The fourth grand Capcom Town election recently ran a poll that asked players “which of the following is Capcom’s famous quote?” There were five options to choose from, and included “objection,” “itchy, tasty,” “so tasty,” “let’s party,” and “tiun tiun (game over).” The voting period lasted from August 21, 2023 to September 4, 2023. On September 29, the results were revealed. The “objection” line from Capcom’s Ace Attorney series was voted the most famous quote. In celebration, official wallpapers of Capcom characters like Mega Man saying “objection” in the classic pointing pose were released on the Capcom Town official website and social media account. You can download all of them in their highest quality off of the official website.
In total, there are four different illustrations that were created to be made into official wallpapers. PC, iOS, and Android versions of the wallpapers are available. The PC wallpaper dimensions are 1920 x 1080, while the iOS and Android wallpapers are 1125 x 2436 and 1080 x 1920, respectively.
Here’s a closer look at how the four pieces looked. The featured Capcom characters in the “objection” wallpapers include Mega Man, a hunter from Monster Hunter, a zombie from Resident Evil, and Masamune Date from Sengoku Basara.
Capcom also shared concept art for these designs. In the case of the Monster Hunter character, the arm position was originally different. In the case of the zombie, an initial pose had it showing its back instead.

The Round 5 poll on the official site asked people to share if they are a cat person or dog person.

Tag game! What are you top 10 fandoms of all time? Name them and then tag ten more people. Feel free to write as much or as little about why you like them!
Tagged by @supreme-sauteer~ These are in no particular order and I ended rambling a lil too long LOL.
1. Kuroko no Basuke
Jk, ofc knb has to be first! It's been almost 10 years since I got into it and it's just the gift that keeps on giving. It's one of my comfort shows and it's gotten me through a lot tbh. Special shoutout to Kise, my baby who will forever be one of my favorite characters in media, and Kasamatsu, who I love with my entire being. Kaijou deserves better!!
2. Pokemon
My original hyperfixation before I even knew what that was, LOL. Pokemon has been there for me for as long as I can remember, and I don't think anything will ever quite replicate the feeling of home I get from this franchise, whether it's the games or merch or the show. I will def be there when gen 5028373 comes out, still playing the newest Pokemon game on the newest console no matter how old I am.
3. Xenoblade Chronicles
A newer fandom but one I fell into HARD. XC3 actually altered my brain chemistry and is probably my favorite game ever. My journey through the Xenoblade trilogy was magical and I can't get over how well the characters and stories are written, on top of having pretty fun gameplay. I'm super excited to finally check out XCX in March too!
4. TMNT 2003
Another childhood fave and another comfort show. These boys genuinely feel like family to me, they're just so cozy. I'm honestly shocked how well the show holds up even today; the writing is too good! It's criminal how slept on this version of the turtles is compared to others and I will die on this hill.
5. Akatsuki no Yona
The other day I realized I've been reading this manga for ten years which really made me have a belated quarter life crisis LOL. I migrated over from the anime, but man, it's SO SAD that they haven't animated the arcs after bc I love Yona (and everyone else's) growth through the series. I'm really anticipating how the series ends! Last chapter ripped out my heart thx.
6. Love Live!
I haven't kept up with Love Live and I was introduced to it through LLSIF (RIP) but I still listen to so many of the Muse/Aqours songs to this day! Kotori is incredibly special to me in particular bc I relate to her and I'll always smile when I see her pop up. Also I sometimes use the cards for fashion inspo bc their fits are too cute!
7. Rurouni Kenshin
I haven't felt comfortable following new RuroKen stuff considering everything, and tbh I don't think I'll ever be able to even reread/rewatch it bc it's forever tainted in my mind. But I can't deny how big of an impact it (esp Sano) had on me in my early teens, so here it is!
8. Sengoku BASARA
Tbh I'm not really in the fandom anymore, but I met SO MANY of my mutuals who I'm still friends with today through it, so it'll always hold a special place in my heart <3 Those were some wild and fun times LMAO.
9. Ys
Still making my way through all the older Ys games, but Ys 8 will forever be a legendary game imo and it has one of my fave OSTs of all time. Ys 9 and esp Ys 10 were also awesome! I finished Ys 10 a couple weeks ago and I'm still having withdrawals lol.
