Prompt for April 12: Favorite Villain

THIS MOTHERFUCKER. This conniving, egotistical, power-hungry bastard. Other than Lucemon and maybe Crusadermon, there’s no other multi-episode villain that takes nearly as much sick joy in being the absolute worst. What puts Mercurymon ahead of Lucemon for me, and the rest of the crowd the gang faces really, is that even though he has an enormous amount of pride, it never stops him from considering the very real possibility that he could fail - it’s why he’s so desperate for power in the first place. He acknowledges the growing strength of the kids outright and tries to deal with it accordingly, which WORKS for a while. He has absolutely zero qualms about betraying ANYBODY, even those who could squash him with no trouble at all. Duskmon was scary in his relentlessness, but Mercurymon has that AND the creativity to match. Also?

This was terrifying. Duskmon always had an air of “This could have been avoided” even if it wasn’t necessarily true, but what the fuck do you do about this? Turns out the answer is cheat ‘cuz that’s the only reason Takuya’s still here and not in the LITERAL FUCKING COFFIN BACK THERE. That thing bumping down the stairs fuck anyone else up ‘cuz it sure did me!

The fact that this guy has a Shakespearean accent in the dub is both hilarious and extremely fitting.

Frontier Fest Day 13

APRIL 19: Favorite episode/moment

Episode 22 - As previously stated [Here] The episode where Takuya returns home as Flamon is my all time favorite. I actually just re-watched it the other night (Japanese Version) and my gods Junko Takeuchi sell it. Not to discredit Michael Reisz he does a fabulous job here too, but her panicked cries and terrorized voice overs sound so genuine. 

To recap, I love this entire episode front to back and it narratively accomplishes a Time travel/loop/dilation Very well and they can be super tricky to write- I know I’ve tried.

Random side note- BOTH of the VA’s for Takuya in English and Japanese nearly blew out their voices with all the yelling/screaming/growly voice work. So much so that Dave Wittenberg took over the voice for EmperorGreymon because Michael refused (also did the movie) and Junko begged to have Kouji’s VA voice Susanoomon. Voice Actors deserve better.

Bonus side note- Miss Junko also provides the voice for Naruto.

Episode 28 - Also as previously stated, ShadowSeraphimon is hands down amazing and criminal that we only get him for part of one episode. The way he goes after Takuya, he comes within mere inches of killing the boy. It’s brutal, it's dark and once again Junko is on absolutely point and Mercurymon’s VA,   Masutani Yasunori, is so damned diabolical. Even the Dub does a great job here, even with Mercuruymon’s ridiculous Shakespearian thing.

One; I'm just gonna assume that they saw Takeru and Patamon getting chased by a Fangmon and Sora didn't just like being hidden in Komondomon's fur for whatever reason

Two; lol Patamon is dead

Three; and how is Joe not dead, I mean he is being swung around by a Blossomon upside down, why does he have the worse luck?

Four; and while Joe is on that position, Mimi over here is having the time of her life with a bunch of Gotsumon watching a boxing match between Togemon and Golemon. And this isn't a "hey I want to eat you" battle this is solely just for fun

Five; at this point I'm not even listening to what ever Koushiro has to say about the real world, it's really always the same thing

Six; and Patamon is dreaming about angles, which means Lopmon. I'm happy to see Lopmon again and wondering can she sense Patamon's dismay? It does seem to be revealed that Lopmon isn't the Holy Digimon alongside Patamon and Tailmon

Seven; "who is it? No I know who it is, I just can't remember" You'll remember buddy! You both were a Celestial Angle! Also Lopmon patting Patamon is cute

Eight; Patamon voice is so cute ಥ‿ಥ

Nine; "the light of hope to brighten the world" I hope that sentence will be more relevant later on since you know, it's the little ones crest and their partnered to the holy digimon

Ten; while Takeru tells Patamon that flying is like swimming and he'll stay by his side (which is such a cute moment) the others just watches intensely

Eleven; oh, so now they get affected and hurt by explosions and they were able to stay on their Digimon while they were being thrown around by a bigger stronger digimon

Twelve; so Seraphimon got sunk into the maisma after the war and got corrupted into ShadowSeraphimon but then he remembered Takeru and got purified but devolved into Angemon. Now we really needs a couple of flashback episode during and after, maybe even before, the war

