Febuwhump 2024 Masterlist

hey sweet peas, it's time to indulge in my favorite self masochistic pass time of reading horrid isekais and then explaining why they are bad to you.

anyways we have (read above). What's it about? let's present ourselves onto the steps of christ and ready some self flagellation devices~!

meet our wannabe hero Kurei yuugo, they are a god damn sentai nerd who dreams of being a boot licking fucking pig or a fire fighter in their never ending quest to be the hero they admire ever so dearly. he goes out and buys himself a brand new power ranger figure when some dude pops out with a knife and decides today is the day to snap. he tries to snap but with the dreams of every boot not yet licked kurai jumps to action, beating the shit out of this guy! only to realize he has been shanked with a one way express ticket to isekai land!

oh fuck, did i say his name was kurai? it's actually yuugo clay now and he wakes up about to get shanked again by some random blonde twink that is stealing his apparent girlfriend. That's right folks, your favorite kaman rider nerd reincarnated into an otome game right at the annulment event!

This world is a game luminous history, a dating game with a rpg magic system, how do we know this? Because Aryan wet dream with a sword that we saw sticking up yuugo is also not a native here, he popped into this world with a slightly better spawn spot as one of the game's romanceable targets. we also get to know that their are multiple chuckle fucks out there. anyways his plan is just to have a harem so please remember to have a foam hand out whenever something bad happens to him.

anyways that's not the meat and potatoes of this, we haven't even gotten to the god damn Gimmick of this series! Yuugos gets disinherited because Yuugo is a bitch prior to getting soul snatched and has to be homeless. his younger brother phil helps him out and gives him a apparent weak magic item, a bracelet that can transform into a full set of armor that looks suspiciously like a kaman rider suit, which is great because some random asshole decides to spawn kill the moment school starts, forcing him into a duel by... vaguely threatening his new lil brother, i'll be real, they aren't exactly clear what they are going to do to him but its props physical harm.

turns out the rider suit is pretty strong for him as he one shots random asshole, earning yuugo his first duel!

anyways, this makes blonde twink go fucking insane because now the script is off, but again asserts that its all gucchi and he is still going to have a bunch of girlfriends because in a world of endless magic the one constent is someone is looking to get their dick wet. fuck learning how to be a fucking wizard i guess, or looking for bad ass magic sword, Dick must have its moisture level elevated. Damn.

oh, also, yuugo is still homeless, that never stops being a thing. I'm going to stop regenerating the plot and actually start talking about its themes and such.

Again we are met with the idea that someone is taking over for someone. the implications of which are somewhat horrifying if we choose to dwell on it but we got school politics to deal with so we don't. The main character is mostly a blank slate uploaded with the bog standard lawful good personality of your average shounen protagonist.  A welcome change of pace even though it creates a somewhat boring lead whose main point of attraction is “they did/said something nice to me and now i'm going to be their super bestie fore-ever and root for them.”  which we see with the characters brother and the first introduced  female love interest melt. 

But we do see another plot theme erupt in the main antagonist within the story. That being engaging with the world in earnest vs attempting to interact with the world with prior knowledge in effort to enrich yourself through that knowledge. Yuugo does not care that he is in another world, he already died a hero's death so at this point he is just playing a new game plus. The antagonist on the other hand was a Hardcore gamer, the horror, who had memorized the routes throughout the game and was meticulously taking actions in order to take over as the protagonist and rich the “poly for me but not for thee” ending. 

To me this makes the thesis of the manga that you should really not be like the antagonist. I know, truly bold readings here at the bottom of the barral, I'll take my reward for it later. 

Ok ok but what makes it bad? It's because isekai is an inherent colonizer trope. You, the one from the enlightened land, come to some fantasy world, notably behind in technology and become its god. You are perfect at everything, you are able to emasculate the lands men and make the lands women soon with every wayward cape swish. Of course yuugo is still participating in it but to a lesser extent. They understand that this is a fantasy world but they are coming at it from someone who wants to earnestly learn about the world and participate within it as the native populace would. The antagonist has no interest in that and wants to exploit what they know of it as much as possible to reach their desired end point. 

