I'm not the killer that little girls call their Hero| Shang-Chi x reader
Summary: For years, he thought you were dead. His best friend. His childhood friend where his father had arranged plans that one day the two of you would marry each other. That all changed when he got to know that you were missing. Several years later, he found you alive, but you're not the same girl he grew up with since you were hired to kill him.
A/N: Y'all after watching ep. 4 in hawkeye and Yelena made the entrance? WOW, just *chefs kiss*. That episode finale is inspired by this fic so yeah. This is an AU where Yelena is with the other Avengers yeah.
Warnings: trauma, mind control, violence, angst.
Even in your dreams, you could still see him. The boy you once loved or maybe even a part of you still loved him. But you knew that couldn't happen. You wouldn't see him again since you were stuck in a nightmare. A far worse than death.
They would call you the Grim Reaper. You were a higher level up in the red room and your skills were far deadlier than Yelena and Natasha. The names tasted bitter in your sense because of all of the rumors you heard.
Dreykov was killed and the red room didn't exist anymore. But some of them tried to recreate what he did. But they didn't succeed because the technique was advanced.
Your eyes drifted towards the figure in front of you. The little voice in your head was telling you to kill. After Dreykov and the Red Room were destroyed, people thought he was the one who was the leader.
However, three more people who had the same agenda as Dreykov spread all around the world to create more Black Widows. But this time, they were smarter and they hid in the shadows.
After when they heard that he failed, they sent you to find the people who escaped the Red Room. Natasha was already dead and Yelena was the only one who was left standing.
Yelena had moved on from her sister's death and after she tried to kill Clint Barton for revenge, she joined the team.
''Target is spotted,'' Yelena responded into her comm as her eyes drifted from the target. She leaned towards the gun as she aimed for the person on the rooftop.
''Wait for our signal, we don't know if he's armed,'' Sam spoke as he looked towards Shang-chi. He nodded before he looked towards Katy not far from Yelena with her bow and arrow.
''The target is running away, shit he knows.'' Sam cursed as he signaled Bucky. ''Yelena, now!'' Sam shouted as Yelena let out a grunt when she felt you hop on her shoulders and knock her down. ''I'm a little busy over here.'' She growled as she leaned on her elbows and saw your figure. You had a mask over your head before you sprinted towards her and tried to fight against her.
''Guys, a little help here,'' Yelena responded in her ear as Katy shot an arrow. The arrow light up a bright light which made you cover your ears as the two of you flew away. You let out a grunt as you drew out your knife and looked at her.
Her eyes widened when he saw the mark on your shoulder. She recognized the mark because she was the one who gave it to you when you were younger. ''Y/n?'' She asked, surprised.
You sprinted towards her as you began to attack her. However, before you could stab her, Shang-chi blasted his ten rings towards you and sent you across from her. Yelena looked at him before she ran towards you.
You let out a grunt when you tried to free from her grasp around your neck. She gripped your head and took away the mask from your head. Your hands went towards her neck as you shocked her.
You breathed heavily as you turned around and saw Yelena looking at you. ''Y/n?'' The boy in front of you commented. your eyes drifted towards him and you froze.
Those familiar eyes that haunted you were in front of you. Yelena looked at him and she knew that he must've known you too. ''Y/n, it's me,'' Shang-chi replied.
That little voice inside of your head begged you to stay. Begged you to stay with him. But you knew that you didn't have a choice. He betrayed you.
Your eyes trailed down to his arms and you could see the rings glowing. A dark look beamed on your face. Before you could do anything more, Katy appeared from nowhere and aimed her bow towards you. Your eyes met her and she was afraid but you knew that she didn't have the gut to kill you.
You shook your head towards her and when Sam and Bucky entered, You disappeared without a trace. ''Who the hell is she?'' Katy asked them as Yelena and Shang-chi met each other eyes. ''You don't wanna know.''

Squid Games (Marvel/Squid Games x reader crossover)
A/N: Had this fun little idea after watching squid games. Kinda toyed with the plot a bit, but overall a good base line :)
TW: Swearing, violence, blood
Summary: After being sent to Korea on a solo mission to take down a game hosted by black market sponsors, the Avenger's tune in to why you've been away from the compound for 3 days. At Fury's discretion, of course. Things go south when you're being targeted by some past men who worked by Xu Wenwu. It's your mission to stay alive and take out his men.
The meeting room was silent as Fury's voice echoed through the room. The air was thick.
"Three days? You waited to tell us this for 3 DAYS?" Tony's voice questioned across the room, slamming the table with his hands. Natasha stared at the table, face blank. Thor and Loki had a puzzled look on their face.
"Please forgive me, but what do you mortals call a "Squid Game"?" Loki's voice drawled through the room as all eyes were drawn to the Asgardian.
Fury looked over at Shang-Chi and nodded. His expression was un-readable and glued to the floor, not daring to look up at his new team mates.
"It's an unspoken organization in Korea, and every year they host a game. People who are neck deep in debt are offered a cash reward to participate and play games. It's..black market, dark web stuff."
This further confused the group as a whole, all except for Natasha. She had heard talk of the game on various solo missions with Barton. Xu Xialing spoke up, irritated with her brother's explanation.
"It's life or death. People go and never come back. Nobody has ever been able to trace them or track them down. Similar to how people bet on horses, very wealthy sponsors bet on players."
"They pick their players based on their role to society. Most who participate are poor or homeless people with nothing to go back to."
Realization fell onto their faces as they looked at your empty chair. Just 4 days ago you'd be laughing and telling them how stupid it is.
"Why send her? To go undercover? ALONE? Do you have any idea what we are dealing with?" Nat questioned, distain written on her faces. Fury's stoic expression didn't falter.
"We needed someone to go undercover. Her talents and skills was most compatible for the mission. I don't need you questioning my authority, Romanoff," He said sternly, causing her to clench her jaw.
"Luckily, we planted multiple cameras and microphones on her to bug the place. The reason you are all here is so Tony can connect with the cameras. Undetected."
Their stomachs turned with anxiety as Tony frantically started tapping away on his holographic screen.
"We should be live," He trailed off, in concentration. "Now."
Suddenly you appeared on multiple monitors, from different angles. The team collectively sighed in relief at the sight of you. It was before the first game, and you were sitting in your teal uniform.
"109..how many players are there?" Bucky read, watching you fiddle with your zipper. He knew you always did that when you were anxious.
"Too many." Fury said, shaking his head. "The plan is to track wherever the signal is coming from and take it down from the inside. That's where all of you come into play. There's been a tip that some of your father's men are there," He said, looking directly at the siblings. Their faces tightened. That man still had so many connections, even being dead. As soon they took down 3, another 5 resurfaced days later terrorizing cities across the world.
"But first we need some more information from the inside. The plan is to leave first thing tonight, after the first game. Hopefully, giving us the proof we'll need."
Everyone's eyes stayed glued on the screen as they watched you walk through the maze of corridors, to finally enter a playing field. It was about two football field's length, with a large doll at the end facing backwards. It over towered the players, making them grow nervous.
"The hell is that thing?' You mumbled, scrunching your eyebrows.
"Yeah," Sam scoffed. "That's not creepy at all." Natasha rolled her eyes in annoyance.
You scanned the room to anyone who could pose a threat, but to you everyone looked equally as confused. It was hard to tell who was out of place. Fury had prefaced the very little information on what exactly you were walking into, which is unfortunately right up your alley.
Find the men. Get as much as you can on camera. Stay alive and don't do anything stupid. Of course, you were already on a private jet in the middle of the night so it didn't seem you had much of a choice.
There was no way to communicate with Fury or the team, all you were told to do is catch as much on video as you can. The men in the red suits were intimidating to say the least, as they all wore masks with different shapes. Some holding assault rifles, others holding batons.
"I think the shape on their masks is some kind of rank," You whispered, just loudly enough so the mic would pick it up. They had taken all of your belongings, except for the pieces you hid in your glasses and your hair. Tony never seemed to fail to impress you with all the ways he could disguise an ear pieces and mics.
"You will be playing 'Red Light, Green Light'." A voice announced over the field, making you chuckle.
"Seriously, Fury? You sent me to play a bunch of kid games?" She mumbled, rolling her eyes.
"I don't get it, she's just going to play a game? This is why she's been gone?" Steve asks, rubbing his chin out of confusion.
Fury is silent, his eyes staying on the screen.
5 minutes displayed on the clock, her eyes darting to them quick. There were a few people in front of her, a blonde boy and a brunette boy jostling each other around.
"Green light!" The doll said, turning its massive head around to face a fake tree.
The boys laughed, running forward. You rolled your eyes, jogging behind them but keeping your distance.
"Red light!" The doll's head swiveled around, making you stop in your tracks.
The team was silent, watching intently. The two boys in front of you had stopped as well, but the blonde stumbled to keep his balanced.
The doll's eyes eyes quickly shifted toward him, and a gunshot rang out into the air making the hairs on the back of your neck stick up. His body fell limp to the ground, leaving you frozen in your tracks.
"Did he just.." Steve started to say, but his voice trailed off. Everyone's faced painted with horror, slowly putting the pieces together in their heads.
The color in Wanda's face slowly disappeared as Vison reached for her hand in comfort.
"(Y/N)..Don't move.." Loki whispered to himself, knowing he couldn't hear you.
"Oh no.." You whispered, tears gathering in your eyes. The fear in your voice filled the room
The doll's head turned back towards the tree.
"Green light."
You walk forward slowly, keeping your expression stoic. You scan the crowd as see two men at both sides of you a couple feet behind, glaring.
They found you.
Your eyes shift to the boy on the ground, not far away from you. His mouth spurts out some blood on the ground, making you gasp quietly in horror.
You stare down leave the one to your left from the corner of your eye. The stare he was giving you was much like a predator looking at it's prey.
"Red light!"
You stop in your tracks again, staring straight ahead of you. The boy sees his friend, and lets out a shaken gasp as he goes to run away. Bullets fly through the air, making his body fall limp.
The blood splatters on the face of another player, falling at her feet.
"I have eyes," You whisper carefully, not daring to move your body.
"I see them," Wanda says, pointing a finger to the men getting ready to pounce.
"They found her in there." Xu Xialing says, her body tense. "They're going to sabotage her and get her killed."
"Then what are we standing around waiting for exactly? Fury?" Tony asks with irritation, the fear flowing through his veins as the massacre about to unfold in front of his team.
Are they just supposed to watch a body cam of you getting murdered?
You weren't the teams baby, they knew you could fend for yourself. You were easily one of the strongest amongst the team, hand to hand combat being your weak spot.
They couldn't help but be protective of you, coming from a background of pretty much raising yourself. Tony obviously viewing you as a daughter, to see you fighting for your life, on your own, boiled his blood.
Along with the rest of his team mates, he felt helpless.
"The more you beg for money, the easier this should be." He commented, watching you stick the surveillance pieces in your hair.
"You wouldn't be able to hear us but we'll be able to hear you," He explains, pacing the cabin.
"If things go south I have Strange on stand-by. Xu Wenwu's men are ruthless, hopefully you've been working on your combat."
You laugh, fixing your clothes as they were dirtied and holed.
"Natasha and Steve haven't been taking it easy on me if that's what you're asking." You quipped, earning a half smile from your superior.
As the jet began to land, he grabbed you by the forearm.
"Please stay alive," He spoke. "I haven't told the team where you're going to be until you're actually playing. I don't need to be on Stark's shit list twice."
You rolled your eyes. "I can do this fury,"
"Have a little faith." You winked, exiting the jet to camp out at the nearest train station.
After a day of playing your role as a homeless woman, it brought back memories of when you survived on your own in the streets of San Francisco. It was no mind or challenge really, you enjoyed being alone. But what you didn't enjoy were the creepy old men offering you a place to stay if you gave them a little 'something' in return.
You'd silently hoped Bucky was watching, knowing the jealous look that would overtake his face.
Your thoughts were ripped away as a very attractive business man came and set next to you on the bench.
"Hello," He said, flashing a smile your way.
'Showtime' you thought to yourself.
"H-Hello.." You stuttered back in a soft voice, unable to meet his eyes.
"May I show you something?" He asks kindly, setting the briefcase in between the two of you.
"If you're selling something..I'm sorry but I'm not interested." You glance at his intimidating stare, captivated by his brown eyes.
He opened the case to reveal what'd you'd assume to be a very large amount of money, and two stacks of paper squares. Red and blue.
"You've played Ddajiki before, yes?" He questioned, holding up the squares.
You nodded, remembering the files of Korean games you studied on the plane prior to your arrival.
He hummed in approval. "Play Ddajiki with me. I will give you 100,000 won every time you win."
You pursed your lips in thought. To really play the part, Fury sent absolutely no money with you. What happens if you loose?
"However," He said, making your eyes connect with his once more.
"Every time I win, you will give me 100,000 won."
Shit. That's right. No money.
"You can start first," He said, grazing a hand across your face ever so slightly in hopes to convince you.
You felt frozen in your seat, and the only thoughts you could think of was Bucky going ballistic watch this man to lure you in.
You nodded, grabbing the blue envelope from his smooth hands.
Blue was Bucky's favorite color, after all.
When you had lost the first time, making your blood run cold. He effortlessly had flipped over your square, smirking in victory. He looked at you expectantly.
"Don't you have any money?" He questioned, stepping closer to you.
You were at a loss for words. This man's intimidation reminded you of Loki's. This stare being able to capture a picture in a still frame, it's contents not moving out of fear.
"I..I.." You scrambled for words. You squeezed your fists in case he tried to have a go at you. But before you could blink, a sharp pain collided with your cheek, making your head whip to the side. Your feet stayed planted on the ground. Natasha's number one rule.
Always be grounded.
"Play again?" He asks, making the anger in your body rush to your cheeks. You nodded curtly.
After a few more slaps, you started to get the hang of it.
Finally, you had flipped the red square over, yelping in victory.
The frustration slap after slap built in your bones, and as soon as the square flipped your hand flew through the air to meet his face.
It didn't.
He caught your arm with eyes, peering down at you with the smile that never seemed to have leave his face.
