Omnidirectional build Mk0
I got hold of a cheap little driver in London for £15. It's rated for 200W peak power, 40Hz-10kHz (so sadly not much high frequency once the lamellae are attached!) I removed the rubber sleever and the dust-cap
Next I used some grocery-store plastic sheeting (what they put up promotion signs/prices with) that can be moulded using hot water. I used a metal grille bent into a curve to make curves out of the plastic, then cut them into roughly the right shape. I made the paper shape guide by just rotation a ruler held at one end - this was totally eyeballed and could've been done much better, more precisely etc.
Then I attached some sticky-backed weather stripping to each of the lamellae (aka petals), and used double-sided tape to stick them onto the speaker cone. I used a log with a notch cut into it, attached through the speaker magnet's central hole with a long screw, to hold the tops of the lamellae.
Then with a bit of wiggling and more double-sidede tape I attached all the lamellae together at the top. I used some washing up gloves cut into strips as (very makeshift) gaskets to mostly seal the gaps between the lamellae. Again, I used double sided tape to do this. To be honest that was the most fiddly part. Washing up gloves cut with scissors are not an ideal Radialstrahler gasket material!
And there it is! It doesn't sound terrible on its own, but as the driver is only rated up to 10kHz (and who knows what impact the radialstrahler build has on the theoretical frequency response!) I had to wire it in to an old bookshelf speaker's tweeter to get a bit more high-end.
I'll make another post with a few more videos of it playing, along with some discussion of what I've learned so far to take forward to the next prototype!

A-T-4 114 Jah Shaka Meets Mad Professor At Ariwa Sounds
Jah Shaka pops in at Mad Professor's gaff in pursuit of a greater dub. This is a split album one side Jah Shaka the other Mad Professor. Jah Shaka's side is more stripped down, I think he preferred to keep things small and intimate in the studio where Mad Professor is at home and having a party. I prefer the Zulu Warrior side but first

The reggae pioneer and record producer Jah Shaka, who has died suddenly in his late 60s, was a giant of the British sound system scene. In a career that lasted more than 55 years, he transformed the sound system landscape with a distinctive and idiosyncratic style, eschewing the dominant trends to focus exclusively on contemporary reggae that was spiritually uplifting and politically relevant, presenting the music as a means of inspiration and empowerment for the disenfranchised and oppressed.
At the many dances he held in diverse underground spaces, playing on an ancient and archaic Garrard turntable in a trance-like state, Shaka would chant messages of encouragement as well as exhortations of transcendent devotion to Rastafari, adding custom-built effects and live percussive elements to increase the dramatic tension.
Through his masterful use of components such as a pre-amp, a syndrum and a homemade siren box, he made the sessions visceral and immersive, boosting the subsonic bass frequencies at regular intervals to create a transportive and transformative experience. He reinforced this shamanistic persona by not revealing his given name or other details of his personal life.
An integral part of the black community of his home base in Lewisham, south-east London, during the late 1970s, Shaka deployed a sonic wizardry that made a dramatic impact on the post-punk music of Public Image Limited and the Slits, whose members were then among the few white attendees of his dances. Broader audiences became aware of his importance when he appeared in Franco Rosso’s evocative 1980 urban drama film Babylon, playing himself at a south London sound system session as the action draws to a climax.
Jamaican reggae subsequently underwent dramatic changes during the mid-80s as the dancehall style came to the fore, its output largely preoccupied with lasciviousness, violence and frivolity. British sound systems inevitably embraced the new style, but Shaka opted to become a lone voice in the wilderness that kept the roots reggae flame burning, advancing an up-tempo homegrown variant that became known as UK Steppers.
With a backing band he dubbed the Fasimbas after a local activist group established in response to the discriminatory treatment of black children in the British school system, from 1980 Shaka also produced original music with upcoming unknowns such as African Princess and Sister Audrey, as well as self-produced work.
