re: the new senna trailer... does anyone else find the stylized lighter visor screens in motorsport movies to come across as kind of cheap? i know that it has an intended emotional purpose but i've always found the full blackout to be more hard-hitting.

eyes are such an easy way to portray emotion + humanity. the darkened visor seems to draw that final curtain between the driver and the car: as the camera switches to a helmet cam in the final stretch of a pole lap or as they cross the finish line, there's nothing to remind us that this a person inside the cockpit. it's one being. purely machine. at the end of the day, i think that's what pieces of media like rush (2013) and senna (2024) are trying to communicate... so a directorial choice here to sever that connection feels wrong.

moreover, a darkened visor forces the audience to look elsewhere for that shred of humanity. have faith in the audience!! we can pick up on the cracks in their voices, the movement of their hands, the little moments in their driving as they pull into parc ferme, overwhelm with emotion. feeling does not necessarily have to come from a physical portrayal!

#not to go completely fucking feral over this im just kinda.. thinking #but less in terms of film and more in terms of f1... a darkened visor always feels like. one final grasp of anonymity for the drivers too?#in a world where their lives are on display everywhere else... they get this to themselves #f1 #senna #netflix #oscar piastri #max verstappen #ferrari #charles leclerc
