original thief series basso & garrett :)

ngl, it's about quality over quantity for me. an npc can have a total of three minutes of screen time, but if they have a cool name, they can live rent free in my head and I'll spend several hours trying to decipher drawable features from a blurry screenshot of pixels

there is a vague hint of a story here, and that's because every time I try to play thi4f, I get incredibly frustrated with how Not Fun the game play is. like, is the story good? well. but it has a PLAGUE. that should've given it instant 'I'll replay this once a year' status in my heart, but the game play sucks so bad that I've never finished it. I can't believe Not Fun gameplay beat out my obsession with narrative plagues.

anyway, the idea is basically if the original era had a game with a plague centric narrative and some other stuff I liked out of thi4f thrown into a narrative blender, with a heavy dash of horror thrown in because some parts of the thief games were scarier to me than entire dedicated horror genre games.

#if i had a laptop and the skillset i would attempt a story mod because the thief modders who create whole mission stories #are GENIUS and also somewhat terrifying. love them! xoxox #anyway im actually kind of obsessed with parts of thi4f but its also like. not at that sweet spot of almost good enough to be fun #to talk about. which. for the record. has not stopped me from talking about it at length to people #the city itself actually fucking fascinates me. its almost alive and im SO mad that not a single part of that game is actually terrifying #it should be gnarlier and instead it feels a bit like it doesn't quite want to be trapped in the story it has to tell?#but between the level that has the bodies on the meathooks #and the scene with the bodies hanging from the rafters or whatever that was and garrett living in a clock tower #because the game is very much ALMOST about changing times and authoritarian violence and capitalism #(like. by virtue of how the story sort of spins out i think it misses it's mark on a lot of stuff here #in the sense that i dont feel like it actually wants to tell that story. it wants to. go in a different direction. or at least walk on top #of those themes instead of through it)#ANYWAY between all of those things. it does kind of live in my head rent free. they did create a compelling setting #SHAME THEY DIDNT WANT TO ACTUALLY EAT ANY OF IT #unrelated but i would've given thi4f a 10/10 if they kept garrett's fucking nail polish from the concept art. cowards. unforgivable #thief the dark project #i still have no idea how to tag the game series as a whole RIP #sorry for the dedicated dark project fans. if you know what the general series tag is. please let me know #garrett thief #basso thief

okay sorryyyy long ramble about the dark beginnings teaser/sxs gens in general incoming. i feel like what we see in the teaser is . well "not real" probably isnt the right way to put it but i dont think its an actual direct flashback to shadows past. i think that shadow is trapped in his own memories. most obvious evidence for this is that the whole story of sonic generations is sonic revisiting his past adventures because of the time eater and eggman messing up the timeline so it makes sense that shadows story which is happening at the same time would be a similar situation. also theres these weird glitchy effects at certain points in the teaser which i think are meant to imply something isnt right here

also sidenote absolutely Haunting how maria grabbing his hand is what triggers it and we specifically see gun soldiers among the glitches. anyway. shadow also noticeably gasps/flinches when it happens which makes it seem like he saw it too

also based on all the promotional stuff we've seen so far black doom seems to be the main antagonist of shadows campaign. and its shown in shadows game that black doom has some level of access to shadows mind/memories and will use that to his advantage. like he literally made shadow watch the ark raid again and went "look what they did to you arent humans terrible". so this does feel like something hed be willing to do . or maybe its not Just black doom doing this maybe part of it is also caused by the time eater but the emphasis on black doom makes it seem like hes at least partially responsible

and speaking of black doom i dont think that he literally came back from the dead i think that the timeline being messed up just allowed him to show up again despite being dead. unless theyre gonna reveal that he survived somehow but idk him showing back up after all this time Specifically in a time travel related game makes me think he did die

idk how to end this post. shadow wasnt at sonics party because he was busy reliving his trauma for the millionth time

#also considering sxs gens is meant to act as an easily accessible recap of shadows lore #and we know that dark beginnings is gonna be a 3 episode series not just one single short #maybe each episodecould be focused on a different game/point in his life #like episode 1 could be about when he lived on the ark but the other 2 are about all of the games hes had a major role in #like sa2 06 heroes etc #sonic x shadow generations #sonic x shadow generations spoilers #also forgot to mention it but theres also literally levels in shadow the hedgehog that are set in shadows memories #so this sor tof thing isnt unheard of

I'm listening to the audiobooks of the His Dark Materials series again. I've read / listened to them many times but not for a few years.

Gods it's just hitting me again how awful what's happening to the kids in the first book. It's always awful, but I always forget how scary and visceral it is. You feel the fear and the finality and the tragedy of it. It's hard to even comprehend because we don't really have an equivalent in our world, right? Like maybe traumatizing a child so deeply they're never the same and then die. Die from sheer trauma to their spirit and body.

And it's just hitting me that they not only.... so deliberately ruin these children. They leave them out in the cold frozen woods to slowly die. They just. I can't even put it into words. They just ruin them and throw them away. They kill them and then kill them again.

Of all the characters in this vast series of names and places and tragedies and injustices - this little boy named Tony and his Ratter really weigh on my heart. Your alcoholic absent mother may not remember you in this fictional world, but in this real world I know I will.

So I've been thinking. It's funny how enjoying meta is somewhat embedded with trust.

