ssa hotchner: chapter 2 - one week
TW: threats, language, talking abt abuse/what happened to y/n the night before, mild drinking
WC: 5,116
series masterlist
---------------------------------------------
you woke up to the bright sun peeking in through your window past the hills, shining brightly into your eyes. you sat up, and rubbed your eyes in attempt to wake yourself up even more. you looked over at your clock to see the tie was already half past 6 a.m.
you didn't have to go to work for the first time in what felt like forever. trudging out of bed, you made your way into your bathroom and started the hot water.
the cut on your face looks exponentially better than it did last night. the handprint's swelling on your face had gone down quite a bit, but the bruise on your arm was definitely still there.
you brushed your teeth while you waited on the water to warm up. once the shower was ready, you shed your clothes and hopped inside. you took your time, letting the events of last night try to sink into your mind.
after you finished up, you used a towel to dry your hair a bit and got dressed in some leggings and a large t-shirt. you figured you might as well be comfortable if you didn't have anything else to do.
going back into your living room you decided to read the note that was taped to your gate. you pulled the bin out, followed by the shoe box, followed by the note.
you've been receiving them for close to 7 years now, ever since that high profile case you did for the bau. honestly, there was no telling if the letters were from more than one person. they are all typed and printed out.
at first they were all 'thank yous' for putting away a serial killer, but then came the anniversary of him being in prison... and people got a bit angry. then, people who were grateful for you putting him away forgot about it, as they should since they have lives of their own, and all that was left were the people who were angry.
the people who would wish you were dead. the people who think you should be inside there with the other killers. the people who were upset about you putting their 'true love' away for good. those were the people you were scared of.
the people that knew your address.
the people that sent you death threats.
those were the terrifying ones. the ones that kept you up at night, looking out of your window, trying to see if anyone was truly out there. nobody ever was. logically, you knew that nobody was out there lurking.
but if you told big bro, he would go all fbi on the letters. he would try to figure out who sent them, and send them to jail themselves. you didn't know if they were truly a threat, so what's the point in poking the bear? if they got too terrible, you would tell him. maybe...
you son of a bitch. you should've been his last victim so you wouldn't be here and he would be. you're nothing but a manipulative little bitch.
you don't deserve anything you have handed to you.
go die, bastard.
you folded it back up and placed it in the box, the bin, then pushed it underneath the couch.
were you worried? of course. would you tell anyone? not yet. if your fear became unmanageable, you would let someone know.
the only problem with the notes is that there was no return address. you put up security cameras everywhere around your gate in hopes of catching the culprit(s) on video, but sadly they were able to hack into the cameras you had gotten.
you would check the video footage after you received a note or picture. the time stamp went from 8:54 to 9:03, meaning they probably hacked into it before they got there.
maybe garcia could find whoever hacked into it every night if you needed her to. surely she would be able to work her magic when necessary.
you went into your room to check your phone for any new messages.
a <3: what're you doing for lunch today? feel up to spending time together two days in a row? let me know whenever you can; there's no case today.
you: i don't have any plans at all today, i guess i'll just have to suffer through another lunch with you.
and... sent.
unknown number: hi, y/n. it's spencer. i just wanted to know how're you doing? is the cut on your face okay?
you: hey back genius :) i'm doing pretty well, all things considered. my face is looking much better than it was before i went to bed, thank you for asking.
send.
while waiting for a response, you decided to clean the house a bit. you vacuumed your rugs, washed the dishes in your sink, did your laundry, and that was pretty much all you had to do today. everything done before 10 a.m.
checking your phone, there were two more messages, one from each of the guys.
a <3: great! would you mind just meeting me at the office around 11:30?
you: that's no problem at all. any place in mind?
you checked the other message from spencer.
spencer :) : i'm glad you're doing well, y/n. and to clear things up, your face didn't look bad at all last night, bruise and cut included.
what a little charmer...
you: thanks for the clarity, it's very appreciated. so how've you been since last night? save any other damsels in distress?
you put your phone down and decided to start getting ready. you opted for some blue jeans, high rise, and a lavender halter top. you paired that with some white high-top converse and threw on your gray blazer spencer brought you from last night, after you retrieved it from the dryer.
wearing something so casual, you decided to just wear your natural hair to the office. you did, however, need to cover the remnants of your adventure last night so aaron wouldn't be upset upon seeing something.
you used some good ol' color corrector, concealer, a bit of foundation, and some powder to cover the bruises and fail to disguise the cut. then again, there's not much that can be done to cover that up.
you checked the time on your phone, 10:53, and saw two more message notifications.
a <3: i was thinking about ordering some mexican food to the office so we could just stay there.
you: i'm good with anything, so that sounds great! i'll see you soon.
you sent the message and hopped over to the one spencer had sent you.
spencer :) : sadly, no other damsels. although i suppose that could be considered a good thing to most. oh! and if you were wondering, i got your number from garcia. i wasn't stalking you or anything, no worries.
you: yes, i'm glad i was the only damsel in need of saving last night. also, if i were to find out you had been stalking me, i don't think i'd be afraid. in fact, i'd probably be more flattered that THE dr. spencer reid would consider me stalk-worthy.
was it flirtatious? yes. would it make him flustered? probably. would i enjoy being the person that flustered him? absolutely.
sent.
you got into your car and began the journey to quantico. the drive isn't very long, only about twenty minutes. you hopped out of the car, and made your way to the front desk to check in. looking over your shoulder, you saw none other than spencer reid walking up to you before the woman gave you your visitor's badge.
"hi there, damsel," spencer smiled as he greeted you. you walked closer to him after thanking the lady.
"hey, hero," you laughed as you both got closer. "is it too soon to hug you?"
"oh, uhm... not at all. i was actually-yes. i do want to- i'm just gonna..." he stuttered as he opened his arms for you to snuggle into.
"i like your hugs," you surprisingly announced.
"th-thank you," he smiled as he rested his chin on your head, secretly enjoying the coconutty scent that wafted off your hair into his nose.
"yea this is gonna be the new greeting tactic for us. just saying," you huffed into his chest.
"i wouldn't mind that at all," he laughed before you pulled back from his embrace, giving his shoulders a little squeeze before relinquishing all contact.
"okay, i'm here to see aaron. i'm assuming he's in his office, like always?" you rose one eyebrow in question before feeling a hand on your shoulder, turning to see aaron.
"i'm not always in my office," he rebutted as he embraced you in his arms. "how are you?" he asked nicely.
"i'm good! i hope you aren't overworking yourself like you usually tend to do," you voiced into his chest. he pulled back, not releasing your shoulders but looking deeply at your face.
"what's that?" he pointed to your cheekbone, his brows furrowing in concentration.
"oh, pshh. it's nothing," you shrugged as you waved his hand off, noticing spencer behind aaron with a look on his face that suggested you tell your brother what it was.
"y/n. what happened?" he pushed, giving you his 'brother' look.
"fine," you huffed. "i was gonna have to explain it eventually," you rolled your eyes. "last night before i left, ron got a bit handsy. before he did too much, spencer showed up to return my jacket. things got out of hand, ron might've slapped me, spencer might've pushed him against a wall, all's well that ends well," you grinned in hopes that he wouldn't have understood a word you just uttered.
"ron slapped you?" he asked in disbelief, his face still showing no emotion as per usual.
"yea, but spencer stopped him before he got to do anything else. oh! i don't have a job at all anymore, so i'm free for the next two weeks," you pressed your lips together.
"reid was there?" he turned to face spencer, who's face looked like a deer in the headlights.
"yup. i don't know what would've happened if he didn't show up. i really owe him, aaron," you said, trying to calm your brother down from the edge he was not-so-clearly teetering on.
"well, reid. uhh, thank you. and y/n. you should've told me this the second it happened," he ordered, looking at you shooting daggers.
"sir, yes, sir," you nodded off. "i'm sorry i didn't tell you. i just knew you'd be upset and i figured since everything's okay now that it wasn't important," you shrugged, trying to diffuse the situation.
"it is important. it will always be important because you're important to me," he emphasized before taking a deep breath. "as long as you'll tell me next time i think i'll be okay."
"great! now when's the food supposed to get here because... food," you excitedly asked as you followed aaron as he turned to go to his office.
"it'll be here in about 10 more minutes," he announced as he motioned for her to sit beside him in the chairs in front of his desk. "so... what's the full story of what happened?"
"are we really gonna talk about that right now?" you huffed, clearly over the situation from last night.
"yes. we are. harassment is a serious issue that should be dealt with accordingly. you know that, y/n," he reasoned, propping his arm on his desk as he looked at you with his stern face.
"i do know that. i also know that he only ever did that to me. he has a wife and two kids; he'd never do anything to put them in jeopardy," you announced, trying to convince aaron not to press the issue any further.
"but he would be willing to risk a law suit from you because of what happened?" he questioned in defiance, not accepting the ask to drop it.
"i wouldn't give him a law suit, aaron. you know that," you remarked, leaning in towards him slightly.
"you should. logically, you should sue him for hitting you. and i'm assuming for whatever else he's done to you in the past," he corrected you.
"how do you know he's done anything in the past?" you questioned, aaron nodding his head to the side. "right. profiler," you sighed. "look, he used to call me names i'm uncomfortable with, but now i won't have to deal with him. i don't work there anymore and never will again."
"you may not work there, but what if another woman starts working in the office? who's to say he won't harass them as well?" you looked down into your lap, fondling your fingers in avoidance. "look, i'm not trying to be rude about it. i just don't like seeing you hurt, and to know that the guy who hurt you isn't getting anything done to him is ludicrous."
"i know. you've always looked out for me since we were kids, but i'm not a kid anymore. i'm a grown woman and can take care of my own business when i need to," you replied softly, placing your hand over top aaron's in comfort. "but thank you, for always caring. i know you do it because you love me, even though you don't say it often," you laughed, trying to bring some light hearted-ness to the situation.
"i do..." he nodded along. "love you, that is," he added with a rare smile.
aaron has always been there for you. ever since you were kids, because of you dad he would take the role of protector for both you, sean, and your mom.
because of his role of 'protector,' he has this external shell that he feels as though he can't shed. in his mind, if he sheds it he's not able to mask his feelings, leaving not only himself but also those he protects vulnerable.
"i love you too, a.," you smiled back, giving his hand a gentle squeeze before releasing it from your grip. aaron took his phone and checked the time.
"the food's here now," he announced as he went to go pick it up from the front desk.
when he returned he gave you the food and you began to eat together, him telling you the latest garcia story that got quite the kick out of you until his attention went elsewhere.
"... so...?" aaron asked sneakily, a sly grin appearing on his face.
"... so what?" you furrowed your brows in question as you took a sip of your drink.
"you and reid, huh?" he widened his eyes in suspicion.
"what about me and reid?" you wanted to press him further, even though you knew exactly what he meant.
"that's exactly what i would like to know. what's going on with you and reid?" he finalized, pointing his fork accusingly at you.
"nothings going on with me and spencer," you raised your hands in defense. "i just drove him home after he intervened in the... situation, last night so i made sure to thank him. he texted me earlier today to ask me how i was holding up after yesterday evening- like a gentleman," you pointed out, raising your eyebrows to establish some sort of dominance you knew you didn't have over your brother.
"right," he said in a sing-song voice, you rolled your eyes at his tone.
"shut up," you scoffed as you threw away each of yours' trash. "so, i think it's time for me to go," you smiled as you turned to face aaron from the doorway.
"ahh, right," he sighed with a small grin. "i actually talked to strauss about getting you onto the team," he raised his eyebrows.
"did you, now?" you smirked. "what'd she say about it?"
"she said that you'd need to fill out an application, and that if you were to be hired there'd be a trial run first to see if everything would work out smoothly," he announced happily.
"really? so there's a chance i could work here?!" you squealed, rubbing your lips into a tight line from the excitement.
"a pretty good one, at that. i actually have an application right," he reached over his desk to retrieve a couple pages stapled together, "here," he smiled, handing you the application forms.
"oh my gosh!" you shouted, throwing your arms over your brother's stomach and squeezing him tightly. "this is so exciting! do you think i'm actually qualified?" you asked, pulling back from his embrace.
"are you kidding? of course you are?" he asked incredulously. "just fill those out, return them to strauss, and i'm sure she'll review them quickly," he nodded.
"right. i'll get going now," you smiled widely. "thank you, a. thank you so much," you said, giving him one last hug before you whooshed out of the door, papers in hand.
you walked down the stairs and out of the glass doors towards the elevator. the doors started to close after you pressed the 'lobby' button, but there was a brown satchel stuffed between them to stop the from closing right before they shut. once thy opened back up, you noticed who the bag belonged to.
"hey, spencer," you smiled, scooting over in the elevator to make more room for him.
"hey, y/n. how was your lunch?" he asked, returning your smile.
"it was pretty good. aaron gave me an application for the bau, which is very exciting," you bit back a wide grin.
"really?" he asked happily, his eyebrows raised, you nodded in return. "that's so great!" he said cheerily, wrapping his arms around your waist an lifting you off the elevator floor as the two of you giggled together.
"i know! if i'm being honest, i'm a bit nervous about it, y'know?" you said as he placed you back onto your feet, your hands still on his biceps.
"why? we already know you'll fit in well and do great. what's making you nervous?" he asked, his head tilting slightly as he looked at you with a confused expression.
"i don't know..." you started. "i guess since i've only worked at one job, doing one thing, moving nowhere, staying stagnant, i just don't know anything else," you shrugged.
"it's actually incredibly normal to feel nervous about a new job. over 80% of working professionals feel nervous or anxious when starting a new job," he clarified as the elevator doors opened, you both walking out together. "think of it this way: you know the material, you're more than qualified, you know everyone you'd be working with, and you're passionate about what you'll be doing. there's no doubt that you'll do amazing," he encouraged as you continued the walk to your car.
"thank you. at least i know i'm not the only one that gets this way," you sighed. "so why'd you walk all the way out here?" you giggled. "don't you still have work?"
"uhh, yes. i-i do have to work. i just f-figured- i just wanted to uh, talk to you?" he stuttered out, clearly not realizing how charming it was.
"well, thank you, spencer. i really enjoy our little chats," you nodded as you unlocked your car. "thanks for walking me out. i'll see you?" you asked.
"yea, yes. i will uhm, see you later. goodbye, y/n," he smiled gorgeously.
"see you later, spencer," you grinned back as you closed your door and began to drive off after buckling up.
halfway home, you got a call from someone. you pressed the bluetooth answer button on your radio to answer.
"hello?" you replied, readjusting your hands on your wheel.
"y/n hotchner. i can't believe you were at the office and didn't even bother to say hi to me!" emily's voice rang through the speakers.
"emily! hello to you too," you giggled.
"you even said hi to reid! but not me?" she shouted. "what gives?"
"sorry, i just kinda ran into him, i guess. well, he ran into me," you corrected yourself.
"what does that mean?"
"well, he kinda stopped me while i was in the elevator so he could talk to me. he's such a good friend," you complimented.
"only friend?" emily asked suggestively.
"yes, em. only friends," you laughed at the insinuation.
while it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world to be more than friends with him, it certainly wasn't the right time for a serious relationship in your life yet.
"righhtt... anyway, that's not the only reason i called you," she stated.
"and why did you do that?" you asked as you turned onto the highway, a straight shot to the street with your house on it.
"i wanted to know if you'd like to come with us to a bar after we get off of work tonight?" she asked.
"hmm... who's 'we'?"
"well there's me, morgan, garcia, and you if you'll come?"
"sure, it sounds fun," you agreed. "besides, not like i have anything to do with no job and all," you laughed out.
"great! now we could probably convince reid to come now that you're going!" she exclaimed.
"jeez, em," you huffed as you rolled your eyes and turned onto your street.
"you know it's true. morgan's already teasing him about it and everything," she snorted out over the phone.
"oh poor spencer..." you grimaced as you thought about the relentless teases.
"yea, yea, yea. but you're coming, and there's no backing out! i'll just pick you up before i head to the bar. be ready at 8, ma'am. dress hot, please, garcia and i already agreed to it," she demanded.
"yes ma'am, sounds good," you nodded even though she can't see you.
"alright, love you, bye," she said, holding out the 'e'.
"love you too, bye," you said as she hung up the phone, finally turning into your driveway to be met with your gate.
you entered the code and the gate opened, allowing you to drive half a mile up to your house. you had always wanted a nice, big house as a child. the kind that people had in movies, and everyone looked at online. you signed a lease for this house a while back, and got an amazing deal on it sense you knew who owned it previously.
unlocking your door, you walked into your house with the papers in hand. you walked into your dining room and started filling the papers out easily. it was only 1 p.m., so you had a while before you had to start getting ready for going out with them tonight.
*******
you threw on a maroon colored corduroy skirt, tucking in your spaghetti strap, black tank top. adding some black heeled booties, you added a few silver pieces of jewelry.
after adding some mascara, lip gloss, and a bit more powder you felt like you were ready to walk out of the door. you did a few spritzes of perfume before grabbing your black crossbody purse, letting it hang on one shoulder before grabbing your black denim jacket, dashing out of the door to emily's car.
"hey em," you said as you swung the door open, crawling not-so-gracefully inside.
"hey there," she said as she examined what you were wearing. "i seriously did my makeup for half an hour and you come out looking like that? it should be illegal to look that hot, y/n," she rolled her eyes with a huff.
"are you kidding me?" you replied, looking over to see what she was wearing herself.
she had on a short, black dress that had a low neckline, allowing tasteful cleavage to show through. she wore that with some red pumps to match her lipstick and some shimmery eyeshadow.
"okay, you can't say that. you look hot, em! don't sell yourself short," you punched her arm playfully.
