SHANQUELLA ROBINSON’S DEATH could have easily fallen through the cracks. In the first two weeks after the 25-year-old from North Carolina was pronounced dead during a group vacation to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, her story was limited to a few local news reports. It appeared that her death would be treated like those of many other Black women and girls – with cursory, if any, attention from the news media. But then, video of a woman being beaten emerged, and the news of her death went viral.
One tweet by North Carolina blogger Mina Lo with the words, “Rest in Power Shanquella Robinson” has garnered more than 50,000 likes and nearly 17,000 retweets. National news organizations, including CNN and the New York Times, have since picked up Robinson’s story, highlighting the power and potential of Black media platforms. From the killing of Lauren Smith-Fields last year to Robinson last month, Black people online have been a driving force behind elevating stories about missing and murdered Black women and girls in the absence of mainstream media.
Black women and girls face high rates of intimate partner violence, sexual assault and homicide. However, their cases are rarely treated with urgency. Robinson’s case stands out for the level of attention it received due to not only her family’s advocacy, but also the Black-owned blogs and social media accounts that recirculated the video and emerging details, pushing it into the view of a wider audience.
“We’ve relied on the connections that we have in Black communities to spread the word of issues that are of importance to us for centuries,” said Dr. Meredith Clark, an associate professor of journalism and communication studies at Northeastern University who researches Black Twitter and Black resistance online. “It reaffirms something that we say a lot – ‘We all we got’ – and this, to me, is an example of what that looks like in a news media context.”

Mexican authorities have issued an arrest warrant for at least one of the six travelers, but a U.S. State Department authorization is needed for extradition.
That's probably a sheet of paper with a signature that the State Department has just been too busy.... for a year, to process.

It’s truly a sick, sick world we live in. Women are out here being murdered every day just for existing. Maintenance men, so-called friends, boyfriends, racists, homophobes, co-workers, roommates, managers/superiors, rapists, abusers, men who simply can’t take no for an answer, and the list goes on and on and on can literally decide they want to take your life at any second and you’re just gone from this world and the people that love you forever. For no reason at all other than they felt like it and they could. I watched the Vanessa Guillén documentary earlier today and of course, Shanquella Robinson’s story has been all over social media for the past week. My heart is so heavy.
There’s no solution to this problem or protection for us. Every day is Russian Roulette for women and that’s so damn sad.

"They said she wasn't feeling well. She had alcohol poisoning," Salamondra Robinson told WJZY. "They couldn't get a pulse. Each one of the people that was there with her was telling different stories." But an autopsy later revealed that Robinson's spine was cracked and she had a broken neck. The group of friends traveled back to the US, while Robinson's body was held there for about two weeks, per WJZY. ... Earlier this week, Gerald Jackson, a local blogger who runs The North Carolina Beat, released a graphic video of a woman attacking an unclothed woman. Robinson's father, Bernard Robinson, confirmed to The Daily Beast that his daughter is the woman being attacked in the 18-second video that has gone viral. In the video, a person could be heard saying, "Quella, can you at least fight back?" The video set social media ablaze this week, with thousands calling for justice for the Robinson family. Even celebrities weighed in. "They attacked her," Bernard Robinson told TMZ. "They put a hole in my heart. That was my only child. I'm heartbroken. I can't even be a grandaddy. I can't walk her down the aisle. I can't hear her voice." He continued, "They left her in that house ma'am. They left her there for the maid to find her. Do you know how much pain my daughter suffered?...I just want justice."

#SadNews Shanquella was part of a group that traveled from Charlotte to Cabo on October 28 and rented out a villa to celebrate a friend's birthday. Her mother, Salamondra Robinson, told Fox affiliate WJZY that she last spoke to her daughter moments after she had settled down for a meal with her friends. They agreed to talk the next day, but the phone call that she received instead was from one of Shanquella's friends, who told her that her daughter was sick and they were waiting for a doctor to arrive. 'They said she wasn't feeling well. She had alcohol poisoning,' Salamondra said. 'They couldn't get a pulse. Each one of the people that was there with her was telling different stories.' She later received a tragic call from one of Shanquella's friends claiming the young woman had died from food poisoning. 'No one told the same story, so I never believed them anyway,' Salomondra said. A man, who appears to be filming the sickening assault, taunts Shanquella 'can you at least fight back?' Shanquella attempts to get away from her attacker and replies 'no', before the woman slams her to the floor next to the bed. The woman then punches and knees her in the head. The woman then yells at Shanquella to 'get up, I'm tired of the ****.' A representative for Villa Linda 32, the property where the group was staying, told WJZY that the concierge contacted a doctor who attempted to revive Shanquella. She was declared dead at 3pm local time, reportedly about 15 minutes after she was beaten. A copy of the autopsy report obtained by Salamondra indicated that Shanquella's neck was broken. WJZY reported that the area in the death certificate that would show if Shanquella had been intoxicated only indicated that she 'was found unconscious in her living room'. The certificate also has an area where authorities note whether the death was accidental or violent. They inscribed 'yes' into the section, but did not choose accidental or violent. Shanquella's body was flown back to Charlotte last Thursday and a funeral service was held over the weekend. #dailymail https://www.instagram.com/p/ClC_I2NuxSo/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Shanquella Robinson's Family To Protest In D.C. For No Charges
#JusticeForShanquella: Family Plans D.C. March After Feds Refuse To File Charges, Lawyer Sue-Ann Robinson Releases Statement

