It was supposed to be a normal patrol flight.

A scout had spotted something unusual on the horizon—a flicker of movement beyond the eastern cliffs, there one moment and gone the next. It could’ve been anything: a stray ship, a migrating sea beast, just a trick of the light. But Jeonghan, ever the proactive chief, wasn’t one to let things slide.

“We’ll check it out,” he’d said, already mounting Luma before you even had a chance to argue. “You’re coming with me.”

You hadn’t even finished tying your boots before he was tugging you onto Nox’s saddle. Not that you minded. You’d always been one step behind Jeonghan, a presence at his side whether in battle, at meetings, or on these spontaneous flights. You were his second-in-command first, his girlfriend second.

He made it hard to separate the two.

The sky stretched wide and endless above you, the late afternoon sun washing everything in golden hues. Below, the sea rippled in waves of molten silver, the wind carrying the scent of salt and damp earth from the cliffs. It was peaceful, for once.

“You know,” you called over the wind, tilting your head toward him, “for someone who preaches strategy, you’re really impulsive.”

Jeonghan smirked, adjusting his grip on Luma’s reins. “I call it efficient.”

“I call it reckless.”

“Reckless was when you set the training fields on fire last month.”

You rolled your eyes, nudging your dragon closer to his. “That was an accident.”

“You let Jun pour a barrel of oil over the targets and then thought it was a good idea to test fire arrows.”

“Again—an accident.”

Jeonghan chuckled, shaking his head. “Chief instincts tell me otherwise.”

“Chief instincts? You mean that little voice in your head that tells you you’re always right?”

He grinned. “Exactly.”

You scoffed, but the warmth in your chest was undeniable. These flights had always been your favorite moments—where it was just the two of you, the sky, and the dragons, no weight of responsibility pressing down. For a little while, it was easy to pretend that things were simple.

And then the storm rolled in.

The first gust of wind nearly knocked the air from your lungs. It came out of nowhere, swallowing the sky in an instant. One moment, there had been blue stretching far and wide, the sea below calm and endless. The next, the horizon was gone, smothered in thick clouds that curled like ink spills across the heavens.

Wind howled, lashing against you like a beast with untamed claws, and rain pelted down in sheets, drenching your furs in an instant. Your grip on the saddle tightened as Nox struggled against the storm’s fury, wings beating frantically to keep you aloft.

Jeonghan’s posture shifted immediately. His easy confidence snapped into something sharper, tenser. “We need to land—now.”

You gritted your teeth, Nox’s wings straining against the storm’s force. “We’re too close to turn back now!”

“You think we can keep flying in this?” His voice was sharp, but not panicked. Jeonghan never panicked. He just pushed forward, made decisions, expected you to follow.

You locked eyes with him through the downpour, the rain lashing against your skin like tiny knives. He wanted to play it safe. For once.

You didn’t.

“I can see a clearing ahead,” you called over the wind, pointing past the jagged cliffs. It wasn’t much—just a sliver of rocky terrain cutting through the fog—but it was enough. If you could make it past the worst of the storm, you wouldn’t have to land.

Jeonghan’s expression hardened. “That’s too far. We won’t make it.”

You shot him a grin, reckless and wild. “You underestimate me, Chief.”

Then, before he could stop you, you urged Nox forward—straight into the thick of the storm.

The wind screamed, nearly wrenching you sideways. Nox faltered for half a beat, wings catching an unpredictable current, before correcting himself. Every muscle in your body tensed as you fought against the storm’s wrath, fingers locked onto the saddle’s grip, breath coming in sharp bursts. Rain blurred your vision, the world reduced to a whirlwind of gray and black.

Then, suddenly, he was there, pulling up alongside you, his eyes blazing with something furious.

“Dammit—” He pulled up alongside you, his movements tighter, more controlled. His frustration burned through the storm’s cold, visible even through the sheets of rain. He was keeping pace, but barely. “You’re going to get yourself killed!”

“Not if we move fast!” You yelled back. “We can still—” 

You didn’t have time to finish the sentence before the sky cracked open. A violent gust of wind roared through the canyon, shoving against both your dragons with the force of a tidal wave. Your stomach lurched as you felt Nox’s balance slip.

No. No, no, no—

Nox let out a sharp cry, wings folding in slightly to regain control, but it was too late. The wind had already sent you plummeting.