Thirteen; and Pegasusmon! Aesthetically, Pegasusmon does make more sense for Patamon to evolve to than Angemon, but I like Angemon better (as you can clearly tell) but this does make me worried that we wont see Angemon for a while, especially since we are already half way through the series and he still have his ultimate and mega form to evolve into

Fourteen; how did Takeru not throw up, or fall off? Pegasusmon literally went upside down dodging attacks and done a dozen front flips has a attack. And I am also disappointed that Garudamon and MetalGreymon helped him finish him off, like I know it's only one attack but I wanted to see his wing shooting star attack

Fifteen; haha Sora and Taichi looks like a married couple

Sixteen; the next episode is called "Hikari of Dawn" and I thought this was supposed to be called "Light for Dawn" which got me thinking, did they mistaken Light for Hikari? Since you know Hikari is Light in Japanese

I am hoping my SkullKnightmon is Tailmon theory is right, and I think the next episode will prove if it is or not (or if it's DarkMaildramon who is Tailmon). Hikari looks pretty creepy in the preview (rewatching the preview now and I'm exaggerating) and the full translated preview did say that Hikari gets absorbed into SkullKnightmon (yes, you heard me right, absorbed) and Taichi tries to grab her hand but she pulls away and willingly absorbs into SkullKnightmon, which makes my theory more plausible

FrontierFest, Day 6

Favorite Villain

Y’know how I said Frontier was a lot like Sailor Moon? Well, it’s more than the sentai team dynamics and transformation sequences. It’s about the villains, too! Particularly for the “original” four of Cheribumon’s generals, with all of their internal bickering, evil-henchman politics, one-upmanship, and backstabbing. It’s very much in the same vein as the Shitennou/Four Heavenly Kings or the Ayakashi/Spectre sisters from Sailor Moon and Sailor Moon R, which was my first exposure to that sort of villain dynamic, and I loooove it. These people (or digimon, or what-have-you) have interests and goals and motivations and relationships outside of just doing whatever the big bad boss-guy says or being evil for evil’s sake. It makes their antagonism so much more dynamic and human and interesting to watch.

Mostly, my love of this dysfunctional group of baddies is down to the choices made with Mercurymon and Ranamon in the American English dub. I LOVE Mercurymon’s pseudo-Shakespearean way of speaking, and how he can be poetic but surprisingly blunt. Everything he says is just so much fun (“Art thou blind? Thou art a TWIT!”), and you really get the sense that he is insufferably proud of being the smartest guy in the room, or at least he thinks he is. And I love Ranamon’s sugary-sweet Southern belle, who is incredibly vain and loses her composure at the drop of a hat (“How dare you insult me, Ah am a LADY!”). She’s such a brat! And then when you have Grumblemon being Angry(tm) and Arbormon only half paying attention, and Duskmon lurking in shadows being all aloof and competent, like… man, that is my jam. I LOVE that stuff and could have watched it play out for 20 more episodes!

Slight preference for Ranamon as #1 fave, because when Sakkukamon was inert, he was one heck of an Eldritch horror, but his plan took way too long to execute for what it really was and his downfall was swift and felt a bit anticlimactic once he was more active. Bonus points for ShadowSeraphimon though, that episode was *chef’s kiss*. Calmarimon is quite intimidating and has a fun design/attacks, and other characters being repulsed by her appearance and her issues with control always felt like they tied directly to her personality flaws (plus obviously we're rooting for the good guys here!), so it's satisfying to watch, rather than frustrating. Another plus is that even though Ranamon TRIES to drag Zoe into her jealous rivalry thing, Zoe is just too good for that and only responds to Ranamon in defense, which… if you’re going to do the token-girl-hero vs. token-girl-villain thing, that’s definitely not the worst way to approach it. Ranamon is just so petty, and that makes her a really fun and memorable villain. Plus without Ranamon, there is no Toucanmon fanclub. Love those little doofuses who barely have half a brain cell to rub between them!

Digimon X Transformers!

