Explaining the names in Shantae: A New Genie

For those who have read my Shantae fic, you may be wondering where I got the names for certain characters from. I gave these characters names because they usually only had titles beforehand or no names at all, so I wanted something easy to go off.

Mia (NPC) - I don't really remember why I named her this. She just kinda looked like a Mia and I thought it was a cute name for a kid.

The Mayor (Scuttlebutt) - This is a bit of an inverse compared to the others. I made it so Scuttlebutt isn’t actually his name. Shantae simply thought it was, but it’s actually a nickname the mayor hates being called. And to be honest, Scuttlebutt is too ridiculous for a name, even by Shantae standards.

Jack / Johan / The Pirate Master - I'm not entirely sure where I got Jack from. It just kind of fit, and somebody thought I named him after Jack Sparrow from the Pirates of the Caribbean films. If I did, it must have been subconsciously. I used "Johan" as a fake name for Jack based on Johan Liebert from Naoki Urasawa's manga Monster.

Aaron (Harmony's father) - Not really sure where I got this from. He just seemed like an Aaron.

Emma (Chef Girl) - Based on Emma Stone. I had the Amazing Spider-Man movies on my mind at the time and I was thinking of Gwen Stacy from those films. Since both Gwen and Chef Girl are blondes, I thought it'd be fitting to name the Chef Girl after Gwen's actor.

Serena (Harmony's mother) - I based this name off the word "serenity." Since "serenity" and "harmony" have similar meanings, I figured it would just fit.

Ana (Shantae's mother) - I don't remember where I found it, but I wanted a name that would sound like a Genie's name and I found Ana the most fitting. Generally, I tried to give all the Genies names that would, you know, fit a Genie. It's pronounced "Ahn-uh" for those who were unsure.

Karnov (Shantae’s father) - I basically just wanted to confirm that fan theory from Pirate’s Curse. The one where the Warrior that Shantae meets in the Village of Lost Souls is actually her father, and that this mysterious warrior is actually the video game character Karnov.

Rosa (Human Rottytops) - I basically just thought of this from fanfics I read in the past with human Rotty. Most of the time, people just call her human form Rosa or Rosie. I found Rosa the better of the two in the end.

Iris (Empress Siren) - I thought it was a pretty name and it fit the purple colors you see on Empress Siren’s design in Seven Sirens.

Agnes (Angler Fish Siren) - I wanted to give her an old sounding name since she looks kinda old. I’m not sure where I got Agnes from, maybe The Simpsons.

Molly (Coral Siren) - A friend at the time showed me a drawing of a character they made named Molly. I liked the name and when I saw Coral Siren, it made me think Molly would be a fitting name for her. I might have also thought of the word mollusk with Coral Siren's marine theme.

Nora (Lobster Siren) - Based on the Norway lobster, and I think Nora is a cute name.

Aja (Vera's mother) - Given the plant-theming that Vera has, I wanted something fitting for her mother as well. In Greek mythology, it means "forest goddess." Her name is pronounced like “Asia.”

Cherami (Harmony’s grandmother) - I had imagined her as a redhead like her granddaughter Harmony, so I wanted a name reminiscent of the color red. I think the name Cherami came to mind from the voice actor for Rotty, Cherami Leigh. The name sounded “reddish” if that makes sense, like a cherry.

Ignatius (Techno Baron) - I don’t remember how I came up with Ignatius exactly, but I wanted a serious name for him since I wanted to make him more ominous than he was in canon.

Esmeralda - I didn’t really plan to do much with this character, but I still wanted to give her a name that fit her status as a Genie. Since I imagined her with green hair, Esmeralda became the name I ultimately chose.

I guess I'll do a little predicting for protag Lodge pairs since I got nothing better to do.

Red and Lapras: The Rika event convinced me that Lodge Misty is probably getting Quagsire, meaning Lapras is on the table.

Leaf and Clefable: N/A

Ethan and Tauros: Protags seem to be getting their NPC versions, and Lyra mentions owning a Tauros in HGSS, so...

