can you go into more detail about what exactly you're worried about when it comes to Dylan's storyline? i don't listen to the podcast so i don't know what they said about him but from what happened in this last episode i'm scared for his storyline too
Okay for context here is the relevant exchange in the podcast (ep 2x2), the more relevant bits italicized, thoughts after the read more:
adam scott: [outtie dylan] seems to be sort of grasping for an identity of sorts, trying to look for somewhere to put himself and something to latch onto dan erickson: yeah, his is such an interesting dual performance because sort of on the surface it's maybe one of the more different portrayals of an innie and an outtie. like there's a little bit more of a natural feel.. or at least more of a recognizable feel to how he's acting on the outtie side. but at the same time zack does such an amazing job.. like you feel the same insecurities but they're expressed very differently because in the innie world he sort of knows who he is and out here he doesn't have that and there's the sense of being a little bit lost. a lot of the scenes that make me sort of emotional are seeing outtie dylan and how, kind of, like you said, he doesn't have an identity really and he's looking for it and he doesn't realize that he has one at lumon and... in a way he has a more rewarding existence there on a certain level adam: yeah, his innie is very sure of who he is and the parameters of who he is and his place in the world. in fact, he's striving and reaching for more- he wants more life to grab onto. whereas his outtie seems to be sort of shrinking away from life and from these responsibilities and things. it's really interesting [etc]
For me they're equating job and identity in a way that makes me 😬
like okay dan is saying it so i guess he is looking for an identity as far as intent of writing goes, but the fact that he's equating those two things makes me wonder
it could ! become a very interesting plot line about the way needing to work to have money to have insurance to keep your head above water etc etc etc drains you and burns you out etc etc. like the implication in todays episode that his wife was kinda into innie dylan and that there might be some weird love triangle with that? insane (positive) ! like imagine gretchen falling for the man who is her husband but who is also a stranger, who has no idea about a second of their shared life together, who has in a practical sense never met their children, because he is free of the burdens of a typical life? he's never had to apply for a job, he's never had to be rejected from a job and face the shame of it, he's never had to worry about health insurance. it could be so twisted and interesting
now that he's starting to shift and think about how his work is supporting his family, maybe innie dylan will start to develop that burden? idk? could be interesting as well?
but none of that is all that much about identity? it's about material reality stuff? and so when they are talking about oh he's looking for an identity and don't mention anything about safety or security 😬😬😬
especially this episode outtie dylan is portrayed as that stereotype of a husband who works and then is an uninvolved parent- forgetting about making cookies for school, sitting reading a magazine. obviously this is not a w for the pitch of the perfect home/life balance (even when he is gainfully employed and can't take work home with him he's still unengaged) and i can see what they're saying about he doesn't have an identity but he does at work- but what can the conclusion of that be when they talk about his job hunt as a search for belonging? is he depressed or is he a father who doesn't really want to know his kids?
how innie dylan acts tells us he (literally) has it in him to be excited and engaged wrt his family. to me i'm suspicious as to if they're going to have a strong story as to why outtie dylan is Like That or if it's going to be outtie dylan can't hack it because you know what gives you purpose? your job
edit: also i do!! think that maybe professional actors and writers are not the most likely people to fully understand that job != identity so there is also that meta dynamic at play

listened to the first episode of the severance podcast with adam scott and ben stiller today and i can't stop thinking about this bit they were discussing from the original pilot script where Ms. Cobel invites Mark into her house, has him watch while she tortures her pet rat, and then reveals that the rat is severed and "flips a switch" so the rat starts cozying up to her and acting like a sweet affectionate pet. like. okay! they were really just gonna put it all on the table like that! you're the rat, mark!!!! you and helly and all your friends are the rats, mark!!!! mark!!!!!!!!!!

Dan Erickson: "I had been working on the script for a while. As I was writing the initial pilot I was, you know, literally working a series of office jobs. I had just gotten to LA and sort of found on Craigslist the first office job that I could find, which was at this door factory. Just a factory that makes and repairs and ships doors and gates throughout the greater Los Angeles area." [...] Adam Scott: "So then you're at the door factory, and is that where you first, like, put pen to paper and started thinking about Severance?" Dan Erickson: "Yeah, yeah. [...] I always hesitate a little bit to tell this story, because I don't want to throw anyone under the bus, because I was very grateful for that job and the people there were very nice and treated me very kindly. But it was the last thing in the world I wanted to be doing, and I think everybody there knew that. And so I was just walking into work one day, it was 9am, and I literally just had the thought, like, 'God, what if I could jump ahead and suddenly it would be 5:00 and I would have done the day's work but I wouldn't have to experience it, I could just cut out that eight hours.'"

Was inspired to draw this by an Ed Vebell piece! That will be under the cut. I saw it and immediately thought of those two with it in some way. Was originally going to be nicer with flowers, however the horrors seemed more fitting

"Yeah, we were sort of thinking about that [Helly trying to leave Lumon in episodes one and two] when we were doing it to try and keep them in sync as much as possible. And then the end of that little sequence is great, 'cause, like, the elevator door opens and Milchick gives her the white flowers, which are the white flowers that Helly is holding when you [Adam Scott as Mark] almost hit her with the car in episode one." – Ben Stiller, The Severance Podcast with Ben Stiller & Adam Scott (S1E2: Half Loop [with Zach Cherry])
