Iām going to do a bit of that here. If you arenāt interested, just donāt click through the break.
I donāt want to spend a lot of time setting all these up and laying out when they happened relative to each other, and I donāt especially want to stir up the heat of naming names. Again, I just need to vent about how messed up it is that these things were done to me and that none of those involved nor anyone who believed the cover stories of various bad actors ever for one second ever looked back.
So this one time I was in this support group of sorts for people dealing with being terrorized by nazis, and there was a firmly established rule that nobody was allowed to invite anyone else into it unless it was unanimously agreed upon that everyone currently in it trusted and felt safe around the person to be added. This lasted up through the addition of like, the 5th or 6th member, who promptly dragged in a whole entourage of people including some really unsavory types. And when I say unsavory types this person dragged a damn nazi into a place where explicitly anonymous trans people under siege from nazis were letting our guards down. And yes, the person dragging him in knew his nazi history. Take a guess how that played out for everyone else.
There was a period of time where I was in a really dangerous place, and someone kept asking me to look through the sort of stuff you read about Facebook employees needing years of therapy for filtering. Cute animals being tortured, killed, desecrated after. Imagery explicitly designed to cause as much distress as possible to trans women specifically. Snuff film stuff. They kept promising me everything I was being asked to catalog was going into a report that would get it all shut down and if I just kept at it, a grant was being secured thatād keep me from ever needing to work, cover my medical expenses, and Iād have safe housing set up to protect me from abusive family and dangerous stalkers. I feel like such an idiot now for believing any of it.
Some people got into a weird stupid argument with someone. I never really heard who, or what was involved. What I do know is that somewhere along the line, someone on one side of it wanted to be done with it, and plenty of people seemed all too happy to go along with it when my name was apparently pulled out of a damn hat for who to use as a scapegoat for whatever it was. And at least a few people on the other side of things decided to make hating me for who the hell even knows what thing that never had anything to do with me a lifelong project, stalking me for years, and continuing to build out the mythology of why trying to make me kill myself is important for... I donāt know, the value of friendship or something? Iām not saying this is a group of bloody-minded people on a power trip, but they certainly seem to enjoy it, and have a long list of people theyāve done it to.
Early on with this, someone who knew I had nothing to do with any of this spoke up about the abuse. And came under fire from the same people, caved in about 5 seconds, and posted a giant retraction claiming not only were they right to be attacking but also that I ātook advantage of her autism to trick her.ā Ghoulish. I hadnāt even talked to her about this.
Someone Iād known for years, met face to face several times, collaborated with. I was talking about some random creep of the sort who just love to do so throwing vile and disgusting accusations my way. She immediately starts trying to distance herself. Lots of āI donāt even know them, Iāve been trying to get them to take a hike for years, Iāve heard all sorts of horrible things about them.ā It wasnāt until she stopped to double check who I was saying was acting unacceptably that I learned oh, she hates me and never uses the right pronouns when Iām not present, apparently.
Throughout all of this, and at least half a dozen other times where hell if I know what prompted it, Iāve just been constantly hit by these waves of entire social circles just ghosting me all at once. Nobody ever says a word. One minute weāre friends, the next I donāt exist.Or worse, theyāre working with nazis to get me killed. And with one very notable exception, I donāt have anyone left to talk me through it. These werenāt just casual acquaintances. These are people Iāve helped get away from bad relationships, move countries or across the country, talked though suicidal episodes. Met their families.
I canāt get work anywhere anymore either. Rentās 50% than patreon brings in.
I think about killing myself a lot.
The worst thing about all of this though? I always talk about this sort of thing without names for... everyoneās safety, really. People always say, these people are abusive, and terrible, and Iām far better off not having any of hem in my life anymore. But the same people who tell me that turn around, and sing the praises of all these people who have done all this to me, constantly. Celebrate them as the kindest people in the world, doing the best work. And I just have to sit here, never saying anything. Nobody has ever had my back, and I never expect that to change.

