On my itinerary through the North i have noticed people here are closer to each other in a sensual way. The closeness of the water, sauna and long winters, make people surprisingly easy with their bodies. These illustrations are my glimpses to people i met by the sea, by the lake or in sauna. It is about touch, intimacy and trust.

Future of the Past – Past of the Future: Creating Time in Public Space through Performance Solo exhibition by Isaac Chong Wai 6.4. – 28.4.2018 | Goethe-Gallery and Black Box Studio, Goethe-Institut Hongkong Isaac Chong Wai, a Berlin-based artist from Hong Kong, will present the result of his research in Germany at the exhibition “Future of the Past – Past of the Future: Creating Time in Public Space through Performance” from April 6 to 28 at the Goethe-Gallery and the Black Box Studio of the Goethe-Institut Hongkong. “What is the future in the past? And what is the past in the future?” – to addess these two questions, Isaac Chong Wai applies performance as the medium to deal with history and memory in public space. His research started from the history of Weimarplatz, which was formerly the Gauforum, built as one of the most important structures for the National Socialist Party in Weimar. In 1937, the foundation stone was laid for the “Hall of the People’s Community,” which was housed in the site, and the square was named “Adolf Hitler Square”. During the Allied Occupation of Germany, it was renamed “Karl-Marx Platz,” which was then kept under the reign of the German Democratic Republic. After the regime’s fall it remained nameless until 1999. Now, in its current incarnation as Weimarplatz, the absence of people has become the present view of the square, which has been blocked from public access. Looking at the past and the present of the Weimarplatz, one is led to address the function and dysfunction of its architectural structure: what kind of events, symbols and social activities could and can take place there? For this, an imaginary past is created through art in the hope of shaping possible fragments of utopia. The exhibition was first shown at the Bauhaus Museum in Weimar in January 2016, including works Painting a Moon on Viehauktionshalle (2014), I Dated a Guy in Buchenwald (2014), Neue Wache (The New Guard) (2015), One Sound of the Histories (2015). New Works to be shown in this exhibition include A Piece of Snow (2013), Flakturm and The White Flag(2016) ... etc. Isaac Chong Wai graduated from the Academy of Visual Arts at Hong Kong Baptist University with a BA in Visual Arts in 2012, and the Bauhaus-Universität in Weimar, Germany, with a MFA in Public Art and New Artistic Strategies in 2016. His recent solo exhibitions include “L'Homme et la Mer” at the Serlachius Residency organized by Serlachius Museums and Mänttä Art Festival in 2017 and "What is the future in the past? And what is the past in the future?" at the Bauhaus Museum in Weimar in 2016. His has recently participated group shows at the BERLIN MASTERS TOY Award at the Brandenburger Tor Stiftung in Berlin and “Forecast Forum” at Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin in 2017. His works were shown at the Maxim Gorki Theater in Berlin, the Kunstfest Weimar and Serbia’s Macura Museum in 2015, and selected for the 2014 Moscow Biennale for Young Art at Museum of Moscow. Isaac Chong Wai currently lives and works in Berlin and Hong Kong. Goethe-Gallery address and opening hours: 14/F Hong Kong Arts Centre | 2 Harbour Road, Wanchai

