The most recent image of the set should be posted within the last three years, and it must be a redraw of one of the artist's older works.

Roulette Romance Category for Term 3 2024 will be Best MirSan Romance. This will be a category for both Fanart and Fanfiction.

For Fanfiction, it will be defined as: Stories that have developed a believable romance between Miroku and Sango. "Believable" is subjective, and it is up to those nominating/voting to draw their own line on that quantifier and vote their "Best". This includes canon universe and AU/AR settings.

For Fanart, it will be defined as: Any romantic depiction of Miroku and Sango.

Due to low participation, we will be removing the Best SessKag Romance categories for both Fanfiction and Fanart moving forward. However, SessKag will be introduced into the Romance Roulette category for future terms. The original Best Romance categories will remain, so all non-InuKag pairings, including LGBTQ+, can be nominated into that category. All other pairings will be up for voting again next term.

Summary: On a moonlit summer night in Edo, 1639, a famous courtesan from the Yoshiwara pleasure quarters met a demon lord in a bizarre chance meeting moments before she took her own life by jumping off the Nihonbashi. In modern Tokyo, 2009, Higurashi Kagome and Takahashi Sesshoumaru were strolling along the Nihonbashi when their entwined fates from 370 years ago, once upon an Edo night, came back in a crease in time to revisit them.

feels like love - A botched marriage proposal, in fact, several failed marriage proposals, and a love that blooms in the chaos in between. It is more than she bargained for and a nuisance all at once.

After the first year, somehow word had spread of their work and soon many villages across the Japanese isles were sending for their services. It was tedious work but after each successful job, the villagers seemed to always be in better spirits than when the group first set foot in them. Kagome liked the feeling of doing some solid work and the feast that typically followed wasn’t the worst thing that happened either.

It was through these jobs that Kagome accidentally built a reputation.

Albeit it wasn’t such a terrible one, however, it brought upon a lot of unwanted attention. Some of it she was used to. For example, Koga hadn’t at all changed from when they had been jewel shard hunting.

In essence, Kagome was just being herself. Kind, helpful, and incredibly selfless.

It was also what attracted nearly every single person (and the occasional youkai) to ask for her hand in marriage.

Wanting is Never Enough 

Laughter, as brilliant as the sun and just as warm, echoed through the village. It was accompanied by a pair of eyes that were as rare in color as his own.

Sesshomaru had become familiar with this particular shade of blue. He had studied how the hue changed and understood what each variance meant. The details may have seemed trivial to some but to him, they were as critical as landing a fatal strike against an attacker.

Because they belonged to her.It had been exactly five years, two months, and three days since he met the miko. He knew the precise date because it was one of significance. That day was the first time Sesshomaru felt genuine surprise. He had been enamored with her ever since.

Despite months of attempting to convince himself otherwise, Sesshomaru’s feelings remained unchanged. He considered confronting the miko. Verbalizing his feelings felt foolish, especially given her close relationship with his brother, so he opted to stay silent.

After their defeat of Naraku, she disappeared. Inuyasha waited by the well for three weeks before he decided she was truly gone.

Her comrades mourned the loss. They held a memorial for her by decorating the old well with flowers and trinkets from their travels. Others came to pay their respects as well, including the wolf prince and his pack. Each had their own story to tell. Every time Sesshomaru heard them speak of her, his chest ached.

Once he departed from the village, he inspected his body for signs of poison or a curse— some reason for the pain he was experiencing. Nothing appeared.It was not until her return that he understood the depth of his feelings.

Seeing her for the first time in three years gave him greater joy than generating Bakusaiga. The sword was a part of him and yet he felt more connected to the miko. It was as if he had been reborn. His mind cleared. He could breathe without the weight in his chest. His movements were no longer sluggish.

Sesshomaru was forced to accept an undeniable truth. This woman was his other half. No other would ever satisfy him.

Unexpected

Summary: there is no formula for determining how a Hanyo will appear.

Tensions are high in our fandom right now, some have jumped ship, but some haven’t. If you’re still here and need a palate cleanser, here’s some sad but fluffy SessKag

Unexpected

The first had looked just like his brother: silver hair, puppy ears, Golden eyes, claws and fangs, a quintessential Inu-hanyo son.

The second and third had been twins, a boy who looked completely human and a girl who looked completely Youkai. If it weren’t for their mixed scent no one would know they were hanyo.

