Avi Cue, 11288 Ventura Blvd, Los Angeles (Studio City), CA 91604
Tumblr media
Avi Cue started as a pop-up. The first brick & mortar in Studio City is already attracting crowds and positive press. The Israeli owner perfected his wagyu shawarma with 11-spices in his backyard. The shawarma cone on a vertical rotisserie is visible from the dining area.
The menu is limited: the wagyu shawarma sandwich ($15), vegan shawarma sandwich with fried cauliflower, arayas, kabab sandwich, salad (you can add shawarma), fries (you can add shawarma), drinks, and dessert. The shawarma is a blend of wagyu beef and lamb. Order at the counter and they’ll call your name when your order is ready.
Salad loaded with shawarma ($17): arugula, radish, tomato, red onion, parsley, sumac vinaigrette, freshly shaved wagyu/lamb shawarma. The portion was smaller than I expected but there was a good amount of arugula and shawarma. The shawarma is covered in spices and thinly shaved into larger pieces. You can taste the gamey quality of the lamb and also the flavor of the wagyu. It’s very good. The salad was simple but fresh. I liked all the ingredients and the tahini added a creamy component that was satisfying. The veggies were cut into thin slices on a mandoline. It was on the plain side though.
There are bottles of tahini and amba (a sour sauce) around the restaurant. They also have free coffee. The coffee is hot, sweet, and spiced with cardamom.
Avi Cue is in a small strip mall. I couldn’t find any parking. The place is popular. The décor is pretty simple and most of the seating is counter seating facing a wall.

I like to think the only reason (besides the stupid editors deleting the scene where Rhodey demanded a search party) that Rhodey didn’t search for Tony when he was presumed dead in IM3 is because he was used to it. Like when he went missing in IM1, Rhodey was like, “oh no!!” but by the time we got to IM2 self destruction and Avengers’ wormhole sacrifice, Rhodey has learned Tony will never die and can pretty much rescue himself, and when he does, maybe Tony will finally share with him whatever post-near-death-experience snack he’s having.

The worst feeling ever is when you’re eating something so so delicious but there’s too much of it and you can’t finish it but you can’t not finish it because it’s so fucking good and then you start to resent the food bc it hurts to eat by that point but it’s just too tasty to stop 😖

Patar Shawarma, 625 E Colorado St, Glendale, CA 91205
Tumblr media
I’ve been to this same spot multiple times for Middle Eastern food. Falafel Arax became Khatun and now Patar Shawarma. Patar specializes in Armenian style shawarma. The meat is not halal. The menu includes shawarma (pork or chicken) served as a sandwich, platter, or bowl, and kebabs served as a wrap or plate. There’s a refrigerator with cold drinks, including yogurt drinks.
Order at the counter. They’ll bring the food to you. It’s interesting that although they do not have an open kitchen, they installed cameras so you can see what’s going on in the kitchen. The shawarma is freshly shaved off the vertical rotisserie. They also press the sandwiches in a panini press.
Pork shawarma on a baguette ($12.41): with tomato, cucumber, onion, hot pepper, parsley, garlic sauce, house sauce. If there was any garlic sauce, I could not tell. The sandwich was small but they did stuff if with lots of meat and veggies. The chicken was in small pieces and quite tender. The bread was crunchy on the outside but soft on the inside. It was about the size of a banh mi. Enjoyed the flavors but the house sauce (it was slightly sweet – might have had tomato/ketchup in it) isn’t as good as the house sauce at other shawarma places in town and the sandwich is small.
I still recognize some of the décor from the Khatun days. The décor is somewhat of an afterthought. The place was clean though.
Parking was easy since the strip mall has its own parking lot. They kept the door open and the security guard for the jewelry store kept smoking in front of the door. There’s a 3.5% discount if you pay with cash.