He put your arm down gently, never letting go, as he put 100,000 won in your hand.
The breath was hitched in your throat, watching his every move.
"Congratulations," He whispers, closing your hand around the money.
"If you want to win more," He continues, stepping away to close his briefcase. "Call this number."
He hands you a black business card with a number on it. You swallowed and nodded, taking a step backwards.
He simply winks and enters the train that had just arrived, gone in a flash.
Before you knew it, you were in a dark SUV being filled with gas. What the hell were you getting in to?"
"She's going to make it through the first game. After that is when we attack. We stick to MY plan Stark," HIs voice warned, booming through the room.
Their eyes drifted back to the screen, all of them holding their breaths in hope you don't move a muscle.
The woman felt the blood on her face and in her hands, screaming at the sight of it. A single bullet whizzed through her head, making her body drop on top of the boy who had just been shot.
Bullets started firing as people ran towards the back, clawing at the gate to escape. The dolls eyes were going crazy, shooting anything with movement.
"Don't fucking move (Y/N).." Bucky mumbled, clenching his iron fist.
Your camera shown you getting tackled to the side, as one of Xu Wenwu's men face.
"We knew SHIELD would send yo-" He growled, a gunshot piercing through his head, his body falling on top of you.
"With that, let the game resume." The doll spoke, its head turning back around.
You started to hyperventilate, blood covering your hair, face, and chest.
"Fuck..Oh fuck.." You said out loud, struggling to get the body off of you.
"Green light!"
Everyone stood frozen, all except an old man who walked forward with a daring smile. You stared at him in confusion, until your eyes drifted over to three men across the room glaring daggers at you.
They were far away enough to where they couldn't touch you.
Not yet, at least.
"There's more," You whispered, eyes bouncing back and forth between the men and the dead one laying on top of you.
"Can't we talk to her? Does she have an ear piece?" Banner finally choked out, being silent almost the entire time.
He shook his head. "We couldn't. We were already taking a risk with the cameras and mics."
Loki grumbled, glancing at the displeased face on his brother. Thor's fists were clenched on his lap, light sparks emitting from his knuckles. The duo was quite fond of you, they even considered you to be their best friend. Or, 'Brothers from another mother' is how you'd put it. They were confident you could hold your own, but it still worried them to be somewhere where they couldn't fight by your side.
Bucky's stomach was in knots. It had been a slow burn between you and him, neither one of you having the courage to confess your feelings to one another. He hated seeing you in danger, and he feared not being able to save you.
Steve and Sam were silent, constantly looking at Bucky. The whole team teased you two about your flirting, but it was him and Sam who knew the real feelings he had for you.
Nat and Wanda also knew how you felt about him, talking about it with them on many occasions. Usually on your wine and movie nights, which were EVERY Wednesday. Now they're having to watch you play a nightmare of a game with your life at risk.
The rest of the team watched as anticipation as you played the game, with people trying to get you killed on purpose.
"Red light!"
Your eyes scanned the hundreds of dead bodies on the floor. Men. Women. Mothers. Fathers. People who had families.
Your eyes shifted back to the old man, stopping at a halt.
He froze, the devilish smile never leaving his face.
The team watched with a shocked expression to see a man so aged playing this game.
"He must have nothing to lose," Nat commented, folding her fingers.
"He's the only one moving."
Fury's expression never faltered. "This game requires strategy. Planning out your every breath. Hopefully now you see why I picked Agent (Y/L/N),"
His face scanned the group with a disapproving look in his eye.
"Have some faith."
The team was silent.
Your eyes drifted over to the men again, who were boring holes in your head with their evil stares. You narrowed your eyes, almost challenging them.
"Green light!"
They stayed in their spot as the old man moved forward, their expression never leaving their face. You remembered the dead weight crushing you, and you had to get him off. And fast.
Glancing down, another large man was on top of the one who was trying to kill you. Also dead.
"Red light!"
He froze again, now in front of all the remaining players too frightened to move.
You needed to act fast. And quick. Your palms started to sweat and chills ran down your back. You knew one wrong move and your life is over in a second.
You thought about the team and the memories you shared, which was quickly consumed by Bucky. You needed to make it out alive.
The comfort you felt by the mere thought of him overcame your body like a typhoon.
"What the hell would Bucky say to you right now?" You mumbled out loud. The team heard the shakiness of your voice, fighting tears.
You remembered right then he was probably watching. And could hear you. The adrenaline in your veins didn't even care.
Bucky's face softened at the way his name rolled off your tongue, making his heart leap.
The team looked at him, his eyes hard as he watched the screen of you. Scared. Shaking.
Sam put a comforting hand on his shoulder, his eyes never leaving the screen.
"Probably something along the lines of 'Don't show them weakness. Stop acting like a pussy. Kick their fucking asses. I don't know." You mumbled, trying to think of a plan.
"She's right, you know." Sam commented, offering a half smile. A ghost of a chuckle emitted from the team.
"Green light!"
You quickly struggled to shove the dead weight of the two men double your size off of you, until a man came helped push them off of you, pulling you to your feet.
"Red light!"
You froze looking at the man who had just helped you, eyes wide in fear. His jacket read #456.
"Thank you," You whispered softly, and the team watched in shock. Bucky's shoulders tensed as he gave you a sweet smile back in return.
Your eyes drifted next to his head, to the men who had gotten closer to you two. Your face fell, making the man scrunch his eyebrows in confusion.
"Green light!"
"We need to go. NOW." You said loudly, running with him at the sound of the doll's head turning.
You switched sides with him, being closer to the henchmen. There is no way you'd let some kind man be in the crossfire of why you're there in the first place.
Their smirks grew at the sight of you becoming closer, them catching up to you quickly.
You dropped your speed, making sure the player who helped you was safe.
"Red light!"
By this time now, you were a few feet in front of the men after you. Your body shook with nerves. You felt hot and cold at the same time.
"We got you now, Doll." He growled as you rolled your eyes.
"There's only one person who gets to call me that," You called back, not moving a muscle as the doll scanned the crowd of people.
Bodies dropped and you flinched as bullets flew through the air, passing your head.
Bucky's cheeks heated up as Strange walked through the door, with Wong on his tail. All of the team turned to look at him. All except Bucky, of course.
"How's she doing?" He asked in a monotone voice
"Still alive, like I've been trying to tell them." Fury responded with annoyance. "About time you got here."
"You know I protect multiple universes and timelines, you know that right? Anyways, when are we doing this? My men are on stand-by." He motioned over to Wong, who had walked up to Shang-Chi and Xu Xialing.
"When she finishes the first game. 2 minutes left." He responded, turning his attention back to the monitor.
"Green light!"
Your breath became shallow as the men attacked you from behind, and you immediately flip one over your shoulder. With a swift kick to the face you knock him out, you spin around quickly to deliver a swift punch to his stomach. Kicking his side he gives you a right hook to the cheek, knocking you to the ground.
"Red light!"
You freeze, the three men towering over you.
"Fuck.." Tony shakes his head, running his hands over his face. The team is on the edge of their seats, watching with anticipation.
Nat's eyes are glued to the screen, mapping out exactly how she'd want you to take them out. Just like she had trained you. And much to your surprise, you did effortlessly.
"Green light!" With a swift sweep kick under the legs you knock the man off his feet, your elbow meeting the other man's nose.
"That's my girl!" Natasha yelled out like a proud aunt, fist bumping the air.
Player 456 glanced back and watched in awe, as his friend with glasses tugged his sleeve.
The small girl that was pinned under two dead man is now kicking 3 of their asses who are alive.
"Gi-Hun! We have to go now! Forget about her!" He yelled, running with his friend.
With one final grunt, you kicked the man on the ground in the nose as hard as you could while then quickly head butting the man in front of you, knocking him out cold. You sprint on your feet, catching up to the man who graciously saved you.
Glancing back you see the men try to get up and stumble, just as the doll's head turns towards them.
"Red light!"
Their bodies fall to the ground with a thud, gunshots ringing through the air. As you froze you felt the blood dripping out of your nostrils.
"I think I broke my nose," You whimper, the two men on your side hearing you.
"What the hell was that? Are you okay?" He whispers, not daring to move his head. You don't respond, trying to regain your bearings.
"Damn," Sam commented.
"She did head butt him quite hard," Wanda commented, a proud tone coming from her voice.
"Just make it to the end, (Y/N).." Loki said, making Thor glance at him. He could of swore he saw worry on his brothers usual stone cold expression. He made a mental note to tease him later.
"Green light!"
The more you ran, the more your breath felt labored. You just wanted this to be over. No amount of money is worth whatever game this is. And whoever is betting on these people are sick and twisted in the fucking head.
The more bodies started to drop, the more your adrenaline did most of the work. You were painted with blood, and stained with memories that would never escape your head.
"Red light!"
You stopped at a woman's body, whose eyes were staring blankly into your lively ones. The image haunted you as the hole in the middle of her forehead was oozing blood.
This was the first time Bucky looked away from the screen, as well as most of the team. This was horrifying to watch, let alone participate in.
"I never thought it was real," Shang-Chi admitted. His sister nodded in agreement.
"It was always a thing talked about our entire lives growing up, a scary story used to tell your friends.."
"It's a good thing we're putting an end to it then." Steve spoke, slowly looking back to the monitor.
"Green light!"
By this time you weren't far from the finish line, making you sweat. There were other players screaming from the other side to run, and as much as your legs burned you didn't stop.
You ran behind player 456, his chest panting from exhausted breaths. You're both almost there. Yet so far away.
"COME ON (Y/N)!" Thor yells, startling everyone. Everyone starts cheering in desperation, as if they could hear her through the monitor.
As he's running, his foot slips on a dead man's arm on the ground making him loose his balance.
"Red Light!"
Without thinking, you quickly extend your hand and grab his jacket, freezing your position. You were holding him, his nose inches from the dirt on the ground.
He gasps, his hands not moving in the air as the doll scans the crowd once again. His eyes drift up to the timer.
"15 seconds," Tony chokes out, his hands gripping the table until his knuckles turn white. "God damn it, (Y/N).."
Of course you'd save someone any chance you could. You'd put down your life before anybody's if it meant sparing them. It's the good in you.
The avengers sat silent in the room, praying to any god that was in or out of the room you didn't drop the man you were holding.
Who was twice your size.
Your arms started to burn as well as your eyes, as you grunt in pain. Blood was still slowly pouring out of your nose, making you dizzy.
The team watched you, covered in blood, holding onto the players jacket for dear life.
You closed your eyes and focused, zoning in on the thought of reuniting with Bucky again. Grounding you to your surroundings.
His warmth. His smell. His voice. His embrace wrapping you like nothing would ever harm you. You loved how you felt when you were with him. How he made you feel. The version of you that comes out when he's in the room makes you happy.
And if you were going to tell him that, you needed to be alive to do it.
"Green light!"
Your eyes snap open as player 456 scrambles to his feet rushing to the finish line.
"5 seconds.." Wanda says with panic, standing on her feet.
You ran as fast as you could, tears clouding your vision. The pain in your chest was numb as your body heaved with every second that passed.
As the doll's head turned its head one final time, you hurled yourself over the finish line just as the clock strikes zero, player #456 landing at your side.
"YES!" Tony yelled, jumping to his feet. The group yelled in delight as you reached the finish line, some shedding happy tears and hugs. You had survived even with people attempting to sabotage the game.
Fury had a proud smile crawl across his face, as Strange rolled his eyes. He knew you were going to make it anyways.
You coughed, rolling on your back. You sat up, angling the camera at the field so it could capture the last massacre of resining players. You closed your eyes, not wanting to see more innocent lives to be taken.
"Are you okay?" A voice said, making you open your (Y/E/C) eyes. It was the man who had saved you, and you saved him.
You stuttered for words, unsure of what to say trying to overcome the shock of the events that had taken places.
"Y-Yeah, I'm good. Are you..?" You trailed off, unsure of what to say. He nodded, his eyebrows stitched in concern.
"Your nose, it's bleeding.." He pointed out, which then you took this opportunity to touch your nose. He was right, it was bleeding. There was a lot of blood on your originally white shirt, it was unclear if it was yours or someone else's. You shrugged.
"Thank you for helping me," You said, touching his shoulder with a smile. His eyes widened in a incredulous manner.
"Thank me? Thank YOU! I don't know how you managed to hold me! That was amazing!" He gushed, shaking you by the hand. You glanced up to see his friend giving you an apologetic smile.
"Really, it's no problem. I had no idea what I was walking into.." You said, emphasizing the last part of your sentence in hopes Fury was listening in.
Relief washed over the team as you chatted with the man, him thanking you profusely. The only thought in their mind was to take down the assholes who run this shitshow. Nat couldn't stop saying how proud she was of you, using all the moves she'd been working on with you for weeks now.
Loki and Thor were impressed and equally happy you had managed to fight assassins trying to compromise your ability to make it to the end of the game.
Cutting the small talk off in a fuss, Fury quickly explained the plain to ambush the facility to the team, one of the main goals is to get you out alive and seek medical attention.
The team suited up as the monitor showed you going back to the area you had woken up in.
"Gi-Hun," The man said, approaching you at your bunk as you tried to clean up the blood on your nose.
"I'm sorry?" You responded, not being able to hear well. With all the gunshots, you weren't able to hear much without a constant ringing.
"Gi-Hun is my name," He said a bit louder, taking a seat next to you. You smiled. He seemed to be a man you could trust, but you were strictly told to stay with your undercover identity.
"(Y/F/N)," You responded with you fake name, shaking his hand.
"Sorry. Can't hear much since the last game." You replied, shaking your head.
He chuckled. "I don't think any of us can,"
"Why are you here?" He questioned with kind eyes, having trouble how someone young like you ended up in this madness.
"Homeless. No family. No husband or boyfriend. No kids." You responded shortly, your gaze drifting into the middle of the floor. Your eyes scanned the guards who stood in front of the door, tuning out whatever Gi-Hun was saying.
They should be here any minute now.
You grew anxious, wanting this to all be over. Be back in your bed. Or Bucky's arms.
Just then a spark started to omit from the middle of the room, which the guards noticed immediately, calling for back up.
