Summary

After finding an odd ring in white space game Shadow is thrown into a different dimension. Unbeknownst to him his counterpart is thrown into his world when he does this. Upon acquiring a ring of his own game Shadow is able to return to his own world safely and he forgets about the whole experience for a while. Though in a dull time he finds himself thinking about it again. Perhaps he should return, just to check how things worked out.

A Place to Stay

Summary: Shadow makes his way to Sonic's home after returning to his own world. The hedgehog seems happy to take him in, and thankfully his family doesn't seem to mind.

Shadow felt rooted to the spot as he took in the house. At the moment he was standing in the treeline observing Sonic's home. He felt a lot like a stalker but he couldn't force his feet to move. They were hurting after he'd struggled to find the right home, that was disregarding the nightmare it'd been to even find the right town, so he chose to blame his hesitation on that. Despite the confidence he'd gained from his time with the other world's Sonic he found his doubts crawling back. Perhaps he should just go. Tough out his injuries alone.

"Shadow?" Sonic's voice was there suddenly, quiet but oh so hopeful. Shadow turned to see the other hedgehog standing there, eyes wide and body trembling slightly. Sonic's entire face lit up before he launched himself at Shadow. The hug was far less gentle than the one the other world's Sonic had given him. It felt desperate and it also hurt a fair bit as the other hedgehog aggravated some of his injuries. Shadow let it happen though, because for as comforting as the other Sonic was, Shadow needed this. Real confirmation that Sonic would be willing to help. Confirmation that he cared. Shadow simply grit his teeth and ignored the pain for now.

Finally Sonic pulled away, the other hedgehog taking Shadow in more carefully. A look of guilt passed over his face as he no doubt noticed the bandaged and treated injuries scattered over Shadow's form. Before Sonic could say anything, Shadow held up a hand. "It's fine."

"If you were hurt you should have said something." Sonic frowned. "I didn't mean to hurt you..."

"It's fine. Really." Shadow sighed. "I've been through much worse."

"Still." Sonic hesitantly walked forward and ghosted a hand over some of Shadow's bandages. "Are these from the explosion?"

"... and the fall back to Earth." Shadow's voice came out far softer than he'd intended.

Sonic's face looked distressed for a moment before he took Shadow's hand. Instead of saying anything he gently tugged Shadow towards the house. Shadow hesitated but the allure of getting off his aching legs broke down the resistance quickly. The two silently walked to the house, Sonic leading him. The house was quiet as they entered. Peaceful. A large dog padded over to sniff curiously at him. "It's ok Ozzie." Sonic patted the dog on the head. "He's with me." Ozzie gave Shadow one more sniff before going off. Shadow closed his eyes in relief once Sonic pulled him to sit on the couch. "You ok?" Sonic sounded concerned.

"Just happy to be off my legs." Shadow sighed and opened his eyes. "They were the worst injury out of everything. I was advised to keep off them as much as possible for a while."

Sonic perked up. "Someone else helped you?"

"Yes." Shadow hummed. Presumably Sonic should know about Shadow's counterpart. Though he had no idea if they'd actually met. Sure his counterpart had said he was going to check up on things but that didn't necessarily require him to interact with Sonic. "Your own counterpart helped me." He gestured to the various bandages and things on his body.

"Wait." Sonic looked excited. "You've met the alternate me!? What was he like? Was he anywhere near as cool as me? Does he have any weird scars? Does he have my dashing good looks? Is he as fast as me? Does he-" Sonic stopped when Shadow held up a hand.

Shadow sighed. "Yes. A lot less annoying than you. I would say cooler. Not that I'm aware of. He more or less looks the same. I'm not sure what his top speed is but he was fast." His ear twitched as he put his hand down. "Disregarding his appearance I could tell who he was immediately, though he was rather different from you."

"I find it hard to believe he's cooler than me but..." Sonic narrowed his eyes. "You just haven't got to know me well enough yet."

"If that's what you want to believe." Shadow leaned back and closed his eyes again. He heard Sonic settle down next to him. "You met my counterpart, right?" Shadow decided to break the silence. His own curiosity starting to nag at him.