They don’t want to hear us, so we’re going to have to make more noise.
Shanquella Robinson is in danger of not receiving the justice that she and her family so richly deserve because the United States government has deemed the evidence insufficient. Despite the viral video that shows the graphic depiction of how she was beaten and who she was beaten by, the U.S. Attorney’s Office has declined to press charges against her known assailant. Moreover, the feds have failed to lift a finger to assist in the extradition of DaeJahnae Jackson, the “friend” who was seen attacking Shanquella, despite Mexican authorities issuing a warrant for her arrest.

According to a Newsweek article, attorney Sue-Ann Robinson says that Shanquella’s family is planning to march on Washington, D.C. next month in a protest response to yesterday’s announcement that no criminal charges will be filed.

Robinson also released a public statement of her own decrying the feds’ lack of action on a young Black woman’s behalf.
Her statement posted to Advocate Media reads:
There are U.S. and Mexican autopsy reports which show a difference in findings. These discrepancies can be credited to the delay in investigation by U.S. officials, who conducted the autopsy once Shanquella’s body was embalmed. When an investigation is delayed, the hard evidence to support prosecution diminishes, but in this case, that is due to the U.S. not considering this case to be a high priority.”
“While it is discouraging for the loved ones of Shanquella that their own F.B.I. will not be pursuing charges against Shanquella’s aggressor, it is our stance that justice is still possible for her death. There is still a chance at justice in Mexico. Mexican prosecutors have issued arrest warrants in this case and are willing to pursue charges. We strongly encourage the United States to prioritize facilitating extradition of those responsible for her death to Mexico to face accountability there.”
Those discrepancies are no small deal. The autopsy performed by Mexican authorities stated that Shanquella’s spine was broken, but the Mecklenburg County report states some very direct contradictions via WBTV:
No skull fractures are present
No evidence of injury to [the] upper airway section and no hemorrhage in the surrounding neck muscle or fracture/hemorrhage of the mid-to-lower cervical and upper thoracic vertebral column.
Removal and sectioning of the organs reveal no evidence of other trauma or disease process.
No fractures of the ribs or the remainder of the vertebral column.
Slight lateral scoliotic curvature is present in the upper-to-mid thoracic spine.
No evidence of hemorrhage or disruption of any of the musculature, ligaments, or spinal elements.
No fractures are seen on the posterior of the spinal column.
No evidence of any disruption of the spinal column alignment or subluxation.
We’re not about to take our foot off their necks. Something needs to be done. #JusticeForShanquella

This is just so heartbreaking. Socialites, one of the four people who were kidnapped in Mexico on Friday shared a sentimental repost about Shanquella Robinson’s death just months before she’d come close to losing her own life. South Carolina native Latavia McGee had reacted to the disturbing video of Robinson being beaten by a so-called “friend” back in October, shortly after arriving at the rental property that she and her acquaintances were staying at in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
__________________________________________________
One of the friends was set to celebrate their birthday during the trip, but just one day after her arrival, Robinson was found dead, with those who were around her saying she had died from alcohol poisoning; the autopsy, however, stated otherwise. In her Facebook post, McGee, who reportedly traveled to Mexico for a tummy tuck, took a screenshot of a message written by another social media user, who said that having a “key-key” with someone does not instantly make them your friend. “The term is associate,” she wrote.
__________________________________________________
“Friendship isn’t determined by time spent having fun or how long you’ve known someone. Are they there are you guys have a disagreement, illness, goes broke or you told them ‘no.’” It was the viral video of Robinson getting beaten that would spark public outrage against Mexican officials who had initially attributed her death to alcohol poisoning, as claimed by her friends.