"I'm sorry, but I have to go. I hope everything works out. Thank you again," You interrupted Gi-Hun who nodded with furrowed eyebrows, until his gaze was covered in confusion when he saw the sparks himself.
Careful not to blow your cover, you stood by the bunks to observe 2 waves of soldiers come out of the doors.
Shit.
Shortly after Steve, Tony, Wanda, and Shang-Chi walked through the portal, it quickly shutting behind them.
"Weapons down, and nobody gets hurt."
Tony's voice is like music to your ears, a wave of comfort overflowing your body.
You knew they'd come for you, but the anxiety in your head tried convincing you otherwise.
A smile creeped on your face, but quickly dropped as the weapons were aimed in unison at your friends.
"Wanda, NOW!" Steve yelled, throwing his shield and knocking with weapons out of a group of the guards. Tony and Shang-Chi start to fight the guards, as more flood the room. She quickly casts a shield over the players, scrunching her face in focus.
"Everyone stay where you are!" She yells to the players, scanning the crowd until her eyes fall onto you. You smile, running up to her.
"You guys came for me!" You say, blood covering your exhausted face.
"Of course we did! Go help them kick ass!" She giggles, keeping the shield on the players while also taking out guards.
The rest of the team are through out the building, basically taking down the operation on the inside with Strange and Wong. They found the game manager and held in in restraints as the sponsors were caught and identified one by one.
You quickly run over and start fighting the guards one after one, with poor combat skills. Suddenly you're back to back with Steve, fighting off a large group of guards.
"It's good to see you Cap," You yell, shooting two pistols you had picked up off the ground. "But I'm ready to go home."
"What? Not having fun? We were going to red rover next," He says jokingly as we slowly start to decrease the number of guards until there were none.
Panting, you put your hands on your knees as Wanda drops the shield and asks if everyone is okay.
"(Y/N)!" Tony yells, his face shield retracting in his suit to reveal his face. You sigh with relief and hug him tightly, his chin resting on your head.
"I'm glad you're okay," He grumbles as the rest of the team flows in to check for injures with any of the players.
You tear yourself away from him and give him thankful eyes, until your gaze meets Bucky's. Butterflies swirl in your stomach and your heart pounds in your ears as your legs carry you into his embrace.
"You did so good Doll," He whispers, peppering your blood stained hair with kisses.
"I missed you Bucky," You say, hugging him for dear life. "So much."
You look up into his gorgeous eyes, his pained expression scanning your face. Your face was bruised and bloody. But it didn't make you appear any less beautiful.
"Stop acting like a pussy and kick their asses huh?" He muses, his eyes darting between your eyes and lips.
If there was anytime you should do it, it should be now. You glance down at his lips, and back into his eyes.
Without thinking your lips meet, moving in unison. Fireworks spread from your chest down into your stomach, his hands tangling into your hair. He kissed you like it was his last breath before going underwater, filled with passion and love.
"You have no idea," You panted, out of breath. "How long I've wanted you to do that."

~ One week later ~
Something fluttered in her belly once the warmth from the sun was tingling, reminding her that Y/N was on the brink of awakening.
But a part of her wanted to stay blissfully in that dream. She barely remembered what had happened, only that someone was pleasuring her wet heat.
Y/N believed it was Shaun who was performing some oral ‘loving’ − God, how cheesy did that sound? − it would've been pretty weird if it wasn’t him.
She moaned under her breath and leaned her head back. Her hips moved to the rhythm, craving Shaun’s mouth in her dream. Disappointment followed when she opened her eyes and gasped out loud. Y/N hated that she was taken out of that slumber all so suddenly.
“Oh my God.” Instinctively, her fingers stroked Shaun’s hair, needing to feel his mouth even closer.
“You taste fucking delicious,” a husky voice mumbled between her legs.
A heavy weight was settled right between them while the heat of Shaun’s body made her stomach tingle. Y/N was smiling contentedly while she felt the sheets rustle over her legs and slightly pushed them down until Shaun’s dark hair made an appearance. A salacious smirk met her while he licked her clit with vigor. The darkness in his eyes revealed how aroused he truly was from pleasuring her.
“Well, good morning to you too,” Y/N purred and grinded her hips to feel him even deeper. She had lost all inhibitions and craved to get what she wanted from Shaun until her cum would trickle all over his face.
Shaun hummed with a low voice. “Hmm, good morning, beautiful.”
His tongue was swirling in circles on her swollen nub, letting heat slowly overwhelm her while Shaun was staring with hypnotizing dark eyes.
Y/N’s fingers clenched in his hair with the sucking sounds taking over the bedroom.
“Oh, just keep going. I’m so close,” she gasped.
Taking that as incentive, Shaun pushed her legs higher until they rested on his broad shoulders.
That was always something that fascinated her about him. How there was more to him than met the eye. Until he would take off his clothes and reveal the true extent of his muscles on that body.
Y/N’s thighs clenched tighter around the sides of his head, and she felt almost afraid of choking him.
That didn’t deter him at all while his fingers held tight onto her upper thighs, keeping her close. His mouth remained fused to her pussy as a deep groan left his lips.
“Don’t you dare move.”
Those vibrations against her pulsating heat and Shaun’s quick tongue going in rhythmic circles made her gasp out loud. She was breathing heavily with every stroke while he tried to chase her orgasm.
Soon enough, Shaun inserted his fingers into her tight channel while he licked with hungry obsession.
Soreness tugged low in her core. A whimpering noise echoed from her lips before Y/N tried to pull back, feeling far too sensitive already.
“Don’t move,” he reminded her darkly.
Shaun would have none of it as his fingers clenched around her thighs, needing her close until she would see black spots from the intensity and Shaun’s dominance.
Y/N’s thighs quivered with the rush of ecstasy taking over her body and heat filled her completely. Shaun lapped up the pooling liquid like a man starved and grunted from the taste.
Her muscles were still spasming before she felt herself relax deep in her bones.
“Oh wow,” she murmured and absentmindedly dried the heat settling on her forehead. “What kind of cardio was that even?” She swallowed thickly as soon as she was breathing normally again.
Shaun chuckled under his breath and let his kisses brush against her inner thigh. “It was my pleasure.” His body slowly crept up her body while his mouth explored it as he went and snuggled at her back.
Strong arms stroked against the skin of her stomach underneath an old shirt she had borrowed from her boyfriend- or … Shaun. Whatever they were.
And just like that, everything tingled from his mere touch while his lips briefly brushed against her neck.
“I don’t think I like you wearing my shirt, Y/N.”
The sudden change of subject prompted her to turn her head to glance backwards at him. The serious tone in his voice was in contrast to the light humor in his brown eyes.
“Uh huh?”
“In fact,” Shaun’s fingers dragged the fabric higher inch by inch to uncover Y/N’s naked skin to his eyes as they grew darker with dangerous heat, “I think we should take it off.” He was all about the suspense when his face inched closer to hers with dark intent.
Not able to take it any longer, Y/N placed her hand against the back of his neck and yanked him towards her until his soft lips brushed against hers. A moan left her as soon as Shaun kissed her with a greedy passion, tasting herself on his lips. Rocking his pelvis against her core, Y/N could feel his hardness probing her dripping heat. The coldness of his amulet settled on her heaving chest and cooled the heat of her body.
Y/N groaned at the feel of Shaun’s tongue exploring the depths of her mouth while her fingers stroked his naked shoulder, getting to know him all over again after last night.
It had been kind of intense and set her whole body on fire while the tips of her fingers had admired the taut muscles of his abdomen, rendering her a salivating mess. A shuddering sigh wreaked through Shaun’s body when she felt a few elevations on his skin that resembled small scars.
Shaun was breathing heavily and let hot air exhale against Y/N’s lips as his face was inches away from hers. His eyes roamed over her body in a mysterious air that rendered her speechless.
“You drive me crazy.”
Y/N’s fingers were softly – almost distractedly – stroking the hair at the back of Shaun’s neck. “I seem to recall you saying that last night as well,” she whispered seductively.
Shaun smirked. “And I remember you calling me ‘God’ a lot.”
Y/N rolled her eyes. “You’re lucky you’re cute.”
“Oh, am I?” His lips met hers in a soft caress, like some sort of good-morning kiss.
Humming low under her breath, Y/N couldn’t help wondering if she could remain in his arms and forget the world around them.
“What are you thinking?”
“You,” Y/N replied in an honest whisper, almost too scared to say it out loud. Like it was a secret just between them. “How much I like this.” She stroked his shoulders, enjoying the smooth sensation of his skin.
“Me too.” Shaun’s features appeared all soft as he asked in a murmur, “Are you hungry?”
Her eyes wandered over to his lips before she nodded mutely. “I could eat something,” she whispered.
“See you later, babe. Going over to Katy’s,” Shaun whispered against her lips in between soft kisses, letting warm air puff against her skin. “Miss you already.”
Y/N chuckled, but still sighed with the brief touches. “See you later, dork.” She pressed her lips together and stepped away from him with regret, loving the taste on her lips.
The flavor of boba was starting to become a distinct scent she would always associate with Shaun. He was secretly going to wreck her for any other guy.
“Now leave before I change my mind.” Despite knowing how candidly she truly meant it, she nudged him away to get rid of the temptation altogether.
Shaun put his hands in his pockets and revealed a pleased smile on his face. “Okay. I’ll see you.”
Y/N raised her eyebrows at his adorable antics. “Now go.”
He sent her a glance from under his eyelashes that made her reconsider her choice before he took over. “Okay, don’t have too much fun without me.”
Rolling her eyes, Y/N turned around and called over her shoulder, “No promises.” She was chuckling under her breath as she strolled in the other direction, hearing his footsteps recede in the distance with every step.
Y/N had just walked a few blocks down the sidewalk when the back of her neck was tingling with an uncomfortable sensation. A contemplative frown took over her features, forcing her to halt in her steps.
“He’s cute, you know.”
That voice. Instantly, Y/N felt her stomach drop as that familiarity hit, and the painful memories resurfaced. Not intending to go down that rabbit hole, Y/N kept walking and pretended like she hadn’t heard a thing.
The blonde assassin had no issue keeping up with her as she hurried to her side. “Oh, come on, just admit that you missed me,” she teased next to her.
Aggravation was shining in her eyes when they lingered on the familiar face. “I don’t have time for your games, Yelena.”
The Russian woman lifted her arms in mock surrender. “No games, promise. Just another Widow wanting to get reacquainted.”
Y/N snorted, as she refused to believe Yelena’s sudden innocent nature. The blonde woman might have her sentimental moments, but she shied away from showing it.
“Okay, that’s a lie, you caught me. You know after all this time, you’re still one of few people who could see right through me.”
All of a sudden, Y/N stopped in her tracks and let her hands splay on her hips. “What do you want?” she asked with determination.
As Yelena pursed her lips and tilted her head, a certain glint shone in her green eyes. “Maybe we could try one of American customs? Have brunch together?”
Y/N pretended like she was letting it go through her head. “I already had breakfast. Maybe next time, in another life, maybe.” She hoped Yelena would take the hint as she kept walking.
Her presence lingered steps away like a haunting memory she tried to leave behind.
“You made a promise, remember.”
The younger assassin’s resolute voice evoked a clenching sensation low in her stomach. Y/N clenched her jaw before she slowly turned around and for the first time took the time to truly look at her.
Since the last time she had seen her in the Red Room, there was something different about her. Her blonde tresses were tied in a messy ponytail and the tips of her hair fell in waves down her shoulders. Judging by her clothes - dark leather jacket over her dark green blouse which complimented her torn jeans, Yelena was growing into her own self.
It truly made Y/N realize what they all had been through and that they needed pieces of normalcy that reflected they were their own person again. That no one would ever control their beings ever again.
But there was something else. Something that was simmering under the surface.
“Why did I have a feeling you would throw that in my face?” Y/N inquired with a weariness in her voice.
“I’m not above fighting dirty if I have to,” Yelena muttered in her accented voice.
As much as Y/N hated her manipulation tactics, Yelena’s usage of them made her stop short and swallow. If the younger woman had it her way, she’d probably have the audacity to reveal herself to Shaun - or even worse - if she felt pushed into a corner.
Y/N placed a small smirk on her face. “But I guess there’s brunch for a reason, am I right?”
Yelena smiled at her approving words. “I so love when you see things my way.”
“Oh my God,” Yelena moaned loudly and closed her eyes in bliss.
One would think Yelena hadn’t eaten in decades, the way she was stuffing her face with pancakes.
A small part of her was staring in amusement while being conscious of the stares of the other guests.
“Those are some delicious pancakes. You want to try?”
“No, thank you.” Y/N smiled briefly while she was taking her time enjoying her cold beverage.
Perceptive green eyes followed Y/N stirring the blue drink. “Seems we both are craving small comforts, right? What’d you call it again?”
Y/N’s gaze turned soft, as much as she tried not to let her get to her. “Sago’t Gulaman.” She nodded once and whispered in agreement. “Small comforts.”
Yelena’s shifted around, like she was taking in her surroundings for the first time.
As if.
“You and your boyfriend go here a lot?”
Y/N sent her a look not to go there. “As if you don’t already know.”
Yelena shrugged. “I just think it’s nice. Going out, enjoying foods and drinks from your home.”
Y/N was watching her in consideration at her words. “That would require me to have a childhood in the first place,” she negated almost with boredom. The mention of her heritage still put a sour taste in her mouth, as much as she tried to regain her footing by touching on what she had missed. What the Red Room had done to all of them couldn’t be easily forgotten.
“And he’s not my boyfriend,” she mentioned with heat blossoming in her cheeks.
“Uh huh.” The blonde took a large gulp from her vodka and orange juice with a satisfied sigh. “It’s just … you Americans, and your weird food habits. Like pancakes for brunch? And with Screwdriver even? Who thought, huh? Maybe you really are Russians after all.”
Y/N took the time to glance outside while keeping the exits in her eyesight. “Well, thank God, I’m not an American, right?”
Like a giddy kid, Yelena was smiling with her face still stuffed with food. “Feels like old times, doesn’t it?”
