The ways Zeus is characterised in ancient sources is ~ fascinating ~ to me.
The overbearing patriarch of the Iliad who keeps his godly family in check with constant threats of abuse and domestic violence. The conciliatory diplomat of the Odyssey, acquiescent to the desires and honours of his fellow deities. The ideal king of the Theogony, commonly elected, virtuous alloter of good and evil. The frightened tyrant, the cruel tormentor of Prometheus Bound. The all-encompassing orphic entity, who swallowed down and brought forth and is the entirety of the cosmos. The enigmatic, ambivalent, and sometimes undignified figure who refuses to appear on stage. The embodiment of righteousness, of majesty, the ultimate good, the promoter and dispenser of justice, the adulterer, the rapist, the upholder of oaths who perjures himself in the name of "love".
Above all the mastermind, the constant plotter, whose plan and will [Διὸς βουλή] permeate greek literature from epic to philosophy, whether it be synonymous with fate or not.
This is why I generally dislike simplistic takes on him. Sure, almost any way you choose to characterise him will probably have a sourced basis, his multifaceted "identity" almost guarantees it. But the massive loss of complexity is so disappointing imo.
#zeus#evidently it's impossible to reconcile every facet#nor would I want to see a rapist who embodies goodness and virtue#but maybe something other than cartoonish villain or sex joke or literally Jesus Christ#still I can understand he can be a very difficult character to portray#there's as many dimensions to him as the are conceptions of power#greek mythology#greek myths#greek gods#tagamemnon#hellenic deities

Sexual relationships with your gods are valid
I saw a post not too long ago speaking on intimate relationships with your gods and also the idea of “god spouses.” And while it’s fine to have your own opinion and express that I felt like it dismissed the relationship one may have with a sexual deity or even one that’s not primarily thought of to be sexual!
There are so many gods that help others feel comfortable enough to live freely in their bodies, masturbate, be with their loved ones and more. Why dismiss or undermine that because you believe you can’t have a more intimate relationship with a deity?
Gods are what they need to be for you. A friend, lover, partner, sibling, parent, best friend, teacher, mentor, what have you. The gods can absolutely touch you. Is it rarer than one may think? I personally don’t think so. And yes this does get into some harder conversations about psychosis and being wary of those symptoms. But I believe people know what they feel.
And who really cares if your god didn’t actually make you come. You felt connected to them in that moment, you did that for them, in one way or another. That’s valid. Don’t let others tell you differently or dismiss your experiences.

Aphrodite wants you to worship your body and partake in pleasure, which is totally valid, Artemis would prefer not to see that! I had felt her discomfort with it and I no longer do so in front of her. Just like us people, not every god is comfortable with being exposed to lewd acts against their will! Please close or shield your Artemis altar if you worship or are devoted to her and wish to pleasure yourself, or simply do so in your bathroom instead! That is where I keep my Aphrodite altar by my mirror vanity anyways. I love both my gals, and want them to both feel comfortable! Be respectful of the gods you worship, and if you feel that they are uncomfortable with something you are doing, address it! It’s important to any healthy relationship, even divine ones! That’s all. Have a blessed day 💙🏛️

Dionysus Deity Guide
Content warning: Dionysus is linked heavily with sexuality and sexual themes will be prevalent throughout this post.
Who is Dionysus?
Also spelled “Dionysos”, he is the Greek god of wine, ecstasy, and theatre to name a few of his areas of expertise. He was later adopted by the Romans who referred to him as Bacchus. Dionysus was known as being “twice born” due to the story of his birth(s).
The story of Dionysus’ birth is a tragedy, beginning his life with his mother’s death. The story goes that Hera caught wind of Semele’s pregnancy with Zeus’ child and convinced her to ask Zeus to show her his true godly form in order to prove that he really was Zeus. This true form was too much for a mortal to handle and Semele was consumed by fire—or the heat Zeus’ lightning bolts. Not wanting his child to die with her, Zeus sewed Dionysus into his own thigh (thought to mean his testicles).

