Waypoints, Take 2: POV Shipper
It's been touted and mentioned at length. It has been awaited with immoderate, naïve anticipation. It has been read highlighter in hand, in the hope to discern its true meaning and purpose. It also was the last straw for some people, pushing them out of the fandom when above anticipation and expectations proved somewhat hollow.
To the dismayed and the heartbroken, I say: I hope you do realize this is a) heavily edited and b) published with the substantial contribution of a ghostwriter, handsomely paid to neatly round off the edges and fit this travelogue-cum-memoir in a pre-shaped pitch.
This bloke:
Tumblr media
The dilligent Matt Whyman, novelist. Agony uncle for several UK press and online outlets, specialized in teenage love and relationships' counselling. British Council executive, with several stints abroad under his belt. Part and parcel of a number of public health awareness campaigns sponsored by the UK Government, with a special interest for above teenage love, sexuality and relationships. And established, top-tier ghostwriter.
Among others, on behalf of Billy Connoly, the "Big Yin" himself, proof that the Scottish mafia is discreet, but by no means inexistent (an excellent thing). Ah, Sir Billy Connoly and his New-Zealander wife, Lady Pamela Stephenson, whom he met in 1979, while filming together a sketch for BBC2's Not the Nine O'Clock News. Chemistry took care of itself, because she ditched her recently married husband and moved in with Connoly in 1981. Both (at least nominally: Connoly considers himself an atheist, nowadays) Roman-Catholic and married at the time of getting together, Stephenson divorced in 1984 and Connoly in 1985 from their respective partners and live in marital bliss since 1989. For some reason, I think these tidbits are important, go figure.
Sidenote: if you haven't already, watch (if still available on Netflix, otherwise I implore you to look for it on other platforms) an exceptional French series, Call My Agent. You will not only love the humor, you will educate yourself with the basic ropes of celeb PR.
At face value, I couldn't think of a more appropriate consigliere to deal with the brief that (spare the failed Everest movie project) prompted this book. It is not that difficult to figure out:
Evoke at length the past to offer a modicum of explanation of the present. Mention traumatic relationship with father to explain fear of commitment in a solid, steady relationship.
In the process, pay lip service to the Narrative, but take substantial liberty and a daring stand when discussing the horrific Wentworth episode-that-nobody-could-watch. Express controlled discontent towards TPTB, to have the upper hand while negotiating a possible season 8 (fun fact, it worked)
Conveniently send into oblivion Flukenzie Floozy, Quarantein Hooter's Madonna and any other two letter combo born from the hyperactive imagination of the Queen of Nothing, while respecting ToS of bachelorhood - it's still good for the Sales Department.
Camouflage reality of S&C entity, under a London Blitz-worthy blanket of smoke & mirrors, but allow leaks that could easily pass for creative license or babble. Shippers will get it. Dots will connect, coins will drop. We shall overcome.
Simultaneously, offer a plausible explanation for the above UFO co-star/bro-sis/Ginger Jesus- Mother Mary relationship, primarily to comfort and control Mordor, that Troll Nursery. Say what the hell you want, including something along the lines of My Little Pony Friendship is Magic, but say it LOUDER FOR THOSE SHIPPER PEOPLE IN THE BACK OF THE COACH. They are used to this one step forward/one slap backward tango and by now, few (if any) will budge elsewhere on the fandom spectrum.
Discreetly crush homosexuality rumors, because they are borderline calumny, at this point in time. However, the Data Lounge crowd could make Mordor look like Bora Bora, so the sooner they get bored and move to the next babyface, the better.
Substantially promote MPC and Great Glen Company, consolidating the image of the giving, thoughtful individual, with a creative mind and savvy enough to branch out in lucrative business projects. Extend fan/consumer/client base to a younger demographic.
Pave the way for exit plan. This report will not discuss it, but hints may have been detected. :)
Wow. This is a mouthful. And I have to say Mr. Whyman did a more than decent job of it, even if for a trained eye the seams are showing, at times.
Like this:
Tumblr media
Frazer. You can't make this shit up. This is SRH.
As compared to this (excuse the repetition: the blogger is not lazy - the blogger tries to make a point):
Tumblr media
This is Whyman. This has been probably paid extra for. This is painful to read. This failed.
