In a recent development, the Cyber Police Station of the Outer District in Delhi has successfully apprehended an African national known as Big Jos, whose real name is Joseph and who hails from Ghana. This arrest comes in connection to a sophisticated online fraud operation that primarily targeted unsuspecting individuals, particularly lonely or single women. The investigation began following a complaint filed by Babli, a resident of Delhi, who had become a victim of this heartless scam.

Babli's ordeal commenced in July 2023 when she received a seemingly innocuous friend request on her Instagram account from an unknown user who claimed to be a pilot from the United States. Intrigued by this charming stranger, she accepted the request, setting into motion a series of events that would ultimately lead to her financial and emotional distress. Regular conversations and chats on WhatsApp ensued, not just with this enigmatic individual but also with a group of other foreign friends.

As their virtual friendship deepened, the Instagram user made a tantalizing promise to Babli – he would send her a gift parcel, including US dollars. In a shocking turn of events, Babli received an unexpected phone call from a woman purporting to be from the customs department. This caller furnished her with three bank account numbers and insisted that Babli make payments to cover custom duties and other taxes related to the anticipated parcel.

It was then that Babli realized she had fallen prey to an intricate hoax.

They registered a case under FIR No. 0063/2023, invoking sections 419, 420, 120B, and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The investigation included comprehensive technical surveillance of the alleged Instagram IDs and WhatsApp numbers, eventually leading to a significant breakthrough.

On September 14, 2023, a raid was executed at Vikas Vihar, Nilothi Extn., Nihal Vihar, Delhi. During this operation, the suspect, Big Jos, also known as Joseph, was apprehended. He is a resident of Ghana, Africa, and had been residing in India without valid visa documents since July 2018. The police also seized the mobile phones used in the commission of the crime during the raid.

Royal Mail has been cybercrimed and now all international shipping is basically offline. Last update we got was... around a week ago. There is no indication of when things will resume, it could be days or it could be weeks. RM has actually turned off the ability to even buy international labels, something they never do - so it's not looking good. And items that are already shipped? Depending on how far they got, they may be stuck on this side of the border too. And even if they aren't, all the tracking services are down. Please be a little forgiving of any UK sellers right now. We have no idea whats going on, and places like Etsy aren't doing anything to help the situation. Star Seller is still running unaffected, international orders are still being accepted with no notification for the customer, shipping extensions are still limited to one per order, still relying on tracking info that no longer works, and they are offering no alternative places to buy postage. The UK isn't like some other countries - whilst the RM is now privatised, it is still our only option. If your sending big boxes and/or big quantities then you can maybe use a private courier - some may even be a bit cheaper! But for the majority of us little sellers sending little items (and 'little items' hear includes clothes and notepads and jewellery and anything below the size of a stack of A4) there is literally not alternative. Not hyperbole. There is no other way to send lettermail. The only thing we could do is send it as a parcel - paying around 3x as much to do so.

Delivery driver wouldn’t walk up small flight of stairs to deliver items, so I made him walk further.

I’m in the UK and live in a small block of flats so most delivery drivers cba to walk up the stairs to drop things at front doors so they just dump them in the stair well.

I totally get it’s a pain but we keep getting stuff stolen as anyone walking past can grab stuff, so there’s a big sign asking people not to leave items there as it’s not safe/ secure.

So there’s the same driver from one company that just dumps the items there regardless (they have to take pictures to prove it got delivered and in the back of the photo you can even see the sign saying please don’t leave them there).

So anyway the petty part is I can choose to get items delivered to my home or to a local store for collection, so I’ve now started doing sending them to a store I shop in weekly.

It’s the same driver (the app says who was driving for them to be rated) but instead of a short flight of stairs, he now needs to find somewhere to park, go to a good ins area, go through the faff of booking in a parcel with an actual person that’ll take way longer and more energy than climbing a flight of stairs.

It’s petty but a) Fuck him and b) my parcels are no longer are at risk of being stolen.