Kris and Bayleef/Meganium: Despite everything, she's not beating the Kris = Lyra allegations, although it would complete the triangle between her, Ethan, and Silver...

Lyra and Marill: She's long since been confirmed to have a Marill, how is this not already a thing?!?

Brendan and Combusken: Honestly, Lodge Brendan has a bunch of options. Breloom, Slugma, Swellow, Claydol... But I still say Combusken, just so we can have the whole Torchic line on one team. That, and why should May be the only one with two starters?

Lucas and Infernape: AKA, the final nail in Flint's coffin. WHY was Flint F2P?! People would've pulled his banner for Infernape by itself! Why ya do Ronald McDonald dirty like that?!?

Victor and Drizzile: I want to give him Scorbunny, but I don't see Hop not getting that. So in the inverse of Lodge Gloria, Drizzile it is.

Sync Pair Retrospective - Kalos Neo Champions

This was such a mixed event for me. On the one hand, this is the best outfit Serena has. I love her hair, I love the blue, it's perfect. On this same hand, this is some of the best writing DeNA ever produced. The focus on Calem's rivalry with Serena leaving him feeling like he doesn't measure up, and wanting to push himself to do better so he can stand on equal footing with her, actually held weight. I generally don't like the confirmation of which protagonist is "canon," but one of the only times they do, and they nailed the emotional significance of the other side having literally never won. And when he does get his win, the whole event feels like this big accomplishment, like everyone involved has finally made it.

On the other hand, Greninja. God I hate this frog. Also, no other NC event has lived up to this one. Not even close. Galar NCs were fine but I'm still pissed about Opal, while Kanto NC event couldn't stop sucking Red's dick long enough to remember how Blue's character worked. I'm kinda sour on Neo Champions, despite how much I love the concept.

Neo Champion Serena Serena remains top Water. "But SS Lys-" no really, I need you to trust me on this one. Serena is obscenely good. Low gauge cost, fast self-setup with little to be desired, powerful Water and Dark-type sync that ranks well above the competition, rebuff application for both types, hilarious levels of debuffing on Water, flinch and accuracy debuffing on Dark, etc etc etc. Serena wanted for very little.

Truth be told, I have little to say as well. Nothing has seriously competed with Serena in what she set out to do. She's insane. And in a few days, datamine very well may show us they handed her the Strike Role, and now I legitimately don't think there's any stopping her. If anything, she just got better when SS Lysandre entered the picture, because now she had someone she aligned perfectly with. His Buddy move evaporates sides, her sync deletes center, and both are powered up further by Kalos Pride. What possible limitation is there to be found with her? Even outside of the Water situation, Serena has Dark at her disposal as well. Despite that type being loaded with powerhouses, Serena keeps up perfectly, and if she receives that Strike role, NC Marnie is frankly out of a job. That's how disgusting NC Serena is. This is going to get a buff soon. Not Anni Lillie though, apparently. The meta is unfair.

In spite of that though, I barely use Serena. I legitimately think there's some kind of brain block that prevents me from using pairs that I think are actually too good at what they do. It's like how I never really use SS Lyra or NC Marnie, I just can't bring myself to do it. It's no fun.

Neo Champion Calem Calem, by comparison, kinda sucks. Oh, don't give me that, you know exactly what I'm talking about.

Calem had tremendous value as a role compression support. Not just Rain, but Dark Zone, could be called. Considering only SS Cyrus had this ability before, and SS Cyrus has never rerun, Calem had tremendous value. There's just one teensy tiny problem. The conditional was 10 hits on opponents. Which meant, unless he was running with NC Serena, that condition isn't going up until it's time to sync. Which is completely unhelpful. This is the crux of what makes Calem so frustrating: he has these two tools, but they're inaccessible until the fight drags out a little. His buddy move is a nice injection of stats, but with Team Sharp Entry at 3/5 he can't cap crit, and neither offensive stat moves to cap either. He also messed up, going for Special Moves on Rain and Physical on Dark, when the inverse at the time was the better call. Even now, Special on Rain was a mistake; he does not at all compete with SS Kris for rain dominance. He's far more frail, and lacks her healing potential. And to make his life worse, one of his big benefits was that he buffed both offenses and crit pretty quickly. That was something! Well, it was, until NC Bede dropped, and copied most of his stat boosts on a 2MP move that also gave both kinds of Moves Up Next per use and refreshed every sync and also rotated Free Moves Next and could do SEUN on all allies. Bede put a lot of people out of work...