As for leaks, I've found a good handful. Adding all of them here higgledy-piggledy would be tedious, boring and I am not Miss Marple. But I've noticed that feelings hide in plain sight, usually disguised in a song you whistle or some verse you remember, just to keep you company on the road, a propos of nothing (my foot):
Tumblr media
I don't know what this woman is talking about, you might say. Whatevs. How about this:
Tumblr media
To keep myself sane, I usually rip off a Twix bar or light up a Benson. Others resort to Shakespeare, in lieu of granola bars. The world is a wonderfully diverse place. LOL, don't mind me. I am a dillusional woman, for whom all hope is lost.
Sometimes, this whole pastoral reverie has a Lewis Carroll charm to it (you might want to open this in another tab):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Who is your queen, Sir? Surely not the cheerful woman in leggings, flats and a Playboy T-shirt, huh?
Maybe the key is this childish botanical pun, tucked away at the end of the book:
Tumblr media
Knowing that the P in Psillyosam is silent, as in *urv the Psychologist, we read and we grin:
[P]sillyosam Mushroom. Silly O'Sam. Silly, oh Sam.
Hashtag silly. An apt response to lemon and hugs.
To sum it up on a cheerful note, Waypoints is the 4 S book:
Struggles - Success - (fake) Solitude - (with a clear optic to avoid at all costs) Scandal
I thank you for your time while reading this. I hope it was worth it and yes, I confidently rest my case. Until the next memoir, which I reasonably hope would be vastly different.

I was retching woman says after 3 Vinted top arrives wrapped in a NAPPY and no it isnt clean
A CUSTOMER was horrified after ordering a £3 top from Vinted – only for it to arrive in a ‘poo-filled nappy’. After purchasing the top on the second-hand goods app, the user was disgusted to see the state it arrived in. 3 The black crop top appears to have arrived in a packet of nappies with a dirty one included in the bagCredit: Jampress 3 The £3 Vinted order which arrived in a poo filled nappy leaving the customer horrifiedCredit: Jampress Sharing pictures, the black crop top appears to have arrived in a packet of nappies – with a dirty one included in the bag. The message exchange between buyer and seller was shared on social media, where it has garnered over 10,000 likes. The customer says the top was “absolutely covered in s**t” and called it “disgusting”. They added: “It absolutely stinks I am retching. “I’ve had to throw the top out… “I’ve used Vinted for four years and never once had a problem whatsoever.” [sic] The seller claims they believed they had sent it in a clean nappy and nappy bag “to recycle and repurpose it”, saying it was all they had available to protect the garment in order to post it “ASAP”. They go on to explain: “My husband must have put the used one back in the nappy packaging as we do that so we know when it’s time to stock back up, I am so sorry.” The seller suggests the buyer “cleans, washes and soaks” the tainted top, and offers to pay for dry cleaning. The customer instead opts for a refund. See the gross discovery that left Vinted fan horrified when she bought trousers The exchange horrified Instagram users. One viewer commented: “At this point I’d refund, compensate, delete Vinted and all my social media and book a long holiday to get over this monstrosity.” “Why would you send clothes in a nappy in the first place? Am I missing something here?” another baffled user wrote. Someone else joked: “Crop top or crap top?” “V bad day to have eyes,” quipped another viewer. [sic] Your rights if you have an issue with your Vinted order Vinted customers in the UK have rights under the company’s Buyer Protection policy, which is automatically applied to every order made through Vinted for a fee. This policy includes a refund policy that means customers are entitled to a refund if: Your parcel never arrives Your parcel is damaged in transit Your item is significantly not as described (SNAD) The Vinted Refund Policy unfortunately doesn’t cover items that don’t fit you or don’t suit you. You can still talk to your seller about a return, but it’s their decision whether to accept the return or not. If you need a refund, you need to report the issue within 2 days to request it. Another person added: “I am full convinced these people are not real. Just how?????!!!!!!!” “Nappies are expensive, who the f**k is sending one in a clean one even?!” pointed out one user. Another user called it “biological warfare” while others hoped it was a joke. Shockingly, this isn’t the first time a similar incident has taken place on the app. Earlier this year, Ishan Ali was stumped when the postman knocked on his door and handed him a bag of his least favourite flavour of crisps – cheese and onion. Inside? Some clothes he had ordered on Vinted. Meanwhile other sellers avoid any big surprises, with one listing a £2.80 dress while fully admitting it had been “slightly puked on”. 3 The message exchange between buyer and seller was shared on social media, where it has garnered over 10,000 likesCredit: Jampress Source link via The Novum Times

From Friendship to Fraud: Ghanaian National Arrested for ‘Love Parcel’ Scam in Delhi!