TLDR - made a delivery guy walk even futher after he wouldn’t deliver to the door and parcels were getting stolen.

visual impairment in the uk in the early 20th century preliminary research

so it's july, disabilities pride month, i'm researching for watlcitf (1910s ireland au), and i figured i should share what i'm looking at.

(the title for this post is so incredibly specific but that's because most research is. my previous post for watlcitf was like, 2k words exclusively going through census data for one census and one county in ireland. i named maybe twenty characters.)

anyway, disclaimers out of the way, tagging @foxstride because i think they'll be interested in this, let's get started.

unlike last time, i have a specific research goal: to determine what jay's life, as a blind person, would be in the uk (specifically, ireland) in the early 20th century (specifcally, 1900-1914), given that he's from a well-off family.

so i have the benefit of being a bit more focused.

unfortunately, i don't have a great backlog of information. i can't just pull up the national archives and start going through census data. that's alright, what else is research for?

i'm going to try to keep to things that are broadly accessible, but if i can't find things on the internet, i will be turning to my university's library resources.

getting my footing

so after checking that the obvious search (various combinations of the keywords form the title) didn't pull up anything particularly useful, i started going after disabilities in general in early 20th century england.

(i know i'm not set in england, but i also know that i can find broad coverage of information about the uk by starting my research in england.)

before i do that, thoough, we did have britannica's history of the blind, something i found fairly unhelpful. i already know braille was around by the 1910s, and then for some reason it tailspins into the us, which is exceptionally unhelpful.

(an interesting story might be sending jay abroad for a better education, but this is not that particular historical au.)

anyway, as per usual, britannica told me a lot of what i already knew and didn't offer any good leads to new information. (i draw the line at buying books for a fanfic. this is a one-shot. i am going to have written more about my research for it than the actual fic. sigh.)

so next up: historical england's a history of disability, which covers a wonderfully long time range, making it good for anyone from the middle ages to the recent past.

i jumped straight to disability in the 19th century, because their 20th century starts covering 1914 and on.

for those following along at home, the 4 headings in the sidebar are clickable links to articles with more information.

i know jay is going to be living at home, so while i did skim through the section on asylums and workhouses, neither of those are applicable here. we're skipping straight to the daily life of disabled people.

since about 50 years pass between the main time period of this article and my time period, i'm not sure how much i can rely on the attitudes section, but jumping off places.

well, the first key takeaway is the adoptation of a braille magazine ("progress") and braille contractions. i'm not doing an overview of braille here, because these research posts are primarly for my own benefit, and i'm comfortable with my understanding of braille as it stands.

alright, i'm frustratingly limited in what i've learned, but i'm making progress.

the white cane

i took a bit of a change of course. we went back to the drawing board: literally just googling "history of blind people" in vain hope but lo! i actually stumbled upon something.

a list of facts about the white cane lead me to the wikipedia page for the white cane lead me to an archived web link about the history of orientation and mobility and good lord! have i finally started getting somewhere.

this is entirely focused around the us, and i'm not going to type up a summary here as it's quite long.

that said, it's alltogether helpful. the biggest takeaway is that mobility was taught by individual teachers going home to home. exceptionally helpful tidbit, that is.

the thing with historical research is that there are things that feel like reasonable assumptions to make often aren't, so i feel quite happy in that knowledge.

to the specifics: ireland

alright, while i'm mostly unsatisfied with what i've done, i want to move on. i have a feeling that i'm going to need to revisit this. i actually just changed the title to preliminary research to account for this.

so we've moved to the history of ncbi, the national council for the blind of ireland.

they were founded in 1931, meaning that my instinct to start in england was correct, but still. their history page confirms that home teaching is the big thing at the start.

okay so i went to do some research into the history of education in the england (the status of ireland vs england is at the moment Complex, but suffice to say that for most purposes i'm searching for english history) to see if i could find any sort of wrap-up about home tutors vs schools, and.

lo.