“Damn it—” Jeonghan veered toward you, Luma’s wings cutting through the rain as he reached for you—too far, too fast—

Nox fought against gravity, twisting, wings snapping open at the last second. The impact hit like a hammer as you broke through the lower clouds, narrowly missing the rocky cliffs below. You gasped, heart hammering against your ribs. Your dragon righted himself, breathing hard, sides heaving.

Jeonghan was already pulling ahead, motioning frantically toward a cave nestled at the cliffside. No more time for reckless flights.

This time, you didn’t argue.

You landed hard, sliding off your dragon before your legs could properly catch you. Your knees nearly buckled, but you caught yourself, breath still coming too fast. Your dragon shook out her wings, letting out a low, exhausted huff.

You barely had time to process before Jeonghan was in front of you, shoving his soaked hood back, fury carved into every inch of him.

“What the hell was that?”

You yanked off your gloves and threw them to the ground, not even bothering to shake out your dripping sleeves. “You tell me! You’re the one who wanted to come out here in the first place!”

“I wasn’t the one who flew straight into the worst part of the storm!” He took a step closer, close enough that you could see the rain trailing down his face, sticking to his lashes. “Do you have any idea how easily that could’ve gone wrong?”

“It didn’t,” you shot back, voice sharp. “Because I knew what I was doing.”

He let out a laugh, short and humorless. “Really? Because from where I was flying, it looked a hell of a lot like you were falling.”

Your hands curled into fists at your sides. “You’re acting like I haven’t been flying my whole life, Jeonghan.”

“You nearly crashed—”

“You wanted to land, Jeonghan! If we’d done that, we would’ve been stranded out in the open—”

“We could’ve waited it out instead of nearly crashing into the sea!” His voice was sharp, raw with frustration. “You don’t think, you just act!”

Your jaw clenched. “You’re calling me reckless? This was your idea, remember? I didn’t drag us out here on some half-baked whim—you did.”

Jeonghan ran a hand through his soaked hair, shaking his head. “This isn’t about the patrol anymore.”

Something in your chest tightened. “Then what is this about?”

He exhaled sharply, like he wasn’t sure if he should say it. “You never listen.” His voice wasn’t loud this time. Just tired. “Every time I try to keep you safe, you fight me. Every. Single. Time.”

You let out a short, bitter laugh. “Oh, I’m sorry—did I ruin your perfect plan? Maybe I should’ve just sat back and let you make all the decisions like you always do.”

“That’s not what I—”

“Because that’s what this is about, isn’t it?” You stepped closer, voice cutting through the space between you. “It’s not about keeping me safe, it’s about control. You want me to follow orders, like everyone else does. Why? Because you’re the chief?”

Jeonghan stared at you, rain trailing down his cheekbones. His fists clenched at his sides. “Because it’s my job to keep you safe.”

The words landed between you like a drawn sword.

You exhaled sharply, shaking your head. “I’m not some helpless villager, Jeonghan. I’m your second-in-command. Or did you forget that?”

His jaw tensed, lips pressing into a thin line. “I didn’t forget.”

“Then stop acting like I don’t know what I’m doing.”

Silence thickened around you, the storm’s echoes distant now, muffled by the cave walls. The only sound between you was your heavy breathing, the lingering anger still crackling in the space where your argument had been.

Jeonghan stared at you, something unspoken thrumming behind his eyes. His fists clenched at his sides, chest still rising and falling too fast, too uneven.

“You really don’t get it, do you?” His voice was lower now, rougher, each word carved out of something raw. “I—”

Then he moved.

A sharp inhale was all you managed before his hands were on you, fingers curling into the damp fabric at your waist, pulling you forward with a force that left no room for hesitation. His lips crashed against yours, urgent, desperate, like he was trying to prove something neither of you could ever put into words.

You gasped against him, but your hands found him just as fiercely, gripping onto his tunic like it was the only thing keeping you tethered. His body was warm, feverish, despite the cold seeping into your bones. The kiss was messy—rain-slicked skin, clashing breath, the lingering taste of salt from the storm—but you drank it in like a woman starved.

Jeonghan broke away just enough to rest his forehead against yours, breath hot, unsteady. His hands still held you like he didn’t trust himself to let go.

“I can’t—” His voice was hoarse. “I can’t watch you risk yourself like that.”

Your fingers curled against the back of his neck, grounding him. “And I can’t watch you do it either.”

He let out something between a sigh and a laugh, shaking his head slightly before pressing another, softer kiss to your lips. Slower, this time.

No more words. Just the quiet hum of breath shared, the way his touch lingered even as the storm raged on outside.