Y/N frowned since Yelena’s memory seemed to differ from hers. “I don’t remember any fun times, not really.”
Yelena rolled her eyes. “You know what I mean. Surveillance, late at night. Just us and other girls.”
“You eating all the foods,” she continued painting the picture for her.
Yelena’s eyes widened. “Exactly.”
“You mean before Dreykov did the mind-meld on us? Those fun times?”
Exhaling heavily, Yelena leaned back in her seat and watched Y/N intensely with considering eyes.
Y/N leaned forward on her crossed arms on the table. “You want something, don’t you? So why don’t we skip the interrogation session covered as a moment of nostalgia, and you just tell me what you want?”
Yelena tilted her head. “What, no pleasantries? And I’m hardly interrogating you, Y/L/N.”
Y/N’s eyes turned serious. “I’m certain. I told you I was out for a reason. That part of my life is over.”
“I know that. And I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t have other choice.”
Y/N nodded her head. There was a part of her that did understand, as much as she foolishly thought she had put the past behind her. “How are the others?”
“I’ve woken some of them by now.”
Y/N inhaled deeply, knowing how much this meant to Yelena, as it did to her. They were all her sisters as well. “Good. They’ve been under the Red Room’s control long enough. It’s time they woke up.”
“But it’s still not enough,” she admitted and averted her eyes. “Don’t make me beg,” she muttered under her breath, like a heavy secret weighing on her.
Y/N crossed her arms. It made her wonder that Yelena asked for help in the first place. “Why now?”
“Something happened to me while I was freeing Ana.” Yelena spoke slowly as she forced the words from her lips like it would free her by confiding in Y/N. “One second, I was right there, and next I blink, the next five years had passed.”
Y/N sighed. Getting dusted was not something she wished on anyone. Except Dreykov - that bastard could rot in hell. But still, Y/N felt for the young Belova.
Abruptly, Yelena’s head whipped in the air before her eyes zeroed in on her. “Do you know what it feels knowing you lost all this time of your life and the next second you find out your own sister died saving the world?”
Y/N had hoped the mention of her sister would follow way later. Or not at all. “I heard what happened to Natasha. I’m sorry.”
Yelena’s blank face saw right through her. “There’s no need to lie.”
“I’m too tired to talk ill of people who are dead. I never hated Romanoff.”
Yelena’s eyebrows rose. “No, you just strongly disliked her.”
Her ears were ringing once her last moment with Natasha came to mind. “She made her choice all those years ago. I was the one who stayed, trying to keep you and everyone else safe from the darkness of the Red Room.”
Yelena’s sudden sentiment of comfort took her by surprise when she covered her hand with hers. The warmth of her skin filled Y/N with a feeling of being home again.
“And you will never know how grateful I am that you did. I just … things are different now and I … never felt more alone than ever. It’s funny how I freed so many Widows, we have this network of female assassins, and I feel so isolated in this world.”
“You aren’t,” Y/N whispered with conviction.
Yelena tilted her head and gazed up at her from under her eyelashes. “So, you will help me?”
“You didn’t have to ask.” Y/N took a sip of her drink. “You know, all these manipulation tactics of yours weren’t even necessary. You shouldn’t have gone for the jugular.”
Looking teary-eyed at Y/N, Yelena replied, “You say, you’re not an American, and you still are sucker for this emotional stuff, admit it. Talking about emotional – how is that hunk of a boyfriend of yours?”
“Could you stop talking about Shaun?”
“Shaun…” Yelena spoke slowly, “He looks … delectable.”
“It’s weird when you’re trying to be a normal girl who’s just talking about boys, Yelena.”
“Does he know?” she whispered ominously and kept her gaze fixed on her while sipping her milkshake through a straw.
Y/N snorted, just imagining that scenario. “How would that conversation even go? ‘Hey, Shaun, listen, looks like I’m a world-class assassin who was trained by the best to manipulate men and kill them without even blinking. What do you want for lunch, babe?’”
The cynic in Yelena made another appearance. “Maybe you’re fooling yourself. A normal life, you think you can have that? How does that work, by the way? He’s in the kitchen, holding a knife in his hands, do you get flashbacks when that happens?”
“Kind of hypocritical to free all those Widows while refusing to believe they can ever be normal again.”
Yelena lifted her palms in the air as an offering. “I’m a deep well.”
“Let’s just get this over with. Where are we going?”
“Bucharest. Home of art and culture,” Yelena admitted.
“Maybe that’s why I’m lone wolf, nothing and no one is holding me back.” Yelena was still proving her sarcastic self and leaned next to the doorjamb while Y/N was trying to unlock the door to Shaun’s apartment.
Without looking at her, Y/N said, “That’s a sad way to live, Yelena,” and finally managed to open the door before she stepped inside.
She could feel Yelena shrugging behind her when she replied, “It’s a safe way to live.” She called out into the apartment, “Hello, boyfriend of Y/N’s. We come in peace.”
Y/N sent her a glare over her shoulder as she was passing her. “Shaun, you here?”
“You have key already? You’ve been moving fast.”
Y/N was glancing around as she muttered absentmindedly, “Stop stalking me. You sound utterly creepy.”
“What can I say? It’s a talent of mine.” She followed her example by going one step further and peeked at Shaun’s mail instead. “Did he dip already?”
Something caught her eye which made her frown. The familiarity of Shaun’s handwriting made her stop short before the beginnings of a letter stood out.
‘Dear Y/N…’
Y/N bit her lip once the message became apparent. Merely scanning the small letter, Y/N was still confused by the contents. Something about needing to do something important with Katy and that he was going to come back soon.
Not wanting to read anymore, Y/N let the piece of paper drop on the table again as heat grew in her cheeks. “Let’s just get out of here. The plane for Bucharest isn’t waiting forever.”
Yelena narrowed her eyes. “Mmmh, if you say so.”

hotel california- shangqi
pairings: xu shangqi x past widow!reader warnings: mentions of red room and just a lot of fluff about: sleepover request: clingy fluff with shangqi a/n: im obsessed with shangqi and widow!reader and although this isn’t really centered around that, i wanted to include it
time spent between you and your boyfriend had decreased dramatically ever since he became an official superhero. you went from seeing him and katy for over half the day every day to surviving on minute long phone calls and scarce lazy late night cuddle sessions because he had slipped into bed with you in the late hours of the night. the days that you would spend with only each other practically diminished, and the few hours you got with just each other were treasured like precious stones, stretched out as long as you both could until one or the other was called away.
which was why spending every second with each other on the free day you both had was so important. today was the first time in a long time when you both requested a day off— and actually got it approved. bruce and wong had sworn that the world would be fine without shangqi for the day, and your own team had assured you the case that had come in yesterday was in good hands with your most promising intern. the day was stress-free, your phones on complete silence—except for shangqi’s for emergent calls from nick fury for either or both of you, of course; you never know when a retired widow and the newest avenger are needed.
luckily, today neither of you were. and the skills engraved in you and shangqi were able to remain inside for the day.
your hands had been joined every minute you were in a crowd of people so you wouldn’t lose each other, desperate to savor every second together that you were gifted. frankly, you were both starved of each others’ touch for too long, and neither of you were going to take advantage of the time where you had the opportunity to enjoy it.
after sleeping in a little later than usual, you and your boyfriend had goofed around in the kitchen for a while, making a mess while you attempted to make pancakes, during which you both remembered that you weren’t exactly gifted in the cooking department. this was proven by the gross difference between your destruction of a pancake and shangqi’s own perfectly golden pancake. he had stifled a laugh but refused to let you throw away what you made, taking a proud picture instead.
the next few hours were made up of movie rewatching, ranging from the cheesiest rom-coms you could find to the newest horror movies you had missed. you must have missed at least half the movies displayed on the television from talking with each other and getting distracted by the other.
at some point, you both ended up on the sidewalk, heading to the only shop you knew of that sold the artisanal mango ice cream you had remembered you loved halfway through scream. shangqi had declared you had to have it, and punched in the destination in his gps before you were out the door.
your fingers interlaced without your notice, observing the beauty of san francisco while your arms swung in harmony and you asked your boyfriend how life avenger-ing was going.
“insane,” he answered, “the other day, i walked into a room and found freaking captain america brushing his teeth. i swear i peed myself when he waved at me like it wasn’t sam wilson standing in front of me and i didn’t just die inside a little.”
you laugh, pushing him lightly with your shoulder, “you do realize that’s how people feel when you wave at them, right? haven’t you ever seen the way little kids look at you?”
he blinks, “no.” he looks down at you, as if he’s just realized it, “holy shit, y/n.”
“holy shit indeed, shangqi. you’re a hero,” you squeeze his hand. “really hot one, too,” you add, fanning yourself with your other hand as you lean against shangqi’s side. “i’m dating a hero,” you gush, then pause, getting more serious. “you’re amazing, you know that? who else could defeat a huge organization that’s lived for centuries?”
he chuckles, squeezing you closer before pressing his lips to your forehead, “you, for one. don’t think i forgot that time you went mia and then i found out you were just taking down the red room with the black freakin’ widow.”
you pout at him, “can’t you let me compliment you for something amazing that you did?” you whine.
“i just give credit where credit is due,” shangqi shrugs, letting you pull him through the door once you see the sign to the store you’re looking for. “huh, i thought we still had a couple blocks to go.”
“you would literally be lost without me, shangqi,” you mutter playfully, entering the surprisingly crowded shop. “oh, looks like i wasn’t the only one with a mango ice cream craving, huh?”
you feel shangqi pull you closer from behind you, and you begin to walk further into the shop, only for your boyfriend to stop you after a few steps. “let’s not get separated, okay? you know what to do if you do.”
you sigh, shaking your head as you turn to look at him, “i’m not gonna do that.”
“we decided!”
“i was drunk— and honestly, i thought you were kidding!”
with a shake of his head, shangqi leads you further into the store, watching amusedly at your getting distracted by everything the store offered. he only lets go of your hand to open the freezer for the ice cream, but when he reaches for it again, it’s gone, your form lost among the crowd. he shuts the freezer door, ice cream in hand as he looks around for you, unable to find you within the amount of people.
you barely noticed that you’ve wandered off until your hand smacks a random womans’ arm instead of your boyfriend’s when you find a box of candy you’d been searching for forever. you apologize, craning your neck to try and spot your tall boyfriend.
“shangqi?” you call, but his name is lost in the sounds of varied conversations.
you get shoved onto one of the fridges, holding back your reflexes when you feel some random person grabbing your arm by accident. muttering a curse at the fact that you lost shangqi like he predicted, you look around, disappointed when you can’t find him anywhere.
“crap,” you whisper to yourself when you pat the empty pocket where your phone always was, remembering your phone is laying on the counter at your house because shangqi’s phone was all you insisted you needed. you groan when you realize what your only option is at the moment, palm already at your forehead in embarrassment, “how does it go…”
you go back to the nights of karaoke that used to be a normal night for you, unsurpised when the lyrics come back to you quickly. you start with a hum, “and i was thinkin’ to myself, ‘this could be heaven or this could be hell.’”
“then she lit up a candle and showed me the way,” you continue quietly, trying to build up the courage for what will surely be the most embarrassing experience of your life. “there were voices down the corridor,” you say a little louder, ignoring the strange looks you’re already receiving, “i thought i heard them say…”
“welcome to the hotel california!” you sing, song wavering in your voice, but clearer. “such a lovely place—”
you stop when you realize the whole store is quiet now, staring at you. you relax when you hear another familiar voice, turning when you realize where it’s coming from. “such a lovely place,” you mumble, about ready to just leave the place and wait for your boyfrend outside before you hear a familiar voice through the silence.
“such a lovely face,” shangqi sings, a huge grin taking over his face when he meets your eye.
sighing, you rush over to him, tightly grabbing his hand when you finally reach him and pulling him close to you, heading towards the cashier. shangqi smiles at the confused customers around him like a pop star after climbing off a stage.
“god, that is the worst possible way to find each other when we get lost.”
“it can’t be that bad if it worked,” shangqi shrugs, “and it worked very well.”
you laugh breathily, shaking your head as you get in line, turning to him. “i can’t believe i did that,” you grin. “we just performed for a store,” you realize.
“i hope someone got that on video,” shangqi tells you, “we could be next pop star power couple.” he kisses your cheek when they raise in a smile, but you catch his lips before he turns.
“we would be too powerful,” you tell him honestly, pecking his nose when you notice the customer front of you finishing up. “i say we should stick to private concerts, at least for now.” you say as you give the tired cashier a smile, paying for the sweets.
“hm, you’re right, of course.” shangqi agrees once you’re both outside, “i don’t know what i would do without you.”
“you’re lucky you don’t have to know, then.”

More Shangqi x widow! Literally anything!
Come Back To Me ❤️🩹
Shang Chi x Reader (Snippet or Blurb)
Summary: the ex-widow, although blissfully happy with Shang Chi and with the Avengers, experiences remorse in her past and that damage she endured.
Shang Chi guides her back to the present.
Warnings: Angst and Fluff mixed in together
A/N: This is another snippet or Blurb. it's a small sequel to the first one I wrote: Sunshine
I'm working on a one shot with Shang Chi, don't worry! I just wanted to add one more snippet of him before I through out another one shot
Happy reading :)
------------------------------------------------
You and Shang Chi were blissfully happy as a couple.
Ever since you kissed on that tarmac some month earlier, you two were inseparable. It was clear that you two worked as one: whether you worked out in the gym and sparring hard together, to just lounging together while watching a movie or reading a book.
The rest of the Avengers were supportive, seeing how Shang brought out the best in you and vice versa. Kate even jokingly gave you two the title, "Best Couple,"
Yelena was also happy for you, though she was a bit protective. She was the one who saved you from the Black Widow life after all. She considered you a sibling, something she took seriously since she lost her own sister Natasha.
You were out of eyesight one afternoon when you left Shang in the hallway with Yelena, fetching one of your weapons in the weaponry with Bucky to go do practice rounds with him. That's when you heard Yelena talk to Shang, both you and Bucky were quiet and listened on with your trained hearing.