Dionysus Eleutherios ("the liberator")
Acratophorus, Ἀκρατοφόρος ("giver of unmixed wine"), at Phigaleia in Arcadia
Acroreites at Sicyon
Androgynos Ἀνδρόγυνος (androgynous, specifically in intercourse) referring to the god taking both an active male and a passive female role.
Bassareus, Βασσαρεύς a Thracian name for Dionysus, which derives from bassaris or "fox-skin", which item was worn by his cultists in their mysteries.
Braetes, Βραίτης ("related to beer") at Thrace
Cistophorus Κιστοφόρος ("basket-bearer, ivy-bearer"), Alludes To baskets being sacred to the god.
Dimetor Διμήτωρ ("twice-born") Refers to Dionysus's two births.
Dendrites Δενδρίτης ("he of the trees"), as a fertility god.
Enorches ("with balls"), with reference to his fertility, or "in the testicles" in reference to Zeus' sewing the baby Dionysus "into his thigh", understood to mean his testicles). Used in Samos and Lesbos.
Iacchus, Ἴακχος a possible epithet of Dionysus, associated with the Eleusinian Mysteries. In Eleusis, he is known as a son of Zeus and Demeter. The name "Iacchus" may come from the Ιακχος (Iakchos), a hymn sung in honor of Dionysus.
Lenaius, Ληναῖος ("god of the wine-press")
Phleus ("related to the bloοm of a plant").
Pseudanor Ψευδάνωρ (literally "false man", referring to his feminine qualities), in Macedonia.
Tauros, Ταῦρος ("a bull"), occurs as a surname of Dionysus.
(Wiki)
Notes
Dionysus may have been worshipped as early as c. 1500–1100 BC by Mycenaean Greeks.
After birth Dionysus was said to have been sent to be cared for by Nymphs at Mount Nysa, the identities of these Nymphs varies by source.
His wife, Ariadne, was abandoned by Theseus on the island of Naxos. In some myths she is slain and/or ascends to immortality to live with her husband on Mt. Olympus.
Once he was an adult, Dionysus traveled to the underworld to bring his mother back with him to Olympus where it’s said that Zeus then turned her into the goddess Thyone—Goddess of the Bacchic frenzy that his female followers experience.
Dionysus is regularly found with groups of satyrs and maenads.
Another name the Greeks had for Dionysus was Bacchus, this was the name the Romans would later adopt for the god. Bacchus means “the noisy or riotous god”, fitting for this buck-wild deity! (Said with affection, of course.)
Along with wine, ecstasy, and theatre, Dionysus was known as a god of vegetation, madness, and frenzy along with quite a few other specializations.
Once a group of pirates kidnapped Dionysus who planned to sell him as a slave (or other unsavory things, depending on the myth); he overran their boat with creeping vines and beasts, and caused the men to go insane, then turned them into dolphins as they jumped overboard.
Dionysus has been depicted in many ways over time but two prevalent depictions are either him as an androgynous youth or an old, bearded man.
Apparently Dionysus hates owls; rather he hates the “sight of an owl” (Theoi)
As Bacchus he was commonly depicted as having ram or bull horns.
Dionysus had many cults throughout the ancient world including not just Greece, but in Scythia, Eastern Europe, Libya, North Africa and Gaul, Southern France as well.