S1 E4: Saucy Deep Dives: Third Person SIngular Number
After spending the last two months watching and examining Bollywood hits, itās been very exciting for us to introduce our audience to hits from all across South Asia. In this episode, we are thrilled to be watching a Bangladeshi favorite made by one of the most famous contemporary directors there.
Mostofa Sarwar Farooki came into the scene in the early 2000s, at a time when mainstream television and cinema largely existed either in the form of family entertainment or copy-pasted āheroās journeyā scripts made for quick consumption.Ā
This is where Farooki came in with his more casual and approachable filmmaking. His stories revolved around the relatable everyday struggles of ordinary people. This also meant utilizing colloquial language in his cinema (which was rare, given that the media at the time would only depict formal Bangla or a standard dialectical Bangla [for rural stories]).Ā
Third Person Singular Number (2009) was Farookiās third movie, which solidified his position as one of the most notable contemporary directors in Bangladesh.
Third Person Singular Number is conceptualized as a fairytale-like story of Ruba (played brilliantly by Nusrat Imroz Tisha, Farookiās partner, and long-time muse), who is confronted by the challenges of being a single woman in South Asia, after her partner (note, not husband lol) is sent to jail. Ruba struggles with constant harassment as she attempts to find housing and employment. The Prince Charming character of this movie comes to us in the form of Rubaās childhood friend - Topu (a successful musician in Bangladesh, both in the movie and IRL), whose support helps in making Ruba feel safe. Her feelings for Topu force Ruba to engage with her conflicted relationship with her mother (who left her father for her lover) as well as her fidelity to her jailed partner.
One of the most remarkable things about the film is its deliberate focus on Ruba and how it centers her perspective - this is extremely apparent in the cinematography and Farooki being able to employ the feminine gaze aptly. The first half of the movie depicts at length the various ways in which women become victims of sexual assault - be it at home, in public, or in professional spaces.
There's this one scene in particular, where Ruba becomes hesitant to go to the police station as she recalls a news story from a couple of weeks ago where a woman was r*ped at one. A male gaze retelling of this would tell the audience through action - a flashback where the woman is facing violence, or perhaps when Ruba was reading the paper, or conversing about it with someone. But in this story, Farooki chose to make this woman materialize in front of Ruba and tell the story herself. Not only giving voice to an unnamed woman who had met a horrible fate, but also creating a moment of emotional connection between the two women. It humanized what is often just reduced to news headlines, statistics, or water filter conversations. There are hints throughout that she is an unreliable narrator. Resulting in the (spoiler alert!) the fairytale-esque second half of the movie. Fairytales, historical romances, and fan-fictions often serve as great mediums for social commentary, particularly on the dynamics of power (esp. geared towards women). The fact that the only escape available to Ruba from her bleak reality is an absurd Prince Charming figure speaks heavily to the harsh reality of the real Rubas of the world. For them, her ending would not be a possibility.
The use of space in the visuals of the film was also noteworthy, with Ruba being shown to feel trapped or caged in the company of predatory men (even including her own partner, whom she feels stifled by later in the film). This is often done through the use of close and medium shots, along with physical obstructions in the shot. Meanwhile, her relationship with Topu is shown to be much more affectionate and easy-going; this is depicted with a wide shot of the beautiful kashbons of Bashundhara. Not only was this technique used to remark on the state of Rubaās mind (which is rare given that male directors rarely highlight womenās perspectives), it also commentated on the wider issue of South Asian women and how they are often made to feel small and struggle to find space (be it physically or metaphorically).
This beautiful work with space is further used to remark on the silence of the other women in the film (notably, Rubaās cousin, friend, and mother). Unlike Ruba, the only woman with a voice (and the narrator, of course), these women are often seen in the confines of layered cage-like homes (with distinct obstructions like columns, furniture, etc. present in every layer). These characters, like their real-life counterparts, often exist in the crevices of their own homes and are stifled by the domineering presence of the patriarchal structures and insecurities around them.
The two noteworthy women characters (aside from Ruba) are her cousin and her mother. Both of whom we know very little about. However, in their fleeting moments on the screen, some of them make attempts to defy patriarchal structures around them in small but significant ways ā Rubaās mother by being courageous enough to follow her heart and leave a marriage and her cousin by helping Ruba despite her mother-in-lawās objections.