"I only ever wanted her to be happy, she deserves some happiness for once," Yelena explained to him calmly.
"You know I feel the same way, Yelena," Shang reasoned lightly.
"I do," Yelena hummed, pausing for a moment before you heard her voice drop, "But if you ever break her heart or make her cry, I can and will break both of your legs with just one kick and make it look like an accident,"
You rolled your eyes, hearing Bucky chuckle as he stood next to you and shoved your shoulder playfully.
Since then, Shang was always on his P's and Q's with you in front of Yelena, which made you a bit agitated with Yelena because you knew he would never dare hurt you.
He also knew you still had some of those lethal Black Widow skills, so it never crossed his mind to double cross you.
Shang took you on dates, proper and old school dates. Whether it was to a restaurant or out to a movie, Shang treated you like a Queen.
You loved seeing him navigate through the streets of New York, finding hole in the wall places to take you that had amazing delicacies and great entertainment.
Those first few months were pure happiness.
And that's when you had a setback.
You were merely strolling through Central Park with Yelena, the two of you wanting to have some time together and enjoy the rather warm day out in the city. Shang was back at Avengers headquarters to go over an upcoming mission that would take place within the next few days.
You were perched on a bench, soaking in the warm rays of the sun as Yelena was playing around with a digital camera that she bought earlier that year. It was kind of cute to see her take random pictures of the pigeons walking along the sidewalk.
"You look like such a tourist," You snorted to her, seeing her grin as she took another picture.
"Fine by me, I'm taking some great pictures over here! You watch, I'm going to be having my own gallery," Yelena said boastfully.
"Of course, people will come by the dozens to a gallery with pictures of pigeons," You joked, though she flipped you off while she was still taking pictures. You chuckled, leaning back a bit and raising your head up to let the sun rays hit your face and bring you some peace. It was the first time in a relationship long time you were calm with no lingering negative thought in your mind or under your skin.
You heard the soft sound of a child giggle behind you, having you look behind you carefully and see a little girl, perched behind the bench and was grinning up at you. She had blond ringlets, framing her round face and her bright green eyes were shining like Emeralds.
You grinned down at her, waving your fingers at her as she covered her mouth with her hands, "Hello!" you greeted sweetly.
"Hi!" She whispered, her voice so tiny and soft as you cocked your head at her.
"What are you doing down there?" You asked playfully.
"I'm hiding from my brother! We're playing hide and seek!" She answered, ducking a bit more as then smiled. You placed a finger to your lips.
"I won't say a word," You played along, though you heard her mother call out to her. She sighed, almost a bit dramatically, popping up from her spot and running off after her mother who was a few yards away in the grass. You watched the little girl run, bouncing on her feet as she rang along the grass and her blond hair flying in the wind.
It made you pause, remembering something that you could never have.
One of the things that they did to you, back in the Red Room in the earlier years of being a Widow, was sterilize you. Of course, you had no choice in the matter. Yet seeing that little girl, living her innocent life in this world, it made you remember one thing that you could never have.
The title of Mother.
"Hey," Yelena said to you, her voice sounding a bit concerned as you finally looked over at her. Yelena's stare on your looked worried, almost hour stricken as she was searching your face, "What's wrong?"
You didn't realize you were crying until you felt a tear hit your jeans. You blinked a few times, shaking your head slowly.
"I...I don't know,"
Several hours later, you were sitting on the side of your bed and watching the window that gave you the view of the forest that was right behind the facility. You could hear two people talking right outside of your room, and you knew who it was.
Yelena brought you back to headquarters and gave you some time alone in your room. It felt so strange that you would cry and having what almost feels like a downward spiral from realizing that you couldn't bear children. You loved kids, you always have. You had a soft heart for them, even as Widow there was a hesitance within you in placing a child in danger.
Yet you couldn't have one or your own, not biologically. It felt like a stab in the heart.
Yelena, after guiding you to your room, went off to find Shang and fill him in on what happened in the park.
"I've seen this before with ex-widows, Shang. There are some who are completely fine with not having kids, and there are those who aren't. The ones who aren't go into a spiral, I've witnessed some of those and they are dark. There's no middle ground with it, and she's on the latter right now,"
"What can I do to help?" Shang asked, sounding concerned for you as you were ripping away another tear that was falling. You leaned down to rest your head in your hands, feeling so lost within your own head in the simple notion of not being able to conceive.
"Being with her might be the best thing," Yelena answered simply, "It was lonely as a Widow, and she's relearning a lot of things in this world. Having someone there for her in the hard times is very new, but she needs it,”
After a few minutes, you heard the door opening softly and gently, closing with a mummer of a click and the small sounds of feet walking into the room. You knew it was Shang, how he walked always gave you away with your tuned ears. You were still watching the window, not wishing to look at your boyfriend with a wrecked face and a heavy soul.
Shang surprised you though, climbed over the other side of the bed to crawl across and sit right behind you on the bed. With such precision and gentleness, he placed his hands on your shoulders and those hands slide down to embrace your arms. You felt his back against your chest, his chin on the top of your left shoulder as you took in a long breath.
"Yelena told me what happened," Shang said to you softly, his voice vibrating against your body as he kept talking, "How are you feeling?"
"Empty," You answered, feeling him stiff up a bit at the one word answer you gave him, "I never thought about it before....not being able to have a child on my own. I knew I was sterile, and I almost forgot about it, but seeing that little girl in the park made me remember what was....what was robbed from me,"
Without you realizing it, your hands hovered over your lower stomach, your barren stomach.
"I'm so sorry, sweetheart," He said to you against your head, having you finally lean into his embrace while he cradled you in his hands.
"I just want to forget that life I had, that I killed innocent people, that I helped start wars and hide in the shadows, but no matter how hard I try, I can't run from it," You muttered, taking in a sharp breath and then you hid your face in your hands. You started to silently cry, hating that this was hitting you in all the wrong places and making you feel worse. You were trying to run from your past as fast as you could, but one small mishap and memory made you trip and fall.
Shang was silent, rocking you slightly back and worth as your wept and got out your feelings on the edge of the bed. You felt how he held you close in his arms, not willing to let you go but also not suffocating you. You felt safe there, you felt peace there even as you cried
"You past does not define you," Shang reminded you calmly as you stopped crying and just sat there wiped out from your tears, "It's the soul of the person that matters, the heart of the person. The rest of the person can change in time, but its the heart and soul that make you....you,"
You sniffled, turning around awkwardly in Shang's arm to see him stare at him with love in his eyes and concern as well, "What a beautiful thing to say," You said to him in a hiccup, seeing him chuckle and look down a bit bashfully.
"I learned that from my mother," He explained, having you see the small flicker of sadness there on him when he mentioned his mother. It was a tender spot for Shang, mentioning his mother who loved him more than words. But you knew Shang held her memory beyond close to his heart.
"But she was right you know, and I know it's the same for you," He explained calmly as he poured his eyes into your own and pushed your hair out of your eyes lovingly, like an old lover would.
"You have such a good soul, a beautiful soul. I fell for your soul, not your past. Take it from someone with a shitty past, keeping your soul intact is far more important,"
You smiled at him, a wet smile from the tears that were still evident there. But you could feel and tell that he was giving you the truth. Maybe you had to hear it from someone else who never knew our past life, that the past was going to stay in the past.
"Come here, sweetheart," he hummed, pulling you into his embrace. You felt him wrap you in his arms as he tucked you into his lap, your head against his chest as your hands went up and behind him to bracket his shoulder blades.
"I know your mind is so far away," Shang explained as he stroked your back soothingly, "Come back to me, okay? I have you right here. Come back to me,"
It was hard sometimes, coming to the realization that Shang truly cared for you. And although you two never said the word yet, you even felt deep down that he loved you.
Because deep down, you loved him too.
He hummed to you for the next several minutes, an old song that sounded soothing like the rain as you were embracing on the bed and unwilling to let each other go.
"What song is that?" You whispered to him as he was still humming against your head.
"An old song my mom learned when she was a little girl," Shang explained as he pulled you in a pinch closer, "She would sing it to me when I was feeling sad,"
"It's beautiful," You explained, pressing a kiss agains this chest and breathing him in, "You're signing's not that bad either,"
"Hey, don't hate on my singing," Shang commented lightly as you grinned, "I happen to be a great singer, or do you not remember me singing at karaoke?"
You chuckled for the first time that night with Shang, feeling a pinch better in your banter with Shang. Shang was willing to see the nastiness of your past, seeing you in a dark place.
But he was also willing to pull you back.
The End.

Shangqi X reader
***
To say you were stressed was an understatement. Between starting a new job, getting your WSET certification, grad school starting, and trying to workout, your feet definitely were not your biggest fans at the moment.
Headphones in and crouched on the bed with your headband and glasses on, you hadn’t even heard Shaun come in. You were too busy focusing on cranking out a 1500 word essay that you had completely forgotten was due. All you had done after closing at work, and after spilling an entire beer on a customer and their phone, was take a shower, do your hair routine, and put it up in a gator mask you found that holds hair pretty well. You always thought you looked like a 12 year old boy, to which Shaun just laughs and says that you’d make a ‘very pretty boy’.
Mumbling to yourself really, you didn’t even notice the bed shift much less feel him there until a pair of arms were wrapping themselves around you.
“You know you can take a break right?” Quiet words whispered to you since it was 3am.
“Yeah but I completely forgot about this and it’s due tomorrow and since I’m closing again, I don’t know if I’ll have time to get it all done before midnight.”
Rushing out the words so you don’t lose your train of thought, you don’t even notice the look he gives you. You had texted him the moment you lost it at work. A bar is bad enough on some nights, but it gets even worse when your short staffed, changing things on the menu, and still being relatively new, since you started 2 months ago. So the second that glass just tipped right on over, the rest of your shift was a shit show. Not to mention how you felt when you realized you had to bullshit a damn paper too. Pounding down a shift drink and 30 minutes later you were home, showered, and typing like a madwoman.
“Babe.”
“Hmm.”
“Babe take a break.”
“Hmm.”
“Ok that’s it.” Not that you had even heard that, you were only 250 words away from your goal and in the zone.
The laptop shuts before you know it, tossed, lightly Shaun would later claim, to the foot of the bed.
“Bro what the fu-”
“You need to relax and chill. Besides I saw the word count, you can come back to it tomorrow. Tonight? You snuggle and sleep.”
Leaving no room for even the thought of an argument, you cuddle up closer to him, taking your glasses off and setting them aside.
“It is absolutely unfair how hot you run. Like a goddamn furnace.”
“What’s unfair is how hard you’ve been to yourself to the last 2 weeks.” You don’t have words for a response so you snuggle in closer to him, nuzzling your head into his neck. Breathing him in, you already feel more relaxed then you’d been since he first left to do whatever it was Ta Lo. It took him about 3 weeks to feel comfortable enough to tell what had happened. And while you were shocked, in the same breath you weren’t.
If a purple, saggy nut sack can erase half the population with a snap, your boyfriend can take 2 weeks to deal with a dimensional wormhole AND his father.
“Thank you dealing with all of this I know it’s not even remotely the same level of stress as it’s been for you.”
“Stress is still stress babe. We all have ways of coping; yours happens to be not eating,” insert an annoyed pointed stare, “while mine is flowing through the motions.
“But please maybe next time don’t want until it’s too much? It’s a lot to ask given that I don’t even really do that, but it’s a start.”
Mulling it over, you tilt your head up, looking from the way his face looks with just the lamp light on. Eyes still soft and brown like chocolate, look at you with a level of adoration that had originally scared you. But 3 years later you were less scared and more assured.
“Still,” poking his chest, only to have his grab your hand, “means a lot. I know I can be a bit much.”
“You could be a former Black Widow and you’d still be stuck with me.”
“Shangqi, do you have an assassin kink?”
“Relax you perv, I don’t have an assassin kink.” Some silence passes before he hits you with a curve ball.
“I may however, be addicted to the days when your nails are freshly done. Makes the rest of the day much more interesting.”

we all have our secrets (2/5) - shangqi x asian!reader
Summary: Two former assassins are still able to feel heartache and Y/N finds out what's really going on.
Word count: 3.2k
Rating: M
Warnings: language, angst, graphic violence
Relationship: Xu Shangqi x asian!reader
Additional tags: i'm serious this chapter is violent, things are popping off, another Widow shows up
Author’s note: I'm not going to reiterate the film's script from here on out, since I always hated that in fics. Just going to write what I feel like to fit the world of Black Widows and Shangqi at the same time. I used the Latin letters for the foreign words. Let me know if you'd rather have the Cyrillic letters or if the translation is wrong.
Upcoming updates might be less regular with school beginning next week. 😥 I still intend to finish this though.
I see you guys craving this through the comments here and on AO3, and the list of people wanting to get tagged, which I deeply adore.
Reblogs are appreciated.

~ Bucharest, Romania ~
There was something about the silence during a surveillance mission that couldn’t be replicated, with only the occasional clacking of the keyboard to observe their mark. In the meantime, Yelena was watching the fellow Widow who was housing the opposite hotel through her binoculars. For this mission they had rented the loft.
It almost felt like old times. With Yelena doing the recon and Y/N studying everything through a computer screen. Without further thought, Y/N reached forward and took a bite from a small piece of chocolate cake. Yelena didn’t spare the plate of confectionaries a single glance when her arm shot forward but only the sensation of cold metal touched her fingertips.
Almost in dismay, Yelena glared at the empty plate before it intensified with a judging stare focusing on Y/N.
In turn, Y/N was analyzing the routine of their Black Widow by fast-forwarding the archive material. Without glancing upwards, Y/N droned, “Do I feel you staring at me? Because I can feel you staring at me.”
Y/N detected Yelena’s index finger twitch out of the corner of her eye. “Do we have any more Amandines?” the blonde grumbled petulantly, hinting at the Romanian delicacy made of layered chocolate sponge cake.
Y/N didn’t see the appeal in indulging her, as much as she knew how cranky Yelena could get without food in her stomach. “Do you see any more?”
“Stop being sarcastic. It’s unbecoming of you.”
