Heroes Avoid Sweep Behind Eric Jokisch!
Heroes 9 Twins 4 W-Jokisch (2-0) L-Cha (2-1)
The Kiwoom Heroes had started off the 2020 season with a (6-1) record until they hit a four-game losing streak. The LG Twins swept a doubleheader from them on Saturday, but the Heroes would finally answer this afternoon in Seoul. The Heroes offense started the scoring in the second inning. Dong-Won Park led-off the second and blasted a Woo-Chan Cha change-up out to left field for a solo homer. This put the Heroes on the board, but they weren’t done yet. Hye-Sung Kim walked and Ji-Young Lee singled to right. With two outs, Ha-Seong Kim lined a run-scoring single to center to put Kiwoom up 2-0 after two frames. The Heroes got back to work in the fourth. Ji-Young Lee led-off with a walk and Joon-Tae Park bunted him over to second base. Keon-Chang Seo walked and Ha-Seong Kim drove in two runs with a double to left. The next batter, Jung-Hoo Lee plated Kim with a double to right and the Heroes extended their lead to five. Kiwoom kept adding on in the sixth. Keon-Chang Seo drilled a Geon-Wook Yeo offering out to right for a solo homer. Two batters later, Jung-Hoo Lee took a Yeo fastball out to right. The two solo blasts put the Heroes up 7-0 and Eric Jokisch did the rest. He threw six shutout innings and struck out three. The Heroes had one more rally left in them. Ji-Young Lee lined a two-out single to center and Sang-Kwon Byeon doubled. Keon-Chang Seo drove in a pair with a single to right and Kiwoom had a nine-run lead. The Heroes bullpen faltered a bit when Eric Jokisch left the game. Hyun-Soo Kim greeted Jae-Woong Kim with a double to start the seventh inning. Eun-Sung Chae hit a sacrifice fly to left and Yong-Yi Kim hit an RBI groundout to second to put the Twins on the board. The Twins kept inching closer in the eighth. Ju-Hyeon Jung doubled with one-out and went to third base when Dong-Hwan Choi threw a splitter in the dirt. Ji-Hwan Oh walked and Seung-Hyun Baek lined an RBI single to right. Chang-Gi Hang hit a sacrifice fly, which scored Oh and the Twins were within six runs after eight frames. The Twins wouldn’t go away in the ninth. Eun-Sung Chae led-off with a single and Yong-Yi Kim did the same. Jae-Wook Park knocked in a run with a single and the Twins were within five. The Heroes closer Sang-Woo Jo came on and retired Ji-Hwan Oh to end the game. This snapped a four-game losing streak for Kiwoom.
-Final Thoughts- Eric Jokisch was amazing for the Heroes today. He threw six shutout innings and allowed two hits with a walk and three strikeouts. He mixed in a low-90′s fastball with a change-up, and a curveball. Woo-Chan Cha had some good moments. He lasted just four innings and allowed five runs on nine hits with two walks and four strikeouts. The Heroes had four guys with three hits apiece (Keon-Chang Seo, Ha-Seong Kim, Jung-Hoo Lee, and Ji-Young Lee). Seo and Kim each drove in three runs. Byung-Ho Park went 1-for-4 with a single and two strikeouts. The next televised game will be the NC Dinos and the Doosan Bears on Tuesday morning. All ten teams are off on Monday’s.

This is a companion post to this list of vocabulary found in the song.
The romanization is not based only on the literal translation of the hangul characters; it is based on how the characters actually sound when put together. For example, while many sites romanize “아낀다” as “agginda,” the word should actually be pronounced as “akkinda,” so I’ve romanized it this way to make it easier to understand.

Slugger hoping to turn back clock in 2nd tour of duty with S. Korean club
Tumblr media
By Yoo Jee-ho
SEOUL, March 22 (Yonhap) — In his second tour of duty with the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) club Nexen Heroes, slugger Park Byung-ho says his goal is to once again post video game-like numbers across the board.
Park is back with the Heroes this year, after two seasons in the Minnesota Twins system. He won the KBO’s regular season MVP for the Heroes in 2012 and 2013, and led the league in both home runs and RBIs every year from 2012 to 2015. In 2014 and 2015, Park launched 52 and 53 home runs, respectively, becoming the first KBO player ever to post back-to-back 50-homer seasons. In 2015, Park also set a single season record with 146 RBIs.
But Park never was able to match those stats with the Twins and spent the entire 2017 season in Triple-A Rochester before deciding to take his talent back to South Korea.
Tumblr media