Like, if you're "friends" and have followed a person for a long time, you have more a sense of their values, and it's easier to read their difficult meta because you trust more that they're being charitable/nuanced.

If you don't know them, it's harder to trust that they're not funneling difficult topics into rationalization of liking/supporting gross shit.

#meta thoughts #case in point - so much of the wincest community still comes off super classist to me and it sorts of...leaks into their meta #you'll be going alone with an interesting character study and then you read stuff that just BOOM classism about family ties #then you go to their page and you find that yes they're into that shit and there's typically a desert of thoughtful cas military angels etc #they tend to like benny cause benny is an idealized brother substitute / sam parallel and it's given the most uncharitable reading #just because you choose a partner than is familiar and like your fam members does not mean you're into your family members oh my god #and sure there's tons of visual and overt racism in SPN in general but to me that at least gets discussed #the classism inherent to narrative fangirl obsessions with incest? not as dissected #familism and community are seen as Weird (TM) to them and they kind of tell on themselves with that imho #and like with racism there are just some things you can't overlook to enjoy a series if you're black because that's your day to day life an #with classism it's hard too bc sometimes you can't escape the reminders of day to day life #and when ppl in the fandom see the villain's monologues as TRUTH you just wanna shake your head but know it's not worth arguing #communal living is more normal than america wants you to think...rich folks want it labelled *weird* bc they want you separated and drained #i am begging us to deconstruct suburbia instead of defaulting to TEEHEE incest bc shitting on pooled resources is paramount in a rigged gam #I find the inherent isolation of american living-to-work without any time to visit each other VERY isolating indeed...also...#like how did we get here #where we're so afraid of labels like*cults* and *helicopter parenting* and *enmeshment* than we isolate as a form of hallowed independence #american success culture has a dark side too #and separating low class families is the aim #get them to spend more $$$ and go for lofty ideals in pursuit of american dream instead of pooling their resources and meeting their needs #meanwhile rich folks do so much respectable nepotism and pretend they're *self-made*#to me that's what the symbol of zachariah is ALLLL about #and if you're blind to what his taunts ACTUALLY mean...i'm very suspicious of your worldview #if resource sharing and co-living becomes shameful and *incestuous* for lower classes then they won't pool their power at all #american exceptionalism #spn + class #class #class warfare #giving up college dreams to be a caretaker seems way more common in poor families too #i suspect we see the incest reading less from brown families / hispanic fams...cause familism is more common

It doesn’t matter how many times I read the series, every time I finish The Hunger Games series I sob uncontrollably. Everything about it is complete artistic and literary genius. And the fact that when I finish the movie series I get that same effect, leaving me sitting staring at my screen absolutely bawling just proves how incredible the series as a whole is.

#the hunger games #it’s 1 in the morning and I’m sobbing because I just finished mockingjay #the last lines of both the main story and the epilogue are just perfect #the symbolism and sheer beauty of Katniss and Peeta’s love story #the book of people they knew and loved and lost #the fact that Haymitch becomes a part of it and adds to the book #the whole series showing the obviousness of what war is and who it effects most #while also showing how peace and love and hope and family and friendship and connection and nature and LIFE are valuable #and precious and powerful #that though their trauma never goes away they have each other to help ease the nightmares and hold their hand through the pain #it is a series that doesn’t shy away from showing what oppression and war and trauma is and looks like #but that also refuses to say that that is all there is #it is a series that says yes there is darkness but there will also always be light #I’m tired and crying and rambling but I’ll just say #what I love so much about the hunger games is that it says life is hard but it is worth living #even if it’s found in the simplest of things #like the sound of birds the beauty of flowers the smell of fresh bread and the comforting arms of the person you love

#it occurred to me that i remember almost nothing of ID #i remember the ending really well because it pissed me off because leon's justification for what he was doing made no fucking sense #and i remember the blink and you'll miss it ashley cameo #and i remember that scene in that shitty apartment where leon hauls off and fucking murders a man #(well no he lived but for A GOOD CHUNK OF TIME the show leads you to believe he's dead)#because my heart rate kicked up and my breath caught in my throat #because that was the single hottest thing i've ever seen leon do in this entire fucking series #and it took me by surprise because like #ID came out during a time in which my focus was not on RE at all #and hadn't been for like #YEARS AND YEARS by that point #and now suddenly out of nowhere i'm sitting there fanning myself #and looking up at my monitor with my eyes wide and a scandalized little smile as my jaw hangs open #just all like #'mr. kennedy you behave yourself *i am a lady*'#but that's it that's all i remember about infinite darkness LMAO

sometimes i think about the absolutely batshit insane things that happened in warrior cats that have somehow managed to remain largely unknown by people outside the fanbase and i start to lose it

#ivy.txt #many people know about tigerstar losing nine lives all at once via disembowelment #but do you know that the evil cats from cat hell (which is a real place btw. called the dark forest)#orchestrated a revolution to get revenge and kill their enemies #by visiting young impressionable living cats in their dreams #and luring them in by calling them special and offering them training in advanced battle techniques and the like #and then poisoning them against their loved ones so that when the big battle came they wouldn’t hesitate to betray their friends and family #AND THEN. when this battle actually happened and the dead cats somehow fucking moved up to the mortal plane #the cats from cat heaven joined in too to help the living defeat the evil spirit cats #i swear this is a real thing that occurred in the books.#i’ve only read series 4 once but this is burned into my brain