Some snippets of a longer meeting I found fascinating. (I don't know if Yuyama has social media, but I hope he doesn't because because OOF. Like, it's okay that he has his own vision for the character and and everything, but said vision of that eternal adventurer was why I dropped the series as a kid. I just had burnout. 😅)

So, a bit of context from my personal experience with the old Ash anime, and sorry if it is a little rambly. I had originally started watching from early OS (the first episode I ever saw was when I was 6, and it was the one where Ash catches Bulbasaur), and stopped following it in mid-Hoenn (when I was maybe 11 or 12), which was when I caught onto the loop they had Ash in, that he'd never really reach a conclusion to his journey and it was really just meant to be an eternal adventure rather than something to make real progress in. (I would watch episodes if there were characters I liked, or if it just happened to be on, but I couldn't get invested in Ash anymore. I would watch for pretty much everybody else.) To me, it felt like you were just supposed to watch until you matured and were expected to leave, so that's pretty much what I did.

I tried coming back in Unova after playing BW, because I really loved the games and was excited to see Team Plasma in the anime, and it had a very promising start with the quicker pacing, but then came the earthquake and the cancelled two-parter, so I pretty much dropped the series again because there was no Plasma in sight until roughly two years later. I watched the league, but Cameron and the way Plasma (sans N) was handled pissed me off enough that I dropped the series entirely until TSME reeled me back in with Lysandre, and I joined Tumblr close to the time XYZ came out, so I just started watching the anime as a weekly thing from the Flare Arc on because it seemed like a fun thing to do for this blog. (I was also getting caught up on what I missed around this time.)

But even despite coming back and doing that, I still wasn't particularly invested in Ash, tho I was happy when he made big strides in his journey, like when he won the Alola League. I was here for the Aether family in SM, and all the returning characters in Journeys. When it came time that they were announcing their plans to retire Ash my literal reaction was YELLING, "We're finally FREE???"

It's pretty much one of the biggest reasons I gravitated to Horizons, besides being interested in the new cast. It seems to have a clear ending in mind with the way the plot is headed. Like, because the main mysteries are centered around Terapagos and the Explorers/Lucius, I really don't think we'll continue following them after everything's resolved. It might be risky changing casts, but that variety makes things way more interesting. (It's just more fun that way, having more characters to talk about, discussing favorites and least favorites with people.)

If there's one character who has shown significant development in both the series and the game #Pokémon Sun and Moon/Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, it's Lillie. In both universes, she shows traits of introversion, fear and insecurity, as well as kindness and readiness to help those in need.

In the games, she became popular with her close connection to Cosmog, a baby Legendary Pokémon that she rescued from the Aether Foundation when she discovered that it was being used in unethical experiments to open Ultra Wormholes. In the animated series, she was presented as a character with an intense childhood trauma of touching Pokémon but who, thanks to the help of Ash and her friends at Pokémon School, was able to overcome this phobia and continue to evolve as a Trainer.

There are depressingly few books out with genderfluid rep, and even then it’s often open to interpretation whether a character is genderfluid or not, but we’ve done our best to gather a modest list. Ashai is the younger brother to my old oc, Qara. They were close as children, but were separated as teenagers. Ashai has a gut feeling that his brother is alive somewhere, and will stop at nothing to find him again.

As a white mage, Ashai is well in tune with earth, air, and water aspected aether. During his travels, he will sometimes stop to lend aid if his healing talents are needed.

As young children, Ashai and Qara were taken into the Buduga tribe of the Azim Steppe. They have no memory of where they originally came from. Qara took quickly to the Buduga lifestyle, where Ashai struggled with their ways and found that he was better with magic. They were separated while traveling, an avalanche on the mountains was triggered, and Qara vanished in the wake of it.

Ashai was rescued - but not by the Buduga. He woke among the Arulaq, a tribe that had been missing for the last 200 years until recently. With them, he was finally allowed to train his magical abilities without being shunned or looked down upon.

Now a talented White Mage, Ashai bade an emotional goodbye to his friends in the Arulaq tribe in favor of traveling the world after having a series of visions, one of which containing who he recognized as his brother. Feeling that he couldn't ignore these visions, he knew he needed to find him, no matter what it takes.