I will admit that i'm reading a lot of this manga that may not be there. To be clear, the point of this manga is that a jock kaman rider fan beats up a bunch of shitty nerds while in cool armor. That's the if and and but of it all and there is not much that can change that. Though i do think it's interesting that even if by accident the author created a really interesting point about something inherent within the genre that they write in. 

Do you have to worry about copious sex stuff?

The main antagonist keeps yapping about wanting a harem and there are some lucky pervert moments with melt but that's about it. 

Is the author heavily invested in the use of troupes to aid the story?

Kinda

Is it worth reading?

Again, Kinda. If you like kaman rider stuff, this is like a dinner mint, fine but if you got it at a restaurant alone you would want to kill someone.

Title: The Silent Citadel

Setting: The adventure takes place in the shadowy and foreboding region of Duskmire Vale, a land plagued by strange disappearances and eerie silences. At the heart of this desolate landscape stands the Silent Citadel, an ancient fortress that was once the seat of a powerful mage but has long been abandoned—until now. Recently, villagers from the nearby towns have been vanishing, their last known destination being the Citadel.

Purpose: This adventure is designed to evoke the suspense and tension of a thriller, filled with unsettling mysteries, creeping dread, and a final confrontation with a malevolent force. The party’s goal is to investigate the source of the disappearances, uncover the dark secrets of the Citadel, and put an end to the terror haunting Duskmire Vale.

Adventure Type: Investigation and Horror, with elements of exploration, puzzle-solving, and a final confrontation with a supernatural villain.

Quest Hooks

Missing Persons: The party is approached by Elara Winterborn, a desperate woman whose sister is among those who have vanished near the Silent Citadel. She pleads with the party to find her sister and end the terror in Duskmire Vale.

The King’s Mandate: The party is summoned by Lord Reginald Greyhawk, the ruler of Duskmire Vale, who tasks them with investigating the Citadel and stopping the mysterious force that threatens his lands. He offers a substantial reward for the party’s success.

Houses stand empty, doors creaking in the wind, and the only signs of life are the crows that perch ominously on rooftops. The village is the last known location of several missing villagers.

Explorations: The party must search the village for clues, piecing together what happened to the villagers. They discover unsettling signs of a struggle, cryptic symbols etched into the walls, and a series of eerie messages written in blood that hint at the horrors within the Citadel.

Encounter: As the party investigates, they are attacked by Shadow Hounds, twisted creatures that lurk in the darkness, drawn to fear and despair. The party must fend off these beasts while trying to avoid the traps hidden throughout the village.

Loot: The party finds a Locket of the Lost (a trinket that allows communication with spirits once per day) and a torn page from an ancient tome that describes a ritual to ward off evil.

Location 2: The Misted Marsh

Description: The Misted Marsh is a treacherous swamp that surrounds the Silent Citadel, filled with thick fog, twisted trees, and foul-smelling waters. The marsh is said to be haunted by the spirits of those who tried to flee the Citadel and were consumed by the cursed mists.

Explorations: The party must navigate the marsh, avoiding deadly quicksand, poisonous plants, and spectral apparitions that seek to lure them deeper into the fog. Along the way, they may find the remains of previous adventurers, their bodies twisted in agony, clutching clues to the Citadel’s secrets.

Encounter: The marsh is home to Possessed Statues, stone guardians animated by dark magic. These statues attack anyone who comes too close, their cold stone hands striking with terrifying force. The party must find a way to destroy or bypass these guardians to continue their journey.

Loot: The party uncovers an Ethereal Lantern (a magical lantern that reveals hidden paths and dispels illusions) and a map carved into a stone slab, showing the layout of the Citadel’s interior.

Location 3: The Silent Citadel

Description: The Silent Citadel looms over Duskmire Vale, its blackened towers piercing the sky like jagged teeth. The walls are covered in thick ivy, and the air is heavy with the scent of decay. Inside, the halls are eerily silent, with only the occasional whisper of wind through cracked windows. The Citadel is a labyrinth of twisting corridors, secret chambers, and ancient traps designed to ensnare the unwary.

Explorations: The party must explore the Citadel, solving puzzles to unlock its deepest secrets. They find evidence of the dark rituals performed by the Veiled One, including a sacrificial altar stained with ancient blood. They also discover the remnants of those who tried to escape the Citadel’s horrors, their spirits now bound to the place.

