SPOILERS FOR THE SUBSTANCE:

I think the most interesting and even ironic thing about the substance is the fact that in the ending when elizabeth sparkle is nothing more than a pile of bloody body parts and organs, when she only moves or walks via her head, when she goes through all that agony just to lay on top of the star…it looks like the most content or at peace she’s been throughout this whole movie

I love it when I see people producing some of the most drop dead gorgeous and unique art pieces I've ever seen in my life and they're churning those puppies out like they're being paid in hundred dollar bills by the brushstroke but all of the art is of some pairing between two ugly old men from some obscure media property that maybe 10 people in the world care about. I’m halfway through summer and I barely got a barn, I have bought nothing else from Robin (like it’s literally being built rn)

I don’t know how to get syrup from trees (I know one of the characters keeps mentioning a “tapper” or whatever but I have no idea where to get that)

So many characters don’t have any hearts (but Shane somehow has 6?? This dude is so easy to befriend??)

And I only just found out that you’re allowed to just walk into people’s homes (was waiting for an invite)

My character is perpetually broke and other characters keep coming to me with their money/job woes and I feel like I’m supposed to fix that but like how???

And I wanna go into in the sewers so badly but I forgot who they said had the key now I gotta look stuff up 😭 also gotta figure out what’s up with buying hats from that mouse (got the letter, haven’t found the mouse)

Also!!! I missed the dance!!! Cause I couldn’t figure out where tf it was in time!!!!

Did you know that Changheng, Danyin, Jieli, and Xunfeng are all show only characters

I saw this ask during a break at work earlier and I have been boggling at this information all day because WHAT?????? How do you even HAVE THE STORY?

Danyin and Xunfeng, I can accept. Danyin is my best girl and a wonderful addition to the story, but most of her screentime is spent reacting to Changheng--resenting Xiao Lanhua's importance to him, trying to protect him, doubting her own self-worth because of him, etc. etc. I'm looking forward to seeing what the reveal of her parentage adds, but the theme of "war is bad and so is ethnocentrism, especially when they break up relationships" is pretty well covered as is. As to Xunfeng, he has potential, but I forget he exists a lot of the time because he has even less to do onscreen than Danyin does.

JIELI AND CHANGHENG, THO

Like! Jieli! Thematically, she's there as a foil for Xiao Lanhua; shrewd, abrasive, and fearful of vulnerability while Orchid is a sweetheart who believes the best in people and is honest about her emotions. Her journey re: accepting her emotions and opening herself up to relationships mirrors Dongfang Qingcang's, albeit coming from a different origin story. And plot-wise, SHE'S THE ONE WHO MOVES IT ALONG. Her chaos brain is what kept the entire Yunmeng Lake arc going! And without Jieli to talk to, how is Xiao Lanhua going to puzzle out her internal conflicts or external problems like "what does this prophecy mean" and "how do I get out of this tower"? Just inner monologue the whole time? Boring!

AND CHANGHENG. GOOD GOD. I... I can't even envision how the story would go without Changheng. He's such a huge source of tension in the story! He's the reason Xiao Lanhua ends up meeting Dongfang Qingcang in the first place! He's the reason she ends up running afoul of Ronghao and Haishi! He represents the good parts of Shuiyuntian! His arc of learning to balance duty with his own beliefs and desires is such a lovely counterpoint to EVERYONE ELSE'S ARCS. He makes Ronghao's whole deal feel more connected to the two leads, and helps Ronghao himself be a more nuanced character. Changheng is a prime example of an antagonist who is not a villain because he is straight-up a puppy dog. And from the tropey romance standpoint, he is SINGLEHANDEDLY one of the main sources of conflict in Xiao Lanhua and Dongfang Qingcang's relationship. Without all the baggage surrounding Xiao Lanhua's longtime attachment to Changheng, what on earth is keeping them apart for that long?

And for that matter... why is Xiao Lanhua so stubbornly faithful to Shuiyuntian if she doesn't have friends there? With no Changheng who keeps trying to rescue her, and no Danyin who comes to respect her, what does she have? Does the version of her in the novel spend time at court and bond with the other immortals there? Do they suck less? Is Arbiter actually present? "I love this man, but he is obligated to obliterate my country, and I honestly can't fault his logic because my country mistreats and wants to obliterate his" is kind of the WHOLE CENTRAL CONFLICT.

I remember being like WAIT FOR REAL?? when I found out that everything with the Department of the Unfaithful as well as the whole Dynamic between Zhao Jing and Xie Wang in Word of Honor were unique to the drama, but they operate distinctly enough from Wenzhou's whole deal that I can see how the story could still, you know, happen. It wouldn't have some of my favorite aspects, but it would still exist! But here? Genuinely I cannot picture what that would even look like.
