Hey, are tumblr brackets still a thing? Well, I'm doing another.
The point of this blog will be to have multiple polls for voting on your favorite internet horror that's at least a decade old. Submissions for other contestants are now open, and the list will be updated as time goes on.
Rules
Nothing with real gore is allowed (ogrish, rotten . com, funky town, etc.)
Try to avoid big-name mascott creepy pastas (Slenderman, Jeff The Killer, etc.)
Most, if not all entries, will include subject matter of varying levels of sensitivity so viewer discretion is advised.
No porn based shock videos (lemon party, 2 girls 1 cup, BME pain Olympics, etc.)
First come, first serve
Under the cut will be already suggested/accepted into the bracket submissions. Google at your own risk.
Update: Thank you guys for all the nominations! I'm going to keep the submissions open until Saturday, May 4th 2024, or until we hit 40 nominees. I'm not familiar with all of the submissions but I've been googling them as I go and will try and update myself on the ones that are new to me.

“Her boots were gorgeous. Seemed like all the French women Cori saw wore amazing shoes.”
“gave a Gallic shrug”
didn’t light it. “But for you, dear Edgar, I will do it.”
“First time in Paris. Nighttime deepened the lamp-lit romance of the city.”
“the back of the Peugeot sedan”
“As concierge, I now live on the Notre-Dame grounds.”
“Nicolette had this amazing mansion overlooking the Seine’s Right Bank.”
“complained about how the desert shouldn’t feel this cold, even in December”
“But you have earned my respect, as strange as it feels to confess that.”
“Cast in amber light, the western facade reached into the night”
“Our Lady has beautiful sisters around Europe.”
“They climbed more than two hundred and fifty steps of aged stone”
“This bell is Emmanuel.”
“The great bell Emmanuel was the one to return home. The others are lost in the mists of time.”
“Only the Viollet-le-Duc statue looks away. He is turned toward the spire, admiring it.”
“Viollet-le-Duc’s face appears on the Saint Thomas statue.”
“When one is in doubt, turn away.”
“I will keep Anton Vaden busy. He is an unrepentant flirt, so please do not take long.”
“a ring of metal barbs curled out from the spire, giving the look of a crown of thorns”
“looked as though he were trying to regain his balance before toppling off the flèche”
“little winged bull craned up his green neck as if worried the surfer apostle would fall and knock them from the roof”
“One side was meant for Bollingen. Maybe the other side was intended for Notre-Dame.”
“I decided it was a waste of time debating the sash. I took it.”
“Okay, maybe it’s a good thing you’re a klepto.”
“There’s one impartial way to decide,” she smiled. “Rock, paper, scissors. Ready?”
“she balanced on the flèche while hugging Thomas’s waist with one arm”
“Where are you?” her roommate asked, sounding weak.
“Never mind, it’s not important.”
“Wait, Cori. That’s not who attacked me.”
“Was it Shay’s blood or Kaylyn’s? He hated the thought, but couldn’t stop it from entering his mind.”
“A stuffed bunny rested on the elevator floor. Blood speckled the pink fur. He remembered buying the Christmas gift”
“No, John. It wasn’t Adriana. Tessa’s description fits Jordan Rayne. The red hair. Even the beauty mark. I think Jordan tried to kill Tessa.”
“She faxed pages from my mother’s journal to Lucrezia Borgia in Switzerland.”
“He flinched, glancing at Jordan, then looking away. He couldn’t believe it.”
“began to swing around with his sidearm. Jordan understood what was happening.”
Brynstone pushed him aside. “We can’t trust her.”
“He saw it all now. She was working with the Borgias. That’s how they knew about Wurm’s hospital ward. Jordan told them.”
“A thought burned in his mind. She thinks I have it. That’s why Jordan didn’t go to Europe.”
“He glanced at the woman tied to the beam. Couldn’t tell if she was Kaylyn.”
“Dumb thing to say. Gunfire blasted.”
