Dedicated to those of you who’ve in any way caused or encouraged non-ironic Georgina feelings, because I refuse to deal with this alone. Text version of the tracklist and commentary under the cut:

I was thinking a lot about substance abuse and its place in Georgina’s narrative and, like, the way that (like with every other character) it’s never taken seriously that she’s struggling with it, and about that sense of obsession and loss of control, and this song plays it very straight but… there’s something there

12. “Jenny (I Wanna Ruin Our Friendship),” Studio Killers. Do I think Georgina even let herself know this much about her feelings? No. Is this song still here? Yes

24. “Bury Me Facedown,” grandson. I really am surprised I can’t remember a Blair one liner about how Georgina is like a bad penny

25. “Runs In The Family,” Amanda Palmer. I say it runs in the family/This family that carries me to such great lengths/To open my legs up to anyone who'll have me/It runs in the family, I come by it honestly

26. “Plump,” Hole. There are so many things we don’t really know about why Georgina kept Milo, or about how her parents influenced her taking her, or about what she was like as a parent, or about how she felt about becoming a parent and… yeah

27. “Hot Mess,” Cobra Starship. If you're dancing up on tables/You go, you go, you got it, girl/Say that you're unstable/You go coco, you got it, girl

28. “Versions of Violence,” Alanis Morissette. Okay look this is significantly just a list of signs of emotional abuse and like. What is more Georgina than headfuckery (and herself being equally screwed up)

29. “A Little Party Never Killed Nobody (All We Got,” Fergie, Q-Tip, GoonRock. A little party never killed nobody/So we gon' dance until we drop/A little party never killed nobody/Right here, right now's all we got

30. “Sin Wagon,” The Chicks. This was the first or second song on here—I was thinking of just throwing a mainstream worship song in here and then cutting back to party and mayhem, just for the dissonance, and then I remembered this and the ‘Jesus and I have redefined our relationship’ vibes were,,, perfect. Of course, the fiddles it starts with were dissonance enough on their own, and the overall work comes back to that same ‘I’m gonna burn it all down because fuck it, I deserve it’ so… here it is. Our conclusion

Industry conversations - Anastasia Seregina

In the sixth analysis of kinetic type I looked at the work of Anastasia Seregina. She presented a series of motion designs in her work that have a dark, mirrored effect throughout them. I reached out to Anastasia with my series of questions and she replied to me requesting to answer them in video form, which I happily accepted.

The following conversation is long, therefore I will take key moments from the video and apply them as answers to my questions. The full video can be found in my evidence section of this post.

1) After doing a school project Anastasia realised she had a knack for it. She realised that kinetic type was an excellent way to visualise information. 2) The initial starting ideation phase is what Anastasia considers to be the most difficult part of the project. As-well as attempting to learn new techniques that require large amounts of CPU power, technological challenges is one of the biggest factors that limits Anastasia. 3) It's came naturally to her. Anastasia doesn't really think about it. 4) Always, always comes from the music (audio). She can spend a very long time looking for the right audio. She talks about how she knows studios that create the design first and then ask a composer to create music for the design, however, she does not do that. 5) Anastasia talks about a rule for kinetic type design; we should be able to read the text out lout before it moves to the next thing. If it can't be read out loud then its too short. If there's a period of time after you read the text then its too long and considered redundant. 6) At the very beginning we start with understanding the medium and furthermore understanding the special qualities it has. Letters and type had to be much smaller than Anastasia is normally used too when she created titles for a cinematic video. Anastasia talks about the difference between an instagram video vs a cinema movie. The consumer will stay for the movie since they paid for it. The consumer can leave at any point when on instagram since there's nothing preventing them from leaving. 7) She follows the latest trends with studios, she labels the following as exemplars: Dia Studio, Russian Studio Onym NikitaIsIf and Joe de Castro. 8) Anastasia has only worked with English and Cyrillic (Russian). She states that Cyrillic is much more difficult to work with because it doesn't "look as pretty. . . as the English one". She states using the simplest typeface possible is the key, listing Helvetia as an example. 9) N/A 10) Anastasia sees the future of kinetic type incorporating more programming into the work, by extension allowing more complex tools to be utilised. A heavier lean into 3D type to follow since a lot of students are learning how to code and as a result helps them evolve as creative thinkers. Anastasia also believes that kinetic typography will be used more in the webspace and phone apps, she states that she sees this already happening but thinks that in several years it will be incredibly common. 11) Hard work. If we really want to make it as kinetic designers than the hard work is needed. She states that it "really takes a lot of work" but that if we want to see results than it must be done. Sometimes we will hate the process "especially when it comes to rendering". Many references also make especially useful, whether it be by following people or reaching out to them for advice. Anastasia wishes me luck with the project and says goodbye.

Reflection:

Anastasia was the first person that gave a video response and I think that in comparison to the others really gave depth to what she said. I find myself better retaining information she's said when putting a face to the answers. I thought that the answers in question were all incredibly valuable, especially about the rule for making sure type is legible. The kinetic designers/studios she listed under the question pertaining to how she keeps up-to-date with the latest trends is something I will have to look into myself. Overall I am incredibly happy I was able to converse with Anastasia and the answers she gave me.

