I got some really great advice from another blog. If you aren't following her, you should. She is beautiful, sexy, and lives the life I wanted in a woman. I was in a very bad place with the loss of my wife. I wanted to commit suicide and here comes along @lisa-i-am who was very down to earth and spent time replying to my messages. The Manananggal is a vampire with a proboscis-like tongue that preys on sleeping people, newlyweds, and pregnant women. This bloodsucker detaches its torso from its lower half and sprouts wings. What a Girlboss!

Oh ho ho. Drac you gorgeous genius. I love you. Thank you for not keeping this in a box, because a) I’m a mythology and supernatural (not the tv) girlie and this sounded familiar (I was thinking penenggalan…but they're both terrifying and I love them) it gave me a chance to dig into the origins of both a little more and b) the holy order in the Van Helsing movie (in the brief moments we see on screen) had knights from many cultures. So it stands to reason that they would be familiar with (or even come face to face with) creatures outside of Western and North American origins.

And truly…This. This was what I was waiting for. Maybe not Manananggal specifically. But…some kind of vampiric entity. It’s a vampire story! Let’s get some vampires in here.

January 1985

Dinner at Rick's was a standing appointment.

First Thursday of the month, 7pm, butts in chairs, bring a dessert if you want.

He and Eddie would eat, maybe smoke a little once Eddie re-upped his supply--but Rick's nerves were usually a little more calm when Eddie was around--and then talk about school, and the band, and about you.

Of course the talk about you was less frequent once you started joining them. Then Rick wanted to know everything straight from the horse's mouth.

"Eddie's a liar," the older man cackled the first time he asked you a question over tuna noodle casserole and homemade potato chips, and Eddie went to answer it for you. "A fibber. You've heard his tall tales, I'm sure. He's been telling them ever since I met him. 7 years old and missing his two front teeth. Lied right through the holes."

You begged Rick for pictures and it didn't take long for the dishes to be pushed to the side so you could see polaroids of a smaller Eddie, a less-weathered Wayne, a brighter-eyed Rick, and a woman with fluffy dark curls and the kindest smile you'd ever seen.

Eddie's mom.

Rick waxed poetic about how he had always been a little sweet on her, but once Eddie's dad was sent away she just needed a little extra kindness. The kindness of someone to rally the patience of the regulars over at Benny's, someone to drive her and Eddie home after a shift that one time her car just wouldn't start and it was storming outside, someone who would put her favorite songs on the jukebox because her extra change went to a nest egg so she and Eddie could get their own place someday and Wayne could get his bedroom back.

Eventually that kindness turned into tenderness, then love, and before long they were making plans to move in together. To be a family.

But then she was gone, and those plans became just another could-have-been, should-have-been.

After that first night, after you held both Rick and Eddie's hands with tears in your eyes, the invitation for Dinner was open to you.

Forever, if you wanted.

And Eddie knew you did.

Which was why Eddie was waiting in the van to pick you up.

First Thursday of the month, 6:55PM.

Typically you'd just run out just after 6:45, a saran-wrap covered dish in your hand. Eddie would drive his usual speed of fast, radio set to deafening, to get across town in record time. And the grandfather clock in Rick's hallway would chime just as Rick opened the door for the two of you.

Eddie could set his watch to the routine by now, and he had been tempted to make a joke when you got down to the car that he would.

You were just...running late today.

Which was unlike you.

He gave you a little grace period at first, a minute or two that he could easily shave off with shortcuts and a lead foot. He briefly wondered if you had some lady business going on and thought of offering to run into Melvalds for you when you got downstairs, but those few minutes quickly turned to ten and he knew that he should be well past the point of worry.

He turned the van off, made it into the building, and bounded up the steps to your apartment.

He fully intended to give Rick a call once he was inside and made sure you were alright.

But he found the door ajar.

And all thought of easing Rick's mind left him.