Thinking about Dean's motif of corruption. "The very touch of you corrupts". Heaven, and Dean himself, see this corruption as rot. Hellfire. Moral decay, and, inevitably, destruction.
However, "corruption" can have other meanings, especially when defined by spn's (or most modern versions of) Heaven. "The very touch of you corrupts" when Cas first touched Dean, something took root. Dean's love, his protectiveness, the rugged life he was more or less forced into, his stubborn insistence, against all odds and in all circumstances, to prioritize family, food, hearth, a safe place to sleep and a planet that won't fall apart on him. Those roots spread- but not in any evil sense.
Tree roots.
Strong and unrelenting and vibrantly green, fed on tears, soil, blood, ash and salt, and on red meat and love. Wriggling through the cracks in Cas' celestial being, curling around the divine light and leaving rich earth behind it. Is it corruption? Is it decay? Yes. But nothing, angel or demon or antichrist or anything else, that Dean touches can help but become a creature of Earth. Most humans don't notice, humans are already Earthly beings, and most monsters are as well. Angels though?
Heaven and Hell are two sides of the same coin. The opposite of both is Earth- Earth with no care given to an afterlife, kindness and love existing for its own sake, no hypotheticals. Dirt, rot, messiness, food, hunger, tiredness, laughter, love.
and that scares the SHIT out of Heaven
they've seen angels fall, either living as humans or truly Falling, their grace charred and covered by hellfire
they've never seen one turn into a physical being before. even an angel reborn as a human is still an angel. Cas isn't becoming human. He's still an angel, but-
if the other angels can see the roots piercing through his true form, churning through grace like a sapling in new soil
what other word would they have but "corruption"?
(obligatory SAM IS NOT EXCEMPT FROM THIS. HE'S ALSO WEIRD THIS WAY follow-up bc yall will just hate Sam for no reason istg)

Round 1, Hill Farm 4/7
Norweni: ...you want to leave an offering for that?
Eisu: It can't hurt anything to ask the spirits' favor. Tomorrow is the festival and the peak of spring--I thought doing it tonight might be a good time.
Elmet: I'm going to pretend I can't hear any of this.
Norweni: Never did Fial and Dinn much good, but do it if you want. Why are you telling me this?
Eisu: Would you come with me?
Norweni: Oh, don't tell me you're still afraid of caves after Drossburh.
Eisu: Just because I can find my way out of a dark cave doesn't mean I want to.
Norweni: Alright, I'll go with you.
Elmet: Still pretending I can't hear this.
It's been a while since Eisu has been up in the hills. The cave still gives him the heebie-jeebies.
Eisu: Where'd you go?
Norweni: Had to pee. Figured it was better to pee outside than in the gods' house.
Eisu: Well... now what?
Norweni: I can't make your offering for you, Eisu.
Eisu: ...do you think the spirits are pleased?
Norweni: It's hard to say.
Eisu: Maybe I should've made a priestess my best friend instead.
Norweni: For this, definitely!
Eisu: Uh--
Norweni: I wonder how far up the ore veins come...
Eisu: Norweni? Did you see that?
Norweni: What? What?
Eisu: A bright light around the shrine.
Norweni: Spirit light. I've seen it once before, but I'm not sure what it means... I don't know why any spirits wouldn't be pleased with you, though. But maybe it's time we head back toward home.
Eisu: I think you're right. That really startled me... thank you for coming with me, Wenna.
Norweni: Sure, sure. *pats* Okay, that's enough hugging for now.
#Eisu and ''Wenna'' are also pretending to not hear Elmet#I looked at my town population and quickly decided that some kind of same-sex pregnancy mod needed to go back in my game#so: a spirit/fairy/deity of your choice did it#I will now proceed to not explain this any further at all#except for mentioning that sometimes when a spirit/fairy/deity of your choice does something there are... unintended consequences#:)#TS2#eulalia: Veridia#sims: Eisu#sims: Xiang#sims: Norweni#sims: Elmet