i found something fairly useful. it's an elemetary education act for blind and deaf children, which, like, god. so useful.

laws are just. good ways of establishing the general outlook of a time period.

so.

unfortunately.

it does not apply to ireland and scotland, and yes, i do have to do research into the history of education in ireland, but i feel i have hit some kind of nebulous conclusion.

because this is half research notes and half helpful information for others (if anyone else needs this kind of specific information), i'll try to summarize here

schools were possibly able to handle blind students. by "handle" i mostly mean "provide a seat and something resembling education", but that's better than nothing.

most mobility, braille, etc., skills seem to be taught by instructors going home to home

thanks to the relatively low traffic, population density, etc., blind people seem to have a decent amount of mobility

that's all for now. my skills in research are not historical research, so i can't promise that like. i have the best critical thinking skills here. etc. etc.

Pekoe

There is perhaps nothing cozier than tea and cats. Pekoe puts the player in the shoes of the newest resident and teahouse owner in a town of sentient cats. The cats want your tea, and you can learn to make it for them, learning about different tea varieties and tea making styles as you go while building relationships with the town’s inhabitants. You can upgrade and customize your teahouse, visit other teahouses for inspiration, and learn about different rituals, customs, and preparation styles for tea. Pekoe is developed by (appropriately) Kitten Cup Studio, and is planned for release in 2022.

Bear and Breakfast

Build and run a bed and breakfast in a tranquil wood...but also, you’re a bear! Startout with a rundown old inn, and build it up into splendor again while attracting and awing tourists who come to stay. Bear and Breakfast is a laidback management sim about growing a cozy woodland business, but with the added bonus of a forest mystery that unravels as your bustling breakfast nook grows. Developed by Gummy Cat, and planned for release later this year.

Behind the Frame: The Finest Scenery

Behind the Frame follows an artist living alone, preparing a masterpiece for a gallery submission. It’s a puzzle game focused on both her day to day activities, her interactions with a fellow painter and neighbor (and his cat!), and painting itself. You’ll use a painting and sketch mechanic to solve puzzles that explore memory and emotion, all of which takes place in a hand-animated world that looks like it was pulled straight out of a Ghibli movie. Developed by Akupara Games.

Bird Problems

There are a lot of unique ideas for non-violent games and mechanics out there, but one I had personally never seen before was modeling a game after a sitcom. Bird Problems follows a young bird named Tweeter Gregory who’s clumsy and awkward, but just wants to make friends and enjoy a nice boba tea. We haven’t seen much of this game from Lithic Entertainment just yet, but its trailer at the Wholesome Direct stood out due to its resemblance to the goofy sitcoms of the 90s. But with birds!

A Little to the Left

Many of the non-violent games shown over the recent E3 weeks were narrative-focused, but sometimes all you want is a pleasant little puzzle game. A Little to the Left is less complicated, and in that way seems straightforward and soothing: it’s about reorganizing, tidying up, and setting things right. You’ll spend it arranging objects into patterns that look pleasant, with occasional “help” from a mischievous interrupting cat. Developed by Max Inferno, it’s planned for launch this October.

Forza Horizon 5

If you know what Forza Horizon is, you’re likely already looking forward to this one and/or have pre-ordered it/subscribed to Xbox Game Pass. For those who don’t, here’s a quick crash course (pun absolutely not intended): Developed by UK studio Playground Games, Horizon is the open-world spin-off series from Microsoft’s acclaimed Forza Motorsport franchise. While Motorsport focuses on simulation racing, Horizon offers a slightly more arcade-like experience, letting players loose behind the wheels of some of the world’s most powerful cars. You explore the landscape (Mexico, this time) to find more race locations or other ways to raise your Influence. Doing so unlocks the Top Gear-esque showstopper challenge. New to the mix are Expeditions, which take you on guided tours of the most beautiful places of the map, and Horizon Arcade, which lets you create your own tracks, stunts and races. Forza Horizon 5 is due for release on November 9th.