Instinctually and with no care for his own safety, Eddie burst through the door, only to find you sitting on your sofa, eyes wide and wet. You were still dressed in your work clothes, and there was a small wooden crate on the coffee table in front of you.

You startled at the loud bang of your door slamming against the doorstop, and you dropped the object in your hand.

"Shit." You jumped to your feet and covered your face for a moment, before you rubbed your fingers into your eyes. "Shit! Oh no. Rick. Eddie I'm so sorry. Shit."

"Are you ok?" He crossed the short distance and cupped your face in his hands. Without the distance, it was obvious that you'd been crying. "What happened? What's wrong? The door was left open."

"I'm sorry. I lost track of time,” you stammered and grabbed onto his wrists, tightly. Almost too tight for comfort, more like a plea. “A-and there was this box that got delivered and I was just…I’m sorry.”

“Hey don’t worry.” He took a few breaths to calm himself from the panic that had overtaken him when he thought you were in danger, and then leaned forward and pressed a kiss to your forehead. “Dinner's just gonna be a little cold. It’s ok.”

You gave him a smile that didn't quite reach your eyes.

"Let me clean up and then we can go," you offered.

"Sounds like a plan."

But neither of you moved.

You closed your eyes and took heavy, calming breaths. In through your nose, out through your mouth. Your thumbs caressed over Eddie's wrists; whether to reassure him or yourself, he wasn't sure.

Eddie watched your lip tremble every so often, felt your breathing change as though you had something to say...but no words came.

He wanted to say something, to comfort you, but sometimes there were just no words he could say.

Which was especially difficult for him.

So instead of trying to fill the silence in the room, he filled the silence in his own head. Or rather...redirected the noise from worry over you to...

He could see you in his mind's eye. You came home from work, you fumbled with your keys like you always did as you got out of the car. Was it waiting at the door for you? Just...sitting there ominously or maybe the mail man left it at the deli and the owner waved you in to get it.

...the crate.

His eyes shifted over your shoulder and locked onto it.

Small, covered in various labels and stamps; the lid propped against the leg of your coffee table was marked "FRAGILE" and "PAR AVION" in big red letters.

His thoughts immediately turned to the postcard you'd gotten at Christmas, and curiosity immediately got the better of him.

"Did you mail order something?" Your eyes shot open and you immediately stiffened under his touch.

Eddie knew...he knew that wasn't it, but he couldn't help but play dumb and hope you would share this with him. Share the reason you were upset. Let him in for once.

"I know my birthday isn't for a little while but..."

"Umm." Your hands slid from his wrists and you pulled back from his touch slightly; one hand moved to fiddle with the cross on your necklace. "No. My...my dad sent me some things."

It was more than you wanted to say, and he knew he shouldn't have pushed for more but...

"Is it...a late Christmas gift or something?" he asked hesitantly. "He sent you that card from Scotland."

"No...well actually he..." You scrunched your nose a little and swallowed thickly. Eddie could see a thousand thoughts race in your eyes. "He always traveled for work. Ever since I could remember."

"Ok?" That was it? "So it is?"

"I...I guess so...he always sent home things from all these different places that he thought I might like...or would be useful. Books, or...there was this one time he sent home these dried flowers and my mother thought they were for her. But in actuality...well my dad got home and they...hmmm..."

You trailed off with a frown and you looked lost. Your gaze went out of focus, looking through him rather than at him, and your breathing got heavier once again.

A broken, choked sound escaped your throat and Eddie held his hands out, ready to take hold of you, ready to apologize for pushing.

He knew that sound.

But you took a deep breath and became very still.

He had made sounds like those once.

Your jaw clenched.

You made a sound like that once and it had completely broken him, shaken him. He respected you and never asked questions about that night. And now here you were again and instead of trying to make things better he was making them wo--

"He tried his best," you said, the misery that had previously begun to wrack your body gone. "He wasn't a good father. But I wasn't a very good daughter either.

You waved your hand dismissively towards the box.