"yea, yea, yea," she said, beginning to drive out of your driveway.
once you arrived to the bar, it looked like it was almost full. the music was loud, and you could feel the base through your feet on the floor. it took you about a minute until you could find the others, derek, pen, and spencer, sitting at a booth in the corner of the bar.
because of how crowded it was, you sat across from penny and derek and in between spencer and emily. you were practically on top of spencer because of how small the seats were, the poor guy.
"damn, you look great, y/n," derek gushed before looking at spencer with a smirk. "don't you think, pretty boy?" he laughed out, earning a jab from penny in the stomach.
"play nice, derek," she scolded him. "but you do look great, y/n. your legs look amazeballs in that outfit... like wow," she exaggerated.
"oh, shush," you blushed. "i'm kinda hungry... you guys?" you asked them.
"i could go for some cheese sticks," emily replied.
"i ate before we came here," spencer replied with a smile, leaning into your ear a little bit to answer.
"so cheese sticks and... cheese fries? i adore cheese fries," penny added.
"i'm okay with whatever. i'll go order," you said as emily got up to let you out.
"i'll help," spencer added as he scooted out with you.
"great, any drink requests?" you asked, pointing out to all three others.
"jack and coke," emily requested.
"anything fruity they have!" pen told you.
"whiskey, on the rocks," derek said with a smile.
"you've got it," you said as you turned around, realizing how crowded it was as you tried to weave through the first few people in your way.
you felt a hand grip yours firmly, turning to see it was spencer's hand you felt a sigh of relief wash over you. he leant down to your ear to talk to you, so you leaned a bit closer to him.
"i'm gonna put my arm around your waist so we can get through easier. is that okay?" he asked. his breath on your neck and ear almost distracted you from the question.
"y-yea. that's uhm... that's okay," you nodded your head as you felt his arm snake around your waist, pulling you closer to his side.
you moved one of your arms around his torso in return, squeezing yourself further into your side so you could avoid bumping into as many people. you could smell his sweet cologne, and the smell of what seemed to be coffee and old books. the warmth of his entire being was undeniable, drawing you closer to his presence.
eventually when you made it to the bar, you both kept your arms around the other. after ordering the food and drinks, you finally pulled your arm back, but stayed just as close to him.
"have you filled the application out yet?" spencer asked sweetly, leaning into your body.
"yea, i finished them just before i got ready to come here, actually," you nodded your head with a smile. "i guess you could say i'm a bit eager to start working."
"i think that's a good thing," he smiled brightly.
"oh, it definitely is!" you agreed. "i'm just so bored at the house. i've only been gone for a day and i need something to do, y'know?" you shrugged.
"busybody?" he questioned.
"oh you have no idea," you laughed, pushing his shoulder back playfully.
"i guess it runs in the family. hotch is always working on something as well," he mentioned. "so working at the bau would be a great fit for you both."
"yea, i sure hope so," you said longingly. "so what else do you do for fun... besides reading and working, of course," you asked.
"uhmm, i enjoy magic, i guess," he expressed.
"really?" you perked up, straightening out your posture at what he revealed.
"yea. i know a few little party tricks. wanna see?" spencer proposed, you nodded eagerly. "okay," he licked his lips as he began digging into his pocket and pulled out a $20 bill, also getting a pen. "watch..." he said as he jabbed the green paper with the pen.
"okay?" you squinted your eyebrows at what he was doing, unsure of where this trick was leading.
he then started to drag the paper around the pen, not tearing the bill at all. you felt your jaw drop in awe as he continued playing with it. then, he drug the pen all the way out of the bill, not a hole in sight. he made the bill disappear, leaving you stunned.
"what? how did you-? where did it-?" you stuttered, looking at him accusingly.
he reached around your hair, behind your ear and pulled out the same twenty dollar bill as earlier, a smug look on his face as he did so.
"okay... wow." you said as you began slow-clapping in awe. "i'm thoroughly impressed, spencer."
"thanks," he smiled shyly as he tucked the bill back into his pocket. "i've been doing magic since i was a kid. it's one of my hobbies when i'm we're not trying to catch serial killers," he shrugged.
"i'd say you've picked a good hobby," you chuckled. "i bet kids love it when you do them, huh?"
"yea, it's quite the entertainment for children," he nodded. "i love their reaction to it. it just makes me happy that i can bring a smile to their face."
"that, spencer, is fascinating," you complimented as the bartender handed you the drinks and spencer the food to take back to the table.
walking back was much easier than your journey to the bar, people actually making way for others with their hands full of refreshments. at least some people still had their manners.
"okay guys," you addressed as you began passing out the drinks, "here is your whiskey, jack and coke, and a tequila sunrise for pen."
"ouuu! i like the sound of that!" penny cheered as she took a sip of the drink, her eyes widening with delight.
"thank you, ma'am," derek thanked as he took a sip of his drink.
"absolutely perfect, y/n," emily relished in her beverage.
the rest of the night was fun. you laughed, joked, and danced with the girls. you even got to know spencer a bit more, much to your liking.
the next day you turned in your application, and was surprised when you got the job on the spot. you would begin your trial run in one week.
and you couldn't believe how fast that week went by, because as soon as you blinked, you were in the bullpen of the bau at your very own desk.

Taty wakes up on the morning of February 5th and feels the nerves start to hit her. Today, she'll be meeting Cale in person and interviewing him for the podcast. A part of her is afraid things will go wrong once they meet and he won't be interested in her anymore. While the other part of her knows that Cale is too nice of a person to ever break her heart like that. If things don't work out, he'll be nice and respectful about it.
In preparation of meeting Cale, she self-isolated from her family for a couple days and got tested for COVID-19. She tested negative thankfully so she can go meet Cale without putting him in danger.
She brushes her teeth and has breakfast as she prepares herself mentally for the podcast. She writes down her questions and her intro, so that she doesn't forget anything that she wants to say and ask. After breakfast she showers and changes into a comfy, warm outfit to withstand the cold of New England winter. She knows the high is only gonna be 37 and with the wind in the city of Boston, it's gonna be way worse.
She loads her car up with all her equipment and starts making the trip towards Boston. She decides to make a trip to her Aunt's apartment in Roxbury, which is on the outskirts of the city. She parks her car inside the community and makes her way into the apartment, since her Aunt always leaves her door open.
"'Cion Tia! (Blessings, Auntie)" she smiles, greeting her Aunt Leo who's in the kitchen making food.
"Dios te bendiga, mi'ja! Que haces aqui? (May God bless you, honey! What are you doing here?) " her aunt asks, as she stands in front of the stove.
"Voy hacer una entrevista con un jugador de hockey (I'm interviewing a hockey player)" she explains, not wanting to mention that she's sort of seeing that player.
"Que bueno mi'ja! ¡Me alegro! Yo se que todo va salir bien porque tu eres una mujer seria y muy inteligente! (That's amazing honey! I'm glad! I know that everything is gonna go great because you're a serious and intelligent woman!" her aunt cries out.
"Gracias Tia! Y Cola y Nine? Thank you Auntie! Where's Cola and Nine?" she asks, referring to another aunt and uncle.
"Nine está trabajando y Cola salió con Frank y Bernardo a ayudar alguien con un trabajito. (Nine's working and Cola went out with Frank and Bernardo to help someone out with a small job," her aunt explains.
"Bueno, yo vine aquí solamente para verte y saludarte. Me voy a quedar en un hotel esta noche y voy a regresar a casa mañana. (Well, I came here only to see you and greet you. I'm staying at a hotel tonight and I'm going back home tomorrow)" she explains.
"Quédate aquí por un rato más. Ya la comida está lista como en 15 minutos. (Stay here for a little longer. The food will be ready in like 15 minutes)" her aunt explains.
"Tengo planes con el jugador pero no diga nada a Mami por favor (I have plans with the player but don't say anything to Mami please)" she pleads.
"Oh ya veo. No le digo nada, mi'ja (Oh, now I see. I won't tell her anything, honey)" her aunt replies, nodding her head.
"Gracias Tia! Dale saludos a Cola, Nine, Frank y Bernardo. Ojala los veo mañana (Thank you, Auntie! Say hi to Cola, Nine, Frank and Bernardo. Hopefully I'll see them tomorrow)" she smiles, hugging her Aunt.
"Con dios, mi'ja. Tengas cuidado, pero lo disfrutas (Take care, honey. Be careful, but have fun)" her Aunt smiles back, kissing her cheek.
Taty leaves the apartment and gets back into her car to make the trip to a hotel right across the street from the TD Garden. During the drive, she hits some traffic because the city of Boston has awful traffic, but arrives at the hotel in 20 minutes. Workers help her get her stuff out of the car and she gets her car parked by the valet. She makes her way inside the hotel and checks in. The workers help her bring her stuff to her room on the 7th floor. She makes her way inside and unpacks her things, putting them out. She puts her recording equipment out on the table and then heads to the windows to take a picture of her view of the Bunker Hill Bridge and TD Garden. She sends the picture to Cale
To: Cale 🥰
Nice choice for the room. You remembered how I like my city view and bath tubs to take baths in
From: Cale 🥰
Of course I remembered! I remember every single thing you've told me
To: Cale 🥰
How quickly can you get your butt up to my room?
From: Cale 🥰
I'm in Mikko's room rn with the guys but I can make up an excuse and disappear
To: Cale 🥰
I want to order room service and then interview you
From: Cale 🥰
Alright I'll be there in a few
She looks at herself in the mirror, making sure she looks good. She realizes how dumb it is for her to stress over her looks when Cale has literally seen her looking gross with no makeup on and her hair looking a whole ass mess.
She goes on her phone and tries to calm down her nerves. After a few minutes, she hears a knock on her door. She goes up to the door and opens it, meeting Cale who's dressed in an Avs sweatshirt and sweatpants. She pulls him in and closes the door shut right away, so that no one can see.
He lifts her up for a hug and she wraps her legs around him, her tiny frame wrapping around him tightly. They embrace each other for a few moments before putting her back down.
"So you like the room I picked out for you?" he asks, as she leads him further inside the room.
"Yes! It's perfect! It's honestly way too big for just me," she smiles.
She gives him a quick tour of the room and bathroom and he sits down on the bed while she opens the room service menu.
"Do you want anything?" she asks him.
"No, I already had lunch with the team," he informs her.
"Alright," she nods, looking back at the menu.
"Order anything you want regardless of price. It's on me," he informs her.
"Cale, I can't make you spend all this money on me. You're paying for my room and the valet parking, the least I can do is pay you back for the food," she protests.
"I appreciate your concern, but this is nothing to me. Let me treat you," he replies, trying to convince her to let him spoil her.
"You're lucky you're cute," she sighs, giving in.
She calls room service and places her order. As she waits for her order, she turns on the TV and gets on the bed, snuggling into Cale's side. She puts on NHL Network and they watch highlights from the night before, while talking about certain plays and players.
"You know I've never met a girl that I could talk about hockey with like this. Like you actually understand the sport and everything," he comments.
"Well I've been a fan for so long and I've always been obsessed with sports since I was a little kid. It's the reason why I was always one of the guys growing up," she explains.
"And I think it's the coolest thing about you! You're so passionate about sports and sports stats! You're passionate about diversity and inclusion in sports too!" he smiles, running his fingers through her hair.
She feels the heat rise in her cheeks and she wishes he would just kiss her already, but she's too shy to do it herself.
"Well thank you. For a long time, I was embarrassed about how nerdy it is. It's probably why guys never saw me as anything more than a tomboy," she explains sheepishly.
"Yeah well it's their loss. They never got to see how incredible you really are," he smiles, kissing her forehead.
If she could die in his arms right now, she wouldn't mind honestly. She's never felt this sort of warmth and such intense butterflies in her stomach. Her heart feels so full and she finally realizes that this is what falling in love feels like. She had never felt it before but she loves the feeling so much that she doesn't want it to end.
The room service arrives and she brings the tray full of food inside. She sits down on the bed and starts eating as they watch TV and make small talk.
"What did you and the boys do today?" she asks.
"Well we got here late last night, so none of us woke up til like 10am. We all got ready and had lunch in the restaurant. Then we went to Mikko's room to play video games. It's been pretty boring so far, but we're not doing much because of COVID. We can't be going out like we used to," he explains.
"Yeah this virus has really fucked things up here. The governor of Massachusetts still hasn't allowed any fans to attend Celtics or Bruins games at the Garden and I don't know if he will for the rest of the season. Maybe he will for playoffs but I don't expect him to," she explains.
"I get that though. We have to keep people safe as much as possible until we eliminate this virus," he adds.
They switch the subject after that and keep the light conversation flowing until she finishes eating. She then sets her empty tray outside the room and starts setting everything up for the podcast, handing Cale a mic. She grabs her mic and sets it up, hooking everything up to her laptop. She checks the audio, making sure it's all good before starting the recording on her laptop.
"Our next guest is the biggest we've had so far. He was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta and was named after a Flames player. He grew up a Flames fan and made a name for himself in the AJHL playing for the Brooks Bandits, where he was named AJHL player of the year. He quickly became a top prospect and was selected 4th overall by the Colorado Avalanche in 2017. He played two seasons at UMass Amherst with the Minutemen, setting school records. He won the 2019 Hobey Baker Award and led the Minutemen to the Frozen Four, where they lost to the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs in the championship game. He signed with the Avalanche immediately after the loss, ending his collegiate career and made his debut in Game 4 of the 1st round of the Stanley Cup playoffs with Colorado in his hometown of Calgary. With family and friends in attendance, he scored his first ever goal in the game. He recently won the 2020 Calder Trophy given to the league's top rookie. Welcome to the Ace of Hockey podcast, Cale Makar," she introduces, absolutely nailing the intro.
"Wow, that has to be the longest intro I've ever gotten for an interview, so thank you," he smiles.
"Well you're a young superstar now, so I gotta have the intro reflect that," she replies.
"I don't know if I'm worthy of such an intro, but I appreciate it though," he smiles.
She starts asking him questions about his childhood and what it was like growing up in Alberta, how he ended up playing Junior A instead of Major Junior, what made him go to the college hockey route, as well as what his draft day experience was like. She also asks him what his experience was like at UMass Amherst, and what it was like playing in the National Championship game and winning the Hobey Baker. She then asks him about signing his ELC and what it was like making his debut in the playoffs in his hometown and scoring a goal in his debut. She then asks him about his rookie year and what it was like in his first full season in Colorado.
He also explains how Nate took him under his wing this season and really helped show him the ropes on how to be a pro. He also talks about how great of a captain Gabe is and who are the funniest guys on the team, as well as the pranksters. He also explains how it was like for him personally in the bubble. He also mentions everything players have said and done about social justice change and how important it is to listen and be an ally for minority groups.
They finish up the interview and he helps her clean everything up.
"So, I have a team dinner in like half an hour that I need to get ready for. I promise I will come back afterwards so we can hang out," he explains.
"That's fine, Cale. I'll probably just take a nice bath and relax, maybe listen to our interview. I'll send you the audio and if you want anything edited out, just let me know," she explains.
"Of course, love. I'm not concerned about that honestly," he assures her.
"Go get ready before you're late. Afterwards, you know where to find me," she smiles, pushing him lightly to the door.
"Alright fine. No need to kick me out," he teases, walking towards the door.
As soon as he gets to the door, he turns around and brings her in for a hug, lifting her from the ground. He sets her back down after a few moments.
"Bye Cale. Have fun at dinner," she smiles, kissing his cheek.
"Bye love," he smiles, walking out.
She shuts the door immediately and heads to the bathroom to take a nice relaxing bath in the tub. She turns on the water and gets undressed. Once the tub is filled, she stops the water and throws in a bath bomb. She gets in and immediately soaks in the warmth of the water. She sends a selfie of her in the bath and sends it to her sisters in their Ventura Rodriguez sisters group chat.
From: Katie
Damn how tf did you get a sugar daddy?
From: Kiana
I thought you were interviewing a player today? Is the player your sugar daddy?
To: The Ventura Rodriguez sisters
I don't have a sugar daddy and yes I interviewed the player today. He was nice enough to book me a room at the hotel he's staying at
From: Katie
No way he booked you a hotel if it's just a professional relationship. He definitely likes you
From: Kiana
So who's the player you're talking to
To: The Ventura Rodriguez Sisters
Nope not telling y'all. He's not my boyfriend so y'all don't got to know
She puts on some soft R&B and lets the music relax her. Before she knows it, she's been in there for an hour and gets out. She wraps her body in a towel and unplugs the drain. She dries herself off and changes into a faded URI basketball t-shirt and boyshorts. She dries her hair with a blowdryer and gets into bed, opening her laptop.
She listens to the 40 minute long audio clip of the interview and loves the interview. The conversation just flows between them and she thinks that her listeners are going to really love it, even though they didn't talk so much about social activism, like she has with other guests on the podcast. Her stomach starts to grumble and she realizes she hasn't had dinner yet. She grabs the room service menu and starts looking, as she's about to call to place her order, she hears a knock on the door.
She gets up and goes to the door. Unfortunately because of her lack of height, she can't see through the peephole who it is. She opens the door and internally sighs in relief when she sees it's Cale dressed in a UMass sweatshirt and shorts. He walks in and hugs her, lifting her up again.
"Do you have a thing for lifting me up?" she asks, as she wraps her legs around him.
"You're just so tiny that it's hard for me not to do it," he teases, referring to her 4'9 height.
“No, I think you have a thing for lifting me up, bud,” she teases back, moving her hands up to his hair.
“Just for that I’m putting you back down,” he replies playfully, setting her back down.
“Well you’re just in time to watch me order dinner,” she informs him, leading him towards the bed.
“I wish I could take you out to a nice dinner for a date,” he sighs, wishing he didn’t have to deal with the league’s COVID restrictions that prevent him from leaving the hotel except for practice and the game.
