this took a while because i wanted to make paint doodles giggle.

ANYWAYS. under a readmore bc images make it long

it starts off with selrine having arane and because she is mentally unwell at this point and does not need to be a mother, she kind of just fucks off leaving arane with her mom. she goes to pandaria, a place where she's basically the only night elf which does wonders for her. arane is raised in val'sharah, becoming a tailor like his mother and grandmother. the stilldews were a sort-of famous tailoring family, especially as non-highbornes.

then the legion invades for the first time. arane loses his grandmother and partner to the legion, losing his one connection to selrine. he becomes a demon hunter and old man yaoi starts. selrine is farming and living a quiet life in pandaria still. she joins a pandaren temple and does healing work in the villages around where she lives in the valley of the four winds

during the second legion invasion, at the beginning, selrine's temple is attacked by the legion and she ends up joining the class hall for that.

arane is jailed for this part, and eventually gets out because they need the demon hunters.

both of them end up in val'sharah. selrine goes because she's supporting aquanthis, who she took care of for a while in pandaria and sees him like a son. she doesn't have a concept of her actual son being an adult, so she does not recognize arane as such when they meet in val'sharah. arane notices and recognizes selrine immediately, but does not say anything because there's complicated issues there, obviously.

arane feels somewhat robbed of having a relationship with his mother when they meet in val'sharah, and is a bit icy towards aquanthis for a minute because of this. he gets over it and gives selrine her distance, as his grandmother told him what she went through before he was born and he can't be mad at her for it for too long

and then we get a fairly large time skip

arane and illidan end up having a child, syllene, and that's when arane decides to reach out to selrine and let her know that he's her son. selrine goes through a lot of emotions because he does so by telling her that his child is her granddaughter, and she also feels a lot of guilt all at once because she realizes how much she's missed of her son's life

going on from that, they have a fairly awkward relationship because obviously it'll be hard for people that old (15k for arane, god knows for selrine) to connect and have that mother-son relationship. they work through any awkwardness because syllene loves her dad and loves her grandma just as much. selrine spoils her granddaughter

they're both very similar people, and before he became a demon hunter he had been following in her steps (before she left of course) and had trained as a healing druid. they're both very caring towards others, and before arane told selrine he was her son, many people would draw comparisons between the two if they had interacted with them for any extended period of time.

in short: selrine is not getting any mother of the year awards but she's working on it. arane gets son of the year every year because he's so sweeties and understanding

On origins and measures of time

One of my favorite things to mention about Selrin is that the idea of her character started to take shape based on one random fact. While we were sitting on a park bench on a cloudy April day, my partner told me that one of the ways that plants measure and sense time is through the length of the night.

I don't know what it was that stuck with me about this, but I couldn't get it out of my head for the rest of our walk. Eventually, I pulled up my notes app and wrote it down. The thought evolved as the day went on, and I imagined what kind of person would perceive time in the same way. I added a new line to the note:

Her days were measured by the length of the night.

My BG3 obsession was in full swing at this point as I had been playing the game non-stop for nearly six months at that point. Naturally, my thoughts drifted to how I could create a character based on this small fact.

I had also been lurking in the fandom on twitter for some time, and I was inspired by the depth of the characters that people created and the care with which they told their stories. I had never put much effort into crafting a backstory for my original characters in games, but I wanted to give it a try.

My yet-unnamed nocturnal character went through a few different iterations. She was almost a rogue, she was almost a Durge, her name was almost Aniel. As I parsed out the details, another idea emerged: I wanted the character to be a reluctant hero and someone that HATES the idea of being called a hero but somehow ends up doing heroic things. I wanted someone that felt strongly about a few specific beliefs and subjects, but was otherwise quite neutral-leaning.

I don't quite remember when or how Kelemvor came into the picture or even how the idea of her being a cleric came to be, but I loved the idea of a kind of night-stalking undead hunter whose main job is going into the kind of eerie, unsettling places that most travelers (and perhaps even adventurers) would actively seek to avoid.

Selrin works under the cover of night because she can use the darkness to her advantage as a hunter and because it is when she is most alert. I will talk more about her relationship to the night and darkness in a separate post, but in short, Selrin’s days are measured by the length of the night in part because she fears it. In this sense, she has a complicated relationship to her own measures of time.

Just as plants have other means of sensing time, I like to think that Selrin's measures of time grow and evolve over the course of the events in-game. Days and weeks measured being measured by the length of battles, the number of days passed with a tadpole in the brain, the duration of evenings spent by the fire, and the hours (or perhaps minutes) since the last kiss.

Intro

Hi! As this space is super new, I thought I would make a quick intro post to pin and get things rolling. I'm still figuring out what I want this space to be and this post will probably evolve as I figure it out, but I'll start off with some basics!

As I mentioned in this post, the purpose of this blog is to be a kind of ongoing archive of my ramblings related to my bg3 oc, Selrin, and perhaps other more general bg3 ramblings and content. This is my first time using tumblr in 8 years and I am still finding my footing, so things might be pretty bare bones for now!

Ever since I started posting about my most recent (and now favorite) bg3 oc, Selrin, on twitter, a thought that stayed at the back of my mind was that I wouldn’t have any single place where I could look back on everything that I’ve shared about her. Or perhaps a place where people who might be interested in her as a character or her story could see the collection of bits and baubles about her that I’ve ended up posting while trying to avoid actually working.

When I first created Selrin, I didn’t know how much she would come to mean to me as a character. This my first experience being really invested in an original character, and it still sometimes takes me by surprise how much I think about her on a daily basis. There is much to say and much to share and I think more than anything I just want a place to speak into the void where I feel a little bit less self-conscious and “perceived.” Of course, that isn't to say that I won’t be perceived here, but my idea of this space feels more like an archive than anything else.

I’m still not quite sure exactly how I want to use this space or what it will look like, but I think I’ll just start by going back in time a bit and filling in parts of Selrin’s story and maybe some of my other bg3 reflections as I go along. I also haven’t used tumblr in 8 years so I will need to take some time to reacquaint myself with how things work here (this is my way of saying please bear with me!!)!

I don’t know if/when someone else will see this space aside from me and a few mutuals, but if you do and if you want to say hi, don’t hesitate!

Another sneak-peek of the Selrin Grass Starter!

This is a little slice of the final evolution. Can anyone guess what it’s based off of?

I’m still working on the concept of the Fire Starter - I have the idea in mind but the execution of it is still up in the air.

The Water Starter is all done apart from the names, which have yet to be finalised.

Hopefully I’ll be able to start posting the full Selrin Fakemon shortly. ;)