Encounter: The final battle is against The Veiled One, a powerful undead sorceress who was once the Citadel’s ruler. She has become something more sinister, a being of pure malice who feeds on fear and despair. The Veiled One can manipulate shadows, summon wraiths, and drain the life from her enemies. The party must use all their skills and the knowledge they’ve gained to defeat her and break the curse on the Citadel.

Loot: Defeating the Veiled One rewards the party with the Veil of Shadows (a cloak that grants invisibility and resistance to necrotic damage) and the Orb of the Silent Citadel (a powerful artifact that can banish undead and protect against curses).

Rewards:

Material Rewards: Locket of the Lost, Ethereal Lantern, Veil of Shadows, Orb of the Silent Citadel.

Non-Material Rewards: The party gains the title of Saviors of Duskmire Vale, and their deeds become the stuff of legend. They also receive the gratitude of Lord Greyhawk and the people of Duskmire Vale, who may offer further assistance in future adventures.

Conclusion

Outcome: If the party successfully defeats the Veiled One and lifts the curse from the Citadel, Duskmire Vale is restored to peace, and the missing villagers are avenged. The Citadel’s dark influence is banished, and the region slowly begins to recover from its nightmare. If the party fails, the Veiled One’s power grows, and Duskmire Vale becomes a place of terror, shunned by all who value their lives.

Success Conditions: The party successfully defeats the Veiled One, lifts the curse from the Citadel, and restores peace to Duskmire Vale.

Failure Conditions: The party is defeated by the Veiled One, the curse on the Citadel remains, and the region falls into deeper darkness.

Maps: Provide a map of Duskmire Vale, including the Forsaken Village, the Misted Marsh, and the Silent Citadel, with detailed maps of each key location.

have you watch anime’s with controversial or bad endings? And see the so called fans defend it and praise it while you are left confused and angry for not getting it like then to the point you know longer enjoy the work anymore plus seeing people who did not enjoy it like you are get harassed or get into internet arguments with those that like the ending?

Oh wow this one is a great question, now I’m an old soul who has seen a lot of classic anime in the '90s, so this one is gonna need some good unpacking, coming into anime of the 2000s. yes fully aware we didn't get the same stories from the manga to the anime so here's my 4 series, I wont say these would be in the toxic category however maybe wrong.

Akame ka Kill, & Future diary

Anime I liked & watched but the ending was meh Soul eater, & Deadman wonderland

It was a good watch, it was one of those shows that had a great action-driven pace, with a great female main, alongside a strong cast of colorful characters, however, there were some moments in which it relied too much on fanservice. I don't get the hype of this one, why it really felt its the best thing ever however it still has a fanbase also, (which normalized in anime since going mainstream) Even not even fleshing out the supporting characters, there were times I felt the plot and writing of each character got over shun by the pacing of the show & action Yknow being killing offe such cha era cuter one by one.

Now this was a college watch at an anime club, I didn't really like this show cause it was kinda had so many elements, mashed into together,(Scifi & Harem tropes to an extent, not done right to the point of making Yuno a poster child of bad habits, I see Fans even ones defending or cosplaying yuno with a lewd personality justifying her actions in the show (which is understandable she was Abused, from my memory serves) Heck EVEN JOSH GRELE VOICE OF THE MAIN MALE said he didn't like it, And I Agree however I do congratulate the voice acting along akame ga kil, but come on the show was complete mind Fuck cause it left me in a doozy.

Now to the Anime I did Like But Rushed Horrid Endings

DeadMan Wonderland,

Very great underrated show created by the same person who did Eureka seven (also a great romantic mecha show I need to finish anime-wise) This had a captivating bloody good tie with your into action horror if its not to gorey, in today's mainstream titles. however the manga takes it to a ten while the anime didn't, (cause we had a gay badass transwoman fight alongside the main cast never shown in the anime, who had a great written background alongside others.) yes I felt the show got a bad end of the stick cause it had so much going for it, in the manga, now being Cut down to 25-30 episodes, with potential remake but the ending was a major cliffhanger. I don't see a issue or toxic writing in this one since it obscrued.