Tumblr media
In a recent development, the Cyber Police Station of the Outer District in Delhi has successfully apprehended an African national known as Big Jos, whose real name is Joseph and who hails from Ghana. This arrest comes in connection to a sophisticated online fraud operation that primarily targeted unsuspecting individuals, particularly lonely or single women. The investigation began following a complaint filed by Babli, a resident of Delhi, who had become a victim of this heartless scam.
Babli's ordeal commenced in July 2023 when she received a seemingly innocuous friend request on her Instagram account from an unknown user who claimed to be a pilot from the United States. Intrigued by this charming stranger, she accepted the request, setting into motion a series of events that would ultimately lead to her financial and emotional distress. Regular conversations and chats on WhatsApp ensued, not just with this enigmatic individual but also with a group of other foreign friends.
As their virtual friendship deepened, the Instagram user made a tantalizing promise to Babli – he would send her a gift parcel, including US dollars. In a shocking turn of events, Babli received an unexpected phone call from a woman purporting to be from the customs department. This caller furnished her with three bank account numbers and insisted that Babli make payments to cover custom duties and other taxes related to the anticipated parcel.

Trusting the individuals she had been communicating with, Babli complied and transferred an astonishing sum of 1.71 lakh rupees to the provided accounts. However, her trust was cruelly betrayed as the alleged individuals promptly vanished from her life, their mobile phones switched off, and the Instagram user erasing their WhatsApp chats. It was then that Babli realized she had fallen prey to an intricate hoax.
Swift and decisive action was taken by the Cyber Police Station in response to Babli's complaint. They registered a case under FIR No. 0063/2023, invoking sections 419, 420, 120B, and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The investigation included comprehensive technical surveillance of the alleged Instagram IDs and WhatsApp numbers, eventually leading to a significant breakthrough.
On September 14, 2023, a raid was executed at Vikas Vihar, Nilothi Extn., Nihal Vihar, Delhi. During this operation, the suspect, Big Jos, also known as Joseph, was apprehended. He is a resident of Ghana, Africa, and had been residing in India without valid visa documents since July 2018. The police also seized the mobile phones used in the commission of the crime during the raid.
As the investigation unfolded, the accused, Big Jos, revealed a chilling modus operandi. He, along with his associates, specialized in fabricating fake profiles of NRIs, particularly US and UK citizens working in esteemed professions such as doctors and pilots, on various social media platforms. Their primary targets were lonely or single women whom they would approach by sending multiple friend requests.
Once the victims accepted these friend requests, the perpetrators would initiate conversations, meticulously cultivating trust. After gaining the victims' confidence, they would dupe them with the promise of sending extravagant gifts via parcels that purportedly required custom clearance. This deceitful ploy would be followed by fake calls from purported customs offices or airports, demanding substantial sums of money as customs duties and other fees to release these fictitious gift parcels.
While the arrest of Big Jos represents a significant breakthrough, the investigation into this heartless scam is still ongoing. Authorities are diligently working to uncover the full extent of the operation and identify any additional perpetrators involved.
In light of this disconcerting case, law enforcement agencies are urging the public, especially those active on social media platforms, to exercise caution when receiving unsolicited friend requests and to remain vigilant about sharing personal information and making financial transactions online.

The arrest of Big Jos serves as a stark reminder of the perils of online scams and underscores the importance of online safety awareness in an increasingly digital world. As technology advances, so do the tactics of cybercriminals, making it crucial for individuals to be well-informed and cautious in their online interactions.
The world of online deception is vast and ever-evolving, with criminals continually devising new tactics to exploit unsuspecting individuals. Among these nefarious schemes, the modus operandi of gifting scams stands as a particularly heartless and cunning approach. These scams prey on trust, emotions, and the innate human desire for connection and generosity. In this blog, we'll shed light on the inner workings of gift scams and provide you with valuable tips on how to protect yourself from falling victim to such treacherous traps.
