I was going to write a long thing about the parallels between Sera and Rachel....but honestly I think using photo's gets my point across pretty heavily.

Do you sometimes think about the fact that Sera only got to know her daughter for three years at best and then Rachel died? Do you sometimes think about everything that it implies? Do you think Chloe was the one who told her? Do you think she relapsed? Do you think about how much she was angry at James, the fact he did so much to protect Rachel, going as far as not letting Sera see her for years, only for Rachel to die at 19? Do you think she thought about how she was getting all this hope backâ to see her daughter grow up, see her graduating, become an adult, this hope to be a real mother, only for said hopes to be crushed so early?
But, even worse, if she never reconnect with Rachel, and learn about her death. The way she purposefully kept herself away from her daughter, because she thought it was the right thing to do to protect her, the right thing to do as a mother. The right thing to do so Rachel could be happy. But in the end, all it did was refraining her from ever knowing her own daughter. And now, she has to live with this guilt. Knowing the last time sheâs seen Rachel was when she was still a baby, and that she will never get to see her older.
Do you?

Just using the info we got from Life is Strange? Could have been one of a thousand reasons. As someone who lived in small ass towns for a good chunk of her life, getting your ass out and trying to live a better life is a very common mindset to develop.
However, I actually think that Before the Storm gives us one hell of a good reason for her to want to flee, especially when we look at the X factor it introduced that was Sera.
Because between BtS and LiS? Sera died.
Think of it this way: Rachel was a hard driven and ambitious young woman. I cannot see any justification for Rachel to drop the Sera matter, even if Chloe lies to her and claims she couldn't find her. Rachel doesn't seem to be the type that would have given up easily on that, and I seriously doubt Chloe could have kept her from pursuing the matter.
Simply put, either Rachel is told the truth, tracks down or is reunited with Sera, and grows bitter and self destructive as she watches Sera slowly succumb to addiction. Or Chloe lies, Rachel continues to look with a reluctant Chloe, finds her (Sera might lie about her and Chloe meeting), and eventually grows bitter and self destructive as she watches Sera slowly succumb to addiction.
I don't think Rachel had a sweet life in BtS. I think she had an illusion of a good home life that was agonizingly peeled away from her when she realized just how much of a gilded cage she was in.
I'll admit I don't necessarily like Rachel (she REALLY takes after her dad, even if she doesn't realize it), but I do understand her.
Why did Rachel Amber want to leave?
I was recently speculating with some friends as to why Rachel Amber wanted to leave so badly and I must admit my thoughts went to some dark places there. I'd half-written a post and then decided to purge it and instead offer the question to you all.
What reason do you think Rachel had for wanting so desperately to leave Arcadia Bay, to the point she was talking to truck drivers and the like trying to find a way out of Arcadia Bay? We'll ignore the backstory that Deck Nine came up with because honestly? Rachel had a pretty damn sweet life in BtS, and no real reason for so desperately needing to leave.
So. Ignore the story about Sera, and Rose and James Amber, and all of that. Consider just Dontnod's story rather than Deck Nine's. Why did Rachel Amber want or need to leave Arcadia Bay so badly?
I have my suspicions. I'd love to hear yours.

The BTS ending where Rachel gets to meet Sera is heartbreaking once you consider what happens to Rachel later on. Imagine not being allowed to see your daughter, finally meeting her, only for her to die when sheâs still just a teen đ
I really wonder what happened to Sera after the end of Before The Storm.
In the first game, Chloe insinuates that she's talked to Rachel's parents and says they're "in denial." We never learn what that means, and because LIS was made before BTS we don't know if Chloe meant that she spoke to James/Rose, Sera, or all three of them.
I'm going to assume she talked to Sera and she was equally in denial, which is sad but makes sense to me. It was probably easer for her to imagine that Rachel was just happily on a beach somewhere than to face the reality that she only got to really know her daughter for three years before she died.
I really wonder what Sera is up to in the LIS universe. She doesn't live in Arcadia, so it's very likely that she wasn't in town for the storm if that's the route the player goes. But I do wonder her reaction to hearing that Arcadia Bay was wiped out or that Chloe died and they found Rachel as a consequence. And, on the storm route, I wonder if Chloe ever reached out to Sera to let her know what happened, or if she's just in the dark, assuming that Rachel might come back on day.

Convincing Sera to meet her daughter in Before the Storm honestly felt like trying to refrain Kate from jumping in Life is Strange 1. So like, can we say Max backtalked Kate. Does that make sense.