“It’s okay. You’ll just make it up to me some other time. We can just watch TV while I eat. That sounds like a pretty nice date to me,” she explains, grabbing the phone to call room service.
She calls room service and places her order. She decides to get comfortable and get under the sheets.
“Are you gonna join me?” she asks, referring to the spot right beside her under the sheets.
He quickly gets under the sheets with her and she rests her head on his shoulder. He turns on the TV and puts on NBCSN to watch the Flames play the Sabres in Buffalo.
“Is it cool if we watch the game?” he asks.
“Of course! I love watching hockey even if it doesn’t involve teams I cheer for,” she smiles, resting her head on his chest.
He strokes her back up and down with his fingers, causing sparks of heat to roll up her spine from his touch.
“Who are you rooting for?” she asks him.
“Calgary. I’m always gonna have a soft spot for my hometown team, even though they’re a conference rival,” he explains.
“I like Calgary. They have really sick players, like Monahan, Gaudreau, Lindholm and don’t even get me started on Tkachuk!: she gushes, causing him to stiffen up.
“I didn’t know you liked Tkachuk,” he replies, his voice getting deeper than it already is.
“I mean what’s there not to like? He’s a strong power forward with great hands! I mean that between-the-legs goal last year proved how skilled he is!” she gushes.
“Yeah he’s a great player but I didn’t think you liked him that much,” he replies, sounding bitter.
“No need to be jealous, babes! Tkachuk’s cool and all but he doesn’t compare to you,” she assures him, kissing his cheek.
The food arrives and she goes outside to pick it up. She brings the tray inside and starts eating, while watching the game.
“You want some?” she asks, referring to her pasta.
“No, I can’t eat that. The trainers will kill me,” he replies.
“Who cares! It’s just one bite,” she replies, bringing the forkful of pasta closer to his mouth
“Babe, I’m serious! I can’t eat that,” he groans, moving his face away further.
“Fine, more for me,” she scoffs, shrugging her shoulders.
She finishes eating her pasta and Cale stares at her for a moment.
“You got a little something,” he trails off, pointing to her face.
Her eyes go wide and she takes a napkin, wiping her mouth. She removes the bit of sauce from her lip and puts the napkin down on the tray. He lowers down the volume on the TV and takes her hands in his.
“Can I tell you something?” he asks.
“You can tell me anything,” she replies, feeling her heartbeat start to accelerate.
“I really like you. For the past 5 months I’ve been getting to know you and I believe you’re the most intelligent, beautiful, and caring girl I’ve ever met. I know things aren’t easy with the season going on and you living in Rhode Island, but I wanna try and make things work between us. Will you officially be my girlfriend?” he asks, looking directly into her eyes.
“Yes!” she nods, feeling like her heart might just explode.
“Can I kiss you?” he asks.
“I’ve been wanting you to kiss me all day!” she replies, getting a little chuckle out of him in response.
He cups her face and presses his lips gently onto hers and Taty swears she feels those cliché sparks everyone always talks about. She kisses back almost immediately, not holding back. The kiss quickly becomes more passionate and she’s reciprocating each kiss enthusiastically. After a couple minutes, they break apart.
“You know how I told you I’ve never done this before? Well, I want us to take it slow and I hope that’s okay with you,” she says sheepishly, afraid of rejection.
“We can take it as slow as you want. You control how this goes. I will never push you to do anything you don’t want to do. I like you for you,” he assures her, kissing her knuckles.
She had never known what falling in love is like, but now she does because she’s definitely falling in love with Cale Douglas Makar. She never wants this feeling and she prays to God she never finds a way to fuck this up.
They spend a few more hours wrapped in each other’s arms before Cale announces he has to leave because it’s getting late and he has practice in the morning.
“Bye babe,” she smiles, leading him towards the door.
“Bye princess. Sweet dreams,” he kisses her.
He walks out the door and she shuts the door behind him. She pinches herself, thinking it might be a dream. She’s relieved to find out it isn’t a dream and she finally has a boyfriend for the first time in her life.

“I’ve got my fuzzy socks on and I’m ready for summer”
You arrive in New York at 10 AM. What's the first thing you do? Find a nice, cute cafe to get a coffee and pastry from and chill at for a bit while sorting out my plans for the day. You go by your locker & your bf/gf is cheating on you. What comes to mind? I’m not in school anymore, but hypothetically I’m sure I would feel a lot of emotions--angry, hurt, upset, confused... like wtf?? And damn, right in front of everyone, too? That would be humiliating.
You have to take out the trash & clean your room. Your reaction? I’m 31 years old, you gotta do that kinda stuff when you’re adult. I don’t personally take out the trash because it would be really difficult for me to do in a wheelchair, but I have other stuff I have to do. I don’t particularly enjoy it, it just is what it is.
How many siblings do you have? I have two brothers.
Have you ever made fun of a homeless/ mentally challenged person? No. What a shitty thing to.
Make up a funny word with your first name in it. I don’t know.
Do you like campfires? Yes. I love the smell, it makes me think of fall. And just the coziness of it.
What's your favorite color to write with? Black.
Do you write poetry? No.
When's your 20th birthday? [Day & Month is fine. Year if you want.] I turned 20 back in July 2009.
Do you spit in public? Ew, no. I don’t spit at all except for when rinsing my mouth after brushing my teeth. It makes me gag seeing people spit. I also have to watch out for that when wheeling around outside because I would DIE if it got on my wheels and then me. akjkslfjldsfjkldsfjkl. I’m going to throw up just thinking about it.
Are you in high school/middle school/college? I’m done with school.
How many push ups can you do? Zero.
How would you react if your cat/dog died? I’ve been through that twice before with my doggos, it’s absolutely heartbreaking and devastating. My dogs are my family. It’s no different than losing any loved one; they’re a loved one, too. I had a really hard time when my dog, Brandie, passed. It was so sudden and unexpected.
Are you trustworthy? Yes.
“when I make it shine...”
Do you play video games often? I’ve been playing Animal Crossing just about everyday since earlier this year. Prior to that, I’ve played a few other games in their entirety since having my Nintendo Switch that I got over a year ago.
Do you like life, love, funny or boy quotes the best? I like # relatable quotes.
Have you ever been cheated on? No.
Have you ever had fruit pizza? No.
Would you like to learn karate? No.
Do you think it would have been cool to live in the 80s? Maybe.
Do you think we'll have robots in the future? They’re already a thing, they’re just not like easily, readily available to everyone like a Rosie from The Jetsons or something.
Was the sun out today? Not yet cause it’s 5:54AM and it’s still pitch black, but it will be.
Do you know what 143 stands for? “I love you.”
Does it get up to 100 degrees where you live? Ugh, yes. And higher. D:
When you play video games, do you like the sound on or off? I generally have it low or off.
When's the last time you saw fireworks? Fourth of July.
Do you like Dr. Pepper? Yeah.
Will you be seeing the new Transformer movie? I never saw any of them. Not my thing.

“Tell me why you’re leaving me”
Did you wear shorts today? I don’t wear shorts.

What color is your laptop? It’s silver.
Do you like Paris Hilton? I don’t have anything against her.
Did you smile at all today? Not so far, but it’s only 6AM.
Do you have an Xbox? My brother does and I’ve used it.
When you were little did you have a magic 8 ball? Yeah.
Have you ever ate grass or birdseed? Eww, no. I wasn’t the kid that stuck everything in their mouth or ate weird stuff.
Do you and your friends have secret codes? I don’t have any friends.
Have you ever seen the Lincoln Memorial? Not in person.

“How do you love someone without getting hurt?”
Do you hope you live to be the age 70 or older? I don’t want to think about dying.
Did you go to preschool? Yep.
Do you usually wear your hair up when it's hot out? Yeah. I wear my hair up all the time cause I don’t have the energy or motivation to do anything else with it.
Where were you when 9/11 happened? I was bedridden at home because I had spinal surgery a couple weeks prior.
Which would you rather play: guitar or drums? Guitar.
Have you ever gotten detention? No.
When you were little, did you used to watch Franklin? Yeah. Aww, he’s adorable.
What's the most exciting thing that's happened during your lifetime? 9/11 and this pandemic are definitely the most memorable, but I wouldn’t use the term “exciting” to describe them. A few of our blizzards, perhaps. <<< Yeah, definitely not exciting, but certainly major, life changing, go-down-in-history events.
How high can you count in a foreign language? I could go on and on in Spanish like I could English, but let’s be real I’d stop at 100 haha.
What's the best thing to do on a hot day? Stay indoors with the AC or go to the beach.
Would you like to go to Rome? Sure.

Do you help your friends every time they need help? I tried to as much as I could.
Ever seen a Koala Bear up close? No.
Would you rather be blind or deaf? I’d obviously rather not be either one...
Once your done, are you done for good? Really depends on what I’m attempting to be done with.
Does it annoy you when girls wear a lot of make up? No? I dont why I would care.
“Blow the world a kiss”

Have you ever tried sushi? Ew, it’s disgusting.
When you were little, did you use to roll down hills? No.
Do you like store bought cakes or homemade ones better? I’d enjoy either one.
Do you think your a good kisser? No. Now I’m really out of practice.
Do you like long or short sleeves better? I like my sleeves to be like halfway from my elbow if that makes sense. Not a quarter sleeve, but a bit above that. Unless it’s cold, then I like long sleeves. I love when the sleeves are long enough to be able to pull down over my hands, but it’s hard to get the perfect fit when you have long arms like I do.
Do you like the name Jacob for a boy? Sure.
Could you live without electricity? Like, for how long? It would be a struggle, no denying that. I’ve never experienced going more than a few hours without it. I know people have to experience long periods without it sometimes or not have it at all, so I’m definitely fortunate.
Have you ever ate/drank something that was blue? Blue Gatorade, Pepsi Blue, the blue Mountain Dew, Kool-Aid, blue candies and cakes.
When is your last day of summer this year? I’m not in school, so no summer break anymore. However, summer is over and it has just recently started to feel like fall, so I’m quite happy about that.

Have you ever played laser tag? Nope.
Does your best friend live within 5 minutes from you? My mom and I live together.
If you got dared to dye your hair purple, would you? No. I dye my hair red and I want to keep it that way. It would be a big, annoying process to do another color and then to go back if I wanted, so nah.
How many contacts do you have in your cell phone? Not many.
Do you own earmuffs? No. It doesn’t get cold enough for them here.
Nothing worse than being sunburnt, don’t you agree? I’ve experienced much worse, but they are awful.

A/n: This is finally the second chapter of this series! Can’t wait for you guys to read it! Some of the gifs are not mine. Credit to the owners.
Chapter 2:
363 days left in Iraq.
There was a car left in the town centre with a bomb in it. It was in front of a United Nations building. Joslyn, Sanborn, Eldridge and their leader, Sergeant James arrived at their location.
All of the citizens were being evacuated as Joslyn helped James into the bomb disposal suit. She didn’t want to but Sanborn and Eldridge were too busy, doing their own thing. Joslyn was trying to make herself busy putting James’s suit on.
“I’m too old for this shit.” James muttered to himself. Joslyn didn’t reply, still making herself busy with his suit. She picked up his helmet, giving it to him and letting him attach it onto himself. She picked up her gun and slung it on her back.
“What? No words of encouragement?” James shouted after her as she had her back towards him. Joslyn rolled her eyes and shouted back, “Don’t die!”
James rolled his eyes and walked toward the car, which suddenly became engulfed in flames. James walked back and got out a fire extinguisher from the humvee. He then walked back to put out the fire and began to examine the car while Eldridge, Sanborn and Joslyn took up their positions as lookouts.
James opened the trunk and found several of the same type of artillery shells he'd seen the day before.
The desert of Israel was covered in rolling hills. Wind stirred up the wispy sand and the sun’s never ending rays beaten down on him mercilessly. Salty sweat rolled off James’s nose and stung his eyes. The suit was overwhelmingly hot and sticky. After a few moments, he takes his bomb suit off completely, knowing it won't protect him.
“What are you fuckin’ doing?” Joslyn demanded. She was the nearest lookout to James as he finally took off the helmet. “And don’t tell me it’s because of the hot weather!”
James, once again, rolled his eyes and conceded, “There's enough bang in there to send us all to Jesus. I'm gonna die, I wanna die comfortable.”
Joslyn looked over to the car and a bomb canister that James uncovered, which was poking out of the driver’s side of the car. There was enough explosive in the car to kill everyone nearby, including her teammates, even if they took cover. She sighed and said to Sanborn over the comms, “James is taking off his bomb suit.”
“What? Why?”
“I saw. There are a lot of canisters there to blow us up or something. I don’t know. Ask James or something.”
James disarmed the shells and began to search the car for the triggering device, a process that took several minutes. At one point, Sanborn tried to talk to him through a headset.
But all he did was tell him to fuck off.
So, he pulled it off and threw it aside.
A few more very tense minutes passed as James searched the car. Sanborn and Eldridge noticed several groups of Iraqis watching them from rooftops and from a minaret. They also saw a man filming the incident with a video camera. At the car, James finally found the triggering device and detached it.
“You done?” Joslyn asked him.
James replied with a thumb up but quickly turned into a middle finger.
When he returned to the Hummer, he lit a cigarette and was promptly hit in the face by Sanborn.
“You could’ve gotten us killed, you fucker. Don’t do it again.”
He was angry that James, yet again, refused to acknowledge him or any questions he had. James appeared strangely unoffended, nor was he angry at Sanborn.
Joslyn strutted up to him, taking the cigarette out of his hand and stubbed it out. “No.”
“What the fuck?” James snapped, crossing his arms at Joslyn.
“They’re bad for you.” She claimed, also taking his whole box of the deadly things and putting them in her pocket.
“And why do you care?”
“I’m responsible for your health and safety. That means you need to stop smoking.”
“You’re not my mom!” Accused James, pointing a finger at her. Joslyn sighed and put down his finger with her hand.
“Yeah? Well, it’s my duty to not get you killed. Whether you like it or not. And by the way, I don’t like this either. So, we both have to suck up and get on with it. Okay?” Joslyn walked off.
Before James could stop her, a colonel on the scene approached James and was clearly impressed with James’s steady nerves and ability to handle such a crisis.
Back at the base perimeter, Sergeant James confronted Beckham, who sells pirated DVDs to the soldiers.
“I want my five bucks back, buddy.”
“Five dollars for what, man? You crazy now?”
“Yeah. The DVD you sold me was crap.”
“You crazy, man. That's impossible. It's Hollywood special effects.”
“No. It was shaky. It was out of focus, buddy.”
“What, you want donkey porn?”
“It's crap.”
“Girls on dog? Gay sex, man? Anything you want, you get. I hook you up, man.”
Joslyn was also at the base perimeter, looking over at Beckham and James. She then realised why they hated each other so much.
It’s because they had a crush on each other. Maybe?
He was handsome from the depth of his eyes to the gentle expressions of his voice.
“I'm gonna buy another DVD, okay? But... if it's shaky - look at me - or out of focus, or any way not 100%, I'm gonna chop off your goddamn head with a dull knife. How do you feel about... I'm just kidding, I'm just kidding.”
James handed over some money and continued saying to Beckham, “Here. You're a good kid.”
James was amused as he hugged the kid’s head. “You're a good kid, aren't ya?”
He told Beckham he could keep the money if he was able to block a shot at the makeshift goal area which was set up.
The man looked like he played soccer for his entire life. Under that uniform was a lithe body that knew how to play and his face backed that up. Within his light tanned face are eyes that twinkle. In just moments of Beckham trying to hustle James further, he broke into a boyish grin.
Beckham blocked the shot and James agreed to buy another movie from him, mildly threatening him if it's defective.
After the team went out to the desert to detonate some of the explosives they've collected on missions (and James recklessly leaving his gloves at the blast zone), she did say to Sanborn that he should stop acting so childish to the idea of blowing James up. She would have agreed to that idea, but not after James’s interaction with Beckham earlier.
The incident with the Brits and the snipers in the middle of the desert seemed to form a stronger bond between Joslyn and her teammates. Having found that they can actually work well together as a team, they celebrate at James' housing unit.
They took turns pounding each other in the chest and drinking. Joslyn, on the other hand, was sitting in a nearby chair (which was quite comfortable). She rolled her eyes at her teammates’ antics.
By then, they were discussing why James seems to be such a maverick teammate and how he got into their line of work, James shows them a box of parts he's collected from nearly every bomb he's disarmed.
“This box is full of stuff that almost killed me.”
Sanborn saw a picture in James’s box that he got out. “Who’s that?” Sanborn pointed at the photo. James took it out and looked at it.
“That's my son. He's ' tough little bastard. Nothin' like me.”
“You mean to tell me you married?”
“Well, you know, I had a girlfriend and, uh, she got pregnant, so we got married, and we got divorced... or, you know, I thought we got divorced. I mean, she's still living in the house and she says we're still together, so I... I don't know --”
James paused and got out an engagement ring.
“-- what does that make her? I don't know.”
“Dumb... for still being with your ass.” Sanborn replied, chuckling at him.
James kicked at Sanborn. “Hey! She ain't fucking dumb, all right? She left me, that’s all. We’re not together anymore.”
That’s when it hit Joslyn. It hit her hard.
Her ex boyfriend’s words, in her head, were like nails and hammers breaking her heart apart, all over again. Her heartbreak was grief that came in waves, gruelling, stealing appetite and sleep alike. It was a shard in her guts that never left, though perhaps in time the edges will dull.
After Sanborn and Eldridge left, Joslyn kept sitting in the chair.
“You still here?” James pondered, as he closed the door and made his way towards his bed, putting the box back under it.
“Yeah…” Joslyn replied, knees up to her face, hugging herself close.