1. Creation of Fake Profiles
To kick off their deceitful endeavor, scammers begin by crafting intricate personas. They masquerade as successful and well-established individuals, often assuming the roles of doctors, businessmen, or even pilots. These fake profiles serve as their masks in the virtual world, concealing their true intentions.
2. Sending Friend Requests
With their counterfeit identities in place, scammers embark on the next phase of their operation. They send out friend requests across various social media platforms. Their targets? Unsuspecting individuals, particularly those who appear lonely or single. By reaching out, they create the illusion of extending a hand in friendship.
3. Gaining Trust
Once a friend request is accepted, the scammer initiates conversation, slowly weaving a web of trust and companionship. They invest time in building a rapport, ensuring their victim feels comfortable and secure in their online relationship.
4. Promising Expensive Gifts
Now comes the bait – promises of extravagant gifts. Scammers tantalize their victims with dreams of receiving parcels laden with money or luxury items. These pledges are carefully tailored to evoke excitement and happiness, ensnaring their prey further.
5. Fake Calls from Customs
With the victim's emotions and anticipation at their peak, scammers pull out their next deceptive move. They pose as customs officials, making fake phone calls to the victim. They claim that the gift parcels are held up in customs and can only be released upon the payment of custom fees and other charges.
6. Demanding Money
The victim, blinded by anticipation and trust, is then coerced into parting with a substantial sum of money, purportedly to cover these fictitious customs fees and additional charges. The scammers leave no room for negotiation, demanding swift payment.
7. The Disappearing Act
Once the money is transferred, the scammers execute their vanishing act. They abruptly disconnect, turning off their phones and deleting all traces of their previous interactions. The victim is left not only cheated but also heartbroken and devastated.
This nefarious modus operandi preys on the very essence of human nature – trust and the yearning for connection. To shield yourself from such heartless scams, it is imperative to exercise caution and remain vigilant.

Protecting Yourself from Online Scams and Frauds
Be Skeptical of Unsolicited Friend Requests: Refrain from accepting friend requests from unfamiliar or suspicious profiles, especially those with incomplete information.
Verify Identities: Before placing your trust in an online acquaintance, take the time to verify their identity through mutual connections or additional online research.
Limit Personal Information: Guard your personal information zealously. Refrain from sharing sensitive data, such as contact details, addresses, or financial information, online.
Educate Yourself and Others: Stay well-informed about common scams and frauds. Educate your friends and family about potential online risks and how to avoid them.
Double-Check Requests for Money: Never send money to someone you haven't met in person or who requests funds through messages, especially for unclear reasons.
Use Strong Passwords: Bolster the security of your social media accounts by creating robust, unique passwords. Avoid easily guessable options like birthdays or names.
Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Add an extra layer of security to your social media accounts by enabling 2FA to prevent unauthorized access.
Beware of Suspicious Phone Calls: Avoid sharing personal or financial information over the phone, especially when the call is unexpected or from an unknown source.
Verify Official Calls: If someone claims to be from an official organization, independently verify their authenticity by calling the organization using a publicly available number.
Report Suspicious Activity: If you suspect fraudulent activity, promptly report it to your local law enforcement authorities and the relevant online platform. This can prevent others from falling prey to the same scam.
Stay Updated with Security Measures: Regularly update your devices, operating systems, and applications with the latest security patches to mitigate potential vulnerabilities.
Consult Cybersecurity Experts: Seek guidance from cybersecurity professionals or organizations if you have concerns about online safety. They can offer valuable advice on securing your online presence.
By remaining vigilant, exercising caution, and taking proactive measures to safeguard your personal information, you can significantly reduce the risk of falling victim to online frauds and scams. Stay informed, stay safe, and protect yourself from the clutches of digital deception.

UK International Postage Rates
The uk international postage rates are based on the speed of delivery and are a great way to save money on shipping costs. Whether you are sending a small parcel or large parcel, we can help you find the cheapest postage to any destination in the world.