"I'll get over a...shitty late Christmas gift. Now I'm gonna get changed. And then we can go."

It was said with a tone of finality. You turned to head to the bathroom and although Eddie wanted to chase after you, to let you take out whatever anger and pain you had on him, he knew it would only make you push him away.

The bathroom door shut and Eddie's focus went back towards the crate.

All he wanted to do was grab the lid and shut the contents away. That was all. And he didn't mean to look, but he couldn't help but see.

A bag that looked like something a doctor or a traveling salesman would carry, a large silver crucifix, a dusty jar full of dried heads of garlic, and a stained handkerchief.

His gaze then turned to the object you had dropped on the floor: a worn, leather-bound book. A journal.

He scooped it up and it fell open to a page towards the end that had been bookmarked by a thin gold chain.

Eddie didn't understand a majority of text, handwritten in some sort of shorthand or language that looked unfamiliar. Manananggal was written larger than everything else, underlined, and the letters scribbled over many times to make them bolder.

On the facing page, there was a sketch of a woman, or at least...it looked like a woman. With wings and sharp teeth and claws. Her torso was separated from the lower half of her body and her entrails created some sort of web between them. A tongue slithered from her mouth and crossed the gutter and actually made up the underline.

Eddie briefly wondered if your father was the reason you knew so many folktales and monsters. He always thought it was the coolest thing about you...sometimes he wondered if you knew more than him. He had always attributed it to your religious upbringing...but...given the brief glimpse of the contents of the crate...he wondered if there was something a little more sinister.

He flipped through the pages for a moment, and while there were other, similarly laid out pages before the marked page, the ones after it were all blank.

As he flipped, the chain slid against the rough pages and rested against his fingers, and upon further inspection he found that the chain was actually a necklace with a little round medallion.

The door to the bathroom opened and Eddie immediately shut the journal with the necklace tucked inside, and set it atop the crate.

If you thought he had been snooping, you didn't mention it.

You simply gave him a sweet kiss, and pulled him out of the apartment so you could make it to Rick's for dinner

Eddie tried to push all of the questions he had away, he tried to offer you the silent comfort he knew you needed without making it too obvious. He did his best to pretend everything was alright, and that everything would be.

Then a week later, he woke up to you talking to yourself and pacing. And some thing was in his bedroom.

i weighed 225 in april 2020, up from 205 in december 2019 (no clue how that happened as life for me barely changed when the lockdowns started); i’m at 266 now, and i gained all this weight in 2021 and a little bit this year, believe it or not. i actually lost weight in quarantine, about 13 pounds: wasn’t eating much and things going on in my social life in the summer of quarantine contributed to the losses. tried getting it back over the winter, and more so when alex entered the picture. then my stepdad passed in april 2021 and all of a sudden, there was a lot more food in the house. i gained 25 pounds last summer, going from 221 to 246, followed by another five over the winter and then 15 spread out over the course of this year.

i don’t mind it: if anything, it feels good. healthy, even. my pants fit better (those old ones in the top pic fell down at every chance: they give me the biggest muffin top now 😅), everything is fuller and rounder, and i can eat a lot more—i feel stronger, too. i was always curious about the world beyond 220 pounds—from 2015 when i hit 200, to 2021 when my stepdad passed, i bounced around that range and i was curious about the 230s. now i’m actually looking at 270. 270 pounds, i should be gigantic (and my mom is planning on making gingerbread cookies and sugar cookies pretty soon here, too. gingerbread, with sugar, there’s also a few chocolate chip cookies and some oreos in the cupboard, and persimmon cookies atop the fridge. and she wants to make bread pudding at some point. and there’s apple pie in the fridge. and there’s chocolate on the coffee table before me. when i said “fuck diet culture”, i meant it.)

my bras are tighter now, too. i had difficulty keeping them on my shoulders in 2019/2020: they keep everything in place now, like they actually fit.