The Great Unlearning, and the ruined Tri-Towers in the Ash

In the western center of Atma’Zae, the bent and skeletal remains of what was once a city of higher learning lies abandoned, broken and cursed under a hazy and poisoned sky. Those that dare to gaze upon the remnants of the Ash Crossroads speak of the sight of gloriously colorful and enigmatic ruins. Stabbing ever skyward, three decimated towers still arise from the embers of a capital city which was contaminated by volcanic powder and shook by a series of earthquakes not but four decades previously. These are the Towers of Magick, Industry, and Insight. Now resting in the desolate, nothingness of the Ash, the books of the Realm’s history are piled messily in fields of stacks below the Tri-Towers. It is rumored that so much as the delicate touch of one’s fingertips can turn these fields of books to hovering cinders, for their information is forbidden and forever better unlearned. Once known as Qraeto, this once-city is best left entirely evaded by travellers seeking to avoid the loss of their sanity, and their very lives.

The Tri-Towers once represented a delicate balance of illusion and devices, a place where the Ancient Gods first placed the Tomes of Foundation into a mound that became a great tower by men in the Enlightened Age. The southern and northern towers stood for the concentrated magic of the South, and the impressive and innovative industrial technology of the North. Written knowledge, and the application of this knowledge was vital to this city’s identity and was stored in the tallest and most ancient tower, the Tower of Insight. Only dedicated scholars, magickal bards, holy paladins and ethereal mages of the Realm were allowed access to study in the Tower of Insight. All through the Enlightened Age, cultures of the North and the South waged a cold and then hot war for control over the Realm. When this war reached its very peak, two twin-volcanoes thought to be inactive suddenly spewed molten lava and smoke. Mount Eden of the Northwest, and Mount Eve in the Southeast suddenly came to life once again, and covered the World in an ashen shroud that permanently concealed the Three Suns and the Moon.

The Ruins of Qraeto still sparkle, as the shattered stones and stained-glass ruins bend the light of the region’s aether into constantly changing neon hues that still make the city appear alive and active. Those that dare to amble through the Ash Crossroads have reported intense nightmares just before, during and months-after their journey through this region. To stay in this province for a mere fortnight is to go gradually mad, and then suffocate and perish beneath a visually stunning and toxic atmosphere. Over the millennia that defined the Age of Enlightenment, ten God-Kings and five God-Queens ruled the Realm, educated by great anthologies, technical manuscripts and magickal reference books of spells and incantations carefully stored and catalogued in the Tower of Insight. For when the Ancient Gods faded into irrelevance, and there were no longer any immortals to worship, humankind began to worship their own reflection. In that vanity and egocentricity, we were borne into current times, the Days of Ash.

After Viewing the Teaser Trailer for Space Jam: A New Legacy, I've been thinking about The Pokémon World Coronation Series (ポケモンワールドチャンピオンシップス Pokémon World Championships) You know the anime-exclusive tournament. Ash is competing in, What if there was something about it that Non of us realise about. We know that It is a competition held to determine the strongest Trainer in the world. But we don't know who is hosting it and how it started, I would say Chairmen Rose or Charles Goodshow, But non of them are involved, And I doubt the Champions of Each Region came up with it, So I'm suspecting it's been Secretly set up for the Legendary and Mythical Pokemon Amusement, Or something else..... What if it's part of the Dissidia Contest of Champions, Made by Extremely Powerful beings (The Grand Master, The Collector and The Beyonders from the Marvel Universe) Setting up the Pokemon World Coronation to see which Strongest Trainer will be useful to go up against Other Champions within the Anime Multi-Verse, Who ever Wins gets the ultimate Prize, and the Losers become possessions of The Collector. So... with things becoming unpredictable, and Pretty Cure All Stars Gen 1 being captured by the Witch of Delays because of a Botched Rescue mission in the Grand Ocean, Yana Ketchum and Professor Cerise and Professor Ivy have Decided to one up the Ultra-Guardian concept for the Ultimate Wars, giving Ash and Goh's Dynamax Bands a Extreme Upgrade with Tech from not just from the Ministry of Science, But also the Aether Foundation, the Upgrades where inspired from Professor Bellis's Sync Pair Research, so Mega-Evolutions and Z-Moves can be performed, As well as summon up a very useful Built in Pokedex for Details, Tactical knowledge and Weakness location for any Combat scenario, The Bands can also form Official Ketchum Alliance Uniforms, not just for the Main members of the Ketchum Alliance, But Also for The Boys, The Truth Seekers and The Ultra-Guardians, (United they are the Ultimate Ketchum Alliance), Who Designed these Costumes, Non other then Hermione (Former Teacher of Paris from Diamond and Pearl Episode 86) She heard of the Heroic efforts Ash and his Friends did at Sukoyaka City and with Dawn and Cynthia having Special Contacts with Paris, Hermione agreed to come up with Costumes that will Represent the Ketchum Alliance in Future up-coming Battles using the Rarest and unique Materials, She's keeping a Trade secret. Here are Ash Ketchum (Leader) Goh (Ash's Apprentice) Chloe (Goh's Childhood friend), Conner "FireRed" Ketchum (The Clone of Red and Ash's Adopted brother) and Kris (Twin Cousin of Marina from the Jotho Region) While Ash and Goh are gonna have much importance, Chloe is gonna have some Active Roles in the Events of 2021 mainly tell them about Tropical-Rouge! PreCure, and the Reason Kris is there is because I may have started a Relationship Between Conner and Kris, You could say there Costumes are kinsa similar to Super-Sentai stuff like Kamen Rider, but without the helmets, and don't worry, These Costumes are not gonna over-shadow the Pokemon-PreCure aspects such as Ash being Cure Master, these will be for the More Advance Pokemon Battles.