Tumblr media
USPS vs UPS & DHL USPS is one of the most affordable options for UK shipping as their flat rate shipping makes it easy to forecast your cost and delivery timelines. The only downside to using USPS for a UK shipment is that once the package leaves the US, it is transferred to Royal Mail and may take days or weeks to arrive in the UK.
DHL is an internationally-renowned carrier, but it can be a bit pricey for some packages. This is due to some higher fees and a lack of US-based locations compared to other carriers like UPS and FedEx.
Other factors to consider when comparing uk international postage rates include the size and shape of your package, weight, and delivery time. This can make a big difference in the price of your shipments, and it is important to keep this in mind when picking a carrier for your shipping needs.

UPU prohibitions & restrictions As with any international shipping, it is important to check the UPU prohibited and restricted list for your destination country. This can change at short notice and is your responsibility to ensure that you are complying with all restrictions and conditions.

Just an update for anyone ordering anything from the UK right now - our international shipments are fucked. Truly. Royal Mail has been cybercrimed and now all international shipping is basically offline. Last update we got was... around a week ago. There is no indication of when things will resume, it could be days or it could be weeks. RM has actually turned off the ability to even buy international labels, something they never do - so it's not looking good. And items that are already shipped? Depending on how far they got, they may be stuck on this side of the border too. And even if they aren't, all the tracking services are down. Please be a little forgiving of any UK sellers right now. We have no idea whats going on, and places like Etsy aren't doing anything to help the situation. Star Seller is still running unaffected, international orders are still being accepted with no notification for the customer, shipping extensions are still limited to one per order, still relying on tracking info that no longer works, and they are offering no alternative places to buy postage. The UK isn't like some other countries - whilst the RM is now privatised, it is still our only option. If your sending big boxes and/or big quantities then you can maybe use a private courier - some may even be a bit cheaper! But for the majority of us little sellers sending little items (and 'little items' hear includes clothes and notepads and jewellery and anything below the size of a stack of A4) there is literally not alternative. Not hyperbole. There is no other way to send lettermail. The only thing we could do is send it as a parcel - paying around 3x as much to do so.
I'll keep you all updated as much as I can.

GOOD REASONS TO USE A COURIER: BENEFITS AND ADVANTAGES
Tumblr media
You could send it over the mail or hire movers, so why hire a courier?
Service From the Front Door To Door
If you need to send something big, heavy, or fragile but need more time, knowledge, or materials to pack it for the post office or don't like lifting heavy things, you might hire a courier.
A courier will go above and beyond to provide complete door-to-door service. This means that they will pack your items safely for transport and do all the heavy lifting.
If you have large items that can't be packaged because of their size or don't need to be if a courier sends them, your local courier will take care of them too. You won't have to use paper and tape to protect them from the rough handling of the postal service.
A suitable courier will also be willing to take heavy or fragile items to the exact spot where they are needed at the destination address, not just leave them at the door.
Safety From Loss or Theft
Because a courier gives you door-to-door service that you can track and identify, there is no chance that a bad postal worker will steal your valuables while they are in transit.
Also, it's almost impossible for couriered items to get lost or mixed up in the system, which has happened to parcels and caused delivery delays of days, weeks, or even months.
Because courier service is inherently safer, you will also get insurance on the declared value of your shipment as a standard service that is included in the price.
Service Speed
Most of the time, a courier service is faster than the mail, and same-day options are available for people who need them. Even first-class mail will be delivered the next business day if it is kept from the post office before the last pickup time.
You can use a courier when you need to get things done quickly. Some examples of transportation jobs that need to be done quickly are:
Getting papers from point A to point B in time for a court date or filing deadline
Making sure you meet a deadline for transferring deeds or other documents in a real estate transaction
Getting someone their medicine which needs it but has run out or left it behind
Getting the things needed for an event or exhibition to the event on time
Being Able to Handle Packages That Are Too Big Or Heavy For The Postal Service
Currently, the 24-7 Couriers website says that you can only send packages that weigh up to 30 kg or are longer or more profound than 1.5 metres.
So, heavier or bigger things will need to be shipped differently. If you need more time or the right car to drive the items yourself, it makes sense to hire a professional courier.
Avoiding Damage by Being Careful And Only Touching It A Little Bit
Another benefit of sending things by courier is that a dedicated courier will treat your stuff with the utmost care. They will only be moved around or put down as many times as they would be if they were sent by mail. They are also very unlikely to fall or get crushed by something heavy.