i felt emaciated back then, too. my stepdad, with all his problems, often snuck food when no one was looking, and objected to my mom and me treating ourselves. i couldn’t eat much—and you gotta eat. you gotta nourish yourself. he passed and suddenly, i could eat to my heart’s content, all the healthy food and all the sweet stuff. 

my body widened out, i now have a definite double under my chin, and i have a potbelly now, and it’s kinda sexy, tbh. i feel really healthy: everything is where it should be and i haven’t had a cold or anything since 2019, interestingly enough. i do have a little snoring problem, but that’s about it, though. i’m not in pain and i’m not “aching” for anything. i was thin before the world came crashing down, but i wasn’t having a good time, though. i love to eat. i love sweet, fattening food. i love vegan food. i love meat and pasta and cheese. i love so-called guilty pleasures. i love mexican food, indian food, chinese food, japanese food, vietnamese food, filipino food, french food, german food, italian food, what the baltic countries do this time of year and just gorge until new year’s… i want to “eat across” a city some day. i love to eat, and i love to eat a lot.

i wish i got chubby as a teenager, if i’m honest. my story would have been so much different (just imagine: a fat field hockey player rather than a gaunt anorexic one, i probably would’ve stuck it out much longer). and i wish i could tell 13-year-old me that it’s really not at all bad because your body actually needs to be fed and that your thoughts are lying to you and the whole world is lying to you, actually, and you can feel good by eating whatever the hell you want, and come with me in unpacking diet culture and all the bullshit that makes women (and men) destroy their bodies all for the sake of chasing ideals which are pointless anyway because to change is to live and be human.

i remember being 19 on a camping trip to the oregon coast over thanksgiving 2012 and the backstory is it was a potluck dinner, and i brought a grasshopper pie because i’m actually from 1960. and no one touched it (one of the boys brought a pecan pie and that was more welcomed) and there was no room in the miniature fridge in our yurt. so, i ate this whole pie aside from two pieces missing. solo. on top of two helpings of thanksgiving dinner. three quarters of this creamy mousse pie made with crème de la menthe, marshmallow, and a chocolate crust. and this was well before i got heavy, too, this was back when i still weighed around 150 pounds, and before i dropped down to 139, too. i often think about that pie, too, how it made my then-slim belly swell up and it felt so right, and if i can do it now. i think that was the moment of clarity for me, in hindsight: the moment i thought, “i don’t want to torment myself anymore.” a fleeting thought, but i do remember thinking it.

in fact, i actually have a pretty distinct memory of being five or six years old and wishing i could eat everything and become fat, like i muttered it to myself when no one was paying attention (i looked at my naked body when no one was looking and i wished to be fat when no one was looking, the belly kink makes a lot more sense now, doesn’t it? 😜). i have no clue what happened to it, but my aunt used to have this old black and white photograph of me wearing denim jeans and cowgirl boots, and i had no shirt on, and i was pushing my belly out as far as i could go.

i wasn’t healthy thin, either. got sick a lot and nevermind b.m.i., it’s ableist and eugenicist and serves no one. you want to go with waist to hip ratio (those measurements divided by each other; you want under 0.80 to be considered healthy. and guess what? mine at the moment is 0.74, which is perfect. yes, even with my belly, i still pull off the numbers).

so, i have literally genuinely felt this desire to be a heavyweight my whole life: 5 year old me wanted a fat belly, 13 year old me wanted to look good, and 19 year old me wanted to feel good. it’s part of my truth. it’s just one part of who i am, and i’m finally just comfortable enough to talk about it.

so, as i write this, yes, i don’t feel negative about it (if anything… you want the truth? i don’t feel fat enough. it’s not like i’m lazy or sedentary, anyway: i’m gonna eat a big slice of apple pie with ice cream and whipped cream right now and then all my mom’s cookies, and everyone obsessed with dieting—and covering up—can die mad about it).

another kind of interesting thing about gaining all this weight? i feel more tomboyish than ever. i’ll go through the fat-related tags on here sometimes and i’ll look at fat women, and they’re all very feminine. whatever rings true for you, absolutely (the one dress i have, i tried it on and from the side, i looked pregnant with my well-fed belly 🤷🏻‍♀️) but i think it’s interesting that there aren’t a lot of “sportier” girls such as myself. i want to keep wearing shirts and sexy camisoles and skinny jeans and flared jeans that accentuate my legs and my hips.