Soul Eater

Who could forget an after-school classic in my case, Its a Great series, this was one I watched, after homework alongside (Hell girl, Peach Girl & Aquarion)

I enjoyed the Anime to a high. I need a rewatch of soul eater, i did felt with time and writing progress they had the power to mash everything from the manga to the anime, understanding it takes a lot of work to draw, and pace a story like this anime with so much going for it, The voice acting served ( With Miss Cunty Medusa & Arcane Shouldve gotten more limelight to be more epic from the manga to the anime, Medusa Gave off Cyber Trakneena from Power Rangers)

AND LORD WHO CAN FORGET THE THEMES, yeah felt the show could've gone deeper or enlightened fans on the many ways the show coulda have been better but never experienced any toxicity from these Four, (glad we got Fire Force Though)

But yes felt the ending was a good one but I really wish certain characters even MAKA HAD the black BLOOD GOWN TO FINISH OFF ASHRA THOUGH.

So...............this is a series that exists!

Between the mainline series and The Return (which, I should note, isn't even officially released yet), Ranger Academy is already kind of the underdog of Boom's releases right now. And it's not really hard to see why; it's a completely original story set in some part of PR universe, not connected to any unfilled plot holes from the show or unexplained lore from the comics, cast with completely original characters not from any established planet we know. On top of that, it's more for younger readers than the older demographic the comics typically skew towards. If not for the giant PR lightning bolt they paste everywhere, it would be very easy to forget this has anything to do with Power Rangers.

But hey, apparently Zordon founded this school, so that makes it okay, right?

Now I've had my quibbles about this series and just the concept of a Power Rangers school in general; as of the third issue I think it's.....pretty good. But I figure we should give it a fair shot in discussing it (and there's no M/tt) so that means comic recaps!

Let's begin at the beginning with Ranger Academy #1!

= This will be the first of many examples of these Ranger Academy cadets (or just Rangers in general) being referred to as "knights", which I, a bit cynically I must admit, feel it's a way to avoid comparing them to cops. I feel it's not totally incorrect, though

= while this first issue is basically just the FCBD book with some additional pages, it's worth noting that Mathis's dialogue is slightly edited here.

= i'm not sure the significance of this yet, obviously, but I'm assuming "battling your inner morphin beast" has something to do with how cadets here get their Zords. The series has been taking its time it really laying down how its whole........system works, which is both good and bad, imo

= DILF ALERT! and he'll immediately correct himself if he gets your pronouns wrong. a real man

= I know I've already talked about how this made me hope that part of this book will be about pointing out the flaws in Ranger Academy's system rather than just framing Rhianth as a quitter buuuuuuuuuut future issues have already made some cracks in that. It's to be expected, I guess

= I know when this book first came out the Merrick namedrop caused a bit of a stir, but as of the third issue it hasn't really been elaborated on. I guess with the confirmation that Ranger alumni do guest lectures at this school, this is indeed meant to be Wild Force Merrick, but it's hard to say since a) he hasn't shown up officially and b) other show cameos follow the red/black/yellow/pink/blue color scheme. (Even Cruger does, as he's kind of confirmed to be a black ranger.) Mathis directly talking to him through coms about some random goat story also implies more of a close mentor/apprentice relationship rather than just a random guest lecturer?? But again, nothing like that has been shown, yet. I guess we'll have to see if it becomes relevant later or just an example of Early Installment Weirdness

= Tula you're giving him a bit too much credit there. Though admittedly Tula seems like the type to suck up to teachers by calling all of them the best

= though I agree that she needs to study up on Ranger history a bit more because nearly all the best Rangers got their powers by sneaking, lying, stealing, or all of the above. Rhianth's right that this Academy isn't making REAL Rangers!

What is Stellar Ranger Dark Star?

Stellar Ranger Dark Star is a series of Magical Girl novels I'm posting to Ao3! Three full length novels are already up there, and I'm working on Series 4. It stars June Hespia as the titular Stellar Ranger Dark Star, a teen born with a soul tied to Nemesis, the most powerful and destructive of stars, in a world where some people's guardian stars give magic. She's joined by a group of friends as she tries to keep the power she's been given out of the hands of her enemies--including the forces of an ancient evil.

Stellar Ranger Dark Star is a little dark at times! But not quite as dark as maybe some other magical girl series out there. Also it's very gay, so there's that. Some earlier parts are a little rough, but every once in a while I give the books a read-through and try to update it. If you check it out, I hope you enjoy it!