10. EXO
Alright this one is kinda eh bc I never got super into fandom stuff, but it's been such a crazy ride watching them from debut to now! Jongin esp is one of my favorite humans on the planet and as cheesy as it is, his words helped me tackle some of my insecurities growing up. I'll always be an erigom and an EXO-L <3
#Whew a real post for the first time in ages lol#Thanks for the tag hax!! Anyone can steal this from me if they want hehe

1/13/2024. Yesterday, unboxed Nendoroid Aqua. And though there was an empty spot in my display boxes for 1 more Nendoroid, i decided to rearrange multiple cases instead.
I've been meaning to rearrange my Michaels display cases to better reflect my updated favorite figures. Moved Kill la Kill Nendoroids to their own display case (with Lina and Catarina).
Moved all my unboxed Kingdom Hearts Nendoroids so far, from my display cabinet, to a display case. I realized that after i unbox Axel and Kairi, I'll have 10 Kingdom Hearts Nendoroids, so they probably should get thir own display case. After unboxing Aqua, there's no more room on my current KingdomHearts shelf" in my display cabinet. But these Michaels display cases can hold 10 Nendoroids, so my Kingdom Hearts Nendoroids are sharing with my Sengoku Basara Nendoroids. DateSana still my favorite Nendoroids, and my Michaels display cases are supposed to hold my favorites. I love that Kingdom Hearts has Nendoroids now, but they're not actually my favorite Nendoroids. But my Michaels display cases, usually for my favorites, are the only cases with that much space for 10 Nendoroids, all from tge same series.
Left empty spots for Nendoroids Axel and Kairi, that have been waiting in my room to be unboxed.
I was about to move my Spy x Family Nendoroids to my thrift store display cabinet, but i decided to leave them in their current display case, becase there's an empty spot beside Loid, that would fit Nendoroid Bond, after i preorder him.
Finally reunited my Homura Nendoroids with my Nendoroids of Devil Homura and Ultimate Madoka. I would have liked for all my Madoka Magica Nendoroids to stay in or near my Michaels display cases, since those cases' positions in my room are the most visible, which is why they're for my favorites. But they just don't all fit there.
Gave Devil Homura a boost/display riser. Her original support arm broke a long time ago, so she's not actually as high as ahe shouid be. Which wasnt a problem before. But now i need her above my 2 other Homura Nendoroids, to stay visible.
After i broke up my group of Nendoroid sorcerers, to convert their display case to instead dedicate to Kill la Kill: Lina Inverse and Catarina Claes stayed with KLK, Ernesti Echevalier moved to the empty spot beside Donatello, and Izetta moved to my new Madoka Magika display box so she could stay visible. Izetts is very pretty. I bought her Nendoroid before even getting halfway thru her anime series.
Since my thrift store display cabinet is the most easily accessible, i tried to put my most frequently photographed Nendoroids on the shelf that used to be for my Kingdom Hearts Nendoroids. It ended up being mostly Iyashikei and characters i identify with: Frozen, Kimi ni Todoke, Natsume Yuujinchou, Nichijou.
I almost moved my Kirby Nendoroids. Right now, they have their own display case, with extra unused space. So my Kirby Nendoroids almost went to help fill my cabinet's former Kingdom Hearts shelf. But then i remembered that i have Nendoroids Waddle Dee and Meta Knight, and after i unbox them, they should to into the empty space in the Kirby display case. So i moved my Kirbys back. They're keeping their own display case.

* KING OF THE SEAS — !!
An independent and selective roleplay blog featuring Sengoku Basara's Chōsokabe Motochika. Re-Est. 12 / 23, Loved & Cherished by Volpe! ♥
!! — PROCEED BELOW FOR MORE INFORMATION — !! Thank you! xoxo
✘ This blog is selective and mutual exclusive. However! As long as you keep your posts trimmed, don’t spam OOC content, have basic information about your muse, and I believe our muses also have a decent chance with connecting, then there’s a good chance I’ll follow you back. I absolutely love original characters and I’m welcome to most fandom muses, so, there's no need to be shy here. ✘ Practice patience with me. I ask that you keep in mind that I’m a busy little bee, and that I also have many other muses that I write for. Though it usually takes me a while to get through replies, know that it’s just a matter of life simply getting in the way. ✘ I will be extremely selective in regards to shipping. I value chemistry involved with any potential romantic interest. Still, if that’s a matter you’d like to discuss in the future after we’ve had some time for our muses to interact, remember that I'm very open to exploring the possibilities. I love a good slow burn and lots of development!