So as I did with Prime, it’s time to see what options Megatron has for Digimon partners. Megatron was a bit harder for me because yes he’s evil but there’s obviously more to him. He is Ambitious, Extraverted, Observant, Organized, Structured, Methodical Pragmatic and Systematic. He would call a Digimon his partner but more his servant. Those traits are what led me to coming up with partner options for Megatron!

Option 1: Impmon

Option 2: Shadowseraphimon

Option 3: BlackGatomon

Option 4: Cherubimon (Evil)

I think it is pretty easy to see why I picked these for Megatron and of course there are more than just these four that could go well with Megatron!

Digimon Adventure Episode 32

My little pony edition?  (spoilers I guess.)

-        Pretty short recap this time.

-        Has Patamon ever run before, as opposed to being carried or flying?

-        Patamon digivole toooo…fatigue mon

-        Good pup bodies naughty pup

-        Let’s trust Gomamon, not like Jou’s one of the important characters anyway.

-        Urgent alert, people are telling lies online.

-        Lopmon is a jedi

-        So Pata-Tail are the last real holy Digimon? Is that’s what’s happening?

-        Lopmon has shown at least as much power as Patamon, so what are the holy Digimon’s real strengths?

-        Learning to Digivolve is like learning to swim: sometimes your brother just throws you into the deep end and you either learn or you die.

-        That’s Cerberumon, he could be a threat, so long as we don’t bust out Wargreymon.

-        It’s a good thing Fangmon bit a flesh arm this time, less people will complain about greymon feeling pain.

-        Komondomon the real mvp

-        This would also be a good time for Wargreymon, guess Taichi is just not feeling brave enough

-        Oh so now explosions can hurt kids, but Taichi can ride a missile into a tree sixty feet of the ground and it does nothing.

-        Is the implication here, after nominally winning the ancient war, Seraphimon got captured, submerged in the miasma for eons, (the miasma that burned metalgreymon to the touch and was even able to weaken El Dradimon), and was able to endure it all based on the pure thought he might meet Takeru someday?  Talk about the embodiment of hope

-        Yes I noticed the slight shift to Shadowseraphimon before he rejected it and devolved.

-        This feels more impactful than the mega evolution

-        Also more courageous, Takeru is clearly scared, Sora tells him to run, Patamon can’t take on one Fangmon, let alone a pack and Cerberumon but they still press on.

-        Dang, they didn’t go patamon Soaring mode ☹

-        You may thing Pegasus mon looks bigger, but no, Reboot Takeru’s just that small.

-        Did Pegasmon deal with those fangmon easier than Garudamon-Metalgreymon?

-        Those aerial summersaults

-        “Aim for the mouth.” Works 100% of the time, 60% of the time.

-        How is Takeru not sick?  Stomach of cast iron that one.

-        Can’t even let Pegasmon beat the Monster of the week in his one debut /s

-        Komondomon has 8 legs, so I guess they are norse puppies.

-        “The Hikari of Dawn” is a terrible title, “The Light of Dawn” is only moderately better.

Frontier Fest Day 6

APRIL 12: Favorite Villain

I mentioned this on April 8th. Yet another one time character, ShadowSeraphimon. Mercurymon on his own is diabolical and downright lethal, but with the added power of Seraphimon. My gods. His whole reveal, the drama, the stakes. So good.

It’s not clear when Mercurymon decides Takuya is his arch nemesis or if he just enjoys playing with his prey in general. Like if it were any of the others would he have toyed with them in a similar manner? Or is it because Merucrymon recognizes Takuya as the leader and knows that his companions can see him from the outside and aren’t able to reach him to help?

Mercurymon likes to be over-the-top dramatic in all his exploits, so the evolution to ShadowSeraphimon is such a spectacle. Might explain the ridiculous Shakespearian accent they gave him in the dub now that I think about it. 

ShadowSeraphimon takes the already lethal mentality of Mercurymon and dials it to eleven. He is fierce and elegant, and my god does he show it. He absolutely brutalized the crap out of Takuya and is one of the few Digimon this season to really thrash the kids hard. It’s the “Oh Shit he’s gonna kill Takuya” moment that really cemented it for me. Especially the OG Japanese version, the sound effect choices really sell ShadowSeraphimon vice gripping Takuya’s skull.

