Six Flags Great Adventure First-Time Trip Report 8/11/23
Driving up to this park and seeing Kingda Ka is a feeling like no other. I can't even describe it. We spent a full day at the park, and it was awesome. With my only previous Six Flags experience being SFOG, I didn't have high hopes for the park itself, but I was pleasantly surprised by how nice it was. The operations were solid too. We didn't wait too long for anything, other than Superman, which I regret to this day. But the one-two punch of Toro and Ka is probably the second best of any park I've been to, in close competition with Hershey's WR and Skyrush combo.
Coaster Rankings and Thoughts
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1) El Toro (x 8 rides, including 5 night rides) -- WTF is this ride!!!!!!!!!!! I am BLOWN AWAY. I cannot BELIEVE this is a wooden coaster, because the ridiculous forces it provides are simply unlike those on any other wooden coaster. El Toro takes the cake for my favorite first drop and also has three more of my favorite airtime moments, with the two subsequent camelbacks and the Rolling Thunder hill. I don't know about the actual numbers, but I know the feeling, and these four moments feel like the most powerful, most sustained ejector airtime moments I have ever experienced. The name of this ride is so fitting, as it truly does feel like it is trying to eject you into the sky, like a bull trying to throw you off its back. Aside from the ejector airtime, I also love the chaotic twister section at the end of the ride that throws you from side to side. I hear people calling this ride rough a lot, and there is a pretty bad rough patch on the turnaround after the camelbacks, but the rest of the ride is perfectly smooth. I had a strange experience with the roughness of this ride. Most of my rides were in the back car in the front and middle rows 16 and 17, as well as one ride in the back of the second to last car in row 15, and one ride in the back of the third to last car in row 12, and the only ride I found to be painful was the ride in row 12, which was one of my roughest coaster experiences ever. I can't understand what the big difference could be, as I rode on wheel seats further back without issue. But I also already had a bad headache on this day, so that couldn't have helped. Anyway, the night rides on this coaster were absolutely transcendant, the ejector was absolutely addicting, and I never wanted to stop riding.
Tumblr media
2) Kingda Ka (x 3 rides, including 2 night rides) -- I am obsessed. Ever since I got really into coasters, these Intamin stratas have been the most amazing structures to me. Just standing near Dragster or Ka and looking up at their sheer size is incredible. I never got the chance to do Dragster, but to actually get to ride Ka? My god. I think the criticism of "one trick pony" that I so often hear from enthusiasts on the internet regarding these rides is such a pedantic thought to even have after an experience like this. Ka is now truly a one-of-a-kind experience. The force of the hydraulic launch is absolutely mind-blowing. The whole track shakes as you fly down the launch, gaining a ridiculous amount of speed. People without taste might call this a "rattle," but I call it "intensity." Haha. The launch feels like it lasts forever and ever, and I love that it's not just a split second and it's over. You can feel the continuous acceleration like a car changing gears for the whole 3.5 seconds. And before you have a chance to process the launch and how fast you are going, you get crushed with the forcefulness of the pull-up into the top hat, then shoot straight up, 456 feet into the air. The views from the top of the tower are breathtaking, and the airtime coming over the tophat in the back row is awesome. Barrelling back, straight down the tophat and reaching those ridiculous 120+ mph speeds yet again is a sensation like no other. My ears would pop every time we came back down from the top due to the rapid elevation change. There is no adrenaline rush like the one this ride gives, especially at night, when you are just launching straight up into the darkness. Running back and forth between Ka and Toro at night was one of the highest highs of my life, and I will constantly be chasing that feeling for the rest of my existence.
Tumblr media
3) Nitro (x 3 rides) -- I love these older, 2000s B&M hypers. Nitro easily makes my top 3 for this ride model, as it has a much more interesting layout with a much more varied array of forces than most of the newer hypers. (Goliath and Nitro have the two best hyper layouts that I've done, but Diamondback remains high up there for the sheer quantity of airtime.) Anyway, back to Nitro. The big camelbacks give good, sustained floater, and the helix into the midcourse gives some great positives. The ending run of smaller hills is a fantastic finale, with every single one, including the drop off the midcourse, giving some of the strongest airtime moments you will find on a ride of this model.
Tumblr media
4) Batman (x 1 ride) -- There is nothing to say about this that I haven't already said about the SFOG Batman. I love B&M inverts, and I love this compact layout that is absolutely packed with positive Gs and whip. It doesn't run as fast as the SFOG Batman, but it's still an intense and fantastic ride.
Tumblr media
