Poplarware woven on a loom: this craft has a staple of the Canterbury Shakers' industry. Screened cabinet owned by the Canterbury Shakers and used to store food the Shaker sisters had canned. There are still chalk marks on the shelves designating where different food went and when it had been canned (see bottom right)! Some of these markings date from to when the sisters' had a World War II Victory Garden. We were so delighted to find this. I love its story and the classic Shaker green stain. Lawn chair, manufactured circa 1930-1960 and owned by the Canterbury Shakers...aka a curatorial choice embodying my burning desire to wear sleeveless shirts again when SPRING finally decides to commit to being here. When @kiralyle and I first caught sight of this little lady in storage, our hearts stopped and we grabbed each other. Even all folded up, we immediately knew this old gal had to be in our chair exhibit. When we returned to fetch her to be carried across the frozen New Hampshire tundra to the exhibit case, we unfolded her and put her together to see if she was in ok condition and not too large for the case...The moment of truth. When we found she was JUST small enough to fit AND was practically spotless...it was one of those moments when I felt that God does look out for me after all. This lawn chair may seem out of place in an exhibit of Shaker furniture, but after seeing vintage photos of the 20th century Shaker sisters and their visiting friends reclining in this very seat, cold drinks in hand and hearty smiles on faces, it seemed like such a crucial part of the village's story to include alongside the serious ladderback chairs. Table setting (a work in progress) in the dining room of the Dwelling House at Canterbury Shaker Village. We based this setup off of pictures of the sisters dining in the 1950s. The table and chairs were purchased in 1939 from a Massachusetts company while the ceramics are an ivy pattern, though the sisters often mixed and matched china. Some sliding barn doors worthy of @joannagaines in the North Shop of Canterbury Shaker Village, New Hampshire. The space was built in 1841 as workshop space for the Shaker brothers and sisters, who would sew, weave poplarware, make bonnets, etc. in the upstairs rooms. The lower level has a large storage space for wood, which this door opens up to.
