NDM in Tarot Cards
1/7
I decided I wanted to make a little series with tarot decks themed around the characters in Na Daoine Maithe/ The Good People.
Shae

For Shae, I've picked the Spirits of the Woodland Tarot by HedgePinkInk.

Featuring nature - Shae really has the energy of Spring, they live out in the woodlands, and their garden is always vibrant with all their plants.
Woodland creatures - Shae has the disney princess vibes that have them interacting with all sorts of little magical creatures, so I liked this for that reason.
Art style - the fact that you can see the the individual strokes of the art gives it a very sweet, homey character that I feel suits Shae so well.
Colour palette - I think that the dominance of green and brown tones suits Shae and their cottagecore vibes very well.
If you click the tag "NDM in tarot" you'll see my other posts in this series :)

Still fixated on @moiraimyths The Good People (Na Daoine Maithe) that I developed an AU where my MC, Moninne "Ninna" McGill, was a novice nun before winding up in Tir Na Nóg. She still has to deal with being mistaken for the Seelie Court Druid. Meanwhile Daonna is also mistaken for Ninna by the Novice mistress before taken to the convent. Sure Daonna is probably already familar with acts of charity, considering they've been giving medical treatment to common people in game with the queens blessing. However whatever religious ceremonies, rites, and prayers Daonna learned as a Druid are probably much diffrent then the ones done at a Catholic nunnery.
Shae: Daonna! Where have you been?! Do you have any clue how worried I was? What are you doing here? Why are you all...wet? Where did you get these robes?
Novice mistress: Sister Moninne! Why did you dissaper like that?! You know novitiates aren't supposed to leave without permission! Where is your veil and tunic? Goodness, child you're soaked! Now come with me! We'll get you a dry habit, before talking to Mother superior!
Daonna & Ninna: What? No I'm not...

The Good People (Na Daoine Maithe) | Official Trailer
The Good People (Na Daoine Maithe) is a lore-rich and choice-driven historical fantasy visual novel inspired by Irish mythology and Celtic folklore. Play as a tenant farmer from mid-19th century Ireland, whose path becomes inexplicably entwined in fairy affairs after getting robbed by the roadside and lured into the mythic and war-torn world of Tír na nÓg: A once unified land, now divided into the Seelie and Unseelie Courts. Will you escape and return home with your stolen belongings? Or does fate have something else in mind?

Eager to play? Certain route content is available NOW in early access on Steam and Itch.io! For more information, click below👇
Meet the Cast
Facts & Questions: The Game
🍃 The Good People (Na Daoine Maithe) is a Kickstarter-funded project currently in development. Due to the scope of the story, we will be releasing it serially over several years to Steam and Itch.io, and discounting it while in early access. The earlier it's bought, the cheaper it will be overall, and you'll only need to buy the game once!
🍂 Not all routes are currently available! As of Nov. 1, 2024, you can play half of Shae and Maeve's routes; both approximately 50k words. If you're not sure about paying for an unfinished game, feel free to check out our free demo first. It consists of Vol. 1, Book of the Traveller (the pre-route content). Differences between the demo's Vol. 1 and the paid game's Vol. 1 are marginal following our August 1, 2024 re-release of the demo.
🍃 The Good People (Na Daoine Maithe) has a recommended reading order (Vol. 1, then 2, then 3, etc.), which will correspond to the release order of the routes. For more information on our reasoning behind this, click here.
🍂 Due to its setting, The Good People (Na Daoine Maithe) will occasionally feature instances of characters speaking in Gaeilge, i.e. the Irish language. All instances of Gaeilge are linked to an internal translation tool, which is voiced by Nigel McKeon, a Gaeilgeoir.
🍃 The main character is yours to shape. At minimum, you must choose a nickname, pronouns, and one of four default appearances, the last of which can be your own artwork (instructions are included in the game's files). You may also choose to discard the True Name…
🍂 All routes, both current and upcoming, will have both romantic and platonic choice options. If you're uninterested in romance, feel free to make friends instead! No matter the nature of your relationship, you will still be able to reach the good end. (Want to learn more? Refer to this post!)
🍃 Our cast consists of two men, two women, and two non-binary characters. All are romancable no matter the MC, but some characters are asexual or on the aromantic spectrum, which may impact aspects of their romances.
🍂 If you are a Mac user and are having issues launching the game via the Itch direct download, refer to this guide for troubleshooting before sending us an ask. We strongly recommend purchasing the game through Steam instead of Itch if you are a Mac user; it is the best way to avoid issues with launching the game.
🍃 NDM is very intentionally set just prior to the onset of the Great Famine, which is both thematically and textually relevant to the leftist, anti-imperialist story we're aiming to tell. If you would like more insight into this, refer to this post.
🐎 There are secrets to be found in this game, with more yet to come. Prepare yourself for a lot of horse related shenanigans. 🐎