“You okay?” James pondered again, walking over to Joslyn, sitting next to her.
She shrugged her shoulders.
“I guess I wasn’t expecting --”
Her bottom lip quivered, the same as a baby pushed past endurance. Her eyes became glacier blue under the sheen of water, constant.
She then started to cry.
“Hey. Hey. Why are you crying?” James asked her, knowing what to do straightaway.
He wrapped an arm around her shoulders and pulled her close, gently rubbing her arm. Despite the heaviness in her stomach, it fluttered at the feeling of her body pressed against his. She sunk into the warmth of his side, appreciative of the simple gesture. His touch made the room warmer somehow.
“I don’t know. I guess your story about your ex-wife and your son reminded me of my ex-boyfriend.”
His fingers were long and slender, easily rubbing her arm, as if casual wind fluttering across the surface of sand and shifting it into motion so easily. Unlike others' his fingers were thin and frail, shaped by prominent phalange bones and knotted where the joints curled around the ends of each long and short bone in his hands. There was no muscle tone or fat definition and his skin was only the layer of dust so fine over the polished white underneath.
“I’m sorry.”
Joslyn bit her lip, eyes everywhere but on James. Then he moved closer with those eyes that look so deeply into her own.
They both knew it was coming.
James held her gently, cupping her face with one hand, also wiping her tears with his thumb. He leaned down and softly kissed the tender area at the base of her neck. Joslyn’s body went rigid with surprise as trembles shook her body and the euphoric warmth blossomed within her once more. Joslyn was breathless with delight as he showered her with gentle, soft kisses, each with its own flicker of warmth. Joslyn gazed up at him, thrilled beyond words to be the recipient of his affection. He drew back again and spent a moment studying her face.
“Thank you," he said in barely more than a whisper.
"For what?" She replied.
"For being you." His voice wavered, exhilarated from the tension between them.
Joslyn felt her blush deepen under his scrutiny. James gazed at her lovingly, his eyes softening with tenderness before sparking with something else. He tilted her head to the side and kissed her, his lips demanding. Joslyn felt a smoldering heat deep within her as James’s grip tightened, crushing her body to his, gentle yet firm. He slanted her head further, deepening the kiss.
He grabbed her by the waist, pulling her up close against his chest. His hand gently glided through her hair, as he looked at her in a way he had never looked at a girl before. Her eyes were candles in that night, their light a spark of passion... desire. As a small but teasing smile crept upon her face, goosebumps lined her skin, not the kind that one got in the cold, but the kind one gets when nothing else matters except right here, right now.

Dressed to Kill: Killer Shoes
Pairing: Bucky Barnes x f!Reader Words: 9852 Summary: Ever since Bucky found you on that island beach, you’ve been each others’ best-kept secret. So why are you looking at him like he’s a stranger when you’re supposed to be miles away? Warnings: NSFW (language, smut), 18+ A/N: Sequel to Dressed to Kill, one of my favorite things I’ve ever written, for @jewelofwinter‘s 1.5k writing challenge! Congrats to my dear Jessica on this awesome milestone! My prompt was booze. Hope you enjoy!!!
Sidestepping a tipsy woman’s flailing arm, Bucky snags a fingernail-sized quiche off a passing waiter’s tray. He pops it whole in his mouth, ignoring the snort of derision from the comm device hidden by his ear.
“Jesus, Barnes, you’re supposed to be the classy one.”
“Shoulda sent Wilson,” Bucky mutters as he dabs the corner of his mouth with a napkin.
Hill just chuckles. “Yeah, probably. If only he wasn’t the most recognizable superhero in America.”
How he manages to keep from rolling his eyes is a mystery. Thankfully, Hill doesn’t say anything else, even when Bucky makes the mistake of licking his fingers after eating a tiny, glistening slider.
For some reason, the cocktail party spirit is evading him tonight. Hill doesn’t know why, but she sure as hell knows he’s not on top of his game. If Sam were here, he’d be giving Bucky even more bullshit than Hill.
Well, Bucky knows the reason if no one else does. No one else had better know.
You’re his secret.
He’d be doing better if he didn’t know you were in town. He might have smuggled you a ticket, finagled your help, done something more fun than this private eye bullshit somewhere private—but no, you’re working too.
A different place, different mission, different target.
Presumably a different end goal, too. Well, whatever. Hill might judge, Wilson definitely would, but Bucky’s done too much murdering of his own to give a fuck if you’re off murdering someone who deserves it tonight.
He assumes they deserve it. You might have unconventional methods of making the world a better place, but that’s what you’re doing.
What he’s doing, too, even if tonight is the biggest pain in his ass since that long mission posing as security in Ukraine. If only you weren’t working. God, how nice that would’ve been. Bad table manners aside, he’s done his job. There’s loads of nooks and crannies in this place that’d be perfect for—
Bucky chokes on his champagne.
A woman just walked in. Black dress, deep lipstick, killer heels. Under all that, a face and body to die for.
It’s you.
Bucky turns away, face hot. He wipes his mouth as daintily as he can to disguise the utter bafflement he feels. Is the room warmer than before? He can’t tell. All he knows is that the mingling crowd is too much. Last time he’d seen you in a crowd…
He surreptitiously adjusts his pants. Best not to think about that now.
What the hell are you doing here? Did you finish your mission? How the hell did you even get a ticket?
He traces the outline of his phone in his breast pocket. It’s quiet. Can he sneak it out for a look, or is that too rude?
No, fuck that, he doesn’t need to look. If you’d called, or even texted, his phone would’ve vibrated.
Why didn’t you call?
Hell, why aren’t you looking at him? Talking to him? Running your hand down his lapel…
Bucky chances it. He turns around, but you’re leaning against the bar, eyes resolutely elsewhere. Mission be damned; the assignment can wait a few minutes. He makes his way through the crowd, silk dresses whooshing against his suit as he squeezes between clusters of the rich and ambitious.
He’s not the only one stunned by you. You’re smiling coyly at the bartender, whose eyes keep drifting back to you as he mixes a drink and slides it your way.
Huh. Bucky’s never seen you drink a martini before.
You stir the olive through your drink, eyes drifting down the bar and passing over Bucky with no more feeling than if you were looking at a stranger.
A chill runs down his spine.
You’re good at your job, damn good, but there’s never been a single moment that you haven’t reacted to the sight of him. For the first time, Bucky looks closer. The curve of your neck, the size of your breasts…
Ah.
Quite.
He orders a whiskey from the bartender, props himself on the bar with his elbows, and tugs his phone out of his pocket. Clicks off his comm device. Dials a number. Waits. His lips curl into a smirk when someone picks up.
“Hey, darlin’.”
—
You cross one leg over the other and lean back in your chair, lips pressed tight together as you adjust your phone against your ear. The man across from you watches with a sympathetic grimace as he cuts his steak.
“Ballsy of you to call after all this time,” you say stonily.
A pause, then a low chuckle that makes you glad you’re wearing closed shoes—Nicholas can’t see the way that sound curls your toes.
“Well, better late than never, right?”
“No, I think never would have been better.”
Nicholas nods approvingly. You reach over and slide your hand into his, mind a million—or more accurately, a quarter dozen—miles away.
“If you have something to say, say it,” you continue. “Otherwise—”
“I can see you when I close my eyes.”
You can hear the smirk in Bucky’s voice, but the next words come out sounding less sultry.
Less sultry, more ominous.
“Sometimes, like right now, I don’t even need to close ‘em.”
What?
Questions swirl in your brain. What the hell does he mean? He can see you? But you’re miles away, in some rich loser’s eat-in open-concept kitchen—
You swallow, set your jaw, and squeeze Nicholas’ hand. His eyes are blue, but they’re the wrong shade, the wrong shape.
Wrong everything.
“That’s very sweet,” you drawl. “But you can stop wasting your time. Go use those cheap lines on someone else.”
You hang up and groan, burying your face in your hands to disguise your racing pulse.
“Just block his number,” Nicholas says. He takes a sip of his wine.
“I will,” you lie. A few deep breaths help settle your nerves, but your mind is reeling. A sniff for good measure as you recreate some semblance of composure. “God, I can’t believe I let him get under my skin.” You rub your arms and shiver. “You think you know a person…”
“People can be awful,” Nicholas says. He sets down his fork and pats his knee. “C’mere, you.”
You glance at him from under your eyelashes as you set your napkin on the table and sidle around to drop on his knee. You loop your arms around his neck and press your cheek to his shoulder.
Nicholas settles his hands on your hips, his thumbs tracing circles low on your belly as he murmurs placating nonsense in your ear. You’re not listening. You’re busy unsticking a patch from the inside of your wide bangle.
“—and you know you can always trust me,” Nicholas says.
You cup his neck in your hands, the finger-sized patch latching seamlessly onto his skin and already starting to dissolve.
“I know,” you murmur.
You lean in slowly, but Nicholas blanches. He lurches to his feet, sending you sprawling to the floor.
“Nicholas?!”
“I—I’m sorry—I think I ate—”
He darts to the bathroom, and within seconds you can hear him retching.
Finally.
You climb to your feet and grab your phone, mind racing back to the Bucky problem now that Nicholas is out of the way.
What the hell did he mean, he can see you? How can he? Does he mean he’s watching a video feed? But there aren’t any here. You turn your phone in your fingers and bite your lip. Bucky’s working tonight, same as you—well, sort of. It would be silly to call him back before you’ve even thought his riddle through. Not to mention while Nicholas is still on his feet. You don’t know how much that patch will affect him.
How can Bucky be seeing you if he’s miles away? It’s impossible.
Unless…
Unless—
“Oh shit,” you mutter.
Someone is impersonating you at the party.
Someone.
Is impersonating you.
At the party.
Well that just takes the cake.
You slip your phone back into your purse and go knock on the bathroom door.
“Nicholas? Are you alright?”
A groan.
“I’m coming in,” you tell him. A beat, and then you push the door open with as concerned an expression as you can manage.
Nicholas is back on his feet, but he’s pale and shaky. Perfect.
“Oh, love!” you gasp. You rush over and steady him. “Let me help you.”
“You’re a godsend,” Nicholas says weakly. He leads the way to his bedroom—his apartment is sprawling; how the hell does he manage? Who needs this kind of space?—and lets you tuck him in.
“Shouldn’t have had that steak,” he says. “You did warn me it looked a little off…”
“Oh please,” you tell him. You press a kiss to his brow to conceal your scowl. Can’t he just go to sleep and stop talking? You’d only warned him about the steak in case of emergency. You hadn’t expected to need to pull off that trick… “Rest, dear. I'll come by tomorrow to check up on you, alright?”
“You’re an angel,” Nicholas mumbles. He smiles, finally letting go of your hand.
Angel?
You pull back as fast as you reasonably can, a little queasy yourself now. No one calls you an angel but Bucky. It’s wrong, sickening, to hear it from this dumb jerk.
It’s a disgrace. How dare he.
You’re out of Nicholas’ place before you even have time to consider your own mission. So much for his bank accounts, his trust funds, his shady offshore properties…
Well, screw that. It can wait. You’ll be back tomorrow.
—
Easy enough to catch a cab, easy enough to namedrop the most upscale venue in the city. Easy enough to hook into the video feeds you’d had Kasie hack into back when you didn’t think you’d be going.
You call Bucky as the driver peels away from the curb. He answers in a ring and a half.
“Didn’t know if you’d call,” he says.
“Is she wearing a black dress?”
“Uh… yeah. How’d you—”
“Feeds are fuzzy. Can’t tell for sure if that’s her,” you say curtly.
“Don’t be like that,” he says.
You bristle as you fix a fresh patch to the inside of your bracelet. Just in case. “Like what?”
“Like you aren’t glad I called.”
You close your eyes, tip your head back. “I’m a little preoccupied,” you murmur. “Not every day I find out my cover’s blown.”
“We’ll figure it out, darlin’.”
Bucky’s voice wraps around you, almost as comforting as if he was holding you in his arms. You'd had to hide your delight before, at Nicholas’ place, but no one’s looking at you this time.
This time, you let yourself smile.
—
The first time you’d met Bucky, you’d swept from the street up marble steps not unlike these. Of course, back then the whole point had been to distract him.
You smooth down your skirt as you wait for Bucky to let you in. This time, you’re distracted even before you walk in the door. Bucky’s nowhere in view and you’re already a bundle of nerves. Of course, Bucky’s not the one making you nervous.
He really should be, you decide. You’ve never not gotten a swoop in your stomach from catching sight of him, whether through a rifle scope on a rooftop or from the bottom of a carpeted staircase. Or from a bed. And he’d looked so good in the feeds, blurriness aside… No man had ever looked better in a suit.
If nothing else, thinking about Bucky is doing wonders to distract you from the more pressing problem. Who has time to consider the implications of someone posing as your double when in just a few moments, you’ll be able to run your hand down his velvet lapel?
A sigh escapes your lips. You lean against a column by the door, gazing down at the street. Cars start and stop as they ease by, the occasional bike or scooter weaving between traffic. Black taxis reflect the last pink stripes in the sky, the white streetlamps, the red-yellow-green of the traffic lights. Pretty, but your focus is still caught up with the man coming to fetch you.
It’s been too long since you’ve seen him, touched him… You’ve been in the same city for a few days, but his team is too perceptive for him to have snuck away. Every meeting with him has been snatched, secret. Your hands curl, fingernails digging into your plans.
What you wouldn’t give to have the freedom to have him whenever you want.
The desperation, the need tugging at you makes you feel like an addict, but god if Bucky Barnes isn’t the best drug there is.
“There y’are.”
You flinch, pulse racing under your skin, as that smooth voice washes over you. A swallow, and you press your eyes closed just for a moment before looking at him.
It’s the same exact rush you’ve gotten every single time you’ve seen him. The swoop in your belly, the clench of your thighs, the way your mouth goes dry when his lips quirk into their customary smirk. And gosh, that suit looks even better in person. It’s black, with sharp lines that mirror the sharp line of his jaw, and a velvet lapel that you just know won’t be nearly as soft as his lips. All your frustration melts away.
Finally.
“Hi,” you breathe.
Bucky offers you his arm, his blue eyes dark as they drink you in. A new dress, a black dress, the perfect match. The style he likes, with a fitted bodice and draping skirt. You hook your arm through his elbow, trying to hide your relief at finally being with him. Not to mention the absolute thrill of having his strong, solid arm under your hand…
Bucky flashes his ticket—and a SHIELD badge—at the doorman, who lets you both in with an inquisitive frown. Did he see your doppelganger earlier? No matter.
“Nice of you to join the party,” Bucky teases.
You snort. “I’d thank you for the invite if I wasn’t so damn aggravated.”
Bucky drops a kiss against your hair as you study your surroundings. A gilded lobby, just shy of ostentatious, with a a row of polished wooden doors leading into the function hall. Two concierges at the long counter by the doors, glassy-eyed and bored until they notice you looking, at which point they turn on megawatt smiles. You bite your tongue as you smile back. Ah, nothing like customer service.
That’s at least fifty percent of your own job, really. All that simpering at Nicholas…
You shudder.
Bucky pauses mere feet from the door—you can already hear the lounge singer crooning away—and frowns down at you.
“Y’alright?”
“Sure, sure.” You adjust your hold on his arm, then step back. Time to get back in the game. You rub your temples. “Is there a plan? Or are you just winging it?”
Bucky scratches his cheek, brow pinched. “She seems to be focused on one guy in particular, but I don’t know if it’s about murdering him or what.”
“And you just left her in there?!” you gasp. He rolls his eyes.
“Calm down, darlin’, no need to blow a gasket. Got my backup to come in, keep him busy. But not so busy the other you suspects.”
You let out a stream of air between your teeth. Fine. That works.
“Anyway, if you’re done accusing me of not knowing how to do my job—” he shoots you a sardonic look bordering on a glare— “I figured we’d just corner her, get her out, get her talking.”
“Okay. Let’s go.”
You brush past Bucky, eyes ahead, and push the doors open before he can stop you. Enough talking. Time to take this bitch—whoever she is—down.
—
Unlike the first—and only—time you’d been dressed to the nines together, you’re geared up. These are your killer shoes, with the blades hidden in the soles and a needle inside the right heel. There are two holsters hidden under your skirts, and false pockets granting easy access to your pearl-handled pistols. Your necklace hides a garrote, your bangle a drugged patch.
And you’ve got murder on your mind.
No one, not once in your entire career—or maybe even life—has ever pretended to be you. No catfishers, no copycats…
Well, not that you have a style that enables copycats. You’re an assassin, not a serial killer.
There’s a difference.
Right now, though, you feel the self-righteous pull of a worthy target more than ever. How dare she steal your face.
Barely anyone glances your way when you enter into the function hall. High ceilings, sparkling chandeliers, bubbling champagne passing by on a waiter’s tray. You snag a glass, but Bucky nabs it out of your grip before you can so much as take a sip. You scowl at him, but his eyes are twinkling as he drinks.
“Thanks,” he says. He offers the half-empty flute back to you, but you ignore it.
“Where?” you demand. “Where is she?”
Bucky tilts his head, and you turn to follow his gaze. There, at the bar, a woman in a black dress. Thicker straps than yours has, a fuller skirt… But it’s a close enough match.
A chill runs up your spine. Is that what you look like, in the flesh, from the outside? Are those your shoulders, your ears? Is that the curve of your cheek?
How?
You turn back to Bucky, heart pounding, a million questions on your lips. He touches your elbow and leans in close, his lips brushing the shell of your ear.
“She’s nothing to you.”
A shiver runs through you at the low timber of his voice. You pull back and meet his eyes. They’re burning, bright with determination and dark with—you can’t tell. Murder? Desire? Both?