✘ Themes of sexual nature will also appear here from time to time, whether in the form of headcanons or actual threads and so forth. I’m also very open to writing smut, as long as the right circumstances fall into place between our muses. Anything that may contain such themes will be tagged as #not sfw.
And I think that about does it for my rules! A little about myself: I'm Volpe, 27, and I'm a very tired lady. Have questions, want to plot, or simply wish to chat? You’re more than welcome to shoot me a message!\(^▽^)

So... there's a slight hole in my heart now that I've finished my Zoids: New Century Zero rewatch.
Man, it was so much fun! Overall, the pacing was excellent — but being the big tournament fan that I am, I definitely would've welcomed more episodes being dedicated to the Royal Cup. I was a bit baffled that it all got wrapped up in just three eps... it would have been a great opportunity to introduce another solid team rather than focusing purely on the four rivals we saw (the Lightning Team, the Champ Team, Naomi's team and the Fuzzy Pandas Zaber Fangs). However, to dedicate another ep to the Royal Cup, we would have had to drop a filler and the only real contender I can think of is the Sebastian-has-a-crush episode. I would be slightly reluctant to drop it since it gave us some sweet moments where Bit helped out Harry and the gang so it was sorta cute in its own way.
Still, some of the Backdraft's motivations were a bit whacky and needed more exploration. There doesn't seem to be much correlation between shooting down the judges' satellites and taking over the Zoid Battles Commission. And Altile being ready to kill a 10-year-old in order to undermine a colleague was definitely a theme that could've used some expansion! Nevertheless, the tension was effectively built up all the way through and seeing Bit win the final battle with the original Liger Zero was lovely.
Though the poor Panzer unit only got two outings!!
It was bizarre/incredible to hear so many people from the Gundam Wing dub! Picking up on Duo's voice was definitely a bit of a shock, lol. And man, all the DBZ voices... we always had a huge laugh in our household about Harry and the Great Saiyaman having a voice actor in common.
/looks up Scott McNeil
WHAT? He voiced Stoeller too?!? Oh wow oh wow —
I think the women in Zoids were all great: Leena was obnoxious, brash, loud and trigger happy (big heart emoji); Naomi was cool, calm and collected; Mary Champ was materialistic, refined and caring; the Tasker sisters had incredible battling skills (though very little development, sadly); Pierce was cool; Fuma was super cool and Sarah was ambitious and motherly. I loved that they all had very different roles and character motivations. And man, even the comic relief ladies were sweet — like the poor Royal Cup reporter and the woman in the parts shop who was rightfully terrified when Bit couldn't find the order form, lol. They all had autonomy and a part to play... and they all had a very deep appreciation for Zoids.
(Some sports anime could take note.)
And, once again, there's a tenuous link between a series I love and Sengoku BASARA. I came to know of Fuuma Kotarou through Basara — and, given that the Fuma team were super stealthy and could suddenly appear like ninja when Altile summoned them, I'm assuming the leader, Fuma, was based on the historical figure. So that was fun!
I'm wondering if what I watched was the HD version, after all? The episodes included scenes that hadn't made it to the dub — there were only about 4 or 5 in total, and with the exception of the scene where Laon was in a bar and then approached by the Backdraft Group, the cut scenes didn't really add anything.
It's a shame that Zoids: New Century Zero didn't get a second season because wow, I definitely could spend more time with these wonderful characters. At the same time, the whole series was incredibly satisfying to watch, so I'm not too torn up, I suppose.
But scenes I'd like to see!
- Bit taking a break, as promised, and returning in Episode 3 or 4 to save the day and join the series properly
- Top-notch warriors in S Class; the Blitz Team losing a few battles
- A new armour for the Liger Zero
- More exploration of Organoid systems
- Definitely some more stuff with Vega, Stoeller and the other cool folk from the series... I think the Lightning Team would make it to S Class, but I'm not sure about Naomi
- More battles being won by Leena, Brad or Jamie — one thing that disappointed me in Zoids a little was that Bit was the deciding factor for too many battles
- A short tournament for Brad and Naomi to participate in, since they made that promise?
- Absolutely no change to Steve Toros; I LOVE HIM
- Please... cool new Zoids...
- Something cool to replace the Backdraft Group... or maybe Toros goes on a wild hunt to find another Ultimate X (in which case, we'd need a new character to pilot it).
I think that's it for now!

