Cassidy wasn’t sure why he was so nervous about this. Maybe it was because he wasn’t entirely sure what kind of a reaction he would be getting out of Kip by doing this, but at the same time he knew this was something he needed to do.

He stopped by the office door, glancing at the little plastic bag in his hand. Was he crossing a boundary by doing this? Cassidy had gone up and beyond to make sure he got everything he needed and got the right things for this, going as far as reaching out to Penelope to make sure everything he picked up was good. If someone knew what Kip liked, it was going to be Penelope, who more than understood Cassidy’s request, helping him pick out everything he needed over Facetime while he was in the store.

Shaking his head, pushing the intruding thoughts to the side, Cassidy knocked on the door. There was a brief moment of silence, him asking himself if he got the wrong room, but soon enough a familiar voice called him in. Pushing the door open, Cassidy was met with a questioning look accompanied with a welcoming smile coming from Kip sitting by his computer. As Cassidy stepped inside, Kip turned back towards the computer screen, working on what Cassidy could see being some video editing.

“Are you busy? I can come back later.”

Kip looked at him over his shoulder, shaking his head. “No no, you’re good, I’m almost done. Did you need something?”

As Kip turned away again, Cassidy glanced down to the bag in his hand that he had been almost unconsciously holding behind him, effectively hiding it from Kip’s view so far. It wasn’t even anything bad or outrageous he wanted to propose to him, but there was something about just asking him about it that made Cassidy feel bad even thinking about it. Maybe it was because he was unsure how Kip was going to react to his suggestion that made him dread doing all this, having seen him react to things very negatively before when people brought up even indirectly something currently messed up in him and his appearance.

The silence lingered in the room for long enough to catch Kip’s attention, him leaning away from his screen and spinning around on his chair, fully facing Cassidy finally. His brows furrowed at him, spotting the bag in his hands, the plastic thick enough for him to not see through it to deduct what he was actually holding.

“What’s up?”

Cassidy looked up at him, walking up to Kip. The other man easily wrapped arms around his waist, pulling Cassidy down to his lap, pressing a little kiss on his cheek, hoping it would wipe away the clearly concerned face. To most, Cassidy would have still been unreadable, but Kip had seen him like this unfortunately too many times, knowing full well that there was something bothering him. Besides, he wouldn’t bother him in the middle of work just for nothing, so this really was something important that was bothering him.

“…Promise you won’t get mad at me.”

Kip looked at him confused, Cassidy refusing to make eye contact even from behind his sunglasses, just looking down at the bag he was still holding in his hand. Eventually Kip just chuckled a little. “I could never get mad at you, you know that.”

Cassidy wanted to argue against the statement and how obviously untrue it was, but he remained silent, staring at the bag he was holding. He was here now, sitting in Kip’s lap, one arm around his waist and the other gently placed on his thigh, his thumb gently petting it, knowing it was one of those very specific things that helped to calm him down when Cassidy was overthinking or overwhelmed or having other similar emotions.

There was no way for him to back out of this now.

With almost a defeated sigh, Cassidy lifted the bag up, lowering it on the computer desk. Kip’s eyes traveled from him to it, watching as Cassidy started to slowly pull things out of it, slowly piling them on the desk in front of the two of them.

Kip’s eyes narrowed a little as he looked at the bottles on the table before glancing back up at Cassidy, who still refused to look directly back at him.

“…Clementine. What are you planning?”

He should have known this was a bad idea. Cassidy didn’t reply back to him, just watched silently as Kip reached for one of the bottles on the table, picking it into his hand. He spun it around quietly, observing it, stopping to read the print on the front of it.

“I didn’t know you were interested in this kind of thing. I think you look great as a blond.”

Inhaling deeply, Cassidy shook his head, gently running a hand through Kip’s hair.

“No it’s… It’s for you.”

Kip looked up at him, watching Cassidy spin a coil of his hair around his finger, observing it instead of making eye contact with him. It didn’t take Kip long to take the hint, his hand carefully slapping Cassidy’s away, giving him a little glare.

“It’s not that bad, come on.”

“Your natural color is showing. And not in a cute way.”

Kip pouted at him, grabbing his phone from the desk as he flicked the camera on, checking his reflection. Cassidy knew Kip didn’t like to talk much about his appearance right now, having gone through the bad phase of not caring much for himself, and his hair was especially suffering from it. His roots were all over the place, the previous color fading in patches, leaving him looking like a rather hot mess, but without the hot part, if Cassidy was being honest. Kip hadn’t gotten the hair cut in a while either, which Cassidy didn’t mind even nearly as much, sure a trim would make him look a bit more kept and like himself, but it wasn’t a priority as of right now.

“…You really think it’s that bad?” Kip finally asked in a very quiet voice, turning the phone screen off. He put the phone away, running his free hand through his hair. He hadn’t really put that much thought into it, often times he didn’t leave the house or keep himself on camera or anything where other people could see him. Kip had gotten somewhat used to his own reflection by now, but most of the time he didn’t pay any attention to the hair, the rest of his demeanor took priority when he tried to look for signs in himself for better or worse, for the recovery or relapse.

“I mean it’s not bad bad,” Cassidy shrugged, getting a pout back from Kip. “I just think we could do something about it. It could improve your mood too.”

“Yeah because you telling me I look terrible is such a mood booster,” Kip chuckled dryly as he rolled his eyes, before turning back towards the dyes Cassidy had landed on the desk. At least he had been given a few options to choose from, from some fun colors to platinum blond. His hand reached for the purple dye, spinning it around in his hand for a moment.

Maybe it wasn’t a bad idea. Most of the time Kip didn’t see himself from the outside, so he didn’t really know how bad he actually looked and how unkempt his outside had actually become. Cassidy might have been pretty blunt about it, but Kip knew he wouldn’t lie to him though, and he didn’t mean anything but good with his intentions. Sighing, he finally handed the purple dye bottle towards Cassidy.

“This one. I want to try this one.”

Cassidy looked at him, for the first time actually trying to make eye contact to make sure if Kip was actually serious, but it was his turn to avoid the other man. Cassidy took the bottle from him, glancing it over quickly before looking back at Kip. He looked somewhat defeated, but there was a certain kind of bashfulness in him that comforted Cassidy with the knowledge that he really did mean it; he just had a hard time expressing it.

“Purple?”

Kip nodded, stealing a look towards Cassidy while he was observing the bottle in his hand, being caught almost off guard with the smile on the blond’s lips.

“I think you would look great in purple. Come on.”

Cassidy put up on his feet, grabbing Kip’s hand, pulling him up from the chair before leading him out of the office.