He went on to produce reggae vocalists such as Bim Sherman, Johnny Clarke, the Twinkle Brothers, Max Romeo and Horace Andy, and released an impressive series of dub albums, including collaborative works with Aswad and Mad Professor. In the same period he ran a three-storey community hub in New Cross, known as the Culture Shop, which acted as a focal point for local black youth and housed a record store, a Caribbean food outlet and a Rastafari-oriented hair salon.
Although his record productions did not achieve much mainstream success, they were consistently popular with his core audience, and, more importantly, the uniqueness of his sound system would ultimately inspire acolytes such as Iration Steppas and Zion Train, as well as various sound system operators across the world.
Shaka spent his infant years in rural Clarendon, south Jamaica, before his parents moved the family to the UK in 1956 in search of betterment. They settled in south-east London, and it was while attending Samuel Pepys comprehensive school that he began an apprenticeship on the local soul sound system Freddie Cloudburst, beginning in 1968 as a “box boy”, helping to transport and set up the speaker boxes.
Later he ensured that the amplifiers and speakers were functioning properly, and finally became the resident selector to showcase work by Nina Simone, the Temptations, the Drifters, Diana Ross and other Motown acts. Then, after being inspired by activists such as Marcus Garvey, Malcolm X and Angela Davis, as well as his overarching Rastafari faith, he formed his own sound system in 1970, which he named Jah Shaka after the Zulu king.
Armed with exclusive dubplates and a powerfully commanding presence on the microphone, Shaka soon began building a name on the sound system underground, triumphing at many a sound clash. But along with the accolades came tensions with the police, who raided a dance he held in Brockley, south-east London, in 1975, beating attendees and damaging his equipment.
Undaunted, Shaka established a residency at Phebes nightclub in Stoke Newington, north London, in the late 70s, followed by another at Club Noreik in Tottenham, and was crowned the top sound system at the Black Echoes reggae awards in 1980 and 1981. His audience widened during the 90s, when he enjoyed a popular residency at the Rocket, adjoining the University of North London (now London Metropolitan University).
Shaka made his first pilgrimage to the African continent in 1984, and established the Jah Shaka Foundation in Ghana in 1992 to distribute medical supplies, library books and other materials to schools and medical clinics. He also undertook charitable works in Ethiopia, Jamaica and Kenya.
His extensive touring schedule took him throughout Europe and to Japan, Africa, Mexico and Peru. He became a regular festival headliner while mentoring his son, known as Young Warrior, who became a leading sound system practitioner and record producer in his own right.
Noted for his stamina and for presiding over all-night sessions without a break, Shaka continued to command large audiences at events in the UK and abroad.
He is survived by his extended family.

Hi! This is my first time making an ask on this blog (though I have read through your SIX posts and tortured Elisabeth with way too many strange asks hehe). If you don't want to answer this costume question no worries, but thanks for taking the time to read this?
I have some double Bryony/Liv ask(s).
What happened to Bryony's Seymour skirt? She brought her other two skirts to London but not that one? (Esp. after her Howard skirt had broken down a ton and was looking quite sad.) Are Seymour skirts just inherently more fragile?
When Liv went on as Aragon, she wore the Grace-style Seymour skirt. However for her cruise run she wore the traditional black Aragon skirt. So I'm assuming she wore Grace's (as the only other existing one was Mallory). Is her top also Grace's or is it her own from the ship? And why didn't she wear it for her early Seymour debut instead of the band costume?
Whose Cleves costume did she wear? Was it perhaps one of Lexi's or Shaka's old iterations?
Don't worry. Interesting asks are always welcome. We might take a while to answer for a few reasons including, procrastinating on photosets or proofreading, waiting for photos, someone forgetting we left an ask in drafts and just didn't post it, me doing a billion things and not having enough time to sit down and write an answer or elisabeth's massive ask backlog.
What happened to Bryony's skirt is anyone's guess. We know many if not all the Bliss 1.0 and Breakaway 1.0 costumes made it to london in the summer before tour reopening and Breakaway 2.0 starting rehearsals. But why Bryony never got her Seymour skirt (or second top) has never been explained. Same with most of Natalie's costumes.