The fourth had been another mix of features. Silver hair, blue eyes, softly pointed ears, no fangs or claws; a beautiful little girl that Kagome called her elf-child.

The fifth had been a surprise.

His arrival had been diligently planned and anticipated; all their children were loved and doted on equally and adding another now the others were getting older was a choice that had taken no real thought.

He came into the world just as the others in a flurry of chaos and excitement, but the silence following his birth had been deafening.

The baby cried, but everyone in the room took one look and lost their own voices.

He had healthy lungs, that much was certain, two arms, and two legs....

It was the soft coating of fur that covered his body and undeniably doggish snout that seemed so out of place.

Kagome... he looked to her immediately. Tears streamed silently down her face as the midwife placed her new baby in her arms and she cooed over him. He could smell her fear and anxiety, stronger than the fatigue of childbirth and edged with deep sadness.

She closed her eyes and wept. He snapped out of his shock and went straight to her side, looking over his new pup to ensure he was healthy despite his appearance.

“I’m sorry. I’m sorry. Oh Kami-Sama I’m so sorry.”

She kissed the baby’s head and rocked from side to side with him, whispering apologies into his fur and weeping in anguish.

He was at a loss how to help her, so when the babe was asleep and she’d fitfully rested for at least a little while he endeavored to find out what he could from her.

“Why do you apologize to him?”

Weary from birth and such a turbulent storm of emotion, Kagome sighed and wilted into his side.

“I know you saw him. You held him, how could you not have? Hanyo have a hard enough time as it is, even when they look mostly human. What’s the world going to do to him, Sesshomaru? How is the world going to treat my baby?”

Her tears started anew.

He scooped her up and placed her in his lap where she sank into him, tears bleeding into the silk of his clothing.

“I don’t know if you ever met Jinenji. He’s a hanyo who didn’t turn out like Inuyasha. He’s huge and has an inhuman face. He’s gentle and good but the villagers he lives near tormented him. His mother was so old... I don’t know if she’s even alive anymore, and his father wasn’t there. I just... I’m so scared. Our other children have options, they can hide if they need to... but this one...”

He tightened his arms around her and rumbled low in his chest to soothe her wildly fluctuating aura.

“We will go and find this Jinenji when you are healed.”

Kagome grew still and her crying ceased.

“What?”

“We will ascertain his well-being and offer him a place here should he wish it.”

“Sesshomaru....”

“As for our son, he will have a mother who never dies and a father who will not leave his side. No matter what he faces in the world, or what cruelties he encounters, he will be safe with us. He will be safe with me.”

Her face crumpled in tired relief and she fell back into his embrace. No one would be fooled into thinking the problem was solved, they were only at the beginning of his little life and there was no true way to predict what challenges would be in store for him.

But, Sesshomaru thought as he pulled the little sleeping basket closer and observed his new son sleeping peacefully, oblivious to the angst his parents were trying to process, he already wouldn’t trade him for anything.

“Another strong son. Father would be proud. I am proud.”

He ran one fingertip through the soft, silvery fur covering his rounded cheek and smiled.

Winter - sesskag oneshot

Winter, Sesshomaru decided, was the least pleasing season of all. It was a season of serenity and quiet, in bold opposition to his underlying instincts to fight, roar, and claim. It was a season that chilled his pale skin, and no matter how much he chose to feign indifference in the presence of human or demon alike, even he could become bothered by the annoying nip in the air. More than anything, however, it was a season of stillness that stood directly in contrast to his perpetual desire to roam. A deep, concealed tuft of air that embodied distaste blew from his nostrils as his golden hues gazed out towards the garden that was tucked in the interior property of his home. Once filled with the vibrantly colored petals of every possible flower he imagined would please his mate, the garden was now a shadow of its former self, covered in a seemingly innocent blanket of glistening snow. Even with his demeanor, Sesshomaru had in recent years become appreciative of the beautiful sights and sweet smells that the season of spring had to offer.

