#semester in review

I've been working with my students to build this hangout area in the library with like fun lighting, student book reviews, comfy seating (we're getting bean bags in a few weeks), and fidgets as a soft launch on the general vibe I'm thinking for the rest of the library. It's been going SO WELL, students love it so far, but they've been slowly trying to squeeze in more desks than can really fit so they can all sit there 😭 anyways some pics 😋

I'm really glad I waited to read The Fifth Season by NK Jemisin because it really is so worth the time and energy this book takes. it is so beautiful and carefully crafted and I am so excited to read the rest of the series. I was worried it wouldn't hit me the way it did everyone else but I am so glad I was wrong. It is also worth going in blind (except maybe some trigger warnings) but such a fully captivating and wise novel. if you haven't read it yet, I highly recommend picking it up!

another doll post… this is the one i’ve been talking about

today i managed to remember to bring my wallet to the walmart, so i decided to go ahead and grab one of the decora girls

my walmart only had these two, celestia and decora. i decided to pick up decora because she’s the poster girl. also, rainbows.

here’s her in her box, as well as the box art on the back. i wish i could’ve seen luna and sweetie in person. don’t know why every walmart ive seen have them only has decora and celestia.

unboxed! i have to say, u do like her much better out of her box. the hair feels like nylon, to me and not poly, which i was thinking it might be.

here’s what she comes with. one doll, three hairclips, two sticker sheets, a doll comb, and a stand. i was pleasantly surprised to see that she comes with a stand! she is not capable of standing up herself whatsoever, and even with the stand you have to balance her a little. i also was not able to get her hairclips to stay on her bangs, as they are very loose and her bangs do not have enough hair for them to sit nicely.

she has articulation at the shoulders, hips, and neck, as well as a turnable waist. her legs are rubbery and have click-joints, giving them a little bit of motion, but her elbows are unarticulated. her arms are rubbery as well though, so you can get a little movement out of them, but it won’t hold.

her clothes. she actually comes with a lot of pieces- a bodysuit, a jacket, a skirt, two mismatched socks, leg warmers, shoes, and a purse with a little charm on it. i do particularly like these colorful platforms and the leg warmers

here’s her face (i did decided to try out one of the band aid stickers just to see how it looked. her eyebrows are super far under her bangs.

now, one of the biggest complaints (that i agree with) is that the faces on these dolls are not really that great. they look very baby-doll ish, but not in a way that’s quite cute enough to fit the mold. not particular a fan of this open mouth smile, or the detail-less eyes.

i did buy this doll with the intention to repaint! this is my initial mock up, i’d love to know if people like or hate this idea, or if they have any ideas for directions to take her face. i wanted to go for a kind of rainbow-maximalist look, with lots of asymmetry, because i feel like that really sells more of the decora style than her inital look.

here she is next to some of my other more rainbow-ish dolls. i put her next to core lagoona 1 and sunny’s 2-pack look, so you can see how she’s proportioned compared to a monster high and a rainbow high. she’s about the same height, but obviously has a much larger, massive bobblehead.

and that’s decora! i like her much more unboxed than i thought… i’d love to play around more with the sticker gimmick, but i don’t want to waste them before i give her her repaint. i will definitely update you guys as i work on her, though!

overhearing the students i was helping in class today say "she's so sweet!" as they leave and then the professor coming up to ask me if i'm going into education because he thinks i'm really good at teaching

so i am a bit late to clancy album (bcuz of finals😭) buuut here i am and here are my thoughts while listening to all the clancy songs (and rating them 1-10)

1. Overcompensate: great opener, lyrics are a little random (but iconic lol), vocals are amazingg (love the piano :3), 8.8/10

2. Next Semester: have literally 0 complaints, fucking love this song, 10/10

3. Backslide: vocals are great, but the beat could've been more energetic imo, love the lyrics, 8.5/10

4. Midwest Indigo: don't feel like the drums match, but i like the rest of the beat, good vocals, kinda 50/50 on the lyrics (start kinda reminds me of Momentz lol), 7.9/10

5. Routines In The Night: very chill honestly, love the vocals & lyrics, (ooh little rat bit :3), beat is nice too, 9/10

6. Vignette: ooh very strong beat at the start, loving the lyrics (ooh little rap bit :3) beat is very nice too :D, 10/10

7. The Craving (Jenna's Version): vocals always a 10, very chill song, and i find it so cute that he's made a song abt Jenna in almost every album, like so sweet, but in a aesthetic factor it doesn't really fit Clancy, soo 8.5/10

8. Lavish: best is majestic asf, not 100% on the lyrics rn but lyrics are very nice ("got both hands on ur shoulder while ur bottomless" WHAT😭🙏), 9.2/10

9. Navigating: love the drums, love vocals, love the rest if the best too, lyrics are fucking amazing, 9.7/10

10. Snap Back: beat kinda reminds me of like those alarms, but in a good way? vocals great ofc, also kinda like the slight switch in beat (ooh loved that buildup too), lyrics are good, 8.9/10

11. Oldies Station: i feel like im being called out. love the vocals, pretty chill beat but i like it :) kinda got a nostalgic vibe to it? 8.6/10

12. At The Risk Of Feeling Dumb: kinda strange beat at the start, but im liking it, actually scratch that this is an amazing beat, vocals are beautiful, ok now where are the cameras, WHY IS THIS SONG LITERALLY ME???, 9.8/10

13. Paladin Strait: omg the finalee :3 vocals kinda remind me of a traditional greek song that id hear in my school's choir? not in a bad way tho, chill beat, omg it's 6 minutes long? holy crap, anyways, very nice lyrics :3 ok wait a sec, will there be a beat switch? omg yes there will!! loving the ukulele, and the softer vocals too :D omg JUMPSCARE what's that voice😭 omg i loved it, 9.5/10

btw these are all my opinions, i am not some kinda specialist i just love tøp and might be neurodivergent so, results may vary lol

There's actually quite a lot of talking that happens during the dances, so they can be sharing jokes and gossiping about what other people are wearing.

If you're wanting a more traditional ball structure, the amount of times people danced together could be very telling. Dancing with the same person multiple times was a sign of romantic interest, so the two friends are trying to balance hanging out with each other while dancing with not being viewed as anything more.

Or you could move into a fake dating plotline.

There might be games set up for those who don't want to dance, aren't socially expected to dance, or are simply unable to. The characters could spend the time playing games.

Interestingly, refusing a dance with someone was essentially saying you weren't going to dance at all, so A swoops in and claims that B has already accepted their offer to dance earlier and is thus unable to dance with C. Additionally, you can throw in snobbery, finery, and passive aggressiveness where needed. Balls were important social events as much as they were for fun, so outright snubbing someone could make for an interesting turn of events, or the characters could test the limits of how far they could go with veiled comments before they get caught.

Gotham Academy Second Semester

Do you want to read another semester of adventures at Gotham Academy? Read this.

I will say I preferred the first series more. This one was less monster of the week and longer more serious style story, which is fine, I just personally prefer monster of the week (and think it's more fun with these characters).

But other than that this basically is what it's title suggests - more Gotham Academy. The characters are still fun and interesting, the connections to greater Batman and Gotham characters is still really well handled. It is very good and I had a lot of fun reading it and I definitively want more of this series and these characters.

Should you read it? If you enjoyed the first Gotham Academy series than yes, this is definitively worth a read as well.