Another interesting thing is that despite Topu being Prince Charming, his character was given depth by not making him entirely selfless and sacrificial. Topuās expectations were conveyed to the audience in a subtle but effective manner, using scenes like his outrage in the forest after Ruba backs out of having sex with him (though sex was never mentioned, only alluded to), as well as the ever-awkward buying condoms at a chemist shop (an entirely silent and secretive transaction, btw).
Rubaās character in the film is shown to be determined, independent and tenacious even while she struggles with the oppressive realities of being a woman under patriarchy. One of the focal points of the movie is her strained relationship with her mother (who passes away, leaving no possibility of redemption or reconciliation ). The film uses an interesting technique of showing Rubaās internal demons manifesting as younger versions of herself, hypothesized to be metaphors for her id (6-year-old Ruba), ego (present Ruba), and superego (13-year-old Ruba) as she battles over her feelings for Topu and consequently her feelings of resentment for her mother. Though her relationship with her mother is significant to Rubaās evolution as a character, very little is shown of her mother and her motivations. Despite trying to give Ruba some semblance of closure with her mother at the end, the film falls short in creating multiple well-written women to enhance the story and the emotional connection to the characters.
Weāve also had the pleasure of having Raidah of Raidahcal on this episode. She does wonderful work addressing contemporary feminist issues in Dhaka, Bangladesh. While we all had different takes on the movie, it was wonderful to have Raidahās unique insights and perspectives. Be sure to check her out. Weāve also had the pleasure of collaborating with her on her podcast Raidahcal in an episode exploring feminist economics ā we would love for you to check it out as well!
She also asked us a question that made us pause a bit: Why are men given passes for not portraying women's realities accurately just because they are creating sophisticated art?
And this made us realize that there is a very thin line between centering a woman's perspective in a film, versus presenting an intrusively voyeuristic gaze to watch her struggle. Ultimately if the author of the art is not able to distinguish the two for everyone watching the movie, is all that nuance pointless? This ambiguity within the film became more clear to us as we left our own echo chambers and were faced with a wonderfully challenging guest and the realization that the film is sometimes as good as the viewer wants it to be.
Even on our Sauce Meter, this film fared better than some of our previous takes. Hereās a breakdown of our scores.
1. Is there at least one character who adds a nuanced representation of a diverse South Asian identity, without stereotyping and tokenization?Ā Ā
Ruba, the protagonist of the film is a complex, well-rounded character and a woman ā the film also uses an unfamiliar perspective by centering the story around the experiences of a woman vs a man (which is considered the default) ā but she is one of the few non-male characters that get significant screen time, so not full points.
0.5
2. Are the primary characters (especially women and marginalized characters) portrayed with agency, individuality, and motivation?
Despite Ruba being limited by the sexist nature of the social structures around her ā notably her struggle to find housing and employment as a single woman, she is shown to have agency and individual motivation ā she is also shown to want autonomy and finds ways to assert herself despite inhibiting circumstances.
0.75
3. Are women and marginalized characters shown to be cognizant of their identities and how they exist within the social context?
Taking half a point off because there are limited representations of women and other marginalized characters, but the glimpses we get into other women apart from Ruba all seem to be painfully aware of how their choices and abilities are limited by oppressive patriarchal structures. Notably, her cousin despite having limited control over her life and household still tries to help Ruba, and Ruba herself has several moments where she points to the tribulations of being a woman in society.
0.5
4. Do the women and marginalized characters have meaningful relationships with each other?
While the womenās relationships with each other are not given a lot of screen time, they remain focal plot points. In particular, Rubaās relationship with her mother is instrumental in the evolution of Rubaās character and arguably even her liberation, however, the movie does not do these relationships complete justice and dedicates very little time to other women or marginalized characters in the movie.
0.25
5. Does it challenge any flawed notions upheld by capitalism, patriarchy, and the caste system?
The movie successfully subverts stereotypical representations of women and even defies traditional ideas of marriage and power dynamics between men and women and for that, it gets a full point!