“Delgado hadn’t sent Metzger. True to his word, he had sent a commando team.”
“As the commandos struggled to hang on, the chopper whirled away from sight”
“One commando managed to scramble inside the cockpit. He took the controls as the chopper plunged toward the Strip.”
“The spent casing burst from the side, tinkling on the ground. He heard a grunt, followed by heavy footfalls. Had he hit the assassin?”
Words he’d never said in his life. “You shot me.”
“Brynstone pulled a knife from his belt, then charged toward the woman. Relief flooded him when he looked into Kaylyn’s eyes.”
“she crumpled into his arms.
He scooped up Kaylyn, then hurried past Tilton on the floor.”
“Bending on shaky legs, he lowered Kaylyn to the floor before he toppled over her.”
“Before he could, the person landed another hit, this one on his skull. The second blow came faster than the first.”
“Huddled behind a wall, Kaylyn hugged her husband”
“I love you,” he said, kissing her. “Now go.”
“A faint cry. Her head snapped around.”
As John hurried away, she noticed blood soaking through his shirt.”
“Do not fight death,” he told his victim. “Embrace it.”
Does he have John? She couldn’t leave. Not now.
“Prayer candles flickered inside the vast sanctuary, casting it in a medieval glow. Lightning crackled outside the rose window, brightening the stained glass.”
“Everything went black inside the cathedral, except for rows of votive candles clustered around the altar”
Bettencourt said, as rain splashed against the rose window. “His name is Le Stryge.”
“She grabbed one, then sprinted toward the man. Picturing her child, she put everything she had into her swing.”
“The board blasted into his head, vibrating so hard it made her arms ache”
She took it to him again and connected. The blow flipped the man. He collapsed face-first.”
“bent over the woman. Red hair flowed around her delicate face.”
“Are you okay?”
“Thanks to you,” she wheezed. “My name’s Jordan. I work with your husband.”
“Straining, she glanced up at her face. Jordan was smiling.
It was chilling.”
“Wait a minute. He flipped on the flashlight, sweeping it across a wall safe.
Oh God, no.”
“stone taunting steel, a blithe gesture of the old world mocking the new”
“The architect removes any gargoyles posing a safety risk. During the reconstruction, he discovers the Scintilla inside a deteriorating gargoyle.”
“Can we go out there to see him?”
“Promise to be careful. It is dark and quite dangerous.”
“even the tip of his notorious tongue”
“Santo lunged, then snapped his arms around Cori. Wurm jumped on him, but Santo Borgia flung him off.”
“pitched her over Le Stryge. She felt weightless as her body cut through the air.”
“he was no match for Wurm’s fury. He swung the metal flashlight, shattering Santo’s collarbone”
“You shouldn’t have thrown Cori off the tower,” he snarled
“The bottom crocket jabbed her rib cage, slowing her fall before she grabbed the curved stone”
“Hanging from the crocket, she thought about how it could still happen if she lost her hold and dropped two hundred feet”
“Bracing against the parapet, she glanced at the highest crocket below Le Stryge, the one broken by her fall.”
“the grotesque’s tongue instead pointed at the crocket a few feet below. The Scintilla wasn’t concealed inside the grotesque, but beneath him.”
“The affection surprised her. He pulled away, acting like the moment had never happened.”
“The assassin had said that Shay was in a “safe place.” He meant it. The sick son of a bitch”
“Baby girl?” he called. “Daddy’s here. I’ll get you out.”
Her cries sounded weaker. He kept talking as he punched digits. “Hang on, baby girl.”
“John? Where are you?”
“Kaylyn, get out,” he called. “Metzger’s around here somewhere.”
“Ja, I am.”
“Didn’t matter. He would be a threat even on his deathbed.”
“There is one thing that terrifies you. Something that scares you to death. And that’s losing your family.”
“Jordan stepped from the shadows. She pressed the SIG’s barrel against Kaylyn’s temple. Fear washed over his wife’s face.”