I have two guesses: either it was decided two skirts were enough or more practical or it was an issue with sizing. We know the biggest issues that six costumes had during lockdown were related to temperature and humidity. But that affected the vinyl specifically which the Seymour skirts don't have. What actually breaks down first in the costumes is the boning on the skirts as it is not meant to hold those shapes. Boning is intended for cosetry or bodices where it is shaping something it is fully laying against and slowly molding to that shape or hoopskirts where it heavily relies on the tension of closed circles or elipses not free standing open skirts where it keeps the same straight or curved shape forever.
As for sizing Howard skirts are the easiest to resize; depending on the construction is either moving the closure or changing the waistband. And we know some alterations happened for the tour costumes including the Jodie turned Vicki skirt getting a new waistband. We have never checked but that might be the case for Bryony's howard skirt too. During her universal alt run her Boleyn skirt seemed to have a mind of its own and moved a lot (as in it rotated during the show) which points to a small size change. While the Howard and Boleyn skirts might have been taken in a Seymour skirt would need to be at least partially taken apart and reasembled for that and they might have decided it was not worth it. Also I dont think it was the plan for Bryony to be on that much as the tour had four alts and WE four then five so two skirts might have been considered enough for the few shows she was expected to do.
About Liv's costumes. We know those at least partially made their way to the UK as Natalie wore an altered version of Liv's shorts instead of her own. Again no clue why Natalie got new pants and Cleves jacket and didn't get either her or Liv's Aragon skirt or Cleves jacket and top. But Liv joining Breakaway appeared in her program bio very early on her universal alt run so it was planned since at least the middle of tour rehearsals that she would only stay as universal alt for a few weeks. Potentially altering multiple costume pieces for such a short amount of time was probably more complicated than fitting her with existing costumes.
The black costume she wore is indeed Grace's minus the sleeves. Her black alt costume was the updated design with cutouts while the one she wore on land was the old one with mesh and a lighter colored vinyl. And yes only two costumes that existed in that design are Grace's and Mallory's.
And her early debut was actually an emergency mid show cover a few days before her planned debut. She also wore the band costume for tour tech the previous week so I think the costumes she ended up wearing were a little behind on prep work (something as simple as logistics didn't work out to go get them out of storage sooner could be the reason). Also by her planned debut date she had costumes so things did go as planned in that regard. And the Cleves costume she wore was Shekinah's.

Selection Show
Yay! Morehead State! I always like seeing the smaller Kentucky colleges get in.
So clearly this year Vermont is my second favorite team. Go Catamounts! Whatever the hell that is.
Why do they always put Duke and Kentucky in the same region? Every year, if at all possible, they try to recreate The Shot; that goddam 1992 game that traumatized us all.
Also I hate that Marquette is in Kentucky's region too. I love Shaka Smart but I'm not going to cheer for him against Kentucky. And of course their first round match is Western. Fffffff. WKU has the best mascot ever. They couldn't have given Western to another 2? They couldn't have put Marquette in a different region? Sheesh. I'll cheer for them gladly against Duke though if they beat Western and UK. Of course I'd cheer for almost anybody against Duke.
Kansas got a 4. Somehow Kentucky got a 3. 🤷 Not complaining but I just don't get it.
Man, that Kent State game was a heartbreaker. Not a part of the selection show, but I felt so terrible for that kid. They just showed where Akron was on the bracket and it made me think about it.