ROs' names in ogham
Ogham is the first writing system in Ireland, first used in to write Primitive Irish. It is usually seen carved into ancient standing stones found around the country.
So anyway I thought it would be appropriate to write the Na Daoine Maithe characters' names in it. Ogham is read from bottom to top, and due to Tumblr tomfoolery, you may have to click the image to see the name in full.
Not everything transliterates literally however. There are no fadas in ogham, so Aífe and Flannán lost fada privileges. Keagan is technically written as "Ceagan" due to the lack of the letter "k". There also is no letter "v" in Irish so I wrote Meave's name in my personal favourite way, "Meabhdh".
Bonus! Tadhg (my MC)

Shae Birthday Gift 2023: Líadain
Has stolen some tree saplings from a druid temple on the Unseelie side, haphazardly growing them in different places in both sides. Shae receives one as part of this: it is a magically enchanted field maple sapling. If they grow it and grow it well, they’ll be able to grow and make their own maple sugar.

Is it possible for romance to bloom while mixing platonic and romantic choices? Sometimes the flirting gets a bit too overt or I just feel the platonic choice suits the mood more (especially often with Shae) so I was curious about how this might work! Do I need to pick romantic choices n number of times to get it on the right track or will it be fine if just sprinkled occasionally?
Short version: Yes, you can absolutely mix your choices! Long version:
There are a lot of choices in NDM. Some are general flavour choices, others are good/bad ending choices, and the remainder are choices that impact your relationship with the cast. When those latter choices are selected, one of these little icons will appear briefly in the top left of your game: A heart, two hands, or a crown.
Heart choices are the most romantic-coded choices; overt flirting, amorous expression, kissing, etc. They're the type of choices you'd generally expect to see in a romance game, and their purpose is to signal that you're pursuing a character romantically.
Hands choices are the more platonic-coded choices; congeniality, friendly ribbing, hugs, etc. If you find yourself faced with two choices and one seems more romance-y than the other, then that second one is most likely a hands choice and will signal your intentions as friendly.
Now if we stop there with our choice options, we run into a bit of a problem: By themselves, these options feel superficial, or too rigid for realistic relationships. Flirting alone does not a love affair make, and who hasn't kissed their homies goodnight before?
This is why we have crown choices. These choices are essentially neutral relationship points that could be plausibly romantic or platonic; gestures of loyalty, positive affirmations, expressions of care, etc. More importantly, if you -- the player -- decide to mix and match your heart and hands choices such to the point that they're essentially even or within a reasonable margin of error, the crown choices will allow you break the tie toward your preferred ending.
Ergo, let's say by the end of Shae's route, your relationship choices are 49% hands, 41% hearts, and 10% crowns. Hands (or the friendship ending) is leading by a teensy amount over hearts, but you really want the romantic ending. In this scenario, you'd be prompted in-game to answer how you perceived your relationship with Shae, which would turn your crown stat into the hearts stat, tipping it to 51%, which secures you that romance end. Same choice would be presented if you incidentally or intentionally had a plurality or majority of crowns over hearts or hands.
Ultimately, we want our players to be able to define their experiences and choose the relationship choices that feel most natural, without necessarily needing to worry about tallying up how many times they opted for smooches over hugs. So have fun! As long as your choices aren't majority heart or hands, you won't be too "boxed in" to one path or another.
#ask#clotho answers#the good people#na daoine maithe#visual novel#otome#dating sim#interactive fiction#friend sim#relationship anarchy#or our closest approximation within the confines of a game wherein we have to “define” romantic and platonic (intent) in a coding sense#in order for said choices to have an impact on the game/create a sense of natural progression#turns out the tapestry of human expression is difficult to perfectly gameify#also our arospec characters will be subject to some variance in terms of what they deem romantic or platonic
