Covid Wanderings Photowalk moment, with the leaning subject's consent I; North Beach. San Francisco, 08-08-21.

I was walking around SF's North Beach district and saw a group of photographers, led by a man who was obviously in charge of the group's photowalk. I approached him and asked if I could tag along, and he pleasantly agreed to let me.

Now, a few times I've walked around with another photographer, taking photos and having a good time. Coincidentally, most of the time it's been with fellow Tumblrs, and also coincidentally, except for @matthewschiavello, @stephiramona, and @gedditor, the other folks are no longer posting on Tumblr. And during my time in Munich in 2018, there were 4 of us walking around (a lot) taking pictures: Stephi, Heiko, Pete, and me. BTW, Pete mostly wanted to talk politics and philosophy and kept wondering why the other 3 of us were so interested in buildings and people, and why we weren't going out and taking more landscape photos. (True story.)

But never before had I joined what appeared to me to be a photowalk led by a photo instructor. It was fascinating, though I found myself not being interested in photographing what was pointed out by the instructor/guide nor was I interested in what many of the photographers in the group seemed to gravitate toward, almost always in bunches, like they were afraid to break away from the group and be original.

And speaking of photographing in bunches, the moment I captured in this photo and another that will show up in my feed later is a perfect example. The photowalk's leader asked the leaning gentleman if it was okay for the group to photograph him and the leaning gentleman said "Yes." Then the group immediately hovered toward him, almost pouncing like paparazzi hunting for a candid of a celebrity. It felt somehow inhuman and predatory, even with the subject's consent. And maybe I should not have made the 2 photos, but I was enthralled with the show of human pack behavior, even among photographers, who I assumed would be more interested in originality and a little human dignity.

Who knew?

BTW, what struck me even more during post was seeing the woman on the left, in the background, across the street, apparently taking a photo of the same scene as I was, but from farther away. I don't know if she was part of the photowalk group.

Soon after this photo moment, I found myself separated from the group. I started making photos of a young man who had a cool looking red haired beard and who was willing to pose for me and say "Shit."

Now I wonder what the photowalk leader and the group would think of that...

Reworked Before the parade XXII: 2020 Year of the Rat Chinese New Year Parade. San Francisco, 02-08-20. (Reworked 03-15-25. You can see the original here.)

This is the 4th time I edited this photo, this time with a tighter crop and lower contrast.

I love this photo. The look on her face, her eyes searching for her next exciting street capture. And I love that she was surrounded by members of our always outstanding UC Davis marching band, their faces calm (and one slightly bored) contrasting the photographer's intense facial expression.

I look at this and wonder if she even saw me making her picture, but I guess she was so engrossed in her photography that she did not give a photographic flying fuck. And good for her, I say.