5) Jersey Devil (x 3 rides) -- I don't know what my problem was with this ride exactly, but I think it's probably better than I'm giving it credit for. I don't know. I wanted a back row ride, but I could never get it with the stupid moving station set-up. The closest I got was row 9 (of 12). I rode 3 times and still don't have a good feel for the layout. No elements really stood out to me as I was riding. There are definitely some strong airtime moments in the first half, and I like the inversions in the first half with the stall and the zero-g roll. After the midcourse, the ride doesn't do much for me. Also, the hard, over-the-shoulder restraints are pretty restrictive and limit the airtime. I think I need more rides, because I liked it, but I definitely didn't love it.
Tumblr media
6) Medusa (x 1 ride) -- This is a standard B&M looper. It's nothing unique or amazing, but it's a good ride with a nice variety of fun inversions and solid positive forces throughout. It's basically impossible for me to differentiate between these B&M sit-down loopers when they all have the same elements, maybe in a different order. I think it's funny that this ride is literally Kumba exactly, almost exactly the same height and track length, exact same layout. Yet Kumba gets all this praise, while Medusa is rarely talked about. I do think Kumba runs more aggressively than Medusa, so I understand it. It's just funny to me.
Tumblr media
7) Green Lantern (x 1 ride) -- This park surely has a lot of B&M loopers. I like the layout of this ride a lot. The three loop variations, the swooping turns, and the double corkscrew finale are all very intense, piling the positive Gs on your feet and legs. The intensity of all those positive Gs on your feet is a crazy feeling -- feels like your feet might be driven through the floor of the train. Lantern is easily the best stand-up I have done, as it is taller, faster, longer, and has a much more interesting layout than Vortex and Georgia Scorcher, which hardly do anything at all. But taller, faster, longer, and more inversions also equate to a much more uncomfortable ride with stand-up trains. I would have to ride this several times to figure out how to properly brace myself, and I didn't have the time for that, so it was a pretty uncomfortable experience, but still a lot of fun.
Tumblr media
8) Runaway Mine Train (x 1 ride) -- This is the best mine train I've done up to this point. I love the layout. The way it goes from the tame, smooth double helix beginning to the wild turns/laterals and hills in the second half is crazy. That hill before the turn over the water?? Wtf?? It's Magnum ejector on a mine train. It was so shocking, and I loved it.
9) Dark Knight (x 1 ride) -- I like wild mouse coasters more than most people, and this one has all the great, sharp laterals you would expect along with a dark, indoor setting to make the turns and forces a bit more unpredictable. Really good ride.
Tumblr media
10) Superman Ultimate Flight (x 1 ride) -- I wasted way too much time waiting for this thing, and I regret it. I've already done the SFOG one several times. These rides just don't do a whole lot. The positives on the pretzel loop will always be a crazy sensation, but that's about all the ride has going for it, as the rest is mostly just meandering turns.
11) Joker (x 1 ride) -- I almost wish I hadn't wasted my time with this either. I don't care for these rides, and I don't really even know that they count as credits, as they don't feel like roller coasters at all. The flipping can be fun, but it's not my favorite sensation in the world. This is longer than Tumbili at KD, so I'll give it that.
12) Skull Mountain (x 1 ride) -- This is one of the weirder rides I've been on in my life. It's an indoor, dark coaster with very little theming to speak of, and it's very much a family coaster with basically no forces. Not much to say here.
Trip Details
We got into the park at about 12:30 PM. We went straight to Ka to make sure we got on it before it inevitably went down, and we were able to get on with only about a 15-minute wait. Then we went to El Toro for three consecutive rides. We got nachos from the Macho Nacho beside El Toro, then headed over to Medusa for one ride. We tried to get on Runaway Mine Train next, but accidentally got in the line for the Skyway and didn't realize we were in the wrong line until we had waited for about 15 minutes. I would have liked to get on the Skyway, but we just weren't going to have the time for it with one day at the park. So we got out of line and finally got on the mine train. We got a ride on Green Lantern next, then went to the other side of the park. We got three fairly quick rides on Jersey Devil, then three rides on Nitro that we waited about 15-20 minutes for each time. Then we got a ride on Batman, then Dark Knight, then Skull Mountain, then Joker. We then waited a stupid amount of time, probably about 50 minutes, for Superman Ultimate Flight. This was the end of the credit run, and we now had about one hour and 10 minutes to get re-rides on Toro and Ka before close at 9:30. But of course, Ka was down. So we went back to El Toro for three EPIC night rides. Then, to our relief, they got Kingda Ka back up! We ran over there as quick as we could and got two fantastic, surreal night rides! Then we sprinted back to El Toro for two more rides to close out the night. They started shooting off fireworks as the park closed, and I got some nice pictures of El Toro with the fireworks before we left.

