Eurovision Fact #491:
Song writer Jimmy "Joker" Thörnfeldt has co-written a total of five Eurovision songs. In 2021, he was part of the writing team for Cyprus' 'El Diablo,' San Marino's 'Adrenalina,' and Sweden's 'Voices.' The songs placed 16th, 22nd, and 14th in the Grand Final, respectively.
In 2023, Thörnfeldt took part in writing once again for Cyprus, with the song 'Break a Broken Heart,' and Sweden, with 'Tattoo.' Cyprus placed 12th, while Sweden won the contest.

Favorite Song From Each Country! Part 30/37: San Marino!
Here we have the smallest participating country. While they can't beat Monaco's winning record because it's bigger (according to ESC Stroopwafel, Monaco is the smallest country to win Eurovision in 1971, and the record can only be broken if the Vatican City enters and wins which...highly unlikely), it keeps the microstate spirit alive with a variety of songs and an...interesting national final from what I've heard. Not to mention they have three artists that have taken up the bulk of participations with great songs from each!
Favorite Entry: Eurovision fans are broken up into three groups when it comes to San Marino: The Valentina Monetta fans, The Serhat fans, and the Senhit fans! And while I give a lot of love for 2015, this time, I want to give some love to what possibly is my 2nd favorite Eurovision Year: 2021. I felt the actual winner was worthy (it ranked 2nd), and my actual favorite was 3rd and took home the jury win. But it also gave a chance for me to meet San Marino in a way I never thought I would meet it...featuring Flo Rida. Yep. My favorite entry from San Marino is "Adrenalina" by Senhit from 2021...with...Flo Rida? I'm in the Senhit group now, I won't deny that, and this song explains it all. It's fun, and perfect for parties (and the reason I got into Eurovision...I have a lot of sad songs and wanted some happy ones. That's what happens when you get your Spotify up and running during the pandemic). So...yes. Robbed masterpiece. RANK: 22nd in 2021 Grand Final/PERSONAL RANK: 5th of 39 Countries
Thoughts on 2023 Entry: See, the problem I have with Piqued Jacks' "Like An Animal" was that the only version we had of it for a while was the live version. So, I wanted to like it because it sounded fun, but the production was not good because it was live...lives by nature don't sound as good as the studio version with few exceptions. And then, I got impatient with ranking and never listened to the studio version when it came out. Now that that's out of the way, it sounds fun (the studio version does sound a little better now that I'm listening to it), and the retro sound seems to match the vibe. Last place had to go to someone, but null points, no matter the song is too harsh. Maybe this one will grow on me later on...only time will tell...RANK: 16th in 2023 Semi-Final 2 (37th Overall)/Personal Rank: 36th of 37 Countries

My dad and I just spent the past few days searching for Eurovision acts which felt like Planet of the Bass, specifically acts which felt like Biljana Electronica and DJ Crazy Times.
Why, you may ask?
Because of this specific tag @technotrousers left on the post:
…Unfortunately, our search for 13th-ranked songs proved fruitless, so we resigned ourselves to finding the acts separately.
We have come to a conclusion.
Senhit (San Marino, 2021) is our Biljana Electronica.
youtube
Our DJ Crazy Times? The rapper in Trenulețul (Moldova, 2022) whose name I'm not sure of because I'm terrible at identifying faces.
youtube
"Okay, but WHY?" you may ask, again.
That, my dear reader, is between me, my dad, and our autism.
also please go listen to my dad's favourite entry from this year (Duje) and give it the respect it deserves.

Eurovision Fact #238:
During rehearsals and non-televised performances for the 2021 contest, there were quite a few technical issues.
Maltese, Ukrainian, and Romanian contestants had issues with their ear pieces that made the performers sound very off-tempo with their songs. This lead to each of the performers getting the opportunity to sing their songs a second time.
On the more serious side of things, Sammarinese representatives Senhit and Flo Rida we're put in physical danger as a result of a technical malfunction with their set. The duo performed on a rotating platform which failed to stop at the appropriate time, forcing Senhit to jump off of it.
San Marino RTV complained heavily about this as the jury performance was heavily flawed due to this malfunction. Jury members were not aware of the incident as they voted. Executive Supervisor Martin Österdahl assured the delegation that everything in their power would be done to protect the Sammarinese performers. Still, San Marino RTV gave their performers the opportunity to withdraw out of serious concerns for physical safety. The performers did not take this offer, however, and went on to perform in the live show.