Pokémemories: The Nebby Arc

At the start of its second year, the Pokémon: Sun and Moon anime series did a compressed adaptation of the source material games' plot with the 12-episode Nebby arc. Ash and Lillie find and take care of a Cosmog they name Nebby, which ends up having ties to the Alola region's ancient lore and is targeted by both Team Rocket and the Aether Foundation.

This arc was really well-done, introducing many great characters (Lusamine, Faba, Wicke, and Professor Burnet), further progressing plot points from the show such as the Myth Arc involving Tapu Koko, Lillie's inability to touch Pokémon, and the wanderings of her aloof older brother Gladion and his Type: Null, and being full of emotionally charged moments and spectacular animation. It directly led into the much longer Poipole arc, which I'll cover later.

Pokemon Sun and Moon Series Episode Guide

In honor of the Sun and Moon series finishing 4 years ago, I have made a complete watch guide for the series. Have you never seen the show and want to? Trying to rewatch an episode but can’t remember the number? This guide has it all! This guide also has episodes noted as “filler” in case the episode count is a large commitment (I would recommend watching all the episodes but I get it). There is a notes section at the end where I detail some of the choices I made regarding the guide as well. If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Bold = “Plot” episodes. What I consider as “plot” episodes are new captures and evolutions for Ash’s team, story episodes, AND character focuses. Notes:

“Filler” and “plot” are noted as such because in my opinion there is no such thing as a filler episode in the Pokemon anime. The term is not applicable to something like the Pokemon anime as there is no true source material. I just use the term to describe episodes that you can skip as they aren’t referenced again.

I opted to be vague about the climaxes in the Nebby Arc, Poipole Arc, and the entirety of the League Arc because explaining anything gives a major spoiler.

I count a single arc as a narrative thread with a clear start and end that lasts for multiple episodes. In the cases of the 3 islands, the end of the arc is the Grand Trial. For what I call the Nebby and Poipole Arc, there is a clear first episode and last episode of the arc.

While the Ultra Guardian missions can come across as not “plot”, I consider them necessary watches because they are tied to the Poipole Arc and to a lesser extent worldbuilding. However any Ultra Guardian mission after the Poipole arc is completed aren’t considered as “plot” in my opinion

Any “filler” episode with the note “would recommend to watch”, are just fun episodes in my opinion. Notably, SM57 has some amazing animation work and SM114 has an amazing battle in it.

I keep writing snippets that don’t really fit in with any of the “main installments” of the Hallowed Cards series. I might add an entry called “The World” with no defined chapter count just to have as a playground for these kinds of things…

In the meantime, enjoy more Clive and Barnabas.

The two guards stationed outside Barnabas’s cell don’t stiffen when Clive comes down the stairs, but only because they are both already tensed. They do nod, though.

“He’s still just sitting there,” the nearer woman whose name he doesn’t know says. She most likely died in Kupka’s attack.

“Eats, sleeps, nothing else,” the farther man, Gaoler as Clive recalls, puts in. “Can’t tell if he’s sleeping when he’s like this, though.”

“Won’t say a word.”

Barnabas sits in the cell to the left of the one Clive had woken up in that miserable morning after killing Garuda.

During the first go of things, Clive had not made a habit of visiting the original Hideaway’s prison; his own misery hung over it like a shroud only he could perceive. Barnabas is unbothered by his confinement, sitting cross-legged with his arms dragged up and suspended by the chains fastened to the thick crystal manacles around his wrists.