A flicker of hope sparked to life inside his thoughts. Time will continue to drag on at its meager pace, the Taiyoukai began in his mind, but with each spring, the same flowers will bloom, and life will begin again and continue in an endless cycle, just as I will. Although, he paused, slowly blinking, perhaps I am simply being too melancholy. What was it she had mentioned about winter? Something about making one ill... “Cabin-Fever,” she called it? Sesshomaru, had he allowed himself to do so, nearly scoffed. The blood that coursed through his veins was pure and strong; to think that he could become ill due to simply the presence of a season was absolute ludicrous. With that ultimatum, Sesshomaru tucked his hands neatly into the sleeves of his night robes and allowed his eyes to follow the trail of a few more falling flakes of snow before turning to walk back to his room. His footsteps were light and nearly silent against the wooden floors as he walked, as he did not want to be bothered by an onslaught of greetings by his servants on this quiet morning. In the dim background of Sesshomaru’s mind, there was a certain feeling of something different in the atmosphere today; the light from the cloudy, snow-filled morning outside dimly illuminated his trail, and, scolding himself, was ashamed to admit that he had not noticed this until now. Finally, he made it to his destination. Furrowing his eyebrows in a rare display of emotion, Sesshomaru paused before entering his room, allowing himself the chance to listen to the soft breaths emitting from his mate. No longer cautious of this once foreign feeling, Sesshomaru accepted the gradual warmth that spread through his chest at the sight of Kagome laying across their bed sheets as he peered into their chambers.

Raven-colored hair tousled and spread out unevenly against her pillow, Sesshomaru felt a low rumble escape his throat as he gazed upon her, his eyes soaking in the sight of Kagome- indeed, his Kagome- resting so peacefully. Her plump, pink lips were parted in a way that made her look more endearing than usual, if that was possible. Porcelain skin, unmarred save for the few scars that lingered upon her body, seemed to gleam like a pearl in the early morning light. His mate was undoubtedly a beautiful creature, indeed.

Sesshomaru remembered a time when she had been as nervous as a fawn to even explore the home he had built for them, and begrudgingly he had to admit that when she had appeared after her three year absence, this is the last situation he thought their relations would ever be in. He had watched from afar, confused and frustrated with his own delicately jealous emotions as Kagome longed for the same emotional depth that she had formed with his half-breed brother before her leave. As time passed, however, the two companions discovered that their opportunity to grow as one had vanished, and Sesshomaru suddenly found himself picking any reason necessary to travel back to the small village where Rin resided just to be in the miko’s presence, much to his dismay. It was not merely Kagome’s physical beauty that had entranced him; her uncommon wit, loyalty to friends, and prowess in battle had admittedly impressed him. Kagome quickly became an enigma that Sesshomaru wanted to understand. He challenged himself, and promised that once he understood her that the ridiculous notions of caressing her skin with his claws and perking up at her flowery scent, one that reminded him of the springs from his youth, would cease once he could comprehend her.  

When she still lived in that village, his visits grew more frequent. Many nights were spent waiting in the solitude of the nearby forest for her light footsteps to grace his senses, and once she was in his sights, he would spend hours listening to her talk- mostly babble- about various topics that she felt like discussing. Back then, he had not been much of a conversationalist, and to a large degree he still was not, but these nocturnal escapades were a whimsical and innocent opportunity to quench his thirst for knowledge of her. Of course, as many policies in Sesshomaru’s life apparently went, these moments only made him more inclined to see her eyes brighten as she laughed or hear the warm inflection in her voice when she spoke of her fox-child, Shippo, and Rin. In one specific conversation that Sesshomaru paid particular attention to, one that even Kagome could visibly see the Taiyoukai concentrating on her words, for the first time in his existence he felt the sudden desire to claim another for his own when she spoke of living out the days alone and childless in a world she had chosen over her own family. A spark had ignited inside of him, and a heart that he unknowingly owned clenched; Sesshomaru felt the rush of wanting to so vigorously shield someone from the woes of life. Sesshomaru wanted to gaze upon a Kagome that was free from illness, worry, or fear, and a Kagome that was warm, smiling, and content. This realization had appalled Sesshomaru, but alike his stance with any challenge thrust towards him, he knew he would overcome this as well.

It was from this conversation also, and the subsequent moments between the two which followed, that slowly Sesshomaru understood what his father had felt for that “disgusting”- in his once ignorant opinion- Izayoi. Humans, although most were disdainful creatures, were not all intolerable. Some, such as Kagome, held a beauty that even goddesses of that human folklore would envy; even more, some, and in this case especially Kagome, had the ability to make powerful demons such as himself crave not only intimacy but emotional serenity. His father, the former Lord of the West, had fulfilled his duties and honors as the ruler of the lands, and Sesshomaru felt a small sliver of reverence towards his predecessor for doing what needed to be done.

Sesshomaru, too, had found someone to protect.

A soft voice, slightly husky from the hour, poked through his musings.

“Sesshomaru?” Kagome called out intimately, blinking open her eyes and attempting to rid them of sleep dust.