Partner: Falcomon Digivolution line: Puwamon-Pinamon-Falcomon-Peckmon-Crowmon-Ravemon-Ravemon Burst Mode Crest/Digi-Egg: Reliability

Matt met his perfect partner when a large black egg came out of his computer one late night. He had been editing the podcast, half asleep, and only really realized something was going on when the screen froze and turned whiter than an angel’s wings. The egg formed and appeared on his lap with a small device. He hadn’t been high or drunk, and was almost positive he was dreaming. It wasn’t until all the other guys, and some others online, had eggs, too. He made a joke about turning it into breakfast. “Think we can turn it into breakfast? How do you like your eggs, guys?” “I am not food!” A tiny voice had stated loudly. Angry little eyes on a brown tuft of fur glared up at Matt, then softened with joy. “I’m Puwamon, your partner!”

As Puwamon grew to Pinamon and then Falcomon, Matt learned to care for and love the creature. It wasn’t until Falcomon turned into Peckmon to save Matt that he realized just how much he cared for the ninja bird. Their bond only strengthened as they grew together.

Partner: Gatomon Digivolution line: SnowBotamon-Nyaromon-Salamon-Gatomon-Angewomon-Ophanimon/Mastemon (w/ BlackGatomon) Crest/Digi-Egg: Light

Jay’s partner transcended the regular Rookie stage, going to full Champion. Jay and Mason were the only two to have permanent Champion-level partners. They’re also the only two with partners that DNA digivolve to Mega level together. Jay fell in love with SnowBotamon from the start, especially knowing his best friend had the same Digimon. She only got cuter as she grew, eventually branching off from her sister and becoming a white angel. She and Jay sing together all the time. Like Jay and Mason, Gatomon and BlackGatomon tend to encourage each others’ antics.

Partner: BlackGatomon Digivolution line: SnowBotamon-Nyaromon-Salamon-BlackGatomon-LadyDevimon-Minervamon/Mastemon (w/ Gatomon) Crest/Digi-Egg: Hope

It’s no surprise that Jay’s partner and crest match perfectly, and they match him, but Mason didn’t think his matched at all. He had a black cat that turned into a lady demon, and his crest was Hope. How had he managed that? He wasn’t ever hopeful of shit. Okay, he was, secretly. The little black and purple creature was hopeful, too, but never showed it. They complimented each other perfectly, as they did with Jay and Gatomon. BlackGatomon was the brains to Mason’s brawn, helping him keep a level head and not run head first, stupidly, into danger, like he so often wanted to.

Partner: Lalamon Digivolution line: Nyokimon-Budmon-Lalamon-Sunflowmon-Lilamon-Rosemon-Rosemon Burst Mode Crest/Digi-Egg: Love “Fuck yeah! I get a sexy woman as my partner!” That’s the first thing Toby said as he faced almost certain death in a big fight. Lilamon rivaled LadyDevimon and Angewomon, but Rosemon’s appearance was Toby’s proudest moment. “I’m a proud mother.” He had commented after the fight was over. He and Lalamon are always out shopping together. He often gets her matching accessories. The two are always looking after the others, too.

Partner: Renamon Digivolution line: Relemon-Viximon-Renamon-Kyubimon-Taomon-Sakuyamon-Kuzuhamon Crest/Digi-Egg: Courage

Cam’s perfect partner was a fox, but one that was even taller than him. A small furball grew into a towering beast that he loved more than anything. He enjoyed when she moved to all fours in her Champrion form. He was taller than her again, but her ultimate form and mega form towered over him again. Her “extra-mile” evolution, Kuzuhamon, scared him at first. Had he been too prideful in her and made her dark digivolve? She had become almost scary with her dark color scheme, but she assured him that she could only achieve this form with his help. It was the best form she could turn into, and very few of her kind did.

Partner: Kotemon Digivolution line: MetalKoromon-Kapurimon-Kotemon-Gladimon-Knightmon-Crusadermon Crest/Digi-Egg: Friendship

As the only member of the group to not have a partner with an “extra-step” in their evolution line, he was lucky enough to get a borderline God as his partner. Despite his pink coloring, Crusadermon identifies as a male that gives no fucks. “I am pink because it’s a cool color.” He always says when Toby asks and when Mason makes fun of him. He shuts shit down like Negan would, proving to Swagger that he is his perfect partner, through and through. It was cool to have a tiny little guy with a mask hiding his face and a stick to fight with. It was cooler to have a little fat knight, and even cooler still to have a bigger knight. Yet, Crusadermon took the cake in all his pink glory. It was like his childhood fantasy coming true.

