gotta be honest with you, i'm not too sure about this thing ppl say of "conservatives" being irrationally opposed to "trans people just existing" or whatever. i guess controversial take but no they actually have very concrete reasons to oppose bodily autonomy and the destabilization of sexual roles we represent considering their views on sex/gender and social reproduction overall actually. obviously we must oppose those views as they are 1. wrong and 2. oppressive but like. it's not like they just chose a random minority to hate. i mean otherwise why do you think it's specifically us.

lowkey i still havent forgiven tumblr for that one week when chappell was starting to blow up and a bunch of people decided to hate on her out of pure retaliation to the zeitgeist. 'haha she makes fake gay music my loser ex wouldve listened to!!' okay. do you want a sticker
#like pre-ANY controversy it was so. like some of you really jump at the chance to hate women#its so easy to just say 'her sound/aesthetic isnt for me' and move on

I think hearing about ballet symbolism meaning would be very cool if you ever want to do that... I feel like there's a whole other layer to princess tutu that I'm missing just through not understanding the intricacies of the dances and costuming details
i'd love to!! it would def take a longer post than i can write rn, but one of my favorite small examples is the contrast between rue and ahiru in class
we're told that rue's in the advanced (pointe) class, and it shows in her character design. i feel like this is visually communicated in their contrast even if you don't know what to look for, but for me what jumps out here is
1. leotard colors. younger classes tend to wear pastels, and those colors darken until you reach black. ahiru's baby blue signifies that she's at least a class behind rue, and considering that the rest of the advanced class wears navy blue, rue might be even further ahead. (or she may be granted the freedom to wear whatever color she wants, which seniors/pre-professionals sometimes are allowed)
2. neckline and sleeves. not a lot to say, just that ahiru's design is again typical for younger students while rue's is more mature
3. the hip accessory. ahiru's wearing a hip alignment belt - i never used one, but it's meant to make it easier for you to check if your hips are correctly aligned in the mirror. rue's skirt works in a similar way, but is also typically reserved for older students who don't need to have a clear visual reminder anymore. also skirts allow for more personal expression, which again is typically reserved for seniors
overall ballet uniforms emphasize visual clarity so that students and teachers can easily recognize and correct bad technique, and conformity because... well, ballet is strict like that, but also conformity is typically required by the corps de ballet (the performers who don't have main roles, think the rest of the white swans in swan lake, village dancers in coppelia, snowflakes in the nutcracker, etc.) ahiru's outfit communicates that she's no one special, just another kid in the class, while rue's outfit makes her literally stand out from the rest of the class as a result of her seniority and skill.

not that ive read or watched much of any ballet related fiction outside of one single anime but i think character design that works with the limited expression allowed in ballet uniforms is underrated

just found out the alice in wonderland tart adage (featuring the queen of hearts) parodies the rose adage and its so fun. really wish that full modern ballets were more accessible (which is the reason why i never discuss them, i just haven't seen them) but i'm glad this one at least is up on youtube
the sleeping beauty soundtrack is so good i wish the ballet was real

I know we’re all tapped out. Please just share this, and read it
My best friend of many years has fallen on some really serious hard times. Financially they’re in ruin, and emotionally they’ve been in ruin for much longer. This is someone I love deeply, and not being able to do enough for them is destroying me.
Grey is my love. A really truly kind person, a black Nigerian mentally ill child of abuse and immigrants. Someone who would give of themself again and again and again. They got scammed by someone claiming to be there to save them. Now they owe THOUSANDS to a bank who wants to sue them. Who WILL sue them. They desperately need money for an attorney, to help pay any of it back, and of course on top of that their unemployment card was stolen so they owe THEM too!
Please, just share the link. I beg you. Anywhere and everywhere.

Yu'yo - Our Mouth
Mouth... eating... also used for making sounds, I think one of the coolest features of mixtec and other related languages is the glottal stop! whenever you see an apostrophe in a mixtec word you are supposed to abruptly stop the pronoucnciation of the word, through closing the glottis muscle in your throat, then produce the sound after the apostrophe right after Mouths are cool, a way to express ourselves, to eat consume, exhale and bite.

episode 2
interesting. so utena does try to escape the system merely by stating that she won't play along, and saionji responds that people who don't follow the rules 'disappear', so she changes her mind. i'd forgotten that she did try to say no because it happens so subtly compared to typical 'refusal of the call' scenarios, but if she rejects the duel system at this point she loses the ability to find her prince.
like its not that easy to walk away because the system positions itself as The World. there is nothing outside of The World, and you can only find meaning, happiness, and everything that you think that you want by doing exactly what The World tells you to do.
WAIT...... because that's literally how the series ends. utena disappears from the campus. fuck
the ones who walk away from ohtori or whatever
shoutout to the shadow girl potted cactus wooo
god these kids have no idea whats going on. like they all understand perfectly but they have no idea
is chuchu like... idk how to explain. an externalization of the parts of anthy's personality that she's denied. like chuchu is silly, warms up to utena quickly, stands up to saionji, but also resembles her brother a bit - maybe a representation of her lingering fondness for a version of her brother that doesn't exist anymore, in the most harmless form she can imagine

i really like how the introduction shots of ohtori academy dont include any people in them. makes the school feel like an entity of its own
obviously this makes sense in terms of writing efficiency but the fact that utena sees anthy IMMEDIATELY after her declaration that she wants to be a 'prince who saves princesses', despite it seeming like she doesn't really know what that means (especially because we saw in the first scene that she left without wakaba in the morning)... anthy were you reaching out to her here. were you testing her. was it a cry for help. god
wakaba ily but since you don't know about the rose bride stuff, refusing to see anthy as a legitimate romantic interest for saionji while also refusing to believe that saionji's misogynistic violence towards her could ever be turned on you is. well
'a REAL man wouldnt--' oh utena......
the 'the castle is a mirage' throwaway line still pisses me off so bad LOL like it really was. but it wasnt. but it is!!!!
the moment where anthy stares at utena right before the duel fucking kills me
something something sword pull something something visual/physical representation of ultimate heterosexual/patriarchal roles. including the myth of women secretly holding more power than men when in reality theyre being exploited by the men they're forced to be dependent on, something which fucking haunts anthy discourse because of course it does