The elder slowly made his way over to their bed mat and lowered himself onto it. With the rustling of blankets, the miko stretched gingerly before rolling over to face her mate. With a deep, content exhale, Kagome closed her eyes once more after seeing his face. In a motion Sesshomaru had become increasingly comfortable with, a clawed hand was brought to cup the woman’s exposed rosy cheek. “I am here.”

“Good." Kagome replied, placing her hand over the one on her cheek. “The bed was beginning to get cold... You’re kind of my indoor heater, you know.”

“Hnn.” Sesshomaru concluded, delicately using his finger and his thumb to brush a lock of her hair out of her eyes.

Kagome opened her eyes and smiled up at him softly. At one time, her memory hissed at her, the demon in front of her that held her so gently had tried to kill her.

“It’s funny how things have changed…” She whispered, and watched as Sesshomaru amusingly cocked his head slightly to the side, but did not change his expression.

“I must admit I find it intriguing as well.”

Kagome looked sheepish for a moment before giggling under her breath. A sudden change in her scent, one that was prickling with nervousness, flooded Sesshomaru’s senses. Golden eyes narrowed in his own form of lighthearted suspicion.

“Things are only going to change more, too.” Kagome began, and before Sesshomaru could inquire about the sudden declaration, the hand that was once holding his mate’s cheek was slowly slid down to cup the top of her belly. An expression that- undoubtedly- was close to a mix of awe and confusion appeared on Sesshomaru’s features. “Considering that I’m carrying your child.”

A pregnant pause ensued, and for a moment Kagome regretted even telling him in this fashion before her worries were swept away as Sesshomaru brought her to him, pressing their lips together to begin a series of kisses that would only end when both were satisfied. Soon, the slow, languid kisses morphed into those of an excited appreciation that led to an even better morning than before.

Later on, the sight of flushed cheeks and the scent of content enveloped Sesshomaru from Kagome as they lay together, his clawed hand already protectively splayed against her stomach. Warmth was no longer absent in their embrace and in the air; the sight of skin shifting from pale to vibrant red had amused Sesshomaru so much that he decided to repeal an earlier declaration.

Winter was indeed a pleasing season after all.

For Fanfiction, it will be defined as: Stories that have developed a believable romance between Inu no Taisho and Izayoi (aka Inuyasha's parents). "Believable" is subjective, and it is up to those nominating/voting to draw their own line on that quantifier and vote their "Best". This includes canon universe and AU/AR settings.

For Fanart, it will be defined as: Any romantic depiction of Inu no Taisho and Izayoi (aka Inuyasha's parents).

This was so good! I loved her torrent of emotions, especially since they were that much more potent with her being tired. And her thinking she'd insulted him enough to make him run off without her. AND his little guilty pleasures about being around her (even if he doesn't know what they are yet). Great take on the prompt!

At last dawn broke over the horizon.

At last dawn broke over the horizon. The shadow things melted away by the light of day, and the black blood that had clung to Toukijin like tar curled away in strands of darkness like smoke that pulled apart on the wind. Just behind Sesshoumaru's shoulder Kagome slowly lowered her bow, almost swaying where she stood, then started to laugh.

This was not the reaction he would have expected.

For a moment it was alarming, and he almost worried that something was wrong with her - but her scent was unchanged, and as he turned to look at her she did not look unduly distressed, only tired. His concern melted into resignation as Kagome giggled helplessly, and a part of him wondered why he had not simply expected the unexpected. It wasn't as if she had ever reacted as she should.

"Is that funny to you?" Kagome asked inanely. "It's funny to me, I think. Or maybe that's the exhaustion talking."

Sesshoumaru spent a moment or two trying to unravel her words before he caught his own folly. He was still treating her as he would a creature who made sense. "We're leaving," he said finally, deciding that ignoring the question was the wisest decision in these circumstances.

The last few giggles died away, and when Sesshoumaru looked back over at Kagome he felt a slight guilty twinge over how drained she looked. Her hand came up to cover her eyes for just a moment, but couldn't hide that they were surrounded by deep bruise-like shadows, markedly worse already than a day or two ago.

"Sesshoumaru, where are we going?" she finally asked. "Is there somewhere we're going? I don't know if you need to sleep, but I'm human, I can't keep running all day and fighting all night."

