There are SO MANY random occasions of hinting at sexual tension or Sesshomaru showing even a minor concern for Kagura over the course of the story. And it all comes together at the ending when Sesshomaru admits that he came when Kagura was dying to SEE HER, not because he was smelling Naraku. Even one of the anime openings (or endings? I don't remember) puts them together:
Tumblr media
As beautiful it is as a part of the tragedy of her character that she was able to experience the small happiness -- which was enough to make her smile at the time of her death -- of being viewed as her individual person (as in, free from Naraku, in a way) by not just someone else, but THE someone else, I wish she could have survived. I understand in writing this genre that Kagura "had" to die because she was a piece of Naraku, who had to be destroyed in order for the story to resolve itself. But, instead of Kagura's body collapsing the moment Sesshomaru pulled out the Tenseiga to save her, she could have held on a bit longer and have been revived -- however, she could have lost her demonic energy and have been revived as a human. As a human who might have additional weaknesses due to the situation of her body, Sesshomaru could have brought her to his mother's to stay safe until the end of the story. His mother, who has these death-related tricks up her sleeve from the Meido Stone, could have had a barrier put up around Kagura that would make her energy seem like it was already in the underworld. This wouldn't be for Kagura to go out and fight during the rest of the story, but for a protective measure so Naraku wouldn't be sensing her being alive and attacking the Sky Castle -- though Naraku honestly has much more to concern himself with than that. Honestly too, it annoys me that Kagura couldn't be saved but that Rin was able to cheat death twice and Kohaku was able to survive after he was shot by a bunch of arrows as a child and then had a Shikon Jewel shard in his back to sustain his life. They go through hurdles to save these characters, but Kagura got nothing even though she was on the path to being a redeemed villain. With my proposed ending for Kagura, she would have to "pay" for her own wrongdoings and her birth having been from Naraku by living the rest of her days -- no matter how long or short -- as a human. (Personally, I don't think Kagura should have to "pay" for anything, but some people watching this genre would think she should, so just to please a bit of everyone in the fandom, she'll get a "punishment".) But she will also be left an opportunity for retribution in peace and along with Sesshomaru can go through experiencing these newly-addressed feelings that neither of them had ever concerned themselves with before. It's kind of sweet when you think about it like that.
Tumblr media
This chapter just feels so much heartbreaking in its beauty.
Did you notice Takahashi's use of images and onomatopeias? The way we can hear that "BOMP" of Kagura's heart as she sees Sesshomaru? To think that the very first thing she's felt through that so much wanted heart of hers just after got it was pain, and pain alone, physically and emotionally, and yet now she finally is able to feel something good, like a tiny light within warming her.
Naraku once again meant to prove his point that the lives of the weakest are meaningless. At least this time he could not win.
I would write pages upon pages about this chapter alone, maybe some day.

BUDDY I HAVEN'T SEEN YOU IN A WHILE BUT SESSRIN ANTIS ARE ATTACKING ME FOR A POST I MADE!!!!!
Hi, it's been a long time. How are you xD?
Which post???
Wait a minute... O.o if it's SessRin, it's usually some sort of pedo allegations or something. Or you know .. the ol' ship war.. usually vs SessKagu or KohakuRin. No offense to them, all ships are valid and all fiction is just fiction after all.
Actually, I haven't been very invested in Inuyasha since 2010(?) when this blog was a InuKag, Inukik, and Narkik blog . but let me write a defend post for them since many attacks towards SessRin are from salty purists who cannot differentiate fiction from reality. And
I understand that reading comprehension has been very poor in the west, ppl keep bringing modern human moral standard to a story where the setting takes place in the feudal era or the fantasy era where many other races besides human exist soo...
Let the SessRin haters know that Sesshomaru is literally a dog demon so not only modern moral standards do not apply to him, it also does not exist because in feudal Japan, peasants usually marry as young as 16 y.o. (and Yashahime confirmed she marries him when she's an adult)
(don't get me talking about father-daughter relationship, grooming accusations and power balance because none of them are true at all. Especially when Sesshomaru never fed Rin, he told her to look food for herself. Parental figure PROVIDE basic needs for their child. Sesshomaru did not. They are just travelling companions who happened to saved each other before.)
Roasting SessRin over pedo debate is also useless because by the same logic, almost all Inuyasha ships are minor x adult , including InuKag, Inukik, Narkik , SessKago and even SessKagura (Inuyasha is 15 yo mentally but physically he is 150 yo. Anyway, Inuyasha is also a demon, modern moral does not apply to them)
(Inuyasha's age is confirmed in Inuyasha the Movie 3 where he was born in 1347. Sengoku-jidai aka the Japan warring period is the 15th century, 1543-1553)
Yes you did not read that wrong. Kagura is YOUNGER than Rin, literally! Kagura was created as Naraku's second incarnation AFTER Naraku gained the shikon no tama shards, which was originally in Kagome's body. Naraku waited 50 years after Kikyo's death for this power. So, Kagura is a one year old baby
Unironically InuKag InuKik and SessKagu and the rest are still valid ships despite the pedo-element because this is a story about demons who live in fantasy feudal era. And the most important point is, this is just a cartoon , no actual child or human is involved lmao