Thankfully, all he had to do was wait a week and his fortunes were reverse, thanks to SC Zinnia. SC Zinnia has X Atk All, and thus between the two of them, they cap the entire team's physical offensive needs in one turn, while also setting Rebuff. Zinnia's Buddy move hits AoE and flinches, which is fantastic for stealing an extra turn for Calem to ensure his Buddy move goes up with first sync. Pretty much any physical Dark type could fill in and the team would still work. This was a surprisingly powerful answer to NC Marnie's dominance, literally one month later. I switched to Zinnia and never looked back; this was so much more fun. And with Akari, we've now entered a situation where Dark Zone can be called at any time for this team, and Calem supplements later on. They're stronger than they've ever been, and are a huge part of what makes Dark so dominant. It's hard to beat 70% flinch rates, stealing all buffs then preventing them, perpetual Dark Zone, massive DPS on Akari, massive sync on Zinnia, and Calem throwing in Team Endure and evasion boosts. Yes, I know people will run Marnie as the third and Akari as the tank, and it works in CS. I like the bullshit of evasion. But I do see the appeal.

The point is, Calem came around to be really good, and it was kind of exciting. Which is why it's so disappointing his EX Role is Tech. This dude was perfect for either Field or Sprint, and they went with Tech. Hysterically disappointing. Guess we can't expect much good for Supports from these EX roles.

Final Thoughts Kalos NCs were huge, and remain huge. While I dunked on Calem all day on his release, he did have some good traits, and has since been elevated to a position on one of my favorite team compositions. That said, I do think that teams succeeds almost in spite of him, with SC Zinnia doing most of the heavy lifting there. I think the two are fairly lopsided in that regard. Serena's exceptional on both fronts, and has a ton of traits beyond just damage that will keep her relevant long into the figure. Calem is good but feels like he's just waiting to get outclassed. The Rain/Zone combo will keep him relevant, but that Buddy conditional really does him no favors.

Episode 131.

A fair bit happens here.

Episode starts with Leo talking, saying there is no turning back now, Reiji notes ARC-V will start, Yuya demands to be let out, Leo states he needs to revive Ray first. He calls officers to hurry, we see the shot of operating room. There are four spheres representing the four girls.

After the opening, a pink glow comes from the girls, and Reira sees a vision of Ray descending from heaven in her golden form. Reiji tells them to wake up.

Reiji states they must stop the dimensional merger, Reira states only they can stop Z-ARC. Reira states the world will be destroyed, Reiji tells them to wake up.

Reira states Reiji is wrong, Ray has told her, and they can understand her. Reiji dismisses this, Reira continues to say there are specific steps to stop Z-ARC. Reira relays Ray's speech, she must be revived before Zarc, otherwise they will destroy the world.

Reiji notes Reira's ability to read minds, but dismisses this, noting that if Leo is successful, all of them inside the dimensions might disappear. Reira asks if he doesn't want to revive Ray, Reiji dismisses it again, and states they must save Serena and others.

Reiji states if he wants all of their friends to vanish. Reira stops, but Ray flashes once more, Reira notes how Ray only has them.

Reira challenges Reiji.

Reiji starts with his multi-Summon. This time, he uses Darius instead of Caesar.

Reira notes Reiji's tactic, and states they have the card they got from Reiji, we get a flashback. In the flashback, Reiji states Reira cannot see any light, thus should get the light from opponent's, hence he gives C/C Critical Eye.