Transformers: Mosaic #328 - "Shogun"
Originally posted on January 12th, 2009
Story, Art - Iván Mas
deviantART | Seibertron | TFW2005 | BotTalk
wada sez: A Bludgeon-focused strip set in an alternate version of IDW's continuity—sort of along the lines of Evolutions. Mas offered his own commentary on the strip on his deviantART; I’ve mirrored it and some behind-the-scenes material below, along with an entirely separate strip in a similar vein written by Enric Farguell that was apparently rejected by the Mosaic editors on the basis that it wasn’t “sequential art”. I decided to reach out to my friend Sam to get an independent view on the strip’s cultural background:
Sam sez: So Sekigahara was one of the last big battles of the warring states period. The narrator is a Toyotomi loyalist, while the Tokugawa he is talking about is Ieyasu Tokugawa, who will win the battle, establish the Tokugawa shogunate and his territory of Edo will become capital and eventually modern day Tokyo. It’s basically standard tonal samurai stuff, all “my death brings honour to my family” and that. A bit orientalist in tone here for sure, but there’s an element of truth to be had. The thing is there’s an official Transformers thing from Japan that is exactly this—not exactly, in that Bludgeon isn’t there, but there was a Warring States/Transformers crossover thing during the Age of Extinction windup. [wada sez: Sam was thinking of a collaboration between TakaraTomy and a company that made actual armor/swords inspired by Sengoku period factions, and also wanted to mention that one time the protagonist of Sengoku Basara showed up on Q-Transformers.] The thing about Japan is that this is all happening 500 years ago so it’s about far out enough for this to be easily mined for fantasy stories. Lots of fiction about what if there were literally demons on both sides and such.
Well, I think it's one of the mosaics I've made that I like the most.
I think it is quite complete in many aspects, we have on the one hand a small historical study of documentation.
It is one of the most famous battles in the history of Japan, Sekigahara, which ended up deciding the Tokugawa Shogunate with Oda Nobunaga, for the next 300 years and which was one of the bloodiest in memory.
So... somehow I link what is the IDW transformers universe with real facts, as we know, in the IDW universe some important politicians or military leaders are under decepticon influence, in Infiltration, but... because they couldn't start said infiltration from Japan?
It could have been, and that is what I wanted to propose, so whoever was Shogun won this battle thanks to some decepticons infiltrating their ranks, commanded by a Bludgeon, something that seems obvious to me since its samurai-style design always amazes me. It seemed a bit unjustifiable.
However, the story is told by a general in the ranks of Toyotomi. Trying to follow the samurai spirit a bit, it follows that this samurai is going to die. I took this image from a statue in Japan and it served me very well both for its pose and its shape to convey what I wanted, also, we can say that... it is another nod to something existing.
I know that maybe it is a bit complicated to read, but I was interested, since the story is told by a guy, that the typography was more calligraphic, so to speak.
The last balloon surely costs more, the one in Bludgeon, but it is intentional, as you can see, its appearance is very unpleasant, and I wanted the test globe to convey the same thing, that it be dirty, illegible, aesthetically ugly, unpleasant, in order to help give the personality of Bludgeon, who by the way, already gives a clue about the Infiltration that we said before.
Even so, I think that on the mosaics page there are problems with the resolution, a pity.
If you look closely, my signature appears with Japanese characters at the bottom left, and the whole frame has a great job, the blood stains are evident why I have put them, and if we look at the page as it progresses, it acquires that reddish tone, giving to understand that the battle hardens.
Another detail is the Mosaic logo, which... if we look closely, I decided to put a "What if..." implying that it was a kind of separate universe. In addition, in the header, we have the signs of the two banners, if you search a bit, as a curiosity you will see that the one on the left is the Tokugawa sign, mixed with the decep symbol.
And a little more.... I did the page in pencil with gradients, it is a very grateful technique but somewhat slow and tiring, however, it turned out well.

[Written on Monday/15th. Feeling slightly better now, but the facts still hold true.]
(So...for the past few days, I have been browsing Netflix for...children's cartoon animation movies to (re-)watch.
Today, I came across something called..."Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank"?
(which, by the way, I thought was a comic/cartoon-adapted movie, but apparently it's an original one)
[This thing. Don't know what image to attach, so here is the thumbnail of the trailer.]
Like a mature adult, I decided to watch it.
And, like a definitely non-weeb (and because it's available, otherwise it would be very hard to find), I decided to watch it in Japanese.