He didn’t bother responding to her, though he needed sleep just as she did. He had no idea if it was less than an average human - Rin, certainly, had needed more than he did, but she was a child. All he knew was that he was beginning to feel it in his bones. His reflexes were dulling, as were his reaction times, and that was poor fortune when this endless fight had come to him. And Kagome had been in a worse place to begin with.

She'd been running from nightmares spun of living shadow for almost a week before she'd found him, only snatching a few hours of sleep here and there when the sun was high. She'd sought him out in desperation, after Myouga had mentioned some similar creature that his father had known and defeated in his youth, hoping that he might know what was happening. But he hadn't, and the only result had been to pull him into this. Sesshoumaru was a creature of honor, and Kagome had fought against and aided him too many times for him to simply leave her to her fate.

He sighed. "I am looking for my mother's house," he finally explained. It had seemed the best place to start, since the information needed pertained to his father.

"What do you mean, looking for?" she asked. "Don't you know where she lives?"

"In a way. But her home moves on the currents of the air, so locating it takes time."

"The house moves?" Kagome repeated stupidly. "What, like Baba Yaga?"

After a brief pause, Sesshoumaru decided not to ask what Baba Yaga was. Instead he jumped high above the trees and took a few moments to hold himself there, tiring as it was to fly. The wind whipped through his hair and silks and pulled them southward, which was as good a direction as any to hunt in. He held himself in the air and studied the horizon, looking southward, though his eyes were nowhere close to as powerful as his nose. Even so… there, perhaps? After a few moments more he was sure. With a direction and a goal he let himself drift back to the earth, ready to share the news.

Kagome was crying.

Sometime between him jumping and landing, the girl had crumpled to her knees and was hiding her face in her hands. Now, away from the wind and the fresh, clean air he could smell her tears, and her her chanting “Stupid, stupid, stupid” in a miserable whisper. It wasn’t really the reaction he’d expected, and he wasn’t sure what to do with it - in the ideal world, she’d just notice him, and pick herself up, and the two of them could be off. She did not.

Feeling a little uncertain, he cleared his throat. In response the girl shrieked and leapt to her feet in a way that was wholly graceless and then froze. She was staring at him.

“Miko,” Sesshoumaru began, and then stopped, realizing he had no idea what to say.

“I’m sorry!” Kagome blurted out. Sesshoumaru was almost grateful for the interruption, which neatly covered his little moment of thoughtlessness. “I’m sorry for saying that! I shouldn’t have, I’m stupid and loopy and saying dumb things, I’m sure it’s a lovely house, and, and I’m sure it’s not at all-” As she began to babble he sighed, feeling the gratitude begin to dissipate.

“Miko,” he said again, this time to interrupt her. She cut off her rambling mid sentence, and they stood in silence for a long moment.

“Thank you for coming back,” she finally whispered, and he raised an eyebrow at her. “I’m sorry. I’m so tired.”

“Hn,” he answered, making a decision. “Then I suppose until we arrive, I shall have to carry you.”

She lost her breath at the suggestion, and Sesshoumaru felt a note of pleased amusement ripple through him at the way she looked at him.

“You… what?”

“It can’t be helped in any case,” he answered as blandly as he could. “She lives in the sky.”

The miko took a faltering step closer, and he waited for her. “Thank you,” she finally said quietly, and scrubbed the remains of the tears out of her eyes, then stood on tiptoe and kissed him on the cheek. This very nearly made him freeze with surprise, but he didn’t allow himself to. Instead, after a moment he reached out his hand in invitation. She hesitated again.

“Piggyback is probably best, so that you can still use your arm if you need to,” she said awkwardly. “I, um, have some experience with getting carried around.”

For a moment he considered this, then sighed and turned away from her, taking a knee and sweeping the fall of hair off his back and over a shoulder. Kagome stepped close, only hesitating for a moment before she mounted, wrapping her arms around his shoulders and her legs around his waist. He allowed himself a brief, pleasurable moment of distraction as she shifted against his back. Privately he decided that this position had certain benefits, even if he felt like a pack animal. It was almost a pity when she found a way to wedge herself sufficiently in pelt and armor and swords to relax her legs.

“Sesshoumaru?” Kagome murmured, a forceful reminder of how close her lips were to his ear. “Thank you. Really.”

He hummed a noncommittal response as he stood and began to take them southward. Next to his ear he heard her breathing drop to become slow and steady with sleep.

There’s a cry coming from the mountains. No one hears it except Kagome so she decides to investigate. The only thing more surprising than who is making the sound is the reason why.