He nods once, squeezes your hand, and melts into the crowd. You press your hand to your pounding heart. A few people glance at you, but you deftly avoid their gazes. A waiter passes with a tray of hors d’oeuvres; you take a tartlet, bat your eyelashes at the waiter, and trail after Bucky, caviar bursting in your mouth.
You don’t have any problems spotting him. He’s leaning against the bar now, chatting you—her up. Her shoulders are tense; you can see her back, and you have a suspicion she’s not quite able to meet his eyes.
Bucky calls the bartender over and orders her a drink; you can just make out the coaxing smile in his voice as he asks, “What’s your poison, doll?”
“Is booze poison to you?” your double asks. She shakes her head. God, even her voice sounds like yours. Eugh. “A martini, please.”
You slip between two men and slide onto the barstool right next to her. She’s still facing Bucky, and she doesn’t turn her head quite far enough to realize she’s been cornered.
“You know,” you drawl, calm as day, “what I really prefer is champagne.”
The woman freezes. Bucky slides his half-full flute of champagne past her to you, and you take a long, slow sip, gaze fixed on Bucky. His face is serious, but there’s a thrill behind his eyes.
Your double shifts back on her stool, twisting to face Bucky even more, sliding out of her seat. You stand up too, your breasts nearly pressed against her back. From here, you can see the differences. Her skin tone is a little darker, shoulders a little broader… The hair at the nape of her neck isn’t quite the right shape either.
You fiddle with your bangle as you wait for something, anything to happen. Should you play your cards and drug her? Chase her to the bathroom, corner her there? Or let Bucky lead her away, keeping her head unmuddled for easy interrogation?
It’s a choice you don’t get to make.
The woman spins, and the sight of your own face snarling has you reeling, breath catching and eyes going wide. It’s you, but it’s wrong, backwards, wrong wrong wrong—
A harsh shove sends you careening back, and then she darts off. You knock a stocky woman halfway over, barely managing to catch yourself on some man’s sleeve, but your eyes are latched onto her.
Did she really think she could run away from the Winter Soldier?
Your double only makes it a few quick steps before Bucky’s hand clamps onto her shoulder, spinning her back to face him, his SHIELD badge tucked in his fingers, a thin, dark-haired woman rushing forward to assist.
The man whose sleeve you're holding helps right you, and you shoot a sorry to the woman you’d nearly knocked over. She’s too busy gaping between you and your doppelgänger, her eyes round as dinner plates.
Now that your double’s being led away, your fury dissipates. She failed, she’s got her head slumped, and she doesn’t look anywhere near as good as you. A giggle escapes your lips, and the stocky woman stares.
“Evil twins, am I right?” you say.
The woman blinks, too shocked to answer, and then you dart after Bucky and the others, a bounce in your step and every single wrong thing turned right.
You weave between hobnobs as they slowly sink back into their sedate ignorance. How strange. How could anyone go back to their dull party when there’s something like this going on?
Bucky opens a door, and his associate drags your double through. You step ahead to follow, but he catches your eye and shakes his head just before he vanishes.
You freeze. Right. Of course. You can’t just run after him. He’s working. Your relationship, if you can call it that, is a secret. He’s an Avenger. And you’re just…
You’re…
Someone puts a hand on your back. You stiffen.
“Jeez, Mal, what the hell happened while I was in the bathroom?” a low voice mutters.
What the hell…?
You turn and take in the bland face of the middle-aged white man frowning around. Your heart skips a beat, and you let out a slow breath between your teeth. You know that face.
“Some woman got dragged off by the feds,” you whisper, linking your arm in his and angling him away from the bulk of the crowd.
His eyes widen as he looks around, more scared than confused this time. “Are you kidding?”
“No,” you say curtly. “Come on.”
Your grip is solid on his arm, but he puts up no resistance as you lead the way to a door, not the one Bucky dragged your double out of. Mal? Is that her name? Is it short for something? Mallory, Malia?
No. Malinda.
The name rings a bell, but for the life of you, you can’t place it quite yet. You push your guesswork aside as you lead the man—his name is Christian Havemeyer, old money, shady enough to get him onto your radar—down one carpeted hallway and then another to an out-of-the-way powder room.
Your radar.
Oh, of course. Havemeyer was connected to Rex Carston, your target back when you’d first met Bucky. And Carston’s date that fateful night had been Malinda.
Is the woman who’s stolen your face the pretty woman who’d been on Rex Carston’s arm the night he died?
Well, Bucky will find out. Right now, you’ve got your own job to do.
Havemeyer is pacing, hand clutching his dyed hair—there’s no way a man with so many wrinkles on his neck has hair that black—as you lock and lean against the door. You slide your hands into your pockets, watching Havemeyer carefully. He doesn’t seem armed. Better than that, he doesn’t seem the least bit suspicious.
Well, that’s about to change.
“Got any ideas?” you ask. He whirls on you, face red.
“What the hell do you think? You said this event was clear!”
“Well, clearly I missed something,” you say evenly. “That doesn’t mean we can’t still follow through.”
“Follow th—follow through?” Havemeyer gapes, then narrows his eyes. He looks you up and down, realization dawning in his face. He steps back, glances around. “Wait. You—”
“Hmm?” you drawl. You push away the lacy strap holding one of your pistols in place and curl your fingers around the grip. No point turning off the safety; you could take this guy barehanded.
Well, probably. It better not come to that.
Havemeyer’s face shifts from fear and confusion to stern determination. He steps towards you, puffing up his chest and balling his hands into fists.
“Where is she?” he hisses.
You raise your eyebrows, impressed despite yourself. Well, to be fair, he doesn’t know you’re armed to the teeth.
“What are you talking about?” you ask.
“You’re not Malinda,” he snaps. He takes another step.
A little too close for comfort.
You draw your pistol and press the barrel against his gut faster than he can blink. “Down, boy,” you say coolly. “You should know better.”
Havemeyer slowly puts his hands in the air. You push your gun against him, and he steps back one, two, three times before you’re satisfied. You click off the safety, just for added measure.
“Now,” you say, “let’s talk.”
He swallows. “Maybe you can put down the gun first.”
You tap your chin. Consider.
“No, I don’t think I will.”
Behind you, the doorknob rattles.
Well, fuck.
You keep your eyes on Havemeyer as you turn your head towards the door, trying to listen over his ragged breathing and your own. Not that your breathing is ragged.
“Mr. Havemeyer?”
A deep male voice, one you don’t recognize. Havemeyer’s face lights up as your stomach drops.
“Help!” he calls.
“Bad call,” you snarl.
A vicious crack—they’re shooting the door open. You shoot Havemeyer in the kneecap, his howl music to your ears. He collapses like a wet rag. You kick him low in the gut, further immobilizing him, and swing the chair at the counter around to wedge it under the doorknob.
You drop into a crouch and whip out the knife from your left shoe. Havemeyer is curled around his knee, whimpering.
Suits him, the bastard.
You dig your fingers into his jaw, the knife scraping against his clean-shaven cheek, and dig the barrel of your pistol into his wound. He sobs, scrambling, but you don’t give in.
“Talk.”
You’ve got a minute, maybe, before his goon opens the door. But it’s enough.
Havemeyer doesn’t just talk.
He sings.
—
A swift kick to the head knocks him out. Kind of you not to kick him in the knee; the pain would’ve done the trick, but meh. You’re not really here for him. It’s just a nice little bonus, learning things.
Anyway, better not to get blood on your shoes.
You wipe the barrel of your gun, bloody from being jabbed against Havemeyer’s knee, on his suit jacket. It’s been seventy-five seconds since you told him to talk. You really are good at your job.
Of course, you still have to deal with whatever’s waiting behind the door. It’s been quiet. Have they gone for help?
The powder room had no other exits, not even a window. Well, whatever’s waiting outside can’t be worse than things you’ve faced in the past.
Hell, you’re the woman who faced down the Winter Soldier and came out on top—well, not literally on top, but…
Eh, maybe later. Hopefully later.
You press an ear to the door, listening, not daring to breathe. It’s silent in the hall.
Worth the risk. You’re a professional, after all. If some rich man’s security is good enough to get you, you probably deserve to get caught.
You step back and whisk the chair out of the way.
The second you do, the door bursts open.
Oh, bother.
Tall, broad, bulky—you’re nearly pinned by his long arms, but you manage to duck aside. Still, he knocks your pistol out of your hands. You tighten your grip on your knife as you whirl to retaliate, but he jumps back. Your knife grazes his open jacket, cutting a neat slice in the thick material. You don’t have time to admire the clean cut because he’s lunging again.
And he’s got a knife too.
Oh, bother.
You kick the chair in his way, scrambling at the inside of your bangle. He throws the chair at you. It hits; you stumble back, but there’s just enough time as he tosses the chair aside. You hurl yourself at him, latching the patch from your bangle onto his neck with one hand while you drive your knife into his thigh with the other.
He grunts—more pain tolerance than his boss, apparently—and aims his knife at you. But with the patch administered, you’ve got a hand free.
He’s got no chance at all.
Well, let’s be fair. He never had a chance.
A knee to the groin, an expert twist of your hand, and his wrist cracks. This time, he does howl. He stumbles back, away from your knife, back through the open door into the hall. You stalk after him, a feral grin on your face as he slumps against the wall.
“That’ll teach you to pick on girls,” you tell him.
“Who are you?” he whimpers.
“None of your goddamn business.”
Your knife is still bloody. You hike up your dress and carefully wipe the blade clean on the inside of your skirt, still watching the bodyguard carefully.
A low whistle echoes down the hall.
You pause, a smile edging onto your face as you tilt your head. You don’t take your eyes away from the bodyguard, but your whole body lights up. You can sense Bucky from meters away.
“See something you like?” you call.
The bodyguard blanches.
You don’t blame him, really. It takes a really dumb criminal to be delighted to see the Winter Soldier.
What does that make you?
A lovestruck idiot, probably.
Bucky saunters down the hall, smirking. A pair of handcuffs dangle from his right hand; his left hand is tucked neatly in his pocket. “I might.”
Havemeyer’s bodyguard shifts a few inches down the wall as he holds out his trembling hands, one at an unnatural angle. Bucky spins him to face the wall and cuffs his hands behind his back. You slide your knife back into its slot in your shoe as Bucky shuts the bodyguard into the powder room.
“This yours?” Bucky asks.
You turn, still smiling, and reach for your pistol. But Bucky holds it out of your reach, the pearl handle clinking against his metal hand. You stick your hands on your hips and raise your eyebrows.
“That’s mine,” you tell him.
“No time for that now.” He loops his arm through yours and drags you down the hall. “Hill’s on her way over.”
Hill? Is that his associate?
Her?
You press your lips together as you run alongside him. Envy coils unpleasant and heavy in your chest.
Her?
You’re not jealous. You know Bucky well enough now to know he’s got no eyes for anyone else.
But… someone he can work with? Someone he can be in public with? Someone he can see without subterfuge, without shame…
You don’t have regrets about your career. None whatsoever. You’re talented, you’re passionate about it… Some people think murder is wrong, but the world is far better off without certain people in it.
But Bucky—he’s from another world.
A world where you’re not welcome. Not you, not your team, not your delight in a perfectly executed kill. He can ravish you all he wants—all you want, if you’re being honest—but at the end of the day, you’re just a dirty little secret.
It’s never bothered you before. Right now, though?
You hate it.
Bucky drags you down a back staircase, gripping your hand tight. You burst outside into a back alley, the fresh air cool against your clammy skin. A high fence shuts out the rest of the world, but when you look up, you can see the hazy sky, stars barely visible past the light of the city.
“That went well,” Bucky says cheerfully.
“Mm,” you answer, feigning cheer. “Can I have my gun back?”
“Oh this?” He dangles the pistol in front of your face, smirking. You stare stonily, not taking his bait.
Bucky’s smirk drops as you stand there. He passes the gun to you; you check the safety and slide it back into its holster, refastening the snap with a muffled click.
“What’s wrong?” he asks, voice low.
“I—” You draw your lower lip between your teeth and start to pace. A glance at Bucky; he’s confused, worried, his playfulness fading fast.
But the right words don’t come out.
“What did Malinda say?”
His face screws up, adorably confused. Even as you’re metaphorically kicking yourself in the foot, you’re half breathless by how much you love to look at him.
“Huh?”
“Malinda,” you say again. “The woman impersonating me.”
“Ohhh.” Bucky nods, his face smoothing. “She didn’t give her name, though I assume Hill is on it. Without her mask, it shouldn’t be hard.”
Your eyes bug out. “Didn’t you recognize her?!”
He frowns. Tips his head back. Then his head falls forward, chin nearly brushing his chest.
“Well, shit,” he says. “She was there when we met, wasn’t she?”
Oh my god.
“More than that,” you snap. “She knows who I am! She was Rex Carston’s dinner date the night we—”
You clap your hands to your mouth, but Bucky’s caught on. He steps closer; you step back, until your back is against the wall. He’s boxing you in, face stern.
“What’s this really about?” he says, voice low.
You lower your hands. They’re trembling. “She knows me, Bucky. She has to know me. How else…”
What else is there to say? If she’s in SHIELD custody, and she knows you, she’ll talk. She’ll talk, and you’ll be on their radar.
And then Bucky really will be in bed with the enemy.
“I hate being your dirty little secret,” you mumble, eyes fixed on his lapel. “I don’t want to have to be your enemy too.”
“No,” Bucky says firmly. He grips your face and tilts it up towards his. “You’ll never be that.”
“I'm basically that already!” You knock his hands away, shove him back. “Bucky, I’m tired of sneaking around! It was fun, but I’m tired of it! You don’t care, but I’ll never be good enough for your moralistic friends, and I’m tired of it.”
He blinks.
“But they like what you do,” he says. “I mean, the ones that matter.”
Thank god you’re leaning against the wall, because you’re pretty sure you just fainted.
“Excuse me?”
“They don’t know about us,” Bucky says slowly, “and they don’t know what all of you look like—at least they didn’t—but your team is on SHIELD’s list of outfits not to bother. An unofficial list, but it still counts.”
You’re a fish. A gaping fish. Bucky scratches the back of his head.
“Assuming you don’t take a sharp left turn in the evil direction, I mean,” he adds.
He peers up at you from under his eyelashes, hands stuffed in his pockets. Even with the sharp-as-knives suit and cheekbones, he looks more adorable than ever.
With Bucky clearly nervous, you find your voice.
“So all this time,” you say slowly, “there hasn’t been a reason to be all—” you gesture vaguely— “secretive?”
Bucky’s lips quirk up. “Well, I mean, there’s fun in intrigue. At least…” His tiny smile fades. “I think so.”
“Well shit, I think so too!” You snort. One step away from the wall, towards him. “I’m not in my line of work because I don’t like intrigue. But my god, Bucky, I could have been your date all night! You’re telling me I’ve been missing out on you for no good reason?”
“I figured you had good reason,” he retorts. He steps towards you now, his hands light on your waist. You melt into his touch, warmth spreading from his hands so close to your skin. His face softens. “I never wanted you to think… Shit, angel, I’m sorry.”
“I know. It’s okay.” You brush a hand across his face, thumb tracing his sharp cheekbone with a new kind of reverence. He’s close, his darkening eyes fixed on your face, your barely parted lips.
The world is wide open now, isn’t it?
You lean in, his breath on your lips before he stops you. His eyes dart over your heads, by the door—a surveillance camera, red light holding steady.
The very thing you’ve avoided.
The very thing you’re done with.
“Fuck that,” you murmur.
You grab his chin and kiss him, rough and hard and without mercy. He gasps into your mouth, and you bite his lower lip before drawing back. No blood, but his lip’s already swollen, dark pink and even more plump than usual. He’s the one gaping now. You drag your thumb across his mouth, admiring it.
“Fuck that,” you repeat. “Let them see.”
He stares. “Seriously?”
“Am I a liar, Mr. Barnes?”
“Not in the usual way,” he says, lips twitching.
“I’m serious. Now kiss me before I change my mind.”
Bucky crushes his lips to yours. You knew it was coming, but his intensity still tears a cry from your throat as he slams you back against the concrete wall. His hands knead your hips; his teeth nip at your lip just as you’d done to his.
Well, fair’s fair.
Heat thrums though you. You thread your hands in his hair and tug hard enough to break the kiss. His head falls back and you waste no time in leaving a mark against his neck, frantically unbuttoning his jacket, his shirt. He hisses into the open air as your teeth press just deep enough against his throat to hurt. Your lips follow your hands, kissing across that sculpted chest, fingers stealing touches of his skin as his hands skate up your sides.
When you reach the last button on his shirt, you snake your hand straight down his pants and take his hardening cock in hand. His hands squeeze painfully tight on your waist, but you revel in it.
“Fuck,” he groans.
You draw back, lick your lips. Smirk coyly at him from under your eyelashes as you stroke him lightly, one hand still tracing his chest.
“Something the matter?”
Bucky shakes his head and leans one arm against the wall. He’s panting, but he manages a grin all the same. “You and your mouth.”
“Oh, you want my mouth?”
You fall to your knees, cement biting into your knees through your dress, but you don’t care. You tug his zipper down with your teeth and pull his cock free. A fresh wave of want surges through you.
Damn if he doesn’t look like the best snack in the world.
One hand around his base, the other cupping his balls, you draw him into your mouth with a hungry moan. Hot, heavy, perfect; god, there’s that delicious stretch you’d been missing, the taste of him, of Bucky, heady on your tongue.
It’s like your first time together. You on your knees, his hand in your hair, him singing your praises, your mouth around him and your hand cupping your own sex, touching yourself through your dress, desperate for release but too busy tasting him to beg him for more.
It’s like then, but it’s not. Because right now, you’re not lying to him. You’re not fooling him, distracting him. No ulterior motive beyond letting the whole world know how much you want him.