“I never thought you would work for the Borgias.”
“The Borgias work for me,” she boasted. “I’m using them.”
“Do you realize,” Metzger asked in a hushed voice, “that your baby has stopped crying?”
“Jordan had betrayed him. How far would she go?”
“Tell me the combination.”
“Think about your wife, John,” Jordan growled.
Jordan called. “Forget about Shayna. Save your wife, John. You and Kaylyn can have another kid.”
“Brynstone knew the last number, saying “vier” at the same time as Metzger, realizing the 3-3-2-8-4 combination spelled D-E-A-T-H.”
“As he opened the door, he looked back to shoot Metzger.
He was gone.”
“reached inside the safe for his daughter”
“Do you hear the sirens?” he asked. “The Brynstones have called an ambulance. Las Vegas’s finest will be here any moment.”
“I’m willing to gamble on you,” he purred. “Isn’t that what Vegas is all about?”
“Not without the Scintilla. We’ve come too far. Sacrificed too much.”
“Is it the Scintilla?” she asked, unable to suppress her excitement.
Wurm looked up with twinkling eyes. “It’s the formula for the White Chrism.”
“they found Nicolette leaning against the doorway, making the sign of the cross”
“From high inside the spire, a thick rope rocked Anton Vaden in midair”
“Putain!” she cursed at Adriana. “You monsters killed my friend. Are you out of your minds?”
“Santo Borgia dove for the gun. Wurm got there first, kicking it down the stairs.”
Santo Borgia ripped it from her body and tossed the coat out the spire window.
Her eyes brightened with horror. “No!”
“Adriana shoved aside Bettencourt, then grabbed the rope and slid out the opening after Wurm”
“The pain seemed hotter now, searing deep inside.
Bettencourt returned, holding Vaden’s gun.”
“I have one shot. Better make it count.”
“Grabbing the rope, Cori climbed out the window. Bettencourt followed.”
“Isn’t the same true of you, Father?”
“I told you to never call me that.”
“Sirens cried over the soft rush of the River Seine”
“Thought you had it all figured out, didn’t you? Your people will never learn.”
“Give me the Radix. I have Cesare Borgia’s blood flowing inside me. The Radix is my birthright.”
“This is my salvation for a broken life.”
Adriana sprinted toward him. An officer started firing.
“Cori screamed as Edgar Wurm and Adriana Borgia fell from the cathedral. Officers climbed down to the catwalk, shouting in French. Bettencourt yelled back at them.”
“She hadn’t always understood Wurm, but Cori knew she would never forget him”
“His soul felt numb, holding her tiny blue hand”
“searched the hospital for President Armstrong. She couldn’t wait to tell him the news.”
“Staff permitted one visitor at a time. They didn’t argue over the choice.”
“The Knight? The man who called you? He’s my boss. His name is Lieutenant General James Delgado.”
“Balsam. Figs. Salt. A few other ingredients. And of course, the Radix.”
“Edgar Wurm swallowed it. Right before he died.”
“Wurm’s dead?” Brynstone slumped against a wall.
“He pressed on the delicate golden clasp, then opened it. His eyes widened.”
“Cori must’ve stripped a piece from the Radix, then placed it inside the locket”
“One billion isn’t bad for a counterfeit miracle plant.” He patted her shoulder. “Go.”
“she wore an enormous smile. Red hair drifted around her face, almost in slow motion.”
“You shot her in the back. You are a coward.”
Metzger said to the little root. “You have caused a great many problems for a great many people.”
“he blasted past a customer, almost knocking him over as he sprinted down another aisle”
“The paste transformed into an iridescent liquid”
Brynstone handed the manager a hundred-dollar bill. “Sorry for the mess.”
He sprinted toward the door.
“The president invited Deena to join him and the First Lady as they held vigil”
Eyes open now, Dillon stared at the ceiling. His lips parted. “Al.” He swallowed, then whispered, “ex.”