The first voice I 100% recognised was Jimbo's: Tesshō Genda (玄田哲章) [Younger Toguro, Sengoku Basara's Takeda, City Hunter's Umibozu] (Samuel L Jackson in the original voice, by the way). Which...okay, I know Genda-san does dubs. He's the voice of Foghorn Leghorn, after all. His voice is very iconic, too. You can't miss it when he does a "battle cry" thingie (maybe it's because I first knew him as Toguro).
But the second one I kinda recognised was Ika Chu's (yes that's the character's name apparently), and I was like:
"Wait, is that Tomokazu Sugita (杉田智和)???" [Gintoki Sakata, Kyon, Escanor, Joseph Joestar and much more]
And I immediately thought: "No way, Sugita doesn't do dubs..."
"But I also cannot not recognise that voice, his voice is very iconic too (and I have known him for a considerable number of roles, starting from Gintoki)."
After the movie, I checked the (Japanese) Wikipedia page, and literally did Joseph's "Naisu!" pose:
It really is Tomokazu Sugita.
And, to add on Sugita's role as Joseph Joestar: Apparently Hank's voice is Yū Hayashi (林勇), who voices Smokey Brown.
Not gonna lie, I somehow found that very funny.
"NIGERUNDAYO, SMOKEY!!!!!"
There are also apparently other (JoJo) casts, like Tomokazu Seki (関智一) [Enrico Pucci] and Junichi Suwabe (諏訪部順一) [Leone Abbacchio/Younger D'Arby], who voice Chuck and Ichirou respectively. But I couldn't recognise them while I was watching (probably because they are using some silly voices, instead of the ones you hear shouting "Whitesnake!!!" or "Moody Blues!!!")
And of course, Tesshō Genda voices Impostor Captain Tennille/Dark Blue Moon from Stardust Crusaders...if you remember who that is.
(the "Onii-chan!" guy if that helps)
Also also, I may write another entry about this later on...but I would like to meet whoever decided to hire Akio fucking Ōtsuka (大塚明夫) [Wamuu, All For One, Uvogin, Saint Seiya's Hades] to voice Jimmy Crystal.)
[Shits and giggles end here. Much more personal stuff below.]
Maybe because I am still a student, I divide periods of my life into school years (instead of...you know, "real years").
Truth be told: This school year has been very bad for me.
Not because something bad happened (not something sudden and catastrophic), but because...nothing happened. I did nothing...outside school.
(Well, I had an internship interview during my very bad time in January, which was my first "job interview", and which was also my first unsuccessful "job interview").
And school is so super damn busy and stressful, that it is hard to do anything outside school.
I mentioned in my last...personal post, that I have been feeling mood swings. Some days are better (which are the days you see me liking and sharing posts, such as mid-February to early-March), and some days are absolutely bad (which are the days you don't see me at all).
Such as now. The reason why I am watching random stupid shit on Netflix is because, otherwise, I would be lying on my bed doing nothing. So I might as well be lying on my bed doing something. I can't sleep, because I have been sleeping too much already. I did try reading too, but I guess my mind is a bit too exhausted/overwhelmed to do that.
(I know I also should be spending at least some time socialising (a massive sorry to all my Discord server-mate seeing this), which is a "how to feel better" self-help tip I see in every single article. But whenever I am feeling bad, I just tend to...disappear. I know I should stop doing that, and I have been saying I will stop doing that. Sorry.)
Honestly, I shouldn't even be watching something on a Monday (it's my day off, but it's still a weekday, and I still have homework to do). I did go to school (to get out of home, at least), but I really had no energy to work today.
Okay, I actually have no energy nor interest to do...anything at all. I know it's waterfowl breeding season soon, and I haven't been to a park in...months. Which is definitely a sign that something is wrong with me.
This "on-and-off but constantly feeling bad on average" pattern reminds me of another past school year. A year I still dread and regret whenever I think about it.
Moreover, now that the Undertale cringe is one-year-old, I have successfully failed to create anything for a year.
Which is not ideal, and I have been saying this since last summer vacation. Because things have not been okay since then. My WIPs are becoming four years old.
I also didn't do any "active" stuff at all since school started, like gaming. My Brok the InvestiGator progress is still around 50%, so I have been dodging spoilers like mad. I tried to mod and play Skyrim a bit, but no big progress whatsoever (Vilja is still waiting for me to complete her quest). I know DD2 just dropped last month, but I haven't even bought it yet.