Prior to the KBO’s annual media day Thursday, Park said he will try to turn back the clock this year.
“My goal right now is to play the same way I did for this club before I left for America,” Park said. “I think I did a pretty good job in the heart of the order. Even though two years have gone past, I would love to have similar performances for our fans. I want to be able to drive in a lot of runs and help the club win ball games.”
In Park’s absence, the Heroes have moved out of the hitter-friendly Mokdong Stadium in Seoul into a larger Gocheok Sky Dome, also in the nation’s capital. They have also gone from the league’s best home run-hitting club to being among the leaders in doubles and triples.
Park said playing at the dome certainly felt different during the preseason, both at the plate and on the field, but he should be able to make adjustments.
“I am really just focusing on myself and on my own game,” Park said. “I have high expectations for myself.”
Park will be part of what should be a lethal lineup. Setting the table for Park will be the 2017 Rookie of the Year Lee Jung-hoo and 2014 MVP Seo Geon-chang, both speedy hitters who can put the ball in play with shocking ease. Outfielder Michael Choice, former big leaguer who belted 17 home runs in just 46 games last year, will bat third, right in front of Park, and shortstop Kim Ha-seong, who has averaged 21 homers over the past three years, will bat fifth.
Park was especially effusive of Lee and Kim.

“Though I’ve never played with Lee Jung-hoo, his numbers speak for themselves,” Park said. “If he can match those stats this year, it will help our club a great deal. He’s going to be leading the way for this team for a long time.”
As for the shortstop, Park said: “Kim Ha-seong has done a great job batting in the heart of the lineup and playing excellent defense at his position. He’s been the pillar of this team after some veteran guys left the team.”
And Park said the departure of those older players during his absence has clearly changed the dynamics of the club.
“We may be short on experience as a team, but I think it’s going to allow young players to step into the void and mature,” Park said. “We’re going to try to pick up each other throughout the season.”

This is a companion post to this list of vocabulary found in the song.
The romanization is not based only on the literal translation of the hangul characters; it is based on how the characters actually sound when put together. For example, while many sites romanize “이렇게” as “ireohge,” the word should actually be pronounced as “ireoke,” so I’ve romanized it this way to make it easier to understand.

Returning big leaguers among key players to watch in new baseball season
Tumblr media
By Yoo Jee-ho
SEOUL, March 22 (Yonhap) — Not one, not two, but three South Koreans who once plied their trade in the majors have come home for the new Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) season, hoping to bring their respective clubs to the promised land.
Park Byung-ho of the Nexen Heroes, Kim Hyun-soo of the LG Twins and Hwang Jae-gyun of the KT Wiz will be among the players to watch during the 2018 season, which begins on Saturday with all 10 clubs in action.
After two seasons in the Minnesota Twins system, Park is back with the Heroes, for whom he won the regular season MVP in 2012 and 2013. He led the KBO in both home runs and RBIs every year from 2012 to 2015. In 2014 and 2015, Park launched 52 and 53 home runs, becoming the first player in the league to go deep at least 50 times in consecutive seasons.

In the United States, he never showed the same power stroke that made him one of the most feared sluggers here. He played in 62 major league games in 2016, hitting .191 with 12 home runs and 24 RBIs. He was sent down to Triple-A Rochester in midseason and never returned to the majors. Park was removed from the Twins’ 40-man roster early last year and spent the entire season in Triple-A, batting .253 with 14 home runs and 60 RBIs in 111 games.
Though he had two years remaining on his four-year, US$12 million contract, Park asked to be released from the deal and signed with the Heroes.
And the team will need Park, 31, to be the bopper that he was a few years back. The Heroes led the KBO in runs and home runs in Park’s last season before his departure, but suffered significant drops in both categories in his absence, which also coincided with a move from hitter-friendly Mokdong Stadium to more cavernous Gocheok Sky Dome.
Park will be surrounded by other capable hitters, including former big leaguer Michael Choice, 2014 KBO MVP Seo Geon-chang and the 2017 Rookie of the Year Lee Jung-hoo, in what should be a dangerous Heroes lineup.
The Twins will need even more help on offense than the Heroes, who still finished third in runs last year. The Twins posted the best ERA in the league in 2017 but still missed the playoffs because of their maddening inability to score runs. They were one of just two teams to fail to score at least 700 runs in the 144-game season last year.
And enter Kim, one of the KBO’s best contact hitters, who has also shown some pop in the past seasons.
Tumblr media

