Don't say anything about slick, that's all that Kayce needed to remind himself as he sat at the bar. Alek talked about it enough that it seemed to slip into his thoughts whenever he wound up in the same room as Serkan. Damn Alek. "So you were the alpha before Alek," it wasn't so much a question, given that Kayce had been there when the dynamic had shifted. You know, after he'd seen Alek rip the heart out of some poor bloke. "You thinking of getting the title back?"

“You look ridiculous,” words spoken the moment his gaze fell upon his oldest friend, as the choice of outfit was taken in. Of course, Burak’s words had held that hint of teasing that seemed to infiltrate almost every single one of their conversations. And despite the tense tone that seemed to flit through the Lupo pack after the decision that had needed to be made, he wasn’t going to allow that to alter whatever conversation he happened to have with Serkan. At least, not unless it had been absolutely necessary. “What’s with this?” He asked as his fingers took hold of the necklace Serkan had chosen to wear for a few moments, before he let it fall back against the other’s chest.

"You know, you're going to run out of glasses if you keep letting these fucks break 'em every night," it was an idle statement, given that River didn't exactly care whether the glassware came back to him intact or not. If Serkan wanted to spend every night ordering more, than that was on him; River wasn't going to play bodyguard to every glass he slid across the bar. But conversation needed to be made, especially when Serkan was not only his boss, but had once been alpha to the pack in town. Or part of it, at least. Maybe if River got him talking enough, he could eventually find out what he needed to know.

As it is Lucheni who tells [Elisabeth's] story, it also offers him an opportunity to escape from the rut in which he is trapped in the world in between - to break out and free himself from the torments of monotony through Elisabeth's story. At first this works very well and he clearly enjoys it, but the closer he gets to her decline and ultimately his murder of her, he realizes that he cannot escape this circumstance. Lucheni can no longer undo it and has to kill her. He is trapped in this cycle, forced to do something he no longer wants to do, but has to face up to it. For him, she is both a curse and a blessing. He actually despises her behavior, but because his murder of her has been gnawing at him for so long, he can no longer see her as he would have done when she was alive. He gets to know her situation at the point where he begins to tell her story.
