Bergamo Ch D QF: Sander Arends/Miguel Angel Reyes-Varela [4] def. Daniel Cukierman/Joshua Paris 6-7(3), 6-4, [10-5] Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP Challenger Livestream (via website)
The return games became the most important key that made S. Arends/Reyes-Varela stood out. Even though Cukierman/J. Paris anticipated well in most parts of the first set, S. Arends/Reyes-Varela managed to absorb the pace under pressure as this match went by, where their return aces become a start for them to control the flow from the baseline. This mostly worked in their favor starting the end of the second set, as well as their clutch serving throughout, where they carried the rhythm through the match tie-break thanks to the said pace absorption. As a result, Cukierman/J. Paris got out-paced through the match tie-breaker in the most crucial setup moments (via the volley side). Interestingly, the fourth seeds had a 25% break point conversion rate out of their 8 chances, slightly higher (by 5%) compared to Cukierman/J. Paris’ 20% out of their 5 chances to break, most of which came from the second set and left unconverted thanks to the said working serves.
Speaking of the working serves, it appeared that S. Arends/Reyes-Varela's service games looked more stable. Despite Cukierman/J. Paris scoring 3 aces, the fourth seeds still managed to win 5% more points from their first serves with 80% winning percentage. However, Cukierman/J. Paris became the pair who risked their second serves the most, double-faulting six times compared to S. Arends/Reyes-Varela's 4, hence their second serves winning rate faded to 52%, 4% lower than the latter pair as they tried to absorb the pace on the return.
In the semifinals, S. Arends/Reyes-Varela will face the first seeds Francisco Cabral/Henry Patten (dubbed as Catten 2.0), who earlier defeated home pair Giorgio Ricca/Stefano Travaglia 4-6, 6-3, [10-5] in the semifinals. Knowing both pairs, this could be a close and fun encounter with every element at stake, mainly return games and how they handle the rallies. It is highly recommended to tune in/follow this likely entertaining encounter!

📸 ATP Challenger Livestream (via website)
The match tie-breaker setup turned out to be the most important key to the rest of the flow, which mostly came from their return game again. In this case, S. Arends' final volley after a net exchange caused he and Reyes-Varela to lead early in the tie-breaker before they held their service game to 2-0. Since then, they had not looked back and kept dominating the flow from the baseline, even at the cost of Cukierman/J. Paris' unforced errors.
Even if the latter pair tried to turn the tide, it was not enough due to Reyes-Varela's forehand winner a point before the match point creation. Eventually, a successful serve+1 converted S. Arends/Reyes-Varela's match point, winning them the match tie-break 10-5 to secure their spot in the semifinals.

I made a name list!
Okay, so, apparently it’s a bit of a trend now to share name lists in this community. I have a name list of my own that’s been getting longer and longer. I’m deciding to share it, because I love going over other people’s lists myself and I have found many cool names that way!
My list is very long, like, very long, so you can find it under the cut. I also put it on a page on my blog here ( you can find a link on my homepage as well) and in a pdf file here. There, the names also have colours to indicate whether they’re male, female or unisex names. That page will probably be updated as I find more names I like. Anyway, enjoy?

📸 ATP Challenger Livestream (via website)
The second set turned out to be more competitive once S. Arends/Reyes-Varela stepped up from their service games. Even if they had to face several deciding points, some of which became Cukierman/J. Paris’ break points, but the former still managed to hold most of their service games thanks to their clutch unreturned serves at times. That way, they tried to absorb more pace on return, which started to pay off when Reyes-Varela’s swift forehand return created their break point before it was converted thanks to the similar first strike to Cukierman/J. Paris’ failed volley.
As a result, S. Arends/Reyes-Varela had the opportunity to serve for the second set. With a little hiccup on set point, S. Arends/Reyes-Varela successfully took the second set 6-4 thanks to an unreturned serve, ultimately bringing the match to the deciding match tie-break. This showed their well-executed pace absorption, as well as their early returns that paid their moments off.
