Manama Ch D F: Petros Tsitsipas/Sergio Martos Gornes [2] def. Vasil Kirkov/Patrik Niklas-Salminen [4] 3-6, 6-3, [10-8] Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP official website
V. Kirkov/P. Niklas-Salminen was able to extend some rallies to start the match, eventually pressing Pete/Martos Gornes’ service games until they got out-paced. However, the second seeds dug deep through their service games, ultimately shortened their point construction until it caught the second seeds' third shots. Somehow, while this created V. Kirkov/P. Niklas Salminen's 12 break points, including numerous deciding points along the way, Pete/Martos Gornes successfully maximized their chances by having a 50% break point conversion rate, as well as capitalizing on the second seeds' erratic start on the match tie-breaker to inject further pace to shift the moment in their favor.
For some reason, V. Kirkov/P. Niklas-Salminen had more solid service games. They won 79% of their first serve points, slightly having more edge than Pete/Martos Gornes by 8% despite the latter’s reliable serving in both the second set and the match tie-breaker, as well as how the second seeds scored 4 aces while Pete/Martos Gornes could not score an ace at all. However, bigger serves posed more risks for the second seeds as they double-faulted quintuple more times than V. Kirkov/P. Niklas-Salminen (7 to 2), thus fading their second serve winning percentage 12% lower than the fourth seeds.
This marked Pete's third Challenger doubles title, as well as Martos Gornes' fifth Challenger doubles title alongside their first title as a pair. Interestingly, for Martos Gornes, he will reunite with Marco Bortolotti in the upcoming Pau Challenger, where he will face fourth seeds Jonathan Eysseric/Albano Olivetti in the first round. On the other hand, Pete will join his older brother, Stefanos Tsitsipas, in Los Cabos (250) for their occasional brotherly doubles journey (with possibly Paris 2024 on sight).

The match tie-break then started with V. Kirkov’s double fault to give Pete/Martos Gornes the lead before the latter pair consolidated to 2-0. They had not looked back since, somehow doubling the mini-break lead thanks to their working volley (4-1). Although the fourth seeds hung on, they still could not match the pace Pete/Martos Gornes imposed as a result of their concise point constructions.
It was not until Pete/Martos Gornes having match points, where Pete’s failed volley saved one of their match points to 9-6 before a working smash from V. Kirkov/P. Niklas-Salminen on their serve saved another one, followed by an unreturned serve. A timely serve from Pete, which ended up being unreturned due to V. Kirkov’s backhand error, won them not only the match tie-breaker to 10-8, but also their first Challenger title as a pair.

The tables turned in the second set as Pete/Martos Gornes figured out their pace, as well as their service games. After speedrunning three consecutive holds, the second seeds paved their way on return to create their break points, only for V. Kirkov/P. Niklas-Salminen to force a deciding point, where Pete's swift backhand return caught V. Kirkov's volley off-guard to break 3-1. Despite having to survive another deciding point, their unreturned serve secured their consolidation to 4-1.
Somehow, the pace became faster thanks to their concise point construction starting their service games. Fast-forward to the ninth game, where they earned a chance to serve for the second set, they had to survive another deciding point, which also served as V. Kirkov/P. Niklas-Salminen's break point, where a successful serve secured their set to 6-3, thus bringing the match to the match tie-break as a result.

In Manama Challenger, the finals day started with the doubles sector, where fourth seeds Vasil Kirkov/Patrik Niklas-Salminen, who stunned first seeds Luke Johnson/Skander Mansouri 3-6, 6-1, [11-9] in the semifinals, met Petros Tsitsipas/Sergio Martos Gornes, who previously defeated Marco Bortolotti/Alessandro Giannessi 6-4, 6-1 in the same round. This match-up ended up giving in one way or another, but the pacing and their service games turned out to determine most of the flow.
Earlier surviving a break point several moments after V. Kirkov/P. Niklas-Salminen's working volley before holding to 2-1, Pete/Martos Gornes was asked the longer rally question, where their final shots were not it under pressure. This became evident in the fourth game, where Pete's volley, which was too long, right after V. Kirkov/P. Niklas-Salminen's return ace, resulted in the creation of the latter's break point, but an unreturned serve secured the hold for the second seeds to the said fourth game.
Afterward, a forehand let cord moment from V. Kirkov/P. Niklas-Salminen opened their way before Pete's failed smash after V. Kirkov's backhand in response to Martos Gornes' third shot created the said break point. They were saved, but it was insufficient as they ended up being broken to 4-2. The fourth seeds went on by consolidating to 5-2, but two games later, they started to face a challenge when serving for the first set, where Pete's forehand winner to the open court foiled one of their set points. Eventually, V. Kirkov/P. Niklas-Salminen took the first set 6-3 thanks to their unreturned serve, putting themselves one set ahead to the match.