Karen, Rachel, Sera.... Interesting
Max wears Rachel like a costume, awkward and playful and goofy, in love with the idea of her without ever seeing herself capable of matching it, but Daniel is Karen, especially in ep 2, the glimpses of her younger self that we get there, imaginative and lonely, rebellious and curious, lost and hurting. he's what she was, the pinnacle of the dreams and fears of everyone around him without knowing quite what to do about that responsibility, a rising star capable of inadvertently burning his surrounds. Daniel manipulates Chris and potentially gets him hurt, an echo of Karen's cruelty towards Sean and her parents, only Karen didn't gain the power to hurt until adulthood, when her cruelty is tempered by knowledge, and Daniel is dangerous now, with none of the awareness and twice the power. so of course he clings to Karen's example, Karen's things, a version of himself who might have done have bad things, but not on a scale as gruesome as Matthews or the cougar, a reflection that he thinks can provide control and security better than Sean ever could because moms do everything better. and he's wrong, and it ends up fracturing the fragile relationship between the brothers and their grandparents, to the core, but what choice did he really have?

12, 18 and 19 for the ask game
12. the unpopular character that you actually like and why more people should like them: Oh there are several I could name. I'd probably go with Brooke, though. She's so petty! She's funny to me :3
18. it's absolutely criminal that the fandom has been sleeping on... I reblogged a post about this a little while ago, but Nathan with powers. Heck, everyone with powers! (That's sort of what my Greyspace AU is gonna be like :3 ) Also, I really think people should do more crossovers with Until Dawn. They're very similar games in a lot of little ways.
19. you're mad/ashamed/horrified you actually kind of like... I think the Rachel/Frank dynamic is really interesting. Of course, it's a hideously unhealthy relationship, is illegal, has a serious power imbalance, and may very well have been coerced on Rachel's part. I'd like to see an AU where the sexy stuff gets extracted and instead, he's a big brother figure to her, or, heck, if Frank, Sera, and Rachel become kind of an offbeat little family of choice. (Also, I love David as a character, but I'm not ashamed of that.)

Bitch has a mild amount of her shit together, courtesy of writing some self-indulgent Jefferson murder fic in which Rachel survives. I am still bananas over Life is Strange: Before the Storm. It might be my new favorite game in the series (previously True Colors, which is also good, go play it.)
So what about it made me bananas? Overall, the way the game shows Chloeâs day to day life in a way Life is Strange (1) didnât. LiS1 has absurdly high stakes, a moral conundrum (sort of), serial killers, missing girls, asshole adults, oh my! You get a fair few normal moments between Chloe and Max, which typically end in Max rescuing Chloe from dying through her rewind.
We also donât really know how Chloe got to where she is in the first game, or what she used to be like. We get hints, and Chloeâs core character is definitely someone who loves fiercely but has been hurt so much and so badly that sheâs had to withdraw almost completely to survive. Before the Storm (BtS) shows us Chloe, and gives a path for why she is in such a bad place in LiS1.
I thought I might do this by episode, but I really canât. I gotta take it by character, so letâs get the worst out of the way first: David and Joyce. Fuck I hate them both. David is an abusive piece of shit who manipulates Joyce and Chloe both. When Chloe offers up something about herself, he makes it about him, his trauma and grief, and demands she respect it when he has made it clear he has no respect for her. If she refuses, he immediately turns violent. Fuck David
And Joyce. The enabler to Davidâs abuse, because Chloeâs such a problem child. At the end of episode one, I saw âYou were mean to Joyceâ as a decision point and laughed. I wasnât mean to Joyce, I picked the honest option. To Joyce in BtS, anything that doesnât support her completely, and her delusion of a happy family is mean and petty. She âboth sidesâ every argument between Chloe and David, and when Chloe tries to tell her how she feels, Joyce shuts her out. Chloe spends several days after getting suspended not at home, and Joyce never asks where she was. She doesnât want her daughter. She sure as hell doesnât deserve her.
Moving on: Rachel. I liked Rachel a lot. Mostly I knew her from LiS1 and fics, many of which paint her as a manipulator, some as an outright villain. I didnât see it. I saw a teen whose smart but easily bored, and has the usual amount of teen stupidity (no offense to any teens who see this, you donât necessarily get less dumb as you age, you find new ways to be stupid.) She fucks up, but sheâs also going through probably the worst week of her life during BtS (so far.) Sheâs impulsive and (I believe) too prone to lying as the easy way out, but sheâs also got James Amber for a dad.
Jimbo is where this game gets confused. They clearly show he IS a liar and a manipulator, but seem to try to walk it back sometimes? Iâm certain heâs gaslit both Rose and Sera into believing he (and only he) knows whatâs best for Rachel, and did such a great job on Sera she is nearly killed and still tries to defend him as a good father for Rachel. Maâam. No. (Iâm actually headcanoning that Sera did die from the overdose, and Chloe talks to her ghost - seriously, just a short while before she spoke to ghost William, and her journal makes it clear that sheâs no longer easily able to differentiate between dreams and waking.) He sucks, but he could have been a much stronger villain.
Really, thatâs my thing with all the LiS games: they could be much stronger if they dropped the high stakes sudden conspiracy twist, and stuck to their themes. BtS is about the powerlessness of being a teenager, surrounded by adults you canât trust because they have shown, repeatedly, they donât care about you as a person. Itâs about the light at the end of the tunnel, if youâre living in an abusive home, as Chloe and Rachel both are. The hope and sweetness of youth, and the way the world shifts underfoot as you become an adult. Where youâre no longer sure of what you once knew.
Thatâs how I see Chloe. Someone so strong, and brave, and smart, shut down by a world that is increasingly hostile the more she speaks her mind. Despite not really liking the scene with Damon in the junkyard, my mind went to the scene on the beach in LiS 1 where Frank threatens Max. Iâm sure she was thinking of how she froze up and it nearly got Rachel killed. BtS enriches Chloe immensely as a character, and shows us Rachel, who before we only knew from othersâ memories, idealized or not.
Thereâs a lot not to like, and some disturbingly out of character scenes, Victoriaâs drugging chief among them. But fuck canon, every writer loses their shit sometimes. Thatâs what fic is for. Iâm really glad I played BtS.
i finished my first before the storm playthrough and bring you this live reaction:

So I was thinking about the different Rachel's in the multiverse and I realized something about the Rachel from the Waves Timeline.
She doesn't have the star tattoo on her left wrist like the main!verse Rachel does. I even went back through all the issues she appears in to make sure it wasn't an art mistake. I didn't see her star tattoo once. This despite her very clearly having her dragon tattoo. It was a deliberate choice to not include it on her design. Waves!Rachel never got the star, but main!Rachel did.
My personal headcanon is that the main timelines (as seen in Season 01) are the ones where Chloe wasn't brave enough to pursue a romance with Rachel and asked her to get a star tattoo on her wrist as a symbol of their promise to leave Arcadia Bay. Plus, throughout season 1 Chloe never refers to Rachel as "my girlfriend" or "my ex who I'm still friends with." Rachel is very explicitly referred to as Chloe's friend who she happens to have a crush on.
Additionally, there's Rachel's thrown out letter in the second episode of s1, where she hints to her connection with Jeffershit.
Writing a letter to your girlfriend about meeting a guy who you're interested in isn't exactly something people do, furthering the implications that they had a platonic relationship in the main!verse.
(Four more images showing Waves!Rachel doesn't have a star tattoo).
Waves!verse Rachel doesn't have the tattoo because she was romanced by Chloe, and they sealed their promise to leave the Bay together with the romance only option, the kiss.
Unfortunately, I still think she ended up in the dark room (likely kidnapped and drugged) at some point because of the end credit teaser from BTS. (Considering both she and Chloe have seemingly gone completely sober off of drugs in the Waves timeline I think that's a further hint). Something about her experience just changed and she ended up surviving.
Another thing of note...
The above Rachel, who is from a third timeline where she survived (because Jeffershit got fired for stealing before he and Nathan could hurt her) and goes to school with Chloe and Max, has her inner left wrist conviently not shown in her brief appearance. She also doesn't seem to have her bracelet. (She has a bracelet but not the bracelet).
I think this is a Rachel who either got a star tattoo for Chloe and later gave her bracelet to Frank, or a Rachel who gave Chloe her bracelet. In the latter case, I think this is the timeline where Chloe gave the bracelet to Sera, and she and Rachel got to meet. Thus Sera's influence may have gave Rachel enough know-how on men to realize Jeffershit was a creep. (I know you can have them meet without the bracelet but it's significantly harder, especially due to a glitch in the game's counter).
Whether or not this Rachel was still groomed by Frank is unclear. She mentions meeting him briefly, but it could just be for weed.
Tldr: Here are the possible timelines
Main!verse Rachel isn't romanced -> she agrees to get a tattoo as a sign of the promise -> either the truth or lie ending is chosen for bts -> Rachel starts seeing Frank/is groomed by Frank -> Jeffershit gets hired -> doesn't see the warning signs and is groomed by him -> is killed by Jeffershit and Nathan -> is found by Chloe and Max -> either the Sacrifice Chloe or the Sacrifice Bay ending is picked -> Lis 2 -> True Colors
Dust!verse: Same as the above but Sacrifice Arcadia Bay is definitely picked. (Also the universe where Steph's mom, Joyce, Warren, Frank and Pompedou dies, but Victoria, David, and Alyssa are confirmed to live) -> Lis 2 (Sacrifice Bay variant) -> True Colors (Sacrifice Bay variant)
Waves!verse: Rachel is romanced -> kisses Chloe to seal the promise -> either the truth or the lie ending from bts can happen -> she likely doesn't get groomed by Frank because she's committed to Chloe -> possibly ends up in the dark room but lives somehow -> She and Chloe make it to LA -> a possibly unseen variation of Lis 2 happens -> a possibly unseen variation of True Colors happens
4th!verse: Rachel isn't romanced -> gives Chloe her bracelet to seal the promise -> Chloe gives Sera the bracelet -> truth ending for bts + she meets Sera -> might have been groomed by Frank (unclear) -> ends up meeting her world's max -> was able to pick up on Jeffershit's bad vibes and managed to avoid the Dark Room all together -> Jeffershit is fired for stealing supplies -> jeffershit is arrested for sleeping with a student -> ??