This combination of care and limited handling ensures that your items arrive in the best possible condition, just as they were when you sent them.
Cost-Effectiveness As A Whole
There are a few reasons why using a courier may be cheaper overall than other ways to get something from one place to another. These things are:
 1.     The less chance that valuable things will get broken
2.     Less time spent filing and following up on insurance claims
3.     Less time and money spent replacing or fixing broken things
4.     Less time and money are spent on replacing lost or stolen things.
Avoiding Operational Downtime When Items Are Needed At The Destination Address For A Mission-Critical Purpose
If you need to ship something that's too big or heavy for the post office but not quite heavy enough to warrant its own delivery truck, this is a more cost-effective alternative to hiring a full-service moving firm.
24-7 Couriers is the largest courier company in the UK. They offer express, on-time pickup and delivery services in the UK and Europe. Every phone call is answered in 30 seconds or less. 24-7 Couriers is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and every day of the year.
Call us at 033 022 33 118 or email [email protected] for all your UK courier needs. We are excited to help you!

Delivery driver wouldn’t walk up small flight of stairs to deliver items, so I made him walk further.
I’m in the UK and live in a small block of flats so most delivery drivers cba to walk up the stairs to drop things at front doors so they just dump them in the stair well.
I totally get it’s a pain but we keep getting stuff stolen as anyone walking past can grab stuff, so there’s a big sign asking people not to leave items there as it’s not safe/ secure.
So there’s the same driver from one company that just dumps the items there regardless (they have to take pictures to prove it got delivered and in the back of the photo you can even see the sign saying please don’t leave them there).
So anyway the petty part is I can choose to get items delivered to my home or to a local store for collection, so I’ve now started doing sending them to a store I shop in weekly.
It’s the same driver (the app says who was driving for them to be rated) but instead of a short flight of stairs, he now needs to find somewhere to park, go to a good ins area, go through the faff of booking in a parcel with an actual person that’ll take way longer and more energy than climbing a flight of stairs.
It’s petty but a) Fuck him and b) my parcels are no longer are at risk of being stolen.
TLDR - made a delivery guy walk even futher after he wouldn’t deliver to the door and parcels were getting stolen.

visual impairment in the uk in the early 20th century preliminary research
so it's july, disabilities pride month, i'm researching for watlcitf (1910s ireland au), and i figured i should share what i'm looking at.
(the title for this post is so incredibly specific but that's because most research is. my previous post for watlcitf was like, 2k words exclusively going through census data for one census and one county in ireland. i named maybe twenty characters.)
anyway, disclaimers out of the way, tagging @foxstride because i think they'll be interested in this, let's get started.
unlike last time, i have a specific research goal: to determine what jay's life, as a blind person, would be in the uk (specifically, ireland) in the early 20th century (specifcally, 1900-1914), given that he's from a well-off family.
so i have the benefit of being a bit more focused.
unfortunately, i don't have a great backlog of information. i can't just pull up the national archives and start going through census data. that's alright, what else is research for?
i'm going to try to keep to things that are broadly accessible, but if i can't find things on the internet, i will be turning to my university's library resources.
getting my footing
so after checking that the obvious search (various combinations of the keywords form the title) didn't pull up anything particularly useful, i started going after disabilities in general in early 20th century england.
(i know i'm not set in england, but i also know that i can find broad coverage of information about the uk by starting my research in england.)
before i do that, thoough, we did have britannica's history of the blind, something i found fairly unhelpful. i already know braille was around by the 1910s, and then for some reason it tailspins into the us, which is exceptionally unhelpful.
(an interesting story might be sending jay abroad for a better education, but this is not that particular historical au.)
anyway, as per usual, britannica told me a lot of what i already knew and didn't offer any good leads to new information. (i draw the line at buying books for a fanfic. this is a one-shot. i am going to have written more about my research for it than the actual fic. sigh.)
so next up: historical england's a history of disability, which covers a wonderfully long time range, making it good for anyone from the middle ages to the recent past.
i jumped straight to disability in the 19th century, because their 20th century starts covering 1914 and on.
for those following along at home, the 4 headings in the sidebar are clickable links to articles with more information.
i know jay is going to be living at home, so while i did skim through the section on asylums and workhouses, neither of those are applicable here. we're skipping straight to the daily life of disabled people.
since about 50 years pass between the main time period of this article and my time period, i'm not sure how much i can rely on the attitudes section, but jumping off places.
some key quotes:
"These were the ambivalent Victorian attitudes towards disability - a combination of fear, pity, discomfort and an idea of divine judgement."