The only things I have done were "passive" things like watching shows/movies and reading fics. And sometimes even those stopped, when I am feeling really bad.
The reason why I am writing this is because "writing your feelings down" is another "how to feel better" self-help tip I see in every single article. I used to keep a diary where I did exactly this every day, but the habit sort of...faded away (during the aforementioned bad past school year, probably because I was too sad to write down how sad I was every day).
I don't have a cool/motivational ending to this, so I will just end it abruptly here.

Oneechanbara Origin
Look, I knew what this game was going in. I wasn’t expecting a fuckin masterpiece. I just wanted a fun, trashy game with big anime titties and a satisfying combat system. And still I was let down.
Credit where it’s due, the animation is actually quite good for all three characters - you can for sure tell that’s where all the effort went here. There’s a lot of really sick keyframing on all the combos, and the incredibly generous hitstop will nearly freezeframe you if you hit enough enemies, which is deeply satisfying if you trigger it on one of the cooler combo poses. Saki’s easily my favorite for this reason; all of her huge arcing launch attacks feel great to land after the huge windup.
Shame, then, that every character basically has three entire combos. Three. I know it’s unreasonable to expect full DMC levels of moveset variety, but this is bottom-of-the-barrel, Dynasty Warriors-ass, one square combo, one triangle combo, and one square into triangle combo stuff. Rough, man. The game tries to add a few systems on top of this to add depth to the gameplay, but they’re so incidental they don’t feel like they add any player expression.
The Cool Combinations are supposed to be this game’s signature system, I think; if you time the next hit in a combo just right, your character flashes a bit with Glowing Anime Power and the move will come out faster and charge your energy up a bit. It’s kind of reminiscent of the Exceed system on Nero’s Red Queen, except… way less impactful and not as cool lol. Your game has to be really damn good for me to even consider engaging with any system that requires me to memorize the timing of every single one of a character’s attacks - hell, DMC5 fucking rules and I still haven't taken the time to practice getting consistent exceeds - and if the system is even more finicky than usual due to the timing constantly changing due to the massive hitstun when fighting groups… I’m good, man.
The two tiered berserk system is kinda fun; aesthetically, I’m here for the big dumb Kill la Kill-lookin Baneful Blood forms. But between the fact that it triggers automatically and not on-command, and the fact that it’ll often run out almost immediately because it triggered right before you need to sprint down a sewer pipe for 30 seconds (a common occurrence in this game), it feels pretty half baked.
I will say, I was surprised and impressed by how good some of the boss fights are, though. The game’s enemies are largely either hapless potatoes or frustrating little bastards with poorly-telegraphed attack windups, and the larger zombie bosses follow those trends. But man, basically every fight against a sword-wielder turns into a mini-Sekiro fight. Suddenly you remember there’s a parry and a perfect dodge, and you really have to nail them and get the attack patterns down pat to make it through. While it doesn’t have anything like the posture bar, nailing the perfect dodge / parry builds your special meter real quick, so if you’re nailing every evade, the play pattern of most bosses essentially becomes a 100% uptime of your character either doing a flip or an iaido slash, which is fun as hell.
Oh, and my other big criticism of this game is that all the outfits are paid DLC. IMO if you’re making a game with this much Big PS2 Energy, it’s just way more thematically appropriate to have a bunch of stupid costumes to unlock in-game, to give the players a carrot to chase. Miss me with that paid shit.
Eh, I know this is how it goes with B games, I shouldn’t be expecting the world. I feel like lately I’m just used to finding gems in that space, so it’s a bummer to play something that’s about what you'd expect it to be. The search continues! Capcom give new Sengoku Basara pls 🥺

Dinner Time (Nanahime and Yoko)
The pirate queen, scourge of the seas! Feared by all! She challenged the gods and won! She crushed her enemies! She commanded a crew of the finest, the strongest, the bravest!
She stood at the helm of her mighty ship—terror of the seas! Now that none in Japan stood against her, there was no choice but to continue to new lands! Adventure awaits!
With a crouch, she prepared to leap from the helm into the seas—
“Yoko, get down from there! Preferably not by jumping!”
Yoko snapped back to reality, the little girl crouching down to see her mother’s slightly-agitated gaze.
“Y’know, we specifically told you you’re not allowed to jump from the roof after what happened last time.” Nana held up her arms as she drew closer. “C’mon, I’ll catch you. Just climb; it’s time for dinner.”
“Comin’!” Yoko turned around, beginning to climb down and letting go; Nana caught the six-year-old under the arms with a grunt.