Before signing with the Baltimore Orioles in 2015, Kim spent 10 seasons with the Doosan Bears — who share Seoul’s Jamsil Stadium with the LG Twins — and he had a .318 lifetime batting average, at the time the second-highest mark among active players with at least 3,000 plate appearances. He earned the moniker “Hitting Machine.”
In 1,131 games, Kim also had a career on-base percentage of .406, with 597 walks against 501 strikeouts.
Kim put up outstanding numbers in his most recent KBO season in 2015, with career-highs of 28 home runs, 121 RBIs, 103 runs scored and 101 walks.
Much like Park, Kim was unable to duplicate his KBO production in his short major league career, which was split between the Orioles and the Philadelphia Phillies.
He overcame a slow start in his rookie year with the Orioles in 2016 and ended up with a .302 batting average and a .382 on-base percentage in 95 games.
But in 2017, Kim was an odd-man out in the crowded Orioles outfield and was traded to a rebuilding Phillies club in July, after batting just .232 with a home run and 10 RBIs in 56 games in Baltimore.
Kim, 30, was mostly limited to a bench role with the Phillies, and hit .230 in 40 games there.
After his two-year big league deal expired, Kim signed a four-year deal worth 11.5 billion won ($10.7 million) with the LG Twins in December.
At least Kim got to play in 191 big league games over two years. Hwang only appeared in 18 games with the San Francisco Giants last year, while spending the majority of the time in Triple-A Sacramento.
Tumblr media
In this file photo from March 13, 2018, Hwang Jae-gyun of the KT Wiz (C) is congratulated by teammates after scoring a run in a Korea Baseball Organization preseason game against the Samsung Lions at KT Wiz Park in Suwon, 45 kilometers south of Seoul. (Yonhap)
Those 18 games came in two stints. Hwang opened the 2017 season in the minors, and after getting called up on June 28, he homered in his very first big league game. But he ended up batting just .167 in 13 games and got sent down to Triple-A.
He was brought back up later but did little to justify his place in the lineup. He finished with a .154 batting average with a home run and five RBIs.
In Triple-A, Hwang batted .285 with 10 home runs and 55 RBIs in 98 games.
Hwang, 30, played 10 seasons in the KBO before leaving and enjoyed his best year in 2016 with the Lotte Giants. He had a .335/.394/.570 line, 27 home runs and 113 RBIs — all career highs. He also cut down on his strikeouts, from 122 in 2015 to 66 in 2016. Hwang stole 25 bases, the fourth time he’s swiped at least 20 bags in a season.
The Wiz signed him to a four-year deal worth 8.8 billion won ($8.2 million), hoping he could spark what has been among the KBO’s least productive offenses in the past three years.
The Wiz ranked last in runs scored and second to last in home runs in 2017. The Wiz joined the KBO in 2015 and have finished last in each of their first three seasons, winning 52, 53 and 50 games out of 144 games each.
The Heroes, the Twins and the Wiz all missed the playoffs in 2017. The Wiz may still be a long shot, but the Heroes and the Twins could duke it out for one of the last postseason berths come September.
One other player who didn’t play in the KBO last year will bear watching in 2018: SK Wyverns’ left-hander Kim Kwang-hyun.
Kim missed the entire last season after undergoing surgery to repair damage in his left elbow on Jan. 5, 2017. Kim was 11-8 with a 3.88 ERA in 2016 but was limited to 137 innings as he was bothered by lingering elbow pain all season.
He has looked sharp in preseason, as he held opponents to two earned runs over eight innings, with eight strikeouts against two walks.
Kim, 29, will try to recapture the form that once made him one of the KBO’s best starters. He was voted the regular season MVP in 2008 after leading the league with 16 wins and 150 strikeouts while finishing second with a 2.39 ERA.
Kim won his first ERA title the next year with a 2.37 mark. He ranked second in the category in 2010 and again in 2014. In 2010, Kim was first in wins (17), first in innings pitched (193 2/3) and second in strikeouts (183).
A series of injuries starting in the 2011 season threatened to derail a once-promising career as Kim failed to keep his ERA below 4.00 from 2011 to 2013.
The left-hander bounced back in 2014 with a 13-9 record and a 3.42 ERA in 173 2/3 innings, his most in four seasons. After that year, Kim was posted for interested major league clubs, but his contract negotiations with the San Diego Padres fell through.
Kim remained with the Wyverns and went 25-14 over the next two seasons before sitting out 2017 with the elbow injury. He will now try to turn back the clock and help the Wyverns reach their second straight postseason.