“Alex,” she yelled. “Come here.”
President Armstrong bolted in.
“Alex.” Dillon swallowed, forcing out another few words. “You win.” He closed his eyes. His body slumped.
“A flood of doctors and nurses burst into the room, shoving aside President Armstrong and Deena”
“As they made it to the door, Deena heard a doctor say, “He’s not responding. Charge three hundred.”
“Enough with your fantasies,” Bitonti countered. “You are a madman.”
“I am demanding an investigation. You will be excommunicated. With God’s blessing, you will find yourself in prison.”
“He had seen me talking to Cress before I entered the cathedral. The man had seen Cress kidnap his friend.”
“I recognized the face.”
The Knight held his breath.
“You are a fine artist,” Bitonti continued. “And a madman.”
“Listen and fear me. I am a knight of the Lord. I am greater than your blind church. Run to the Vatican and hide. I will find you. And I will destroy you.”
“Delgado wrapped his fingers around the phone, snapping the cover shut”
“He’ll pull through. Dillon always pulls through.”
“The words faded into a deadened silence, the man still moving his lips”
“He glanced at Deena, looking into her reddened eyes. And he knew.”
“And he knew that he had lost Dillon forever”
“Brynstone had not come into this assignment as a believer. Everything changed”
“We tried everything. She was a courageous little fighter. I’m sorry.”
“Brynstone opened his mouth to speak. Nothing came out.”
“Brynstone walked into the hospital room as Kaylyn finished praying. She knelt beside the bed, holding Shay’s little hand.”
“I can’t lose you too,” Kaylyn said through soft tears.
“his fingers gliding through fine curls and down her soft cheek”
He shut his eyes. Bit his lip. “I have to try something.”
“This is the White Chrism,” he explained. “The perfect medicine.”
“Kay, trust me.”
“John, stop it,” she cried. “Just stop it.”
She collapsed against the wall.
“John Brynstone kissed his daughter on the forehead, then whispered a prayer.”
“Scripture drifted into his mind, where Jesus took a dead child by the hand and said, “Talitha, kum,” meaning, “Little girl, get up.”
“Will anyone find out you hired people to take care of Dillon Armstrong?”
“I stepped out of the theater and called, but I never said to kill him. That was your doing.”
The Knight smiled. “You mustn’t worry, Mr. Vice President.”
“We searched Notre-Dame in case he’d dropped it. No sign of the Radix.”
“The ‘miracle baby’ is John Brynstone’s daughter.”
“I want both agencies watching Shayna Brynstone for the rest of her life.”
“Never before have the Knights of Malta held positions as president, CIA Director, and NSA Director at the same time.”
“She found John Brynstone, running her hand along his back as he embraced her”
“Holding their toddler, Kaylyn gave a one-armed hug”
“That chilling night at Notre-Dame last week had forged an unlikely friendship”
“The thing that troubled her about that night at Notre-Dame? Nicolette had shot Adriana’s brother, but his body had disappeared.”
“A fuzzy duckling and a sad-faced bear cuddled against the heart-shaped monument, stuffed companions sharing time with a lost child”
“Crumbling in sorrow, the couple dropped to their knees in the snow”
“John had quit his government job, hoping to patch up his marriage”
“What would that do to a person? Shay looked beautiful now, but what changes did the Radix produce inside her tiny body?”
“He was staring at John and Shay. Cori’s gaze dropped to the man’s leather shoes. Black and polished.”
“Cori had a terrible sense that the stranger from behind the angel monument was hiding somewhere out here, waiting to snatch the toddler”
“The child trained her gaze on the bear and duckling. She held out her bunny, dancing it in a jumble of floppy ears as she shared a bubbling conversation with the other creatures.”
“She blinked, staring at the child’s knee.
The jagged cut had vanished.”
A serene look crossed her face. Her small lips parted as she said, “Auw gone.” The little girl giggled.