That, my dear readers, was an attempt at "localizing" Win Morisaki's "Ore Koso Only One" using the approximate translation of the TV length version of the theme put on the Ranger Wiki as a base. I spent a few days on it, and I understand it's hardly perfect (what with the creative liberties I took), but I felt it's only fitting that I go big for such a force of personality as Don Momotaro.

Episode 50, of Avataro Sentai Donbrothers. Can't believe it's finally ending. Our festival's about to as the clock strikes midnight on this town. I'm obviously gonna miss this series. But like... for how bittersweet this feels, I'm not sad at all. This is the best festival I've ever been to, and we've all made some truly unforgettable memories.

There ain't ever gonna be another series like Donbrothers, but I truly hope that it inspires some absolutely batshit insane stories to be told for years to come.

So, without further ado... Spoilers, I guess...

Over the past weekend, I stumbled across some old (2007ish) designs I had made for my own made-up team of Power Rangers.

Aaaaand since I've been mildly obsessed with Power Rangers recently (probably as a direct side-effect of binge-watching back through the original series recently), and also itching to get back to drawing more often... I ended up redesigning them a bit and drawing them again!

Their power source is a set of colored Orbs which let them connect with the souls of various ancient warriors to use their fighting styles and such, inspired by my old never-finished RPG Maker 2003 game Uggy Barfoo.

In the 2007 concepts each ranger only had access to a single "Soul" power, but I'm thinking it'd be more interesting if instead of a single set power each one has access to several (3 or maybe 4?) so they can switch back and forth between wildly different fighting styles and weapons depending on what they need at the time -- like the Uggy Barfoo class changing system (pretty much like the job system in Final Fantasy 3 or 5.) For example, a ranger could call upon "Soul of the Paladin" to switch into a heavily armored defensive mode with an oversized shield, or "Soul of the Berserker" to focus on charging in and attacking at full force with little regard for their own safety.

Missing from this page are the two "extras" I had planned in the 2007 concept, but they were never really considered part of the same team. One was kind of a weird loner who'd help from time to time, but usually not in a direct combat sort of role. The other was a bad guy, who would have been pretty much irredeemable as long as the source of her power was intact -- her orb contained the soul of a villain who sealed himself inside it to survive something that would have killed him, and the more she used it the more influence he'd have over her. Both had very different suits from the main team, so they would need a full body drawing to themselves rather than being just helmets added on like the blue/purple/orange/red ones here.

I haven't drawn their human forms just yet, mainly because I don't really want to reuse all the Uggy Barfoo characters like I did in the 2007 concepts. The Purple Ranger's human identity will most likely still be the same (since the Uggy Barfoo character is unlikely to reappear in any of my current games/stories/etc.), and I had already started changing the Green Ranger's human identity to be further removed from the Uggy Barfoo character even back in 2007. Ideas for Orange, Red, and Blue are in early stages at the moment. Not entirely sure what to do with Pink yet.

Born On December 14th, 1973

Thuỳ Trang was born in Saigon, South Vietnam, now Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, on December 14, 1973, to father Ky Trang and mother Be Trang. She had two brothers and one sister. Her father, a South Vietnamese army (ARVN) officer, was tasked with protecting Saigon from communist North Vietnamese army. After the fall of Saigon in 1975, he was forced to leave his family behind and fled the country, immigrating to the United States. Trang and her family lived in a detention camp as her father petitioned the U.S. government for political asylum for his family. They fled Saigon when Trang was two years old.

The role was originated by actress Audri Dubois in the pilot episode before Trang took over the part. After securing the role, Trang moved from Fountain Valley to Los Angeles to be closer to the set of the show, which she found to be a major adjustment. Trang described her character as having "quick hands and a peaceful soul", and felt the character was inspiring for viewers who have long desired an Asian superhero: "Asians are not portrayed in the media very well, and there are not many roles for Asian people except for the stereotypes – gangsters, hookers, things like that. A lot of older Asian people come up to me and say that I'm doing a service to the Asian community."

She was a Vietnamese-American actress. She was known for her role as Trini Kwan, the original Yellow Ranger on the original cast of the television series Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.