"Henry Fawcett (1833-1884), blinded as a young man, became Postmaster-General in 1880; he introduced the parcel post and the postal order."
"In 1838 the London Society for Teaching the Blind to Read was formed and in 1866 the Worcester College for the Blind ('for the blind sons of gentlemen') became the world's first further education provision for disabled people."
"In 1868 the British and Foreign Blind Association was formed by Dr Thomas Armitage, initially to promote the use of braille. It was to become the Royal National Institute for the Blind."
"In 1894 the first branch of the Guild of the Brave Poor Things (motto: 'Happy in My Lot') was formed as a self-help group for people with physical disabilities. They described themselves as a group to "make life sweet for the blind and crippled folk of all ages"."
so great! that gives me a good number of jumping off places. nothing ideal, but it's a start.
henry fawcett
seems like a good enough start. researching attitudes won't help me entirely, here, mostly in that i'll be better off starting with other things and seeing what i pick up.
well according to wikipedia, he was blinded as an adult while he was already in education.
that's incredibly frustrating.
moving on.
royal national institude for the blind
as i know this exists, i figured it's as good a place to start as any.
sticking with wikipedia, because frankly, sticking with wikipedia is as good a place to start as any, we're on the wikipedia page for royal national institute of blind people
wikipedia's history summary was saddening.
moving on.
rnib's history page is next up on the list.
well, the first key takeaway is the adoptation of a braille magazine ("progress") and braille contractions. i'm not doing an overview of braille here, because these research posts are primarly for my own benefit, and i'm comfortable with my understanding of braille as it stands.
alright, i'm frustratingly limited in what i've learned, but i'm making progress.
the white cane
i took a bit of a change of course. we went back to the drawing board: literally just googling "history of blind people" in vain hope but lo! i actually stumbled upon something.
a list of facts about the white cane lead me to the wikipedia page for the white cane lead me to an archived web link about the history of orientation and mobility and good lord! have i finally started getting somewhere.
this is entirely focused around the us, and i'm not going to type up a summary here as it's quite long.
that said, it's alltogether helpful. the biggest takeaway is that mobility was taught by individual teachers going home to home. exceptionally helpful tidbit, that is.
the thing with historical research is that there are things that feel like reasonable assumptions to make often aren't, so i feel quite happy in that knowledge.
to the specifics: ireland
alright, while i'm mostly unsatisfied with what i've done, i want to move on. i have a feeling that i'm going to need to revisit this. i actually just changed the title to preliminary research to account for this.
sigh.
so we've moved to the history of ncbi, the national council for the blind of ireland.
they were founded in 1931, meaning that my instinct to start in england was correct, but still. their history page confirms that home teaching is the big thing at the start.
summary and moving on
okay so i went to do some research into the history of education in the england (the status of ireland vs england is at the moment Complex, but suffice to say that for most purposes i'm searching for english history) to see if i could find any sort of wrap-up about home tutors vs schools, and.
lo.
i found something fairly useful. it's an elemetary education act for blind and deaf children, which, like, god. so useful.
laws are just. good ways of establishing the general outlook of a time period.
so.
unfortunately.
it does not apply to ireland and scotland, and yes, i do have to do research into the history of education in ireland, but i feel i have hit some kind of nebulous conclusion.
because this is half research notes and half helpful information for others (if anyone else needs this kind of specific information), i'll try to summarize here
schools were possibly able to handle blind students. by "handle" i mostly mean "provide a seat and something resembling education", but that's better than nothing.
most mobility, braille, etc., skills seem to be taught by instructors going home to home
thanks to the relatively low traffic, population density, etc., blind people seem to have a decent amount of mobility
that's all for now. my skills in research are not historical research, so i can't promise that like. i have the best critical thinking skills here. etc. etc.
