Waiting For It To Feel Good: The Songwriting of Sera Cahoone Sera Cahoone For many years Sera Cahoone has purveyed a mode of songwriting vulnerably subdued, her vocals a scope of tender suppleness. Her distinguishing contribution is in the understated, hushed temperament of her art. Her path to music, however, has much rowdier origins, the fancies of a pre-teen whose first “obsession” was…

Morning Earworm: Our organization’s virtual holiday party was yesterday and we were treated to performances from local musicians, or far-away ones, depending on what office you worked in (or, rather, used to). And since I became a Carissa’s Wierd fan this year, it was extra cool to see Sera Cahoone. She played this song and I gave it a few extra spins last night.  The other performer last night was Thornetta Davis, who was amazing and really summed up everything I miss about seeing music live. I bought one of her albums afterward to kick off my 2021 resolution of buying more music from artists I enjoy. For as much as I love music, I’ve fallen into a bad habit over the last five or so years of not purchasing it, usually buying lots of concert tickets instead. Obvs that not really possible right now, save for some streaming shows. I really appreciated the chance to watch some performances last night; I know so many of my friends who are artists are having a hard time right now.

Sera Cahoone Album Review: From Where I Started
Tumblr media
BY JORDAN MAINZER
“Home is where the heart is” is certainly a cliche, but Sera Cahoone shares the sentiment with such genuine warmth that it feels new. On her new album From Where I Started, she provides a full-bodied collection of songs about her journey to not necessarily find but rather define home. Listening to it, I’m reminded of Joan Shelley--not just because the two singers have similar voices, but because of a line in a song on Shelley’s self-titled album: “If you were made for me, we’d be home.” Home is a tangible location, a person, a feeling.
It’s fitting, then, that an album about defining home begins with wrenches thrown into Cahoone’s concept of the status quo. On “Always Turn Around”, she talks about getting over stage fright. “First years I ever played my/my songs for anyone/my back was toward them and I sang down to the ground,” she details. But eventually, she “Got so tired of being nervous that I finally turned around.” In contrast to the nerves of the subject matter, the acoustic guitar and singing is simply gorgeous. Things take a turn for the darker, however, on “Ladybug”. A song with eerie slide guitar and drums more subtly prominent than many others on the album, it describes the real-life murder of Cahoone’s cousin by a domestic partner. And on “Up to Me”, she sings, “I wanna be your lover / Like no other / But it's not really up to me.” On these songs, the subject matter may be drastically different, especially considering the disturbing and personal nature of “Ladybug”. But the general idea is the same: The nature of relationships is not something that you can completely control.
So where does Cahoone find solace and make sense of the world and herself? In song. The stomp of the fiddle-featuring “Only One” is easy going and effortless, Cahoone, singing “Honey, all I got is time.” “Not Like I” is slow-burning, and the dark “Dusty Lungs”, meanwhile, features layered vocals and great violin work. Perhaps the only yawner on the album is “Tables Turned”, an acoustic letdown that loses its intimacy after you’re still taken by “Dusty Lungs”. But the album ends on a high note with a song titled--you guessed it--”House Our Own”. It’s not a coincidence that the track contains many of the subtle extra elements teased throughout the album--layered vocals here, slide guitar there--but the drums really take a front seat. It’s also the catchiest song on the record, and, like the best closing tracks, one that makes you want to start it all over again. In telling us where she came from, Cahoone has made an album worthy enough to make us, too, reflect on the different things we consider home.

2. Tall Dwarfs, “Nothing’s Going to Happen”
3. The Gerbils, “Crayon Box”

The bands put out these statements on why this event was happening:
We as Death Cab For Cutie are appalled by the divisive, xenophobic and misogynistic agenda the Trump Administration is attempting to implement in our country. We are proud to be joining our friends The Decemberists and Sera Cahoone in support of both the ACLU and Planned Parenthood at this pivotal time in our nation’s history.
And here’s Colin Meloy’s from the Decembrists:
There are enough stories from this last week alone — the Trump administration’s attempts to curtail first amendment protections and the GOP’s passage of the heartless AHCA — to remind us that organizations like Planned Parenthood and the ACLU need our support now more than ever. We Decemberists are proud to do our bit to help those orgs stay funded and active in their communities, both local and nationwide. RESIST!

The 11-song cycle finds her returning to her DIY musical roots, after releasing three albums via Sub Pop and servng as a drummer with Band of Horses and Carissa's Weird. It also finds her parsing what it means to be alive, through heartache and hope … emotions that are infinite, unforeseen, and always in season, no matter who you are.

Sera Cahoone’s “Only One” Is a Breezy Take on Finding New Love
Seattle songwriter Sera Cahoone first gained notoriety through her initial releases on Sub Pop, catching the ears of fans and critics alike with infectious melodies and a no-frills approach to crafting thoughtful roots music. “Only One,” a happy-go-lucky new song from her forthcoming fourth album From Where I Started, pays homage to those Americana roots with its foot-stomping beat and fiddle solo, all the while looking optimistically towards the future through the rose-tinted lens of a burgeoning romance.
