Sexypink - Renaissance and Resistance.
This Performance piece by recent Maestro Dobel Latinx Art Prize 2023 Awardee Carlos Martiel (Cuban) reflects the great painting of St Sebastian by Andrea Mantegna (1459) Martiel uses his black body unironically in an Italian setting to bring home the sacrifice and martyrdom faced by those constantly oppressed and murdered for causes against inhumanity to man.
Mantegna chose to stand St.Sebastian up in a classical Christlike pose. Martiel chooses the fetal position to advance the action of the impaling just as dramatically.

Sexypink -Botero is an Artist whose work I have enjoyed for decades. I used to think that his sculptures came from the age of Futurism when I was a teenager. I was surprised when I realized that he was very much still working. Rest in peace Fernando Botero. The joie de vivre he brought to his corpulent people was way ahead of the body positive movements today. Thank you.
added note: Botero did not only produce plump people, he expanded the nature of cats, objects and food as well.

Sexypink - Che Lovelace - Trinidad and Tobago
& from his Facebook page...Very very excited! My first full scale New York gallery exhibition opens one week from now on Thursday 9th March at the Nicola Vassell Gallery in Chelsea.
The exhibition brings together paintings, some of which I’ve been working on for several years, all focused around the body and water.
Our relationship with water…the sea, rivers etc. here in the Caribbean is a complex one, and I have tried to translate through my own experiences what that relationship feels and looks like.
Folks in the New York area do come by and say hi at the opening (6-8pm) or check out the show when you have time…it runs until April 15th

Shannon T. Lewis  (b. 1981 in Toronto, Canada; lives and works in Berlin, Germany) is an artist of Caribbean descent reconfiguring human forms and the spaces they inhabit within her complex and vivid paintings. Lewis begins with assemblage — the forefront of her practice — utilizing fragments of form and space. Particularly inspired by social cues of culture, whimsical aspects in the work evoke a notion of freedom by examining marginalized identities.
The use of architectural elements is a recurring element, oftentimes inspired by ornate iconography. Painted and interlaced limbs reconnoiter the history of femininity and its relation to Blackness. Lewis offers a window into freedom and body politics as the figurative compositions explore surrealism. Haunting portraits derived from archival and personal sources, Lewis imbues the past and present to construct a utopian future.
Lewis has exhibited in Canada, the United States, Trinidad, Switzerland, England and Germany. She has a Bachelor of Arts from OCADU in Toronto (Canada) and a Master of Fine Arts from Goldsmiths, University of London (UK).

Sexypink - ONGOING SHOWS in BARBADOS
The Barbados Museum & Historical Society is pleased to announce that the highly anticipated exhibition LOOKA: Dismantling the Colonial Gaze is open to the public.
LOOKA: Dismantling the Colonial Gaze is a powerful collaboration between five women artists working primarily in photography- Risée Chaderton-Charles, Jalisa Marshall, Joy Maynard, Amber Newton and Kia Redman.
Tumblr media
Responding to the Historic Postcard collection of the Barbados Museum & Historical Society, the artists offer unprecedented narratives through original works, and critically engage with, challenge and dismantle the ways in which Black bodies have been objectified, dehumanised, and reduced to stereotypes through the lens of colonialism.
Tumblr media
The artists invite us to reconsider the power dynamics at play in the production and circulation of images, and offer alternative visual languages of the Caribbean that center Black agency and subjectivity.

S P O R A MYSTICA
a new environmental performance work
by   A k u z u r u
COMMISSIONED BY : The National Museum and Art Gallery of Trinidad & Tobago -
Venue : City Of Port Of Spain -Fort San Andres -
In celebration of WORLD ART DAY 2023
Themed : Performance is Art
Artist Proposal  (Posters Attached ) From The Artist
S P O R A MYSTICA is an ode to the purity of existence and the mystically imbued qualities of Spores . This inter galactic experience of the cosmic microscopic unseen suggests an inter-dimensional phenomena within the traversing patterns of Spores . Humans and animals breathe in , literally inhale millions of spores continually .
Each breath carries the essential life force of spores that makes existence a magnificent  intangible happening . Spores are a continuum of new births .
The artist through performative communion with the unseen microscopically powerful S P O R A will be attuned through various gestures and stamps of sound , movement , texture and form as her body / bodies as spore selves navigate the grounds of Fort San Andres , connecting the trees as sentinels with the architectural and mounted historical structures .
As an environmental intervention , this multi-sensorial work will most pointedly engage the surrounding ocean -the water element- which flanks the earth itself becoming an integral core of this exploration .This process as a cumulative effect will transmit the essential vibrations , toward a heightened sense of awareness resulting , in a deeply transformative experience so that a communion of elements and interstitial spaces amplifies the mystical prowess of our spore selves within the whole of S P O R A as an Omnipotent force .

Sexypink - Important Initiatives
Windrush Portraits’ is a transatlantic artist collaboration with Michael Elliot (Jamaica) and Mary Evans (UK), delivered in partnership with Kingston Creative and the John Hansard Gallery and funded by a grant from Arts Council England. Windrush Portraits commemorates the Windrush Generation and gives voice to the subsequent Windrush scandal in the UK and the issues that exist around Windrush policy in Jamaica. Each artist will be showing work from their individual bodies of work, the ‘Windrush Series’ and ‘Please Do Not Bend’ respectively, on billboards nationwide in Jamaica. Register for the launch  event, an online talk with visual artists Michael Elliott (Jamaica) and Mary Evans (UK) at 1pm EST this coming Wednesday 1st February to learn more about ‘Windrush Portraits' and the artists' practice and this transatlantic collaboration! On Wednesday 1st February to commemorate Black History Month, ‘Windrush Portraits’ will launch the first stage of a nationwide public art exhibition to transform notions around the historically ‘permanent’ nature of public art. The project engages artists in co-creating the public space and engages audiences nationwide via digital billboard broadcast of visual conversations about Windrush on either side of the Atlantic. ‘Windrush Portraits’ will have a second staging in October 2023, in both Jamaica and the UK, with new works by both artists, after a summer of collaborative exchange between the artists and various Windrush communities both in Jamaica and the UK.