"Yep!" Sonic sounded upbeat. "He was a lot more agreeable than you were when we first met that's for sure. Can't say his timing was all that great though."

Shadow opened his eyes and looked over at Sonic. "Oh?"

"Yeah." Sonic chuckled. "Dude showed up not long after you beat us into the ground. To make things weirder he looked just like you at the time, but he did this whole funky turning into a squid thing and I was more inclined to believe he wasn't you."

Shadow face twisted up in confusion. "He did what ?" Of all the things he could have been prepared for Sonic to reveal about his counterpart that had been nowhere even close to his radar. Turning into a squid? Why? How?

"Turned into this weird squid thing. Bunch of eyes. Kinda freaky but also oddly cool?" Sonic frowned. "Didn't think to ask him about it when he was here last. I was way more focused on other things. Maybe when Tails gets his interdimensional chatroom thing all set up I'll ask." He tapped his arm. "You can't do that... can you?"

"No." Shadow was quick with his answer. "At least I don't think so." He amended because he actually wasn't 100% certain. Not like he'd ever had reason to try. "I don't know anything about where I came from, so I guess I can't rule out the possibility actually." Sonic gave him a pleading look as he leaned forward. "No." Shadow narrowed his eyes. "I'm not trying to do that right now. I wouldn't even know how."

Sonic sighed. "Fine. Maybe I can get some information for you from other you next time he's here." He flopped back on the couch dramatically.

"I assume it would be wise to let myself heal first anyway." Shadow huffed.

"Yeah you're probably right." Sonic sat up and shrugged. "But you didn't say no to trying eventually." He grinned. "So I'll take that as a win." Shadow simply closed his eyes again and leaned his head back. He expected Sonic to keep chattering at him but surprisingly the room stayed quiet. His ear twitched as he heard the sound of Sonic's even breathing next to him. Guess the other hedgehog had fallen asleep. Perhaps it would be best for him to rest as well. He forced his breathing to even out and drifted off to sleep.

"Sonic." A female voice said. Shadow glanced over to see a female human walking into the kitchen he and Sonic were sitting in, one he didn't think he'd seen before but was probably a resident of the house. Likely the wife of the man he'd nearly killed. He flinched internally at that revelation.

"Maddie!" Sonic sounded nervous. "Morning..."

"Were you planning on warning us we had a guest?" Maddie gave Shadow a smile and brief nod, he returned the nod.

"Would I be in less trouble if I said yes?" Sonic tried to put on an innocent face. Shadow couldn't help but snort in amusement at the display as he took a sip of water.

Maddie sighed. "Just... explain how this happened." Sonic opened and closed his mouth several times, but ultimately said nothing.

"I managed to find your home not too long after returning to this world." Shadow decided to help Sonic since the hedgehog seemed a bit tongue tied at the moment. "Sonic found me outside and brought me in."

"He's hurt and needs a place to relax while he heals." Sonic gave Maddie a pleading look.

Maddie's face softened as she looked over at Shadow. "Well... as long as he doesn't cause any trouble I don't see why not." She walked up to Shadow. "Do you mind if I take a look?"

Shadow took a deep breath and nodded. "By all means."

Thankfully Maddie was very careful in her inspection. Every once in a while she gave approving nods or frowns. "Well it looks like whoever patched you up did a good job." She smiled at him. "How are you feeling?"

"In some pain." Shadow took another sip of his water. "Mostly my legs. I was advised to keep off them for a while."

"I assume this came from whoever helped you." Maddie took a couple steps back, something Shadow was thankful for. "If you don't mind me asking actually... who did help you?"

"His counterpart." Shadow gestured to Sonic.

Maddie blinked. Shadow blinked back. "Sounds like this counterpart of yours is a bit more responsible." Maddie looked over at Sonic, grinning.

"What? I'm plenty responsible." Sonic put a hand on his chest in offense.

"He seemed rather familiar with what he was doing." Shadow hummed. "Lots of practice I'd say."

"Well I know I banged myself up a lot before I started living with Tom and Maddie. I got pretty good at treating myself too." Sonic shrugged.