Y/N shrugged, without lifting her eyes from the screen. “Maybe you bring it out in me. Sisters, am I right?”
Yelena narrowed her eyes before letting the binoculars hang limp at her side. She turned her body towards her in confrontation. “Or maybe you’re just lovesick fool.”
The low blow aimed at her emotional connection with Shaun made her look up for the first time while her fingers hovered over the keyboard. “Maybe you shouldn’t talk about things you don’t understand.”
Yelena smirked cruelly. “Why? Because I'm a child who doesn’t see what’s right in front of her?”
Y/N narrowed her eyes. Maybe it was a bad idea pairing them off in the same room, sooner or later one was bound to verbally attack the other. “How would you know what love is? Concerning the fact, you never had anything real to begin with?”
It took Y/N by surprise how Yelena didn’t seem to act out. Breathing calmly through her nose, she leaned her hips against the wall. “Did you guys break up, or something?” Tilting her head, Yelena crossed her arms over her chest. “Who breaks up with a letter?”
It seemed, Y/N needed self-control needed more when she leaned back in her chair and breathed out the air she was holding, to calm herself. “We didn’t break up.”
“Then what has your panties in a twist?” Yelena asked with deep fascination.
“Why do you care?”
With a soft voice, Yelena assured her, “Let me live through you, Y/L/N.”
“So, I tell you my deepest, darkest secrets and you can just say ‘I told you so’?”
“Because your head isn’t in the mission. I need focused Y/N, no heartbroken Y/N.”
After debating with herself, she glanced at her through her eyelashes. “Shaun and I didn’t break up. He just had to … leave.”
Yelena twisted her mouth when her eyebrows rose high. “That’s it?”
Y/N shook her head in denial. “Something’s off. No one leaves the country just because.”
“You mean unlike us?” Yelena pursed her lips before she spoke with a raspy voice. “Wait a second. You’ve just started dating. If it’s you, you took your time, so…” Her eyes lit up with recognition. “You two screwed for the first time, didn’t you?”
The uncomfortable silence from Y/N’s side was telling enough when Yelena slapped her hands together. “Oh, you did. How exciting,” she said before speaking softly, “Must hurt. If he left the next day, huh?”
Y/N hummed under her breath as she felt still stung from Shaun’s departure, as much as Yelena hit her sore spot and repeated her own thoughts back to her. Her stomach was simmering with heat from the sting of rejection she couldn’t help but feel.
The words ‘with Katy’still rang through her head on repeat, mocking her. “I think I heard my phone vibrate,” she mentioned before reaching for her cell. “Going to the bathroom real quick.”
“I didn’t hear anything,” Yelena called out to her back.
“That’s strange,” she retorted before she shut the door behind her, intending not to catch whatever Yelena had to say.
Breathing in, breathing out.
Y/N hid her phone in the back pocket of her jeans and splashed water onto her face, to clear her head. While patting herself dry, Y/N was gazing into her reflection in the mirror.
It wasn’t a total lie that she had gotten a notification. Y/N just had the good sense to silence her phone around Yelena.
Her thumb hovered over the call button to replay her mailbox. Ever since the symbol had been blinking on repeat, Y/N felt the itch to sate her curiosity.
Like ripping off a band-aid, Y/N inserted the earbuds from the deep pockets of her hoodie into the jack and pressed the call button.
“Hey, it’s Shaun,” his low voice grumbled and stirred a feeling deep in her belly. Her muscles tightened after hearing the familiar sound of his voice. “Which you already know since you see my ID. Listen, I’m really sorry for leaving just like that.” Shaun released a heavy sigh. There was a part of Y/N that liked to believe that he was at a loss for words, or just didn’t know what excuse he was supposed to give her.
Or maybe that was the Black Widow talking that was prepared to expect the bad nature of people.
Shaun spoke fervently, “I know you must have a lot of questions and I promise you − I’m going to explain everything to you, I swear. And I know you’re probably mad at me. Who am I kidding? You haven’t answered any of my texts or calls. So, the answer is pretty much a given. The thing is, I just miss you and I wish you were here with me right now. I absolutely hate that you’re not−”
Y/N stopped the message. Listening to it had been a mistake.
Yelena was right. Her head wasn’t in it.
Exhaling heavily, Y/N threw her head back before she whispered, “What a fucking mess.”
~ Shangqi POV ~
Shangqi let out another heavy sigh and couldn’t stop moving around while he was waiting for his sister to finally arrive.
“Could you stop that?” Katy’s annoyed voice echoed a few meters away from him.
Her words made Shangqi stop in his tracks. “Stop what?”
Katy mockingly sighed in exaggeration to duplicate the noises he made. “Just call her, man.”
“I have called her. She hasn’t answered me back yet.”
Katy’s eyes widened in shock at the fervent confession. “Oh my God, do you think she’s ghosting you? Respect to Y/N for being a dude.” She scratched the back of her neck. “I mean, you guys had sex, right?”
Shangqi sputtered nervously, “Uh - I – what−” He surrendered to Katy’s intuitive nature and spoke slowly, “How do you know?”
Katy rolled her eyes. “Oh please, a girl can tell.”
“I think she’s mad because I left like that. With you.”
Katy pointed to her chest, with aggravation shining in her eyes. “You think she’s mad at me too? I can’t have her mad at me. Between the two of you, Y/N’s such a badass. And I don’t want to get on her bad side, dude.”
Displaying a grimaced smile, Shangqi retorted teasingly, “Thanks, you’re a great friend.”
Katy sighed, “I know. It’s a great burden.” She sent her friend another glance. “Then why didn’t you take your pretty little girlfriend with you? You could’ve told her everything. I’m guessing you haven’t.”
After hearing that specific word, an awkward Shangqi spoke with regret in his voice, “She’s not … my girlfriend.”
“Could’ve fooled me,” she muttered under her breath.
~ Bucharest ~
This mission was turning into a nightmare, Y/N thought, as she huffed under her breath.
“Please tell me you have eyes on our target,” she inquired when she ran to the other side of the road.
She had other issues to deal with other than the honking cars when Yelena’s voice said over the comms, “She has a name, you know. She’s still one of us.”
Y/N didn’t have time for this. “Status update, now,” she whisper-barked and pulled the hoodie over her face, while trying to appear incognito upon crossing the hotel lobby.
“Geez, someone is in need of sex,” Yelena muttered before she turned serious again. “Her location tells me she just entered the elevator on her level.”
“Got it.” Y/N covertly opened the door leading up to the stairs before she rushed up the steps. “Which level is she on?”
Yelena’s voice turned bewildered. “You want to run up 52 levels?” Delighted chuckles exhaled from her lips. “I so love when you’re being sumasšedšij suka. She’s on 49 … 48 … 47.” [crazy bitch]
“I’m getting close.” Upon entering the hall, Y/N rushed to the elevator doors and pressed the button. She exhaled in rushed breaths from the adrenaline to calm herself as she waited for the elevator to arrive.
“Are you out of shape, Spider?”
“Fuck you.”
“Love you too, sestra.” [sister]
The red numbers indicated their target getting closer, giving Y/N enough time to adjust the fabric of her hoodie and pull up the zipper.
As soon as the elevator arrived with a satisfying ding, Y/N stepped inside after detecting the Widow out of the corner of her eye.
“Remember the plan. Be careful around her, not to underestimate.”
The entire body dark-skinned woman stilled.
Inhaling deeply, Y/N held her breath as soon as the thought hit her that the rogue agent could hear a murmuring voice in Y/N’s ear.
“Fuck,” she whispered when the realization truly hit her. Knowing there was no way out of this, Y/N stomped against the ‘stop’ button with the heel of her boot.
She felt the wind whip around her face way before the Widow sliced a knife through the air to reach her throat.
A grunt left Y/N’s lips as she tried to hold the other off before hitting it out of her grip. The weapon made a clattering sound when it fell to the corner of the elevator.
Trying to regain control of the situation, Y/N punched the taller woman’s throat with the sharp edges of her chopping hand, making her choke from the invasive force.
Keeling over, Y/N’s opponent held her sore throat while emitting groaning sounds.
The first warning she received was when the Widow sent her a dark glare and twisted her mouth into a snarl. This was seconds before the woman punched her low in the stomach. The instinct to vomit was never stronger when an acid feeling pushed itself up her airpipe.
Y/N coughed loudly.
She could hear Russian curse words being muttered under Yelena’s breath. “I’m on my way. Hold her off as long as you can.”
Y/N barely had time to react when she felt the sharp elbow against her throat before the back of her head was slammed against the wooden exterior, dropping the hoodie from her head.
The dark-skinned Widow was choking her out while her eyes were shining with dark intent to murder her without hesitation.
Scowling, Y/N gripped the hand keeping her glued to the wall, as she croaked, “Believe it or not, I’m not enjoying doing this.”
Without further words, Y/N snapped a bone in her hand until a sickening crack echoed through the elevator. The woman’s inhaling breath transformed into a surprised shriek before she kicked her shin to get her off kilter.
Y/N balanced herself against the wall from the pain. She could only watch as she opened the hatch of the elevator and jumped through the open escape. “Damn it.”
Y/N hissed from the pain before she breathed heavily. “She’s on her way,” she whispered into the comms.
Not intending to waste time, Y/N followed her by ascending the cords and through the tight box of the ventiduct before she could finally jump through the open grate. Somersaulting on the gravelly ground of the roof and clenched her hands into fists.
She was getting tired of the running.
For the first time, Y/N could truly look at her. To admire her skin which shone like the night sky and her eyes which she would compare with onyx-colored marbles. When she was still in the Red Room Y/N admired how she had shaved her head to showcase that she didn’t care about the program’s rules to use a woman’s wiles and weapons.
Old habits die hard.
The agent carefully glanced at the ground way below as she considered jumping.
“No way out, Sylvana.” Y/N held out her arms at her hips. “I don’t want you to get hurt. More than you already have.”
To prove she meant it, Y/N pulled off the hoodie to reveal her Black Widow suit underneath and pointed her fist with the activated Widow’s Bites at Sylvana. “But I will if you force me to.”
Y/N reminded herself not to roll her eyes when Yelena rushed towards them with a zipline. “This is my cue. We’re not here to hurt you, Sylvana, but this is for your own good.”
Sylvana merely scoffed in response.
“Well, great,” Yelena whispered in disappointment, like she was almost expecting it.
Yelena jumped in the air when Sylvana tried to swipe her legs. Instead, the Russian somersaulted towards her to get her in a chokehold from behind. “Don’t fight this. This is all over before you know it.” She revealed the syringe with the Red Dust in liquid form before she pointed it to her neck.
- THWACK -
Sylvana hit Yelena’s face with the back of her head.
The other woman grunted from the force. “Prokljatyj, didn’t know your bald head had so many bones.” [God damn it] Her nose was slightly twisted as blood was dropping to her upper lip.
Y/N acted fast when Sylvana was trying to jump from the ledge. Shooting her Black Widow’s Bite at her, Sylvana convulsed in place.
Yelena caught her arm while Sylvana was dangling on the edge with her foot. “This isn’t fun anymore, Sylv.”
Y/N sighed when the stubborn fight still hadn’t left Sylvana. She pulled out a gun from her waistband and pointed it at Y/N.
Y/N furrowed her eyebrows in confusion that she chose her instead of Yelena, who would be the easier target to reach.
Yelena was breathing heavily and momentarily glanced back at Y/N. Seeing Sylvana’s distraction, she injected the red liquid into her thigh and pulled her back on the safe ground. Yelena kept her in a tight grip by holding onto her shoulders.
Sylvana was blinking slowly before the red vanished from her eyes and she finally regained true control.
Red was staining her teeth when Yelena smiled in relief before she swiped the blood from her lips. Pride was shining in her eyes when she glanced at Y/N. “That was fun, wasn’t it?”
Y/N nodded slowly. As much as she could finally breathe again, there was something else at the back of her mind.
She slowly stalked towards Yelena and tapped her shoulder from behind. Before she could suspect her, Y/N choked her with her elbow while her other fist pointed with glowing red Widow’s Bites at Yelena’s neck.
“Is there something you’re not telling me, sestra?” [sister]
“What revealed me?” Yelena breathed heavily against her.
Y/N huffed in disbelief. “You need to work on your poker face,” she muttered menacingly, thinking back to the concern in her green eyes when Sylvana was pointing a gun to her head. “You would’ve been the better target, but she chose me. Why?”
“Okay, I admit, things are a bit different than I portrayed them as. Now would you please let go of my throat?”
Indignant wrath was streaming through her veins when Y/N used more force on her neck while letting the voltage of her Bites rise to a higher level with a pulsating sound. “Come again?”
“Okay, you’re mad, I get it,” Yelena uttered with a raspy voice while trying to appease Y/N.
Out of the corner of her eye, Y/N detected Sylvana carefully advancing towards them, with every intention not to spook Y/N. “I’ll tell you what’s going on.”
Yelena shook her head vigorously.
“She deserves the truth,” Sylvana stated with an imploring voice. Her Sudanese accent became even more apparent with the emotions she was conveying.
Sylvana’s gaze met Y/N’s. “Youare our mission.”
The sounds of the city turned to a dull throb in her ears when the shock cloaked her senses. Y/N’s own heartbeat pulsated at her temple.
Sylvana’s next words resounded like a vague echo in her head. “Someone wants you – desperately. You being alive was more of an option,” she uttered without sugarcoating the truth. Y/N didn’t mind since she had gotten used to people not wanting to spare her feelings. She wasn’t used to emotions after all.
The shock was getting to her when she released Yelena from her grip and pushed her off of her. Yelena quickly regained her balance before straining her neck with a hiss. “You wanted to use Bites on me, grebanaja suka.” [fucking bitch]
Indignant rage was shining in Y/N’s eyes when she glared at the one, she used to trust as a friend.
What a joke.
Y/N pointed to her chest and hissed with an angry voice, “You used me as bait.”
Yelena lifted her hands while trying to explain her reasonings. “Okay, I admit, it was two birds with one stone. They wanted you, I wanted Widows free.”
Her voice shifted into a defensive tone. “It was a good plan,” she added vehemently and straightened her arms at her hips. “You were safe.”