How much he wants you.
No more hiding, no more sneaking, no more looking over your shoulder—it’s all you and him, him and you, the two of you together—
Bucky’s hips are rocking now, seeking you out. Lipstick stains his cock dark in the shadows, but you can’t take your eyes from his face. That beautiful face, a flush across his cheeks and a pinch between his brows. Those beautiful eyes, so dark and full of that thing that neither of you have to hide anymore. His panting echoes in the alley, sweet sounds falling like the first spring rain. Beautiful, vital relief. Your skin prickles, pressure building as you struggle to breathe.
You squeeze the base of his cock as you relax your throat, drawing more of him into your mouth. You hum around him, the vibrations pulling a fresh stream of whimpers from his pretty mouth that makes a fresh rush of want pool between your legs. God, it’s filthy how he’s moaning your name, leaking in your mouth…
“Fuck, yes, f—fuck!” he rasps.
A swirl of your tongue around his head, suction so strong it makes your cheeks hurt, and the lightest squeeze of his balls. Then your hand dances back, teasing his rim, and Bucky shouts his release, spilling down your throat as you swallow hungrily.
You pull back and lick your lips clean, smirking up at him as you lightly graze your clothed breasts. Just a pause, to let him come back to himself. And to bask in his afterglow. Looking at him like he is now, flushed down to his chest and his eyes squeezed shut in bliss, is like looking at God.
It’s not long before Bucky’s eyes open. He tugs you up. His breathing is heavy, but he catches it enough to kiss you long and tender, one hand still buried in your hair. You moan into his mouth, breasts tight against his chest. Can he taste himself on your lips?
You break the kiss with a gasp as Bucky pushes you against the wall. He smirks and starts bunching your dress up around your waist, his body still pressed against yours. The air is cool on your legs, all the more so when your thighs are bared.
Bucky leans his forehead against yours, both of you panting as he grips your thigh, toying with the lace of your holster. He shifts his wrist, his eyes blacker than the hazy sky. His touch between your legs buckles your knees; you’re held up by his chest on yours and his other hand on your waist. His hand slips under your panties.
The merest brush of your clit and the world shudders, all your focus zooming in on that tender touch. You’ve been on the precipice for what feels like hours, and his touch, Bucky’s touch…
It’s everything.
You clutch his arms, chin trembling as you try to hold on. His fingers dip between your folds, circle wet and slick against your clit.
“Let go,” he murmurs. He nuzzles your neck, teeth scraping against your collarbone as he works his magic. His left hand holds you steady against the wall, the concrete scraping your shoulders. “Let go for me.”
He curls one hot finger inside you, and it’s enough to tip you over the edge. A cry tears from your throat as you quake in his hold, sparks shooting through you. He coaxes you through, sweet sounds—full words, perhaps, but you’re too overwhelmed to make them out—falling from his lips as he slows his ministrations.
You ease down from your high as Bucky takes his hand away. He’s gentle, his eyes dark but so damn sweet. They’re the first thing you see when you resurface.
He sucks his fingers clean, smiling all the while, as you steady your breathing. He smooths your skirt back over your legs, zips his fly, buttons his shirt. Your face screws up.
“What, is that all?” you manage.
Bucky’s laugh echoes loud and clear in the alley. He slings his arm around you, squeezing your bum fondly as he leads you away. “Not a chance.”
—
The city twinkles outside of the wide windows of your hotel room. Warm lighting, a queen-size bed that might be a bit snug for Bucky—well, it’s upscale, not platinum; you have a budget, after all—and his suit jacket already hung in the closet. Bucky’s standing in his shirt by the window, on the phone with Hill. Maria Hill, Nick Fury’s right-hand man.
“I ran into an old associate,” he tells her for the third time. His voice is steady, though you can see in the reflection his lips pursing. He’s being just vague enough to keep her suspicious. He’s quiet for a moment as you fill a cup in the bathroom sink.
You wander back into the bedroom, nerves humming. The whole cab ride over, Bucky’s hands had been all over you, light and teasing and just enough to keep you right on edge. And the elevator ride up to the seventh floor had him rutting against you like a dog in heat.
Now he’s putting your patience to the test with his drawn-out call when all you want to do is scream his name. You clench your thighs as you swallow, waiting for him to finish. But he’s still got the phone to his ear.
This won’t do.
You finish your water and lick your lips dry, the taste of your lipstick heavy on your tongue. Is his cock still stained with it? You’re dying to find out. The cup clinks against the dresser, abandoned. Bucky’s eyes meet yours in the window reflection as you wander over to him and lean against his back, circling your arms around his waist to start unbuttoning his shirt for the second time tonight. His lips twitch.
“Hill, listen, I gotta—”
“Not until you explain yourself, Barnes.”
You sink your teeth into his shoulder as you slide your hand inside his pants. He jerks, nearly dropping his phone.
“Fu—Hill, it’s fine, just—”
You palm his cock through his boxer briefs.
“Fuck!” he gasps. He slams his fist against the window, but there’s no swallowing back what’s just come out of his mouth.
Hill’s silent for a moment. Then she laughs. “Oh, I get it. Have fun, James. Don’t forget your paperwork!”
Click.
Bucky twists in your arms with a growl. His phone thumps against the floor as he forces his mouth on yours, bruising. He grips your upper arms and pushes you back until your knees hit the bed. A shove, and you’re falling, lips parted from his onslaught as you bounce on the mattress.
“You little devil.”
The low tenor of his voice sends a shiver through you. Bucky crawls over you, his open shirt brushing your arms as you push it down his shoulders.
“Thought I was your angel,” you murmur.
Bucky sits on his haunches and shrugs off his shirt. You lick your lips as you feast on him with your eyes alone, your fingers light on your breasts. Bucky’s eyes fix on your hands. He sucks in a breath as you squirm, nipples hardening under your dress.
“Whatever you are, you’re divine.”
Bucky stands for just long enough to push his pants and briefs off, barely giving you a chance to see how hard he is. But you see well enough: cock jutting out, thick and heavy. And yes, still painted with traces of your lipstick.
He pushes you further up the bed until your head’s on the pillow, then settles back between your legs. His hands knead your thighs, spread them apart. It’s his turn to lick his lips.
“And I’m going to worship the hell outta you tonight.”
Bucky glides his hands down your skirt. You twist your hands in the blankets, breathing shallow as you watch him. He lifts your leg and presses a kiss to the inside of your ankle, fingers dancing along your shoe.
“Killer shoes, huh?”
You laugh breathlessly, but you can’t answer because he’s kissing his way up the inside of your leg, his hands sliding up your skirt so smoothly that you’re a mess before he’s even reached your thigh holster. Fuck grabbing the blankets; you bury your hands in his hair and pull.
You half expect him to resist, but no, he lets you pull him between your legs, pushing your dress up over your waist. He presses an open-mouthed kiss to the crotch of your panties, his tongue flicking against your clit. You cry out; your hips buck against his face, but he only chuckles, his breath warm against your skin. He peels your panties away, shifting so he can toss them away with the rest of his clothes. You reach for the satin bows on your holsters, but he grabs your hands.
“Safety’s on, leave ‘em,” he says, eyes glinting.
Your eyebrows fly up. “Really?”
He shrugs and tucks his hair behind his ear. “What can I say, watching you at work earlier was a turn-on.” You giggle and run your foot against his side.
“Let me guess, you want me to keep my shoes on too.”
“If it’s comfy.” He winks. “Think you’ll accidentally kill me if I drive you too crazy?”
You nudge at him with the toe of your shoe until he falls back onto you, his cock nestled between you. You twine your arms around his neck and kiss him til you’re out of breath.
“Kill you? Never.” You bump his nose with yours. “Now eat me out, or I might start charging you for my time.”
Bucky laughs out loud. Music to your ears. Then he dives back between your legs, pulling your thighs over his shoulders and settling on his elbows. One last wicked look, and then he latches his mouth to your clit, sucking and flicking and oh god you’re ruined, you’re wrecked. He’s pulling your soul out with his lips. Your hips buck up again, but he stills you with a single warm hand. Sounds fill the room, sounds you barely register as your own moaning.
He’s insatiable. His tongue dipping inside you, fucking you, his metal thumb circling smooth as silk against your clit. His other arm holding you in place so he can devour you, all your whimpers and cries and moans be damned. Your legs are shaking, thighs squeezing his head so tight you’re sure he’s suffocating, but no, he’s just lapping you up, humming, every vibration building you into a tighter frenzy. Sweat beads on your brow, on your chest—you grab hold of his hair, your breasts, the blankets, anything to ground you, but it’s impossible because he’s there, right there, his hips thrusting against the bed as yours strain towards his mouth.
More, more, more; it’s a chant in your mind, on your lips, back arching off the bed as his soaked metal fingers vibrate—
The throes of your orgasm are enough to wake the dead. Bucky lifts his head to watch you come undone, his hand still working on your clit. He lifts his arm from your hips, but by now you’re no more than a pile of mush on the bed, your silky dress sweaty and tight on your body, too much against your sensitive breasts. You twist bonelessly and reach for the zipper.
“Let me,” Bucky murmurs. He slides the zipper down slowly, careful not to let it catch on your skin. Peels the dress down until your arms are free, your breasts free in the open air. A few gentle tugs, and it’s gone, and you’re bare beside him.
Bucky doesn’t touch you, not yet. He hovers next to you, his hands reaching and falling back every second until you look at him and smile.
“C’mere, you,” you mumble. He settles in your open arms, propped on his elbow, his torso stretched across your chest. You brush back his hair and let your eyes drift across his body. Your gaze lands predictably on his cock, still red and hard and lipstick-stained, a bead of precum just at the tip. You take him in hand tenderly, reveling in his quiet hiss. “Poor Bucky. So much time worshipping me he hasn’t had a moment for himself.”
“I mean, you did—fuck, darlin’, just like that—you did suck me off earlier,” he says breathlessly.
You keep stroking him, your hands gentle, rubbing the lipstick stains into new shapes on his skin. Bucky’s tense, every muscle from his neck to his abs to his thick thighs in stark definition as you work along his length.
Bucky tugs your hand away all too soon. He settles between your legs; they’re spread wantonly, heels and lacy holsters an added bonus. His cock is scorching between your legs, sliding slick between your damp folds as he teases you.
“Fun as that is,” he rasps, “I just wanna be inside you already.”
A thrill shoots through you. Bucky rocks his hips gently, teasing, not fast or hard enough to provide relief. You tilt your hips, moaning, anything to spur him on. This dragging out the inevitable is torture.
“Fuck, what are you waiting for?” you gasp.
No warning, no caution—Bucky slams his cock home. Your body arches off the bed as you cry out, tears springing to your squeezed-shut eyes as he sinks deep, so deep it’s just shy of painful. But god, there’s no pleasure in the world better than this. His thick cock in you, his pelvis putting pressure on your clit, stars once again bursting behind your eyes.
Bucky doesn’t give you any time to adjust. His thrusts are fast, long, deep. Your feet scramble for purchase, heels catching on the blanket. A harsh rip as the comforter shreds, but it barely registers.
He notices. He growls, pulling your leg up, still pistoning in and out, pounding you into the bed. With your knee against his chest, he’s hitting all kinds of spots inside you, the ones you’d barely known of before him. Your walls flutter around him, a wail tumbling from your lips—
“Oh god, fuck, Bucky!”
Bucky litters your chest with kisses, alternating between tweaking your nipples and teasing your hypersensitive clit until tears run down your face and all you can do is beg.
“It’s ‘kay, darlin’,” he pants. His pace slows, the long drag of his head tugging at you, pulling fresh sobs from your throat. “Fuck. Look. Look how pretty y’are,” he urges.
You force your eyes open and stare between you. His cock, red and shining from your arousal and his, sliding in and out, your cunt stretched tight around him. You clench the muscles there as he sinks in once more, his prolonged groan enough to make you laugh triumphantly until he rolls you over, his hands strong on your waist as he sits you up, the movement shifting his cock inside you. You hiss and steady yourself with a hand on his chest.
“You seriously expect me to hold myself up? I’ve had two orgasms tonight and you’ve had none,” you tease.
Bucky’s eyes glitter. He rocks his hips up. You can’t move.
“You’re the one who was desperate for more,” he quips. “Prove it.”
“Ugh, fine.”
But you smile as you plant your hands more solidly on his chest, one finger just close enough to trace the scars at his left shoulder. You circle your hips, moving slow and small until he’s clenching his jaw. But he doesn’t beg for more. He just watches you, his hands still on your waist and his eyes black with lust.
The little movements prove your undoing before his, every roll of your hips providing fresh pressure on your clit. You mewl with pleasure as you start to bounce more solidly on his cock, chasing the building pleasure. Every slam has you both gasping. Your nails scrape against his skin, digging in, leaving marks. His hands shift to your breasts, just holding them, rubbing his palms back and forth across your painfully hard nipples. Every shift of his hands, every drop of your hips, every thrust of his send a shower of sparks through you until your whole body is fireworks, starbursts behind your eyes, fire in your blood—
One hard thrust of his hips when you’re not expecting it, one intense burst, and you seize up, shudders racking through you as he holds you up by your chest, walls milking him, eyes unseeing, all of you focused on the pleasure between your legs and the twitching of his cock inside you until he too explodes. He spills inside you, your name falling from his lips, offered up to you like a never-ending prayer as you fall forward to kiss him because you have to, you must.
“Bucky,” you murmur into his mouth. “Bucky.”
Every inch of skin is hot, damp with sweat, but you couldn’t move if the world was on fire. He’s wrapped around you, in more ways than one, and you never want to let him go.
And for the first time, he doesn’t have to go. Whatever his people think of him, they’re leaving him alone. Let the Winter Soldier blow off some steam, they must be thinking, and he’ll be our perfect operative when he gets home.
You smile into the crook of his neck as he strokes your back, your neck, your hair. He is perfect, isn’t he.
It’s a while before either of you have the strength to move. Bucky rolls you off him.
“Stay,” he murmurs. He drops a kiss on your forehead, and you watch his bum as he heads to the bathroom. Your eyes slide shut as you listen to him run the tap, splash water on his face. You don’t hear him come back, but you blink your eyes open again when he settles next to you. He cleans you up with a damp washcloth, tugging your shoes and holsters off as he works.
“There,” he says. He tosses it all off the bed—well, he puts the holstered guns gently on the nightstand—and lies down, pulling you into his arms. You wiggle your toes, stretching out your feet as you snuggle into his side.
Bucky’s quiet, oddly so. Usually he at least says how much he enjoyed himself. He’s never been shy with his words before.
Nerves gnaw at your stomach. What’s the matter with him? You’re not sure how to break the silence, so you let it settle, and wait.
It takes time, but eventually Bucky sighs and kisses your hair.
“It’s real fuckin’ nice that I can stay,” he says quietly.
You nod.
“And…” He swallows. “Were you serious earlier?”
You look up at him with a frown. “About what? I say a lot of stuff, y’know.” He chuckles, but sobers quickly.
“Were you serious about wanting to… be my date?”
The words tumble out of his mouth.
You sit up, heart pounding, and lean over him. His face is cupped in your hands, your eyes are fixed on his, and the whole world is in his hopeful smile. You kiss him, chaste and heartfelt as a ingenue.
“Am I a liar, Mr. Barnes?”
“Not in the usual way,” he answers.
“There we go,” you murmur. You push the damp hair off his forehead. He’s gazing up at you with something past liking, past wonder, past fondness in his eyes. It’s mirrored in yours, whether you acknowledge it or not. Either way, here you are, with him, with everywhere to go. “There we go.”

Now enjoy
Theo knew he was screwed, he was sure, but he could not care less.
***
The first to find out were Tracy and Josh, the three of them were in the living room of the house they shared, and then Theo felt the boughs rise through his esophagus, he tried to get up and run to the bathroom to prevent them from seeing everything and continue to hide the But he ended up stumbling on the carpet, and the fall only boosted the cough even more.
It was a wet cough, with a sickening noise, the petals coming out of his mouth and escaping by the hand above his lips. He heard a sigh coming from behind them and then Tracy made a desperate noise, kneeling beside him, stroking his back with his hands shaking, he saw Josh's feet moving toward the kitchen, running.
After he finished coughing, the blonde sat down, tilting his head back and taking a deep breath, wiping the blood around his mouth with his fingers, Tracy kept stroking his back and then a bottle of water was placed in front of him, he grabbed it and removed the lid, drinking the liquid in desperation. Theo handed the bottle back to Josh as he finished the liquid and then turned to his friends, who were kneeling in front of him.
"How long?" Tracy asked in a shaky voice, Josh nodded as if nodding to the brunette.
"Since the end of the wild hunt," Theo said, his voice still husky.
"Liam, is not it?" Josh stated, worry coming out of his pores just like Tracy, Theo just confirmed.
"I did not think this was happening to supernatural beings," Tracy said, but both Josh and Theo denied.
"It can happen to everyone," Theo let go, feeling the branches dwindle within him, but they were still moving.
The two chimeras kept asking questions and Theo answered them all without problems, but with a sad look on his face.
"You know you can take it from yourself, do not you?" Tracy asked, but then Theo gave her a dirty look. "But you will not."
Theo nodded and the two stared at him incredulously.
"Any doctor could end up noticing the supernatural situation during surgery," the blonde said, but neither of them really believed the words.
"We'll help you, we'll go through this with you, we're a pack after all," Tracy stated with determination and Josh nodded.
"No one can know," Theo said, running his hand over where his lungs met.
"No one will ever know," Josh said forcefully.
Tracy reached out and grabbed their hands, she leaned forward and laid her forehead on Theo, pulling Josh to do the same, Theo smiled wryly, but still accepted the affection of the betas.