Reira talks about about how Reiji told them Duelists are those that shine, and since Reiji is very dazzling, they can use their light, thus they cannot lose. Reiji activates his Trap in response, Dark Contract with the Eternal Darkness.

Reiji states they cannot do anything, since they were teached by Reiji, they can only surrender. Reira rejects this, Summoning Film Magician.

Reiji wonders if he would challange himself in this situation.

After the adbreak, Yuya screams, and notes the other Yuboys are nearby, and he cannot get close to them, otherwise he would lose control, and tells Reiji to hurry up.

Reiji destroys Film Magician, and directly attacks. Reiji has a flashback about Reira, states he gave them light in darkness, but they cannot win, since they are a mere vessel.

A bit of a break here, the vessel talk is obvious allusion to regular Yugi, particularly his animé incarnation.

Reira activates Action Magic: Damage Vanish to stop the next attack, Reira states they picked it up during the previous attack, and this is Lancers' style of fighting.

Officer notes ARC-V is at %60, and Yuzu will transfer. Yuzu dissolves, and the pink sphere on the screen goes blank. She is dead now, yay.

The operator room has 5 operators, with their seats looking like NERV operators.

Leo says Ray... once more.

Reira states they went this far thanks to Reiji, but after this point, they need to rely on Ray. Ray tells them to endure a bit more. Reira gets the card Pure Ray.

Reira copies Reiji's Eternal Darkness. Reira then uses Pure Ray to destroy both Eternal Darknesses. We see the Golden Ray, so does Reiji, then Pure Ray's second effect lowers all monsters' ATK.

A bit of a break here. Pure Ray is a manifestation of Ray's power (duh), and its second effect is an inverse Smile World. This is still under the assumption that Z-ARC chose Yusho as Yuya's parental guide, of course.

Reiji is shocked by the event.

Reira uses their Critical Eye Fusion combo, but Summons a new monster that Reiji doesn't know, another manifestation of Ray's power.

Reiji notes he isn't the one giving Reira light, wonders if Reira is trying to surpass him. We get the other Golden Ray. After Alexander's destruction, Reiji notes, with an ego, Reira now has awakened a new power. After Genghis's defeat, Reiji wonders where he has gone wrong. With the third attack, Reiji notes he created a monster named Reira.

There is an obvious Leo-Zarc vs. Reiji-Reira parallel going on.

We return to Yuri vs. Yugo Duel. Yuri re-Summons Greedy Venom, and taunts Yugo. Yusho notes Yugo won't fail to Z-ARC as long as he keeps his self.

Yugo destroys Greedy Venom once more, Yuri asks whether Yugo doesn't know its effect, but Yugo remembers the previous phase of the Duel. Greedy Venom returns for the third time. Yugo notes Edo, and Kaito taught him victory won't come without pain. With Extra Shave Reborn, Yugo brings back Clear Wing, lowers Greedy Venom's attack, and destroys his own monster to give Clear Wing ATK.

Yusho notes with this tactic, Yugo can win with one attack, but Yuri halves the damage, and uses his own Extra Shave Reborn to Summon Starving Venom. Yuri steals Clear Wing's effect in his turn. Yuri states Yugo cannot use Clear Wing's effect negation, because it would cause self-destruction.

Since Yugo cannot activate Clear Wing's effect, Yuri activates it to destroy his own monster, and defeats Yugo with his own monster's effect.

Though Yuya isn't aware yet, Yuzu is already dead. It's okay though, she will come back, first inside Ray, then properly in the tail of the end of series.

Yuri's Duel with Yugo strongly parallels with Reira's Duel with Reiji, as it is heavily dependent on using the opponent's strength. The parallels probably imply Yuri's Duel style is heavily influenced by Leo in the animé canon, but that's probably a longer topic, since it doesn't deviate too radically from Academia's Dueling style (either from GX incarnation, or ARC-V incarnation).