Sable

This indie sci-fi exploration game has been in the works for several years, but it’s finally approaching release. Set on a desert planet, you play a young woman from a nomadic tribe sent on a ritualistic quest to explore the world - on a hoverbike. Akin to Luke Skywalker’s landspeeder, or more accurately the giant USB dongle Rey drove in The Force Awakens, your task is to discover more about the world as you learn more about yourself. Investigating the wreckage of old ships will help you find the components you need to upgrade your bike, and as you meet other tribes, you can complete side quests to help them and forge new friendships. Developed by Shedworks, Sable will be available from September 23rd.

Phantom Abyss

This game has a bit of an Indiana Jones meets Mirror's Edge kind of vibe. Players race through ancient temples, leaping chasms and dodging booby traps, in the hopes of being the first to reach the relic at the centre. You don't technically compete with other players in real time; instead, you race their ghosts, following their leads and learning from their mistakes. Each temple is randomly generated, but as soon as someone claims the relic, they are declared champion of that particular temple and the course is removed forever, cementing their victory. And yes, you have an Indy-style whip to swing across gaps. It’s developed by Team WIBY and launched in Early Access last week.

Lake

Most video game stories present the player with world-ending stakes, sending them on an urgent quest where the clock is always ticking. Lake is a much more personal and relaxed affair. Set in 1986, you take on the role of Meredith Weiss, a forty-something career woman taking a break ahead of her software company’s big launch. She heads back to the fictional lakeside town of Providence Oaks, Oregon, her childhood home, to rediscover old friends and see what (if anything) has changed. She also takes on her father’s role as a mail carrier, delivering letters and parcels each day while he is on holiday. During the two weeks, she can forge friendships, find love, or even choose to give up her career and make a new home for herself - the choice is up to you. Lake is developed by Gamious and is due for release by the end of the year.

Schim

This 3D puzzle platformer has a simple but wonderfully creative premise: jumping between shadows. You control a schim: the soul of a living creature or object. This particular schim has become separated from the human being it was attached to, and it’s up to you to reunite them. You can hop between shadows as if they were pools of water, and if a shadow is moving (for example, the shadow of someone walking about or a bird flying) that pool will move and take you with it. Working out the best route between shadows is the only way to navigate each level, set across various urban and rural spaces. Timing is the key, because as soon as you leap out of a shadow and land in the light, it’s game over. As you can see, all of this is presented in a beautifully distinct style. Schim is being developed by Ewould van der Werf, although a release window has yet to be decided.

This is probably a very boring post mainly about … shipping (the, like, parcels kind, not the fandom kind), but as I’ve bought quite a bit (…lol) of D&P merch in recent years, I thought I’d talk about it.

I’ve been having some shipping woes re. D&P merch for quite a long time now, and emailed IRL about it about a week ago … I wasn’t sure they were going to reply but they did today and have been very helpful (as much as they can be). The main issue is that they often use a courier/mail service called DPD to ship items to me, but not *all* the time; sometimes they use regular Royal Mail. The regular-mail items either come in 3 days or, like, 2 weeks, no in-between. DPD are … I will generously say inconsistent. (And it’s not just this year because of The Situation, this has been the case since like 2018.) When everything goes smoothly they’re great, pretty fast, good tracking. Sometimes stuff even arrives early.

Buuuut the DPD parcels have an issue where they’re *constantly* being returned to sender when they get to DPD’s depot… it’s not every single time, and it isn’t when the parcel is over a certain weight or cost; my big Xmas one last year came by them a day early, 2 days before Christmas which was very  impressive, but my one (1) shirt I bought recently got returned. The Phil quiz prizes got returned. A bunch of other stuff last year got returned. I messaged IRL and asked them if they could send by normal post (which is cheaper, I’m pretty sure) and then when they did, they got here just fine; the Phil autumn merch was sent by normal post without me asking, so I don’t know what the criteria is. Maybe a contract with DPD for good prices? Hell if I know.