When people say it's okay to like something but you need to "be normal about" it it's because the person they are talking to is being wildly inappropriate.

Examples of where I always see this topic come up in:

Ex #1 *Beautiful trans woman uploads selfie*

How people who think they're being supportive of trans women on the internet respond:

"Oh my God trans women are so fucken sexy! I want that girl cock inside of me! Cis woman could never! How could anyone not want to fuck a trans woman?"

These are not compliments, they are creepy inappropriate responses to give to a stranger on the internet. It also encourages people to put their fetish for trans women on full blast. Is not the same thing as being a trans Ally even if the people making the sexual harassment comments are trans themselves.

Ex #2 a black woman is minding her own business going to work or class.

White coworkers and/or classmates:

"Yas Queen! I see you! You are so thiccc ( this also happens too skinny and far from thiccc black women)! Teach me how to twerk. I want you to step on me! Crush me with your thick thighs! I love black women! Way better than white women!"

These are not compliments! It is racial fetishization and it's not even subtle. Although this does happen a lot online, unfortunately the behavior is not limited to the internet, there are various articles, books, and video essays that talk about sexual harassment black women face in real life. I strongly recommend looking into them. Keep in mind finding someone who is Black physically attractive and then believing that black people are the only sexy people in the world are NOT the same thing.

Ex #3 * A Japanese American person is just existing*

Some random stranger who sees them:

"Do you speak english! Your English is so good when did you come to this country! OMG are you are from japan? I think Japanese people are so hot 😍 but only Japanese people, not filipino's or whatever else there is. Can you say me love you long time? I love anime! I grew up watching Dragon Balls and Sailor Moon on toonami! Want to hear me pronounce the five Japanese words I know! I can use chopsticks! I have a bunch of katanas in my room and I've already chosen my Japanese name for when I go to live in Japan for a year. You don't speak Japanese or know anything about Japanese culture because you're a 5th gen american? I'm more Japanese than you are lol! I want to have your babies. I want you to have my babies!"

This also goes into the same problem of racial fetishization that was mentioned above. There is also the problem with the model minority myth that I know white people are less familiar with. You can find various books written on the subjects I'm not even going to get into it. It is important to keep in mind that white people favor Japanese people more than any other Asian ethnicity and there is a historic racist reason for that. Obviously yes you're allowed to like anime, Japanese musicians, ramen, video games, and kimonos. The problem is being a fucken weebo in front of Japanese people in real life who do not share the same interest as you and you assume they do because they're japanese.

Ex #4 blatant Erasure of disabled people and their needs by people who claim to be Disability Advocates. Whether we're talking about physically disabled people or people with cognitive handicaps, everyone including other disabled people love to erase their existence or downplay them.

It's claiming that the term disabled is "ableist" and Society needs to refer to people with handicaps as being "differently abled" ( which honestly is a lot more insulting) or telling neurodivergent people that "there is nothing wrong with you. You are perfectly beautiful as you are" ableism is alive and well especially within disabled spaces. As I've mentioned countless times I no longer go into the neurodivergent tags on Tumblr because I cannot stand the ableism from other neurodivergent people in them.