Found Object Terrariums Capture Nature in Jars
Severed into a dozen pieces, an imposing tree branch is magically encapsulated in glass jars, evoking ice-covered limbs. In her Urban Nature body of work, artist Naoko Ito tames nature by capturing wilderness inside of glass, like found object terrariums. The presentation is somewhat similar to Finnish photographer Christoffer Relander's jars filled with double exposed photos of the wilderness, except Ito creates room-scale installations of jars filled with nature. Visually, the work is more in line with German-Korean artist Andrei Koschmieder's installations of jars filled with fake weed—except, of course, Ito's captured objects are real items found in the wilderness, and presumably legal.
Ito, who originally studied visual communication design in Tokyo and worked as a graphic designer, moved to New York City in the late-00s for an MFA at the School of Visual Arts. There, she created a fine-tuned balance between her design approach and artistic investigations.
'Plight', 2011. Glass jar, tree, soil, wood, shelf, book, acrylic sheet. 65 x 100 x 70 in. Installation View, Urban Nature, CAM Raleigh, Raleigh, NC, 2011.
"I utilize glass jars for multiple reasons for installation works," Ito tells Creators. "The installation piece Silence (2009) is the first time I used glass jars. One of the subjects is expressing winter's landscape in New York, and I became interested in using glass, because its characteristics are similar to ice—transparency, fragility, and coldness."
In more recent works in the Urban Nature series, Ito has added words to the jars. In one, she places "Wind" on a jar, while inside is a leaf. "I employ glass jars to explore the idea of catching a moment," she says. "As [for] Wind, I did catch the leaf and wind."
Ito says she worked on the latest entry in the Urban Nature series while at a residency program in Finland last year. There, she researched Everyman's right, the country's public right that allows anyone to access public and private lands for recreation.
'Everyman's right', 2016. Glass jar, mushroom. 19.6 x 39.3 x 5.1 in. Installation View, Valoja, Serlachius Residency- Aleksanterin Iinna, Mänttä, Finland, 2016.
"Nature-related subjects are always interesting to me," says Ito. "And the relationship between moral values and social values is another one of my interests since I moved to the US."
While the nature motifs are ever-present, Ito has no set process for finding objects and selecting text, then combining these and other elements with frames, beams, pieces of wood, and other surfaces.
'Plight', 2011. Glass jar, tree, soil, wood, shelf, book, acrylic sheet. 65 x 100 x 70 in. Installation View, Urban Nature, CAM Raleigh, Raleigh, NC, 2011.
"It's hard to talk about the process, because each time there are different ways and it's still difficult to find a right way," she says. "But I am always looking for objects, words, stories, and images."
While the Finland additions to Urban Nature are extremely minimal, like the piece titled Everyman's right, which features a mushroom inside a jar, much of Ito's work is more structurally complex. The piece Ubiquitous, for instance, is tree branch cut up and placed inside jars; so that while it is in dozens of pieces it still looks like a whole branch.
Glass jar collection from 'Urban Nature' project, 2016. Glass jar, acorn, leaf.
But not all of the Urban Nature series is objects inside jars. Ito also regularly works with metal wire, bending and configuring it in ways that almost make it look like netting, cobwebs, or the leaves of willow trees. She is currently working on an installation made completely with wire, while also planning an upcoming installation.
Detail on 'Ubiquitous'
'Spelling Out', 2012-13. Wire, 55 x 117 x 128 in. Installation View, 'Bronx Calling: The Second AIM Biennial', Wave Hill, Bronx, New York, 2013.
'Wind', 2016. Glass jar, leaf, glass, wood, hinge. 43.3 x 47.2 x 33.4 in. Installation View, Valoja, Serlachius Residency-Aleksanterin Iinna, Mänttä, Finland.

👨‍🎨🌞🌸2 new works for Serlachius residency in Mänttä, Finland. @serlachiusresidency @serlachiusmuseums @ctgcollective . Kesäyö (Summer Night), 2019 laptop computer and easel 130 x 75 x 110 cm Summer night is the animation of manipulated images sourced from the Google search of the word Kesäyö. The artist has broken down these collected images to a minimal pixel count of 2 to 3 pixels per image. Inspired by his arrival and stay in Mänttä, Murakami reflects on the openness he finds here. Having grown up playing video games in the 1980s, Murakami remembers the space those simple games allowed for the child’s imagination. Today, the hyperrealist computer games leave little room for a player’s imagination to fill in the digital world. So too, an artist’s mind is constantly bombarded with information in cities like New York, where the artist lives, and Helsinki. . Maitohorsma (Fireweed), 2019 wood, glue, screw and acrylic 90 x 90 12 cm | 85 x 62 x 12 cm The flower sculptures accompanying Murakami’s Kesäyö (Summer Night) are pixelated versions of Finland’s famed fireweed flower. Inspired by its abundance in Mänttä, Murakami juxtaposes his digital work with the sculptures craved from wood, again reflecting on the gap between the 1980s and today, as well as the big city versus the countryside. . . . . #ShinjiMurakami #popartist #popart #pixelart #pixelartist #videogameart #8bitart #japaneseart #japaneseartist #brooklynartist #contemporaryart #contemporaryartist #emergingartists #sculpture #sculptures #artcollectors #artcurator #1908 #artresidency #artistresidency #artistinresidence #catincatabacarugallery #ctgcollective #serlachiusmuseot #serlachiusmuseum #serlachiusresidency #midnightsun #whitenight #maitohorsma #fireweed (at Serlachius residency) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1oFiEtH533/?igshid=1i0lyfoog9gq5