The corners of Y/N’s mouth twisted in incredulity. “Didn’t you hear the part about me being alive would’ve been an option?” Y/N merely shook her head in disappointment. “Fucking Widow.”
Y/N was a fool to have trusted Yelena in the first place – or mildly tolerated her, she thought before she turned around as she intended to leave.
“Y/L/N, Ja prošu tebja!” Yelena called to her back as her accent intensified due to the emotions she let shine through. [I beg you]
Y/N’s eyes were shining while gazing back at her with distrust before they met the other Widow. “Sorry about the hand.”
“It’s – I understand. I tried to kill you after all.”
Hesitation made Y/N’s body still when she slightly turned her head in wariness. “Why do they want me dead?”
Sylvana shook her head. “I’m not sure.”
“Do you know who it is? I need to know what I’m dealing with here.”
“What we’re dealing with,” Yelena reminded her with a passion, stepping towards her. “Someone’s after a Spider, it involves all of us.”
There was something about Sylvana glancing nervously at Yelena that didn’t set Y/N at ease. Y/N had enough of being kept out of the loop.
First Shaun with not sharing what was going on with him and now this?
“What are you guys not telling me?”
“I don’t know the details, only that it’s someone powerful−” Sylvana replied vaguely.
Yelena sighed in resignation. “They call him the Mandarin.”
“Okay.” Y/N nodded to herself before shrugging. “Who the hell is that?”

Don’t Cry No Tears ❄️
Shang Chi x Ex Black Widow Reader
Summary: Shangqi shows his girlfriend, an ex-Black Widow, the true wonders of the first snowfall of the Season.
A/N: I just CAN’T let go of this Shang Chi and Ex Black Widow pairing! I might make it a series, who knows!
-----------------------------------------------------------
Seasons weren’t that big of a deal to you. You were accustomed to blend into them when you were a Widow in the past, having to adapt to any weather to situation.
Yet now you didn’t have to, it was like you were seeing it through a new set of eyes.
Summer time was terrible: too hot for you to just sit and try to cool down. And you burned like a lobster.
Springtime was a nightmare on your allergies, sniffling all the time and feeling heavy in the head.
Fall was weird: Some days it was hot and some days it was cold. The orange and yellow leaves weren't so bad though.
Winter was a different beast.
Something about the cold made you remember your old life as a Widow. You had no idea if it was the bite of the cold on your skin, or just being in the vast wasteland of white that made you think of your old ways.
Now once again it was Winter at ten Avengers Compound, you were waking up early one morning to the soothing touches and kisses across your nose and cheeks. Although you were in a deep sleep, you knew those touches and kisses instantly. You reminded yourself every morning when you woke up: Your were safe, you were free, and you were with him.
Shangqi, the light in your ever darkness.
“Wake up, sweetheart,” he hummed against your forehead with his lips. You grumbled.
“What is it?” You groaned, wanting to sleep in some more. Yet Shangqi tutted and pulled the covers down adn away from you. You glared at him, seeing his handsome and yet playful gaze at you.
“It’s snowing outside!” He sounded like a child on Christmas. It was cute, although too early for you to indulge in.
“You can go jump in yourself,” You said in a grumble, yet you were getting a bit pliant as he wrapped his arms around you to gently pull you up from your spot in the bed. You sighed, becoming too easy to give in with him. You had to wonder when you got soft and a pushover.
Yet when you looked in the eyes on your boyfriend, the man who took your darkness and brought it to light, you knew why.
Shangqi merely grinned at him, that smile would make any icy heart melt.
“It’s better to enjoy it now before it turns to ice and gets uncomfortable.” He reminded you gently as he pushed your hair out of your eyes with his fingers, “And I don't wanna go out there all alone and enjoy it by myself. I’d rather be with my beautiful and amazing girlfriend,”
“What a dilemma for you,” You joked with him with small sarcasm, yet your smile was growing on your face as he was peering into your eyes and still holding you close. You finally sighed, Shangqi chuckling as he saw he won the battle.
“Fine,” you complied, “But I’m coming inside when I start to freeze and turn into a popsicle,”
“Deal,” he hummed in victory.
You both threw on your winter clothes, you learned how to work with layers when you used to be a Widow in the past and you had to move fast. Although you had no mission now, you still used layers and nothing too heavy.
Shangqi was all too excited to go out, waiting patiently for you as your braided your hair back and threw on your gloves. You never felt rushed with Shangqi, it was the many things that you loved about him.
Once you two were finally ready to take on the snow, Shangqi took your hand in his and held open the door for you to the outer courtyard of the Avengers compound.
The cold hit your skin first, having you recoil for a moment before the blinding whiteness of the scenery around you almost blinded you. It took you a moment to adjust.
Yet once you did, it was breathtaking.
The snow covering the entire area looked so soft and peaceful, like some kind of wonderland as the light snowflakes were cascading down onto the ground. You felt a few snowflakes touching your skin, the cooling touch against your red cheeks was sensation. It was so quiet, quiet and serene to drink in.
It made you realize you never once, not in your memory, you recall enjoying a soft moment in the snow ever in your life. You never had a moment to pause and drink in the serenity and the gentleness of the first snowfall.
Something inside of you, the feeling of peace and almost safety was going over you like a snowy blanket.
Shangqi’s hand in yours squeezed slightly, having you look over at him and seeing him peer down at you with his soft smile and loving gaze in his eyes. You saw the snowflakes in his dark hair, on his eyelashes, and even on his cheeks as you two were looking at each other.
“You look beautiful in the snow, sweetheart,” He hummed to you, making it sound so simple to say but it was so much for you to hear. You grinned widely, leaning over to kiss him on the cheek before you looked down at the powder on the ground in front of your boots.
Reaching down, you took a handful and stood back up, cupping the cold substance in your hands and feeling it already starting to melt in your warm palm. You giggled.
“It’s so soft,” You hummed, then looking at Shangqi with a mischievous raised eyebrow and grin. Shangqi’s smile faded away, almost looking worried.
“Don’t you dare--” Before he could finish, he threw the snow at him. He only got a bit on his face, dodging the rest as you laughed. The laugh ran out in the courtyard, a hearty one as you felt so whole there, feet deep in the snow and with your boyfriend and lover. Shangqi playfully glared at you.
“Oh, you’re dead!” He said, you bolting away from him as he reached down to get his ammunition.
This went on for a few solid minutes, the two of you in a snowball fight. Shang Chi may of had the upper hand with speed and being able to dodge the snowballs you threw, but you were skilled in aiming precisely where you wanted to hit.
The only sounds were hard were the crunching of snow from your feet and you digging up snowballs, and your laughter echoing off the walls of the Avenger building.
The snow was starting to chill you after a while, yet you had no heart to stop with Shang as you two were circling each other like it was a game fo cat and mouse.
Shangqi finally got the upper hand with you, tackling you to the snow ground and your shrieks were hearing in the air as you fell into the pillow of cold. Shangqi hovered over you, a grin plastered on his face and laughter on his lips. You were laughing too, sinking into the snow and feeling the cold sink into your jacket and your hair as you peered up at him.
For a moment, you thought of him as an angel.
Shangqi was an angel. He saved you from being alone, being in the dark and shut away from the world.
You paused under him, gazing at him with your rosy cheeks and your red tipped nose.
Shangqi was always there for you since you left that old life. He show it that it was oaky to have a shitty past but a promising future. He expressed to you that a family can be found, not just made.
Most importantly, that even the severely broken can be mended.
Shangqi mended you, thoroughly and completely.
You leaned up to kiss him, his cold lips against yours spread warmth into your blood stream as you both held the kiss in the snow pile you both were perched in. Shangqi leaned into you, never one to stray from a kiss from you as you sighed against his lips and embrace. You felt one of his hands touch your neck, making you shiver from feeling the ice cold fingers. Yet you leaned in closer, not wanting to be far away from him.
You had no idea if it was the snow that made you act like this, or that you were in a simple state of mind of peace and sanity, but your love for Shangqi was getting deeper and wider.
“I love you,” you hummed against his lips, feeling him smile as you opened your eyes and gazed at him. Shangqi looked back, pure love in his eyes as he was searching your orbs.
“And as much as I want to make out on the snowy ground with you,” You started, seeing Shangqi laugh and lean down to rest his forehead against your shoulder, “I am officially cold. Let’s go inside and warm up,”
“As you wish, my Milady,” Shangqi hummed in a face British Accent, getting up and pulling you up to then have you in his arms, bridal style. You almost squealed from the movement, sighed in a smile as your arms went around his neck.
“I can make us some hot apple cider and we can sit in front of a fire,” He hummed as he walked the pair of your towards the door, “And we can find other ways to warm each up….”
You giggled and slightly blushed, though Shangqi showed no shame in what he said
“I’m just giving you options,” he reasoned.m, “But cider and a fire first!”
“Sounds heavenly,” you replied in a grin, resting your head against his chest. You took one last look at the snow atmosphere around you, feeling beyond content. All it took was a few minutes in the snow to change you worldview of Winter.
In the past, Winter was bleak and forgettable.
Now with Shangqi, you weren't going to forget anytime soon.
The End.

“So, who wants to go first?”
The tension-filled silence only made things worse as soon as Wenwu gazed expectantly into the eyes of his ‘guests’. Shangqi’s sister glanced at them with a bored expression as she used the chopsticks to play with her food.
The only thing anchoring Y/N to the present was Shangqi holding her hand at her side under the table which covered a variety of foods.
Unsatisfied with the group not showing a reaction, Wenwu rested his arms against the table, putting his bracelets on full display. In Y/N’s head, she couldn’t help calling them that, knowing how much it bothered Wenwu when she dubbed them like that out loud. That thought alone put a smile on her face.
Y/N slowly turned her head to gaze at the man, only to feel his inquisitive stare on her already.
“Y/N, how are your ribs feeling by the way?”
Shangqi’s face hardened at the reminder of her injury before Y/N felt his fingers caressing her hand in comfort.
Y/N smirked, trying to get a rise out of rigid terrorist leader. “Oh, I’ve never been better. Nothing beats having your bracelets hit against the side of my body with a lethal force. You should try it some time.”
“Don’t call them ‘bracelets’, child,” Wenwu spoke slowly with narrowed eyes.
Xialing, who was sitting opposite them, chuckled under her breath. “I like this one,” she said before pointing her chopsticks at her and turned back to her meal.
“You tried to kill her,” Shangqi threw in, with simmering anger in his voice. In any other situation his protectiveness would be flattering or even arousing, but the ache at her side and the insidious situation they were in, took over her mind more.
“Don’t be dramatic. A Black Widow knows how to fend for herself after all.”
Y/N exhaled heavily. She was still processing the literal bomb Wenwu just dropped before she even comprehended that Shangqi let go of her in shock. Her stomach clenched once the realization hit her that Wenwu managed to hit her where it would hurt the most. The life she built for herself. The life she built together with Shangqi.
Y/N swallowed thickly as she turned her head to look at Shangqi pleadingly. Silently begging him to look at her.
Despite the silence taking over the room, the blood rushed to her head, making her feel all woozy from the incoming ringing taking over. With her heartbeat racing nervously in Y/N’s chest, she could feel Xialing’s intrigued stare on her.
“Wait, you’re a Black Widow, for real? Like, Natasha Romanoff-Black Widow?” Katy asked with a hoarse voice made of surprise and reverie. Y/N didn’t know whether her friend’s admiration was for her former status as a Black Widow or her connection to Romanoff.
The mere mention made Y/N abruptly face her with a venomous glare. “Don’t mention that name.”
Satisfied with that outcome, Wenwu laced his fingers together. Smug apathy took over his features. It made Y/N wonder what horrors he had to face in his immortal life to gain that perspective that people were just disposable.
“To be honest, I knew you meant something to my son and … you were just a means to an end. I didn’t really care in what kind of state you’d end up.”
Y/N leaned forward in her chair. “Just admit it,” she glared at Wenwu with her next words, “you send my sisters after me, you’re trying to have me killed.”
The stillness of Shangqi’s body was starting to worry her as her anxious eyes met the side of his head. “Shangqi? Please look at me,” Y/N begged him openly, knowing how rare it was for her to admit her vulnerabilities. To earnestly admit her feelings.
Shangqi stubbornly faced the table and settled his arms on the table, openly defying her wish for closeness. Shangqi was all about showing affection - it was one of the things that unsettled her upon meeting him. How the Red Room upbringing had enforced her to remain unfeeling, not to let anyone get close to her and never to trust anyone. It was strange how she craved Shangqi’s sign of affection by a simple touch.
He merely clenched his jaw, refusing to face her again.
Wenwu asked with an innocent voice, “Oh, you didn’t tell him about that? That’s harsh.”
It turned out a ‘family’ dinner could turn out even more awkward than previously thought. If Wenwu’s monologue about the Mandarin’s impersonation and appropriation of the Ten Rings wasn’t bad enough, Shangqi’s cold exterior was.
Y/N felt like she was on the outside looking in of this intimate and most tension-fueled event. Her skin was burning from Shangqi not even sparing her another glance.
Y/N clenched her jaw and focused her eyes straight ahead. Astonishment hit her once Y/N met the soft-eyed glance of Xialing as Shangqi’s sister let sympathy shine through like a blanket.
“I’ll let you freshen up,” Wenwu cleansed his fingers with a light-colored napkin that complimented his dress shirt and casually threw it on the table before standing up, “and I will meet you all in my office to talk about things.”
The moment that Wenwu’s presence was gone, and the heavy tension left with him – save for Shangqi’s which left a pang in her chest - the body language of everyone changed dramatically.
“Guys, please tell me we’re not sticking around for this lunatic. No hard feelings, man,” Katy admitted with honesty.
“None taken,” Xialing and Shangqi retorted simultaneously.
“And no. We’ll see what his plan is and then we’re getting the hell out of here.” Her brother assured them.
The escape from the Ten Rings headquarters turned out messier and even more fantastical than Y/N had expected. Getting her gear back, discovering the former Mandarin imposter, escaping with the former Mandarin imposter through a magical maze and reaching the magical dimension of Ta Lo.