I'm working on a small ESC project atm for which I'm looking at some national finals from this season and the 2021 season. And I noticed that there used to be a lot more internal selections two years ago compared to nowadays. Do you have any idea why that was the case/ why it changed? (I know it's a really random question but I thought you'd be the best person to ask :))
There are many countries that have their established national selections that are organised every year. UMK, Melodifestivalen, MGP, DMGP, Söngvakeppnin, Eesti Laul, Supernova, Festivali i Këngës, Festival da Canção just to name a few.
Then there are those countries that try different selection methods every few years, depending on the participating broadcaster, their financial situation and if there are any established artists showing interest to be selected internally. Some examples of those are Netherlands, Belgium (with two broadcasters), Moldova, Spain, San Marino, France, Malta, Georgia, Australia and Israel. Sometimes they organise a full national final, sometimes they choose just the artist via a talent show (Malta's X Factor 2019 & 2022, Georgian Idol 2019 & 2020), and sometimes they make an internal selection.
In 2022 TRM was planning to hold a full national selection but cancelled it after the preliminary round when it became clear there was no competition for Trenulețul. San Marino's 1in360 was scrapped after only one year letting Senhit & Flo Rida to represent the country and then Una voce per San Marino was founded in 2022. Israel, Slovenia and France also got big names with Noa, Joker Out and La Zarra so organising a NF would have been a waste of everyone's time and money, and so forth. This leads to the number of national selections changing from year to year, and I must admit that I haven't been invested in the subject enough to notice any strong trends.
2021 national final season is very exceptional since it was strongly effected by the COVID-19 pandemic. As the 2020 contest got cancelled, a total of 24 countries decided to send their representative again the next year, and that lead to one-year hiatus for many established national selections. Most of those then returned again in 2022 👇
Czechia: Benny Cristo won Eurovision Song CZ 2020, was internally selected in 2021, in 2022 they had national selection ESCZ 2022 Iceland: Daði & Gagnamagnið won Söngvakeppnin 2020, were internally selected for 2021, Söngvakeppnin returned in 2022
Serbia: Hurricane won Beovizija 2020, were internally selected for 2021, in 2022 they had national selection Pesma za Evroviziju '22
Latvia: Samanta Tina won Supernova 2020, was internally selected for 2021, Supernova returned in 2022
Slovenia: Ana Soklič won EMA 2020, was internally selected for 2021, EMA returned in 2022
Australia: Montaigne won Eurovision - Australia Decides 2020, was internally selected for 2021, Australia Decides returned in 2022
Israel: Eden Alene won Rising Star 2020, was internally selected for 2021, in 2022 The X Factor Israel was used as the national selection
Romania: Roxen's entry was selected via Selecția Națională 2020, she was internally selected for 2021 as was her song, and Selecția Națională returned in 2022
Ukraine: Go_A won Vidbir 2020, was internally selected for 2021, Vidbir returned in 2022
Malta: Destiny was chosen via The X Factor 2020, internally selected for 2021, and in 2022 Malta Eurovision Song Contest was used as the national selection

Who’s that? It’s San Marino’s Piqued Jacks with their song ‘Like An Animal’!🇸🇲🐅
L’pool, welcome the jacks: E-King, HolyHargot, littleladle, Magic-o; - aka Piqued Jacks. Historically, San Marino hasn’t been very successful in Eurovision since it joined the contest in 2008, however, the country is looking optimistic to this year’s contest as very charismatic yet down-to-earth Piqued Jacks are about to hit the stage with ‘Like an Animal’.
Having survived a national selection consisting of 4 semi-finals, a 1-second chance and 1 grand final, the guys are already winners! ‘Like an Animal’ feels like a gust of fresh air for San Marino, a country that rarely gets out of Senit-Serhat-Senhit-Valentina Monetta loop!