“Heart drumming in her ears, she scooped up Shay”
“unable to believe what she had witnessed. With the White Chrism inside of her, Shay Brynstone had become the ultimate realization of the alchemical dream.”
“He coughed more blood. He glanced around the room and recognized the walls. The studio.”
“You adore martyrs. Don’t you wish to become one?”
“Because of Jordan Rayne, I am quite wealthy. Besides, your library will not survive to see the new year.”
“My possessions,” he pleaded. “Will they burn?”
“It all dies with you.”
“Tonight, we’ll pit my blaze against your little plant,” he smiled. “Herr Delgado, how strong is your faith in Dr. Brynstone’s root?”
“I came after you. I planned to stab you with the dagger I’d used to kill your father.”
Delgado choked, his face bright from the firelight. “I bled that evening for the grace of God, but it was worth the pain. That night, I transformed into the Knight.”
Brynstone lowered the Glock. “Told you before. I don’t believe in wasting bullets.”
“His face contorted in agony, making a death mask more haunting than the martyred souls in his paintings”
“Please accept it with my compliments.
Perhaps we’ll meet in the new year?
—M”
“More crude than his later work, it showed a king stabbing a saint”
“He recognized the saint’s face. He studied the ice blue eyes, captured forever in torment. His father’s eyes.”
“In the center of the mausoleum, a raised oblong coffin stone supported the Belgian marble tomb where Edgar Wurm had been laid to rest”
“Wurm’s body was not inside. The tomb was empty.”
“Footprints carved in fresh snow. Leading from the mausoleum’s door, the prints curled past the tree and disappeared at the wet road.”
Brynstone nodded. “Or Edgar Wurm.”
—————————
“And let me be clear that the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, in its long and storied history, has never expressed interest in the mythical Radix”

**********
Somehow, impressively, this year was even worse for my reading habits than 2020. I didn't read nearly enough -- you'll notice a lot of very short works on that already-pretty-damn-short book list -- and, overall, the stuff I did read was much too low-quality.
(I was seriously contemplating making a couple of snarky anti-awards this year. Some of those books were bad.)
Public transit really made a difference, man.
Anyway. Onwards and upwards. I'm guessing that 2022 may continue to be pretty rough, reading-wise, but...we will do better.
I continue to seek recommendations for Really Good Reading Material. Especially recommendations for Really Good nonfiction -- stuff in the "I now feel I know something substantial and important about the world" or "I now feel like I've been shown how to see things in a whole new light" categories. Excellent fiction is also great, of course, but I do have a small stack of plausibly-excellent fiction to which I haven't gotten yet (so that I could plow through easily-digestible trash, in many cases).

Knights and Dames of Malta
1. Knight of Grace and Devotion, Order of Malta 5. His Royal Majesty Drolor Bosso Adamtey I became the first African leader to be knighted into the Ecumenical Order of the Knights of Malta, Sovereign Order of St. John of Jerusalem, in 2009. King Adamtey, who is known in private life as Dr. Kingsley Fletcher, is the Suapolor of the Se (Shai) Traditional Area of Ghana. He is also a citizen of the United States.
The Sovereign Military Order of Malta (SMOM), officially the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes and of Malta, commonly known as the Order of Malta or Knights of Malta, is a Catholic lay religious order, traditionally of military, chivalric and noble nature. The order has been called "the smallest sovereign state in the world".
SMOM claims continuity with the Knights Hospitaller, a chivalric order that was founded c. 1099 by the Blessed Gerard in medieval Jerusalem. In terms of international law, it is an establishment of the 19th century, recognized at the Congress of Verona of 1822, and since 1834 headquartered in Palazzo Malta in Rome. The order is led by an elected Prince and Grand Master. Its motto is Tuitio fidei et obsequium pauperum ('defence of the faith and assistance to the poor'). The order venerates the Virgin Mary as its patroness, under the title of Our Lady of Mount Philermos.