“Geez, you’re gettin’ heavy....” she laughed a bit, setting her down and taking her hand. “Okay, let’s go before the food gets cold.”
“‘Kay!” Yoko fell into step beside her mother, humming a bit as they headed into their home. “Think daddy’ll be back tonight?”
“Mm...probably not. You know your dad; he could be another few days, another few weeks, or show up within an hour.”
“I wonder if he’ll bring me a neat shell again this time,” Yoko thought out loud, “I don’t mind if he doesn’t, though.”
“Just want ‘im home in one piece?”
“Mm-hmm. Then we can wrestle again.”
“Am I not a good enough wrestling partner anymore?”
“That’s not true!” Yoko immediately replied, flustered, “You’re still fun! I like to wrestle you!”
“I’m just teasin’, squirt.” She messed up her daughter’s hair a bit. The pair said hi to passing crew members and guards as they went, before finally, Nana used her free hand to slide open the door to where they would be dining: a large, square room with a single round table in the middle and three somewhat-flat cushions (though one of the regular occupants was currently away). Waiting at two of the seats were a hearty bowl of steamed white rice, and somewhat-neatly assorted fillets of fresh ocean fish—Nana had even cut off the tail fin of the fish and stuck it near the far right of Yoko’s rice, having given it a bit of a whale shape (never mind that whales weren’t fish).
“Dinner!” Yoko cheered, immediately sprinting to her spot and jumping onto the little cushion meant just for her; the cushion slid a bit, but snagged on the wood floor before it could send the girl careening across the room. Yoko immediately snatched up her chopsticks and went to pick up the tail fin and pop it in her mouth—
“Ah, don’t eat that part. That’s for decoration.”
“Oh. Okay!” Yoko set it aside, instead swiping up the rice bowl and digging in voraciously.
“Please don’t choke.” Nana sat down with a laugh and a sigh, beginning to eat her own portion of the meal. After a while of eating in silence, Yoko swallowed a mouthful of rice, taking a deep breath.
”Mommy, what kinda stuff do you do as daddy’s first mate?”
“Hm?” Nana had a fillet halfway in her mouth. Chewing and swallowing, she cleared her throat. “Well, lots of things.”
“Like what?”
“Let’s see...” she put her chopsticks to her lips as she thought for a moment. “I’m head of the household, officially, so I handle anything goin’ on around the house. I also handle inventory for your daddy’s ship; make sure the crew has enough food and supplies. Lotsa physical work, too, like helping with building and maintainin’ the fleet. Then there’s handlin’ relations with the clans your dad allied with—“
“Those are the days you gotta dress up nice, right?”
“Ugh, yeah. Anyway, there’s all that, and basically keepin’ your dad from doing anything stupid. ‘Bout a fifty percent success rate, there.”
“And you gotta make me little brothers so Daddy has heirs, right?”
Nana paused as she looked at her, then squinted. “You were supposed to be asleep when we were having that conversation.”
“I know how babies are made, mommy. You told me.” Yoko stuck her nose up, “Don’t be surprised.”
“Listen here, you...” Nana started, then snickered. “You’re gettin’ too old, too fast.”
Yoko let out a giggle, then went back to eating, while Nana watched for a moment.
Those big green eyes, full of curiosity. So familiar to her.
Sometimes, when Yoko looked up at her mother with those big green eyes, Nana could see Fukurou there, for one, fleeting moment.
How would you feel, seeing your daughter now, Fukurou? she thought.
“Mommy?” Yoko spoke up again. “You’re not eatin’.”
“Oh, you’re right. Whoops.” Nana popped another fillet in her mouth.
“It sucks Daddy’s not here to eat this with us.”
“He had plenty of food packed; I’m sure he’s fine.”
“But it’s not like when you make it fresh! Daddy’s missing out!”
“Look at you, worrying over your dad. He’d be so flattered. Complete turnaround from when you first met him.”
“Really? I can’t remember a time I didn’t like Daddy.”
“Ohhhh, there was a time when you didn’t like him at all. You were really young, though; I’m not surprised you don’t remember.”
“How old was I?” Yoko leaned in a bit, now at full attention.