- *** -
The next he discovered was Corey, who was now part of the McCall pack.
No one in the pack really knew Tracy and Josh were alive, that Theo had not killed them both, even after the wild hunt. Everyone still believed that the two were dead because of Theo's thirst for power, and it was better that the two of them would be safer.
But then Scott decided to find out where Theo was living "for the protection of the pack" and followed the blonde. Scott, Liam, Mason, Corey, Malia and even Brett were crouched in the middle of a small forest near the house where Theo and his betas lived. The blond parked the car and then stepped in, signaling the six of them to get up and cross the street, Scott taking the first step to knock on the door.
It was Tracy who opened the door, not noticing who was outside before doing it, the girl let out a breathless sigh, just like everyone outside, and then slammed the door shut, causing Scott to knock on the door again with more force. This time it was Theo who opened the door, with an unhappy face and a worried Tracy behind him.
"What do you want?" He asked abruptly, causing Malia to frown.
"She should be dead," Malia said and then Theo rolled her eyes, Tracy snorted at Theo and then gave a wry "thank you, hm."
"Can we come in, Theo?" Scott asked politely and then Theo nodded, still angry, leading the six into the living room.
Tracy had already returned to the living room and was sitting on the same couch as Josh, the pack McCall was still stunned, staring at both of them.
"Theo had killed you," Malia said, pointing to the two of them sitting on the couch.
"Actually Theo never killed us, did not hurt us, it was just a frame so we could escape the dread doctors," Josh said simply, not even drawing attention from the video game he was playing.
At this point Scott felt a little guilty, he knew that Theo had come to Beacon Hills to try to take his place as Alpha, that was good enough to send Theo to hell. One of he biggest reasons Theo was sent to hell was that everything indicated that he had killed his betas and then try to kill him.
"And how did you get money for this house, all that?" Mason asked
"Dread Doctors, they have a lot of money, we just had to steal a little. " Tracy said simple, taking the other control and entering the game, choosing a character and pressing the play.
All eyes turned to Theo, who was staring at the floor calmly, little by little, everyone in Scott's pack felt guilty about Theo's hatred of thinking that he had killed his betas, sending him to hell by something he had not done. Corey feeling the greatest weight of all, because that used to be his pack, Theo used to be his alpha, the three used to be his friends.
"Corey, I need to tell you something," Theo had stated, shortly after Corey learned of the death of the two chimeras, but the chameleon had not cared, ignored it, and then joined Scott's pack. Corey had ignored Theo, had believed in the deaths of Josh and Tracy.
After discovering the truth, the members of Scott's pack then began to leave the house, one by one, Corey getting last.
"I believed in your deaths." Corey stated, causing Theo to raise his head and Tracy and Josh pause the game.
"Everyone should believe, Corey," Tracy said, but Corey noticed the annoying tone in her words.
"Theo tried to tell me, but I did not listen, I hated him for all this time, I helped send him to hell." Corey said with tears streaming into his eyes, he noticed that Theo's jaw had caught "You were my friends, you were my alpha and even then I still ignored it.-
Corey finished the speech when she felt Tracy hugging him, the girl's arms circled her body and then Josh joined in the hug. Theo remained leaning on the couch, still, until he was pulled by the two betas to the embrace, a human cocoon around the chameleon, Corey only uttered an "apology", returning the hug.
As soon as they parted Theo bent forward, he covered his mouth with his hand and tried to flee, but the cough began before he could even run, the blood wet his hand and then the petals stained by the red liquid began to come out of his mouth instead, he bent and continued to cough, the thorny branches ripping at his throat to come out of his mouth. When it was all over, Josh held her body in his hands and Tracy was by his side with a glass of ice water and the pills of painkiller, he looked up to find Wet Corey's eyes focused on him.
"You have that disease," Corey said, his voice worried and a little sore.
Theo nodded, still weak from the coughing crisis.
Tracy pulled Corey and then repeated the speech about no one knowing about them and about Theo's illness, the boy left the house with his heart in his hand and a fake smile. Wrapping himself around Mason and thinking of the pain Raeken should be going through.
***
Then Malia came.
The coyote was angry and Theo made the mistake of trying to calm her, only to be punched in the chest, just above the lungs. He felt the branches advancing even faster and then the blood filled his mouth and he could not stop the cough in time, blood and flowers stained the ground and then Theo could not hear any more as he choked with the petals and sprouts in his throat, the air was fading and he kept coughing until he collapsed, falling face down on the floor, high above the pool of blood.
When he awoke, he was lying in a soft spot, and Malia was staring at him, incredibly, with an empathic expression.
"Hanahaki, huh?" Malia stated, staring at the boy in the face, Theo just nodded, Malia spread her hands with a bottle of water and the painkillers.
"Like you?" Theo asked, lifting the pills before swallowing them with water.
"I've had it," Malia said, and Theo looked at her with a look of doubt.
Theo nodded with an expression of understanding, Malia then stared at him as if to say she wanted to know why Theo was coughing the flowers.
"Liam," he whispered, and then Malia just patted his shoulder, an unreadable expression on her face.
"I'm sorry," Malia said, and Theo nodded sadly.
-Me too.-
And then the others returned to the room, no indication that they had heard what Theo and Malia had just talked about, faces turned to Theo with neutral expressions and Theo just shook his head, as if to say he did not want to talk about it, everyone ignored the subject.
"How did you heal yourself?" Theo asked Malia with concern and doubt a few minutes later.
The petals gradually became whole buds, and Theo knew that by the time these shoots became full blooms, he would die.
"I told her, she loved me back," Malia stated, Theo's expression died and he gave a nervous laugh.
"It looks like I'm really going to die." And then she laughed, Malia did not lose the tears that escaped her blue eyes, and even though she was still torn between hating and forgiving the chimera, her heart gave a painful squeeze.
***
"What do you think of Theo?" Malia blurted out one day, beside a distracted Liam.
"I think he's a complete idiot," Liam said, containing the beating of his heart so Malia would not find out the truth.
The coyote could not really notice the lie, just nodded resignedly and moved away from the boy.
"I tried"
- *** -
Theo managed to hide how much the disease had progressed until the day Mason and Scott appeared in the house, searching for their "advice" in a strange new occurrence in Beacon Hills. He'd been coughing all day, and his lungs were aching and burning like damn hell, the thorns tearing the organ again and again after the healing. Theo tried to stop Tracy from letting the two of them in, but she opened the door anyway.
Josh was sitting on the couch reading some ridiculous book of teenage romance and Theo just threw himself on the other end of the furniture, putting his feet on the lap of the beta, which did not seem to mind either, just used Theo's ankles as a backing for the book and leaned back.
"We need your opinion on a subject." Scott only stated as he entered.
"Hi Scott, good afternoon, how are you?" Theo snapped, only to be struck in the abdomen by a Tracy cushion.
That just seemed to increase the pain, but he ignored it, focusing on the conversation that Mason and Scott were trying to keep. At some point Liam's name was quoted and this seemed to serve as a trigger for the plants growing in his lung, he began to cough with despair, falling forward and vomiting blood and flower buds. Scott let out a surprised and a little desperate noise, and Mason gave a little shriek; the chimera just knelt, while sprouts and more shoots of red roses with thorny stems were released from its lung.
His shirt was full of thorny branches and already large shoots, the red of the blood mingling with the red of the petals, his esophagus being torn and his lungs compressed. When the coughing attack ended Theo raised his head in despair, trying to get as much air as possible into his lungs, as well as someone who had just been rescued from a drowning.
Scott and Mason had the same expression on their face, sorry.
"I do not need the pity of the two of you." The chimera came out with a brusque tone and the voice ripped through the thorns.
"We were just surprised." Scott stated and Theo just gave him a look as if to say "I know surprise and it was not," the alpha sighed. "We're leaving, you're in no condition to worry. Let's go Mason.-
The alpha spoke and Theo ignored the concern in his tone, Scott walked out the door, but Mason kept staring at him, actually staring at the flowers on his T-shirt and floor of his living room. Josh came back with the painkiller pills and the icy water. "Theo did not even notice he had left the room, and Mason just stood there with a confused look on his face until his expression became pure understanding.
"Liam's favorite flowers are red roses," Mason stated, his tone neutral and his brow furrowed.
Theo gave a bitter laugh and let out a "go away Mason" the human start walking, but not before looking back and noticing the desperate look Theo was giving the floor where the sprouts were, Mason followed the look and then noticed that some of the flower were already opening.
- *** -
Stiles and Derek discovered and Theo simply hated it.
The chimera was running shirtless through the reserve, felt the branches ripping his body inside and getting tangled in his ribs, but he don’t give a damn, he was just in the mood to work out a little, it was not like he was to stop living the last days of his life.
He leaned against a tree, gasping for breath, tears burning in his eyes and thorns burning inside him. He felt one of them pierce his heart lightly and then let out a howl full of despair, dropping to his knees on the floor and beginning to vomit open sprouts full of blood and thorny branches accompanied by tears. He did not know how long he was coughing and vomiting the flowers as a light, icy hand settled on his shoulder, but he did not care, he just hoped he could die soon and save himself all that.
The flowers seemed to subside, and soon he leaned back breathlessly in the tree beside him, his vision was blurred and wet, he felt the blood wetting his chin and his neck, and his hand was still on his shoulder. He spat but a little blood and turned in a gasping breath, facing a Stiles with wet, sad eyes and Derek with his arms folded and brows furrowed.
"Uh, hey guys." He tried to act relaxed as he wiped blood on his arm, but neither of them fell into the act.
"How long, Theo?" It was the only thing Stiles asked, and Theo smirked, a scary sight because of the amount of blood covering his teeth.
"Three months." The chimera said, and Stiles raised an eyebrow.
"This is more than anyone else has ever survived," Derek says, as if that were some consolation.
"It does not matter, I'm going to die anyway." Theo just nodded, then tilted his head back in a laugh. "At least I already know that my V.I.P place in hell is stored"
Stiles rolled his eyes and Derek scowled, neither of them commenting on how desperate that laughter had come from his mouth.
- *** -
Lydia's discovery was certainly the least dramatic of all.
He only felt an itch in his throat and coughed, a red rose almost fully bloomed out of his mouth, Lydia gasped and then put her hand to her mouth.
"Oh my God, Theo, I'm sorry," she said, her tone sounding like an old friend, Theo just smirked.
"I don’t care anymore." He shrugged, then cleared his throat.
Lydia needed no lupine senses to notice just how lying that information had been.
- *** -
"Josh" Theo called the brunette, who only replied with an "hm" "When I die you can have my truck"
The two other chimeras stared at Theo with a look of sadness and despair, they knew that the rose was already in an advanced stage of growth, Theo's heart almost crushed by the thorns.
"Uh, okay then" Josh said, smiling as he thought of uses for the backseat of the truck.
"I only have one condition." Theo let go, and Josh turned to him. "You're going to respect my memory instead fucking with Brett Talbot in the backseat of that truck."
Josh turned incredibly red and Tracy began to laugh like crazy, falling off the couch.
"I think I should leave sometimes, spare you from this" Theo said, and then Tracy was at his side, hugging him tightly.
"You're our friend Theo, we'll always be with you," Tracy said determinedly, her face buried in his neck.
"From dusk till dawn." Josh let go, and Tracy agreed with him.
"Together, from dusk to dawn." The girl repeated and Theo managed not to shed tears that threatened to leave.
- *** -
And it was then that the calm ended in the city of Beacon Hills, thanks to Gerard Argent, again.
The McCall pack and the pack of chimeras were battling the hunters. Theo knocked down the hunter in front of him and then noticed another pointing a gun at Scott's back while Scott was distracted struggling, the chimera tried to pretend he did not care, but he knew he was worried. Scott had been his friend even long ago and seeing the alpha die would simply destroy Liam completely. The only thing Theo thought of as he fired at Scott to carry the hail of bullets was that he was going to die anyway.
Liam let out a desperate howl, Scott let out a souring howl and everyone in the pack stared in surprise as the Dunbar knocked down the last hunter who had not fled, the one that shoot at Theo. Scott knelt beside Theo and then everyone in the pack was in a circle around him, Tracy was shaking and Josh was trying to calm her, Brett had a hand on Josh's arm.
Scott and Derek lifted Theo's fallen body off the ground in a hurry.
In the distraction, no one in the pack noticed that a whole rose slid from his lips.
***
Theo remained unconscious when they arrived at Deaton's clinic, only waking up when the druid and Derek began to take the bullets-poisoned-from within.
"Unfortunately, I have no idea what poison this is, I fear I can not cure it." Deaton stated to the pack members and Theo gave a funny laugh.
Tracy was crying and even Josh could not hold on, Liam kept his head down as he pretended not to care what was happening in front of him. Theo laughed, coughing, for a moment the chimera was grateful that no flower could escape his lungs, Derek withdrew the last bullet from his body and the blonde felt that everything around him was spinning hard, the voices of each one in the room seemed to be underwater, he shook his head and then he could hear the still muffled voices. Liam had an incredulous face as he stared at Scott during the dialogue, and Theo had to try to swallow back the rose that threatened to creep up his throat, the chimera rubbed his lips a little and lowered his head.
Theo did not even notice what was happening around him, just lay back on the metal table and closed his eyes, relaxing. The chimera felt the flowers curl up more and more around his heart, but somehow odd, he felt no pain, the venom was blocking the pain.
He woke up with a pair of hands swaying him.
"Theo you can not sleep!" Tracy shouted at her friend, who just grinned, the girl bit her lip with concern and then Theo raised an eyebrow.
"Where's Josh?" Tracy pointed to the outside of the room and then Theo nodded.
Tracy left the room and then came back pulling Josh by the hand, the brunette had a confused face and swollen red lips. Theo would have made a joke if he had not just felt a few thorns rip a piece of his heart and a rose force the way out of its interior. Raeken waited for the two of them to stand beside the stretcher to pull them into a group hug, pressing both against his body, Tracy leaned her head on his right shoulder and Josh on his left shoulder.
"I love you, thank you for being my friends, my pack, my family," Theo says and then the two leave the embrace and look at him with despair.
"Theo, do not say that, we'll find the antidote." Josh says, and Tracy just nods, Theo smiles sadly.
"I'm not going to die for the poison," Theo says and they both widen their eyes.
"No," Tracy said, putting her hand on her sides, her eyes already filled with tears. "No, no, no."
But Theo just pulled the two who were crying back into the embrace, hoping they would be fine when their chest became a garden.
- *** -
The next time Theo woke up, it was Liam who rocked him, Raeken opened his eyes confused, no longer feeling his body from the waist down.
"We're going after the hunters, Mason will stay here with you," Liam said, and Theo smiled sardonically.
"No kiss for goodbye?" Theo asked, and Liam just rolled his eyes.
"Do not be ridiculous, and stay awake until we get back." The beta said, restraining himself to show his dismay at Theo's condition.
It might not seem like it, but Liam loved Theo, he was just afraid of what the chimera would do after finding out about this information. Of course the beta was slow enough not to notice the way Theo was around him, no, Liam just thought Theo would laugh at his face and then turn his back to leave, and that was all Liam did not want.
Theo only opened his lips in a bloody smile as he watched Liam walk out the door.
"Now it's just me and you, man." Mason said from where he was sitting, and Theo sighed.
- *** -
Theo closed his eyes, felt his awareness swimming and swimming. He had already stopped feeling beneath his body thanks to the venom, his arms and torso numb, but he still did not feel any pain other than the one that plagued his chest. The branches and flowers of the rose tightened around his heart and lungs, but he was not feeling any pain, at least he would die in peace.
"Dude, you're not going to die," Mason said, and Theo only let out a few tears with how hopeful the boy seemed to be.
"That's not the truth," Theo said, and then turned to the side, coughing red and bloody roses, Mason's eyes widened and Theo came back to lie down panting, somehow he knew that those were the last roses that would be expelled from within.
"Complete remedies," Mason whispered, his eyes filled with water.
"Tell Liam I would have loved being his stupid," Theo said, feeling Mason hold his hand.
The chimera smiled one last smile before the thorns of the roses took the last beat of his heart, and a bloody petal flowed from his lips at his last breath.

Tracy knew there was something very wrong when she returned to the clinic. Her whole body ached for the fight with the hunters, but no pain matched the one she felt when she visualized the scene in Deaton's office.
Mason was crying, holding Theo's pale, black-veined hand. The chimera had its eyes closed and an expression of extreme calm, its inert body and some roses next to its head. The bottle of antidote trembled in her hands as she handed it to an apologetic Deaton.
"Theo, for God's sake, no." The girl stated as she reached the side of the stretcher, grabbing the other's shoulders and calling by her name "Theo, wake up, come on."
She was only stopped when Josh grabbed her body, but the tears still ran down the hills through her face and fury tore her heart like never before.
"THIS IS YOUR FAULT! She screamed at Liam, sobbing as her sobs swayed in Josh's arms. " IF IT WAS NOT FOR YOU IT WILL BE STILL HERE
"Excuse me, I did not poison him!" Liam shouted, still staring at the chimera's body in disbelief, his heart didn’t seemed to be beating anymore and a sense of emptiness had taken hold of him.
"HE DIDN’T DIE FOR THE POISON, YOU IDIOT!" She cried, tossing a red rose at him.
Josh left the room holding Tracy by the waist, the girl seemed to have stopped fighting and now only cried audibly.
-Hanahaki.- It was the only thing Malia said, before leaving the room, almost every member of the pack followed her while Liam just alternated between facing the rose and Theo's body.
"No, no, no, it can not be true," Liam said desperately, tears coming down from his eyes like a waterfall. "Theo, please do not."
The beta just whispered desperately as it approached the body.