Ight hypnosers, let’s talk about it
Cw for talk of wet dreams and sex, also brief mentions of sexual trauma. Fair warning. But I’ve touched in nightmares so I think we should talk about the other well known kind of dreams too.
Wet dreams, that sexual shit. We all know what that is, and if you don’t you’re probably too young to be on the internet. A lot of the time, these dreams are purely just hormone induced, typically during puberty or if you’re trans, when you go on hormones and go through SECOND puberty (as a trans masc on T, believe me that shit hits you HARD at like months 3-7). But when Hypnos gets involved in these dreams it’s a reminder he isn’t just a gentle comforting being like he’s mostly portrayed as, but has a very much adult oriented side. This is a god who had male and female lovers, many kids of his own and was mainly worshiped in Ancient Greece, a very much sex everywhere time period. Seriously the amount of porn (gay porn to be exact) on Ancient Greek pottery is wild. And Roman coins too, there’s a bunch of them found.
So yeah, he’s got his gentle side, his more gloomy gothic side (nightmares, being the twin of death etc) and his “here have the kinkiest dream of your life” side. And there’s plenty of reasons why he’d send you a sexual dream to begin with. Helping you realise your sexuality, getting you to take notice of your pent up hormones, helping you realise you’re indeed attracted to that person you dreamed about, or alternatively that your NOT into them if you wake up thinking ‘ew, why them?’
And as for sexual trauma, sometimes those nightmares are simply PTSD, your own subconscious reacting to trauma. And sometimes like I said with the nightmares, it’s Hypnos telling you that you NEED to work through that trauma, to help you realise just how badly it’s hurting you subconsciously.
You can absolutely go to him for advice or help with these kinds of dreams, it’s within his domain so he absolutely won’t judge. He’s a god, he’s more knowledgeable and powerful than any of us will ever be, no god truly cares how much or how little mortals desire and act upon sexual urges (you know, unless it’s non consentual, you’ll get your ass kicked for that. ALWAYS get consent guys, and ALWAYS support victims).
Sex is still a stigmatised thing, despite the fact it’s literally how babies are made and completely natural. Even more stigmatised is queer and kinky sex/fantasies. So that societal pressure drilled into us from the moment we gain conciseness can make it feel like we can’t talk about it to anyone, even deities. Or that only deities directly linked to sex (e.g. Aphrodite and Eros) are the only acceptable ones to talk to. Get that idea out of your head ok? Because any deity will be open to talking about it, helping you with it etc. again, they’re deities. They couldn’t care less what us humans are into as long as it’s safe and consensual.
In fact, there’s a bit out there to suggest Eros and Hypnos were worshipped alongside each other. What is the bed used for other than sleeping? Exactly, sex. The bed is seen as a scarred place not only because it’s where you’re safe from the woes of the waking world, but because you invite people into it to perform acts that involve love and trust.
And what about if you’ve had a sexual dream WITH a deity in it? That’s probably a whole can of worms to be opened, I’m sure the godspousing people will probably be more of an expert on that than I am. Of course, it could just be your own subconscious, maybe you’ve got a bit of a crush on that deity (which is perfectly fine btw, unless they’re specifically a virgin deity who is all about staying celibate, then I’d raise an eyebrow). Or who knows? Maybe they’re trying to get something across to you. THAT is definitely something you’d want to talk about with them.
TLDR: Hypnos doesn’t care you have wet dreams, using your bed for sexual stuff etc. he’s absolutely ok with you talking to him about it, coming to him for help etc. don’t let the stigma around sex stop you from turning to him or any other deity for advice and guidance on your sexuality.

my highly specific taste thing with divinity kink is that if they actually fuck it's just not hot anymore. the unequal, inherently kinda fucked up relationship between deity and devotee IS the sex part. the sex is when a goddess briefly touches your cheek and smiles at you. put your fucking dick away.
#with exceptions for the devotee going down on the deity. that works cuz it's about the service#and getting off while the deity watches thats good too#but like. anything penetrative just ruins the whole deal for me#the whole POINT is the unequal footing. that feels too much like being on the same level#the eroticism is entirely in the power dynamic and that fucks it up#this is why theres nothing on tumblr that works for me lol. if it's not already hot without any literal sex you're doing it wrong!!#divinity kink#tt.op