hate that i want to reread inuyasha for the sesskagura moments tbh. also kind of want to read it for inukik moments, bc i never really got the impression that post-resurrection, kikyo wanted inuyasha back, she was mostly doing her own thing and trying to take down naraku on her own, and usually it was inuyasha seeking out kikyo when he heard she was in the area.
like yeah, kikyo kissed inuyasha and wanted to drag him to hell, but yk, she was angry, i can't entirely fault her for that tbh.

would really love to see the wild reasoning behind towa and setsuna being kagura's, a dead demon beyond resuscitation that had an unrequited crush on sesshomaru, or kikyo's, sesshomaru's also dead brother's ex-girlfriend, daughters

Sesshoumaru's secret admirer. Well, not so secret to us. Rin really appreciated her. I always thought it could make sense for her to be Sesshoumaru's demon wife and adult Rin to be Sesshoumaru's human wife like how Inu no Taishou had two wives in a fanon story. Even though she's dead and we know that she probably won't come back, that doesn't mean you can't ship them like anything else.

Alternate universe where Kagura didn’t die, would she do this dance only for him once? Without all the bloodshed and carnage, would she be as sure of all her movements as she is otherwise?
What would he say to her after, after the performance was over?

me: while it can be nice to think of sesshoumaru and kagura as a tragic lost love (or at least the potential for love), and thrilling to impertinently entertain the notion of a secret tryst behind the scenes, the interplay between them doesn’t have to be interpreted romantically, nor is there even very much evidence it should be. while some viewers - and rin - assume kagura had romantic feelings for sesshoumaru, a more accurate observation is he came to represent her freedom as she misguidedly hero-worshipped him ever since her first appeal to his nature, which is of course callous and self-serving. in fact considering that nature makes the thought of sesshoumaru in a romantic entanglement difficult to realistically conceptualize, let alone convey. as explained in canon, the essential purpose of her death - however infuriating the fridging trope is - was to transform this very nature. it’s not clear what thoughts sesshoumaru may have had about kagura before her death. their last encounter before it is quite intriguing, for many reasons: for one, how much of a rise saving her from the river / her mere presence gets out of him. more notably, this may be the first and only time he ever advises her to NOT try to do anything on her own, when up until this point he constantly asserts she needs to earn her freedom by her own hand. this could possibly hint his heart was already changing, and he intended for her to wait as he dispatched naraku, despite burying his already obscure advisement under his sneer that she cannot use him as her tool for this. so in the aftermath, perhaps something mixed into his altruistic despair for her fate is even the tiniest degree of guilt (or merely responsibility, if guilt is too strong), for he alone had the power to deliver / save her - repeatedly chose not to - until he didn’t. in his own words, he acknowledges what transpired between them changed him and his worthiness of tenseiga by declaring it’s up to him whether she died in vain, which can seem to be a mere matchstick of valor added atop the pyre of his need for vengeance for naraku’s misdeeds, but subtly communicates sesshoumaru suddenly feels indebted to her and by extension all she’s provided him throughout their encounters, which means he now considers her worth not only sympathy but his respect, enough to adopt retribution for her sake along with his. this is all incredibly powerful whether interpreted through a romantic lens or not—perhaps moreso if left platonic, because i suppose you could even say if it had been romantic, his sorrow might’ve in fact been too selfish to trigger any change in tenseiga.

honestly, inuyasha frustrates the hell out of me, bc there are so many goddamn appealing elements to it, but the way it's put together is just... done in the most generic, boring, cheap way, and then you become aware that it's been running on fumes for ages.
well, at least inukik, narkik, narsan, inusan, and to some extent, sesskagura and inukag (in the manga at least) exist