People will Pat themselves on the back believing that they are an advocate for disability rights will at the same time trying to roll back disabled activism by decades. I see way too many people encourage others to throw their meds away without telling their family what they are doing because they damper personality and spirit. Never mind the fact that those are literal life-saving meds somebody needs to be on and that person A is not person B's doctor. Random High school students on social media who believes they know more than an actual qualified doctor with a PhD who has met the patient in person and has been working with them on a treatment plan. But sure the stranger on Tumblr knows more about everything. Take a look at all the people who are now in their twenties who blame social media and specific movements for keeping them depressed for years. Who talk about how they tried to commit suicide specifically because of this group that they thought would lift them up but ended up enabling them to become the worst version of themselves. The mantra "Stay angry" made them think that if they sought help for their disorder, they would be falling in line with the status quo.

I've seen it countless times on Tumblr where someone will talk about how they are a paranoid schizophrenic who decided to go off their meds without telling anyone because they don't want to be controlled by big pharma. Rather than people voicing their concern and try to encourage them to speak with their doctor about it, strangers on the internet applaud them and tell them they are doing great at taking charge of Their Own life. 5 months later that same person is depressed, homeless, and cannot figure out why. People tell them that it's all society's fault for letting them down, never mind the fact that they encourage them to go off their meds in the first place.

When people say to "be normal about something", they're not saying that you need to fall in line with all the other robots in society. They are saying that you need to check yourself and your behaviors when it comes to a specific subject.

You don't have to "be normal about" anything, you just gotta try to be kind about it

Tumaba

Today I woke up at 4am to attend my mom's 5am Sunday Zumba class. I was specifically instructed to wear black because they coordinate outfits.

My mom is already cringing at how short my shorts are and I know she has a secret plan to reinforce modesty back into my closet. While I dressed up, she preplanned wearing an inside shirt to a black dress with a built in skort for when we attend church after our workout.

We're walking down the street and I can smell poo. I wonder if it's sewage and my mom chimes in that it's the dog's poo. She says if I get it on my sneakers, she will let me sleep outside of the house. It's one of her many jokes.

We get to the covered basketball court and it's slowly filling up with very dedicated women in the area.

Everyone is taking selfies and pictures and I am giddy watching them so happy about the community and their bodies. My mom quickly introduces me as her daughter. I can see the mixed emotion in their eyes. Some of course called me tumaba but reverently. In the past, I would let those words destroy me. But in context to being here, I realized they never met a woman like me: fat, athletic, tall, and fully Filipino. Others tried to correct her for saying that by whispering, "Sexy, na."

I am proud of my growth for not being offended. But mostly I realized that all along, I was built this way to be more than the narratives pressed upon ourselves as a people.

I walked the street and into the church later in the morning with people looking at me puzzled. A little kid was in such awe that he wanted to hold my hand.

My cousin and his wife were wearing the shirts I brought them and it warmed my heart to see them love it. My Lola was fascinated by my small efforts to talk in bits of taglish today. She asked me what I ate for breakfast. Lola, taho, itlog, and mansanas.

We had lunch and then went grocery shopping. I looked at mom with her fierce generosity and knew that's who I am becoming. We enjoy redistributing our wealth if we have the means to do so. She's such a boss that while paying for the groceries at what felt like Costco, Seafood City, and Whole Foods had a baby, I could hear her mouth I wonder where those two (me and my Lola) are. We were sitting right in front of the register in a chair for senior citizens.

We didn't want to stay out too late so the rest of the family that works 6 days a week their business could get some rest. My mom and I spent the day eating a bit of our groceries and she was fascinated by my assembly of the salad. I told her I know that people look at me like I am fat, but I know who I am. I make and eat nutritious food, I workout daily, and I get enough sleep (siesta and full rem sleep).

My aunt earlier asked me in the day if I would lose weight as fast as my mom. I said I don't know because I truly don't know. She's on her journey and I am on mine.

Mine is turning the heads as a tumaba girl.