Hi! Just learned about Bullfrog Bayou Revue at SFOG. Was wondering if you knew the specific location of the show in the park? I can't seem to find it anywhere!
Hey there!
Hm... I'm not 100% sure where the show could've been specifically located in the park but from what I remember in a comment from Storybook Amusement's video on the show (the picture below), it could've been next to where the Bugs Bunny Theatre is. I assume it's somewhere in Bugs Bunny Boomtown aka Bugs Bunny World, but I haven't been to SFOG in a few years so I'm not 100% sure and I could be wrong 😅. Hope it answers your question though

oh god his log flume opinions though. he'd probably hate shit like log jamboree at sfog but be super into like splash mountain. i think he'd rate splash mountain higher than something like the timber mountain log ride at knotts'. timber mountain has the more daring ride feel, yes, but OH THOSE ANIMATRONICS.

I have a question about the monster plantation maquettes that were sold at an estate sale back in 2019, how did you find this out? I've been wanting to buy the maquettes for so long and have been looking everywhere online for an auction just for them to be sold at some estate sale? :/ bummer
From my understanding they were owned by a former SFOG employee and were sold in their Estate sale along with a ton of other cool memorabilia...including the original sign for Monster Plantation! The week before the Estate Sale I started seeing ads through Facebook, and of course the kind of stuff being sold had caused quite a buzz with SFOG fans. I wish I could've gone but I'm on the other side of the country! Another fan was able to purchase the maquettes and they are well taken care of I can assure you! Here is a link to what was sold at the Estate Sale, some pretty wild stuff! https://www.estatesales.net/GA/Lithia-Springs/30122/2153892?utm_source=greenwayhealth.com&utm_medium=email&utm_term=30263&utm_content=Atlanta-GA&utm_campaign=2019-04-09-3DaysBefore&fbclid=IwAR3fIwxetmASyRpmWCUAwxoOSTiKfrerVmVXWYh9j-MIsPngVmdWTI5anJ8

Saw a poster at the movie theater for a Blue Beetle movie coming out this year? How have I not heard of this before? How come there wasn't even a teaser trailer in front of SFoG?

Back in late 2021 I started a roller coaster journal. It was a Mako notebook from SWO, with Guy Harvey art... My original idea was to take notes on certain coasters, note stats, ride description, personal ranking and opinions, noteable records broken and what year and I eventually wanted to write a book aimed towards helping children understand and find interest in roller coasters. I recently spotted it in my dresser and I think I have all of my reviews from BGT, SWO, Universal, IOA, and SFOG. Unfortunately I don't have photos of many coasters from the Universal parks as I haven't gone very often, and none for SFOG since I wasn't yet into photography again. Since people showed interest in my reviews I pay post some edited pages from that :,) from my baby coaster enthusiast days. Its crazy to me how far my photography skill and love had grown so much more.
Hopefully, with this trip, I'll be able to get a replacement notebook, and I want to record all of my collected credits. I am truthfully hoping to find a Pipeline notebook more than anything, but my only rule is it needs to be visibly coaster themed and not just park themed. For some reason my brain wont let me use just any notebook for this, haha.