Partner: FanBeemon Digivolution line: Pupumon-Puroromon-FanBeemon-Waspmon-CannonBeemon-TigerVespamon-Grademon Crest/Digi-Egg: Sincerity

Obviously, Bianca was gifted with a Bee Digimon as her perfect partner. FanBeemon was adorable, but definitely bigger than the average human bee. She and Bee quickly became best friends and did everything together. FanBeemon formed a crush on Kotemon, sometimes getting into trouble just so he could save her. She enjoyed becoming Grademon just to prove she was better than he was, though.

Partner: Palmon Digivolution line: Nyokimon-Tanemon-Palmon-Togemon-Lillymon-BanchoLillymon-Rafflesimon Crest/Digi-Egg: Knowledge

Palmon and Lalamon were as good of friends as their human partners were. Palmon, however, had quickly formed a crush on Falcomon. Unlike her other friend, FanBeemon, she didn’t try and get into dumb situations to be saved. She admired from afar, but proved her own strength, too. She once saved Falcomon and Matt, but they, too, had once saved them. Palmon would never forget the moment Crowmon had swooped in and saved her, as Matt leaped off of his back to catch a falling Brodie. Lillymon and Lilamon were close in design, but BanchoLillymon was “epic,” according to Toby. She was a gothic beauty that became even more gorgeous when she took the extra step to becoming Rafflesimon. Much like her other female counterparts, all the boy Digimon swooned over her. Except the one she wanted most.

Partner: Vorvomon Digivolution line: Mokumon-DemiMeramon-Vorvomon-Lavorvomon-Lavogaritamon-Volcanicdramon-AncientVolcanomon Crest/Digi-Egg: Vanity

What’s better than a goddess for a partner? A dragon that is made of lava and smoke. Vorvomon is adorable and fierce, and a little vain. He often steals John’s rings because they are “shiny” and he likes them. The two also have contests to see who can blow more smoke. John’s vape tricks amaze the small dragon, but in his final form of Volcanidramon, he out smokes anyone. He’s proud of this fact, too.

Partner: Gomamon Digivolution line: Pichimon-Bukamon-Gomamon-Ikkakumon-Zudomon-Vikemon-Plesiomon Crest/Digi-Egg: Desire

What’s more Canadian than a seal? One that turns into both a Viking beast and a mythological Cryptid dinosaur. Jaren refers to Gomamon as “Bappo” from time to time, for no other reason than to piss the little guy off. Gomamon hates the nickname, but he loves his partner too much to truly be mad. He’ll never admit it, but after a while, he gets used to it. The two are a perfect pair, and match John and Vorvomon. Vorvomon is a fire monster, while Gomamon loves the water. They’re perfect best friends.

Partner: Patamon Digivolution line: Poyomon-Tokomon-Patamon-Angemon-MagnaAngemon-Seraphimon-ShadowSeraphimon Crest/Digiegg: Kindness

Okay, so you’d think the kind of Raccoons would get a Raccoon as a partner. Sadly, none exist, so he is stuck with an orange hamster with wings. Patamon turns into an angel, and by his “extra step,” is dark and beautiful. Ezra jokes he made him this way with his dark humor, but the idea of the angel of kindness and hope forming into a shadowy fallen angel terrified him at first. It made up for not being a Raccoon and for being a literal religious being. Ezra wouldn’t admit it, but Angemon had better hair than he did.

Partner: Bearmon Digivolution line: Punimon-Tsunomon-Bearmon-Grizzlymon-Pandamon-BanchoLeomon-Callismon Crest/Digi-Egg: Guts

Nelson was surprised to get a partner at all. But Bearmon, with his cute little snapback, was perfect. He couldn’t be happier to have him. How the little bear turned into a grizzly, then a panda, than a goddamn lion in a suit, and then to a bigger grizzly bear with guns for hands, he didn’t know, nor care. He loved his little buddy more than anything.