(Yonhap Interview) Hard-hitting teammates put smile on face of American right-hander
Tumblr media
By Yoo Jee-ho
SEOUL, March 20 (Yonhap) — The lineup for the Nexen Heroes is so strong that it could make opposing pitchers cry in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO).
But for the Heroes starting pitcher Jake Brigham, the mere thought of enjoying the run support brings a smile to his face.
“Every time I think about it, I smile,” Brigham told Yonhap News Agency on Tuesday at Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul, before the Heroes hosted the LG Twins in a preseason game. “It’s really exciting. We’re going to be a threat.”
The lineup Brigham was talking about welcomed back slugging first baseman Park Byung-ho, a two-time regular season MVP and a four-time home run king. After belting out 52 homers in 2014 and 53 in 2015, Park signed with the Minnesota Twins. He mostly toiled in the minors before rejoining his former team.
Tumblr media
In this file photo taken Sept. 17, 2017, Jake Brigham of the Nexen Heroes throws a pitch against the NC Dinos during a Korea Baseball Organization regular season game at Masan Stadium in Changwon, 400 kilometers southeast of Seoul. (Yonhap)
Park will be hitting behind the reigning Rookie of the Year Lee Jung-hoo, who set freshman records with 179 hits and 111 runs scored. Also setting the table will be Seo Geon-chang, who has a career batting average of .316 and on-base percentage of .392.
Should Park bat cleanup as expected, he will be surrounded by a couple of other boppers: Kim Ha-seong, who has averaged 21 home runs over the past three seasons, and Michael Choice, who launched 17 home runs in just 46 games in 2017 as a midseason arrival.
The Heroes used to be the biggest home run-hitting club in the KBO with Park and shortstop Kang Jung-ho in the fold. But following their departures to the U.S. and the move from the hitter-friendly Mokdong Stadium to the cavernous Gocheok Sky Dome, the Heroes have ranked in the lower half of the league in the long ball department in the past two years.
But they have remained among the league leaders in doubles and triples over the same span. And if they can add some homers to the equation, Brigham would be more than pleased.
“Our offense speaks for itself,” Brigham said. “The names alone in the lineup … everybody knows they can hit.”
But the American right-hander also understands he has to take care of business at his own end. After arriving in the KBO in May last year, Brigham went 10-6 in 24 starts with a 4.38 ERA.
“I made more than 20 starts, and I got a feel for the league and feel for the guys,” he said. “I am excited to see what the possibilities are. I have very high expectations for myself.”
Brigham has made one preseason start, against the Hanwha Eagles last Wednesday. He allowed five earned runs on five hits in five innings. Four of those runs came in the fifth inning, and Brigham said he pitched better than the final line showed.
“I just got fatigued in the last inning, which is normal for spring training,” he said. “I am building up my stamina and strength. I feel like I am in a really good spot right now.”
As good as Nexen’s hitters are, Brigham also got to see firsthand how dangerous KBO hitters can be. He served up 17 homers in 144 innings, a number he’d like to see fall this year.
Tumblr media
In this file photo taken July 25, 2017, Jake Brigham of the Nexen Heroes (No. 8) is greeted by teammates after completing the seventh inning of a Korea Baseball Organization regular season game against the LG Twins at Jamsil Stadium in Seoul. (Yonhap)
“The hitters are really good here. But baseball is baseball. If you make good pitches, you’ll get good hitters out,” he said. “If I can focus on myself and focus on making my pitches when I need to make them, I’ll be successful.”
Brigham said he has also benefited from having a U.S.-born pitching coach, Brandon Knight, by his side. Before becoming the Heroes’ coach, Knight pitched six years in the KBO, the last four for the Heroes.
“He can communicate to me really well the differences and help me make adjustments a lot faster,” Brigham said. “It’s nice having his knowledge and experience, for sure. I am sitting next to him all the time. He’s faced a lot of these hitters. He and I are very similar pitchers. He tells me, ‘This is how I got this guy out, and this is what you need to do or think about.'”
Spring is the time when hope springs eternal for baseball teams, and Brigham was particularly effusive about his team’s chances this year. The Heroes missed the postseason — open to the top four teams with the fifth-place team getting the wild card — in 2017, the first time they missed out on the big dance since 2012. But Brigham believes they’ll be back in 2018.
“We’re going to be in the top three. Our offense, our pitching … we have so much more this year than we did last year,” he said. “And we were good last year. The last month of the season, we ran into some bad string of games and nothing was clicking. I think we’re going to be one of the teams to beat this year.”