Brisingamen Retelling: Freyja7ds
⚠️🔞️ Warning: adult themes! 18+ only! 🔞️⚠️ Greetings, reader! In this post, I will share and analyze a retelling of the myth of Brisingamen. This retelling is made by the passionate Freyja 7DSGC (@freyja7ds) on tumblr. Freyja7ds is a big fan of the mobile game Seven Deadly Sins: Grand Cross, where Freyja is a playable fighter character (called a Hero). Appropiate to the wonderful goddess, Freyja in the game has a powerful feline companion and wears the Necklace of Brisingamen. Freyja7ds delivers a wonderful retelling of the myth, using models of Freyja from the game with captions and speech bubbles and text.
Part 1: https://www.tumblr.com/freyja7ds/729179055593766912/freyja-and-the-origin-of-brisingamen-using?source=share Part 2: https://www.tumblr.com/freyja7ds/729179891345571840/and-we-have-enough-gold-said-another-freyja Other Scenes: https://www.tumblr.com/freyja7ds/730444724169818112/freyja-accepts-the-dwarves-deal-to-obtain-the https://www.tumblr.com/freyja7ds/730807121628758016/freyjas-face-when-she-heard-the-dwarves https://www.tumblr.com/freyja7ds/730897607419985920/freyja-asks-how-the-brisingamen-necklace-looks-on
The retelling is straightfoward, Freyja finds the dwarves Alfrigg, Dvalin, Berling, and Grerr and sees the necklace they made. She is so overcome with longing for the beautiful necklace Brisingamen that she BEGS the dwarves to let her buy it. She even gets impatient after they rebuff her offers, no matter how much silver and gold she offers. The dwarves are horny little guys and the GORGEOUS and VOLUPTOUS Freyja just walked into their forge begging for something they made, so they offer her the necklace in exchange for four looong days and nights of having their way with her and stuffing her holes 🥵️. Worse she can is say is no and just leave, right? She says yes to the dwarves' shock and delight. The pictures and descriptions of Freyja's flustered mix of arousal and embarrassement are amazing and full of expression. We see very little of the dwarves themselves, but their dialogue is written as horny little bastards who are eager to absolutely RAVAGE the wonderful goddess (who is apparently about three times their height 👀️😳️). After the four nights of what must have been some very intense deep fucking, Freyja recieves her necklace and returns to her home in Asgard with her powerful and beautiful necklace around her neck. Beautiful jewelry for a beautiful goddess.
The emotional atmosphere is one of sexual tension, scandal, flustered embarrassment, and eroticism. For some people, a bit of shame and fear mixed in with arousal is fetishistically appealing. The dwarves are clearly eager to fuck the goddess HARD and ravish her body in all sorts of ways, this will not be a mere quick make-out session. She is both aroused at the prospect, and disgusted and fearful at being ravished so intensely. All of this combined with her desiring the necklace so badly. To be clear, her fear is of the sexual prospect. She is not being coerced, and can easily say no and leave if she wants to. Emojis are used to accentuate the tone and emotional atmosphere of the story.
One interpretation of the original myth is that Freyja lost her husband after aquiring her necklace because she cheated on him and he left in heartbreak. Freyja7ds goes with this intrepretation, mentioning it in one of their posts. I personally don't enjoy this interpretation, I prefer a polyamorous interpretation where Freyja's husband would be fine with her choosing to share her sexuality with others outside of their marriage. But myths are meant to be understood from a variety of perspectives and different ways. Dieties in mythology are not meant to be depicted as infallable or morally perfect either. So, obviously, no shame towards freyja7ds for choosing this interpretation.
Overall, a wonderful retelling! Freyja7ds did a great job. Please go read it!

The Widerness is referred to as "it", but it appears female, and I love that. Mother Earth as a completely ruthless primordial force? A female nature deity who can be a protector, but demands blood spilled in her name? Yes please.
Also, I do love the design. Makes me think of archaic paganism, Bronze age, maybe even Stone age, and a modern person trying to imagine the powers people worshipped back then. Very fitting for the show.
#yellowjackets#yellowjackets fandom#diary pages#the wilderness#the horns do make me think of less abstract deities like artemis or medeina also#who people in mythology fandom like to mollify and it annoys me#or... though I could see the wilderness as hermaphroditic also#the duality of nature and all#the show is more about hunger than sex but if you go the archaic nature-worshipping route you'll have both#because these religions are always about the cyclical nature of life and rebirth#hell that even gives dionysus to me#rebirth and the “devourer of raw meat” title#i mean he received human sacrifices the longest of all greek gods