A small part of Y/N believed that Xialing reveled in the misery of her older brother when she took the seat by the door, effectively squeezing Y/N into a tight space with Shangqi. Being able to feel every sharp turn - or more like his strong muscles, as they tensed with every colliding touch.
The fact that this was such a fantastical place wasn’t the only factor to make Y/N feel so out of place. It was the distance Shangqi kept between him and her. It felt like Y/N was merely tolerated for the ride and she hated being the passive force.
The cooing noise under her fingertips pulled her out of her thoughts and made Y/N look down to one of the fantastical animals which habituated this home territory that had slowly inched towards her as she ruminated on the patch of grass. Upon further observation it appeared to be a hybrid of a red-golden winged lion. Absentmindedly, Y/N stroked the soft feathers of its wings and watched its wide golden eyes settle on her as it snuggled deeper along her calves.
“You seem to have a magical touch.”
The sudden voice made Y/N look up in curiosity.
Xialing was wearing her new silver-black armor as she inched towards her with casual steps - a description she wouldn’t have associated with the rigid sister. If anything, due to her upbringing, it gave Y/N the impression that Xialing tried not to spook her.
Shrugging her shoulders, Y/N gave her new feathery friend her full attention.
“I never thought I’d enter a world where I ever encountered a Pixiu,” Xialing whispered almost in awe, like this animal was something to worship. Her eyes didn’t leave the animal’s form as she knelt down and sat cross-legged.
“Do you know the story behind them?” Her fingers cautiously stroked the back as its wings flapped from the care it was receiving.
Curiosity shone in Y/N’s eyes as she looked up, bonding over the purring hybrid. “Not that well-versed in Chinese Mythology,” she admitted.
“The males are a symbol of wealth, while the females are supposed to ward off evil. It seems you found a female,” Xialing explained calmly, just in time to have another dragon lion get closer and willingly snuggled at her hips before nudging her with his head. This one had a different color though, in blue-and-gold feathers.
Y/N raised a teasing eyebrow. “And you’re saying I’m the one with the magic touch?”
Xialing smirked indulgently. “Usually, animals shy away from me.”
“Is that supposed to mean something? That they have some sort of instinct to keep away from you?”
“Probably my own inhibition to get close.”
“It’s all about training, Xialing. You can train or manipulate your body for anything.”
As soon as the word ‘training’ left Y/N’s mouth, Xialing cleared her throat. “Speaking of training, is it true that the Red Room program only trained women?”
Y/N exhaled heavily and dropped her head. The moment the female Pixiu sensed the loss of her touch, she jumped into her lap, making her jolt with a humph.
Absentmindedly, she stroked the hybrid’s stomach which felt strangely furry than feathery. “I was wondering when someone would mention that part.” She inhaled deeply and gazed into the sky. “Girls,” Y/N corrected her, feeling that the distinction was pretty important. “They train young girls to turn them into assassins.”
“How old were you when they−?”
“Took me? About 7. It’s just easier to mold kids into their perfect killers and manipulators when they’re still young and … pliable? Simpler to play with their minds when they’re still easy to impress. To shape us into what the instructors wanted us to become.”
Xialing’s eyes shifted, trying to come up with words. “I’m not good with comforting people.”
In that regard - of wearing your heart on your sleeve - Xialing was certainly nothing like her brother.
Y/N cleared her throat. “I don’t … want you to?”
Xialing nodded her head mechanically, rocking her upper body back and forth. “That’s great to hear. That’s cool.” She pressed her lips together before awkwardly adding with an exhaling breath, “Cool.”
A pregnant pause settled in the air before Xialing asked, “So, uh, what’s your name again?”
Y/N snorted at her crude social skills, yet still replied, “Y/N” while waving to her chest.
“Xialing, the forgotten sister.”
Y/N raised her eyebrows at the offhanded remark and felt utterly torn between wanting to defend Shangqi and knowing how much the sister was at a disadvantage with the way her own father barely even glanced at her at his compound.
Y/N sighed and glanced when the flutter of wings touched her legs. “Would you prefer it if I defended Shangqi or you?”
Xialing sent her a side-eyed glance which was filled with annoyance. “You know, as much as I don’t want to be judgmental−”
“I’m getting the feeling that you’re still going to.”
She continued as if Y/N hadn’t said a thing, “−but what do you see in him again? You’re like way out of his league.”
Y/N scoffed with laughter which turned almost wheezing.
“Who am I kidding? You’re like leagues ahead. You're not even playing the same sport.”
“I love the vote of confidence.”
“I mean, who would have thought? A Black Widow and my brother? Talk about mind-blowing.”
“That would imply that we were on good terms, you know, since we’re not. Your brother has been giving me the silent treatment ever since we arrived at this place.”
“Listen…” The Pixiu purred underneath her fingertips while Xialing stroked the feathers of the male creature, “we don’t have time for regrets. As I much as I can’t stand my brother sometimes, you two need to have that conversation, before mayhem ensues. The way I know my father, it is going to come. Before it’s too late.”
Astonishment shone in Y/N’s eyes at her profound words, seeing the other woman in a different light. “Xu Xialing, I wouldn’t have pegged you as a romantic.”
Xialing rolled her eyes. “I’ll deny everything when someone asks,” she threatened lightly with glaring eyes. Xialing tilted her head and pursed her lips in mock contemplation. “Or I could kick your ass right here, right now.”
Y/N chuckled. “You’re funny. Shangqi should’ve told me he had a funny sister.”
“I’m serious.”
Y/N gazed into her brown eyes. “You think you could beat me in a fight?”
“I could ask you the same thing,” Xialing mused thoughtfully before sending Y/N a teasing smirk. Her eyes shone with a daring glimmer which had the intended effect when a jolt coursed through her body.
“I know you’re just trying to get to me, but challenge accepted.” With these words, Y/N stood up from her cross-legged position. “Try to keep up, would you?”
Xialing sneered. “That’s funny.”
“You’re cheating,” Xialing stated with a raspy voice.
A snort left her lips. “I would hardly call this cheating.”
Her hand was still rubbing the sore spot on her throat before Xialing sent her a judgmental stare. “You just punched me in the throat. You seem to have a loose definition of cheating.”
Y/N smirked. “You say that now and you haven’t even met my friend yet. She basically created the whole playbook of cheating. How do you think I survived your father? By being honest?”
The mention of her father made her spring into action. Xialing leaped in the air with her hand clenched into a fist.
It made a thumping sound against her wrist to block the attack which had a flurry of fists to follow. Y/N grunted before she switched back into strike mode and hit Xialing’s face with the back of her elbow, making the other woman let out a pained grunt.
A taken-aback gasp pulled her out of the moment before Y/N looked back and saw that they had lured quite a crowd of onlookers watching the spectacle. Including Katy who covered her mouth with her hands.
Shangqi standing next to his best friend, with his arms crossed over his chest and a frown on his face, made Y/N hesitate for a second.
It was all Xialing needed to trip her feet. Y/N fell backwards, with Xialing’s triumphant grin on her face as she was standing above her.
Xialing’s pride soon shifted into dread.
Y/N scissored her legs around Xialing’s neck. Pulling her opponent towards her until they were face-to-face, Y/N kept her arm in a tight lock, pressing against her pressure point on her wrist.
“Yield,” Y/N hissed through gritted teeth.
“You first,” came Xialing’s reply.
“Five more seconds and you will faint; with the way I’m pressing on your wrist. You’re probably feeling fuzzy already.”
Xialing blinked twice. “It’s a tie,” she grunted with wheezing breaths. The chokehold and the grip on her wrist were probably slowly getting to her.
“Agreed.” Despite the knowledge how Y/N could render her immobile, she released her thighs around her neck.
Xialing inhaled deeply before grunting. “Guess we need to do that again.”
Y/N’s head did a double-take from her statement. “Come again?”
Xialing squatted onto her knees before straightening into a standing position. Y/N looked up, just as Xialing’s hand was offered at her eyelevel.
“I could use a capable sparring partner,” Xialing admitted with a soft smile – an expression which Y/N wouldn’t have expected coming from her.
She accepted her help in standing up and brushed a few sweaty strands away from her forehead. “You’re very optimistic for someone whose father is intending to bring about the end of the universe.”
Xialing shrugged, almost brushing her body against hers as she stepped closer. “What can I say? I believe in delayed gratification. Baby steps, you know?”
“Really? Wouldn’t have figured.”
Something moving in the side of her eye made Y/N turn her head to see the dark-haired head of Shangqi moving further away with brisk steps, with his arms clenched at his sides.
Y/N furrowed her brows and glanced in confusion at Katy, hoping for some answers. Her long dark hair whipped through the air to glance back at her friend before switching her gaze between Y/N and Xialing and mouthed, “I don’t know.”
Y/N sighed under her breath, but still felt her feet lingering.
“Talk to my brother. There’s still time to train for later,” Xialing acquiesced with a soft voice.
Y/N turned her head with the corners of her mouth pulling downwards, hating that Xialing wanted to be the voice of reason. Still, Y/N hesitated.
Xialing insisted though. “Come on. We don’t have the luxury to have regrets, remember? Or do you want me to kick your butt again?”
Y/N ignored the apparent lie and narrowed her eyes in thought, teasing, “I’d prefer to fight you instead, actually.” Than to face Shangqi, remained unsaid. Nonetheless, she groaned before slowly moving in the direction where Shangqi had wandered off to.
Y/N cursed her quickly beating heart in her chest once her eyes met the broad shoulders of the man who had shunned her from the minute of Wenwu’s seed of mistrust. Shangqi had sought refuge at some sort of shrine which honored his departed mother.
Nervously licking her lips, Y/N was careful not to disrupt the sentimental mood he was in when she softly spoke, “What was she like?”
“I don’t remember,” Shangqi uttered with a grunt.
What a load of crap.
Her eyes focused on the tenseness of his shoulders ever since he sensed her presence. “That’s a lie,” Y/N paused, letting it linger in the air, “I might have been taken by the operatives of the Red Room off the streets of Koronadal when I was a young girl, but I still remember my mother as I cling to any kind of memory, I still got left of her.”
Shangqi jerkily shook his head, almost like he was in denial. “I can’t do this.” He turned his body and walked with brisk steps in her direction, but he averted his eyes as he tried to escape her.
Y/N would have none of it when she deliberately stepped in front of Shangqi. “Can’t have this conversation? Tell me something, what bothers you more? The fact that I used to be a Black Widow or that you found out from your father?”
Shangqi exhaled heavily through his nose as he braced his hands on his waist. His eyes wandered around before he exhaled with a grunt, “I’m not – that’s not –” With a glare, he gazed directly into her eyes. “Were you ever going to tell me?”
Y/N felt heat rise in her, almost in provocation from Shangqi’s defensive tone.
Well, two could play this game.
“Were you?” she asked with a counterquestion while her eyebrows rose high and felt silently confirmed through Shangqi’s clenched jaw. “See? It wouldn’t have mattered who you were or who I was because that part of my life was over.”
Y/N narrowed her eyes in speculation before her voice shifted into a whisper, “You know, it’s strange. I didn’t blame you for who your father is, but still, I never thought you would be the one to judge me instead.”
Shangqi tilted his head, refusing to believe her innocence which strangely hurt before he taunted, “Kind of far-fetched though, isn’t it? A Black Widow getting together with the son of the most dangerous terrorist in the world. I mean, what are the chances?”
Her eyes widened.
“Wow, and I thought I had issues with trusting people.”
Shangqi crossed his arms. “Was any of it even real? What you told me?”
Y/N deflated with her next exhaling breath. “I never lied to you about that. How I’m … scared of crowds of people or that I’m sensitive to sounds. When you grow up in the Red Room where all the girls were only allowed to speak when the operatives allowed us to, you tend to … loathe some noises.”
Y/N snorted in derision. What was the point of all of this? “Maybe Yelena was right. I was fooling myself into thinking I could have a normal life. To share my life with someone, be happy. To forget who I was.”
Y/N stroked her arms, hating herself for being vulnerable like that in front of him. Dejectedly, she shook her head. “But what does it matter? Nothing I say is going to change your mind about me. Why bother?”
Remembering how much Y/N tried to stop Shangqi from leaving and realizing the irony of it as she attempted to go with a twist of her body.
The warmth against her lower arm caught her by surprise before she glanced down to find Shangqi had caught her arm as his hand lingered. “Wait. I don’t – I can’t – This is too much. I can’t think about … me and you when there’s literally the fate of the universe at stake.”
“I get it,” she sighed before ruffling her fingers through her hair. “Anyway, your sister is going to deny it when asked but she thought it’d be a good idea to have that talk.”
A smirk tugged at Shangqi’s lips. “Didn’t take Xialing for being a romantic.”
“Yes, it’s hard to believe.”
Inhaling slowly, Shangqi gazed at Y/N with a pondering expression. “How high are the chances that you’re going to leave this place and get back to San Francisco?”
Y/N tilted her head at the suggestion. “And accidentally bump into your father? Very unlikely, Shangqi.” She pursed her lips. “Only you would reject the help of a Black Widow.”
“I just want you safe. I don’t want you to get hurt because of me. I get it, you’ve been trained by the best of the best, but…”
Not having expected that, something softened inside Y/N at Shangqi’s confession. They weren’t exactly the best at being vulnerable, as much as Shangqi tended to wear his heart on his sleeve. At least one of them had to. Trying to make him feel better and to alleviate his worries, Y/N spoke softly, “I’m not that well-versed with the magic stuff, so don’t hold it against me for not wanting to fight on the front lines.”
Shangqi exhaled deeply. “That’s a relief. Just …” His hand lingered in the air, as it hovered a few inches above her cheek before he finally stroked her skin. Warmth blossomed from within her body at the familiar touch. “Promise me you’ll be careful.”
Feeling her cheeks redden, Y/N felt hypnotized by his dark gaze. “You too.”
“Promise me we’ll talk later.”
Y/N nodded once before she smiled fondly at Shangqi’s insistence. “I promise. See you on the other side.”
“Not if I see you first,” Shangqi whispered quietly.