After finally finishing their first-round doubles match yesterday (local time) convincingly against wild cards Justin Engel/Lasse Poertner 6-4, 6-2, Daniel Cukierman/Daniel Dutra da Silva set up a rare meeting that involved 3 people with the same first name, as they faced Daniel Rincon/Nikolas Sanchez Izquierdo, who stunned third seeds Ivan Liutarevich/Sergio Martos Gornes 7-6(2), 6-4 in a more thrilling encounter back in the first round. While the margin also appeared thin in this match, it came down to several shots that determined the rest of the flow.
It all started at the third game, where Rincon perfectly volleyed his way for a one-point lead before Daniel (Dutra da Silva)'s forehand errors (earlier and afterward), including a double fault, secured Rincon/N. Sanchez Izquierdo's break of serve to 2-1. The latter then consolidated to 3-1, and they had a working forehand winner somewhere to start the next game even if the Daniel double held their serves to 3-2.
The next game started with Daniel (Dutra da Silva)'s forehand return ace before they capitalized on Rincon/N. Sanchez Izquierdo's succeeding errors to break back 3-3, somehow strengthening their position with a service game hold (4-3) despite being 0-30 down due to a working fourth-shot volley from Rincon. They then broke back to 5-3 after Daniel (Dutra da Silva) passed N. Sanchez Izquierdo's volley side to set up their 2-point lead despite having 2 of their break points saved due to the latter's forehand error. The Daniel double then earned the opportunity to serve for the first set, which they did despite surviving a forehand return ace from N. Sanchez Izquierdo and Cukierman's +1 forehand error to take the first set 6-3.

Karlsruhe Ch D R1: Daniel Cukierman/Daniel Dutra da Silva def. Justin Engel/Lasse Poertner 6-4, 6-2 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP official website
J. Engel/Lasse had their moments earlier in the first set, but the Daniel double remained consistent as their combination of shot placement and anticipation started to bear fruit again right afterward, passing the former in some crucial points before breaking back, and nailing another decent opportunity to land another shot winner to break for the set. They maintained this rhythm in the second set, and somehow brought J. Engel/Lasse off-balance toward the end of the match. This way, the Daniel double earned 13 opportunities to break even though the wild cards converted 100% of the sole break point from earlier in the first set.
Besides, the Daniel double also appeared slightly more consistent on serve. Scoring 2 aces than J. Engel/Lasse's 1, they had an exceptional first serve winning percentage at 78%, 26% more than the latter, which helped them to get out of most troubles. On the other hand, the former pair's 2 double faults put their second serve slightly behind the German wild cards by 2%, with the latter winning 47% of their second serve points.
In the quarterfinals, Cukierman/D. Dutra da Silva will face Daniel Rincon/Nikolas Sanchez Izquierdo, who earlier stunned third seeds Ivan Liutarevich/Sergio Martos Gornes 7-6(2), 6-4 in the first round. This could be a rare match where three of the four players involved has a same first name (Daniel), but this could also be an exciting, dynamic match to follow, which could also depend on their point construction and execution as they maintained their range. Should be one of the matches to look forward to!

In the Orleans Challenger, the day kicked off with the doubles finals, where Constantin Frantzen/Hendrik Jebens took on John-Patrick Smith/Henry Patten, the latter who “doubles-divorced” Julian Cash after this year’s US Open (with whom they won a whopping 11 Challenger titles and having a lot of deep runs with, including several semifinals and runner-ups). Frantzen/Jebens advanced after Sander Arends/David Pel withdrew, notably defeating second seeds Pierre-Hugues Herbert/Nicolas Mahut 7-6(5), 6-4 in the quarterfinals. On the other hand, H. Patten/JP defeated Sergio Martos Gornes/Sem Verbeek 6-3, 7-5 in the semifinals. Knowing both pairs, this match had a likelihood to be a close encounter, and it did delivered itself.
In one of the deciding points in the middle of the set, H. Patten/JP held their service games and survived the scare of the previous break point made after JP’s failed volley. However, this first set ended up ending in a tie-breaker (hence the fast-forward to this section), where H. Patten’s failed volley created the differential for Frantzen/Jebens, who ended up holding their service game as well. The confirmation of the net game’s importance in the pressure points like these was made right when Frantzen/Jebens served for the match, where their working volleys not only secured the momentum earlier, but also converted the said set point to take the first set 7-6(5).

[Late Post] Zug Ch MD R1: Artem Sitak/Sem Verbeek def. Geoffrey Blancaneaux/Daniel Cukierman [WC] 2-6, 6-4, [11-9]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
📸 ATP Challenger Livestream (via website)
Overall, it was a neat match. From what I could think of, it all boiled down to which pair made fewer errors on returning and net game, which Sitak/Verbeek managed to, at the end. So this was how the stats evolved between the second set and the super tie-break.
Both pairs were equal in serving in a way. However, it was Sitak/Verbeek whose service games average were more reliable by the end of the match (60% 1st serve won and 64% 2nd serve won). The efficacy of their serves were backed up with the amounts of chances they made in returning, although it was Blancaneaux/Cukierman who had more break points converted (4/5, so at 80% in percentage).
However, one double fault (Cukierman omg) towards the end of the match cost Cukierman/Blancaneaux the game. Sitak/Verbeek served it out really perfectly, building a rally that forced Blancaneaux's ball to go wide.
Sitak/Verbeek will then face Marco Bortolotti/Sergio Martos Gornes in the Quarterfinals. Could also be neat!