We haven't previously talked about this, but Ray at this point is near full agreement with Leo, and while knows all the people Reiji met, including her own pieces, are individuals with their own lives to consider intellectually, she doesn't consider her own pieces, or people from the dimensions to be their own people on an emotional level, much like Leo. We are supposed to be sympathize with Ray's point at this point, until she is obviously disproven, but since series will vindicate Reiji's viewpoint (a viewpoint he gained thanks to Yuya), there is not much reason to pretend. She is simply wrong, and kind of sucks at the whole being God thing.

This becomes more ironic that the only person in the entire show who will agree with her besides Reira will become Yuya. Not even Leo will pretend this is true. I guess when you adopt a YGO protag by retroactively becoming their spirit partner, you can make facts conform to you, instead of the other way around.

Speaking of Reira, yes, within the show, they are actually the allusion to regular Yugi, not Yuya, though that is subject to further change, since Yuya might some sort of final Duel Deck anytime soon.

We haven't talked about this in the previous Reira Duel in Season 2 duel, but Film Magician is presumably an earlier manifestation of Ray's essence, much like Tuning Magician was implied to be. It is not part of the Pendulum Magicians' archetype due to its Japanese name, but it has similar theming.

Much like two episodes, Reiji making note of Serena is kind of random in this context as well, but I appreciate it. But yes, while others consider the Bracelet Girls as "Yuzu-tachi", Reiji considers them as "Serena-tachi", since Serena was the first one she met, both in Revival Zero's file, but also in person.

The operators' room's screen features 4 spheres, each with the colors of En Cards, and each sphere, while active, features a golden ball, presumably the piece of Ray inside the Girls (it is not that large compared to En Cards' essences then, haha). Leo states that the liquidation of the girls will also help the fusing of the worlds, but it is unclear how that works. Either way, the operating screen suggests essences of En Cards in the girls are also being used in this process.

My guess is that En Cards essences work as dimensional barriers within the dimensions, so absorbing the girls help to weaken them, presumably by spoofing ARC-V reactor's signal by making Dimensions incorrectly register foreign elements with the same signal as part of them. Alternatively, since the dimensional differences are caused by the Dimensional Dragons, En Cards just negate their essences left over in the Dimensions, thus by proxy removing the dimensional barriers. Show bible's explanation is probably dumber, though.

38 and 39 Cade Yeager!

38. What do others admire most about their personality?

As frustrating as Cade can be, his stubbornness and loyalty rival that of Optimus and Bumblebee. He canonly spends 5 years living on the run with Prime’s 2.0 Team, and literally climbs atop fucking Nemesis Prime to try and snap his friend out of it...

Where Resonance is concerned, the gang also loves Cade’s sense of self and confidence. He is an inventor and father first, but an autobot medic second and never turns away a Transformer in need. His desire to help any and all bots leads even some Decepticons to bring their wounded to him--they know Cade Yeager will keep Optimus from going at them, and they know that provided they don’t threaten what’s Cade’s, they can get patched up and split. It also helps Cade doesn’t answer to the government and doesn’t even plan to.

39. What does their happily ever after look like?

Long version: The war with Transformers vs Humans over, and even the war with Cons vs Bots over. (Of course, both of those are easier said than done!) Living on his farm, Tessa safe and happy and living her best life, Vivi and Isabella as well. He and Optimus just getting to be domestic, getting to rest, and him treating any bots that need his help. Optimus being commander but knowing that he’s allowed weakness and comfort when he needs it, that no one is perfect.

Short version: fucking his Prime of a husband. No, Cade does not take critiques.

I would’ve loved to see Dan and Serena run away together what I think would’ve made it better if Dan was the one who prompted it. Like he just got his heartbroken and he’s like “screw this let’s get out of here”

ooooooh. yes. and serena would resist at first, because she remembers leaving and coming back - nothing stays the same, you lose the few friends you have and you need to repair those relationships. but dan just looks at her, completely lost, lost in a way she’s never seen him before, and he’s like. can we leave together? and she can’t say no, not when he looks so sad. 

i feel like dan would blow off rome, to be extremely honest. rome was going to be his place with blair. they made travel plans! he and serena would go somewhere. everywhere. they would just need to feel like they’re ~far away~ enough.