It’s not IRL’s fault, entirely; it’s more that Fulfilment Crowd, their, er, fulfilment company, use DPD sometimes for whatever reason and evidently don’t fill out the paperwork right, or something? (I had one returned last year and when it arrived after having been re-sent by DPD again there was a stack of papers on the front about 10 pages thick, all e-signed by Martyn; I don’t know what DPD want exactly in terms of details for international shipment but I think it must be a Lot. I used to fill out waybills for DHL as part of my job so I know some companies do want a lot of detail for customs reasons, and even one ticky box not being filled out can hold up a package)

Speaking of DHL - there have been delays getting the weighted blankets shipped to the UK (did not know they were coming from the US, interesting) for dispatch, so they’re going to ship it to me from the US instead by DHL, probably next week. (I didn’t ask about that, they’re not even due to start shipping for several more days, they just told me about it when I queried the other orders that had been returned to sender.) Which, given the weight and size, must be costing them a small fortune, especially as they must have quite a few to ship to people.

I’m sure they don’t want to have to ship everything twice anyway, it costs them money even if it isn’t a lot to ship one shirt; they’re going to send the winter collection stuff I ordered by normal mail if possible. They mentioned that they could request the warehouse not use DPD but there was no guarantee, so I think FC might be a bit of a law unto themselves, lol.

Anyway, yeah, this is nothing to do specifically with this year when we all know postal services are stretched to breaking point - everything still arrives in reasonably good time given the circumstances (although for some reason my Phil merch specifically always takes an absolute age) - it’s just, I dunno, progress maybe? In escaping DPD hell? Here’s hoping lol.

Aaaaaaahh look what I’ve goooot!!

Okay so it’s been a fairly shitty and stressful couple of days here at chez Alipeeps cos the river behind my house flooded massively due to storms on Sunday (surpassing the previous highest ever recorded level for the river - which was 4 years ago when my cellar and kitchen were flooded!) and, you guessed it, my cellar and kitchen were flooded!

It’s all a complete mess and although we are getting sorted and have power back on and should have the heating fixed tomorrow, it’s been horrendous and it’s going to take months to dry out, rip out and refit my kitchen (again).

So I am not having the best time.

Which is why it’s all the more awesome that I got a parcel from Singapore today!!

I saw a post on here a few weeks ago squeeing all about these awesome CQL/MDZS-themed seals and waxes which were being sold on Taobao and they looked sooo gorgeous and when I worked out the exchange rate they were actually really reasonable in price! So I decided to treat myself... and with some help from the very lovely @stebeee​ to negotiate the website and set up an account, I put these all in my basket and went to checkout... only to find at that point that they don’t ship to the UK. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhh!

Which is where Stebee went above and beyond and, like the absolute legend she is, very kindly offered to let me order them to be shipped to her in Singapore and she would then post them on to me. Which I did, and she did - and they arrived today and put a great big, and much-needed, smile on my face!!

There’s 4 little pots of melting wax in colours themed to specific clans or characters (there were loads more than 4 colour options to choose from but I managed to restrain myself and pick just 4!):

And there’s 6 seals (yes, I bought one of each!) each designed to correspond to the main clans in CQL/MDZS:

Look how beautifully packaged they all are! The boxes are really thick, good-quality cardboard!

The seals not only have beautiful coloured handles corresponding to the relevant clan:

But the design of the seals themselves also include elements specific to each clan: e.g. the Yunmeng Jiang seal has a lotus flower on it, the Gusu Lan seal has a cloud pattern and a crane!

And just look at the little pots of melting wax! They contain wax pellets in different colour combinations.. e.g. the Wei Wuxian-themed one is a mix of black, gold, red and grey. So when you melt them you get a lovely random mix of colours swirled together.

I can’t wait to have a play with these and I am so grateful to Stebee for a) enabling my The Untamed/CQL/MDZS addiction and helping me to buy these gorgeous items and b) expending her time and effort to help me order these, to package them up for me and to get to the post office etc and send these to me.
