& from his Facebook page...Very very excited! My first full scale New York gallery exhibition opens one week from now on Thursday 9th March at the Nicola Vassell Gallery in Chelsea.
The exhibition brings together paintings, some of which I’ve been working on for several years, all focused around the body and water.
Our relationship with water…the sea, rivers etc. here in the Caribbean is a complex one, and I have tried to translate through my own experiences what that relationship feels and looks like.
Folks in the New York area do come by and say hi at the opening (6-8pm) or check out the show when you have time…it runs until April 15th

🖤📸🎥#ArtIsAWeapon #ExhibitOpening "Moses Sumney: Blackalachia" opens today, February 3, 4-8 PM at Nicola Vassell Gallery 138 Tenth Avenue #NYC www.nicolavassell.com @moses #Blackalachia @nicolavassellgallery #IYKYK • • Reposted from @nicolavassellgallery Nicola Vassell Gallery is pleased to present Moses Sumney: Blackalachia, a feature length performance film and photographic series created by the artist in the North Carolina stretch of the Blue Ridge Mountains during the summer of 2020. Sumney’s auteurial debut highlights issues at the center of his interdisciplinary practice, including non-binary thinking, isolation, emotional introspection and historical Black cultural influence. Raised between Ghana and Southern California, Moses Sumney is a singer, writer, and multidisciplinary storyteller, who studied creative writing and poetry at UCLA. In 2019, he received a SXSW special jury award for his video compositions and was awarded a Macdowell Fellowship for Artistic Excellence. In 2020, his first published essay, "Stateside Statelessness," appeared in Fight of the Century (Simon & Schuster), an immigration-centric anthology edited by Ayelet Waldman and Puliter-Prizer winner Michael Chabon. Sumney's critically acclaimed 2020 sophomore double album græ is described as a "conceptual patchwork about greyness". #mosessumney #nicolavassellgallery #BlackCreatives #MultidisciplinaryArtist #BlackMagic #SoulMusic #MusicIsLife #PerformanceFilm #PhotographyExhibit #ArtAndTheCity #NewExhibit https://www.instagram.com/p/CZhItDwLHXU/?utm_medium=tumblr

She Took Photos Of New York Culture For Decades. Now She’s Getting Her Due. Ming Smith is an artist, photographer, and model who has been working since the 1970s. Born in Detroit to artistic parents, she began modeling at a young age and first came to New York on a go-see, where she met members of the acclaimed Kamoinge Workshop. “I heard photographers debating over whether photography was an art form, or whether it was nostalgia,” she said. “That was my first introduction to Kamoinge, and my introduction to photography as an art form.” Smith’s work, which was inducted into the Museum of Modern Art when she was in her 20s, has in recent years gained much wider name recognition. Last year, her monograph was recognized as one of the best photo books of the year, and her work is currently being shown at Nicola Vassell Gallery in Chelsea, one of the rare art galleries in New York owned by a Black woman. “[Nicola and I] had a love affair with one another immediately, our energies clicked,” Smith said. “This was a vision that she had before, and I was just waiting for her to do it. I wanted to give her the utmost support besides loving her.” A man in sunglasses standing in front of an American flag display, with people reflected in the window behind Ming Smith / Courtesy Nicola Vassell Gallery "America Seen Through Stars and Stripes (New York), 1976" Ming Smith is an artist, photographer, and model who has been working since the 1970s.