Go St. Peters. I'll be cheering for whoever plays Tennessee this year almost as fervently as I cheer for who plays Duke this year just for you, man. I'm starting to hate the color orange. What's up with that? 😂
One of the Capital One commercials with Chuck and Spike and Samuel L. Jackson this year is a take on That's What Friends Are For. They got Dionne Warwick to sing and everything, man. I swear that's you. 🥹 Not crying watching the damn selection show though. 😝
All the upset conference tournament winners messed up who got in this year. The TV guys won't stop talking about it like it's a disappointment, and I guess it obviously is for the teams who didn't get in. They're talking about 'stolen' bids. But I like that. Best part of March is the underdogs who win. They didn't steal anything. They won. If the teams who supposedly had their bids 'stolen' would have won, then they'd be in. 🤷 Quit yer crying and play some basketball. 🏀😂
I'm watching like you're with me starting Thursday. Be there with bells on. 🔔🔔🔔
#talking to myself#March#it is fucking bizarre and wrong that we're not going over this bracket together right now#miss you kiddo

Reviving this tumblr page 10 years down the line, to post some updates on my upcoming Omnidirectional speaker project
In brief: I want to design and build a set of speakers that play high-fidelity, omnidirectional sound, for the primary purpose of running UK/Jah Shaka style dub and reggae sessions.
I'm currently most set on Awassa Sound System, but really like the relevance and cheekiness of Omniscience Sound/Hifi. I think Awassa has a better ring to it, and an air of mystique, even.
Here's a breakdown of the plan so far:
As for order of operations: Step 1:
Make a cheap and cheerful prototype of the MBL drivers. I just want to cut my teeth on the hardest part, to start building familiarity with the materials, principles, and manufacturing processes that will be involved in the build of the larger, final version.
If my friend who's into CAD and CNCing is willing, have him whip up some test lenses.
Use recycled drivers from old, cheap speakers as much as I can to keep initial exploratory costs down.
Find an active cossover unit that I can use to test different crossover frequencies with the different driver designs
Step 1 will be considered finished when I either have a working, not-awful-sounding radialstrahler, or have decided to abandon that aspect and am comfortable focusing on other methods for making omnidirectional sound.
Step 2:
Work on the other parts of the tower, namely the horn-loaded lens tweeter, the mid-bass lens, and the lower cabinet (lots of flexibility for internal design with the cabinet).
The cabinet (and maybe the horn lenses) will require learning to use a speaker simulation software
The bass scoops can come later, as there's not a lot of point building small/low-power scoops
As soon as I have a sense of what the appropriate crossover frequencies will be, order a custom dub preamp such as the RasFX Mini Pre
Get a set of relatively affordable power amps to drive the whole thing. 4 channels for a single tower to start with
Step 2 will be considered complete when I can gift (for cost of materials) a MK1 pair of these speakers to a friend of mine who's into sound system too - and of course build a set for myself!
Step 3:
Assuming everything goes smoothly in Step 2, work on scaling everything up. Size, power levels, etc. The rough goal is to be able to power a party with around 100-200 people. Maybe more, eventually
Try to figure out a way to be able to retain the functionality of a dub preamp for playing reggae, but also run the system in stereo for when I want to play
Build a set of scoop style subwoofers. The more, the bigger, the better!
Step 3, and thus the main body of the project will be considered complete when I have a fully functional, high-power sound system able to at least impress, though maybe not directly 'compete with', the current generation of younger sound systems like Indica Dubs, Ital Power, Creation Rebel, King Majesty, Sinai, and other such outfits.
-------------------
Step 4:
If everything up until this point has gone very well, and I feel confident with the various technologies, try to develop the designs to a point where it can stand as a single 'totem pole' style tower that can play to a decently-sized crowd of people.
I picture taking something like that to e.g. Boomtown Festival, and decorating it in all sorts of wacky space-age or mystical art. I think the fung shui of a single, central sound source would be really unique in a festival setting.
The big barrier is that omnis, when places inside, rely on walls and surfaces to create the feeling of 'omnipresence'. Outside, I'm not sure that'd work at all, let alone
Step 4 being complete would inherently require my sound to be powerful enough, high-enough-fidelity, and well-known enough to be included when people talk about "well-established" sound systems. The totem pole thing is a bit of a gimmick, let's be honest.
------------------
Imaginary step 5: If my work on this project can inspire more people to think outside the proverbial speakerbox when it comes to building reggae sound systems, I'd be a happy camper!