"I love you, I'm sorry, I love you, I love you," Liam whispered with his head glued to the other's chest. "I love you very much, do not die, please, I love you, I should have said it before, I I love you.-
The beta began to sob hard, feeling that there was no more life inside.
"You must live, Theo, you must," Liam whispered through his tears. "You must live, Theo, for me, please I love you."
"You're not the only reason I have to live, you know?" Theo's voice sounded and Liam raised his head faster than he thought possible, his neck prickling.
The beta looked at the other in disbelief, before smiling and sticking his lips to Theo's. Liam's hands were lost in each other's hair as Theo's hands skimmed around his waist, the kiss tasted like blood, but the feeling of love was even greater.
"No, I'm just the biggest one." The beta said, sinking his head into Theo's shoulder. "I love you, I should have said that before."
"I love you too, Liam," Theo said, doing the same and dragging his nose around the neck of the beta.
- *** -
Malia closed the door quietly with a giant smile on her face, ready to reassure Tracy, but stopped halfway, a thought just in her head.
"I should try to talk to Kira"
- *** -
The story of Liam and Theo was complicated, they all knew, but it was a beautiful story from that point on.
As beautiful as the flowers that grew in his heart.

Chapter 21: But They Weren’t Alone
Hour 8
The goodbyes were hard, even for Dan. He smiled at the younger mutants, reminding them to keep practicing their powers. They were mostly all teens or preteens, and all of them had been forced to mature far too quickly, but under the weight of the situation those shells seemed to crack, revealing genuinely sad kids who didn't deserve this.
Then Dan said goodbye to Seth. He wrapped his arms around him and squeezed, muttering “Take care of them.” Seth nodded, the easiest form of sign language there was.
Dan and Phil stood by as the others finished their goodbyes. Emma and Seth clutched each other. “Find a safe place, and once we finish this I’ll find you.”
Then the six of them watched as the others left. Mandy shoved her hands in in her coat pocket. “Jeez Dan, you're like standing by a freezer,” she commented, trying to lighten the mood.
Hour 14
The waiting was torture.
They sat around a fire, so close their legs touched. Every once in a while, Phil would make the fire grow and let it burn down, or Mandy would make a force field appear around them. The fire kept on burning despite the field. According to Mandy, the point of the fields were to keep whoever was inside it safe, like they were in a little bubble. You could not die inside the force field. The catch was that it was directly tied to Mandy’s strength, and eventually, she would collapse from overexertion and the energy field would collapse.
The sun had set early, as it had been doing for a few weeks, maybe months. There was no time, just the rising sun and the setting sun and lots and lots of walking. Day after day, city after city. Fields and forests and hills and dirt, all equally unabiding and unforgiving.
Dan had his crowbar by his side, and Mandy had her bow across her lap, the sheath of arrows over her shoulder. The others had found various makeshift weapons, with PJ wielding a crudely cut walking stick and Johanna holding a small length of rope. Phil and Emma had both refused a weapon.
Hour 18
They all did their best to stay awake. Mandy claimed Eli would strike when she thought their guards were down, but that didn't make the staying awake any more comfortable.
They lay on the ground, looking up at the stars. “Hey Mandy?” Phil asked quietly.
“Hmm?”
“Is she named Eli because it's a gender-neutral name, and she's kind of both genders?”
“She's definitely a girl, trust me on that. But you’re probably right. The thing with the flickering skin… it's her brother's image. And it only happens when she's agitated. Back in camp, it almost never happened. Not until the very end.”
Dan closed his eyes. He remembered back to his extended sleep/coma, where some of Mandy’s memories were shared with him as she kept him in suspended animation. He remembered the girl with the warm skin and dark, wavy hair, smiling lovingly and stirring a mug of something without touching the spoon.
PJ began to snore.
Hour 20
The fire went out in the pit.
Dan and Phil sat up slowly, looking around. Dan kicked PJ gently, muttering a hushed “Get up.”
Mandy loaded her bow, aiming it down the street. Nothing moved.
Hesitantly, Phil lit the fire again. It burned for a moment before going out.
They slowly got up into a crouching position, getting their weapons ready.
A breeze floated by, getting progressively stronger and pushing Dan’s fringe up away from his face. The wind seemed to hiss.
A figure appeared, walking towards them at a mild pace. Mandy aimed her arrow at it, drawing the bowstring back further. As soon as the figure came close enough that they could see her hair, she released the arrow.
It sailed towards the figure, and at the last moment the figure flickered and glitched to the side, continuing to walk forwards. The arrow sailed past.
Mandy was just notching another arrow when Jordan called out “Wait, it’s a-”
“Ahhh!” Phil screamed, and Dan turned around just in time to see Eli pull the knife out from his arm, wiping it on his shirt.
The arrow flew, and Eli glitched out of the way, dodging it like it was nothing. The ground around her feet turned to tar and started traveling up her legs, but she made wind form and blew it backward. Phil was laying next to Dan, panting, and bleeding, mostly bleeding.
Before he knew what he was doing, Dan was on his feet, swinging the crowbar directly at her head. Somehow, she caught it on her knife, stepping in to gain leverage. “Are you going to show me your power now? I'm waiting.”
Dan kicked at her leg and she stumbled back, their weapons falling away from each other. A rope found itself around her neck and was yanked closed, but Eli slammed her elbow into Johanna’s stomach with so much force she let go. Eli slashed with her knife and a cut appeared on Johanna’s forehead, almost immediately beginning to drip blood.
Another arrow flew and Eli glitched to its side again, her body rippling like a faulty video game, the pixels that made up her skin turning pale before going back to their normal color. Her whole body flickered, her brother’s powers her own.
They were on their feet, or kneeling, fighting against her five on one and they were loosing. And she wasn't even using her powers yet.
Jordan tried to send a kick to her ribs, but Eli caught her foot. She yanked her forwards and twisted, flipping Jordan 180 degrees where she landed on the ground with a pained gasp. PJ swung his branch at her, but Eli intercepted with her forearm midswing. The branch broke in half and Eli knocked PJ to the ground, hitting in on the head with the butt of her knife. She stood up straight and was immediately tackled by a blur of brown hair and stained jeans. Mandy pinned her hand with the knife on it to the ground, trying to impale her in the neck with an arrow but Eli shoved her to the side before she could. They rolled on the ground until Eli managed to pin her.
“How do we always end up here?” She threw her knife slightly to the side and slowly forced the arrow from the other girl’s grip, placing it against her sternum. “Don't take one step forward, or I'll kill her,” she ordered.
The five of them were left standing, watching as Eli smiled, lightly scratching Mandy with the point of her own arrow. Eli looked back at them and smiled. “Time to use your power,” she mocked, looking at Dan. “Oh wait. I don't think you have one.”
She began to sink into the ground, the stones beneath her turning to tar. Mandy screamed as the arrow was stabbed into her thigh and yanked out, held back to her throat slick with her own blood.
“Stop it with the tar. Don't think you can fool me.”
They were frozen, stuck in a standstill. No one spoke, no one made a move. Mandy sobbed as her jeans became stained with blood, her eyes red and wet with tears.
“Shh… stop crying. No, shh…”
Mandy managed to halt her sobs, though her body still shook. She glared up at Eli through glassy eyes full of pure hatred. They made eye contact. And then the arrow in her hand turned to red white and blue confetti and for a single moment, all hell broke loose.
Jordan grabbed Eli and slammed her against one of the stone houses with so much force it made a horrible cracking noise. Eli sent out a huge wave of wind that knocked everybody else off of their feet except for Jordan, who stood firm. She punched her, over and over, until her nose looked more than just broken and was spilling blood down the sides of her face and over her lips. Eli shoved her backward, and Mandy grabbed Jordan right as the air pressure dropped and they were without breath. They ran to the others and slid beside them, almost collapsing as a force field formed around all six of them and they could breathe once more.
Eli screamed, attacking the force field with her fists and throwing things at it, howling in rage. Her entire image flickered, and for a moment, Dan could almost make out the full face of a very sickly looking, very angry boy. The pixels that seemed to make up her form flickered and danced with fury as if they were not quite sure which image, which twin, to show.
Inside the force field, Jordan and Mandy panted for breath. Their small group was huddled together, taking up as little space as possible, all bleeding and bruised.
Mandy called out in pain, the bleeding in her thigh slowed, but the agony still there. She would not die in the force field. But if she ran out of strength, the force field would fall, and they would die.
Eli seemed to know this. Her rage subsided as quickly as it had started, and she brushed some hair from her face, sneering. “Fine. You won't last long anyway.”

BORIS KARLOFF COLLECTION (VCI,2 discs, DVD) Released September 2018. Color. $14.99
https://www.vcientertainment.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=1104
Many years ago, when the late great Boris Karloff passed away in February 2,1969, Jim Warren’s and Forrest J Ackerman’s FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMLAND provided two fitting tributes.
One, was issue #56 of FMOF with a beautiful Basil Gogos cover of Karloff as his most famous role.
The other was a paperback by FJA called THE FRANKENSCIENCE MONSTER (Ace,1969, a cover not by Gogos but paperback cover artist Verne Tossey.). At the time, before the ability to google, this was the source for any monster news. Many of us though that Karloff’s final film was a classic of modern cinema, Peter Bogdanovich’s TARGETS (August 1968,Paramount).
However, thanks to Uncle Forry , we found out that 80 plus year old Karloff had signed with producer Luis Enrique Vergara and Azteca Films of Mexico (who in turn had a distribution agreement with Columbia Pictures) for a four-picture deal at a salary of $400,000. The actor could have said no to the projects and easily retired, having a comfortable sum saved up over the years. No one could have blamed him, either, as his lungs were barely functional (due to years of smoking as well as damage from pneumonia he contracted in Italy filming BLACK SABBATH,1963,AIP , leaving him dependent on oxygen tanks to aid his breathing) as well as crippling arthritis that made walking difficult.
Still, as he often said, he wanted to die with his boots on, doing the job he loved if audiences wanted to see him. An example was when he filmed an episode of THE RED SKELTON SHOW (“He Who Steals My Robot Steals Trash” aired September 24,1968, CBS), rather than do the show before the live audience in a wheel chair as rehearsed, he willed himself to walk with the aid of a cane rather than have the people see him so confined.
Thus, the quartet of Mexican horror films were jobs that he readily accepted, feeling fortunate that audiences still wished to see him.
Difficulties for the productions arose when it was discovered that Karloff’s health would not permit him to film in Mexico, and his sequences were shot in a small studio in Santa Monica, California in April/May 1968, while the rest of the films were completed in Mexico, often with a double for the star.
The four films were to be made over a 5-week period, so this extra expense of two crews, duplicating sets, and flying up some of the Mexican cast to work with Karloff must have frayed the already low budgets. Juan Ibáñez directed the Mexican main unit, while cult director Jack Hill (SPIDER BABY,1967, American General) handled the American Karloff unit, as well as contributing to the screenplays.
Hill it seems was hampered because the producer wanted to use an early form of video playback by tying a primitive video camera to the top of the 35mm Mitchells used to film the movie. Jerry Lewis had pioneered the idea and it is now the common practice, but Hill felt that it slowed down his process.
With all these problems somehow the four films were filmed and completed. Karloff did not live to see the release of these films, which seemed to have been held back until 1971 for their limited distributions (Cannon also got around to distribute Karloff’s 1967 Spanish lensed CAULDRON OF BLOOD the same year, which got a wider release in the U.S. than the four Mexican thrillers).
Over the years, the films have been released on various video labels, including MPI and United American budget label, as well as several of the titles getting a DVD release by Fred Olen Ray’s Retromedia label.
VCI has now for the first time put all four films together in an affordable (less than the cost of some single DVD releases) two-disc collection.
The four titles in the collection are
(Disc One)
DANCE OF DEATH (aka HOUSE OF EVIL, SERENADA MACABRA)
TORTURE ZONE (edited version of FEAR CHAMBER)
(Disc Two)
ALIEN TERROR (filmed as THE INCREDIBLE INVASION, Invasión siniestra)
CULT OF THE DEAD (edited version of ISLE OF THE SNAKE PEOPLE, La muerte vivente)
The discs seem to be sourced from the old MPI videos, with the same video generated titles (©1987 by the Parasol Group). The prints of the four movies are a bit dark and sometimes the color is a bit off. The copy of TORTURE ZONE seemed in the worst condition, with several visible splices.
It is a shame that they did not seek out the Retromedia or Elite release of FEAR CHAMBER, as both of those are in the original aspect ratio with sharp picture and color quality, as well as extras such as an audio commentary by Jack Hill and a deleted scene.MPI’s TORTURE ZONE is an edited version of this film ,so all of the nudity Is eliminated .
Only TORTURE ZONE was set in present day, with the rest set at around the turn of the 20th Century. ALIEN TERROR was supposedly the last one filmed, and the only one NOT starring Julissa, giving actress German actress Christa Linder a chance.
The 2.0 Dolby Digital sound for the films is clear with no noticeable loss in quality of dialogue or the sound effects.
There are no extras to the discs, but again, to get these four films together at such a low price, one should not expect any special edition treatment.
While we would all like to get the best possible and most complete versions, certain films have limited audiences and the profitability is to say the least, narrow.
One wonders, for example, if VCI had gone out of their way to get new prints, cleaned up and loaded with extras, would fans shell out $29.95 for each of these films?
DANCE OF DEATH -this film is perhaps the most traditional horror film, with obvious influences of the Roger Corman Poe films. The film even claims to be based upon a Poe story, though none that I am familiar with. original Spanish language credit
Wealthy toymaker Matthais Morteval (Karloff) summons his family to his mansion to discuss how his estate will be divided. Recent murders in the nearby hills has a macabre touch, wherein the victims have had their eyes removed makes Matthais suspect that a member of his family is the killer.
Karloff has an ancestral portrait that looks exactly like him (these old families have strong genes), and Karloff gets to play huge pipe organ. Matthais supposedly suffers a fatal heart attack half way into the film, and shortly thereafter, one by one his greedy relations die. Keeping with the Corman Poe- like feel, the film ends with a huge fire, as Matthais, obviously not dead, plays his final concerto as the walls burn around him. It is quite amazing that the octogenarian actor is working so close to such huge plumes of flames, controlled or not .
Karloff perhaps passed away before being able to loop dialogue, or the final lines were an afterthought , but they are not his voice.
People who dismiss the Karloff Mexican quartet of films have obviously not seen them, as DANCE OF DEATH was quite entertaining.
TORTURE ZONE – (which in the original titles also claimed to be Poe inspired, though I would say more Lovecraft, like Karloff’s own DIE, MONSTER DIE! 1965 ,A.I.P. ). This one is a bit of a mess, no two ways about it. Psychedelic zooms & colors, and jump cut edits do not make this film any more interesting, and indeed, show how little sense the plot has. A living rock is discovered within the depths of the earth. Scientist Karl Mantell (Karloff), who spends much of this film either sitting behind his office desk or behind a lab computer table, discovers that the creature feeds on the blood of young women, particularly those who are frightened. Naturally, our loveable scientist and his staff create a fear chamber to terrorize young women who come seeking employment. The rock (no, no that one) starts to grow tentacles, and only then does Mantell seek to stop it.
Mantell is supposed to be a kindly scientist, but his actions here are in opposition to that appearance. Still, at least, Karloff gets to survive to the end credits. The topless scenes that are edited out of this print were probably shot later, added to try and keep audience attention. Probably one of Karloff’s worst movies, though, as always, he is worth watching. .
Karloff tries to blow up all prints of FEAR CHAMBER .
ALIEN TERROR– Another period piece, this one is another science fiction/horror hybrid. In an 1890s European country, Professor John Mayer (Karloff) is working on a new power source, when a lab accident sends a pulse off into space, attracting the attention of an alien spaceship passing by. The alien comes across a Jack the Ripper style killer and takes over his body. More killings continue as the alien tries to get to the professor’s invention and destroy it. Mayer uses his invention to defeat the killer, and later, when the alien hops into his niece, he uses the machine again to drive it from her. Mayer lets the machine destroy itself and, in the process, burns down his home.
The final shot of the surviving cast members watching the house burn has an obvious Karloff stand in facing away from the camera with hair that looks like it was streaked with shoe polish.
A confusing picture, as if two different scripts were dropped into a blender, yet it held one’s interest and it tried to be original. As mentioned, this was Karloff’s last work in a motion picture.
An alien Spaceship, lit and designed to look like a Dario Argento sequence !
CULT OF THE DEAD – On the island of Korbai, Carl Van Molder (Karloff) is a major plantation owner. A police captain comes to Korbai to try and bring order when it is discovered that voodoo is rampant. This is a much more entertaining film than Karloff’s earlier film VOODOO ISLAND (1957, U.A.), which was one of the only roles I felt the great actor seemed to walk through.
In this film, Karloff seems fully invested in the part and brings his great screen presence to each scene. The voodoo scenes are well staged, though once again at the end of the film, a voice not Karloff’s is used for the line: “I’m dying! “followed by some sputtering coughs. The picture ends with a big explosion as the hero and heroine escape with their lives. This too was an entertaining piece of cinema fluff and does not deserve all the scorn heaped upon it.
To sum up, two of the films (DANCE OF DEATH and CULT OF THE DEAD) I would say are quite entertaining, a third (ALIEN TERROR) is just odd enough to hold your interest with a feeling of “WTF?” throughout and only one (TORTURE ZONE) is close to a complete disaster. Karloff is always giving his all in each work, and for that alone these are well worth seeing.
Are the prints the best? No. However, unless some deep pocket cinema collector seeks out original negatives, gives them a 2 K scan and restores them, and licenses the Elite and Retromedia commentaries, this VCI set will be the best way of getting affordable copies of these final films by the Master of Horror, Boris Karloff.
Recommended for – Karloff completists. Fans of Mexican Horror. Cult films lovers.