Shattering Stereotypes: Unveiling the Patriarchal Lens in Filipino Media

Foreword

After more than 300 years of colonization, Filipinos are left with a deeply-ingrained patriarchal culture that was perpetuated even more by print media. Although not all media representation is reality, these serve as a reflection of society. From the portrayal of women as homemakers and sexual objects, to the portrayal of the queer people as comics and entertainers, these two sectors suffer the most from stereotypes brought about by the patriarchal lens in print media. As a result, women are objectified and harassed in society, while queer people are being ridiculed for expressing themselves. Hence, it is imperative to be critical of how different sectors of society are being represented, less these sectors will suffer from harmful effects brought about by stereotypes. It is also necessary to critically examine our perceptions of these sectors and to advocate for more inclusive and authentic representations of Filipinos.

A Curious Case of Calendar Girls: The Sexualization of Women in Alcoholic Advertisements

A Filipino house would not be complete without one or more of these calendars from liquor companies depicting a slim, fit and fair-skinned woman dressed in swimwear or lingerie and making provocative poses. As a child, I never understood why women were the ones endorsing alcohol. It wasn't until later on that I understood that it's because the target market of alcohol are men. How is it seemingly no one bats an eye that women are portrayed as sexual figures in order for brands to appeal for the physical desires of the public?

In "Social Inequality and Media Representation” by Croteau and Hoynes, the authors said that the creation of media caters to a patriarchal view- portraying men as dominant and career-driven while portraying women as homemakers or sexual objects. In print media, photos of men are often close-ups of their faces, while photos of women are often shown with their full bodies, and in as little clothes as possible to leave room to the imagination. As a result, women in society are often disrespected and are sexualized in broad daylight. It's disgusting.

I don't think Filipino women are portrayed fairly in these types of print media. Not all women look like these calendar girls, and the lack of diversity and representation of body types subtly enforces a sexist agenda that women should look a certain way to pander to men's interests. But most importantly, I feel furious that these advertisements seem to invite women in society to also be sexualized by men. It reinforces the harmful notion that women are free to be objectified because it's okay in print media to do so.

However, a new era for Calendar Girls has come with Ria Atayde carrying the banner for curvier girls. When I first saw this calendar, I felt seen. As someone with a similar body type, I feel connected with this representation of a Filipino woman. While this body type may not be traditionally sexy or beautiful, this form of print media comes across as embracing that aspect of femininity and taking charge of it. Hence, with more representation of different kinds of women, print media may be able to rewire the patriarchal view of media into one that is more holistic and representative of women, rather than catering to the desires of men.

Philippine Drag Culture and The Queer Community

Drag serves as a way for people, queer or not, to challenge traditional gender norms and embrace their identity by expressing their creativity and artistic talents, a characteristic that is so undoubtably Filipino.

In fact, the Philippines is home to some of the most talented drag queens in the world- from seasoned artists like Paolo Ballesteros to up-and-coming stars like Marina Summers and Taylor Sheesh. In 2022, the internationally acclaimed "RuPaul's Drag Race", a reality competition television series between drag queens, entered mainstream Filipino media.

Marina Summer stuns in an exclusive photoshoot with MEGA DRAG PH, a Filipino media company publishing print magazines and e-magazines on fashion.

Despite being a largely conservative nation, the show was well-received among the masses, thus elevating what was once only enjoyed within the confines of the LGBTQ+ community, into the rest of the country. But could the acceptance of drag culture in the Philippines signal a broader acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community as well?

In "Social Inequality and Media Representation” by Croteau and Hoynes, the authors noted that the portrayal of the LGBTQ+ community in media has been problematic ever since the 1930s. The LGBTQ+ community were stereotypically depicted as promiscuous, flamboyant, and ridiculous to the extent of only providing comedic relief. Despite the significant improvement in the media's portrayal over the last century, to this day, people only tolerate, if not accept, queer representations in media as long as it is entertaining.

While I'm proud that more Filipinos are being recognized as pioneers of fashion and beauty in drag culture, I can't help but feel frustrated that the masses may not take them seriously and thus reduce them to caricatures rather than respect them as individuals.