"Morni-" A male human, Tom Shadow recalled, walked into the room. The man's arm was in a sling and his walking was clearly uneven and slow. Shadow quickly averted his eyes, locking his gaze on the floor. He didn't move as he heard footsteps approach him. As a hand gently landed on his shoulder he couldn't help but startle. "Hey buddy." Tom's voice was oddly gentle. Shadow managed to peel his eyes away from the floor to look at Tom. "I forgive you ok?"

Shadow pinned his ears back. "I nearly killed you. How can you forgive me so easily?"

Tom backed up, and Shadow watched him carefully. "Well last I checked I'm still around." He chuckled. "Sonic told me about you. Your past. Plus, you ended up doing the right thing in the end. As long as you don't try and do anything like that again we're cool."

"If you say so." Shadow looked away and finished off the water in his glass. Of course he didn't really believe Tom, but there was no use in pushing the issue.

"Guys!" Tails excitedly flew into the room, seemingly oblivious to Shadow's presence.

"No flying in the house." Maddie's reminder sounded like she'd said that quite often.

"Oh sorry." Tails rubbed the back of his head. "But I got it working!" He showed off some sort of... phone? Shadow made a mental note to catch up with current technologies. A lot had changed in 50 years.

"Oh no way!" Sonic rushed over to look at the device. "Already? You really are a genius buddy." He ruffled the fur on Tails' head.

"Well I need to test it of course but..." Tails batted the hedgehog's hand away, but there was still a massive smile on the fox's face.

"Hey don't go down playing yourself." Sonic lightly punched Tails in the arm. "You're probably the first person ever to build something like this. Be proud of yourself."

"Thanks Sonic." Tails gave him a bright smile. As the fox turned to presumably come sit down he seemed to finally notice Shadow sitting there. "Shadow?" Tails' ears perked up. "You're ok!" He grinned and hopped into the seat next to Shadow.

"Found him outside last night." Sonic hopped into the chair on Shadow's other side. "How bout you fire that thing up though? I need to talk to other me."

"I think I'll only be able to lock on to something the other Shadow has on hand for now Sonic." Tails began tapping away at the device. "I don't know what else to look for yet."

"Well I bet he can get a hold of other me." Sonic balanced his head on his hands. Shadow decided to keep to himself for the moment. A way to communicate with their counterparts? It seemed far fetched and yet...

"Alright establishing connection... now!" Tails tapped once more on the screen and waited. Eventually the device beeped and Tails' grin grew. "Connection established! Now to just send a test message to make sure we've got the right person..."

"Oh! It's gotta be something interesting." Sonic stood up in his chair. "Can't be something boring like hi."

"We should keep whatever it is simple." Tails' namesakes swished. "Just in case I don't have the right person."

"I got this." Sonic grabbed the device and quickly typed something out before anyone could stop him.

"Sonic!" Tails sounded annoyed as Sonic handed the device back. Sonic just gestured to the screen with a grin on his face. Shadow sighed at the display but looked down at the thing.

Tails

Yoooo this Sonic. Is this edgy hedgie number 2?

"Never try to call me that." Shadow narrowed his eyes at Sonic.

"Me?" Sonic put a hand on his chest dramatically. "I would never."

"We're getting an answer guys." Tails pointed at the device.

Shadow

Whoa ho this is interesting. Hey there other me! I miiiiiight have Shads communicator right now. Gonna assume your Tails set this thing up. Just what I'd expect from the smartest guy I know.

"Impressive." Shadow hummed.

"Yes! It works!" Tails pumped a fist in the air.

"Good job Tails." Maddie patted him on the head.

"Knew if anyone could do it, it'd be you." Tom patted him on the back.

"Let me talk with him. I have questions." Sonic made a grab for the device.

"Just don't go too crazy." Tails pushed the device towards him.

"Me? Never." Sonic grabbed the thing and started tapping away. Shadow glanced between everyone in the room. The potential to talk directly to his own counterpart was tempting. There were a lot of questions he wanted to ask, but he would wait for now. Sonic seemed to be enraptured with chatting with his own counterpart and Tails was muttering something about making more devices so they didn't all have to share one. Shadow shut his eyes and considered the situation he was in now. Did it beat being alone? Maybe. It would just take a lot of getting used to.