“Mm....” she swallowed some rice. “...three? It wasn’t long after Mommy and all her friends decided to become pirates. I think I was working on something that required two hands, but you were being clingy and wanted me to hold you, so I was managing with one hand. The cap’n—your dad, as you now know him—came by, saw what I was doing and asked if I wanted him to hold you while I was finishing up. I told him it wasn’t a good idea because you got fussy with people you didn’t know, but he insisted it’d be fine. So, I decided, fine, I’d let him hold you for a few minutes. Well, no sooner do I pass you to him and he says hello, that you scream, ‘NO!’ and—“ she started to cackle, “You smacked him in the face as hard as your little hand could. Which, luckily, wasn’t very hard.”
“I hit him!?” Yoko sounded distraught. “I’d never hit daddy if we weren’t playing!”
“Well, he started laughing after that and just held onto you despite the fact you started squirming and flailing—I think he kinda saw you as a challenge. Did seem kinda disappointed at your reaction, though.”
“When did I start liking him?”
“I’d say about a month or so later. I was talking to him about something, and you just walked over, looked up at him and said, clear as day, ‘Aniki, up!’ and held up your arms. I swear, he must have been waiting to hear that, because he scooped you up immediately. Plus, scored him some points in my book, with how much he took to you after that.”
“Is that when you fell in love with him?”
“Mm....nah. I can’t really pinpoint a time that happened. That’s the thing about falling in love, kiddo; sometimes, it’s just kinda...there.”
Sometimes more than once. And with multiple people. But she doesn’t need the details.
After dinner was eaten, Yoko scurried off while Nana went to wash the dishes. As she entered the empty kitchen, she went over the dinner conversation in her head, and again, her mind went back to Fukurou.
“Hey, if it’s a girl, let’s name her Yoko, okay?”
“Yoko? Not against it, but why?”
“We can use the character for ‘ocean.’ We met on the beach. It fits, yeah?”
“Yeah...you’re right, it does! That’s actually pretty cute.”
She smiled a bit. Him and his symbolic names. Such a dork.
He was her former lover.
He was exuberance and life and adventure all rolled up into one. Never sat still, never stopped thinking of new things to do. Never stayed in the same place. Always found something to love about the places he went.
As she finished drying the dishes, though, she paused. A pang in her stomach, and it wasn’t the food doing it. With a sigh, she headed back to the quarters she shared with her husband, going to the closet where she kept her few belongings. Sliding it open, she pulled out a small leather pouch, opening it and dumping the contents into her palm—a round, amber stone on a leather string—the string was long since broken. Raising it to eye level, she turned it over in her hand, a frown crossing her features.
The kid’s doing fine. We all are.
She closed her fist around it, giving it a squeeze.
I promise, I’m okay.
She sat against the wall, staring across the room blankly for a while, still holding the stone in her hand.
She wasn’t aware how much time had passed, until Yoko opened the door again.
“Mommy, I’m going to bed! It’s story time!”
“Huh?” Nana snapped back to reality. “Oh...! Right. Sorry. Are you all set?”
“Mm-hmm.” Yoko nodded, lying completely.
“Hey.” Nana crouched in front of her. “Are you lyin’ to me?”
“...no.” Yoko looked away.
“You didn’t wash up!” She put her hands on her daughter’s cheeks. “You gotta wash up, kiddo! Or else you could get sick, and that would be,” she smushed her cheeks, taking a faux-sinister tone. “Sooooo baaaaaad.”
“Stoooop!” Yoko whined, pulling away. “I’ll go wash my face, fine!”
Nana laughed as Yoko scurried off, heading to her daughter’s room—the room was filled with odds and ends; various little “treasures” Yoko had picked up from playing with friends, going on “adventures” with her parents, or just wandering around. But displayed proudly on a small shelf were four seashells, each different shapes and colors—gifts given to her by her stepfather...her “daddy.”
“Here I am....” Yoko arrived moments later, crawling onto her futon.
“Alrighty, so what story do you want?”
“...actually...instead of a story...”
“Hm?”
“...can I ask you about my daddy? The daddy who made me?”
Nana felt her stomach flip as Yoko asked. “...you wanna know about your birth dad, huh?”
“You don’t gotta tell me everything if you don’t wanna, but....I at least wanna know what he was like.”
Nana didn’t know this feeling. It wasn’t dread. She knew Yoko would want to know more eventually. Fukurou didn’t live to see Yoko; didn’t get to watch her grow. And as those big green eyes stared back at Nana...
“...well....I can’t deny you that, huh?” Nana smiled a bit. “...okay.”
One day, Yoko would have to know what happened. But...at least for now, she could tell her who he was.