What are your insights on Georgina's relationships with Serena and Dan?

ooooh interesting and frighteningly open-ended!

it's interesting because Georgina is such a different personality from them, yeah? And I think that's the crux of the draw for her: Serena and Dan both have this compulsion to always believe and hope for the best in people, even Georgina. Like, there's a reason she and Serena became friends in the first place, right? There's a wholesomeness to the both of them that Georgina finds compelling, and I think it's both because she knows she can corrupt it, but never so much that they'll shut her out forever.

and for Serena's and Dan's sides of it...we don't really see all of what Serena and Georgina did together, but we can guess, and I think for her she was almost - set free from the idea that she didn't have to be Good with Georgie, they could be silly and self-destructive and Serena could sort of...surrender to the pain she couldn't name, but it never would be as bad or as dark as whatever Georgina was carrying. Blair is the friend who's always trying to pull her up, to keep her grades good and her mom from finding out her indiscretions but Georgina didn't ask perfection of her, and for the broken teenage girl that Serena was before the show, that had to be kind of liberating.

For Dan its similar, I think, but a little less fraught, up until Milo I suppose. With Georgina he doesn't have to be the good student or the good brother or the good son or the good boyfriend, and he can sort of....surrender to his bitchy side? Because he is a Bitch (I love him so much), which is something he has in common with Georgina, they're equals in a way for that. and in s3 Georgina is the person that he can make bad decisions with and have uncomplicated kinky fun. the sub!dan agenda begins with georgina after all. Until it becomes complicated, because he hadn't bargained for Georgina's possessive/jealous streak.

and Serena and Dan both fall out with her because Georgina crosses a line that is so egregious and nearly breaks both of them. for Serena it's the Pete trauma, and for Dan, it's Milo. but what interesting is this: Serena cuts Georgie out and means it, wants nothing to do with her and takes pains to keep her out of her life when she comes back to nyc. And after s1, she keeps on keeping her distance, Georgina and Serena never interact in any meaningful capacity after that, and they never initiate contact, it's always Blair or Chuck or Dan that brings Georgina back around for whatever reason.

But after Milo, arguably the biggest heartbreak of Dan's life, he still interfaces with Georgina directly in s5 and, of course, has a close personal relationship with her in s6. Serena, the always gracious, always forgiving Serena couldn't open the door to Georgina again. but Dan could. Dan does. and I think it mostly has to do with the spot he's put in in s5, being so grievously betrayed by Blair and Serena (at the same time!), and effectively abandoned by everyone else in his support system (Alison, Jen, Vanessa, Rufus, Nate). Georgina has already done the worst thing she could ever do to him (take his child away from him), so in his hurt, he goes with the devil he knows, and steers into the skid, leaning into the aspects of his personality that being with Georgina brings out in him, without a check this time.

going through my meta tag for that previous ask, I found a post from Ivy that says it plays into "Dan's need to belong to someone" he needs to belong to someone, and if it's Georgina, then so be it. there's something to her possessiveness of him that - in spite of himself - he cannot walk away from. And in that sense, Serena shows more strength of character than he does, because it's a marker of her personality too, wanting to belong to someone, always trying to make a home in someone else. unlike Dan, Serena knew that the person she was with Georgina is a person she never wanted to go back to. and she decided that her sense of self wasn't worth sacrificing for a home (a lesson she learned from being with dan! he looks at me like I want to believe in myself and all that).

looking at the senamarais aesthetic post from 3x03, and tbh i think the biggest piece of evidence that georgina did actually like dan (and wasn’t just screwing with him/trying to piss serena off) is her making him her desktop background. who is that for if not for her? no one else would likely even see it, and she’s stuck staring at his dumb face all day lol

yeah!! i noticed this on my first watch, as well. i remember seeing that desktop background and being like “oh my god, she actually likes him!” and i think it’s realising that he wasn’t into her that made her do the whole ‘brings scott to rufly wedding’ thing. like the reason she caused that damage seemed to be her way of processing that her dream romance with dan humphrey was dead.

i honestly think it’s canon that georgina is the ex that serena and dan had in common. that bit (in this very episode i think) where serena says something along the lines of “if georgina likes you, she won’t let you go, believe me, i should know” cannot be interpreted in any other way. but we’ve been over this! 

i have a georgie pov fic about her being in love with serena, falling out of love with serena, and falling in love with dan. spanning pre-series and ending pre s4, at the bit where she lies to dan about milo, so here’s a mandatory link, just in case you want :)  

i know you weren’t even talking about serena, but i’m just really obsessed with the potental dan & serena & georgina dynamic. i think they’re probably the most fucky trio on the show. like, imo, even chuck & blair & dan as a trio isn’t as fucky, though they come a pretty close second. i have a deregina fic too - which feels really evil to rec.....  but since we’re talking about it........here.....