By all appearances, he is meditating. Clive knows better: the man had moved, just fractionally, when Clive had stopped directly in front of his cell.

“He’s awake,” Clive says flatly. He pitches his voice to Barnabas: “Am I to prove myself?”

Barnabas chuckles, a sound that has the guards shifting on their feet and moving their hands near to their weapons.

He raises his head and leans back against the pillar that supports his chains. “No need. I can feel it.” His eyes rake over Clive, peeling back the skin to relish in whatever he sees beneath. “A god, in the flesh.”

The two guards exchange a look. Clive sighs; he doesn’t need any rumors spreading among the Cursebreakers, not when he doesn’t have the years of service at their sides to keep speculation both positive and to a minimum. Too late now, though. The former King of Ash has called him a god in front of them; there is no undoing that.

“You’re free to go,” Clive tells them. ”I can handle it from here.”

The woman’s brow furrows and it’s the man who speaks. “Are you sure?“

“I am. We…had an agreement.” His gaze lands back on Barnabas, who is still staring at him with unnerving intensity. “Didn’t we.”

Barnabas spreads his fingers for lack of being able to do so with his chained arms. “As you will it, Clive Rosfield.”

Never before has Clive heard his own name said with such reverence and he decides in that instant that he never wants to again. He tries to brush the feeling aside and addresses the guards.

“Please, you’ve both been standing here for hours, and he makes for poor company.”

The guards exchange one last look before they nod. The woman hands him the ring of keys—a good number of which unlock precisely nothing in the Hideaway and are just cover—and walks away with Gaoler, but not without one nervous glance over her shoulder. Clive suspects it’s more Cid’s orders to trust Clive than Clive’s own trustworthiness that has them listening to him.

He sighs again, expelling the melancholy of the time he’s lost, selects the proper key, and unlocks Barnabas’s cell.

“How does it feel?” asks Barnabas while Clive gets to work opening his manacles. “To have the divine aspects collected within you, their power made yours, your purpose fulfilled?”

Clive yanks the second manacle open with more force than necessary. “It has nothing to do with purpose.”

Barnabas rubs at his bruised wrists. In the Hideaway, buried deep in the blight, there is no ambient aether to heal his wounds. “Of course.”

His easy acquiescence leaves Clive feeling even more uncomfortable than if he’d argued. Barnabas stands and smooths out his shirt, looking practically none the worse for wear for his weeks-long stint in the cells.

“Despite your divinity, you still cling so desperately to this place and these people. Would that you release yourself from those chains of consciousness—“

“No. If you want to call me a god in your mind, fine. But don’t think I’ll be the same as Ultima.”

Barnabas blinks. Then the ghost of a smile crosses his lips. “My apologies.”

His agreement will never fail to send a shiver down Clive’s spine. This Barnabas has not turned nearly all his people akashic, but he would have done it unquestioningly not so long ago. Perhaps he would still do it if Clive asks…

Clive looks at him more closely. Barnabas stares back and narrows his eyes with the barest of questioning looks.

No, he wouldn’t. At least, Clive hopes not. He can’t let the ghost of the Barnabas he remembers blind him to the changes—however slight—in the one who exists now.

“You would have me walk unchained?” Barnabas surveys the cell before his gaze once more lands on Clive. “Your people won’t take kindly to that with your insistence on shielding their eyes to the truth.”

“I’m not going to order them to do anything. I’m not their leader and I’m not their god.”

“You’ve claimed divinity through choice and will. There is no other god for them.”

Them, Barnabas says. Not us.

“Even so.”

Barnabas crosses his arms. “Very well. Let them cling to their false god and exercise your gift of will for paltry comfort and empty hope.”

Clive resists the urge to pinch the bridge of his nose. If he isn’t careful, he’s fairly sure Barnabas will attempt to start some kind of cult in his name. “You won’t be restrained if you truly are an ally. But this talk of divinity, false gods, all of it—this isn’t the place. These people are here because this is their last safe haven. I won’t have you pollute it.”

Barnabas frowns at his use of the word pollute.

“Talk of Cid’s past and yours, as well,” Clive tacks on.

“You spare them fear and doubt for your own sake.”

“I want them to be able to sleep at night, and I want them to trust Cid because—regardless of what he did when he served you—he wants them to live with the dignity they’ve been denied everywhere else. It’s not your place to undermine that trust, understand?“

Barnabas steps out of the cell and takes a deep breath. He glances back at Clive with inscrutable waves rolling behind his eyes. “As you will it.”