The headquarters of the Order of Saint John had been located in Malta from 1530 until 1798. It was technically a vassal of the Kingdom of Sicily, holding Malta in exchange for a nominal fee, but declared independence in 1753.
The Holy See was established as a subject of international law in the Lateran Treaty of 1929. In the following decades, the connection between the Holy See and the Order of Malta was seen as so close as to call into question the actual sovereignty of the order as a separate entity. This has prompted constitutional changes on the part of the Order, which were implemented in 1997. Since then, the Order has been widely recognized as a sovereign subject of international law in its own right.
It maintains diplomatic relations with 110 states, has permanent observer status at the United Nations, enters into treaties and issues its own passports, coins and postage stamps. Its two headquarters buildings in Rome enjoy extraterritoriality, similar to embassies, and it maintains embassies in other countries. The three principal officers are counted as citizens.
The Order has 13,500 Knights, Dames and auxiliary members. A few dozen of these are professed religious. Until the 1990s, the highest classes of membership, including officers, required proof of noble lineage. More recently, a path was created for Knights and Dames of the lowest class (of whom proof of aristocratic lineage is not required) to be specially elevated to the highest class, making them eligible for office in the order.
The order employs about 42,000 doctors, nurses, auxiliaries and paramedics assisted by 80,000 volunteers in more than 120 countries, assisting children, homeless, handicapped, elderly, and terminally ill people, refugees, and lepers around the world without distinction of ethnicity or religion. Through its worldwide relief corps, Malteser International, the order aids victims of natural disasters, epidemics and war. In several countries, including France, Germany and Ireland, local associations of the order are important providers of medical emergency services and training.

30 Second Fanfic: Time to Put Paulie to bed...
Fluffy stuff from the 30 Second Fanfiction Series, Paul is drunk off his head and babbling and John, for once, has to take care of him. They’re both really sweet and adorable.
Excerpt: “John, look at me! I’ve a cape, just like Batman! Look! I can fly! I don’t need that LDS stuff! I can fly!” At that moment, John realized that Paulie, ever the lightweight (and currently confusing Lysergic acid diethylamide with the Church of the Latter Day Saints), had consumed all the drink he could possibly handle for one night and should be bundled off to bed. He set about the room, shaking hands and making their excuses to their hosts, because even he knew that sometimes manners mattered, and this was one of those times. “Lovely night, and thank you, we’ve had a grand time, but you see Paul is a bit knackered and we have an early sound check, so we’ll be leaving. No, please don’t get up, don’t trouble yourselves, we’ll see ourselves out.” “I can’t see!” Paul murmured as he clutched John’s hand. “I must be invisim…invism…imbisival! I can’t see! And nobody can see me, too!” “That’s right, love,” John said, getting a sense of what Paul had had to deal with, all too often, during those pub-crawling nights in Hamburg. “Everything is all right, you’re just invisible, so hold on to me, and I’ll get us home before you get visible again, and people can see you.” “Oh, I LOVE YOU!” Paul hollered, shaking his head back and forth as he tried unsuccessfully to shrug the cape off his head. “’M-member that time on the bus, when I didn’t have enough money to get home, and that nice man gave me a quid? And I shouted ‘I love you’ at him because he was leaving, and I didn’t know wh-what to shay?” “Yes, Doll, I remember,” John smiled fondly. “Jus’ like that!” Paul shouted. “Shhhh! I’m right here, you don’t have to shout, Paulie. Just like what?” “Just like that guy on the bus, I love you just like that!” “Ah, so you’re grateful to me and don’t know what to say, is that it?” “Wheeeeeee! The room is spinny when I shake my head!”John laughed out loud. “You’re pissed, mate.”“Ya-Aye, I think I might be, but you know John…” Paul paused to let out a frank but dainty burp, “You know, Johnny, the Yanks in Engl–in ‘Merica, I mean, the Yanks? You know the Y-Yanks?” He burped again. “I’m familiar with them, yes, Macca. What about the Yanks?”
